Wood shredder: features of the chopper and ways to do it yourself. How to make a wood chipper with your own hands

Very often, gardeners and public utilities face the issue of disposing of household waste in the form of various shrubs, twigs and tree trunks. If large wood waste can be sawn and used in wood-burning stoves, then other tree remains are simply thrown away or burned. With the tightening of environmental requirements, this type of disposal began to give rise to a lot of questions from the relevant government services, which began to impose penalties on the perpetrators. The appearance on the market of mechanisms, shredders of branches, made it possible to solve all these issues.

Disposal of wood waste mechanically

The process is the passage of cut tree trunks and branches through the nozzle of a branch chopper equipped with a disc or a rotor with knives. As a result, wood pulp (mulch) is obtained.

The advantages of this type of wood waste treatment:

  • Legality of this disposal method. Disposal of this type of waste in garbage containers not approved by the utilities, and dumping in the wrong place can result in a fine. Waste burning is also prohibited.
  • Obtaining excellent fertilizer. For an individual gardener, it is an unacceptable generosity to take out biological waste from a garden plot. Thereby depleting their land.

The use of artificial fertilizers is not as effective as natural ingredients. Using a chipper to grind wood waste, it is possible to obtain excellent component of compost fertilizer. Shredded sawdust sprinkled beds and garden paths.

The business has also learned to profit from the grinding of waste in the form of shrubs, twigs and other plant components, obtaining various compositions of organic fertilizers.

The disadvantages include the price for a crushing machine for grinding waste from processing trees. Although it is worth noting that due to savings on fertilizer, it is possible to recoup the cost of a wood chipper, not to mention business projects for the sale of fertilizer additives.

Types of crushers for crushing branches and branches

There are two main most commonly used wood shredder mechanisms:

  • autonomous (gasoline or diesel);
  • electric.

Autonomy of production should be attributed to the advantages of a chopper on combustible fuel. When fuel is available it will work at any distance from power sources, which is of great importance for working in large areas and at a distance from electrified settlements.

Petrol wood shredders are more powerful and allow you to process a volume of about 70 mm.

The disadvantage is the noise and the exhaust of toxic substances. Although modern technology reduces these problems to a minimum. Also worth noting is more complex maintenance.

Grinding on an electric machine allows you to work with much less noise than on petrol. There are no harmful emissions. In addition, it is much lighter in weight.

The price of electric chopper models is lower than gasoline ones, as is power. But tree trunks of about 40 mm are quite tough for an electric crusher.

The main disadvantage is the attachment to the power source. Power failures and lack of voltage make it useless to use an electric grinder model.

Types of knives used in wood shredders

For shredder motors cutting mechanisms are of great importance devices. There are three types of knives:

Power of crushing mechanisms for crushing branches

Unit power - an important component in processing branches. In addition to the thickness of the chopped branches, the volume of processing and the duration of the uninterrupted operation of the chopper depend on this.

Not all consumers need powerful mechanisms of branch shredders, so the manufacturer allocates devices for various purpose groups:

  • non-professional (amateur;
  • semi-professional;
  • professional.

Non-professional wood chipper models do not have much power(around 1.6 kW). Able to grind branches up to 30 mm. They run on electric motors. They may well serve the garden plot with new plantings.

Models of the second level have a power of 2.6 kW. They can be petrol or electric. Cope with branches up to 40 mm.

Professional crushers are characterized by increased power up to 8 kW. Equipment weight up to 100 kg. They work on petrol engines. Allow to grind branches up to 75 mm.

What to look for when choosing a wood shredder?

For the amateur gardener, there is no need to purchase a professional shredder. With a constant power supply enough to buy a simple model branch shredder.

If there are old plantings of shrubs that are planned to be cut down, it is advisable to purchase more powerful models of crushers.

For utilities and entrepreneurs, professional shredder models are suitable.

In addition to power and power sources, you should pay attention to the design of the chopper knives. Since various devices of cutting planes make it possible to obtain crushed wood waste of various sizes, such as small sawdust and small chips.

Additional features of crushers

Household models of branch shredders, in addition to crushing branches, small tree trunks, can grind other organic waste: grass, wood chips, various plants. This is especially true after the end of the harvest of horticultural crops: tomatoes, cucumbers, etc. Processed and used seedlings serve as excellent components for compost and caring for garden beds.

