Do-it-yourself fence from a metal picket fence (euro picket fence) How to make a fence from a wooden picket fence with your own hands

Just 50 years ago, fences from wooden picket fence could be seen around most country houses. But they were the same vertical structures. Now a reliable and durable picket fence can be built in various configurations and even in combination with other material. Fencing is quite easy to build with the correct calculation and preparation of the material. It will serve as a reliable protection of the site, and decorate it with its appearance.

Advantages

Everyone wants to make their home beautiful, and the fence is the element of the suburban area that people pay attention to in the first place. Therefore, it is important to give this element maximum aesthetics. One of the materials that fall into the category of aesthetic and malleable for unique buildings can be considered wood. If you have skills in working with wood and a desire to independently build a fence around the site, then the question of how to make a picket fence will be solved by itself.

A picket fence installed with your own hands, with some imagination and a little skill, will look great on any terrain and against the backdrop of any building.

Reliability wooden fence depends on the selected type of wood for its manufacture, as well as on the size of one picket fence. If done right choice the fence will last for many years.

News proper care it's not hard for him at all. All that the owner must do is to apply protective substances to the surface in a timely manner. It is also important that the picket fence almost does not obscure the site and has an excellent throughput air. Near it, you can plant any plants that need sunlight.

The main types of styling

Vertical and horizontal

Traditionally, in the manufacture of a wooden fence, pickets are installed vertically. However, horizontal installation is also possible. This design is made of several boards or poles. In another way, this type of fencing is called "ranch". It is well suited for creating a rustic style.

You can even tilt the slats to one side, and then you get an even more unusual fence. And given that the angle of inclination can be different, the options for creating unusual designs do not count.

Checkerboard

Attractive appearance It also has a checkerboard fence. It looks beautiful not only from the outside, but also from the inside. Location feature wooden parts consists in the fact that the shtaketins are installed on both sides, but are displaced in relation to each other. The gap, on the one hand, is closed with a rail on the other, and vice versa.

Material preparation and calculation

A wooden picket fence is so easy to install that you don't even need a lot of tools to install it.

For the manufacture of the fence itself, in addition to wood, you will need:

  • fasteners - nails or screws;
  • hand saw or jigsaw;
  • screwdriver;
  • protective agent to be applied to the surface. These products include water-repellent and antiseptic impregnation, as well as varnish, stain and paint;
  • a shovel for digging a hole under the support pillars;
  • a hammer, if nails were chosen as fasteners;
  • building level so that all elements of the fence are installed evenly.

You can buy wood and make fences from it yourself, or you can buy a fence already ready. In the latter case, you will have to pay more, but there will be less work.

Note! Before making a picket fence, it is important to correctly calculate the wood material. Based on the perimeter of the territory, as well as the width of the shtaketin and the gaps between them, the required amount is calculated wooden elements. For example, if the width of one picket is 4 cm, and the width of the gap is 6 cm, and at the same time it is planned to make a fence 30 m long, then to calculate the amount of 30 m, you need to divide by 10 cm, that is, by the total width of one gap and one picket.

How much shtaketin is needed depends on the design chosen. For example, if the fence will be erected with gaps, then it will need less material than for a deaf structure of the same length.

It is important not to forget to calculate everything in the same unit of measure. It’s easier to express meters in centimeters, and then 3000 will need to be divided by 10. After the calculation, it turns out that such a fence will require 300 pieces of shtaketin. In addition to the material for the manufacture of the fence itself, you will also need bars for the supports. Such poles should be long enough and strong. It must be remembered that they will sink at least half a meter.

Laying a picket fence in a checkerboard pattern

You can install a fence from a picket fence by working in the following order:

