Repaint mdf door. What paint to paint mdf doors

Repair in your house or apartment is quite commonplace, although many are afraid of it, but still agree to do it, however, a reasonable question may arise - how to paint an MDF door? At first glance, it would seem that there is nothing complicated in this - take a brush and paint, but not everything is so simple - the result may be different.

Below we will discuss the most practical and effective methods, and in addition, you can watch the thematic video in this article as additional material.

What do we need

Explanation. MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard, MDF) is a medium density fibreboard.
Such material is made by dry pressing of fine wood shavings.
Melamine-modified urea resins serve as a binder there.

Tools and materials

Note. Manufacturers produce their products already primed, that is, ready for use, so it should not be primed.

  • First of all, you should figure out how to paint MDF doors, that is, we mean paints and varnishes. The best, one might even say, the only option for such work are acrylic paints on water based for wood products. Despite such a seemingly “flimsy” base, like water, they have an excellent saturated color, do not fade, they can be washed with a wet cloth (sponge) without any problems, and besides, they are practically odorless.
  • Some try to use a substance such as Zinga conductive paint for this, but this is more like a cold galvanizing method and is more suitable for metal products than for lumber. But Polystil fire-retardant paints for metal, although they can be used for wood, are afraid of active exposure to moisture and are additionally covered with enamels. (See also the article.)

  • To apply paint on the door surface, it is most convenient and qualitatively more efficient to use flat narrow and wide paint brushes. Panels, of course, are more convenient to paint with wide brushes, but if there is glass in the door, then, of course, a narrow brush will be much better. When buying them, you should pay attention to the working part and check if the bristles are climbing, otherwise you will have to constantly remove the hairs from the surface or you may not even notice it, and after drying it (the hair) will leave a mark. (See also the article.)

  • If you have regular door with two panels, then for speed painting works and to save paint, you can use a terry or wool roller, and already paint the recesses with a brush. Just do not use a foam roller, as it slips and the coating is obtained with bald patches.

Getting to the "painting"

So, apply the first layer of paint with your own hands with a brush or paint roller, or using both tools and do not be afraid to paint the ends. The fact is that poorly painted door ends are a fairly common occurrence, because if there is an extra thin layer there, after a while problems begin to arise - the door stops closing normally - it rubs against the box.

After that, it is often necessary to sink the canopies or break the box with spacers.

This does not happen with a water-based acrylic coating, as the liquid soaks into the wood and the film is completely unimportant. After you have applied the first layer, you can rest for 15 or 20 minutes - during this time the door will be dry, but what you see may upset you - the surface will change little (especially for light colors) and besides, it will stains and stains!

But don't let this bother you - after all, you have to apply the next layer - and you will do it, and in addition, such actions are provided for by the instructions that are printed on the package (jar, canister).

After the second coat has dried, carefully inspect the surface so that it does not leave flaws in the form of spots or uneven tone. If you do not notice anything of the kind, and everything suits you, then you can use it, but if necessary, it is better to apply a third layer, which will certainly be the last.

But even now the canvas is subject to inspection after drying, because you could simply skip any of the sections, and this is not surprising, because at this stage the shades will merge strongly and it will be possible to distinguish fresh from old only by brilliance.

When everything is ready and the door is completely dry, you can start the operation process and forget about the roller and brushes for several years, and this is quite normal, but there are people who have a creative gyrus hidden somewhere deep in the brain, which always haunts, even when everything is fine.

Well, then you can add a little variation that won't catch your eye, as it's a pure classic - look at the photo above - it uses regular bronze and a thin brush.

Conclusion

Now you know how to color MDF door and you understand that it is quite simple and, one might say, even pleasant, since in the process of work you will not even smell the smell. Just do not neglect the instructions and do not use other paints, then your door will turn out beautiful and will last you a long time!

Moreover, this allows the possibility construction market. To do this, you need to buy a primed one (that is, ready for painting). Such a door is well painted with acrylic paint (which means water-based - almost odorless). Acrylic paint is well applied to an MDF door primed even with a brush and does not leave streaks on the surface, which is very important for the aesthetic appearance of the door.

how to paint mdf doors? How to paint the door?

