How to decorate an interior door. We decorate the old door with our own hands: decor ideas

Carrying out repairs in an apartment or house, we often wonder what things should be changed and which ones should be continued to use. As a rule, high-quality doors remain in good condition for a long time, but against the background of new wallpaper or other wall decorations, they simply cease to harmonize in color or style. Considering that the purchase and installation of even one new interior door is not a budgetary undertaking, it seems to be an excellent alternative. DIY door decor. Moreover, there are many ways to do it quickly, inexpensively and tastefully.

Coloring

So, the first and most simplified way to transform an old door surface is to paint it. This method is applicable to absolutely all materials, the main thing is to remove the door mechanism from the hinges before painting and place it in a horizontal position on the floor - this way the paint will dry evenly and will not flow down. It is very important not to forget to remove the previous paint or clean it with sandpaper.

In addition to monochrome painting, there are many effective ways to make your door decor truly special and memorable with paint:

  • Painting the sides of an interior door two different colors to match the color scheme of the rooms it separates.
  • Application of wide vertical stripes in two colors in an American style that mimic country style. Ideal for a country house or cottage.
  • Painting moldings in any color that contrasts with the main shade. This technique corresponds to a classic interior or modern design. If moldings are not provided, they can be recreated manually using thin baguettes or slats attached to the surface in the form of symmetrical rectangles.
  • Drawing with stencils. You can decorate the surface with absolutely any stylized drawings - be it monograms made in the style of the classics, frames drawn in the form of moldings or ornaments and labyrinths in ethnic style. The paint here can be used both canned and aerosol.
  • Author's drawing. If you are good at drawing, use your talent for home decor purposes. An author's drawing made by one's own hands, artistic painting, or even a full-fledged painting the size of the entire door plane will turn into a full-fledged art object of your interior and will be a real pride of the house.
  • Glass coloring. If your interior doors contain glass fragments, they can also be effectively diversified. By painting the door glass in different saturated colors, you will give it a fresco effect, which is associated with vintage design direction.

Wall mural

The decor of interior doors with your own hands is quite simple to implement with the help of photo wallpapers. This is a special type of photo wallpaper, which can be easily picked up and purchased at any building supermarket or market.

Due to the affordable price, you can change door photo wallpapers quite often, thus creating new moods in the interior. Another advantage of this kind of decoration is the ease of pasting. Step-by-step instructions for applying wallpaper are included with each roll. At the same time, experts recommend applying an additional layer of varnish over the entire texture after pasting - thus, the photo wallpaper will last much longer and take on a brighter glossy look.

Paper and vinyl wallpapers

Of course, the door surface completely pasted over with ordinary wallpaper looks cheap and not aesthetically pleasing. However, making an abstract drawing or ornament from pieces of paper or vinyl wallpaper using appliqué technology left after pasting the walls of rooms is a great idea. In addition to the fact that the color scheme of the decoration will repeat the general concept of the interior, this method almost does not require the cost of additional materials. Fragments of wallpaper can be used to glue the molding cells on the doors, while the unglued areas are best painted with paint that matches in color, or differs by several shades from the color of your wallpaper.

Fabric decor

The choice of textiles is always much wider than the choice of wallpaper, so this type of decoration provides just a boundless flight of fancy. Before proceeding, some technical nuances should be taken into account: first, if you use glue, it should not leave spots and stains on the fabric, and second, the fabric should not be loose or fleecy. The ideal material for this work is thick cotton, of the type used for patchwork. If you are not sure that the selected material will interact normally with the adhesive, use double-sided masking tape - in this case it is a win-win option.