What to pay attention to when working on wood shredders?

All mechanisms of this type require special care and proper use in accordance with the documentation. The main thing that must be paid special attention so as not to spoil the mechanism:

  • the objects to be disposed of must be no more than the processed volume provided for by the chopper instructions;
  • prevent stones, plastic, fabric, glass, etc. from entering the receiving funnel;
  • do not process shrubs, roots with soil on the root system;
  • For the least wear on the chipper, it is preferable to process fresh wood waste.

Safety requirements when working on a shredder

All work on crushing branches and branches must be done in goggles or a mask. Depending on the power of the wood chipper, chips can fly, so it is advisable to cover your face and head completely.

Gloves on the hands should be tight-fitting and not slip off the hands. It is necessary to dress in such a way that parts of clothing cannot get into the mechanism of the chipper. Do not straighten stuck objects while the engine is running.

The wood shredder is an essential household tool. The price of simple models allows almost everyone to purchase it. Currently, it is being widely introduced into all personal households. And only the lack of information about its benefits does not allow its use everywhere.

It is possible to predict that in the near future, the chopper will become an indispensable item of garden tools any farm.

Consumption ecology. Farmstead: After sawing fruit trees or construction, there are a lot of unnecessary branches, boards and lumber. Especially for such cases, a wood chipper was invented. A new device is quite expensive, but, fortunately, making a wood chipper with your own hands is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance.

Every owner of his own plot, whether it is a country house or a small cottage with a garden, knows that it is sometimes very difficult to maintain order on it. The problem of waste disposal in the private sector is particularly acute, and if organic matter can be stored in a compost pit, and plastic and bottles can be taken to a landfill, then what about the abundance of wood litter? After sawing fruit trees or construction, a lot of unnecessary branches, boards and lumber remain. It makes no sense to leave them for firewood, but burning them is very long and troublesome. Especially for such cases, a wood chipper was invented. A new device is quite expensive, but, fortunately, making a wood chipper with your own hands is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance.

Purpose and principle of operation

A wood chipper will become an indispensable tool for any summer resident. With it, you no longer need to make fires to burn the sawn off tree branches or think about where to put the waste after harvesting - stems, tops, roots, etc. The machine will process any organic solid waste into chips and shavings, which will subsequently serve as an excellent material for high-quality compost or fuel for solid fuel boilers. So, in one fell swoop, you solve several problems: garbage disposal, saving space and time, get an endless source of material for fertilizers and a supply of fuel for the winter.

Like it or not, a wood chipper is very useful on the farm, but factory mechanisms are prohibitively expensive, so we suggest saving money and making it yourself. The most encouraging thing is that there is no need to "reinvent the wheel" - you just need to correctly repeat the design of the factory device using available parts.

But before starting work, it is necessary to thoroughly study and understand the principle of operation of the machine. Otherwise, you will not be able to make the right drawing and make it a reality. The device of the grinder is outrageously simple - it is an engine, a shaft with cutting elements, a frame, a protective shell and a receiving compartment through which the material enters. Since such a unit will turn out to be quite heavy, it is better to install it on a two-wheeled base in order to easily move around the site.

The principle of operation of the device is as follows: the motor rotates and moves the shaft through a chain or belt. When you push the branches or stems of plants into the receiving box, the cutting elements cut them into small pieces that come out the other side of the device. Very similar to an ordinary kitchen meat grinder.

Chopper device

Before choosing a scheme and purchasing the components of a future chopper, you need to decide on its purpose, that is, what exactly (or most often) it will chop - thick branches of fruit trees, small boards or plant residues after harvesting. The power of the device, the type of its operation and, accordingly, the cost of the necessary parts depend on this.

chopper motor

For garden shredders, you can use gasoline or electric motors. Each of them has its own characteristics of use. For example, with a gasoline engine, large thick branches can be processed, and it is also valued for its mobility. A device with an electric motor, on the contrary, must always be close to a power source, but it takes up much less space than a gasoline one. It is light and easy to use, but will not cope with overly large objects due to low power.