It is good to apply the paint (it's faster, and besides, the paint is saved) and with a brush (the brush is good for the convex places of the door panel).

Apply the first coat with a brush to the surface of the door. should dry in 15-20 minutes. This will reveal a pleasant surprise - the paint is almost odorless. This is due to the fact that the paint is based on water. At the same time, the quality of painting does not deteriorate in any way. Over time, the coating does not fade, does not fade. Doors can be washed with a damp cloth.

After the first coat of paint is applied to the surface of the door, it will be found that the paint has soaked into the surface and the door looks unevenly painted. A second coat of paint is required. Perhaps, after the second time, a third, final, application of paint will be required. And now - everything, the door is ready.

How much acrylic paint is required for one set of doors
(kit is: door leaf, box 5 running meters, platband 10 running meters). Based on personal experience A: One set of door requires one kilogram of acrylic paint.

Where to buy acrylic paint

Acrylic paint is sold wherever residential paint is sold.

Attention: for painting primed MDF doors, next paint- WATER-BASED ACRYLIC PAINT FOR WOOD PRODUCTS (WINDOWS, DOORS).

Acrylic paint, intended, for example, for walls, is by no means suitable for MDF doors.

Oil paint is also not suitable, as it is poorly applied to the door. Leaves a shine that is unusual for, and there are also stains on the surface of the door from oil paint.

MDF and wood painting technology

Preparation for painting MDF and wood

The technology of painting MDF doors and furniture (facades) involves preparation, painting and intermediate operations at a temperature of 18-28 ° C, relative humidity of 50-80% and wood moisture of 8-14%. The surfaces to be painted, the paintwork materials used and the painting equipment must have the same temperature.

Primer, paint and varnish for MDF and wood are supplied ready for painting and pre-training do not require. If the tinting of paintwork materials (LKM) is carried out independently, you should be guided by general recommendations by color tint.

Before painting MDF and wood primer, paint and varnish must be filtered through a 50-100 micron filter. The filtering process is essential for the finishing material, especially for high gloss finishes. If filtered paintwork materials have been stored for more than two weeks, the paintwork should be filtered again before painting.

Wood primer, intermediate sanding
When painting porous wood species before application finish coat primer for wood and MDF should be used. Recommended primer spray settings: operating pressure 2–4 atm., nozzle size 1.6–2.4 mm, wet layer thickness 80–120 µm. Drying of the primer can be carried out in the range from 16 to 60 ° C, while the drying time until ready for grinding is from 6 hours to 30 minutes. When varnishing doors, the first layer of wood varnish can act as a primer layer.

When working out the technology of painting wood and MDF, the optimal test for readiness for sanding is whether the sandpaper is clogged or not. The primer for wood and MDF is designed with the condition as manual grinding, and machine, also the primer is ideal for infrared drying. When grinding, do not allow grinding to the base; if such areas occur, the product should be primed again.

Painting interior doors

Painting with finishing coatings is carried out by air spraying: working pressure 2.5–4 atm., nozzle size 1.6–2.4 mm. MDF paint and lacquer are ideally suited for HVLP (spray gun) painting. On request, acrylic paint and wood lacquer are available in roller application combined with infrared drying.

Painting (painting) of MDF and wood is carried out in one layer, the recommended thickness of the wet layer is 120-150 microns. For more convenient painting, the door leaf is located at an angle of 15-20 °, painting in a vertical position also does not cause any particular difficulties.

Drying painted wood and MDF

Drying wood and painted MDF acrylic paint, for maximum productivity and stability of production, is carried out at a temperature of 35 to 60 ° C at a relative humidity of 50-80%, the drying time is from 1.5 to 2 hours. It is preferable to use a convective drying method. It is recommended to control the relative humidity in the dryer, the drying time of water-based paints and varnishes is very dependent on this parameter.

