Framing with molding. Decorative moldings on the wall or ceiling, molding under the wallpaper or on them, gluing options in the kitchen, corridor

First, let's give a definition of what a molding is. This is a fairly new, but already popular decoration with overhead strips and panels. With its help, you can even out corners, hide defects, as well as decorate window and door openings, create a frame for paintings or other objects, as well as separate wallpaper.

A large number of positive reviews have been written about them, so before using a specific type, you need to have an idea of the desired result.

To think that interior moldings are needed only for elegance is a delusion. They are often used to create original look window and door openings, framing wall niches, as well as ceilings. In large living rooms, they are also used in the decor of fireplaces. Due to its high decorative qualities, there are a huge variety of applications, it all depends only on the needs and imagination of the owners. But we're going to talk about wallpaper separation moldings.

Types of moldings

Moldings for separating wallpaper, depending on the materials from which they are made, are divided into:

  • gypsum (most often it is a stucco molding that carries an independent decorative load, fastened with alabaster);
  • polyurethane, which can be used as a cheaper and lighter alternative to gypsum, after installation it is advisable to paint them (attached with acrylic glue);
  • wooden (installed with nails or glue, usually have the simplest forms, but there are also complex reliefs);
  • foam (mounted on walls wallpaper glue, you can use PVA);
  • plastic and rubber (most often they have an adhesive layer and grooves for joining).

Wallpaper splitting options

In the presence of high ceilings in the room, a double ceiling molding line is often used. In this case, a wider one passes under the ceiling itself, some wallpapers are placed below (usually they use wallpapers that contrast with the main color of the room, but options using matching colors are also possible), limited by a narrower molding, and others are glued below, creating the main color of the interior. An example of wallpaper with molding in the interior is shown in the photo:

To create a soothing, cozy atmosphere in a bedroom setting for relaxation, it is recommended to use wallpaper in calm tones that do not contrast with each other. To separate the boundaries between them, polyurethane moldings are perfect.

In large apartments, in addition to the ceiling separation, wallpaper is often distinguished by a frame of molding on the wall. When creating such an interior, it is recommended to place lamps, mirrors, paintings, photographs, TV wall mounts, and other filling elements within the frames formed by the molding. Usually, the same wallpaper is placed in the frames. An example of dividing wallpaper in the interior in the photo below:

The division of wallpaper into sections limited by molding is used for large rooms. Looks most harmonious in the interior of studio apartments, if necessary, dividing one large area into several zones. Thus, all zones can be distinguished with a different look, as well as the color of the wallpaper, giving the interior a unique character.

Quite often, the wallpaper is separated by molding when creating the interior of banquet halls, restaurants, living rooms and other places for relaxation.

For a classic interior, the use of painted or gilded moldings will give any room a unique look and style. For example, dark moldings will complement an oriental-style interior.

Golden tones and light wallpaper as a background look great when decorating a room in a classic style.

Painted moldings should be used with care so that the interior does not look oversaturated, moreover, carefully select the wallpaper, they should be in harmony with the rest of the environment.

Installation of moldings

On most types of moldings there is protective film... It should not be removed before installation in order to preserve its decorative qualities and prevent damage. If used heavy wallpaper, it is impossible to glue even the lightest moldings on them. As a last resort, they need to be additionally fastened with dowel-nails. Interesting division combined wallpaper in the interior:

Before proceeding with the installation, it is necessary to carefully align the walls. It is much easier to mount decorative elements on flat surfaces. After that, it is necessary to carefully mark the installation sites. Installation of various types of molding has some peculiarities.

Polyurethane, plastic and foam

At the end of the marking, the material is cut under required sizes using a hacksaw or jigsaw. The miter box will help to cut off the corner parts ideally. It is better to cut foam products with a clerical knife. All the cut parts are applied to the designated places on the wallpaper, the joining of the corners is checked (all corner parts must fit perfectly together), for this, when cutting them, it is worth leaving a small margin of 2-3 mm.

Installation should start from corners, this applies to both ceiling and wall parts. To achieve the best adhesion to wallpaper and wall, it is necessary to sand the flat sides of all the parts obtained.

Using a spatula, an adhesive is applied to the pre-treated surface of the molding and glued to the places of all elements.