  1. Markup. It is necessary to determine where the support pillars will be located. A strong rope stretched around the perimeter can help in this matter. The optimal distance between the supports is 2-3 meters. Given this, it is necessary to make marks on the ground in those places where holes will be dug.
  2. Digging holes. Their diameter should be greater than the diameter of the support column. The calculation of the depth of the pit depends on how much the height of the future fence will be. Most often it exceeds 1 meter.
  3. Installation of pillars in prepared recesses. If they are wooden, you can just get by with applying to the surface protective equipment. It is possible to lay a wooden picket fence and, using metal poles, in this case, it will be necessary to lay a concrete mixture in the recess.
  4. After the supports are installed, you can begin to attach veins or slabs to them - thicker boards that should be parallel to the ground surface, that is, perpendicular to the support pillars. At least two veins are needed. Their number depends on the total height of the building.
  5. The calculation of the distance between them can also vary. It also depends on the height of the mounted fence and on the method of attaching pickets to them. The main thing is not to bring the lower one closer to the ground by less than 25 cm, and the upper one should not be raised too high so that the edges of the nailed pickets rise at least 25 cm above it.
  6. When the installation of the veins is completed, you can proceed to attach the picket fence itself. When installing the very first picket fence, it is better to use a building level so that the entire fence does not turn out to be crooked. If there is no level, you can use a plumb line instead, which is easy to make yourself using a heavy weight and thread. To attach all the other shtaketins, it will be enough just to determine the width of the gap. You can make it equal to the width of the shtaketin and measure the required distance without any problems by applying one of the rails. But you can specially make a rail of the required width, so that you can then use it only to make gaps.
  7. When the slats are nailed along the entire length of the fence, you can be content with the work already done, since, in essence, the classic fence is already ready.

To make a "checkerboard", you will need to go to the other side to install another row of pickets. In order to avoid distortions and inaccuracies, it is necessary to correctly install the first rail. It should be located strictly opposite the gap between two adjacent pickets on the other side. After installing this rail, all that remains is to nail all the others, measuring the length of the gaps using a template.

Secrets of painting

Finished structure painting

Painting a picket fence with your own hands is not difficult, but you still need to be careful about the details. The durability of not only the paint layer, but the entire structure depends on the quality of this work. For quality application coatings need to clean the wood from dirt, and then primed with a substance that can penetrate deep into the structure.

You can apply multiple layers. Before applying the next, you must wait until the previous layer dries. Many manufacturers can assure you that there is no need to prime the surface before painting. But, nevertheless, it is better not to pay attention to this statement, and to conduct a primer. This will have a positive effect on the durability of wood and on the economy of the main coating.

It is also better to paint in several layers. After applying the first layer, it is better to polish after drying with sandpaper. For painting, it is better to use a brush, not a roller, as it will allow you to get to hard-to-reach places. But if there is a desire to speed up the process, you can also take a roller, but only in this case it must be borne in mind that then you still have to paint many places with a brush.

A picket fence is one of the most popular fences among the people. This is due to its strength, durability and reasonable price of building materials. Such fences can be created with your own hands in just a few days. Further in the article, we will talk in detail about the types of these structures and the rules for creating your own picket fence.

Versions

A picket fence is a fence that is made of vertically mounted rails and crossbeams. Reiki can be from the very different material: metal, wood, plastic, polymer composite, polyvinyl chloride, etc.

In addition, the slats do not have to be vertical - some craftsmen make elegant fences with a semicircular, horizontal or crossed picket fence.

Important! When constructing a fence made of wood, self-tapping screws for fastening shtaketin must be moistened in drying oil. This will extend the life of the fence.

Make a fence layout different ways best when working with wooden material, since it is easier to correct in relation to length and width. This is especially true for those people who want to build a fence with their own hands for the first time and at the same time want to dream up with possible options layouts.

The most popular options remain:

There are a lot of execution options, but translating some of them into reality (without experience in building fences) remains an almost impossible task. The simplest option: order an elegant picket fence from the master (you can come up with a drawing yourself), and then simply install it in a vertical form.

from wood

The most popular type of private fencing summer cottages. Wood remains one of the most affordable and environmentally friendly building materials. To install a fence from it, you do not need exotic tools and special skills or knowledge.

Moreover, professional craftsmen can build you a unique decorative fence from a wooden picket fence, which will be much more difficult to create from another material.

metal

In this case, the rails are made of special metal alloys, which are coated with a polymer coating. They have different lengths, depending on the needs of the buyer (180 cm, 230 cm, 260 cm, etc.).

Unlike corrugated board, a metal picket fence leaves gaps between which sunlight can enter your site. The tops of metal rails can be made in the form of W, such a design is a kind of protection against intruders.