It should be noted that familiarization with the technology of painting interior doors with industrial paintwork materials on MDF and wood, drying is not recommended when room temperature. Seemingly easy to use, requires professional skills and painting experience.

Warehousing and transportation

Before storage, the painted panels of interior doors must be lined with soft paper or packed in individual cardboard packages to avoid friction on the painted surface. It is not recommended to expose painted products to long-term exposure to water and negative temperatures the first seven days. Warehousing and storage: 5-25 °C at a relative humidity of 50-80%. Doors can be transported at temperatures up to -25 °С.

Carrying out repairs on your own, and not having sufficient construction experience, you have to face many tasks that you need to solve yourself and make the right decision.

When the question arose about the choice of interior doors, the repair was already coming to an end, and as sometimes happens, the money allocated for this event was slowly running out. In order to save money, I decided to buy and. The doors are not bad, the only color did not suit me, it was a white hospital color,

We independently make a beautiful and expensive door from a cheap door.

but for the price very, even arranged. The question was how to paint the door to keep the structure and give the door a normal look. Friends advised Polish Lakobeits,
We independently make a beautiful and expensive door from a cheap door.

Varnish has a liquid consistency, due to which the varnish penetrates deep into the pores of the wood, filling them and forming a thin, uniform, water-repellent layer. varnish coating. It is also very convenient that the varnish and tone are mixed in one, thanks to this you do not need to first tint and then open with varnish, saving time and effort.

The technology of applying varnish is very simple. The varnish is applied with a brush, roller or sprayer.

The best result is achieved when the varnish is applied with a brush, for several reasons. Doors have a certain panel pattern, and in these places, applying varnish with an airbrush or roller is very difficult to achieve a uniform coating. This can only be done by a highly qualified specialist. It is very easy to work with a brush even without certain skills. Before use, Lakobeits must be stirred well, this will ensure uniformity of tone. You need to use a special brush (for varnish). In such a brush, the pile holds very well and does not fall out.

Lacquer should be applied along the fibers of the tree, or structure, in a thin, even layer. Passing the drawing of the panel, you need to be especially careful, smudges can form in these places, which must be immediately removed with a brush.

How better doors Lachit before installation, or after? The first door I laced before installation. Putting the door on a horizontal surface, being afraid of smudges. I will say that the process is very inconvenient. You need to open one side, wait a day, turn it over and open the other side, and then repeat the process again, because the door needs to be covered with two layers of varnish.

I decided to open all the other doors with varnish, when the doors were already installed in the openings with embedded locks and mounted cashing, the process exceeded all expectations in terms of speed.

We independently make a beautiful and expensive door from a cheap door.

Doors prepared in this way can be installed in all rooms. Two coats of lacquer provide door protection against high humidity and frequent temperature changes. The cover is very durable and practical.

Thanks to Lakobeits, the doors acquired a beautiful and very durable, walnut tone. Virtually indistinguishable from natural wood.

  • Specific wishes of the household.
  • Availability of materials.
  • The general style of the interior of the apartment.

Interior doors can be painted using several options:

  • One color with the floor.
  • To match the wall decoration.
  • For existing furniture:
  1. kitchen set from MDF;
  2. wardrobe in the bedroom;
  3. wall or upholstered furniture in the living room.
  • Decorate antique.
  • Use Contrast individual parts, which is especially important for the design of paneled models.
  • Apply a pattern to the painted surface.
  • Pay attention to the structure of the tree.

Wherein:

  • Bright and monochromatic options fit perfectly into modern design as in the photo.
  • By emphasizing the wood structure or painting the door with an antique effect, you can decorate classic interior or country style.

Tip: If there is any doubt about self-fulfillment hard work, you should stop at the universal option - paint the door in White color that fits perfectly in any room.

What paint to choose for the door

The type and color of paint is selected depending on the type of work being done.

It can be:

  • Highlighting the natural beauty of wood on the door leaf. In this case, you need to use:
  1. colorless varnishes;
  2. stain;
  3. oil impregnations;
  4. varnishes for toning.
  • Hiding an existing pattern by applying a new one that looks like wood fiber. To do this, choose such paints under the tree as:
  1. Acrylic.
  2. Oil.
  3. Polyurethane.
  4. Perchlorovinyl.

