Chest of drawers restoration technique in various ways. We decorate the dresser with our own hands Drawing on the dresser with our own hands

Updating furniture is a common practice that does not require significant investments and allows you to implement creative author's ideas. This also applies to dressers - perhaps the most functional furniture. The décor of the chest of drawers should match the interior of the living room in which it is located. If you need to accentuate a restrained pastel decor, a revamped print and vase-topped chest of drawers is a good solution. It's another matter if you need to create the perfect combination of color palette. A properly decorated old chest of drawers will cope with any task.

Buying new furniture is not cheap. And the models sold in the post-Soviet space are not always distinguished by originality. Therefore, a master class on upgrading an old chest of drawers will come in handy for those who want to save money, as well as for people with an artistic mindset who gravitate towards everything original. So how to decorate a dresser with your own hands?

We update the old chest of drawers

Whether it is the restoration of the chest of drawers or the decor of the bedside table with your own hands - everything is done in stages. The first thing you need before starting work is the tools. Here is a list of what you need:

  • small sander;
  • sandpaper or sanding sponge;
  • stencils;
  • putty knife;
  • unnecessary toothbrush;
  • screwdriver;
  • a knife for wood;
  • several brushes, different in width and composition of the pile (hard and soft), sponges;
  • masking tape;
  • acetone;
  • industrial film;
  • toothpicks.

Materials needed:

  • voluminous paste or acrylic-based putty;
  • glue for wooden surfaces;
  • wood varnish, stain or primer with paint of a certain color (for decoupage - three-layer napkins).

You will also need gloves and a respirator.

If it's an artistic idea, acrylic paint in the right color will do. For those wishing to modernize the old chest of drawers, replacing furniture fittings would be a good option: you can add new handles or mirror panels.

Restoration

But for those who are not afraid of working with sandpaper, a spatula and acrylic paint, a stage-by-stage restoration of the chest of drawers has been prepared. The process consists of several steps: removing the old paint or varnish coating, thorough sanding, checking for chips and other irregularities, local filling of defects, painting and final decoration of the chest of drawers.

But first you should look for defects in the insides of the dresser. Any broken bottoms, shelves and guides should be unscrewed with a screwdriver and measured. In accordance with the geometric parameters, you can buy new elements or make them yourself. If the second option is closer to you, be prepared to acquire an additional arsenal of tools and knowledge in the field of thorough furniture repair. Be sure to check this before decorating your dresser with your own hands.

Also notice the screws, handles and feet. If the fittings are not the same, with differences in shape and pattern, then, most likely, these elements are made by hand, and if some of them are damaged, the analogue part can no longer be reached. In this case, it is better to replace all the fittings.

Cleaning and preparing the product

Cleaning the surface is done carefully so as not to damage the important decorative elements of the product. First clean the surface by wiping it with soapy water. Use a toothbrush to remove dirt and dust from hard-to-reach areas.

To remove paint or varnish from furniture surfaces, you will need industrial film and acetone. Cover the old chest of drawers with the latter, and to enhance the effect, cover the product with industrial film. In the absence of a film, you can use oilcloth, cellophane and other materials at hand. Limit air intake and let the furniture sit for one hour. After this time, the layer of varnish and paint will lag behind the wood.

Do-it-yourself dresser decor begins with work with a construction trowel. Remove the loose layer from the wood without damaging the surface. Remember to remove all paint.

This is followed by the skinning stage.

The surface, free from small decorative elements, is sanded with a machine. For the latter, it is important to choose the right attachment. Sand the area of protruding parts and small parts with emery paper or using a sanding sponge. Do not overdo it on sanding, so as not to damage the chest of drawers.

Cracks, chips, scratches and other defects are carefully covered with wood putty. Better to give preference to a water-based putty. For restoration, the filler is selected according to the color, not the name of the wood. It should only go into the grooves, so grind the surface again. If traces remain in the structure of the tree, stains will appear when tinted with stain that cannot be removed. Replace the bottoms in boxes, runners and reinforce the frame.

Painting

The choice of paint, its brand and color depends on how you see the future decor of the old chest of drawers. This can be a layer of stain if the structure of the wood is smoothly embossed and looks good without paint. The stain is suitable for changing the color while preserving the texture of the wood. You can cover the entire surface with acrylic paint, and then the design of the old chest of drawers will be completely different.

Both stain and paint are applied evenly with a brush or roller. The work is the same in terms of time: only the results on the fact of drying are different.

