How to sheathe a frame house outside osb. Wall decoration with OSB slabs and roofing works

It is advisable that the installation of OSB on the walls is carried out by specialists. OSB (oriented strand board) is a material that has gained popularity in the field of construction and home decoration. It has a large number of advantages that allow it to be used in exterior decoration dwellings, in the cladding of internal walls and the construction of partitions in the process of redevelopment. In view of the increasing demand for this material, it is worth considering what are advantages of OSB plates and where they are used, as well as what finishing methods exist for this material.

Advantages and disadvantages of OSB boards

According to builders, wall decoration with OSB plates has a number of advantages:

  1. Compared to other materials that are sold in sheets, OSB walls are relatively inexpensive.
  2. The manufacturing method assumes resistance to damage, which ensures a minimum of defects during production, transportation and after installation.
  3. They are lightweight, so the installation of the slabs on the walls does not carry a large load on bearing structures... Also, due to their lightness, these plates are easy to carry from place to place and install by hand.
  4. These slabs look attractive on their own. There are several options for additional decorative finishing.
  5. This material is resistant to moisture, decay, fungal infection and is of little interest to insects.
  6. The strength of the slab structure does not interfere with drilling or other processing.

All these properties make the material suitable for external and internal works... However, when choosing, you should pay attention to the reputation of the manufacturer. Some firms, for the sake of economy, do not comply with technologies, so their products are of poor quality from an environmental point of view. Such plates can emit harmful substances. Any OSB products do not allow moisture and steam to pass through, therefore, in rooms with such a finish, you should take care of decent ventilation.

Areas of use

There are two main ways of working with OSB plates. First, it is a rough sheathing of the main wall, inside or outside. This option allows you to reduce the number of joints, level the wall and make it more durable. To achieve these results, it is worth considering a number of points:

  1. The material is fastened every 30 cm in the intermediate sections and twice as often at the joints.
  2. The outer edges are attached to the wall every 10 cm at a distance of at least 10 cm from the end of the sheet.
  3. For ventilation, gaps are left between them, which are then filled with sealant. This is one of the main ways to provide ventilation for exterior walls.
  4. When decorating a wall from OSB boards, you should take care of protection from wind and excessive moisture. Taking into account the peculiarities of the material for working outside, it is worth using a superdiffusion membrane; foil-clad polyethylene is useful for finishing inside.

Other nuances in the question of how to sheathe a wall with OSB plates are discussed in the following video:

Secondly, to change the layout of the rooms, you can use the OSB. For this, installation on wooden or metal profiles is used. Drywall is fixed in a similar way. The difference between OSB partitions is the resistance of this material to deformation, therefore, such interior elements do not bend under their own weight and are more reliably protected from cracks and other damage.

Since wood chip fragments are included in the basis of the material, in the manufacture of OSB boards they are covered with a special composition. It includes resins, wax or paraffin. It not only has a bonding effect, but also gives the surface evenness and smoothness, therefore, additional decoration of the OSB walls is associated with additional difficulties. Firstly, the outer layer does not have adhesion properties. Secondly, some components contain fat and other substances that can seep through external Finishing work and spoil the final look, so you should consider options for decorative processing of the material before finishing the walls from OSB inside the house.

Finishing with paint or varnish

Painting or varnishing the walls is one of the budgetary ways decoration of the walls of the rooms. But in order for the layers to lay down evenly, and in the future there were no unpleasant surprises, it is worth considering a number of points.

First, you need to inspect all the attachment points of the plates for not fully hammered nails or twisted screws. Such minor flaws can lead to the manifestation rust stains through the paint. In the case of nails, it is worth using a doboiner, since when working with a hammer, not only will there not be a sufficient result, but the wall cladding will also suffer.

If it is planned that the inner walls will be painted, it is worth using an acrylic sealant to process the joints, since the paint does not apply well enough to the silicone look.

The obligatory stage of work is the surface. It will provide the material with great adhesion properties. In addition, the layer will lay on the prepared surface more evenly and give an appropriate effect. After the first coat of primer, pay attention to the condition of the pile. After such processing, it can rise, and the wall will lose its evenness.

To correct this deficiency, sand the surface and apply another coat of primer. After that, you can finish the walls of the room with varnish or paint. Depending on the humidity of the room, you can use the option on alkyd or acrylic. In some cases, it will also work. water-based paint... Some builders recommend acrylic varnish for walls.

For reliability and aesthetic beauty, it is recommended to apply the coating in 2-3 layers.

Preparation of OSB walls for wallpapering

Wallpaper is considered the most popular option for wall decoration, so they are used in rooms with walls trimmed with OSB slabs. Sometimes such a need arises in the process of redeveloping a space. So, before making a partition, you should make sure that it is in harmony with the rest of the interior.

Can be used if there is a need for the finished wall to become versatile for any kind of application decorative coating... With this version of wall processing, it is worth paying attention to some features:

  1. The putty is applied to a clean surface. The presence of dust, dirt or traces of other building materials on the wall can adversely affect the quality of the coating, therefore, it is worthwhile to thoroughly wash the wall before applying the putty composition.
  2. It is worth paying attention that the heads of the nails and screws are recessed as deep as possible, and it is better to remove the top layer with sandpaper. The surface for the putty should be slightly rough.
  3. It is better to process the joints between the slabs with a nitro-filler. This will ensure evenness and strength. Alternatively, a body putty can be used as its properties are designed for a moving object. In this regard, the composition has not only lightness, but also great connecting properties, and on the wall it does not collapse for a long time. After finishing preparatory work a layer of putty is applied.
  4. After applying the composition, you can start priming the surface.

This option is convenient in that now, on top of the primer layer, you can use any decorative material without regard to the features of OSB boards.

OSB slabs are a versatile material for cladding the walls of a house or decorating rooms inside it. This raw material is used both for strengthening walls and creating partitions. It is strong enough, lightweight and resistant to mechanical stress, moisture, fungus and insects.

In order for this coating to last as long as possible, it is worth considering several factors before fixing the OSB. This is especially true of the distance between nails and screws, as well as the location of the joints. The appearance allows the use of OSB boards without any decorative processing. However, they can be putty, painted, varnished or prepared under wallpaper. Subject to technology, the result will be smooth walls, which will be the basis for any interior and will delight its owner for many years.

Exterior wall cladding is one of the final stages of construction frame house... And here the choice of material is of great importance: the microclimate in the premises, the mechanical strength of the walls, the reliability of protection from moisture and cold depend on it. In addition, the cladding serves as the basis for finishing materials, and in some cases acts as topcoat and is responsible for the aesthetic appearance of the building.

Sheathing gives the structure of the structure a certain rigidity and takes on part of the load. This means that one of the main criteria is the mechanical strength of the material in bending and compression, the absence of shrinkage during operation. Walls should retain their original shape for years, regardless of the surrounding conditions. In addition, the cladding must be resistant to moisture, sudden changes in temperature, and the effects of microorganisms.

Next, you need to pay attention to the ease of installation of the material and its pliability during processing. If you plan to sheathe yourself with your own hands, this aspect is of great importance, because it depends on it how much time and effort it will take to work. The material should be easy to cut and drill, but at the same time maintain the density on the sections, not crumble, not crack. And, of course, it must be durable so that you do not have to change the skin every 10-15 years.

Material selection

There are several types of materials that meet the specified requirements to a greater or lesser extent: moisture-resistant plywood, DSP, OSB, edged board, fiberboard. They have similar characteristics and are widely used in frame construction... To make your choice, you should familiarize yourself in more detail with the main properties and features of each of them.