Made of plastic

Plastic-based picket fence is gaining more and more popularity in recent years. In most cases, this is due to the low cost of the material and the wide choice various designs on the market.

The plastic fence has a profile hollow design, which is why it is quite fragile, especially when exposed to negative temperatures and ultraviolet (the source of the latter is the sun's rays).

But science does not stand still, and today you can buy quite strong and flexible plastic, and a fence made of it will be as durable as that of metal. For example, polyvinyl chloride is a strong, flexible type of plastic that can withstand high mechanical loads.

Recently, picket fence made of wood-polymer composite (WPC) has become more and more popular. WPC fences are able to withstand frosts down to -60 °C and heat up to 100 °C. WPC does not fade in the sun and does not contain harmful additives, so it is increasingly used as source material for making fences.

Did you know? The longest fence in the world is located in the southeast of Australia. Its length is 5614 km. It was built in late XIX centuries to protect sheep from wild dingoes hunting them.

Installation and installation of fencing

Installing a picket fence is not the most difficult task, but it still has its own nuances and rules. Next, we will talk about this in detail.

Necessary tools and materials

To make a wooden fence, we need:

  • wooden posts that will be used to install supports;
  • timber - 40 * 40, about 200-250 cm long;
  • pickets prepared for installation;
  • stakes and cord for marking the site;
  • concrete and crushed stone for the installation of supports;
  • bituminous mastic, roofing material and antiseptic (for waterproofing supports);
  • manual or electric drill, tape measure;
  • wheelbarrow;
  • concrete mixer (if you are going to buy ready-made concrete, you will not need it);
  • tamper;
  • bayonet and shovel;

Important! When buying finished wood material, pay attention to its smell. Raw material with a “scent” of mold indicates that rotting processes have begun in the wood.

If you are going to construct a fence from a metal picket fence, you need to get the following materials and devices:

  • welding machine;
  • screwdriver or electric drill;
  • rivets or screws;
  • level;
  • Bulgarian;
  • prepared metal pickets.

In addition, you will need supports, concrete, a drill and other accessories for constructing a fence frame. We have described all this in the list for a wooden fence.

If you are going to enclose your site with a plastic fence, it is best to immediately purchase ready-made fences, the whole point of installing which is to install supports and attach ready-made plastic sections to them. These sections have already been built (plastic pickets are attached to the crossbar).
You can buy the whole structure unassembled, but then you will have to fix the pickets yourself, using rivets or glue. The tools required for installation are the same as in the previous cases.

Installation of supports

The durability and reliability of the fence will depend on the quality of the installation of the support posts. Supports can be hammered deep into the ground with a sledgehammer, can be concreted, but best of all - installed in a concrete-filled parapet.

The last installation option has several advantages at once:

  • the construction of the fence will be more stable and reliable;
  • the fence will not come into contact with soil moisture, which will significantly extend its service life;
  • water from neutral territory will not be able to freely enter your site.

The distance between the installed supports should be within 2-3 meters. You need to deepen the pillars by 1-1.5 meters, although this is not strict rule. Experts note that the support must be buried in the ground by at least 1/4 of its length.

Video: how to install a support post

Wooden supports must be treated with an antiseptic and bituminous mastic. These substances significantly prolong the life of the posts, because an untreated tree can completely rot in 10 years (the period also depends on the type of wood).

In addition, the supports can be wrapped in roofing material, which prevents excessive moisture from entering the wood.

Metal poles can be concreted without pre-treatment, however, like plastic ones. The last two materials will not be significantly affected by contact with concrete or soil in the next few decades.

Important! When installing plastic or metal supports, be sure to put a protective cap on the top that will not allow water to enter the post.

During installation, be sure to control the ideal verticality of the supports relative to ground level. It is recommended to install the crossbeams 5-7 days after the installation of the supports (if the concreting method was used).
In case you just drove the posts deep into the ground (without concrete pouring), the cross bars can be installed on the same day.

Each span should contain two crossbeams, which are attached parallel to each other and perpendicular to the main supports. Metal cross-sections are fastened with anchors or a welding machine.

The second option is only suitable for those who have knowledge of welding metal structures. After the final fixing, the cross-sections are covered with primer (to protect the metal from corrosion).