Tip: When choosing paint for doors, preference should be given to water-based acrylic. They are perfect for brush work, they have the most suitable consistency for this.

When staining bath doors or installed in wet areas, it is better to purchase alkyd paints excellent moisture repellent.

Influences the choice of paint and type of coating, for example:

  • Wooden (see. Painting wooden doors: how and with what to do) and laminated doors can be painted with any composition.
  • For MDF and veneered surfaces, aggressive components cannot be used.

Features of painting a wooden door

A wooden door is the easiest to paint.

For this:

  • Surface is pre-cleaned old paint. This is done:
  1. grinding machine;
  2. sandpaper;
  3. building hair dryer;
  4. spatula.
  • Selected coverage. You can take paint or stain, which includes special impregnation and varnish.

When painting a panel or paneled wooden door, work must be done in a horizontal plane.

Wherein:

  • Shield canvases are painted from top to bottom, and then from left to right in small squares.
  • On paneled canvases, painting begins with recesses, and then the protruding parts are painted in the direction from the center to the edges.

Make up wooden doors roller (see), and protrusions and small details are worked out with a brush.

When decorating an antique surface, you need to prepare:

  • Two different colors paints.
  • Ordinary sandpaper.
  • Furniture wax.
  • Appropriate antique fittings.

How to paint a veneer door

Painting doors made of veneered MDF is a little more difficult than a simple wooden one.

However, this may be required if:

  • The specified service life of the coating has expired.
  • The need to repaint a new product.
  • During the repair, the coating was damaged.
  • Not quite satisfied with the previous color of the coating.

For painting veneer doors, water-based compositions are used:

  • Polyurethane.
  • Glyphthalic.

Tip: When painting a veneer door, do not use nitro paint. Due to the presence of toxic components in it, the veneer is covered with matte spots, which are difficult to hide even with a glossy varnish.

To preserve the structure of the veneer, it is better to use a tinted varnish.

The instruction for painting an interior veneered door offers:

  • Delete upper layer varnish. If necessary, the surface is corrected, with the composition for the floor directly on the previous coating.
  • All irregularities are eliminated with a special primer.
  • An even layer of paint is applied.
  • The veneer is varnished.

How to paint a laminate door

In order for the coating to last for a long time, the surface must be properly prepared. You can paint a laminated door with any composition.

How to paint a laminated door:

  • The canvas is placed in a horizontal position.
  • grinder or sandpaper with a fine grain, a layer of varnish is removed. Most often, it is enough to remove only the top layer, using wax dirt-repellent impregnations.
  • A layer of paint is applied to the surface with a velor roller or spray gun (see Types of spray guns: how to choose the right one).
  • After the coating has dried, another layer of paint is applied.
  • The surface is left to dry for at least 24 hours.
  • The door is covered with a transparent protective varnish.

Tip: Do not grind too deep, as this may damage the coating, which will open the chip layer of the material.

How to paint an MDF door

The MDF surface requires careful selection of paint.

It could be:

  • Acrylic composition on a water-based basis.
  • Paint containing tone and varnish.

You can paint MDF doors with a roller, but better with a spray gun so that the composition is distributed more evenly over the surface.

So that there are no irregularities on the MDF, you need a surface in advance:

  • Remove old coating.
  • Remove dust.
  • Eliminate existing roughness.
  • Filter the paint.

Tip: When painting old door semi-antique or wood-like, we must not forget that some compounds are toxic when evaporated. You need to take care of the ventilation of the room and use personal protective equipment.

How to create an imitation of wood fiber on the surface

You can make a drawing under a tree on any surface. At the same time, technologies will differ only by preparatory stage, and the drawing is performed in the following sequence:

  • The canvas is painted with light paint, you can white.
  • A layer of liquid soap is applied to the entire surface. Before painting a white door under a tree, time is given to dry the layer of base paint applied to it, which is indicated on the package.
  • A darker layer of paint is applied, creating curls that will mimic wood fibers, and liquid soap washed off.
  • After this procedure, the dissolved paint dries, creating a pattern that imitates natural look wood.