Oriented strand board (OSB)

OSB panels rightfully belong to the most demanded materials for the arrangement of frame structures. They consist of layers of glued wood shavings and chips, and in the outer layers the fibers are located longitudinally, inside - transversely. For bonding the chips, synthetic resins and wax are used, which impart water-repellent properties to the finished boards.

Standard production includes the production of these boards in several categories:

  • OSB-1 is intended exclusively for interior decoration of dry rooms with reduced mechanical stress;
  • OSB-2 is used for the installation of load-bearing structures in rooms with low humidity;
  • OSB-3 is a moisture-resistant board of increased rigidity used for the installation of load-bearing structures inside and outside the premises.

In terms of the quality-functionality-price ratio, OSB-3 is the most optimal, and this material is widely used in private construction for wall cladding, the manufacture of load-bearing partitions, and reusable formwork when pouring concrete structures. Plates lend themselves well to grinding, cutting, drilling, hold nails tightly even at a distance of 6 mm from the edge. Such cladding can simultaneously serve as a decorative coating for walls, it is enough just to treat it with a waterproof varnish or paint it.

Benefits of OSB:

  • dense structure prevents delamination and splitting of the material during processing and during operation;
  • slabs have elasticity and high strength, perfectly resist vibrations, compressive loads, and various deformations;
  • the material is resistant to weathering and temperature extremes;
  • OSB is resistant to microorganisms, insects and rodents do not like it.

Disadvantages:

  • very low vapor permeability;
  • flammability;
  • the content of toxic compounds (phenol and formaldehyde).

Cement particle board (DSP)

This material is a compressed mass of M500 cement and shavings (usually softwood). The standard board has three layers: the outer one is made of fine chips, the inner one is made of coarse. In addition to the main components, the composition contains hydration additives, mass fraction which does not exceed 3%. DSP is characterized by resistance to moisture, high strength, long service life. Plates are widely used in private construction, industrial, for work indoors and outdoors.

When covering the frame, such plates serve as an excellent basis for cladding, decorative plaster, painting, since they form a perfectly flat and smooth surface. The material undergoes 50 cycles of complete freezing and thawing without losing its characteristics; later, the strength of the slabs decreases by about 10%. Among wood-board materials, CBPB is the leader in terms of environmental and technical indicators.

Advantages:

  • very low hygroscopicity;
  • resistance to mold and other microorganisms;
  • DSPs are not damaged by insects and rodents;
  • the material does not emit toxic substances;
  • low thermal conductivity;
  • Fire safety.

Disadvantages:

  • mechanical processing of plates requires significant efforts;
  • DSP is heavy compared to other materials;
  • when cutting and drilling plates, a lot of fine dust is formed, so you need to work in a respirator;
  • high price.

Fiberboard (Fibreboard)

The material consists of sheets of compressed shavings, usually coniferous. During the pressing process, the raw materials are highly heated, which allows you to achieve maximum density without using adhesives... Due to this, fiberboard belongs to environmentally friendly materials, and therefore is suitable for outdoor use and for decoration of residential premises. The shavings contain natural resin, which acts as an antiseptic and protects the boards from mold.

In terms of strength, fiberboard is noticeably inferior to natural lining and OSB, but it surpasses them in terms of heat and sound insulation properties.

Windproof plate "Beltermo"

Now on construction market Fiberboard is represented by insulating boards of several famous brands, the most popular of which are Beltermo and Izoplat. For cladding a frame house, plates with a thickness of at least 25 mm are used, thinner sheets are used indoors.

Advantages:

  • light weight;
  • low thermal conductivity;
  • ease of installation;
  • the material does not exfoliate or crumble;
  • high vapor permeability;
  • resistance to moisture and microorganisms;
  • lack of harmful substances in the composition.

Disadvantages:

  • high price;
  • prolonged stay without decorative trim causes slight deformation of the sheets;
  • fiberboard outer sheathing requires spacer braces in the frame or rigid inner sheathing.

Gypsum fiber sheets (GVL)

GVL consists of pressed gypsum reinforced with cellulose fibers. Due to its high strength, the material is suitable for creating load-bearing surfaces, therefore it is widely used in frame construction. It differs from drywall in greater density, uniformity, and the absence of a cardboard shell. In terms of frost resistance, sound insulation properties, as well as resistance to moisture and combustion, GVL also exceeds gypsum plasterboard by several times.

Installation of GVL is carried out in a frame and frameless way. For external wall cladding, the first option is used, where the sheets are fastened to the bearing racks with self-tapping screws. The material is easy to cut and drill, and, despite its heavy weight, it is quite convenient to install. Such cladding serves as an excellent basis for tiling and decorative plastering.

Advantages:

  • low hygroscopicity;
  • vapor permeability;
  • absence of toxic compounds in the composition;
  • fire safety;
  • high heat and sound insulating properties.

Disadvantages:

  • lack of plasticity and brittleness when bending the sheet;
  • great weight.

Plywood

Plywood is made by gluing thin veneer sheets of various types of wood (most often coniferous and birch). Sheets are stacked perpendicular to each other with respect to the location of the fibers, which contributes to an increase in mechanical strength material and increases resistance to deformation. For exterior cladding frame walls plywood of increased moisture resistance is used, which is marked with FSF. The thickness of the sheets should be from 9-10 mm, thinner material will not provide the required rigidity to the frame.

The grade of plywood is of little importance for sheathing, and the cheapest unpolished 4/4 grade can be used.

WITH outside all defects will be hidden under the hinged facade, so there is no point in overpaying. Subject to the sheathing technology, the plywood coating will serve for years without losing its qualities.

Advantages:

  • high bending and compressive strength;
  • moisture resistance;
  • wear resistance;
  • ease of processing and installation;
  • frost resistance.

Disadvantages:

  • flammability;
  • the content of formaldehyde resins;
  • tendency to chipping.

Edged board

The use of edged board for cladding is the most economical option. Wood is an environmentally friendly material, affordable, easy to install. Boards can be stuffed not only horizontally, but also at an angle of 45-60 degrees. To save material, the boards can be fastened in increments of up to 30 cm, although more often the sheathing is made solid. This design perfectly strengthens the frame and is a ready-made base for a ventilated facade.

In order for the sheathing to be reliable, boards are chosen with a thickness of at least 25 mm, they can be grooved, for a greater joint density. Do not use raw lumber: during the drying process, the wood will begin to warp, deformations of the finish coating may appear.

Advantages:

  • wood does not emit harmful substances and has excellent vapor permeability;
  • boards are easy to process;
  • work does not require large financial costs.

Disadvantages:

  • flammability of the material;
  • wood is susceptible to damage by insects and microorganisms;
  • fitting and fastening elements is time consuming.

Cladding technology

Installation of slabs on a finished frame is carried out using the same technology, regardless of the type of material. Simultaneously with the cladding, vapor barrier and wall insulation are performed, and the finishing can be done immediately after the completion of construction or after some time. Consider the installation technology using the example of frame cladding with OSB plates.

Sheathing can be done in two ways - with and without a crate. In the first case, the vapor barrier layer is located between the frame and OSB, in the second - on top of the skin. The option with a crate is used in cases where OSB acts as the basis for plastering, painting or tiling, the second method is used, as a rule, when installing a ventilated facade. Otherwise, there are no significant differences.

Step 1... Sheathing begins from the very corner. The first OSB sheet is applied to the frame posts so that the bottom edge completely overlaps bottom rail at home. Be sure to control the horizontal level. The slab itself is also recommended to be placed horizontally and not vertically - this provides the structure with greater rigidity. For fastening the material, use galvanized self-tapping screws with a length of at least 50 mm. It is necessary to retreat from the edge of the OSB about 10 mm, the fastening step along the perimeter of the sheet is 15 cm, in the center - 30 cm.