There are many examples of do-it-yourself textile door decor in the photo of various thematic resources:

  • Finishing with fabric inside the moldings with painting the rest of the fragments. Still remains the most popular and traditional option. At the same time, the fabric must necessarily balance with the shade of paint and the color scheme of the room's wallpaper, since this technique is more classical in nature.
  • Application of the patchwork technique. You can prepare a sewn patchwork cloth in advance and carefully attach it to a fragment of the plane - this option is perfect for any country interior and just a cozy bedroom or nursery. Along the perimeter of the application, you can install thin slats or baguettes of 0.5-1 cm, or you can paint the gaps between the individual parts thanks to a thin brush.
  • Drapery and curtain technique. This method is optimal for interiors in the style of Provence, country and romanticism. Its essence lies in the fact that glass is removed from the doors with glass inserts, and instead of them, draped fabric is fixed with a fishing line. Outwardly, it resembles curtains on the windows in the house. A natural, non-synthetic material is best for this, such as cotton, linen, canvas or lace in neutral colors. Along the "curtain" you can decorate with a small silk ribbon in an accent color or pick up the fabric a little with it.
  • Combination of fabric and other materials. An interior door can acquire a unique and sophisticated look if it is decorated with different materials at the same time. For example, the main part of the plane can be occupied by a fabric finish, a gypsum baguette made to look like stucco molding can be framed above and below it, and the remaining extreme fragments can be painted with paint to match the entire decoration.

stickers

Special stickers for door planes can be purchased at any building supermarket. This is a fairly simple method of decorating and harmonizes best in children's rooms. Decorating the old surface with stickers in the form of cartoon characters or simply funny images in the form of the sun, stars or animals will not only diversify the overall atmosphere of the room, but will not leave your children indifferent.

Children's drawings

Continuing the theme of children's rooms, let's remember everyone's favorite family tradition of hanging the results of children's creativity in plain sight. If your drawing loves to draw, help him create his own gallery of drawings, the place of which will be at the entrance to his room.

Other spectacular textures

In addition to those mentioned above, there are a huge variety of options for decorating door planes, you just need to use your imagination. In addition, some design options will not require additional financial investments from you, but can be implemented using secondary materials, which you may have forgotten about for a long time:

  • Old geographical maps. Perfect for decorating a children's room, verandas and balconies. Fragments of cards are glued, as a rule, inside the moldings and painted around the perimeter.
  • Notes. The technique of pasting notes is no different from the previous version, however, they can look harmoniously in any part of your home. The musical texture carries a classic mood, so it is best suited for the corresponding interior.
  • Cork. Finishing the door plane with pressed cork material is technically simple. Special cork panels sit on glue over the entire surface or in separate places. In order for the material to last longer, it is advisable to cover it with one layer of varnish after gluing. It is worth considering that this option is not the best suited for the kitchen and bathroom, since the cork reacts in a special way to moisture and evaporation and can be deformed. Also note that cork material is not cheap and is not sold everywhere.
  • Slate. Recently, elements of the slate board are increasingly appearing in modern interiors, both at home and commercial, which clearly indicates the relevance of such a tool. You can recreate the imitation of a coated board at home by fixing a special coating on the door surface. The most commonly used color for this board is black, but chocolate and emerald shades can be considered, depending on your overall color scheme. In the case of such a choice, it will be necessary to acquire crayons (both white and multi-colored). In addition to its decorative value, a slate board can serve as your personal organizer, because on it you can fix plans for the day, month, year, write down various reminders, as well as wise and motivational thoughts. It is desirable to dilute all your notes with elementary drawings so that the general view does not seem too official and boring.

Whatever version of the door decor you choose, be sure: this is the right decision in terms of practicality, economy and creativity. Having taken up this kind of decoration of your home, you get the opportunity to quickly and effectively transform the interior. In addition, all family members can be involved in the creative process and everyone can do their part of the work. This will provide a boring and useful joint pastime with your household.

Interior doors the interior is no exception. doors, and there are at least two of them in the apartment ( input and in the bathroom), in addition to their main purpose, are also an important decorative element. Few will decide to update the doors on their own. It is much easier to purchase a ready-made model, but if you are full of inspiration and creativity, template variations are not for you. repainting

An inexpensive and quick way to give a second life to a door (albeit not so perfect) is to apply several layers of plain paints. To do this, the door is removed from the hinges, but you can leave it in an upright position, after covering it with something floor so as not to stain it. The next step, which requires patience, is the removal of old paint with a spatula. After that, the surface is cleaned with sandpaper with a medium grain, all cracks and irregularities are sealed with wood putty and once again everything is rubbed with sandpaper. Internally, the glazing and the part of the wall adjacent to the panels are sealed with masking tape. If your budget for repairs allows, purchase acrylic or latex washable paint (glossy or matte at your own discretion). These types of paint are odorless and dry quickly, forming a durable protective film. Easily washed off with water in contact with the skin.