The high price of doors made of natural wood does not always allow you to purchase them. To do this, you can consider the stages of creating a wood pattern on relatively cheap plywood.

Wherein:

  • A special brush is purchased.

  • The tool moves along the surface with movements resembling the process of combing.
  • The door is painted after such a procedure in different colors. In this case, the dye spreads and creates a pattern resembling wood fibers due to changes in the structure.
  • For staining, several dyes should be used immediately, which will form the required pattern due to the presence of different penetrating abilities in the compositions.
  • After the dyes have dried, the entire surface of the plywood is sanded.

When creating a door, a wood pattern can:

  • Underline.
  • Create.

Despite the difference in technologies and materials for their implementation, the common points are the choice of materials that should fit together.

For example:

  • When creating a clearer image on the finished wood structure, it is necessary to use various impregnations.
  • When used as a finishing coat of lacquer, the impregnation should be stain, not drying oil.
  • Many materials have good absorbency, which requires the surface to be treated with paints and impregnations several times.

What kind of wood grain paint for doors is best suited, how to apply it on surfaces, you can find out in the video in this article.

MDF interior door is one of the most common and available options. Let's discuss what it is, what performance properties a canvas made of this material has. How and how to paint an MDF door. The article provides reviews of the owners and recommendations for installation by one's own hands. For convenience, the material is provided with a video instruction.

What are MDF doors

The material consists of dried wood fibers and binders, the main of which is lignin. This is a natural raw material, at a price much lower than solid wood. This is largely due to the popularity of MDF doors. The fabric structure consists of wooden frame, enclosed in it honeycomb filler and sheets of chip material on both sides. In addition to the democratic cost, the doors demonstrate the following positive characteristics:

How the MDF door leaf is arranged

  • Resistance to mechanical damage;
  • Durability;
  • Immunity to fungi and mold;
  • Possibility of installation in a room with a humid environment;
  • No deformation during temperature changes;
  • Ease of installation;
  • Light weight;
  • fire safety;
  • Do not contain toxic substances.

MDF door panels can be decorated to look like stone, imitate wood texture, etc. Often they are painted in a variety of colors. When choosing, you need to pay attention to the thickness of the sheet used in the design. This indicator should be at least 3-5 mm. The thickness of the MDF is important for strength and sound insulation. In addition, the internal filling of the structure also affects the ability to protect against extraneous noise.

Important: Corrugated cardboard inside the door leaf does not provide good sound insulation, while polyurethane foam does an excellent job of this function.

How and with what to paint an MDF door

The result of staining directly depends on the chosen paint. For MDF, the following options are suitable:

  • Nitro paint;
  • acrylic;
  • Alkyd;
  • Water-dispersion;
  • Oil enamel.

When working with most dyes, it is necessary to ensure good ventilation, ventilation, it is advisable to use a respirator.

One of the significant disadvantages of MDF doors is the complexity of restoration. A damaged canvas made of this material is extremely difficult to restore. Therefore, most often purchased new door instead of the broken one. You can save a lot by buying not a laminated version, but a cheaper one, for painting. In this case, when minimal cost finance and labor can be obtained fully meeting all color solution room door.

If it is decided to update the old door by painting, it must be prepared. The canvas is removed from the hinges, the old coating is completely removed from its surface. This can be done with the help of special washes, grinder or heating with a building hair dryer. Next, the canvas is sanded and, if necessary, puttied.

Before work, all surfaces that are not to be painted are carefully sealed with molar tape. Directly painting is recommended to be done from top to bottom. The ends are tinted last. Most coloring compositions are applied in two layers. This achieves brightness and color saturation.