When gluing heavy moldings to the wallpaper, it is worth pre-drilling holes for the dowel nails in the wall and the attached elements, this will prevent the glued areas from slipping under their own weight. It is not necessary to drill the foam parts - they can simply crumble.

After the glue has dried, after about 6 hours, all joints and holes of the fasteners are putty.

If it was planned to highlight this interior detail with color, then painting should be done no earlier than a day after installation. It is imperative to take into account what the paint consists of, since some types can spoil the installed decor.

In addition, the painting of already installed panels is rather problematic, so this is done before mounting on the wall, otherwise the wallpaper can be damaged.

Gypsum

The most difficult material is gypsum. All parts are heavy, in addition, rather fragile, therefore, before proceeding with the installation, you must carefully check each for the presence of chips and cracks.

This material allows you to create beautiful, voluminous stucco molding, so it is used to create a rich interior. It is quite expensive, in addition, there are difficulties during installation, therefore it is not recommended to install it yourself, in order to avoid unnecessary costs in case of damage to the material.

Gypsum is extremely susceptible to moisture and therefore not suitable for damp rooms. The mounted parts of the molding are carefully adjusted to the installation site, for this they are sawn with a hacksaw. Then you need to make notches with a sharp tool (you can use a chisel), on the wall and the flat part of the elements to be installed. This is necessary for best fastening to the wall.

Before diluting the glue, the surfaces to be glued must be moistened with water. Then gypsum is diluted (can be replaced with alabaster), to which a little wood glue is added (1-3% of the total glue). Using a brush, adhesive is evenly applied to the wall and part and set in place. It is necessary to press the molding and move it a little along the wall, this will allow the glue to spread evenly and provide a stronger adhesion.

You need to hold the part pressed until it grabs, then carefully, using a spatula, remove the glue that has protruded along the edges. At the end of the installation, allow 2-3 hours for the best glue to set. If desired, you can paint acrylic paint... Gypsum moldings for dividing the wallpaper look very rich in the interior:

Wooden

Quite an expensive type of molding, usually used for fastening to wooden structures walls. When applying elements to the installation sites, they need to be cut to size.

Wood moldings are usually quite heavy, so when installing it is worth using not only glue, but also nails. Before installing in place, the flat surface is carefully coated with " liquid nails". Do not smear the glue too thickly, in order to avoid squeezing out excess during installation. Wooden moldings for separating wallpaper in the interior in the photo below:

Then the desired panel is pressed against the installation site and carefully nailed. The nail heads are bitten off and the nail shank is driven deeper and plastered. Installation on the already glued wallpaper is done in the same way, but when painting you should be careful, or paint them before installation.

Wooden moldings, especially from precious woods, are often coated with a colorless varnish that emphasizes the natural structure of the material and protects against moisture.

A short video will allow you to visually see the entire process of installing moldings:

Wall moldings transform the familiar cladding, add originality and special aesthetics to the interior, and visually adjust the proportions of the room.

Molding is the very element of the interior that is almost invisible from the outside, but can transform the atmosphere beyond recognition. Many do not pay attention to moldings at all, since they have an amazing ability to blend in with any interior, becoming a part of it. In our article today, we will tell you how you can use moldings in a variety of ways, both from a practical and a decorative point of view. An interior designer will help us with this. Svetlana Yurkova.

"Moldings are a decorative element of classic interiors that decorate the walls and create an attractive architecture on them." - S. Yu.

1. Zoning

For spacious rooms without partitions, for example, studio apartments, moldings will be an excellent solution for zoning space. You do not have to erect walls, put screens or try to fix the curtain to the floor: with the help of molding, the delimitation of space is carried out visually, so you do not need to sacrifice precious meters. Also this perfect solution for the nursery, especially with children of different sexes.

2. Correction of space

Moldings will help both expand and narrow the room, in addition, by playing with different shapes, you can visually correct many of the imperfections in the layout. It is important to correctly match the shape and size of the molding - in this case, you can achieve really significant results even in the most hopeless space.

"Moldings are already attached to finished walls in the form of rectangular blocks with which you can adjust the volume of the room. So, vertical domed moldings will stretch the space, and a wide plinth at the ceiling will make the room wider. " - S. Yu.

3. Masking defects

The ideal interior in your imagination and what you get in reality are often two big differences. If the joy of a dream come true is darkened by annoying little things, like cracks on the wall or too noticeable "joints" on the wallpaper, then moldings will come to your aid again.