To emphasize the expressiveness of the door leaf, there is a technique for highlighting moldings (embossed contours). Black moldings on - a classic solution. Also have the right to a worthy decorating championship any other color combinations. If the canvas is solid, you can purchase or make to order thin wooden planks already painted in the desired color and make the moldings yourself (they are securely glued with liquid nails).

You can not stop at the decoration of moldings alone, but also completely decorate the door in several colors. These can be compositions of rhombuses, circles, squares, vertical stripes, etc. In combination with the interiors of the two rooms where the door is installed, its own color palette can be selected. To create different shades, you need white acrylic paint and a set of colors.

DIY door decor is a great way to add variety and a touch of creativity to the interior or exterior of your home. This is especially true on the eve of the holidays. In addition, small defects may appear at the door over time, which, again, decoration will help to eliminate. How to decorate your door so that it looks stylish and beautiful, read in this article.

DIY Christmas wreath: making the base

Perhaps the most traditional and easiest way to decorate a door in a New Year's way is a spruce wreath. Of course, you can buy ready-made wreath stencils. But it is much more interesting to make a wreath with your own hands.

So, in order to make a traditional New Year's wreath, you will need the following materials:

  • fir branches;
  • wire (it can be replaced with newspaper, paper, embroidery hoops);
  • small Christmas decorations;
  • New Year's tinsel;
  • beads;
  • bunches of rowan;
  • medium-sized tangerines, sweets;
  • ribbons.

The most important thing in the manufacture of any wreath is the creation of a solid base-frame. Of course, you can buy ready-made stencils. But, if you did not find them in the store, then there is nothing complicated in making the base. As a material, you can take a wire and, winding it several times in the shape of a circle, get a base. Other interesting wreath stencils are embroidery hoops, newsprint, and paper towels. An unusual, but troublesome option is to fasten the toilet paper sleeves together (see photo).

Do-it-yourself New Year's wreath: let's start decorating

The next step is the most interesting. This is the decoration of our base. The most traditional way is to attach spruce branches to it. If you used wire, then you can easily do this with it. If you used paper as the basis, then the branches can be attached with staples, threads, or the same metal wire. Once again, we glue the protruding spruce edges with glue. It is necessary that the entire base be covered with branches. Let's dry. And let's start decorating. And you will get a New Year's wreath, as in the photo. It can also be used on sliding door wardrobe.

Door Decorations for Valentine's Day

On this day, you can make a special decoration for front door. For this, hearts of different sizes, cut out of cardboard or fabric, and hung in the form fairy lights on the doorway (as in the photo).

A great idea could be a small embroidered by you personally decorative pillow in the shape of a heart with a declaration of love. It can be hung on a carnation on the front door. It will be not only a decoration, but also a gift to a loved one. As a temporary decoration, heart-shaped balloons can be used, which can be tied on sliding doors.

Decorations on the door for March 8

You can surprise your loved one on this day not only with a chic bouquet of fresh flowers. An original gift can be placed right on the door. This will also make a great decoration. If live tulips are attached around the metal wire, your hand does not rise, then you can use artificial flowers. Such an element of decor can be used not only for the door, but also for sliding wardrobe doors.

Doorway Decor

Do not disregard not only the door itself, but also the space around the doorway. A good New Year's decor can be made by attaching colored ribbons around it. And at the top of the doorway place such a festive element as a bow. On February 14, you can make an impromptu curtain of hearts, stringing them on long strings. And on March 8, the top of the doorway can be wrapped with a wreath of artificial flowers.

Door decor in case of damage

However, the need to decorate a door is not always associated with such pleasant chores as decoration for the new year. Sometimes such decor is caused by necessity. After all, the doors are short-lived and may eventually lose their original appearance.