Advice. For a strong fixation of the boards, the length of the hardware must exceed the thickness of the OSB by at least 2.5 times. If the self-tapping screw enters the frame beam by less than 30 mm, under the influence of loads, the sheathing will begin to tear off from the supporting base.

Step 2. The next plate is placed next to the first, leaving a gap of 2-3 mm for thermal expansion. In the same way, they set the horizontal in level, screw the trim to the frame guides. The joints of the slabs must necessarily fall in the middle of the rack, only in this case the fastening will be as reliable as possible. The remaining plates are fixed in a circle, leaving open areas for doorways.

Step 3. The second row of cladding must be mounted with the bandaging of the vertical seams. The same gap of 2-3 mm is observed between the lower and upper plates. When covering openings, use whole sheets, not cuttings - the fewer joints, the more airtight the covering. Cutouts in the sheets are made with a jigsaw or circular saw, having made preliminary markings with millimeter precision. After installing the slab, the edges of the cuts should ideally coincide with the lines of the openings.

Step 4. The top plates are installed so as to completely cover the top rail. If the house has two floors, the interfloor piping should be closed by the middle of the slab - it is impossible to dock OSB on this line in any case.

The facade is a visiting card of any country house... Despite the huge selection of modern and proven facade finishing options, users of our portal are not afraid to experiment.

Interesting experience of a FORUMHOUSE member with a nickname Victor Banev, who decided to ennoble old cottage by making a facade of OSB (or OSB, oriented strand board) with further imitation of a half-timbered layout on them.

Durability of OSB

Usually, everyone who decided to do something like this is primarily concerned with the question - what will happen to the facade in 3-5 years if it is sheathed with OSB.

Someone thinks that the plates will swell, tk. OSB is not finishing material, intended for use on the "street". Someone thinks that such a cladding option is possible and moreover, it is optimal in terms of reducing financial costs and the possibility of self-repetition.

Victor Banev FORUMHOUSE user

Whether or not to use OSB on the facade - opinions differ. I decided that the game was worth the candle in terms of speed, ease of installation and low cost of such a facade. Just note that the facade is made ofOSB is an economical option for thrifty summer residents. To decorate a capital structure - a cottage, more weather-resistant materials should be used.

Looking ahead, let's say that the lifespan of a facade made of OSB boards has already passed the third year, and how it looks is clearly demonstrated by the following photo.

Wall Pie with OSB

The result is impressive, and now let's get down to practice. There is an old uninsulated summer cottage measuring 6x8 meters. External cladding- inch board. On top of the boards - painted hardboard. The place of alteration is the Leningrad region, i.e. an area with higher humidity than Moscow, with frequent rains, fogs and short summers.

It is required to insulate the building from the outside and make beautiful facade... The budget is minimal. This means: work without hired workers, using relatively inexpensive materials and technology, feasible for two people. Also interesting is the user's train of thought when choosing methods of facade decoration.

Victor Banev

I don't like siding on the facade. It's boring. The block house is too expensive. The well-proven DSP option ( cement particle board) for further painting and imitation of half-timbered timber also disappears. It is expensive and, due to the large weight, it is difficult to lift the sheets, and even more so, to mount them at a height. Sheathe clapboard - also not that. But I, as they say, fell for a half-timbered house and began to think how to bring this idea to life.

After going through several options, the user decided to make the facade he liked so much for a half-timbered house based on OSB plates. This, according to the user, is much cheaper and easier than messing with the DSP.

OSB based wall cake

As a result, the user came to such a "pie" of the wall. From the inside to the outside:

  • drywall;
  • wall;
  • insulation - mineral wool, laid in 2 layers, with a total thickness of 100 mm;
  • wind and moisture protection membrane;
  • counter lattice;
  • OSB 3 slabs with imitation of half-timbered layout.

Since total savings are at the forefront, the first thing that a user of our site did Victor Banev, virtually laid slabs on the walls to minimize sawing and waste.

Moreover, sheet dimensionsOSB dictate the location of the decorative layout from boards (25x100 mm), which cover the joints of the slabs and imitate half-timbered timber.

After several intermediate layouts, we managed to come to a common denominator. A sheet with dimensions of 224x122 cm, placed vertically, almost completely covers the wall, and overlays (boards) are needed only to protect the vertical joints of the slabs. We will tell you how to estimate the layout (after removing all required dimensions from the facade) using the example of the left wall of the house.

If you look at the figure above, you will notice that 2 whole sheets of OSB are placed vertically on the left and right. According to the results of measurements of the wall, it turned out that the distance (the remaining gap) in the middle is wider than one sheet, but already two. Those. - we need to sheathe the wall with two pieces laid horizontally, and then close the resulting horizontal seam. To maintain symmetry and overall design layouts, add horizontal strips to the outermost OSB sheets and act in a similar way around the entire perimeter of the building.

The layout of the slabs and boards that cover the joints depends on the size of the house, and each case should be considered and calculated individually.

Installation of slabs

Having dealt with the layout design, we proceed to the installation of the plates. The work is simple, but there are a number of nuances. First of all, do not forget that curtain facade requires good ventilation for the release of excess moisture. If we neglect the main ventilation ducts (gap) with an exit in the upper part of the facade, then the moisture will be trapped inside, behind the OSB slabs, which do not allow steam to pass through, and with a large thickness they are practically vapor-tight. Hence - a bunch of problems in the form of mold and waterlogged insulation.

The user has a gap at the top of the facade, about 1.5 cm across the entire width of the panel.

We proceed directly to the installation of OSB. The thickness of the slabs in this version is 9 mm. This is quite enough, since sheets practically do not bear power load. First, on the walls, outside, we stuff the frame - a crate made of vertically placed wooden bars with a section of 50x50 mm.

We put between them, a bullet, mineral wool insulation.

Next, we fill horizontal crate and, accordingly, we lay the insulation (the so-called cross insulation), orienting it horizontally. Thus, the joints of the slabs overlap. Then attach vapor-permeable moisture-proof membrane, with the obligatory overlap and gluing the joints with adhesive tape (double-sided).

Then we stuff vertical bars 30x40 mm, for fixing OSB sheets.

Victor Banev

The pitch of the bars is 0.4 m, i.e. it turns out: 3 vertical strips per sheet. OSB was fixed with self-tapping screws, 6 pcs. for 1 bar. A gap of 2-3 mm was left between the sheets. Then the gap was carefully painted over, although, I think that this is not necessary, since from direct contact with rain or dew, the ends of the slabs will be protected by wooden plates 100 mm wide.

In addition to insulation, the windows were replaced at the house, for which they were carried forward on frames made of a 5x15 cm board.

At the end of the cladding, they began painting the mounted walls.

Before painting, one additional layer of universal bioprotective moisture-resistant impregnation, on a varnish base, was applied to the surface of the plates. Application was carried out from 2 sides.

Further, the plates, before mounting on the walls (it is more convenient and faster to work this way), were covered with two layers of acrylic facade paint... At the coverage stage, the user made one mistake, which will be discussed below, but for now we suggest looking at what happened at this stage. According to the user, the result exceeded all expectations.

If you move away from the facade by 1.5-2 meters, then you get the impression that the walls are finished with plaster, and you can understand from the street that this is a facade made of OSB boards, impossible.

In addition to the decor, instead of the old porch, a summer veranda was erected in the shape of the letter L from a 15x15 cm bar.

After that, we moved on to finishing - the installation of a half-timbered layout. The planed board has different lengths. Somewhere - 2, somewhere - 3 meters.