If you install wooden beams, they must first be coated with an antiseptic, and then painted in any color you like. You can also fix wooden cross-sections with anchors.

However, if your fence is small, having only decorative value (that is, it will not be subjected to serious stress), the crossbars can be fixed with a few screws or nails.
Plastic crossbars are fastened with rivets or special glue. However, in the vast majority of cases, for plastic fences on a support, there is special mount where the cross sections should be placed.

Just a few words about the fence made of plastic picket fence:

  • if you purchased a fence on which the pickets need to be attached yourself, then special connecting elements (and instructions for use) should be included in the kit;
  • in most cases, plastic pickets are attached to glue or rivets;
  • it is best to buy ready-made fences, which are installed in just two steps (digging in support pillars and inserting sections into connecting mechanisms).

Attaching the fence to the crossbar is very simple, you just need to remember important rule: the distance between adjacent rails must be the same. To control this distance, it is necessary to prepare a template, which can be wooden blocks, Matchbox or level (with which you control the evenness of surfaces). It all depends on how tightly you want to arrange the pickets relative to each other.

As for the connecting elements: for metal pickets, you can use special metal screws or rivets, for wood - nails or self-tapping screws. It is only important to choose optimal length connecting elements (so that they do not completely penetrate the diameters).

Each fence must be fixed with two connecting elements on top and two on the bottom. At the end of the work, the heads of nails, self-tapping screws or rivets should be painted together with the picket fence.

Secrets of Longevity

The durability of a plastic picket fence will directly depend on the quality of the material. We advise you to buy durable composites, for example, wood-polymer.
Such material can withstand both moderate mechanical loads and extreme weather conditions.

If you do not throw stones at such a fence, it will stand on your site unchanged for decades. To on for a long time to protect wooden and metal fences, it is necessary to regularly treat them with protective coatings: varnish, primer, stain, etc.

Did you know? Polyvinyl chloride, on the basis of which they are made plastic fences, also used to create artificial leather, window profiles and airbags in cars.

It is advisable to paint the fence every 2-3 years, such procedures will protect the metal from oxidation, and the wood from decay. If you are the owner metal fence, then only the supports and cross-sections should be painted, since the pickets themselves are already covered with a special protective coating.

Benefits of picket fences

The advantages of these types of fences include:

  1. Ease of installation. Even a beginner can build a fence; for this, it is only necessary to be guided by the rules that are described in detail in this article.
  2. Ease of maintenance. Metal and plastic fences only need to be cleaned of dirt and dust, while wooden ones need to be covered with protective varnish or paint every 1-2 years.
  3. metal and plastic products protected by a special polymer layer that prevents corrosion and various biological damage.
  4. You can create a design that will let sunlight into your site.
  5. The cost of picket fences is moderate, especially when compared with concrete or stone fences.
  6. You can build a very beautiful decorative fence from wood - you just need to use your imagination and attract an experienced specialist who will turn your idea into reality.

Disadvantages of picket fences

Among the disadvantages of this type of fences are the following:

  1. Compared to corrugated fences, fences are more labor-intensive to install.
  2. A tree can lose its decorative beauty after 10 years (crack, split, etc.). This can happen even with proper care, because a lot depends on the type of wood and the climatic conditions of a particular region.
  3. A picket fence is fragile and can break under the weight of a person who tries to climb over it.

Now you know what picket fences are and how to properly install them on your site. Play with your imagination, connect your imagination and skills, and you will definitely succeed.

Not one territory can do without the presence of a fence. These are not necessarily high and impregnable walls. Metal bollards around a supermarket parking lot or hedge from the bushes in the park - these are also artificially created obstacles, the task of which is not only to outline the boundaries of the site, but also to separate the zones of use.

The most versatile and affordable of these fences over the centuries have been wood products. Not only availability, but also ease of processing, durability, environmental friendliness have made wood an indispensable material in any construction. Nowadays, any man can build a fence from a wooden picket fence with his own hands, having at his disposal a minimum of tools.

