Most choose the classic version of a bed made of wood, when the reclining seats are located one above the other, connected by a staircase.

The bunk bed can accommodate two children in the same room. Thanks to it, there is enough space for games and activities.

Whichever wood furniture is chosen, it is important to take care of safety. It is best if the bunk bed is against the wall and all sides of the top are securely fenced. If a child under 3 years old sleeps on the lower floor, a fence will also do the trick. Children often roll over in their sleep, so the partitions will protect them from falls. When the baby grows up, the fence from the bottom can be removed.

For adults

The difference between an adult model and a child model is only in size. For children, a length of 160–170 cm is suitable, for older people it is better to make a bed of 190–200 cm. The width depends on the preferences of a particular person and free space... In order not to spend money on an additional order of a mattress according to individual sizes, it is better to choose the standard version - 70–90 cm.

Usually a bunk bed is made of chipboard with your own hands for country house with limited living space. It allows you to host guests at night. In one-room apartments, such furniture will be ideal solution if the family has been replenished with a child. He will be able to sleep on the upper tier, and his parents - on the lower. In this case, the first floor should be designed for two.

The attic option from a bar will also save space. Below you can equip a full-fledged workplace and sleep under the ceiling. If the hostess does not like to be sat on her bed, and the area of the apartment will allow you to place either a sofa or a bed, you can put a bunk model. The upper part will be a bed, and the lower one will be made in the form of a regular sofa.

There is a fairly wide selection in stores classic models, but they are not always suitable for a particular apartment. If you make a bed out of wood yourself, you can solve several problems at once.

Materials for making

To create a bunk bed, you need to choose the material. You don't have to search for a whole array. Yes, it turns out wonderful models which serve for a very long time, but they require special skills. The array should be very good, only durable types of wood are suitable, they are usually expensive.

The following materials are used as a basis:

Chipboard or chipboard is used only for some parts of the bed, such as headboards, drawers, panels. You need to choose only safe plates of class E1 or E0.5;
edged or planed board... The material must be selected with great care. Damp wood can lead, it will change shape, warp;
MDF. It is MDF that is considered the modern analogue of the board. Plates are available in raw and laminated form. The edges of the finished bed are treated with a special tape;
furniture board. Pieces of wood are glued together to form a solid board. A person with carpentry skills should work with it.

The process of creating a bed requires tools that are used when working with wood and metal. You will also need measuring instruments, a pencil.

Bed stairs

Making a bunk bed also involves a ladder. V classic version the usual three-stage design is sufficient, but this is not necessary. It all depends on the chosen model. There are some where the ladder is replaced by ropes. The option with a slide looks very interesting, but you should not do it if the free area of the apartment does not allow it.

Ladders can be mounted vertically. They are tightly connected to the frame and do not take up space. There are also sloping options, which are easier to climb. The ladder anchorages must be closed.

The classic staircase consists of steps and railings. It is for them that the child will be able to hold on, climbing to the upper tier.

Drawing creation

In order to know how much material, fasteners, accessories will go, you need to decide on the bed model. If a person can create a drawing of a children's bunk bed made of wood with his own hands, then it is enough to sketch it on a piece of paper. It can also be done in a special PC program.

There are a few things to keep in mind. Such a distance must be left between the tiers so that an adult can net onto the lower bed without touching the upper shelf with his head, of course, if the height of the room allows it.

There should be sufficient distance between the second floor and the ceiling for the child to feel calm. Warm air accumulates at the top, so a lack of space can negatively affect healthy, full sleep.

The berth must be designed taking into account standard mattresses. Then they can be ordered at any store.

The principle of assembling a bed from wood

To make a bunk bed, which will become a favorite place for children to play and relax, you need to properly prepare the materials and process the details. Furniture makers in factories have access to a variety of equipment that makes the task much easier, but a good owner also has the right tools.

Preparatory operations:

boards need to be smoothed, leveled, adjusted to the required size;
parts are best fastened with several methods at once, including glue, self-tapping screws;
the side racks must be very strong, since the main load will go to them;
if there are roundings on the details, they should first be drawn on a paper template, and then transferred to a tree;
cutting is best done with an electric jigsaw;
after the manufacture of all parts, they are tried on;
dowels, which will hold the structure together, require special care.

After the bed is assembled, it is taken apart in order to finally connect with glue and self-tapping screws. If flaws are identified, they are corrected. You should not rush to assemble, since the bed must be securely fastened and stable.

