Water-based paint for ceramics. How to choose a varnish or paint for ceramic tiles, instructions for application and safety precautions

A few years later, the tile becomes unusable, loses its former attractiveness and shine. Replacing tiles entails significant costs, which is why many are looking for an option to update them without significant capital investment. The best and most economical way to renovate it is to paint the ceramic tiles.

Experts recommend painting only those walls that do not get water, and just paint the wall near the shower stall or bathtub with drawings. To paint the tile properly, you need to prepare certain tools and materials.

Namely, such as:

  • Soft and metallic sponge;
  • Degreasing cleaners;
  • Gloves;
  • Fine sandpaper;
  • Respirator;
  • Roller and brush;
  • Primer and paint.

Painting a tile or floor tile involves several stages. Initially, you need to carry out preparatory work, and thoroughly clean the tiles, wash them from dirt, grease and other debris. To do this, you need to use degreasing agents. After cleaning, the tiles must be well dried and treated with an alcohol or vinegar solution.

On a perfectly smooth surface, the paint will quickly flake off, which is why you need to go over the entire surface with fine sandpaper.

You need to grind it until the surface becomes slightly rough. You also need to process the seams and remove dust. After sanding and cleaning the surface, you need to treat it with a primer, apply paint in several layers. After the surface is completely dry, you need to carefully process the seams with a putty. To change the state of the tile and give it a beautiful shine, varnish is applied. Varnishing will not only protect the tiles from damage, but also give the floor a beautiful fresh look.

Tile varnishing is carried out for surfaces such as:

  • Ceramic tile;
  • Cladding made of natural stone or brick;
  • Concrete floors.

You can also varnish clinker tiles. To carry out all the required work, a varnish made on the basis of acrylic with the addition of small particles of ceramics is used. After drying, the surface becomes glossy and harder, which prevents mechanical damage. If you need to varnish absorbent surfaces, then you need to wait until the glue is completely dry, and only after that process the tile with varnish. The varnish should be applied in a uniform and not very thick layer. Do not apply paints and varnishes on a surface whose base is exposed to constant moisture. You can apply varnish on the surface of the floor tiles yourself, which is very simple to do, it is only important to follow the instructions for use and adhere to safety precautions.

How to properly paint the tiles in the kitchen

You can paint ceramic tiles in the kitchen with your own hands quite easily and quickly. You can also make a very beautiful painting that will emphasize the overall design of the room. This option is considered the most cost-effective tile upgrade option. It is possible to very quickly improve the condition of the tile joints.

In particular, you can:

  • Paint;
  • Treat with a vinegar solution;
  • Replace grout.

After painting the tiles, it is important to know what to do with the joints. Light inter-tile seams darken very quickly, lose color and become covered with a greasy coating. The seams between the tiles are easiest to paint. For this, the most common paint or marker is suitable.

Before painting, you need to thoroughly clean the seams from dirt and dry them well.

If the tile joints have darkened, then most likely the cause is mold. You can clean it with a mild vinegar solution. Then gently wipe the seams with a soft cloth or sponge. The most difficult and reliable way is to replace the grout. To do this, you need to remove the top layer of the old grout and apply a new filler.

Selection of paint for ceramic tiles

After a while, dark spots begin to appear on the ceramic tiles, it fades, and the tile joints begin to darken and allow moisture to pass through. This is especially true for porous materials with a matte surface. There is a wide variety of porcelain stoneware paints that can only be used in dry or wet rooms.

There are such types of paints and varnishes as:

  • Alkyd enamel;
  • Polyurethane paint;
  • Epoxy enamel;
  • Latex water dispersion paint;
  • Special coating.

Alkyd enamels are characterized by good adhesion and are suitable for various surfaces such as plastic or porcelain stoneware. They can be used to paint tiles, but this can only be done in dry and well-ventilated areas. It can only be applied to walls, as it has a slight wear resistance and is not suitable for floors. Paints made on the basis of polyurethane resins are characterized by high adhesion to absolutely any surfaces. They are resistant to mechanical damage and do not flake off under the influence of high temperatures and humidity.

Important! For epoxy and polyurethane enamels, use an appropriate primer made with organic solvents.

Paints based on epoxy resins create a durable and hard coating on the surface of porcelain stoneware tiles. The enamel adheres very well to the surface and protects it from moisture. Latex paint adheres very well to all surfaces. It is durable, reliable and at the same time does not have any unpleasant odors at all, which is why it is completely safe for use. When working with such paint, no preliminary priming is required.

The nuances of using epoxy paint for tiles

In order to beautifully and permanently update an old but durable decorative tile, you need to take very seriously the choice of paint used. When choosing the most suitable dye, it is imperative to take into account the adhesive properties of the surface.