All wooden fences are divided into deaf and translucent. It is the translucent structures that are called the wooden picket fence. There are many varieties of them. According to the main differences, a wooden picket fence can be divided into the following types:

1. According to the location of the rails

  • Unilateral
  • bilateral

2. By type of styling

  • Horizontal
  • vertical

3. Laying the picket fence

  • Palisade
  • Convex (one-sided and two-sided)
  • Concave (one-sided and two-sided)
  • cat ears
  • Peak

These are only the most popular types of installation, in practice you can also find barriers with mixed methods of stuffing elements, and with the use of additional decorations in the form of diamonds, carved inserts, combinations with other materials, etc.

Material calculation and tool preparation

The acquisition of all materials requires careful calculation. After all, there will simply be nowhere to put the surplus, and the money will already be spent on them. The shortage will entail the need for additional trips to hardware stores and the selection of wood that is similar in texture, species and quality of sawn wood. Moreover, it will be very problematic to buy this material in compliance with all the listed parameters.

1. So, the first thing to decide is the height of the fence. The frequency of the installed poles will directly depend on it. After all, the heavier the sections, the more often you need to put poles. Usually, they are installed every 2-3 meters to a depth of 1 meter. Based on these parameters, you can calculate how much material is needed for the supports.

2. A wooden fence for a fence includes the fence itself and the bars (another name for them are slabs or veins) to which it will be attached. It is necessary to take into account when calculating:

  • A picket fence will be mounted on one or both sides
  • How wide will the boards be and at what intervals will they be installed
  • The length and number of veins that will be attached to the poles

The size of a wooden picket fence for a fence can be from 3 to 25 cm in width, up to 2 meters in height. The legs, ideally, should have a length that is a multiple of the distance between the posts so that their joints fall just on the body of the support.

3. From necessary tool will need:

  • Tools for digging holes (shovels or hole drill)
  • Tools for screwing screws (screwdriver or screwdriver)
  • Equipment for sawing wood and cutting metal (hacksaw, grinder with different discs and nozzles, electric jigsaw)
  • Devices for mixing concrete (concrete mixer or chopper with a trough)
  • Tanks for transferring slag, stones, water and mortar
  • Brushes, trays, rags for painting
  • Level, thread, marker

Material selection and preparation

wood species

Having picked up a suitable type of laying of elements of the future design, you need to start acquiring the material. There are many types of wood. Each region has its own breeds that are more or less affordable both in terms of availability and in terms of price. There are elite types of wood that have a high cost, regardless of the place of purchase, but they can also be used to build a fence. It should be noted that, in addition to the price, the density of wood should be taken into account.

Not every expensive brand will necessarily last for outdoor use. Therefore, if the means allow, it is better to purchase oak. The most classic and most acceptable will be the choice of one of the conifers. Such wood, due to the content of resin in its structure, will not rot for a long time, and the price, for example, for a pine board, is almost everywhere at the lowest rates. For the support material, in addition to wood, metal or concrete is suitable.

Preliminary processing

The fence consists of posts and intermediate sections. Preparatory work include:

Rack processing

In the described design, the supports can be used both from wood, metal or concrete. The latter do not require any special preparation before use. Wooden racks need to be oiled, and the part that will be buried or concreted and the upper end should be covered with bitumen mastic. Metal bearing elements should always be coated with a minimum of primer, and best of all, also painted. The butt, which will be facing the sky, should be welded with an iron plate, cleaned and also coated with anti-corrosion materials.

Flight preparation

All planks and bars that will be components hinged structures, need to:

  1. plan
  2. File the tops
  3. Soak with antiseptic and coat with a primer

Installing a wooden picket fence

Installation of support poles

As with any other fence, the first thing to do is to install the bearing supports. Here you should take into account the factor of uneven terrain. If the owner of the future fence has a desire to build according to the level of the top line, then you need to think about how to close the uncovered gap from the bottom of the picket fence. This can be a foundation or longer boards of the picket fence itself. It should only be taken into account that the boards can be increased by no more than 25 cm. For larger indicators, more frequent installation of poles and additional veins will be required.