Step by step manufacturing

For an inexperienced craftsman, it is better to start by creating a classic bunk bed. First, the base is made, while you need to act clearly according to the scheme. A rectangular box is created. To do this, boards are attached to the tsars, the angle should be 90 degrees. Supports in the form of bars are attached to the end parts with self-tapping screws. The crossbeams are placed in the created box, on which the mattress will lie.

You will need three boards to create the backrest. They need to be assembled with the struts of the structure using dowels and grooves. It is better that the connection elements are round, since the holes for them can be made with a drill of the appropriate diameter.

Note! Wood glue should be used only after preliminary fitting, when the dowels have come to all the holes in the racks and boards.

The foot is made in the same way as the back, the only difference is in the number of crossbars. The base of the second floor will rest on the upper parts of the backrest with the headboard, so it is important that they are level.

The upper tier is created following the pattern of the lower one. It is fastened with dowels. The structure should be reinforced with end boards. You can proceed to the installation of the stairs. The easiest option is when crossbars are attached to two posts. It is easier to use plywood for drawers. Special wheels need to be screwed to them, which will guide their movement. The drawers are ideal for storing bedding, toys and other items.

If the material has not been pretreated, the finished bed is coated with paint and varnish. It is better to use aqueous solutions, which are safer for health.

Retractable design

For a children's room, a pull-out bed is considered the safest; it is not high to fall from it. Partitions on two-story structures not in vain invented, but sometimes children get up in a dream and this can result in serious injury.

The advantage of a pull-out bed is that in the daytime Bottom part slides in, thereby freeing up space for games. Children will not quarrel over space as the beds are not connected to each other. They are used separately.

You can make such a bed yourself from chipboard. The base is made of a solid 18 mm thick board. The shield is attached to the sidewalls. The lower tier will be pulled out using four wheels.

A pull-out bed is a great space saver, easy to make, but does not allow you to store bedding in drawers.

Loft bed

Many parents are faced with the problem when the child does not want to sleep on their own. They just haven't created a decent loft bed for him yet. The design is so attractive that the child will happily change the parent's bed for the ability to sleep under the ceiling.

The main value of such a two-tier structure is in saving space. The bed is made on high racks, so the place to sleep is at the ceiling. A work area with a table and a chair is located under the lounger. The only thing to take care of is good artificial lighting, as the bed will give shade.

It is better to make a side staircase in the form of steps. V simple execution these can be ordinary wooden beams. Having tried, you can make steps in the form of drawers, on which it is convenient to walk, sit, store in them a lot of things you need for study.

The height from the floor to the second tier should be at least 120 cm. Although this depends on the person for whom the workplace is being created.

The loft bed can stand not only on racks, but also be attached to the wall or to the ceiling. The design depends on the selected drawing. If it was created from good tree, it is enough to open it with transparent varnish. A tree drawing always looks great in any room.

Bunk beds will always be popular with children and their parents. Children love bunk beds because they provide more play area and usually become part of gameplay... Parents love bunk beds because of their compact size. Bunk beds allow two children to share the same room or, for example, leave a friend to spend the night.

Although personally I am not a special fan of such beds - nevertheless, I know firsthand how to make a bunk bed - I made several pieces of them to order.

Many will notice that my drawings of a bunk bed are somewhat different from the finished sample shown in the photo at the beginning of the article. In particular, I did not paint the inner railing of the fence. When the bed constantly stands with this side close to the wall, there is simply no need for them, and the savings in lumber are obvious. If you need these railings, then you can add them without any problems during the implementation of the project.

The longitudinal strip, after gluing to the supporting board, it is advisable to additionally screw it to it with screws not to the full depth of the board, for greater structural reliability.

The crossbars are simply placed between the planks of the base frame without fastening, and are held in place by gravity.

The ladder is simply screwed onto the rest of the bunk bed structure and can be easily removed later.

If you plan to make do-it-yourself mattresses for a bunk bed, then it is best to make beds of a traditional size, i.e. 180x80 cm. The bed is made about 2 cm larger than the mattress on each side. In this case, it is necessary to take into account where the bunk bed will be installed and how the stairs to the upper tier will be connected. The staircase is best done with a slight slope. In this case, about 5 cm should be added to the size of the bed. It is necessary to choose the optimal height of the second floor. In this case, the height of the ceiling must be taken into account. If the ceiling is low, then you should not make the second floor too high, because the child will be stuffy and uncomfortable there. It is also better not to do too much distance, because this will make the bunk bed less stable and secure. The distance between the mattress of the lower tier and the floor should be about 30-40 cm. If the bunk bed does not deform under this weight, then it is quite stable. The second tier must be equipped with a fence. It is advisable to do it on the first tier.