They may be:

  • Weak - tiles;
  • Moderate - clinker or ceramic tiles;
  • The good ones are plaster.

In addition, when carrying out staining, it is imperative to take into account the location of the tile. If it is necessary to carry out work in damp rooms, such as a kitchen or a bath, then moisture-resistant paints and varnishes are used.

Epoxy paints are best suited for floor treatment, as they lay in an even layer, dry quickly, are easy to clean, and are resistant to mechanical damage and abrasion.

When painting tiles, it is best to use less toxic mixtures. For ease of use, you can take acrylic-epoxy paints made in the form of an aerosol. There are many options for epoxy paints, differing in their composition and technical characteristics.

Why do you need paint for tiles (video)

Correctly selected and applied paint on the tile surface will allow you to achieve a very good result and return the surface to its previous shine and beauty.

Paint (Enamel) is a multicomponent product consisting of a binder (base), pigment, solvent and filler. Depending on the binder, paint and varnish coatings are divided into alkyd, epoxy, oil, acrylic, nitrocellulose, etc.

What is this article about

Selection of paint and varnish material (LKM) for painting ceramic tiles

When purchasing a paint and varnish material for painting ceramic tiles, it is necessary to pay attention to its physicochemical characteristics, conditions of application and further operation of the coating. All necessary information is displayed on the product packaging. The domestic manufacturer, as well as the manufacturers of the CIS countries, use a cipher in their practice, which will help the buyer to facilitate the choice of paint.

At the beginning of the cipher, the type of paintwork materials is indicated - paint, enamel, primer, etc. Then comes the letter code indicating the binder (GF - glyphthalic, PF - pentaphthalic, NC - nitrocellulose MA - oil, AK - polyacrylate, AC - alkyd-acrylic, EP - epoxy, etc.). Further, after the alphabetic code, there is a digital code, in which the first digit indicates the physicochemical conditions for the operation of the paintwork:

  • 1- weatherproof (for outdoor use)
  • 2- limited weather resistance (for indoor use)
  • 3- conservation paints
  • 4- waterproof
  • 5- special enamels and paints
  • 6- oil and petrol resistant
  • 7- chemically resistant
  • 8- heat-resistant
  • 9- electrically insulating and electrically conductive.

Example: the code “GF-115 red enamel” will mean that it is an alkyd enamel on a glyphtal basis “GF”, for external use “1”, red, 15 is a factory catalog number.

This code is not used on packages of paints and varnishes of foreign manufacturers. Therefore, you will need to contact the seller for advice.

Types of paints and varnishes for painting ceramic tiles

Oil paint

Tile oil paint (MA) is the cheapest option for painting tiles. Can be applied by brush, roller, spray. The drying speed of this paint is more than 24 hours and will vary depending on the type of varnish (oil) used as a binder, the type of pigment, and also on the drying temperature. Coatings based on oil paints are characterized by low hardness and low water resistance, and are subject to destruction when exposed to alkalis (soda, washing powders, etc.). This type of coating is recommended for painting tiles on walls indoors.

Attention! Oil-based coatings are short-lived and crack over time.

Alkyd enamel

Alkyd enamels are relatively inexpensive. Alkyd enamel coatings, in comparison with coatings based on oil paints, are more weather resistant, resistant to detergents and mineral oils. They are characterized by high hardness, gloss and moisture resistance. They can withstand temperature changes ranging from -50 to +60 ºС. The protective properties of such coatings are retained for 4 years. Rosin-based alkyd enamels are used to paint floor tiles.

Pentaphthalic and Glyphthal enamels

Pentaphthalic and Glyphthalic enamels (PF, GF) - have similar performance characteristics and are the most common of the alkyd enamels used for painting ceramic tiles. These include GF-115, PF-115 and PF-266. The enamels GF-115 and PF-115, due to their high weather resistance, are intended for outdoor use. PF-266 is used only for painting indoors, however, due to the high hardness of the coating, the enamel is recommended for painting ceramics located on the floor. It is recommended to use FL-03-K, 138, FL-OZZh as a primer for these enamels.

Nitro paint

Nitroenamel (Nitrokraska) (NTs) is made on the basis of nitrocellulose varnish. This paint for ceramic tiles belongs to the segment of inexpensive paints and varnishes that have a high drying rate (10-30 minutes) at room temperature. It is recommended to apply nitro enamel to the tiles using a spray gun; when painting with a brush, due to rapid drying, smudges and irregularities may form. Due to its high hardness, the paintwork has low elasticity, which will subsequently lead to the formation of chips from physical impact on the painted surface. One of the advantages of using nitro enamels is the high smoothness and specularity of the coating formed. It is used for painting both indoors and outdoors.