Diagonal jibs, 2.5 m each, are made from one solid board.

Boards are attracted along the edges with self-tapping screws. The result is a strong, sealed connection that does not get moisture.

For contrast, the boards were painted dark brown.

Three-year operation of the facade has confirmed the correctness of the technology. OSB boards at the ends did not swell, the paint did not peel off, the quality of the facade is invariably high. The only moment mentioned above: due to an error made at the installation stage (several boards were "forgotten" to be treated with biosecurity), the OSB outside was covered with fungus, which in places came out from under the paint.

Plates treated with protection were not touched by mold. This error turned out to be easily fixable. The cladding was removed and painted over again (for safety - with an antiseptic additive). A year later, the fungus did not appear. What happened in the end Victor Banev, show the following photos.

Andrey Pavlovets Participant of FORUMHOUSE

The facade has been in use for 10 years. I walked over the CBPB slabs with a water emulsion 2 times, and that's it, since then I have not tinted anything for all this time. The paint holds just fine. I did everything myself. Sawed DSP 1200x3600x10 mm into squares with a side of 1200 mm. Otherwise, do not raise. The hardest part is making the top corner outside pieces. To sheathe, I had to climb the stairs, if I made a mistake with the saw, go down and saw again. He drilled holes for self-tapping screws in advance, then baited them with fasteners and, using a block system, lifted them up. Difficult, but worth it.

The room sheathed with OSB plates

It is advisable that the installation of OSB on the walls is carried out by specialists. OSB (oriented strand board) is a material that has gained popularity in the field of construction and home decoration. It is distinguished by a large number of advantages that allow it to be used in the exterior decoration of the home, in the cladding of internal walls and the design of partitions in the redevelopment process. In view of the increasing demand for this material, it is worth considering what are the advantages of OSB boards and where they are used, as well as what finishing methods exist for this material.

  3. They are lightweight, so the installation of the slabs on the walls does not carry a large load on the supporting structures. Also, due to their lightness, these plates are easy to carry from place to place and install by hand.
  4. These slabs look attractive on their own. There are several options for additional decorative finishes.
  5. This material is resistant to moisture, decay, fungal infection and is of little interest to insects.
  6. The strength of the slab structure does not interfere with drilling or other processing.

All these properties make the material suitable for external and internal work.

Secondly, in order to change the layout of rooms, you can mount partitions from OSB. For this, installation on wooden or metal profiles is used. Drywall is fixed in a similar way. The difference between OSB partitions is the resistance of this material to deformation, therefore, such interior elements do not bend under their own weight and are more reliably protected from cracks and other damage. OSB partition on a wooden profile

Secondly, some components contain grease and other substances that can seep through external finishing work and spoil the final look, so you should consider options for decorative material processing before finishing the OSB walls inside the house.

Finishing with paint or varnish

Painting or varnishing the walls is one of the budgetary ways to decorate the walls of rooms. But in order for the layers to lay down evenly, and in the future there were no unpleasant surprises, it is worth considering a number of points.

First, you need to inspect all the attachment points of the plates for not fully hammered nails or twisted screws. Such minor imperfections can lead to the appearance of rust stains through the paint.

An obligatory stage of work is surface priming.

In some cases, water-based paint is also suitable. Some builders recommend acrylic varnish for walls.

For reliability and aesthetic beauty, it is recommended to apply the coating in 2-3 layers.

Painting OSB boards

Preparation of OSB walls for wallpapering

Wallpaper is considered the most popular option for wall decoration, so they are used in rooms with walls trimmed with OSB slabs. Sometimes such a need arises in the process of redeveloping a space. So, before making a partition, you should make sure that it is in harmony with the rest of the interior.

Before you start pasting the wallpaper, the wall must be primed. When working, ordinary glue is used. However, for its greater efficiency, it is necessary to add PVA to it.

Wallpaper on the OSB wall

If necessary, you can make OSB boards plaster.

OSB wall putty can be used if there is a need for the finished wall to become universal for applying any kind of decorative coating.

After the completion of the preparatory work, a layer of putty is applied.
  4. After applying the composition, you can start priming the surface.

This option is convenient because now any decorative material can be used on top of the primer layer without regard to the features of OSB boards.

Processing the joints of the walls before puttingty

OSB boards are one of the types of wood-based materials that are in demand among builders and finishers. Such slabs are most often used for indoor wall cladding, small buildings in the form of summer houses, as well as for flooring. Since this material itself does not have a presentable appearance, painting OSB boards indoors is often almost the only option for completing finishing work. This technology has its own nuances. And before painting the OSB plate inside the house, you need to understand in detail the painting process, find out which paint is best suited for this purpose.

What types of OSB plates are there?

Oriented strand board (OSB) is a composite material with chips in the base. It is glued with polymers, adhesives, resins and other similar substances. In the manufacture, waste is taken after processing aspen, but some slabs can be created from other bases. These products are classified into several varieties according to their chemical composition:

  • OSB-1. Suitable for decoration where the humidity level is kept to a minimum. There are practically no moisture-proof components in the composition.
  • OSB-2. For normal moisture levels.
  • OSB-3. A finishing option where there is a high probability of large amounts of moisture entering the surface.
  • OSB-4. The variety with maximum durability. Best protected from liquids. Such plates are even recommended for use when working with load-bearing surfaces.

Most often, when finishing, they choose category two or three. It is on them that you should be guided when studying painting tips.

What are the advantages of painting?

Applying the right paints and varnishes will give the owners of a house sheathed with OSB plates the following advantages:

  • less effort and time when compared with traditional wall decoration;
  • the ability to mask the texture if it is created by large enough chips;
  • protection from moisture - the surface does not suffer from deformation, because water does not penetrate inside.

OSB painting for interior decoration is used only for interior decoration, because the outside of the slabs will experience a serious impact from the environment. The foundation will require more serious protection. This should be remembered by everyone who is interested in how to paint OSB slabs inside houses.

A layer of varnish is used when the painting of the boards is complete - then the pigments will not fade, and the base itself does not deteriorate at such a rate.

Choice of paint

How to paint OSB indoors, be it a residential building or summer house in the country? In principle, any formulations will help to complete the coloring. You just need to take into account that each material has its own characteristics when used. Consider several options for which paint is better to use:

  • OSB boards are made from resins and polymers, so solvent-borne paints will be the best solution. There is no doubt that paint adhesion will maintain maximum level, because the composition will penetrate into the panel.
  • Oil paints are a widespread traditional solution. High-quality coating is provided by high viscosity, low level absorption. As a result, a reliable layer is formed, protected from any negative factors.
  • Can be used alkyd enamels, take compounds for wooden bases. The materials penetrate deep enough into the base, but the coating is still durable. The alkyd mixture allows you to abandon such a stage as varnishing, which means that finishing becomes cheaper.
  • OSB is combined with coloring materials water-dispersed group. But, in this case, there is a high probability that the plate will swell after painting under the influence of moisture. This moment is taken into account even at the planning stage.

Material preparation

Proper preparation largely affects how high-quality the final staining result will be. The more thorough the preparation, the higher the adhesion of the material and substrate to other surfaces. Then and decorative layer will last much longer.

There are several important rules:

  • Painting can be done prior to panel installation, if applicable. But this option negatively affects the appearance of the structure. Therefore, more often they still process the cladding, the installation of which has already been completed.
  • Grinding is carried out carefully on the surface of the slabs. Standard sandpaper works great. This will not only mask the very structure of the slab, but get rid of the layer of protection, which often prevents the penetration of the primer into the depths.

The OSB-3 variety requires particularly careful grinding. The wax-lacquer coating is not so easy to remove.

