How to make a concrete lamp with your own hands?

Then the concrete is tightly wrapped in polyethylene and left to dry for a day. After 24 hours, open the product and remove the formwork, if necessary, allow it to dry further. The finished lampshade should be removed without difficulty. After drying, use sandpaper or a sander to smooth out all uneven surfaces, and, if a smooth surface was intended, sand with a felt wheel.

After finishing work on the lampshade, you need to start fixing it. These could be bolts, springs, threads or a pressure ring. The only condition is that the mount must be strong to support the weight of the product. To make such a miracle, you need to prepare a clean small plastic bottle with a handle, a cartridge with a wire and sand concrete in a ratio of 1:3. Just don’t make the concrete too thick, it won’t form properly in this state. It is better to add a plasticizer for better plasticity.

The consistency of the finished solution should be similar to shortbread dough. Therefore, water should be poured in gradually, with each particle of the mixture becoming wet. After preparation, the concrete should be placed in a previously made form, pressing it tightly enough, thereby eliminating the formation of empty spaces. To completely de-air the product, the bag must be shaken thoroughly.

All tools must be washed immediately after use, otherwise the concrete mixture will set, making its removal almost impossible. After two days (that’s how long it takes for the concrete to harden), you should get rid of the bag and unscrew the bolt. To give the concrete lamp originality, it is recommended to make additional holes in it. This will help diffuse the light flux. A light source is placed in a plastic bottle, which is then connected to a switch. The finished device can be placed either on the wall or hung from the ceiling.

I was faced with the problem of how to remove the finished, cast concrete lamp from the mold that you make. The more advanced your project, the harder it will be to pull the finished product out of the mold intact. Also, think about weight. You want to use as little concrete as possible, but the thinner the product, the heavier the form needs to be made. By the way, I do not recommend using plywood less than 20 mm thick.

The shape of the concrete lamp must be made in such a way that all its parts and sides can be dismantled. Sketch out a sketch of the shape, put down the dimensions, determine the locations of fasteners and ties and start manufacturing.

As a rule, more complex shapes for filling, require more liquid mixtures.

- Make sure the pour goes slowly when you start pouring the concrete. Use a small bucket or similar container. Use your hands to test and move the concrete to make sure it reaches all corners of the concrete light fixture shape. Also, if you use polystyrene foam, make sure it stays where it is intended.

— If you use Oscilliating concrete or similar, you need to vibrate the concrete. Vibration improves the flow of concrete and helps fill voids/air pockets that might otherwise be present in the casting. You may notice that the concrete is receding slightly, which is a sign that the void has been filled.

— When the form is filled, cover it plastic film to cover it for a day or two. If you want to give a concrete lamp additional strength, you need to allow the concrete to harden slowly. I usually try to leave the formwork for 2-3 days before attempting to remove it.

Now you can start mixing the concrete. The main thing is not to overdo it with water. The mixture should resemble cookie dough.

Lay out the resulting concrete into a mold. Use a large spoon to fill the pan.

All that remains is to connect the socket to the lamp. I would like to note that hanging a lamp on a wire is very risky, and sooner or later the weight may crush the wire. Therefore, I recommend using a decorative chain for hanging.