When staining tiles with nitro paint, in a damp room, whitish stains may appear on the paintwork.

Attention! Nitroenamel is toxic and fire hazardous, therefore work must be carried out in a respirator and a well-ventilated area.

Acrylic paints

Acrylic paints (water-based paint for tiles) are the most popular paints and varnishes for painting ceramic tiles. These include polyacrylate (AK) and alkyd acrylic paints (AC). Their disadvantage is the high price compared to alkyd enamels and oil paints.

Alkyd paints are highly moisture and weather resistant. Antiseptic agents such as penotex are added to some types of paint to prevent mold from growing on painted surfaces.

They are used for painting both indoors and outdoors.

Acrylic paints can be used for painting tiles in rooms with high humidity (bathroom, bath, sauna, pool, etc.). Available in both matte and glossy paint in different colors.

Glass paints

To apply decorative images (drawings) on tiles, so-called glass paints are used. It is impractical to use them for solid surface painting due to their high cost. Paints on glass are perfectly combined with each other, retain the brightness of color and contrast of shades, and are resistant to moisture. The drying speed of such paint is 3 hours. After drawing, it is recommended to apply a protective layer of transparent varnish on top.

Epoxy enamels

Epoxy enamels (EP) - coatings based on them can be classified as special-purpose coatings with high performance. They are recommended for painting tiles, if there is a need to ensure such properties as: resistance to mechanical stress; resistance to alkalis, solvents and oil products; waterproofness, resistance to weather conditions; dielectricity; fire resistance.

These coatings have high decorative qualities, resistance to wear, high temperatures and electricity. They retain their protective properties for 6 years.

The new formula provides an increased level of transparency for maximum gloss on glass.

Special attention has been paid to the saturation and richness of color, which recreates the effect of genuine colored glass.

Vitrail adheres well to non-porous surfaces such as glass, tiles and metal. However, the paints are not resistant to strong cleaning agents (dishes or sanitary ware).

Lightfastness (resistance to fading) is enhanced across the entire product line. For maximum light fastness, direct sunlight should be avoided.

For decorative purposes only! (exclude contact with food and exposure to high temperatures).

INSTRUCTION : glass painting with Vitrail paints

STEP 1: SURFACE PREPARATION

1. Clean the surface with methyl alcohol to remove dirt and allow to dry.

2. On porous surfaces (wood, plaster), first apply a universal primer

STEP 2: APPLYING THE CIRCUIT

(optional, to achieve the effect of colored glass)

NOTE: Outline paints are water based.

  1. For best results, use a template. You can apply the template to the surface using water markers. Use a Gold Cern yellow marker or a Silver, Gray, or Black Cern gray marker. Alternatively, when working on glass, place the template under the material.
  2. Hold the tube like a pen, gently touching the surface with the spout. Apply the contour using even pressure on the tube. Dry for 1 hour. Erase the felt-tip pen if necessary.

STEP 3: APPLY VITRAIL

  1. If done with Cern, use a synthetic brush such as L&B Multi-Craft Round # 4. Take a small drop of paint on the brush and apply it to the surface, staying within the outline. Too thin, as well as too thick a layer is not recommended, since in the first case the paint does not adhere well, and in the second the paint can get onto neighboring areas.
  2. When applying Vitrail to a plain surface with no contour, there are many application techniques. Try to apply paint in even strokes using straight or round brushes.
  3. DRYING: 12 hours after each coat, 3 days before using or washing the object. Air dry in a clean and dry environment.

MIXING Vitrail: All Vitrail Colors can be mixed with each other. For lighter, translucent colors, mix the paint with Colorless Vitrail to dilute the pigment (eg red + clear = pink). For duller colors, add some gray paint. For a marbling effect, move the paints around.

CLEANING / MAINTENANCE: Inaccuracies and errors can be corrected immediately with white spirit. Wash brushes and other materials also with white spirit. Painted items should be washed gently with warm water and a sponge. Dry immediately.

Do not immerse painted objects in water.

Ceramic tile varnish can give a second life to old wall tiles or dull, shabby flooring. Not many people know that building ceramics can be painted, artistically decorated and varnished, and this is also an excellent way to protect the surface from household dirt, scratches and moisture penetration. Let's try to figure out whether all paints and varnishes are suitable for these purposes.

It is clear that the first jar that comes to hand with a solution of natural or synthetic resins for application to ceramics is not suitable. For this, the construction industry has prepared products with a special composition.