Pre-processing is performed in the following sequence:

  1. We use putty in order to level the surface of any parts and places where self-tapping screws are attached. An oil-glue base is the best choice.
  2. Inter-slab seams are sealed with a glue-oil mixture. But the boundaries often become visible, remain a little noticeable. The advice from experienced craftsmen is not to waste time trying to disguise the material, but simply hide the seams themselves with decorative elements.
  3. When the putty is dry, it must be sanded until the surface is perfectly flat. How you can cover the OSB is a separate question.

The priming process is as follows. Here's what you can use:

  • The easiest option is water-based varnish for wooden surfaces. Acrylic or acrylic-polyurethane compounds are diluted using a 1:10 ratio. Then they are applied to the boards until the impregnation is uniform.
  • Alkyd varnish is one of the available alternatives. But for dilution, not water is used, but white spirit or other similar means. Then the painted object will look better.
  • A good alternative is the so-called adhesive primers. Such compositions help to create high-quality surface protection from paint.

Dyeing technology

How to paint OSB? The instruction looks standard for those who have had at least one-time experience with coloring compositions:

  • We take a brush of a suitable width to paint the entire perimeter of the primed surface or an individual board. The layer thickness increases at the edges. The paint will still absorb and the protection is improved. You can also use a roller, so the composition will be more evenly distributed.
  • The first, base paint layer is made in a small thickness. The main thing is that when laying the paint, the direction is one. When using water-dispersed formulations, it is important that all paint is distributed over the different places the surface is the same. It is impossible to completely get rid of the swelling of the OSB-plate. Therefore, it is important that this process remains at least uniform.
  • The panels must be thoroughly dried. Inside the room there should be no sudden temperature changes, drafts.
  • The second layer is applied at least 8 hours after the completion of the previous stages. The strokes should be applied perpendicular to the previous coats.
  • The operation can be repeated until the surface looks appropriate. Buildings are covered with compositions using slightly different technologies.

Painting OSB plates at home is not as difficult as it seems at first glance. Indoors, the material is influenced by a minimum number of environmental factors. Therefore, the outer layer must meet less serious requirements. But even in such situations, the selection of material becomes of paramount importance, as well as adherence to the work methodology. Therefore, it is important to study the recommendations provided by professionals. It's good if there is an opportunity to study in advance as many tips as possible along with training videos, especially if the work is done by a novice master.

Suitable products (22 photos)

The use of sheet materials in construction and home decoration has long been known. But if in the past it was necessary to do only with chipboard, fiberboard or plywood, today the ranks of traditional samples have been replenished with new analogues with improved properties, which makes them more suitable for certain types of work.

One example of such products is OSB boards for interior decoration, which will be discussed below.

What is OSB board?

OSB (OSB) is an oriented strand board. The material is a panel made from pressed softwood shavings and deciduous trees. Chip sizes can be from 60 to 150 mm.

OSB plates have high strength and density, due to the combination of several layers in them. In the middle, the shavings are located across the sheet, and in the lower and upper layers - along.

All layers of material are pressed under high temperature and pressure and impregnated with waterproof resins and paraffin. As binder apply phenolic and formaldehyde resins. The finished slabs have a homogeneous structure - no cracks, chips or cavities.

Is it harmful to use a slab for interior decoration?

The possibility of using OSB for interior decoration depends on the marking of the product, which in turn is determined by the amount of synthetic resins in the material, which release during operation harmful fumes.

The largest amount of toxic substances (from 10 to 30 mg per 100 g of dry matter) is contained in plates of class E2 and E3. OSB panels marked E0 and E1 contain a minimum proportion of harmful components - from 6.5 to 10 mg. These are, as a rule, products foreign manufacturers: Glunz (Germany), Norbord (Canada), Egger (Austria).

Thus, the products of the last two brands are the most suitable for use for interior decoration.

Materials of the same class E2 and E3 can only be used for outdoor work.

To protect yourself from buying "dangerous" material, it is worth considering some points that partially determine the correct choice of OSB:

  • smell of slabs. With a high content of harmful substances, the material smells strongly of formalin and cheap plastic;
  • products must have a certificate certified by the stamp from the manufacturer or supplier. A copy of the document can be requested from the seller;
  • it will also not be superfluous to inspect the packaging, if any. Products from serious manufacturers are usually labeled and provided with information inserts.

How to make a partition from OSB inside the house and with what screws to fix it?

OSB - quite suitable material for the construction of internal partitions of rooms. The strength and light weight of the sheets clearly testify in favor of this product. OSB boards can be mounted on a metal profile (like gypsum board) or on wooden frame.

If the second option is used, the wood should be treated with protective materials against mold and mildew, as well as with fire retardants.

Now with regard to partition installation diagrams, which will be considered using the example of a wooden frame:

  1. At the place of installation of the structure, markings are made. Lines are drawn along the floor and ceiling, which will serve as guidelines for the installation of horizontal guides.
  2. Along the marking lines, beams with a cross section of 4x6 cm are fixed.If the wall will be subjected to serious loads (for example, it is planned to hang furniture on it), it is better to use thicker bars - 5-8 cm. The guides are fastened with dowels.
  3. Vertical racks are installed, which are fixed to horizontal beams using metal corners and self-tapping screws.
  4. After installing the racks, the OSB panels are mounted.

They are fixed with self-tapping screws, whose length depends on the thickness of the sheets and should be 45-50 mm more than this value. For example, when using a material with a thickness of 12 mm, the recommended length of self-tapping screws will be 60-65 mm.

Self-tapping screws are screwed in the middle of the plate with a step of 30 cm, at the edges - every 15 cm. The distance from the edge is 1 cm. A gap of 1 cm is left between the plates and the floor. The same gap should remain between the OSB and the ceiling.

Also, the panels should be installed not close to each other, but at a distance of 3 mm from each other. This will protect the sheets from deformation due to changes in humidity.

Internal wall cladding

This process, just like the above procedure, requires the preliminary construction of a frame, for which all the same wooden beams or profile are used. Now an example for arranging the lathing will serve metal version as the timber frame was discussed earlier.

Wall decoration with OSB slabs consists of the following stages:

  1. The first step is, as always, the markup.
  2. Further, vertical CD profiles are inserted into the installed guides and also fixed - to the wall using self-tapping screws and metal hangers, to horizontal guides - with drilling screws. The spacing between the posts is the same as in the case of a wooden frame.
  3. To give rigidity to the crate, the vertical posts are reinforced with transverse profiles. With a standard ceiling height (2.5 m), it will be enough to install two elements for each span.

Installation of slabs is carried out in accordance with the rules mentioned in the instructions for the construction of partitions.

How to decorate the slab inside the room?

The interior decoration of wooden country houses, as in the photo, can be completely different in cost and design. For surface finishing from OSB sheets are used various materials... Let's consider them further.

Is it possible to mount drywall on OSB?

Can. Moreover, for this it is not necessary to use a metal profile, but it is enough to fasten the material to the base with self-tapping screws.

The main thing here is that the humidity level in the room was not high, since otherwise it can lead to deformation of the OSB and, consequently, the plasterboard sheathing itself. Self-tapping screws are screwed in along the perimeter and in the center of the gypsum board in increments of 10-15 cm.

Painting with varnish and acrylic paint

Varnish increases moisture resistance OSB boards. This finishing method is good for damp rooms. The boards can be painted with any varnish intended for natural wood. The surface is cleaned of dirt, degreased, cleaned with sandpaper and treated with a primer. The varnished OSB has a smooth surface, but retains its texture.

Also a good option for finishing OSB is acrylic paint. It rolls well with a roller on the surface and forms a durable and breathable coating.