The bunk bed should fit well into the interior. Even before starting work, you need to think about this and decide which side is best to install the stairs to the upper tier. The bunk bed should be as stable as possible. For this, it is fixed to the wall. In accordance with safety regulations, the bunk bed must be installed with a sufficient distance from windows and opening doors. When designing a bed with your own hands, carefully consider the material for its manufacture. In order to assemble the bed with your own hands, you will need both simple tools, which are in almost every home, and those that will need to be bought specifically for the manufacture of furniture. The list of tools includes the following:

Step-by-step instructions for making bed tiers

Assembling the bed begins with making the frames. In the future, it is on them that the mattresses will be laid. Frames must be rectangular. When assembling the bed with your own hands, you will need to be careful at every step. When assembling frames, pay attention to the perpendicularity of the sides. Provide the most reliable connection of the beams at the corners.

The most durable is the tongue-and-groove connection. In this case, you need to use a special glue.

Such a connection can only be made if a hand-held milling tool is available. In the absence of such, the connection is fixed from the inside with metal corners. The frame is equipped with spacers. If you bought or made a mattress of high enough rigidity, install one spacer in the middle. If the mattress is soft and will fit on a plywood sheet, you will need to make at least 4 spacers distributed along the length of the bed frame at the same distance from each other. After the frame is assembled, install the sides around its perimeter. They will provide additional support for the mattress. The sides on the bed with your own hands can be made from a board or chipboard. This completes the production of space for the mattress.

The first step is to make the racks. They will hold finished structure... This can be done in two ways. You can make 2 identical side pieces from furniture boards. They should exceed the level of the upper tier by 30-40 cm. To make the finished home-made structure look more beautiful, the shields can be rounded off. In addition to their main function, the sidewalls will act as additional barriers from the ends of the bed. Mark the surface of the boards and prepare holes in them, through which the connection with the frames of the loungers will be carried out. Use round head bolts for the connection. This option has its drawback. It consists in the fact that the lower tier in this case will be fenced off from three sides. This can be uncomfortable for the baby. Therefore, at this stage, it is better to assemble the bed with your own hands in his presence. Supporting racks can be made from thick timber. In this case, 2 side parts are first created from supports and lintels. They will serve as end bumpers. Don't forget the skirting board. Because of it, it may not be possible to lean the bed racks against the wall tightly enough.

To fasten the sidewalls to the mattress frames, it is used threaded connection... You can use special screws with a hexagon inside. To final assembly the bed passed as quickly and easily as possible, it is recommended to temporarily fix the props under the sun loungers on the vertical supports. Make sure all props are at the same height.

How to make and install a ladder?

Ladder posts can be made from beams or planks. The beams are made of timber. You can use cuttings for them from unnecessary garden tools... The workpieces are cut into pieces of suitable length, carefully cleaned and ground. When working, you can be guided by the following drawing: Fig. 2. It is recommended to put the rungs on special glue. To do this, in the racks, you must first prepare the holes for the ends of the crossbars. The holes must be exactly opposite each other. After the bed is completely ready with your own hands, it is recommended to additionally strengthen its structure with a strapping. It is best made from planks. At the same time, they will serve as a fence. To prevent the possibility of injury and splinters, you need to carefully polish all parts of a homemade bunk bed made of wood so that its surface becomes perfectly smooth. Finally, the bed is painted or varnished. Finished bed installed in the selected place, must be attached to the wall with self-tapping screws, and only after that it can be used for its intended purpose.

This method is very convenient if a sofa was once bought for one child, and after a while a second one appeared, which also needs to sleep somewhere. In order not to make a bed with your own hands from scratch, you can adapt an existing sofa for this. The second tier should be the same length as the first. The width of the top tier should be slightly less. Usually it is 70-80 cm. Thanks to this difference, the finished bunk bed will not look too bulky. First, you will need to prepare 2 wooden shields. They should be 2 cm wider than the mattress used. Height - 2 cm more than the height of the mattress. Attach these shields to the sides of the mattress using 10mm bolts. Prepare a 50x30 mm rail. The plank will be attached with metal corners and screws. You will need to attach 2 corners to the bottom edge of the mattress edge. Fasten them so that the free shelves are facing down. Take a block and bolt it to the wall. The bar must have the same cross-section as the boundary strip. Prepare the recesses in it for the shelves of the corners in advance.