All these components will require significant costs. Therefore, with large height differences in the trajectory of the future structure, it is preferable to install in the form of steps. That is, each subsequent span will be higher or lower than the previous one. So, to install the support:

  1. A hole is pulled out, 1 m deep
  2. A pole is installed in it, leveled in level in all directions
  3. The pit is filled with large stones so that they do not disturb the dislocation of the support
  4. The pit is filled with concrete or mortar (depending on the size of the rubble material)
  5. From installed post the guide thread is pulled and the next support is set at the desired distance

lag mount

The next step is the fastening of the transverse jumpers. They, as mentioned earlier, should be attached directly to the poles. If this is not possible due to a mismatch in the dimensions of the veins, then the joints of their upper and lower rows must be separated into different spans. Docking occurs by making L-shaped cutouts on each of the fastened ends and their subsequent alignment and fastening with self-tapping screws.

Take a look at the range of brackets on construction market for fences. Above, you can see an example of attaching a log to poles using special brackets. Thus, it is possible to reduce the installation time of the fence and achieve an aesthetic appearance.

Another simpler, but less aesthetic option would be to screw on the top and bottom of the junction of the bars. Using concrete pillars for the eurofence, the veins are simply placed in the grooves, and to breed them, the space can be placed in the groove between them with a beam 40x40 mm thick and a length equal to the required distance between the slings.

Wooden picket fence

A wooden picket fence is attached to the fence with nails (depending on the material of the log), or better, self-tapping screws at a distance of at least 15 cm from each other. An exception may be a checkerboard wooden fence, where the vertical elements of the fence are mounted in a checkerboard pattern on both sides of the transverse beam.

In this case, the distance between the fence on each side will be equal to the size of the elements placed on the opposite side, or as indicated in the schematic picture below.

In case the veins were attached to the pillars with outer side, it makes sense to calculate the installation of the fence in such a way that one of its elements overlaps the junction of the crossbars. Additional self-tapping screws screwed through one board, but into different veins, will make the structure stronger.

Painting a wooden fence

After the installation of all components of the structure, you can start painting. As already mentioned, the priming of all elements should have been done just before the assembly of the fence, since the contact point of the transverse bars and vertical boards cannot be covered with paint, and the constant moisture that will accumulate there can quickly render the wood at the joints unusable. Almost always, improper painting of the picket fence is the main cause of loosening of these types of fences.

You can use for painting both special paints for wood, and universal enamels, and nitro paints. It is beautiful when the tree is varnished, but here it is worth considering that for a permanent presentable state of the barrier, it will have to be completely cleaned of the old coating and applied with a new one every two or three years.

Photo of beautiful wooden picket fences

Below you can see the photo beautiful fences from a wooden fence. Please note that every master and owner of the house tries to make his fence unique and inimitable, using various techniques picket fence styling and color combinations

  1. The picket fence should not be fixed below 15–20 cm from the ground. Splashes of dirt and water during rain will accelerate the deterioration of wood, but the most dangerous thing is snowdrifts. Since it has not only a corrosive, but also a physical effect on any fence. The question arises of what to do with such a gap through which there will be a constant migration of animals in both directions. One option would be fastening with brackets, a strip of galvanized mesh with a mesh size of 50x50 mm. The anti-corrosion coating of this material will allow it to last for many years, and grey colour will make it invisible against the general background of the fence structure. Possible distortions caused by vegetation and snowdrifts can be easily corrected without the help of any tools.
  2. No matter how well the ends of the entire structure are processed, it is still more reliable protection for them, the presence of a metal profile ridge can serve. It can be ordered from companies that manufacture such products. Such an element will not only create additional protection for the entire structure, but also significantly decorate it, if you approach the choice of shape and color creatively.
  3. If a wooden fence stands close to a highway, then for its safety it is worth planting a continuous strip of low shrubs in front of it, which will take on spray from passing vehicles.

If all stages of the construction of a wooden picket fence are approached responsibly, all work is carried out efficiently and safely, then the result will be useful and pleasing to the eye for decades

A fence for giving from a metal picket fence fits best into the image of a corner for relaxation. Simple and unpretentious in form, it is very suitable for fencing the site, and for the front of the house. This sample of a metal fence is still relatively uncommon on the market. But for the construction of the euro picket fence (metal picket fence), there are already several options for arranging fences with excellent design and interesting implementation.