For the best effect, it is advisable to paint in two layers.

Plastering with gypsum plaster

Putty materials do not adhere well to wood. Therefore, it is best to use formulations that have maximum adhesion to wood surfaces. This can be dry mixes "Rodband" or "Goldband" containing polymer additives and most suitable for working with wood. Vitonit KR can be used as a finishing putty.

Before filling OSB primed with a special compound, where glue, interlining and a little putty mixture are added. If this measure is neglected, then the impregnation of the base can act on finished surface, as a result of which the finish will become stained.

How to plaster the surface of OSB boards?

For plastering OSB, it is best to use a special mixture. For example, Knauf sevener... The plaster finishing technology itself includes the following steps:

  • The joints between the plates are putty and pasted over with a serpyanka.
  • The surface is treated with a primer (you can take Knauf Tifengrund).
  • The first layer of plaster is applied and the reinforcing mesh is embedded in it.
  • Covering and leveling layers are applied on top.

Glass wallpaper sticker

If the plates smooth (sanded), wallpaper can be glued directly to them. Otherwise, you will have to plaster and putty the surface, doing it according to the technology described above.

Glass fiber is glued to special compounds. In this case, dry mix "Methylane Fiberglass Premium" and granular composition Methylane Granulate Premium.

How to glue ceramic tiles?

You can paste it in several ways:

  • fix the expanded mesh on the surface and lay the cladding on any adhesive for ceramic tiles;
  • install directly on the OSB board using an adhesive for deforming surfaces;
  • use epoxy grout instead of adhesive.

The liquid wallpaper

This type of finish is applied to OSB as well as an ordinary wall... You just need prepare the foundation by sealing the joints and treating the surface with a primer.

Per 12 hours before the start of work the composition of liquid wallpaper is kneaded and left in a plastic bag. Finished material applied with a spatula evenly from 3 to 7 mm.

One of the advantages of this material is that it is not afraid of small defects surface. They are simply smoothed out when the mixture is applied.

Is it possible to sheathe a sauna and a garage inside the OSB with a stove?

OSB sheets are a material that is suitable not only for finishing residential premises. It can also be successfully used for covering a bath or garage.

In the first case, of course, you only need to use eco-friendly brands of material.

OSB in the bath should be processed 2-3 coats of water-soluble varnish, which will give the surface a shine and protect it from the effects of moisture.

As for the garage cladding, here OSB of any marking is suitable, since in non-residential premises, concern for the environment is the tenth thing and the harmfulness of the material does not matter.

From all of the above, we can conclude that OSB boards are a versatile product suitable for use for various types of finishes. This quality, combined with the strength of the panels, makes OSB a worthy representative of the sheet materials category.

How to putty OSB with your own hands - a detailed course for beginners:

The use of OSB boards today is so extensive that it can be found almost everywhere: both inside and outside structures. This is due to the high performance properties of the material and its ease of use. We will figure out for what purposes you can use OSB sheets, how to choose them and what to look for when finishing the surface inside and outside buildings.

The material is so reliable that it can be used to decorate the house from the outside

Using material inside

I am often asked the question, is it possible to use OSB for interior decoration? There are no obstacles to this, since quality material always has certificates confirming its safety for human health.

Variants with increased moisture resistance tolerate adverse influences much better

Wall cladding

OSB is perfect for interior wall decoration. It is important to collect all the necessary materials before work:

Materials used Specifications
Frame material
OSB slabs The size of the sheets is 2440x1220 mm, as for the thickness, it can be from 6 to 30 mm, you need to choose the option that suits specific situation... The most commonly used sheets are 10-11 mm thick, but standards may vary. The quantity is calculated according to the area to be covered
Frame material Here we need either wooden blocks or a metal profile. It is up to you to choose the option that best suits your home. Metal is more expensive, but it does not deform with changes in temperature and humidity, wood is cheaper, but the frame can "walk" with fluctuations in temperature. Most often, wood is used, but this does not mean that you cannot put a profile
Fasteners Interior decoration requires reliable fixing of each element, so close attention must be paid to the fasteners. For work, you can use either self-tapping screws or screw nails, they fix the material much better than ordinary ones, which means they will provide high reliability of the finish

If you purchase OSB for decoration, then it is better to purchase material that has already been sanded at the factory. This will greatly simplify your life and save a lot of time when applying decorative coatings.

The choice of fasteners should be approached responsibly

As for the tool, in all cases you need approximately the same set, I will list everything you need here, and I will not write about it in other sections, since this list will be relevant there as well.

You need to have the following on hand:

  • If the lathing or frame will be attached to concrete or brick, then you need a hammer drill with drills of the required diameter and length. It can also be used as a drill by turning off the hammer mode and placing the chuck under drills for metal or wood. Such a versatile option is the most convenient today;
  • For twisting individual elements construction and fastening OSB sheets you cannot do without a screwdriver to the frame with self-tapping screws - it is unlikely that it will be possible to tighten the fasteners with your hands, it takes too much effort. If nails are used for fastening, then you naturally need a hammer, this tool is at any construction site;
  • It is impossible to carry out high-quality work without measuring tool... You can use a wide variety of devices: from classic options, like a plumb line and tape measure, to high-tech in the form laser level and the same roulette. The markup is done using a regular construction pencil, although special options such as felt-tip pens can be used.

Laser tool - a new word in convenience and precision

Now let's figure out how the walls inside the house are finished using OSB plates:

  • First of all, you need to mark the future position of the frame, for this, a level and a plumb line are used, it is important to determine the position of the elements in advance, so that later you will not be constantly distracted by the control of the plane. Most often, the elements are placed close to the walls, it is important to find the most protruding section and dance from it when marking;
  • It is important to clearly define the distance vertical posts, they should run along the edges of each sheet and in the middle, creating a stiffener. Most often, the pitch of the frame elements is about 40 centimeters, the thickness of the bar should be at least 40 mm in order to ensure the convenience of attaching our OSB plates to it;
  • The frame is fastened depending on the type of base: the structure is fixed to the tree with self-tapping screws, and to concrete and brick - with dowels. To strengthen individual sections (the same openings), you can additionally install metal corners. If you have a frame house, then the structure will already be present and you do not need to build anything, the main thing is that the insulation is laid and the vapor barrier membrane is fixed;

Finishing inside OSB with plates can also be done on a metal profile for drywall

  • The material is fastened according to strict rules: there should be a gap of 10 mm between the OSB board and the floor, the same is left along the ceiling. It is also important to place the sheets not close to each other, but at a distance of 3 mm from each other, this will exclude deformation of the surface during changes in humidity, because the material reacts to them;

It is important to comply with all the requirements indicated in this diagram.

  • As for installation, self-tapping screws or nails are placed every 15 cm at the joints of the sheets and at a distance of 30 cm on the intermediate posts. Along the edges, that is, above and below, it is recommended to place the fasteners even closer - every 10 cm. The work is done carefully, you should not place the fasteners closer than 10 mm from the edge, since there is a high probability of material cracking.

Such decoration of a room in the country looks very appropriate.

Sheathing of ceilings

This option is most often used in country and country houses, but it can also be implemented in an apartment, if it fits the interior, the work is done in the following sequence:

This option is not suitable for all premises.

  • First of all, you need to fix the guides around the perimeter of the room, the easiest way is to pre-apply the markings using a laser level or a construction cord in order to have clear landmarks. Installation is carried out either using self-tapping screws, if the structure is wooden, or using dowels for other bases;
  • Next, you need to fix the rest of the frame elements, here it is important to constantly monitor the plane and carefully fix each part of the structure. If the fastening is not made directly to the ceiling, but with a gap, then the easiest way to work is to use direct suspensions for drywall, with their help you can clearly set each rack and secure it securely;

Indoor decoration can be done directly along the beams, but it is preferable to fix the waterproofing material

  • As for fixing the sheets, the process is similar to that described above, it makes no sense to repeat all the requirements. Here we can only note the fact that if you built metal carcass, then you need to use self-tapping screws with a small thread pitch, and not with a large one, as in wood.