Stages of work:

  • The choice of varnish, paint of the desired color and other materials.
  • Toning, staining or painting with a brush, roller. You can use a rag.
  • A layer of varnish on the entire surface of the furniture. After drying, another layer or two. Can be replaced with a transparent primer.
  • Sanding to remove the raised pile of the array.
  • Finishing layers of varnish.
  • Wait until it dries completely.

Design solutions

The decor of an old bedside table or decorating a chest of drawers with your own hands is determined by the style of the interior. You can use wallpaper, lace, choose a floral print, fabric upholstery of boxes, paints, or put names, memorable dates on the surface. You can decorate the entire front panel with coffee beans, buttons, beads, beads and more. If this is a living room, it is better to use presentable discreet color panels, but for a bedroom or nursery, you are given complete freedom of choice. Decoupage technique, English style, volumetric decor, as well as antique decor do not go out of fashion.

Bedside tables are updated in the same way. But here's how to decorate a plastic chest of drawers? Decoupage is the best choice. The same work is carried out as indicated above, with the exception of grinding. For plastic, special paints of various colors and primers are provided.

Decoupage

How to decorate a chest of drawers using decoupage technique? This is a real freedom for imagination. Decoupage involves decorating furniture with special cards and three-layer napkins. You also need to get white acrylic paint, PVA glue, scissors, a roller and a sponge. The process begins by applying paint with a roller to the entire surface of the chest of drawers. Next, start cutting out the images you want. To give an antique look, after complete drying, you should go over the product with sandpaper. This must be done carefully, along the lines of the wood.

Apply PVA glue to all parts to glue them to the dresser. With the same glue, grease the front side of the pictures, which will protect them from external influences. If these are flowers or ornate patterns, they can be extended with patterns of lines and curls protruding onto the surface of the nightstand.

Decoupage can also be done with fabric. This will allow you to decorate the facade to match the interior.

In english style

But do-it-yourself dresser design is not limited to the idea of decoupage. An old product is ideal for an English style, even if it has noticeable defects. You will need four colors: white, red, blue, and brown. The first three are acrylic paint, the last one is oil paint. From materials, putty, putty knife, top-glaze, masking tape, sandpaper, decorative nails, brushes and rollers are also useful.

The fittings are removed from the chest of drawers, and the product is cleaned. After that, the surface is covered with an uneven layer of putty: the more carelessly, the better. Cover the dresser with white paint and tape the areas to paint. Dilute the scarlet and blue paints. The spotting that may appear during the staining process is only a plus. The table top and sides are sanded. The finished work is covered with top-glaze (use a sponge for this). The ideal tone of the topplazer is “nut”. Then hammer in decorative furniture nails and install the hardware, darkened with oil brown paint.

Antique

But how to decorate a dresser with your own hands if it is too old-fashioned? Country and Provence lovers will appreciate the antique décor. Such a design is now popular, and to work you will need the following:

  • sandpaper of various grit and hardness;
  • sponge;
  • brushes and screwdrivers;
  • craquelure varnish;
  • wax candle;
  • 2 colors of acrylic paint.

Remove the hardware, drawers, and dresser countertops. Sand the entire surface and wipe with a wet sponge. Apply the first coat of paint and leave to dry. The following scuffs will be intentional, and they are carried out with sandpaper and a candle. Then apply paint of a different shade (to your taste) and wipe with a sponge those areas that were covered with wax: in these places the paint will be erased. The finishing stage is decoupage technique or author's painting. Further, everything is covered with craquelure.

Storage space is a necessary element of any room. Although there are hundreds of modern and compact solutions now, we always go back to the traditional option: a dresser that never goes out of style. Still looking for the perfect dresser for your home?

To make a designer dresser decor with your own hands means to make an expensive designer thing out of a simple, ordinary dresser. Few can afford to buy designer things - they are not cheap. Surrounding yourself with beautiful things that make you feel good and comfortable is in our power - you just really want to. To create a special mood in the house, to make the atmosphere unique - it's all in our hands. If you are a beginner decorator, you can first make a bedside table decor with your own hands. We offer 2 master classes: on the decor of the chest of drawers, and on the volumetric decor of wooden parts with putty.