What to look for when choosing a garden shredder motor:

  • power up to 1.5 kW is enough to grind branches up to 2 cm thick;
  • more powerful engines of 3-4 kW are able to process branches with a diameter of about 4 cm and are suitable for gardeners;
  • an engine of 6 kW or more will cope with thick branches of 10-15 cm, and it is recommended to choose them for owners of large farms and farms.

Since a homemade chopper in most cases is designed for various jobs, it is better to choose the “golden mean” for it - a 4 kW electric motor or a 5-6 horsepower gasoline equivalent.

Chopper knives

The second important part of the chopper is the cutting elements or knives. The type and principle of operation of the mechanism, as well as the size of the processed material, depend on their design. So, a simple disk with knives will grind only fragile branches into dust, combined designs can process thick branches and produce the same small chips, there are those that grind wood into chips 2-10 cm long. If you plan to use recycled material for solid fuel boilers, it is better to choose the latter option.

Since our goal is to copy one of the factory models of the chopper, consider the knives used to produce them:

Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to make the described models of knives on your own, therefore, for home-made devices, their own cutting elements were invented: a knife-disk design, a set of circular saws and a two-shaft system with 8 knives.

Chopper Blueprint

To make a wood chipper, it is not enough just to buy the necessary spare parts, you must have professional locksmith skills. The whole process takes place in three stages - the creation of a drawing, the preparation of materials and the assembly of the apparatus.

Since we are not going to come up with anything new, you can take any suitable chopper model as the basis for the drawing, and add the rest at your discretion. To create a drawing, you can use a special computer program AutoCAD.

We have described the main components of the mechanism above, but this is only a general view. The most important thing to pay attention to when creating a drawing is the location of the knives and the angle of their cut. Let us consider the development of a chopper design with a two-shaft cutting element.

So, the shafts will be between the plates, and each shaft will contain 3-4 knives. To fasten the cutting elements, it is better to use bolts, shifting them relative to the central part of the shaft. The shaft rotates freely thanks to 4 bearings, which are fixed on the plates. The synchronism of the movement of the shafts is provided by 2 gears that drive the motor. To transmit torque, use a belt or chain of your choice. Depending on the size of the knives and the diameter of the raw material that you are going to grind, vary the gap between the shafts.

If you use a 4 kW electric motor, its speed is 2500-2800 rpm. This indicator is good for a disk mechanism designed for thin branches and stems of plants. The two-shaft mechanism must be powerful, so the number of revolutions must be reduced.

The images below show drawings of a wood chipper with 2 shafts, each with 3 knives:

The disk model looks much simpler mainly due to the simple design of the knives.

The drawing can display the disc diameter, the number of knives and their location. The more knives, the finer the raw material will be at the output. The disk can be positioned vertically or at an angle.

A stud with circular saws is attached to the frame. Often in such devices a belt is used to drive, so two pulleys should be made on the shaft and stud.

Most of the materials needed to assemble the shredder can be purchased at the auto market, farm equipment store, or hardware store, but some parts will have to be ordered or made by yourself. To do this, you need to be able to work as a grinder and a welding machine.

Double Shaft Chopper

The work on creating a two-shaft shredder consists of the following phases - assembling the frame and receiving compartment, creating a chopping drum with knives, installing the drum and engine.

Necessary materials:

  • engine;
  • plate 10 mm - 2 pcs;
  • gear - 2 pcs;
  • pulley - 1 pc;
  • shaft for knives - 2 pcs;
  • bearings with fasteners - 5 pcs;
  • knives;
  • profile pipe;
  • sheet metal (thickness 2 mm).

The first step is to make a frame. To do this, cut 4 parts from the profile pipe: 2 - 40 cm each, 2 - 80 cm each. Fix the short parts between the long ones at a right angle with a welding machine to make a frame. The distance between the two inner crossbars must be such that the chopping drum can fit between them.

In order to subsequently move the chopper, wheels must be attached to it. To do this, fix 2 racks on the frame, on which the axle and wheels will then be held.