The easiest way to fix the material is with a screwdriver.

When working on the ceiling, it is important to foresee the cable laying in advance, and it is best to put it in a special corrugated box to ensure safety.

Flooring

A floor made of OSB slabs is not only reliable, but also original, therefore this option is found more and more often, as for the work process, it can be divided into several main stages:

The workflow is very simple and straightforward

  • First you need to determine with what thickness the sheet will be used, a lot depends on this... So, with a thickness of 15-18 mm, the distance between the lags should be no more than 40 cm, if the thickness is 18-22 mm, then the lags can be located in increments of 50 cm, and if the thickness is 23 mm or more, then between the lags there can be up to 60 cm.That is, if you already have logs, then you need to select an OBB plate for them, otherwise your floor will turn out to be unreliable;

This floor needs to be done correctly

If you already have a flooring in the form of a board or other material, then you can attach the OSB directly to it, you just need to pre-level the surface if there are irregularities on it.

  • Next, it is worth considering the location of the sheets, they always fit perpendicular to the position of the lag, and all joints should fall on the support. As for the long side, for the floor it is necessary to use a special version of the OSB slab with a groove-comb connection system, since fastening the elements with brackets or other fasteners is not the best solution, and the strength will be several times lower;

OSB board with tongue-and-groove connection ideal for floors

  • Regardless of the base on which the floor will be located, the surface must be waterproofed, for this it is laid special film that will protect the material from below. If insulation is needed, then the heat-insulating elements are placed in the frame as tightly as possible;
  • The OSB is fastened using self-tapping screws, which are necessarily recessed so that the cap is located below the plane of the floor, this will simplify it further finishing... A deformation gap of 10 mm must be left between the slab and the walls in order to compensate for the reaction of the material to changes in humidity and temperature. Laying starts from the corner, this is also an important condition for reliable installation.

Material fastening works are not difficult

Using OSB for exterior walls

Due to the high moisture resistance, OSB-3 and OSB-4 can be successfully used for exterior decoration. We will not consider the option of laying sheets on the roof, since this is not a finish, but a base arrangement, but the wall cladding requires the most close attention. This method is ideal for frame structures, as well as for the protection of old buildings, finished with wooden clapboard.

Let's figure out how the outside cladding is made from OSB boards, first I will show you a diagram that shows the ideal structure frame structure, this will allow you to understand how the entire workflow should be carried out, because we only analyze its last stage.

As you can see, the design is very solid and reliable.

External finishing is carried out according to the following algorithm:

  • The entire surface of the facade must be covered with a windproof film, which will protect the structure from adverse influences and allow all its elements to maintain their strength and reliability for as long as possible. Fastening the material is easiest to do with a special construction stapler;

The entire surface to be trimmed must be covered with a film.

  • Next, you need to fix the outer crate, you can use both a bar and a planed board for it, it is much more convenient due to its large width. The distance between the elements depends on the thickness of the OSB slab, most often the 10-12 mm option is used, under which the lathing should be fixed in increments of no more than 40 cm;
  • As for the location of the sheets, then all the requirements that apply inside are relevant also outside. The distance from the top and bottom should be at least 10 mm, and gaps of 3-5 mm should be left between the sheets, since the temperature drops outside are greater, which means that the material will expand more;

If OSB panels are sewn up walls without gaps, then at the joints the material will constantly deform

  • Concerning window openings, then it is best to cut them directly into the sheet, this is the most durable option. It is important to make a reliable frame for the opening in order to secure the material as best as possible;

It is important to correctly arrange the openings

  • Fastening is done using screw nails 50 mm long or self-tapping screws 41 mm long. The spacing at the joints is 15 cm, at the edges - 10 cm, on the elements in the middle of the sheet that are responsible for rigidity - 30 cm. The distance from the edge is at least 10 mm, or even better, 15-20, which is why it is better to make a crate of materials wider.

For exterior decoration of the house, OSB is excellent.

Decorative coating options

I deliberately did not go into every section about what can be applied to the surface and how to do it. I will talk about the most popular options in one chapter, and you will choose the best one depending on your situation. It will be easier and clearer this way.

Dyeing

If you need a fast and inexpensive finishing walls or ceiling, then this option will be the most optimal solution, in addition to low costs, it is good and the simplicity of the process. But in order to achieve the best result, you need to know whole line important conditions and recommendations:

  • First of all, you need to check all the caps of the fasteners, if some of them are located above the level of the sheets, then they should be drowned to a depth of 1-2 mm. Self-tapping screws are tightened with a screwdriver, and the nails are deepened with the help of a doboiner, since it is problematic to drive them into the depth with a hammer;

Doboinik allows you to deepen the heads of the nails below the level of the material

  • It is recommended to round off all ends on sheets using sandpaper, this is necessary so that there are no smudges of the composition around the edges. Of course, it is best to use materials with polished ends, but it can be very, very difficult to find such materials;
  • All attachment points, as well as the joints between the sheets, are sealed with a sealant on acrylic base ... It is great for OSB and allows you to hide all problem areas. Another plus of this type of formulations is that they are easily stained if necessary, unlike silicone sealants... After drying, all excess is easily removed with sandpaper;

Acrylic composition is excellent for preparation for painting

If you are going to cover the surface with varnish or another compound that does not hide the structure of the material, then it is best to use acrylic sealant of the Pine color, it is best combined with the OSB color and is almost invisible after application.

  • Before finishing the walls from OSB inside the house or outside the building, it is necessary to prime the plane. This is due to the fact that the surface has uneven absorbency, and if it is not prepared, then any paint and varnish composition will lie unevenly. It is best to use acrylic-based compositions with a strengthening effect for painting, they are applied with a brush or roller over the entire area;

The soil must cover the entire surface

  • If, after the material has dried, you find that the pile has risen on it, then it is necessary to grind the base with sandpaper with a grain of M150 or less. After all the flaws have been removed, the primer must be repeated, only after that it can be considered that we have qualitatively prepared the base for the finishing;
  • Both paint and varnish can be used as a topcoat, it all depends on the purpose of use and the type of base. If paint is used, then it is best to use options on an alkyd or acrylic base, although water-based formulations suitable if you are using a moisture-resistant board. The work is carried out in several stages, it is best to apply 2-3 layers in order to obtain a reliable and durable decorative and protective layer;

Easier and quickest to apply paint with a roller

  • If you are applying varnish, there are different options available. After all, it can be a ceiling made of OSB plates and its finish will not undergo wear and tear, or it can be a floor that is under constant load, and if a fragile composition is applied, it will quickly become unusable. Acrylic lacquer works well for ceilings and walls, while high-strength polyurethane-based options are best for flooring.

The polyurethane compound fills in all irregularities and creates a smooth, wear-resistant surface

Putty

If you have not yet decided how to finish the OSB, but you are firmly convinced that the surface will either be plastered, or pasted over with wallpaper, or painted over, then you can prepare the base by putting putty on it. The putty allows you to get a perfectly flat surface that can be finished as you like, and this is the undoubted plus of this solution.