Attach the uprights to the upper mattress with bolts and place it in place. At the bottom, the racks are bolted to the sides of the sofa. The upper back side of the mattress should be supported by a block. The corner shelves should fit into the grooves of the bar. This will ensure the stability of the mattress position. The uprights are best made from solid hardwood. If the mattress cannot be securely attached to the wall, the same posts will need to be made at the back. Attach the stand to the wall with at least one bolt. Finishing the bed is exactly the same as in the previously described instructions. Happy work!

A bunk bed is needed not only for the younger generation: in a small apartment or compact country house it can solve the problem of adult sleeping places. But there are almost exclusively children's bunk beds on sale, and they are not cheap. Meanwhile, a bunk bed may well be made by hand from available materials by a novice master who has the most about carpentry general idea... All you need is a small workshop in the garage, shed or on the balcony - you still won't be able to build a bed on the floor in the living room. In this article we will see what and how it is possible to craft, if the question arose: where is he (she) to sleep?

You can make a bunk bed for two children, as well as for adults and a child, made of solid wood or MDF, see fig. In the latter case, children's sleeping place located at the top: this makes it easier to ensure the strength of the bed. True, it is also easier for a curious offspring to spy on mom and dad from there, so the option with an adult rookery at the top is also possible, see below.

If the bed is only for children, then often the upper tier is combined with playhouse(pos. 1 on the next figure) or the entire bed with a working corner (pos. 2). Corner bunk beds of the "closed corner" type (pos. 3) are mainly advisable in studio apartments to highlight a children's area, because they practically do not save living space. But as for the sofa or sofa bed with the upper sleeping tier (pos. 4), then the obvious overkill: making the stairs retractable is inconvenient for the child; the ladder is secured in place - how does an adult sit on a sofa? But for now we're going to get to the beds, which are just beds.

Notable designs

Search results for options self-made bunk beds in runet give, I must say, a completely positive result - as for children's beds. The user will find clear instructions, with drawings and material sheets, how to make this very bed. However, looking closely, you can understand that these are not the simplest, cheapest and most reliable options.

For example, in Fig. drawings and assembly diagram of the bed, described in detail on the website "Furniture Circle". It is quite suitable for its intended use. But let's take a closer look at the positions highlighted in red:

To assemble the bed (pad, sunbed, pos. 3), you need to make 12 mortise connections. Not to mention that it is not so easy, the stock frame made of 50x50 timber with so many inserts will not be very strong. If the children of the dear start a pillow fight on the bed, it may break. And it is difficult to fix, tk. the bed is integral to the power circuit of the bed. Therefore, the assembly of the product (pos. 5) is complicated: the beds are made first without platforms (tires), the bed is assembled on bolts, and only then the platforms are mounted. The bolt nuts are tightly closed; loose - you will not tighten. And they can become loose, tk. the beds hang on bolts that create significant concentrated loads on the tree. Conclusion: This bed will only allow its inhabitants to grow to an adult if it is made of high quality (and expensive) hardwood. Structurally and technologically unnecessarily complex.

The option of a bunk children's bed, which can be made of pine or spruce (see the figure on the right), is also described in detail even on several sites. The first thing that catches your eye is the high consumption of materials and labor for marking and sawing parts. The strength of a softwood bunk bed can be made easier, see below.

Secondly, the wood is suitable for this bed, though soft, but of high quality, without knots, twists, slanting, i.e. also not cheap. The reason is the lamellar stock, which is why it was necessary to additionally strengthen the corners, tk. the lamellas in the main power circuit do not work. Knots and other defects in wood, suddenly they appear in load-bearing parts, become centers of concentration (focuses) of loads, and the bed will not last long. A mattress laid on lamellas is, of course, more comfortable, but after all, both doctors and psychologists unequivocally say: it is not good for children to sleep on too soft. The children's bed should be a little harsh. Finally, this bed needs a lot of hardware visible from the outside.

Features of the power circuit

The authors of the above constructions are by no means hack or ignorant. They quite conscientiously approached the solution of the task before them, knowing about the increased requirements for the strength of a bunk bed. Blasting onto the floor from a height of 0.5 or 2 m are completely different things. Surely they also know that a bunk bed can form a very rigid box. Compared with massive construction the box-type holds dynamic loads better, but worse static long-term ones.

But this is exactly what we need for a baby bed! Children, they are light, but angry. A bed for children should hold dynamics better than static ones. This circumstance is often not taken into account by professional furniture designers, unnecessarily strengthening (and increasing the cost) of children's beds. Amateur furniture design programs such as PRO100 also calculate children's beds using algorithms for adults. We will further figure out what can be achieved, taking into account the characteristics of a child, somewhere up to 15-16 years old, as a source of operational loads on the bed.