DIY installation

Installation of MDF doors differs little from similar structures made of other materials. It is necessary to prepare the doorway by cleaning it and adjusting it to size. The box must be firmly inserted into the opening and securely fastened. MDF is able to sag under the pressure of an expanding polyurethane foam. You can avoid this trouble by using special brackets during installation. Or you can place strong plates between the canvas and the box to prevent deformation. Sometimes a fully assembled door block is mounted.

Advice. When installing an MDF door, it is advisable to use low expansion foam. This will reduce the risk of deformation of the box.

Although the material itself is moisture resistant, manufacturers rarely laminate or paint the back of the box. This becomes a weak point as moisture seeps in from there. To protect the box from deformation, you need to lubricate it yourself inside silicone or impregnation.

The next step is fixed, the canvas is hung. Be sure to use the level. All distortions are eliminated. Then they are installed, fittings crash. Getting started is informative to watch a video that clearly shows the process.

Owner reviews

Interior doors made of MDF have earned mixed reviews. Most of the negative characteristics are associated with unscrupulous manufacturers or sellers. After all, under beautiful facade it is impossible to see the inner content. So, after the purchase, it turned out that the thickness of the plate is only 2 mm. Which is not enough for a door leaf that is under constant load.

Sometimes thick cardboard is used instead of MDF. The service life of such structures is minimal, the quality is low. A manufacturer who saves on all stages of production can offer a very attractive price. However, it is precisely because of non-compliance with manufacturing technology that MDF doors have a bad reputation. The owners write that they swell, scratch badly, peel off, etc.

However, doors produced in accordance with the rules and standards have earned flattering reviews. They were purchased from reputable sellers. The owners characterize them as easy to care for, durable and really resistant to high humidity. But their price is no longer as low as most consumers hope.

Approaching the choice of MDF doors wisely and carefully, you can buy a durable and beautiful thing. Care quality product is to remove contaminants from the surface. The installation of such a block will not be difficult. The weight of MDF is small, it is easy to work with it.

How to paint an MDF door with your own hands: video

MDF painting: painting technology for MDF products

Door leaf made by you or semi-finished door leaf without exterior finish, purchased in a store, you can paint or finish its surface with various non-standard methods with your own hands (photo on the right, click to download a larger resolution file).

As a rule, finishing or updating the appearance of a door consists in painting it with ordinary ready-made paints and varnishes. various colors. This method of painting the door is practiced everywhere, regardless of the fame of the company or the qualifications of specialists. It's just that everyone does it.

short and important explanations,

which may be useful to you not only on the topic of this article.

But if applied non-standard ways do-it-yourself door painting, you can turn a new or old door leaf into an exclusive, which not only pleases the eye, but also attracts attention with its unusualness. At the same time, the cost of painting a door can be ridiculously small, and the result will exceed all your expectations.

Do-it-yourself high-quality door painting technologies.

For convenient operation with any type of door painting, first of all, it is necessary to prepare workplace, which can be placed in the yard, in the garage or any utility room of your site, or simply in an empty room in a city apartment.

To equip the workplace, you just need to put 2 stools on a flat surface, on which you should put a piece of board no longer than the width of the door leaf. On the boards you need to put a lint-free dense fabric so that after turning the door over on the varnished surface there are no scratches, dents and other unwanted marks. On the stand prepared in this way, we put the door leaf prepared for painting.

With this position of the door leaf, it is very convenient to paint the door. You will appreciate it in the process of work - the door leaf is located at a distance of at least 40 centimeters from the floor, which allows you to paint with an airbrush without raising dust from the floor with a jet of air from the airbrush. In addition, it creates the convenience of painting the door while standing in full height without straining the spine.

Painting doors with varnish or paint should be done in the following order: using an airbrush, first blow out all the ends, bypassing the door around, then cover the face of the door, starting from yourself and not stopping until the entire surface is completely painted.

Each painting pass should begin and end outside the door leaf. In no case should you paint sections of the door towards each other (although it is more convenient). That is, first paint the door to half, and then, moving to the other side, continue painting the second half of the door. Want to spoil? Try it.