Mechanism assembly:

  1. When the frame is ready, you can assemble the chopping drum. To make a shaft, take a square blank for 4 knives or a round one for 3.
  2. For a square blank, grind the ends, making them round so that they fit into the bearings. If you are using a round stock, sharpen its center by making 3 flat cuts to install the knives.
  3. The knives themselves can be easily made from Kamaz springs. Cut off the desired piece of the spring, align it if necessary, heating it in a forge and hitting it with a hammer several times. Harden the part and let cool.
  4. Make holes for the bolts in the knives.
  5. Sharpen the knives on the machine, choosing a cutting edge angle of 35-45 °.
  6. Attach the knives to the shaft and mark the attachment points. Drill holes at the marked points and thread them.
  7. To make a chopping drum, take two plates - these will be the walls. Use a welding machine to cut holes in them for bearings and grind the edges. If it is not possible to do this step on your own, you can contact a locksmith workshop or an enterprise.
  8. Install the bearings in.
  9. Attach the plates to the metal walls with bolts.
  10. Insert the shafts into the bearings and secure them.
  11. Connect the walls with threaded metal studs and fix them with nuts.
  12. It remains only to make a receiving compartment through which the wood will get inside. To do this, take sheet metal and make 4 identical blanks in the form of a parallelepiped.
  13. Find the narrowest side of each workpiece, step back 5 cm from it and bend the edge.
  14. Bend the remaining three blanks in the opposite direction.
  15. Assemble the box and make sure the blanks fit snugly together.
  16. Connect the edges with welding or self-tightening rivets.
  17. At the base on the bent sides, drill holes for fasteners.

Disc chopper

Unlike a twin-shaft shredder, the disc shredder requires far fewer parts, time and effort to assemble.

Necessary materials:

  • motor;
  • knives;
  • profile pipe;
  • metal sheet to create a disk;
  • sheet metal 2 mm thick for protective shell and receiving compartment.

Such a small number of parts is due to the low power of the apparatus. If a two-shaft mechanism can grind thick branches up to 10 cm in diameter into chips, this one will cope with a maximum of 2 cm. Knives can be made as described in the instructions above.

Progress:

As you can see, nothing complicated, the main thing is to get all the necessary details. A homemade wood chipper with two shafts has a lot of power and is designed for processing large branches. Chip sizes can be controlled from 2 cm to 8 cm depending on the number of knives per shaft. published

You can use old branches from bushes and trees in your garden as compost, so do not rush to get rid of them by setting them on fire or throwing them into a landfill. And in order to speed up the decay of the branches, you need to cut them finely with a chopper. The video below shows how to make this garden tool with your own hands. There are also factory appliances, however, they are expensive, and if you want to save money, you can make a chopper with your own hands from improvised means.

There are the following types of wood shredders, which differ in the type of engine:

  1. petrol;
  2. electric.

Also, these devices are usually divided into:

  • industrial;
  • household.

The higher the power of the main unit, the more efficiently the work on processing wood into sawdust is carried out. Gasoline appliances are preferable due to their high power, however, in cases where you need to make a device with your own hands, it will not be easy to get such an engine. You will need to find a two-stroke internal combustion engine, for example, from an old cultivator.

In fact, any such garden device is based on such components as:

  • engine;
  • a receiver in the form of a funnel, which is welded from steel;
  • mechanism in the form of a belt, gear transmission;
  • cutting tool - it can be a milling cutter or a saw blade;
  • output box or collection device.

If everything is clear with the engine, then another explanation must be given about the receiver and transmission mechanism. The branches will begin to be fed for processing in a special funnel, in which, after passing through the saw unit, they will become dust. Thus, this receiver must have a funnel-shaped inlet to concentrate all the available engine power and cutting parts in a limited area. In addition, it is easier to feed the material for processing, which often comes in different shapes, and to protect your hands.

The cutting knot must be approached with a great deal of enthusiasm. The fact is that many factory-made crushers have milling or milling-turbine knives, and it is difficult for a home master to find them. It is much easier to do otherwise: take a pair of circular saws with a diameter of about 20 cm, and use spacers on a steel shaft to assemble the cutter with your own hands.

Any device is brought into working position by transferring the mechanical energy of the motor shaft to the crushing units. This mechanism can be of 3 varieties:

  • belt;
  • chain;
  • gear.

The output during crushing is carried out by a box with a length of at least 20 cm. Thus, sawdust is stacked compactly and neatly, and does not scatter around the crusher.