Note: that's what you definitely don't need to do with a bunk bed, it's to make it half-hanging with the support of the corners on the wall, see fig. on right. Difference between bearing capacity building structures, incl. wooden, and the furniture is so large that from the smallest dynamics either the bed will soon loosen, or the wall will crumble.

Making a bed

If we manage to construct a bed made of wood that can withstand an adult uncle of 85-90 kg of live weight, being suspended from the ceiling on ropes, then such a bed can be either included in any box-type power circuit, or carry the load on its own.

With the sides, it is self-sufficient in relation to both the statics and dynamics of both children and adults and can simply be stacked in a box-shaped frame, the task of which is only to provide general rigidity. Without sides, the frame with a platform and a bottom is either rigidly fixed in a lightweight box, reinforcing it to the required degree, or fits into a pre-reinforced box. In any case, there is no fastener visible from the outside. The platform and the bottom are attached to the frame with 4x self-tapping screws (16 ... 25) with a pitch of 70 ... 150 mm. The corners of the frame and the places where the beams meet the ties must necessarily have hardware; the rest are distributed evenly along the contour. Just in case: a hardware, a hardware product is a threaded fastener.

Note: the bottom of the upper bed of the bunk bed is draped from below with any suitable upholstery fabric before being installed on the frame.

Examples of bed designs

The best way to use this bed in a children's bunk bed is to tear off the sides from it and include them in the power circuit of the box. The frame itself is a flat box, it will withstand the dynamics of children, and small statics will not load it much.

How a children's bunk bed works, in which these principles are implemented, is shown in Fig.:

The frame is assembled on dowels and glue from any available wood, even aspen or poplar. After that, the support frames (parts 7 and 8) and the ladder are installed. The bed is ready, you can put the bed down and sleep. A small drawback of this bed is the need for the sleeper upstairs to climb over the fence (det. 6 in the figure). It is impossible to make the fence cut, it works in the power circuit. But make a recess in the fence above the stairs for half the width of children. 6 you can.

Note: children 3 cannot be removed from the lower section, they also work in the power circuit.

Per grandchildren

Another option for using a box-bed in a children's bunk bed is to leave the sides in it, and remove the headboard with a footboard. The sides will provide the proper resistance of the frame to longitudinal torsion, and it is already resistant to transverse torsion due to its small width.

For greater rigidity, the frame is assembled on carpentry spike-groove joints. An extra screed was added to the frame, which made it possible to reduce the thickness of the frame by half, to 30 mm, and instead of a more expensive timber, use a thirty-plank that was loose along the length. Moreover, the bed turns out to be even excessively rigid, and it became possible to make the bed collapsible without tools. The bed with the backs is connected with steel locks (pos. 10 in the figure); these are sold in furniture stores specifically for this purpose. When the children grow up, the bed can be hidden in the grandchildren's closet or sold on occasion.

Note: the sides are connected to the frame with 30x8 oak dowels with a pitch of 120 ... 150 mm on wood mounting glue. All other joinery connections are also glued.

Or maybe a corner?

As mentioned above, a bunk bed of the "closed corner" layout practically does not save space in the room. In small-sized housing made of corner bunk beds, an "open corner" type bed, combined with a bedside table and a children's utility corner, may be useful. Is it only a tree?

Beds made of MDF or chipboard look, of course, more elegant than simple wooden ones. Especially - bunk (see photo below), the high backs of which are difficult to disguise in the interior. However, MDF and chipboard require special care in work and some special tools (jigsaw, hand-held wood router) - if you scratch the coating, the scratch will remain.

Second, the ratio of the characteristics of the strength of MDF and laminated chipboard in compression, bending, torsion and shear is completely different from that of wood. Therefore, it is impossible to fasten parts made of MDF and chipboard with joinery joints: a spike or a tooth will break from a small load. There should be as few dowels as possible in products made of MDF or chipboard, and only plastic ones.

The dimensions of the apartment do not always allow you to place sleeping places so that there is free space. To clutter up the room with cots is not the best solution... A hand-made bunk bed will help to cope with the problem and save space.

Pros and cons of bunk beds

Purchased products are expensive, moreover, they do not take into account the peculiarities of the premises where they will be installed. Therefore, it makes sense to make a two-tier structure yourself, combine it with a study table or a storage cabinet, provide drawers under the lower tier.

The simplest summer cottage option can be made by anyone home master, in the slightest degree owning the tool and having the skills to work with wood. In a city apartment, such beds are most often installed in a nursery. This allows you to free up space for games and activities.