Decor of a chest of drawers in the English style (master class)

The decor of an old chest of drawers from an ikeevsky store is our task for one or two evenings. The decoration will be done using acrylic paint, red and blue pigments, with which we achieve the desired color when mixing these components. In addition, we need a putty in order to make the surface textured. Then you will need oil paint and top-glaze. Toplazure is a decorative coating with natural wax that will preserve the unique color of the wood.

For work you will need:

  1. White acrylic water-based paint.
  2. Finished finishing putty.
  3. Red and blue pigments.
  4. Walnut colored top-glaze.
  5. Brown oil paint.
  6. Decorative furniture nails.
  7. Putty knife.
  8. Masking tape.
  9. Roller and brush.
  10. Sandpaper.
  11. Its a wooden chest of drawers.

Getting Started

Before decorating, it is necessary to remove all handles from the chest of drawers and wipe it from dust with a damp cloth.

Next, we take a spatula and spread a thin layer of white putty on the facades of all our drawers, that is, on the visible part of the chest of drawers. It is not necessary to adhere to a uniform filling of the surface, the board should be textured, and not simple. Smear the putty spots on the board. We are waiting for the putty to dry, and we pass with a roller with white acrylic paint, with a semi-dry brush, along the top of the boxes. We glue the masking tape and separate the places, which we will paint over in blue and red.

We take 2 glass jars and make the colors we need. Add blue and red pigments to the white acrylic paint. The more pigment, the darker the paint will be.

When staining, we see some spotting - it should be so. We need an unevenly colored surface.

We paint again, otherwise the color will be too pale. This is how it should turn out.

Then we take sandpaper, sand the top of the chest of drawers, side edges, and corners.

Then we take a sponge, and begin to rub on the entire surface of the chest of drawers, with the exception of the drawers, walnut-colored toplazer. Especially intensively we process the side parts, the corners of the facade, and the top of the chest of drawers. Next, we begin to stuff furniture nails along the facade of our chest of drawers. We make sure that the distance between the nails is the same.

Then we fasten the handles that we removed at the beginning of work, or others that match the style. We paint with a brush and oil paint around the nails and pens - we make a dark shade. We are finishing the work.

People often throw away old furniture, not because it is broken, but because old bedside tables, sideboards, or dressers are tired and no longer look beautiful. Often you see discarded furniture made of good wood, not modern chipboard and fiberboard. Old furniture undoubtedly deserves to be given a second chance, because it is a value that, in the right hands, turns into a stylish designer item. Yes, of course, you will have to put your hands and diligence, but such decor does not require large material costs, and the work will certainly delight you.

With the help of such a voluminous decor, you can make a do-it-yourself cabinet decor. You can decorate not only a chest of drawers or a bedside table with a volumetric decoration, but also make a cupboard decor with your own hands. Next, you will see stencils that can be useful to you in your work.

For work you will need:

  1. Wooden detail of a bedside table or chest.
  2. Putty knife.
  3. The stencil is plastic or made of thick cardboard.
  4. Acrylic filler or bulk paste.
  5. White and brown acrylic paint.
  6. Brush or sponge.
  7. Masking tape.

Getting Started

We fix the stencil on the surface of the tree, securing it with tape. We put putty on the stencil, level the surface with a spatula. Then remove the stencil with both hands and leave the work to dry.

Here we have such a voluminous decor.

Or another option: after the decorative element has dried, paint the surface with brown acrylic paint, then rub the pattern itself and the surface next to it with a candle.

Not everyone has the talent of an artist, and not everyone knows how to draw. This is where stencils come in handy. Transfer to cardboard, cut out, and use stencils for work.

I will not open a secret if I say that slate (chalk paint) is very often used to decorate furniture now. It adheres well, uniformly to the surface, does not require special efforts for painting. But the price is quite high. Therefore, we want to offer a recipe that will help you make your own chalk paint for decoration.

Paint composition:

  1. 250 grams of water-based latex or acrylic paint.
  2. 2 tablespoons of ordinary plaster (can be taken from the children's kit). Plaster can be replaced with chalk.
  3. 1 tbsp. a spoonful of hot water.

Preparation:

  • We take a glass jar, pour 1 spoonful of hot water into it, then pour gypsum there, and mix well.
  • Immediately pour paint into this mass (do not wait for the gypsum to harden).
  • Mix the resulting mass well. The chalk paint is ready. This paint can be used to paint a chest of drawers, a bedside table, and more.