This means that no matter how wide the door is and no matter how short the hands are, painting should be done from any (convenient), but only on one side from beginning to end.

Painting the other side of the door can be started only after the first side (plasti) has completely dried, but not earlier than 2 hours when using nitrocellulose paints and not earlier than the period of complete drying indicated on the package for other types of paints and varnishes.

Important! The painted surfaces of the faces and ends of the doors never peel off, as they are not glued, but drawn. Peeling trim is a disease of branded doors.

Consider several ways to paint the door with your own hands.

The first way to paint the door.

The method most commonly used in Everyday life when updating the appearance of the door leaf. How is it usually done? The paint of the required color is purchased ready for use. The door is lightly sanded and the door leaf is painted with a brush or roller. Not the hardest, but not the most original way door painting, but very often applicable.

But if you approach painting the door creatively, you can make it look almost indistinguishable from the new one. What needs to be done so that the painting of a new or old door is of high quality? First of all, before painting the door with any kind of paints and varnishes, its surface must be well prepared and the surface must be primed.

The primer is a 30% solution of the paint

which will subsequently be applied as a decorative layer.

That is, ready-to-use paint from the manufacturer must be diluted with a solvent (thinner) in a ratio of one to three.

The primed surface of the door leaf will not only increase the adhesion of the paint layer, but will also allow you to see all the flaws in the prepared surface. After applying the primer, it is not forbidden to make an additional leveling of the surface by partial or complete re-spackling of the surface.

If the quality of the surface suits you, then we paint the door with the paint of the selected color in two layers using an airbrush. Painting a door with an airbrush allows you to get the highest quality surface, not only in appearance, but also in strength.

With a transparent door finish, I advise you to use colored NC paints for painting. You can get the desired color of the varnish by adding art oil paints to the varnish on any basis (NC, PF).

When using NC paints, after the second layer has dried (after 20-30 minutes), we lightly sand the entire surface of the door leaf with a fine or worn emery cloth to remove roughness, sweep away the dust with a thick brush and cover it in one layer with matte furniture or parquet varnish. When using slow-drying paints, recoating is carried out only after the first layer has completely dried.

You can focus on the drying time of the paint according to the instructions attached to each package of paint. But it should be borne in mind that the drying time is indicated with the obligatory maintenance of the appropriate temperatures and humidity. When the temperature drops below 20 degrees and the ambient humidity rises, the drying time must be increased.

By running the palm of your hand over the painted surface, you can feel the quality of the surface finish. We cover any surface with varnish in order not to spoil the color of the paint during light sanding. If we try to lightly sand a simply painted surface to remove small fluff, we will get clearly visible stripes that will ruin the entire decorative look.

That is, it is impossible to grind the paint, but varnished surface can.

While one side of the door dries, let's talk about nitrocellulose enamel. What gives the use of NC paints when painting a door? First of all, it is the speed of finishing the door and any painting work. In addition, NC paint allows you to work in unsuitable rooms (in the garage, in the yard in the open air) - the quick drying of the paint layer eliminates the adhesion of specks, dust or small insects.

For the use of any other types of paints, the drying of which to touch is more than half an hour, a special sterile room is required, which naturally complicates the work.

Try to paint not in direct sunlight, but in the shade. If we paint the door in the sun, we can get a disgusting result in quality. This will happen because the face of the door leaf may have too high temperature and NC paint will dry instantly, without having time to stick to the surface.

But if we cover the surface of the door leaf heated by the sun with parquet varnish, we will get an exceptionally hard and durable surface. Notice the difference and use these LMB features as appropriate.

So, one side of the door is dry, turn over and paint the other side of the door leaf using the same technology. And not necessarily in the same color, because in another room there may be a different finish. It is worth noting that the process is quite simple, but if the door is heavy, then it is better to enlist the support of assistants. After dismantling the door itself, all fittings (handles, lock plates, locks) are removed from it and it is either leaned at an angle against the wall (which is not very convenient for painting), or placed horizontally on a pre-prepared goat (in some cases, you will have to use two of these supports).