There are many opinions among experts on how to properly carry out the work, I will tell you about the option that I tried myself and which showed itself in the best way:

  • First, you need to clean the surface of dust and dirt, just wipe it with a rag and check if the screw heads or nail heads are sticking out. They must be recessed 1-2 mm below the level of the plate, and if this is not the case, all flaws must be eliminated before starting other work;
  • Since OSB boards undergo a special treatment, there is always paraffin or wax on the surface, these materials impair the adhesion of the compounds, so you must definitely walk over the surface with an emery bar to remove the paraffin and make the material rougher. This is a tedious but very important step, which must be done if you want the best possible result;

For large volumes of work, it is best to rent a grinder, so you will speed up the process at times

  • Then it is necessary to close up all the seams between the sheets, for this you can use a nitro putty, but I prefer a lightweight putty for bodywork. It is very flexible and at the same time has excellent adhesion, it can quickly and reliably seal all joints. And there is no need to worry that the composition will fall off, it will withstand many years, because its strength is an order of magnitude higher than that of construction options;

For sealing joints, you can purchase the cheapest options for compositions, they are perfect

  • When the composition is dry, you need to remove minor flaws sandpaper, after which you can start priming the surface. For this work, I use adhesives, they fit perfectly on OSB and create a rough surface that is suitable for any type of finish. Simply put, we get an excellent foundation for any purpose and can apply anything on it without puzzling over how to finish OSB;

There is a special composition for OSB, which is applied before finishing the surface, but any adhesive primer will do.

  • Any putty is applied to the surfaces prepared in this way, here the work is no different from ordinary ones, you need to monitor the uniformity of the layer and carefully seal up all the irregularities, if any. After drying, the surface must be sanded with sandpaper or a special mesh. On such a base, you can safely glue wallpaper, you can apply paint, because you get an ordinary putty surface;
  • If you decide to apply decorative plaster on top, then you can additionally strengthen the surface with fiberglass mesh, this will ensure maximum strength of the finish. It is recommended to lay it for outdoor decoration, inside it is not necessary at all.

This is what the structure of decorative plastering looks like.

Using all the recommendations, you can easily figure out how to decorate a house from OSB from the outside or how to process a ceiling. It is important not to violate the technology and use only moisture-resistant materials, since they are much stronger and more reliable.

Output

OSB plate is an excellent modern solution that is suitable for different purposes and can be used both for interior and exterior decoration. It is important to fix the material correctly and securely, and then trim it to protect it from adverse influences and make it more attractive. appearance... Oriented strand boards, although they have an interesting pattern of pressed wood shavings, nevertheless, cannot be left uncovered. This is especially true of OSB on the facade of the building, where the panels are open to all winds, rains and suffer from other surprises of changeable weather.

OSB needs to be protected from:

1. Moisture. Although for facade work, waterproof OSB boards of class 3 or 4 are used, if they are not covered with a protective material from the outside, after a while they will be saturated with moisture from the soil and atmosphere and begin to swell.

2. Temperature jumps and sun rays can also damage OSB boards over time. In addition to darkening of the wood filler, the case can result in the destruction of the resinous binder and peeling of the surface. True, such serious damage is more inherent in low quality panels. The most important thing is that oriented strand sheets are highly flammable materials (group G4) and need protection from fire inside and outside.

Sheathing OSB

There is a rich choice here: clinker tiles, hanging bricks, lining, siding - the list could go on and on. But why do developers use OSB on the facade? To reduce the cost of construction. It is with this attitude that you need to approach the selection of finishes.

1. Vinyl or acrylic siding is an economical material that will fit any facade. You can pick up panels that look like a block house or brickwork.

The plus is that if the facade of the house is sheathed with OSB, it is not necessary to mount the crate on a flat plane. But what you cannot do without is without a windproof waterproof membrane, otherwise the siding, "sweating" from the inside, will cause the slab surface to swell.

Polymer facing products are produced with a thickness of 0.8 to 1.2 mm, but the larger this figure is, the longer they will last. Both types have good strength characteristics, are resistant to chemicals and do not support the spread of fire. Siding easily tolerates heating up to + 85-88 ° С and, subject to production technology, does not fade in the sun. Acrylic panels behave slightly better than PVC, but they have no serious differences. Price - from 240 to 1210 rubles / m2.

2. Decorative stone - such a facing will allow you to turn an OSB building into a solid brick or stone house, at least in appearance.

The process of finishing the facade from OSB is quite complicated and costly, but the durability and ease of repair will further compensate for these costs. To prepare the slabs, you will need silicone-based frost-resistant sealants and antiseptic soils. On top of the panels, you will have to fix polystyrene foam, putty it, and then cover it with reinforcing fiberglass on top and glue decorative products.

Artificial stone is made from Portland cement, which provides it with a high strength grade (from 150 and above). In addition, such a cladding withstands more than 100 freezing cycles, has a water absorption rate of 4-9%, which can be improved by a hydrophobic coating. Price - from 750 to 1450 rubles / m2.

Finishing slabs

1. Plaster.

At the right choice plastering compound, it will extend the life of the particle board for many years and help to make its surface more fire-resistant on the outside. The consumption of facade plaster on a flat surface of the OSB will be minimal, but the associated costs will completely "eat up" the money saved.

The panels will need to be insulated from the moisture contained in the mixture (ideally, covered with expanded polystyrene) and reinforced with a special mesh. Finishing it will be best done with textured decorative plaster on an acrylic base. It is elastic so as not to crack at the joints of the slabs. Silicone is more expensive, but it has greater frost resistance, which is quite relevant in our latitudes, and the highest strength indicators. The cost of acrylic plaster per 1 m 2 is 137-320 rubles, silicone plaster - 425-1010.

2. Varnishes and paints for OSB facades.

Paints and varnishes - the cheapest type facade decoration for OSB. Water-based or oil paints on wood marked "for outdoor use". It is undesirable to use water-soluble paintwork materials for OSB, as they will lead to uneven swelling of the surface layer.

But the OSB staining technology will need to be observed clearly:

  • Fill in interpanel seams acrylic sealant.
  • Thoroughly clean and prime the surface of the boards.
  • When applying primer and paint, pay special attention to the ends, since they are the most vulnerable point of the sheet material.
  • The edges of the OSB must be painted to visible rounding of all sharp corners.

Oil paint is ideal option for particle boards on the facade, but here you have to take into account that it must be updated every 2-3 years - so quickly it will lose the original saturated color... Consumption when covering the base with a primer does not exceed 200 g / m2. At a cost of 80 to 540 rubles / kg, facade decoration will be inexpensive in any case.

Acrylic paint has a high abrasion resistance - up to 5000 cycles with Ceresit - while it is elastic and does not undergo cracking. Consumption is 3-4 m 2 / l, but most of these products can be diluted with water (up to 10% of the total volume). The price varies from 57 to 285 rubles / liter.

Acrylic varnishes with their waterproofness have such a valuable property as the ability to "breathe". Before coating the OSB board with varnish, it should be sanded, if this was not done in production, and degreased. The surface of the panel is primed, then varnish is applied. Transparent will accentuate the chip pattern and give the facade a noble shine, but you can also use tinted varnish if the pattern is not so important.

If the OSB plane seems slippery, then wax or paraffin was used to make it. Before finishing, it is covered with a primer paint with the addition of fine quartz dust (sand) - it will provide better adhesion to the next finishing layer... The varnish dries up quite quickly - in just a day, forming a sunscreen and frost-resistant film that is resistant to abrasion. Consumption for a single layer application is 8-10 m 2 / l, the price is 149-550 rubles / l.

OSB plate - durable and reliable material for cladding facades, but even the highest quality brands of its resistance to atmospheric phenomena are not large enough. A properly executed protective coating will help to get rid of this deficiency. The selection of products is large enough to easily find the optimal combination of beauty and final value.