Dresser decor options

There are many options for decoration: using fabric, acrylic or oil paints, the remains of wallpaper, paper, volumetric decor. Even if you just change such a trifle as fittings - buy interesting metal or wooden handles, metal locks with keys in a furniture store, and replace these small details - this can completely change the look of your furniture.

A chest of drawers is an element of the furnishings of many apartments and houses. Its spacious drawers are convenient for storing bed and underwear, clothes and home textiles. During use, the appearance of furniture loses its attractiveness even with careful handling. Product design may become irrelevant in a modern interior. Do-it-yourself restoration of the chest of drawers allows you to return the furniture to its former attractiveness, to revive the appearance.

There are many ways to restore a chest of drawers. Coloring, decoupage or aging will do. You can restore furniture made of plywood, chipboard, restore the look of an old chest of drawers. Before performing any restoration option, old furniture must be prepared and stocked up with materials for work. This will require the following tools:

  • a sander to remove the old coating;
  • putty for wood and a spatula for covering cracks;
  • a screwdriver for dismantling old rusty screws;
  • metal corners with which you can strengthen the structure;
  • fine-grained sandpaper for sanding the coating;
  • brushes and primer for wood for processing furniture for painting;
  • drill for making holes for fittings, fasteners;
  • paint, brushes, roller and tray for home restoration.

Tools

Depending on the finishing option, the list of tools and materials may vary. If the chest of drawers is painted, varnish is used to fix the coating. When using the decoupage technique, you need PVA glue, beautiful stickers that will decorate the surface.

All materials and tools must be prepared in advance, as soon as it is decided how to update the chest of drawers. In order for the furniture to serve for a long time, it is recommended to replace the fixing and decorative fittings with new elements.

Furniture preparation

The restoration of an old chest of drawers will be successful if the furniture is properly prepared for use. The chest of drawers is freed from the things and objects stored in it, drawers are taken out. The old handles are unscrewed - if they are antique, the products can be repainted in gold, bronze or silver. Parts that cannot be restored must be replaced with new fittings. Surface preparation is carried out as follows:

  • to decorate the old chest of drawers with their own hands, they wipe the furniture from dust, dirt. You can use warm soapy water for cleaning;
  • you cannot use aggressive chemical components - ordinary laundry soap will do;
  • carved elements are cleaned with an old toothbrush, and small decorative holes - with an awl or other sharp object;
  • the old paintwork is removed with a grinder, hard-to-reach places are treated with sandpaper;
  • repair of furniture fixtures - loose legs are disassembled, reassembled, adding PVA glue to the joints;
  • wooden slats on which boxes "ride" can be replaced with modern guide runners;
  • if there are cracks and chips on the product, they are covered with wood putty. The mixture dries for at least a day;
  • the restored places are carefully rubbed with fine-grained emery paper so that the surface is even and smooth;
  • to increase the adhesive qualities, the furniture is covered with a primer in two layers, allowing each coating to dry;
  • the primer dries from 12 to 24 hours - it depends on the type of primer chosen.

An antique chest of drawers with a long history may contain a unique brand or mark on the surface of the master - these fragments should be preserved in order to accurately convey the charm of the restored antique. Do-it-yourself dresser restoration requires patience and skill. The process of preparing furniture cannot be ignored, otherwise all work will be in vain.

Restoration options

To return furniture to its presentable appearance, various restoration techniques are used. The simplest option is decorative wallpapering, as in the presented photo. Some craftsmen do the covering with fabrics or lace. You can use stencils to apply original drawings with paint or make complex decor with plaster. But most often the restoration is carried out with the help of painting, spectacular decor.

Decoupage

Decoupage refers to the use of various materials to decorate furniture. For decoration, a variety of cuttings are used, which are glued to the chest of drawers. The theme can be any - floral motifs, birds, portraits, collages from photographs. Acrylic paints and ready-made stickers are used to complete the work. Decoupage of a chest of drawers in the popular shabby chic style - patterns are combined with an aged surface:

  • prepare the surface of the furniture for processing (sanding, putty, primer), take out the boxes and remove the fittings, treat with alcohol;
  • I restore the inner parts of the chest of drawers with white paint or ivory, let it dry for 12 hours;
  • to simulate "scuffs" on the convex parts of the chest of drawers apply a dark stain with a dry brush in a small amount;
  • the outer surfaces of the chest of drawers are covered with a primer, after drying, they are treated with sandpaper;
  • black acrylic paint is applied to the aged areas, rubbed with a paraffin candle after drying;
  • paint the chest of drawers with their own hands in the base color. To make the drawings look expressive, use white, cream, beige;
  • the paint is applied in several layers, each time the coating is dried until completely dry;
  • decorative elements are cut out of decoupage paper. It is convenient to place large parts in the center, small ones in the corners;
  • pictures are coated with PVA glue on the outside and inside, glue is applied to areas of the chest of drawers and decoupage is glued, as in the photo;
  • the edges of the pictures are smoothed with paint to visually erase the borders. Cover the entire chest of drawers with varnish, screw the fittings.