Preparatory stage

In this case, it is necessary to calculate the necessary metal products and small standard parts, the total number of metal required. The drawing should contain the locations of the holes in order to attach the chopping drum, power unit and drive belt tensioners. Mark the location of the support legs with wheels.

In order for the finished chopper to be stable during operation, regardless of the size of the crushed branches, before starting to manufacture with your own hands, you need to provide for the dimensions of the support platform of the unit. The drawing should also provide for which type of engine to choose. The performance of the garden tool and operating costs will depend on this. When using the device stationary at a short distance from the house, you can use an electric motor.

Stages of work on assembling the device

Do-it-yourself steps for making a device necessary for a garden:

  1. Frame assembly

The frame of such a garden tool is made of metal profiles with dimensions of approximately 50 by 50 mm. To do this, you need to cut off 4 blanks with a grinder, the length of which is about 400 mm and 2 blanks 800 mm long. Then you need to weld short segments perpendicular to the ends of long blanks so that a rectangular frame comes out. The two remaining segments should be fixed inside the frame at a distance from the extreme crossbars, which correspond to the installation dimensions of the engine and drum.

On a rectangle, at one end of the frame of our garden tool, by means of electric welding we fasten a metal sheet of similar dimensions, 5 mm thick. It is necessary to cut elongated holes in the sheet at a distance and with a diameter identical to the motor mounting parameters. We weld 4 legs to the corners of the frame, the height of which is 50 cm. They must be connected to each other in the lower part with a profile of 20x20 mm by welding.

  1. Engine installation

In order for the manufactured tool to be with optimal power, we install an electric motor with a power of 5 kW on it, bolted to the elongated mounting holes of the plate. Thus, they will facilitate easy movement of the power tool when the cutterbar drive belt is tensioned.

The tension mechanism is based on an angle that is welded across the structure at the end of the frame and 2 tension bolts. At the two ends of the corner, we drill holes according to the diameter of the tension bolts, which at one end are inserted into these slots, and at the other they are attached, by means of small corners, to the nearest engine mounting bolts. The process of tensioning or loosening the belt will be carried out by tightening or unscrewing the nuts on the bolts, from the outside of the edge of the corner of the tension mechanism.

  1. Manufacture and fastening of the chopping drum

The chopping drum of the unit is installed at the end of the frame opposite from the engine. We make the drum from a piece of steel pipe, the length of which is approximately 40 cm and the diameter is 30 cm. We weld plates to the ends of the cylinder, drill holes in them in order to install the shaft on bearings. We cut rectangular windows at the top and bottom of the cylinder for loading material with dimensions of 100 by 15 mm and the exit of the crushed mass of 20x30 mm.

We weld 4 paws to the lower window of the drum in order to attach it to the frame. On the support legs of the drum and on the frame, we make holes with a diameter that corresponds to the dimensions of the mounting bolts. We fasten the knives on the steel shaft of the chopper to 2 disks that are welded on the ends of the shaft and corresponding to the diameter of the drum.

We make them from old knives of agricultural appliance choppers. We cut them off a little longer (by 3-4 cm) the distance to the disks. Before fixing, we bend the ends of the knives and make 2 holes in them on each side. You can also use ordinary circular saws, which are commercially available at any hardware store. We drill such holes on the installation disks. We install 3 knives on the shaft and fix them with bolts.

We insert the shaft into the holes in the end of the casing, we put bearings with bearing caps on the ends of the shaft. We attach the covers to the casing with bolts. The second method of manufacturing a chopping drum is that on a special axis we fit about 9 circular saws, the rotation of which is carried out by means of intermediate shaft bearings from a VAZ machine.

An important point: it is necessary that there is a small distance between the circular saws, because if you install them close to each other, the teeth of neighboring saws can catch on and the efficiency of the device is reduced.

Finally, we attach pulleys to the protruding ends of the shafts of the drum and the electric motor. The rotation from the engine will be transmitted through a belt drive. For the convenience of loading branches and our safety while working with the chopper, we weld a loading hopper to the upper window of the drum, which is made of metal 2 mm thick. The height of the hopper should be about 40 cm, the size of the upper part is 30 by 40 cm. The ejection window is equal to the receiving one, which is located on the drum body. We attach an output bell to it, the length of which is approximately 20 centimeters. Thus, we managed to make a garden tool with our own hands, which will help us get sawdust from ordinary wood.