Beautiful hedge of a private house

Usage metal elements as the basis of the fence, supporting pillars or piles for fencing household plots and cottages has long been known. But here is a metal picket fence as the main material of spans - the idea is relatively new and quite interesting.
The picket fence is a shaped metal strip with stiffeners, holes for fastening.

Fencing with brick pillars

The dimensions of these bands may vary slightly depending on the specifications manufacturer. The basis of production is rolled galvanized steel or profiled sheet with a thickness of 0.8 to 2 mm.

The length of the slats, depending on the purpose of the fence, can be from 0.25 to 2 meters.

In the assortment of manufacturers there are the following varieties:

  • unpainted galvanized material;
  • painted monochromatic appearance of the panels;
  • types of picket fence under a tree;
  • shaped types;
  • anti-vandal types of material.

And this is just one of the varieties.

Variants and their forms

Fences made of metal picket fence or euro picket fence are just one of the types of fences. In fact, the types of metal picket fence include:

  • made of profiled galvanized steel;
  • pieces of structural reinforcement, square, circle or strip up to 25 mm wide;
  • slats from profile pipe different section;
  • coated.

Each of the presented types of material has its own characteristics both in terms of installation and in the form of the profile of the plates, the shape of the upper part, and the method of fastening.

According to the shape of the strips made of sheet steel, the most popular type of material among summer residents, they are:

  • semicircular shape;
  • U-shaped;
  • M-shaped;
  • rectangular shape;
  • strips with rolling ends;
  • classic.

decorative hedge option

For those who decide to make a picket fence with their own hands, the following points will be important:

  1. On the websites of large manufacturers for a picket fence, a calculator will allow you to calculate all necessary elements structures including fasteners.
  2. The consultant will assist in finding the necessary information and tell you how to calculate individual nodes and elements.
  3. How to choose the right project, choose the material and how to do the basic operations, photos of the most successful fences with a metal picket fence will tell you.

Coloring methods

A fence made of unpainted metal plates is much cheaper than those with polymer-coated plates.

Unpainted elements are painted:

  • paint brush by hand;
  • using a compressor or atomizer.

Painting is done in two or three stages: the first is a primer, the second is enamel painting, the third is varnishing.

Possible variety of colors and patterns

Types of such fences

Among possible types classifications of fences worth highlighting:

  • according to the method of mounting the frame, supporting pillars and slats;
  • by type of base and supporting pillars;
  • by the type of filling sections between the columns.

Mounting methods

Installation of a fence made of a metal picket fence has several ways of attaching the slats to the frame of the fence. In one case, the technology provides for mounting on transverse strips, how it is attached. In another case, you can mount a metal picket fence on the frame in special seats.

Vertical checkerboard

A metal fence for a house with a sparse arrangement of plates is installed on a slatted base of two slats - upper and lower. This installation option is universal, it can also be used under the fence "", when the plates are installed in a checkerboard pattern.

Dimensions and distances

The design elements are taken into account:

  • the total size of the building - length,;
  • the size of functional elements, such as a gate, metal picket gates: their width and height, number of leaves and opening method;
  • supports, their size and method of installation.

As a result of the calculation, the initial information is obtained for introduction into the online calculator:

  • number of barrier sections;
  • the number of transverse jumpers and their dimensions;
  • section size: height and width, distance between planks in the section.

Multicolored variant

When calculating how to make a metal fence and how much material it will take, you can take the standard version as a basis, the scheme of which provides for:

  • span width - 2.5-3 meters;
  • height - 2 meters;
  • the number of transverse logs per section 40x20 mm - 2 pieces;
  • support from a pipe 60x60 mm, 3.2-3.4 meters high;
  • the number of units of material 100 mm wide with a sparse version with a gap of 80 mm with double-sided fastening - 12 pieces per 1 linear meter.

The fence goes well with brick pillars.

Infill types

The calculation will be incomplete without the fact that the options for filling spans can make their own adjustments to the final calculation. Fill types include:

  • direct single barrier;
  • double-sided installation option;
  • installation at an angle;
  • installation at an angle bilateral;
  • installation of the type of blinds made of metal material;
  • single installation with back wall from a profiled sheet (used mainly for gates);
  • non-standard scheme with a change in the angle of inclination.