If this option does not suit you, then mirrors can be used as decor. So, you can use acrylic panels with amalgam. And in this case, special attention should be paid to the preparation of the door. You can also use figured acrylic mirrors in the form of animals, flowers and other shapes. Such decoration will also look good on sliding doors. In a similar style, you can decorate the doorway. In addition, you can also decorate the cabinet doors.

Interior openings after repair remain open or are closed with old doors due to the high cost of new ones, however, you can always update the panels by making decoupage of the inner door with glass with your own hands.

What is decoupage and what is the value of this type of decor?

This art of decorating various objects has existed for more than 5 centuries, and it began in Venice. The masters of this city noted the high cost of Chinese household items, decorated with the finest inlay or carving, but since they did not know the technique, a skillful imitation was created. A pattern was applied to dishes or furniture, most often it was a thin fabric with some kind of pattern, and then the surface was covered with several layers of varnish. Sometimes their number reached 30 or more. Actually, in this technique, you can decorate anything, including glass. Varnishing will give it a matte finish, but at the same time the pattern will gain depth, and at the same time will not prevent the penetration of light.

Decoupled chest

Decoupage became widespread due to the fact that the cost of such products was significantly lower than that of Chinese household items. That is why this technique of drawing a picture with subsequent varnishing was at one time called the art of the poor (in Italian - arte povera). Over time, decoupage spread throughout the world, it is even known that even icons were made in this way in Russia. However, subsequently the technique was forgotten, using less and less, and its peak of popularity arose quite recently. Given the variety of modern materials, the use of such decor can have very wide possibilities. It should be especially noted that this art is accessible to everyone, it does not require special training and some complicated devices for doing it yourself.

Learning the basics of glass decoration

First of all, you should remember that you are making decor for yourself, and not for sale, and therefore it is not necessary to follow the path of the Venetian masters and apply dozens of layers of varnish, you can do with one. Sometimes you need to cover the drawing itself with a special transparent decoupage glue, in order to then carefully remove part of the paper base from the back and get the thinnest film with the image. This is required mainly when working with printer printouts on thick paper, which is difficult to apply to glass due to its opacity. Having impregnated with glue or varnish the top layer where the pattern is printed, you will be able to gently soak the paper on the back side.

Glass plate after decoupage

It is noteworthy that, unlike opaque surfaces, door glass decoupage can be either direct or reverse. The first option is standard - applying a napkin or other material with a pattern outwards, both wooden and metal household items are decorated in the same way. Another thing is the reverse application of the image, when the finishing layer is located behind the glass, turned to face it. In this case, the clarity of the pattern will remain even after applying varnish, which will cover the back side of the paper or other base attached to the door glass. However, this option cannot be applied to matte, translucent products.

There are several styles in which the decor is made, these are Victorian, Provence, country, the so-called shabby chic, which has existed since the late 80s, simplicity (using a minimum number of elements) and ethno. Actually, all these styles correspond to those used for interiors in residential premises, because it is necessary that the decorated object fit into the environment. Otherwise, as already mentioned, you will not need any special tools for work, everything you need to do decoupage on a glass door with your own hands is usually at home for everyone. The main thing is paper scissors, with which you will cut out the images you like. Different-sized brushes, a paper knife, emery, a sponge and a roller will come in handy. And how to apply all this - we will tell further.

How is glass decoupage done?

The simplest option is to use a special napkin or card that is applied to the glass, like a decal. In this case, you only need to prepare the surface by degreasing it with window cleaner and wiping it well with a clean paper towel. Then you should apply a special decoupage glue or any other suitable for glass to the desired area, that is, one that remains transparent after drying. Now we overlay the image, in a direct or reverse way, which we talked about earlier, and then carefully align the thin paper layer with a roller, at the same time squeezing out excess glue. With a cotton swab dipped in alcohol, we remove the glue that has come out, and if there are streaks, then we clean them off with a paper knife. And it remains to cover everything with acrylic varnish.