Construction varnishes are solutions of synthetic and natural resins, prone to film formation, in water or organic compounds. To cover ceramic surfaces, use:

  • polyurethane varnishes (solutions of urethane polymers in aliphatic solvents);
  • acrylic varnishes (acrylic dispersion dissolved in water).

These are flowing colorless liquids with a small content of solid solids that protect ceramics and tile joints from dirt, moisture stains, dust, mechanical and chemical damage.

Lacquer coating:

  1. facilitates the maintenance of tiles;
  2. prevents fading;
  3. enhances the shine and contrast of the pattern.

The scope of these coatings is not limited to ceramics alone. The properties of acrylic and polyurethane varnishes allow them to be applied to bricks, plaster, natural stone, paving slabs.

In poor condition, staining of the tile is required for aesthetic reasons. The paint for ceramic tiles is applied under a protective coating, so there are no such stringent requirements for its composition as for varnish. A pleasant bonus is the waterproofing properties of certain brands.

For full or partial coloring, as well as manual application of an artistic pattern to tiles, the following are suitable:

  • acrylic paints;

  • alkyd enamels;
  • polyurethane (latex) paints;

  • oil and epoxy based paints.

To paint ceramic tiles with acrylic paints, you just need to wash them well and dry them thoroughly. Before applying paint, the surface to be restored is degreased with a solvent.

The varnish will allow the boring textured, matte, unglazed finish to become glossy and shiny, and the paint will provide repairs to the cladding of glazed ceramic tiles.

How to choose?

Oil paints, latex paints and epoxy paints are suitable for the continuous painting of ceramic tiles. In this case, a layer of a special primer is preliminarily applied to the surface. It is better to apply a fantasy pattern with special stained-glass paints on an acrylic base, intended directly for glass and ceramics.

Before painting ceramic tiles in the bathroom, experts recommend removing the old grout and replacing it with an airtight, moisture-resistant compound.

When choosing a protective varnish, you should pay attention to the following indicators:

  1. waterproofness;
  2. the degree of gloss (can be matte, semi-gloss, semi-gloss, glossy and high gloss);
  3. solids content by volume;
  4. hazard class for human health and the environment;
  5. organic volatile matter content;
  6. material consumption for processing 1 m² of surface (the lower the consumption, the more expensive the tile varnish);
  7. drying time (readiness for operational loads).

Instructions for applying to ceramic tiles

Before painting, ceramic tiles are washed with a stiff brush and a cleaning agent. Particular attention is paid to the seams. If the surface is in poor condition, the tile can be sanded with fine-grain sandpaper.

A prerequisite for successful restoration work is that each stage of decorating the tiles must be completed by thorough drying of the applied layer.

After removing dirt and dust, you can start restoration work:

  • use a lint-free cloth and a special solvent to degrease the tile surface;
  • apply a primer;
  • paint the tiles using a roller with a foam rubber surface (treat corners and hard-to-reach places with a paint brush);
  • Apply a protective varnish in a thin even layer (when working on the floor, the composition can be applied with a soft cloth).

Ceramic tiles can be painted manually or using a ready-made stencil. Beautiful, highly detailed designs are obtained using reusable industrial stencils. These forms have an adhesive backing, which prevents ink spreading and accidental stencil shift.

Many people are interested in whether it is possible to paint ceramic tiles in the kitchen, where the likelihood of contamination with grease, soot and food debris is especially high, and the tile apron is often exposed to hot steam. Experts say that this is permissible, since the protective varnish film for ceramics is resistant to detergents and cleaning agents.

Safety engineering

Before painting and varnishing the tiles, you should study the safety precautions for performing this type of work. To avoid dust entering the respiratory tract and eyes during the preparatory grinding stage, wear a respirator and goggles.

Even when using water-based paints and varnishes, painting and varnishing is recommended:

  1. in ventilated areas;
  2. in rubber gloves;
  3. away from heat sources and open flames.

Forbidden:

  • smoke during restoration work;
  • throw the remains of paints and varnishes into the sewer.

Paint on hands, tools and clothes can be removed using a special solvent.

Required materials and tools

Painting ceramic tiles requires the following tools and materials:

  1. cleaning sponges, wipes and cleaning brushes;
  2. liquid degreasing agent (solvent, industrial alcohol, acetone);
  3. primers;
  4. sanding mesh, fine-grained sandpaper;
  5. rubber gloves;
  6. respirator;
  7. brushes, rollers;
  8. a special bath for paint and varnish;
  9. masking tape;
  10. stencils;
  11. paint and protective varnish.