  1. Installation sites are marked

    Installation work

    span set

    A set of spans begins with marking using the level of the mounting points of the plates.

    The first plates are installed from the edges of the span at the same distance from. The distance between them is divided by the number of planks and the equal spans between them.

    Another mounting option

    The installation of each element is carried out after checking the distance at the top and lower parts between plates. The dual option is installed first with outside, and then from the inside. For more information about the set of spans, see the video.

Ecological natural material considered the best for building and home improvement. First of all, it is in harmony with the nature of the person himself, and also it is easy to operate and easy to construct.

It's about wooden picket fence, which, along with modern fences and fences, does not lose its relevance and novelty. And, what is also important, it is quite possible to make a fence from a wooden picket fence with your own hands, at your own discretion.

Traditional fence: pros and cons

Fence owners have already appreciated all the pros and cons of fencing. The score points on the account of the fencers are:

  • low cost of consumable material;
  • in principle, a simple installation, which, perhaps, can be complicated by personal preferences in design and decor;
  • the beauty of the structure as a whole, which will give the owner's site originality;
  • a wide range of wiring diagrams.

There will be minuses, especially for those who don't like extra hassle:

  • Wood is very short-lived, requiring constant care.
  • The service life of a tree varies from 5 to 10 years and depends on many factors: climatic conditions, location and soil on which it is installed.

  • In order for such a fence to please you for more than one year, it is necessary to paint it annually, and, if necessary, fragmentary repairs.
  • It should also be borne in mind that a wooden picket fence is not a big metal fence for you, so it is unlikely to protect against intruders.
  • Wood is a highly flammable material and can be easily damaged mechanically.

We choose the material - get to work

Among the existing types of wood most suitable for construction wooden fences ash, mulberry, acacia, oak, aspen, Siberian larch are considered.

Details of the future building can be purchased at ready-made- having bought a picket fence on the market, or you can make it yourself from boards.

But in one case or another readiness of wood must be taken into account, because the raw normally not processed subsequently deforms, and the absence of any defects, knots and cuts.

Before installation, all parts of the fence must be treated with an antiseptic to extend the life of the product as a whole.

The next step should be choice of fence mounting method and his appearance. How to lay the picket fence: horizontally, vertically or with a ladder, a lattice, in a checkerboard pattern - the choice is up to the owner.

  1. classic fence.
  2. Familiar to us since childhood: vertical poles and longitudinal logs, on which boards are attached with a small gap between them.

  3. Ladder.
  4. Very original way fastening the same vertical boards to the logs, only with an overlap (slate). Very good option, because with him the fence looks equally beautiful both outside and inside.

  5. Lattice.
  6. This sectional fence, where each part must be made separately, and then attached to the main supporting mount.

    The section is a downed square wooden frame, on which boards are subsequently attached perpendicularly in two directions (a schematic prototype of a conventional chain-link mesh pattern).

  7. Chess.
  8. It is an analogy to the classic fence, only in a bilateral manner. A number of front boards, and towards him the gaps of the gaps are closed by a number of purl boards.

  9. Vertical.
  10. Back at the core classical scheme. Wide longitudinal logs are stuffed between the bearing pillars. One significant nuance of such a fence is that it cannot be called a fence due to the low height of the building, it is rather exquisite decor for flower beds and rose gardens.

Your own master

In the working notebook, the master himself must first of all be reflected - length and planned height future fence. It should be decided whether the fence will have a monolithic base, or a small gap between the ground and the fence.

Bringing beauty and finishing touches

There are many ways to make your fence beautiful and original.

The simplest way is painting the fence in two or three colors, highlighting sections of the triangular top, for example, as shown in the photo.

However, you can work a little, in pursuit of beauty:

  • First of all, it can be an external decor. Additional slats with a certain pattern stuffed on the main picket fences.
  • A more difficult decor method to perform at home. When each board is pre-cut at a certain angle, during assembly, forming a wavy or figured relief.
  • A variety of removable parts are also acceptable, attached in turn to the tops of the fence.
  • Can also be used uneven height method, attaching picket fences to the logs in waves or with a certain slope.

A fence made of wooden picket fence will certainly decorate any suburban or suburban area. First of all, he will an element of personal pride of the owner, as it will be made by hand and original.