Antique furniture handles are painted semi-antique. If decoupage is done in a modern style, you can choose new fittings to your liking. For decoupage, you can use newspapers, photos, handicraft napkins, stickers.

An interesting variant of Provence style decoupage is a combination of paper floral appliques with lavender splashes. The dresser is painted white, medium-sized blue or purple flowers are glued on, and then droplets of paint are sprayed with an old toothbrush from a distance of one or two meters. The greater the distance, the finer the droplets are.

Replacing metal parts

Old dressers require not only decoration, but also restoration of the fastening system and accessories. Metal elements of the chest of drawers - bolts, screws, handles, corners. Over time, they deteriorate and lose their outer gloss. Beautiful antique fittings can be left if the products are not damaged, or painted. This is true for models in old style and shabby chic design. For modern restoration, furniture handles should be replaced with new products. The fixing parts of the chest of drawers also need repair or replacement. How to restore an old dresser to make furniture more durable:

  • carefully examine the condition of the fasteners;
  • unscrew old loose screws;
  • wood glue is added to the holes;
  • install dowels suitable in size;
  • new fastening screws are screwed into the dowels;
  • frame parts are connected with metal corners;
  • the corners need to be fixed in the inside of the chest of drawers.

Be sure to check the condition of the legs. If they are loose, the products are disassembled and new fasteners are installed. To make the drawers slide easily when opening and closing, furniture rails can be installed instead of mounting strips. The main thing is that they do not violate the harmony and harmony of the restored product. Additionally, furniture can be decorated with metal decorative overlays that imitate carvings or patterns. The main rule of restoration is that first they replace the fasteners, and then they start decorating.

Drawer guides

One of the easiest ways to restore beauty to your dresser is to paint your furniture. This takes a little time, reliably hides the slightest defects and flaws, allows you to give the product any color. Before staining, the chest of drawers is prepared for restoration. The fittings are twisted from it, the boxes are taken out and the old coating is removed. If the chest of drawers is polished, the top layer must be removed thoroughly so that the new paint does not flake off. Painting master class:

  • grinding surfaces, filling cracks, priming;
  • applying paint with a brush on corners and in hard-to-reach places;
  • painting the flat surfaces of the chest of drawers with a paint roller;
  • drying of the first layer, secondary staining, drying;
  • fixing the decorative coating with a layer of varnish.

You need to apply paint to furniture at least twice to make the color rich and beautiful. You can cover the chest of drawers with three or more layers - this is how you can repaint dark furniture in light shades and vice versa. First, the inner parts are painted, and then the outer surfaces are finished. Acrylic paints work well for painting. Alkyd enamels can be used, but they give off toxins and a strong characteristic odor.

Thermal method for removing the old coating

Grinding can be done with a machine or special attachments on a drill.

Acrylic putty will hide defects visible to the eye

It is better to paint with a brush.

Aging

The current trend in furniture restoration is the use of aging techniques. This is how the old chest of drawers can be given an original look. Aging work is slightly different from traditional dyeing. In addition to acrylic paint, white paraffin candles are needed. The aging effect restoration is shown in the photo:

  • furniture is prepared for work - it is cleaned, primed, fasteners are strengthened;
  • highlight accent areas with dark paint (brown or black). For the Provence style, use blue;
  • after the paint has dried, the places where you want to apply the aging effect are rubbed with wax;
  • the entire surface of the chest of drawers is covered with a layer of white paint several times. Places treated with wax are carefully scraped off with a knife;
  • painted surfaces are rubbed with sandpaper to give the furniture the desired antique effect and varnished.

To achieve antique "scuffs" on furniture, you can use contrasting shades - white base and dark accents or a black base background, painted with light paint and rubbed in some places with sandpaper. Aged furniture looks harmoniously in the interiors of shabby chic, Provence, country, vintage houses.