Storing branches from small bushes and trees is a problem that most gardeners and summer residents face after winter cleaning. Wood shredder is a technology designed to solve the problem of wood debris. With this device, you can quickly turn large branches into small chips and use it as compost.

general characteristics

There are many signs by which you can classify shredders, but the main ones are:

  • Engine's type.
  • Appointment.

Wood waste chopper by type of engine is:

  • Electric.
  • Petrol.

According to the purpose of the crusher are:

  • Household.
  • Industrial.

A gasoline engine has a higher performance (makes the chips much thinner), but making such a device with your own hands is not easy enough, since you have to find a two-prong internal combustion engine. In addition, such devices are harmful to the environment due to the emission of gasoline residues.

As for the electric engine, such devices are less powerful and are great for small cottages. Such a chopper can be easily made with your own hands practically from improvised means.

A standard chipper for turning wood waste into chips consists of the following components:

  • Engine.
  • Knives are cutting tools. They can be of two types: milling cutters or saw blade.
  • Gear or belt drive.
  • The receiver is in the form of a funnel, preferably steel.
  • Collection device, it can be replaced with an outlet box.

Something that needs to be clarified about the receiver. Branches will be fed into the funnel, which, after passing through the saws, will become small chips.

The receiving mechanism must necessarily have the form of a funnel. This is done so that the engine can concentrate the power of the saws in a limited area.

To make a cutting module with your own hands, you will have to turn on your imagination. Shop crushers usually have milling knives. It can be quite difficult to find such elements at home, so you will have to make the cutter yourself. For this, several 20 (in diameter) centimeter saws and a steel shaft are taken, on which saws are assembled with the help of dividing washers.

No grinding device can work without a transmission mechanism, which is of three types:

  1. Geared.
  2. Chain.
  3. Belt.

There is no particular difference between them, therefore, when making a device with their own hands, everyone chooses based on their capabilities and desires. It is worth noting only that the most simple in execution is a belt mechanism.

Training

Drawings are the main element, without which not a single stage of assembling the chopper with your own hands can do. Here the exact dimensions of the length and width of the structure should be noted.

In addition to the dimensions of the device, the following should be noted:

  • Calculate the amount of materials for manufacturing.
  • Paint the drawings of the structure itself, in particular, mark the locations of the holes for fastening the case and other components.
  • Mark the area where the support racks with wheels will be located.
  • Type of engine used. The choice should depend on the needs of the owner.

An important detail that many people forget about is the support platform. It is necessary for the device to be stable during operation. The drawings must indicate the dimensions of the site.

DIY chopper

Do-it-yourself assembly of a standard apparatus consists of three main stages:

  • Assembly of the body (frame).
  • Engine mounting.
  • Chopping drum attachment.

Let's start in order.

Frame

The frame for the grinder is made of a metal profile having a size of 50 by 50 mm.

For this:

  1. We cut off 4 blanks with a grinder. The first two 400 mm. length, and the second - 800 mm.
  2. We weld 400 mm. cuts to the ends of long blanks so that a rectangular frame is obtained.
  3. The remaining blanks, there should be two of them, are fixed inside the frame. The length from the extreme crossbars should be equal to the dimensions of the engine and drum.
  4. Using welding, we attach a sheet of metal profile to the resulting square. Its thickness should be 5 mm. Holes for mounting the engine should be cut out on the sheet.
  5. We install four legs at the corners of the case. Their height must be at least 50 centimeters. The lower part of the legs is connected with a profile of 20 by 20 mm. by welding.

Engine mounting

For the optimal power of the device with your own hands, a 5 kW engine is enough. It must be attached to the mounting holes with a plate. This will allow the power tool to move while the cutter drive belt is tensioned.

A homemade tensioner is a corner welded across the body, which is fastened with two tension bolts. At 2 ends of the corner, it is necessary to drill holes that correspond to the dimensions of the bolts for fastening. One end of the tension bolts is inserted into the slots, and the other end is attached to the engine mounting bolts using small corners.

chopping drum

A homemade chopping drum is mounted on the opposite side of the frame from the engine. The mechanism itself is made from a piece of steel pipe, 45 cm long and 35 cm in diameter.