Artistic painting on tiles is performed using professional tools: graphite pencils, brushes, palette knife, airbrush (paint spray). This is a fascinating process that requires knowledge, experience and skill, therefore, in the absence of the necessary preparation, it is better to order the drawing of a professional.

It is not an easy task to decorate a shower room beautifully and, most importantly, practically! However, if you paint ceramic tiles in the bathroom, then you can achieve significant results in this matter. Today, this design method is relatively rare for many to come to mind, although it is an excellent option to decorate or update the interior without significant costs. In addition, you can create an original and at the same time quickly, the environment that will suit you.

Nowadays, painting of tiles is considered an unconventional, but very interesting type of bathroom decoration. Ceramic cladding can be called an unusual, but no less effective way to diversify the space. At the same time, some have a rational question about the need for staining. Possibilities of paint:

In addition, it must be borne in mind that only a certain amount of skill and a little creativity are needed to apply paint. And taking into account the flat surface of ceramic tiles, this idea becomes real and feasible in a short period of time without compromising quality.

Materials and tools

The simplest and most common tools can be used to paint ceramic tiles in the shower room. In addition, you will need some auxiliary materials that will facilitate the entire coloring process. Required set:

  • cellophane film;
  • a set of various brushes;
  • regular roller;
  • soil solution;
  • solvent;
  • dye;
  • masking tape;
  • palette.

In principle, these materials and tools are the smallest set with which you can paint the tile. This is enough for preparatory work, creating the outline of the drawing, applying the paint itself, as well as carrying out the subsequent stages.

Choosing paint

If we talk about the choice of the composition, then here, first of all, one should proceed from the type of premises. For example, for enclosed shower rooms, acrylic or epoxy solution is suitable. Acrylic paint has a bright color and is easy to use and apply. Epoxy dries quickly enough, and, in addition, it practically does not exude an odor, which makes it a good option.

Glossy mortar is best for gloss lovers, as it perfectly preserves the enamel coating and gives it shine. One of the brightest representatives is semi-matt satin enamel, which hides smudges. In addition, it masks various types of dirt well and creates the illusion of a velvet surface of the product.

Options for painting ceramic tiles can be found not only on the Internet, but also developed independently. Separately, it should be noted that it is required to take a responsible approach to the choice of paint. The highest quality specimens are best obtained from a reputable manufacturer. At the same time, inexpensive solutions do not always differ in the presence of the necessary components, and may also contain or release substances harmful to human health.

Design options

How to paint your bathroom tiles with your own hands? Today there is a wide enough variety of options to paint the tile. However, no templates or presets are provided. Therefore, any methods, approaches, as well as the imagination of the master performing the work are allowed. Although it is worth knowing the following gradation:

Preparatory stage

Before painting the ceramics, thorough preparatory work is required. The tiles must be prepared for processing. In particular, this applies to cleaning the surface from various contaminants in the form of dust or dirt. In addition, in order for the applied solution to lay down evenly and without defects, the ceramics should be washed with degreasing agents, cleaned from plaque, get rid of rust, glue or grout residues, as well as other components of the previous coating.

First of all, it is also required to carefully clean the seams between the surface details, since this is where dirt accumulates. If this is not done, then, perhaps, soon the appearance of mold, fungus and other microorganisms. A similar requirement applies to joints between interior items, furniture, plumbing, treated with a sealant.

Thus, at the final stage, all that remains is to degrease the surface of the tile. If the plans include opening with paint, then it is best to sand the material, then it will be much easier to work with it. After that, various defects, chips, scratches, and cracks should be eliminated using a special primer. This will additionally provide a secure adhesion of the paint and tile.

Application

Only after the tile surface is ready should you start applying the paint solution. Based on the selected style, along the borders of the future drawing, it is required to place the limiters in the form of a masking tape. This will allow not only not to stain the surrounding space or objects, but also to paint over the ceramics with better quality.

For better staining, a regular foam roller is suitable. It will help you easily and quickly paint over even a large surface. In the event that you plan to create a special or unique pattern without stencils, you can use brushes of various sizes. Moreover, the tougher models are radically different from the soft pile, so you need to approach this issue also carefully.

Tile painting is carried out in 2 stages. Initially, the base or base coat is applied, after which it is necessary to wait until it is completely dry. Then the ceramics should be painted again, and in a strictly perpendicular direction. In the case of painting the surface, you can take less paint, since one layer will be enough. However, then the paint should be more concentrated and richer.

It is worth remembering that you need to limit the use of the bathroom while the paint dries. Otherwise, the drawing may be smeared or damaged, and dust and dirt may enter. To speed up the drying of the solution, a comfortable temperature regime should be observed. The warmer, the faster the paint dries, and when painting a large area, the work should be done in several passes.