Decoupage on glass with your own hands

It is somewhat more difficult to work with images cut out from magazines or printed on a printer, since in this case the paper will be very thick. To avoid a pronounced transition from the surface to be decorated to the pattern, which is called a "ledge", you need to prepare a cut piece of paper. To do this, cover the front surface of the sheet with acrylic varnish, wait for it to absorb and dry, cover with a second layer and so on up to 5 times. Now we patiently wait for everything to completely harden, after which the drawing will be firmly stuck with a transparent film, and you can soak the back layer of paper in warm water. Next, carefully peel it off with a thin sandpaper or pumice stone, the pattern will remain on a thin varnish film, which we glue to the glass in the reverse way indicated above.

If the image is not too bright, it is recommended to create a background for it with, be sure to overlay it in 2 layers after gluing the picture (but in no case before). The glue must dry so that during the acrylic coating process the applied paper does not move. In this case, the decoration is carried out only in the opposite way, so that the picture is pressed against the glass, and its back side, along with the other surface, is painted. Use sponge brushes, they will create a beautiful texture, unlike fleecy ones, after which stains in the form of stripes often remain. After coating with acrylic paint, after it dries, apply several layers of acrylic varnish.

To apply several images with your own hands in a certain order, make markings on the opposite side of the glass with a washable felt-tip pen or glue a sheet of paper with risks with masking tape.

A few subtleties when decorating door glass with pictures

If you want to glue a picture from a fashionable glossy magazine, be sure to soak the page in warm water first, otherwise it will go in waves after smearing with glue. The same applies to printouts on thick printer paper. By the way, it is much easier to get high-quality and bright images on the door glass, using often even denser large-format photo paper for an inkjet printer. By covering it with a water-free varnish and drying it thoroughly, you can tear off most of the layers of the sheet in one movement, leaving only a thin face, with a pattern. If delamination is not observed, remove the fibers with pellets, after soaking the sheet with a varnished front surface.

Materials and tools for decoupage

If you use special decoupage cards or napkins, it is not necessary to pre-soak them, you can simply put liquid glue in a puddle, lightly dip it into it and, taking it out with tweezers with rounded or soft tips, put it on the glass. You can also do otherwise - lightly spray a napkin from a spray bottle, and then immediately attach it to the door glass, pre-lubricated with glue. Slightly moistened paper will smooth out well with a roller or brush and will not wrinkle afterwards, after drying. And, finally, one more trick from the masters: before you decoupage the door with a napkin with your own hands, gently smooth it, spray it with hairspray and then smooth it with an iron.

Attention - only water-based varnishes warp and wrinkle napkins and rice paper, so try to use undiluted formulations.

Separately, it is worth mentioning which adhesives are suitable for fixing the pattern on glass. In addition to the special ones, the acrylic varnish already mentioned above (only undiluted), paste, nail polish, regular glue stick, PVA, wallpaper paste (again, undiluted with water) and even egg white will suit you. All of them will give a thin and, most importantly, transparent layer, which is especially important when doing do-it-yourself decoupage using the reverse technique. Of the materials, in addition to those listed, you can also use wallpaper, postcards and photographs, having previously varnished them, you need to process them on the back with a thin sandpaper, carefully removing one layer of paper after another. Floral felt is also suitable for applying to a flat surface, but you need to use a large amount of glue for it.

And now let's talk a little about giving the decor a touch of antiquity, which is suitable for Victorian style, and for country, and especially for shabby chic. It is not difficult to artificially age the image itself; it is enough to briefly immerse it in a decoction of onion peel, tea or freshly brewed strong grain coffee. Another option: fill a wide and flat container with turpentine, stir in it a few drops of burnt sienna oil paint, and then immerse the drawing in the resulting solution for 2 seconds. It will turn out to be a kind of old parchment with an engraving. And, finally, also a fairly simple way - to dissolve a little bitumen in white spirit to get a composition that is pale in color, with which the already glued drawing is covered. An image applied in a direct way can be walked a couple of times with a metal brush, vertically and horizontally, this will give a cracking effect.