We make a drum and mount the drum:

  1. A plate must be welded to the end of the cylinder. In it, we first make holes on which the shaft will be attached in the future.
  2. On both sides of the cylinder (bottom and top), we cut out rectangular windows for loading wood materials. Approximate size 100 by 20 mm. It is also necessary to make holes for the exit of chips. Their size is 30 x 40 mm.
  3. Four paws should be attached to the lower window, which will serve as fastening of the mechanism to the frame. We create holes on the paws and the body, the dimensions of which are equal to the bolts for fastening.
  4. The chopping knives are mounted on two discs welded to the end of the shaft.
  5. A homemade cutting mechanism can be made using knives from old grinding devices, we use a length of no more than 4 centimeters.
  6. Before fixing the knives, their ends must be bent and two holes must be made on each side.
  7. We mount the shaft in the holes made in the end face of the casing. At the end of the shaft we put on bearings, on which there are support covers. They are bolted to the casing.
  8. We attach pulleys to the protruding ends of the shaft.

If everything is done correctly, then with your own hands you can make a device that saves a lot of time cleaning the summer cottage.

Video - a lecture on how to make a do-it-yourself branch crusher.

Today, processing industrial facilities use special devices such as crushers. With their help, the grinding of materials into particles of a certain fraction is carried out.

Also, such crushers are widely used in woodworking enterprises and in other areas. The wood chipper is used for crushing wood waste. (Read the article on how to make a wood chipper with your own hands).

Such installations are used to prepare material for production or waste disposal. This is a mandatory process, since wood is a long-rotting waste.

Of course, you can take out the waste in an unprocessed form. But, given the presence of such installations, this is an irrational solution to the problem. The fact is that chopped wood rots much faster. In addition, much more waste can be removed at a time than in the case of whole pieces.

Principle of operation

The wood chipper has a different design. It depends on the capacity of the installation, the scope of application and functionality.

So, a mulcher is a special device that is installed on a power vehicle, for example, a tractor. The device is a frame in which knives are placed for chopping branches and small trees.

In addition, there are other types of crushers that are used not only in industry, but also in everyday life. The principle of their work is that the tree is crushed to a certain level.

In installations used in industrial facilities, the grinding level can be set independently. As for garden shredders, they basically work in the same mode.

Garden shredders have a fairly simple design and are easy to use. They are an indispensable assistant in the garden. But, the main thing is that they can be easily made by hand.

Criterias of choice

Today, the market offers a wide range of units used for crushing wood.

Each model has certain technical characteristics that you should pay attention to when choosing a device:

  1. Installation power. The main indicator of the unit is performance. This parameter mainly depends on the power of the power plants.
  2. Purpose of the unit. Some shredders are used to crush small branches, boards and grass. Others serve to grind logs, thick branches and other wood waste.
  3. Type of fuel. Wood chippers can run on electricity or on combustible fuels such as gasoline or diesel.
  4. Mobility of installations. Grinders, depending on the size and functionality, are stationary and mobile. The second type of devices is mainly used in everyday life, while stationary ones are used at industrial facilities, where large amounts of work are provided.
  5. Functionality. In professional crushers, it is possible to adjust the level of grinding. As for crushing machines used in everyday life, they have a simple design, which does not provide for changing the grinding mode.

Specialist's note: When choosing a wood chipper, it is worth considering that the power directly affects its size. Thus, installations with high productivity are bulky.

The device of a simple garden shredder

Garden shredders are an indispensable tool in the garden and in the garden.

In the process of caring for the site, wood waste will appear, for the storage of which free space will be required.

Garden crushers solve this issue in just a few minutes. With their help, you can quickly chop branches and small boards, which will facilitate their further removal. Wood chips can easily be bagged or composted.

Such crushers have a fairly simple design and are very easy to use. They mainly consist of the following elements:

  • motor;
  • working shaft on which the knives are placed;
  • metal frame;
  • protective cover;
  • receiving box.

To facilitate transportation, the device is mounted on a two-wheeled base. The principle of operation is that the torque is transmitted through a chain or belt to the working shaft. Wood waste or firewood is fed into the receiving box, where it is crushed.

Such a unit can be easily built with your own hands. You just need to develop a drawing of the installation and purchase parts.