Even if the flaws are too big, then a few blocks of panels in combination with decorative details can divert attention to themselves and make sure that the flaws are not at least striking.

4. Emphasis

An accent wall with moldings is a great way to discreetly decorate a room without overloading it. A similar choice is a good idea for both classic interior and for modern solutions in the spirit of minimalism.

A similar accent wall made of moldings can be additionally decorated with paintings, fabric or even painting. It is preferable to make it the centerpiece of the room.

5. Decor

Decorating the space is one of the main functions of the molding, however, as you already understood, it is far from the only one. With the help of moldings, you can not only emphasize design features, but also create a unique, unlike anything else interior. Molding is able to add both sophistication and brutality to a room - it all depends on what you will combine it with, as well as on curly variations.

“Moldings are used to decorate not only walls, but also ceilings and doorways. However, it is so easy to overwhelm the space. As a small decorative trick, you can decorate the doors with moldings and fix the skirting board to the ceiling. It is necessary that the ornament and texture of the molding are combined with general style rooms ". - S. Yu.

When decorating walls and ceilings in a house, we usually use traditional materials: decorative panels, plaster, as well as wallpaper and paint. However, with a creative approach to the problem, moldings are already used. These seemingly unremarkable and unprepossessing building products can turn even the most inexpressive corners of the house into an original piece of architecture. What are moldings, where can they be used, what materials are they made of and how to use them in the interior to separate the wallpaper?

Moldings and their types: gypsum, polyurethane, foam, etc.

The molding is an overhead decorative element that resembles a raised strip. Your curly or flat view, the product can cover the joint seams between finishing materials or at the same time be beautiful decor in the interior. In addition, with the help of moldings, you can zone the walls and give individuality to the premises. They visually expand the rooms and raise the ceilings.

In the manufacture of decorative elements, quite a variety of materials are used today, which determines their feature and area of use:

  • Gypsum moldings are wide and massive, have the form of stucco moldings and are used to decorate interiors and facades of buildings. They also decorate the upper part of buildings, even despite the significant mass of gypsum moldings.
  • Today, gypsum products are used very rarely, since new technologies have entered the market that imitate any materials and allow you to create any forms.

  • Wooden moldings are used to decorate the walls of buildings made of the same material. When using such decor as cornices and trims under the roof, the moldings are decorated with carvings for different styles.
  • Wooden moldings are not suitable for exterior walls and bathrooms.

  • Metal moldings. Making out modern interiors in high-tech style, entrances and facades of houses usually use such decor. It is distinguished by restraint and has a beautiful relief and pattern.
  • Polyurethane moldings. Among other types of products, this is the most popular material that looks more advantageous on the ceiling. It is wear-resistant and durable, and the relief ornaments on its surface are more pronounced and clear.
  • Plaster. Thanks to plaster moldings, you can create a voluminous, beautiful stucco... You should not install the product yourself, as there are difficulties.
  • Styrofoam moldings. Most cheap option similar products that do not mix well with varnish, detergents and solvents.
  • Marble moldings are used in the decoration of buildings and in interiors, which are aimed at creating various historical styles, where it is impossible to use modern technologies... Marble moldings look great, but they are not a popular product for ordinary apartments.
  • Name of moldings Advantages Flaws
    GypsumBeautiful, ubiquitous useDifficult to install, heavy, fragile, does not tolerate moisture
    WoodenPleasant appearance, environmental friendliness, easy processingHigh cost, moisture instability
    MetallicStrength, used for finishing thresholds or stepsThe need for additional mount
    PolyurethaneResistance to damage and temperature extremes, plasticity, reasonable price, durabilityWhen burning, they emit corrosive harmful smoke. Do not withstand strong mechanical stress
    FoamResistance to moisture, lightness, low weight, low price and easy installationInsufficient strength and service life, easily damaged, poorly joined, putty and painted
    MarbleGreat appearanceHeavy weight, high cost, not commercially available
    PlasticLightweight, bendable, not subject to decay, light weightThey break during installation, are afraid of open fire, emit harmful substances

    Also, moldings differ in purpose:

  • Ceiling products are designed to create a neat joint between the ceiling and the wall. There are 2 types: complex and simple, and they are made with stucco and different patterns. Their width can be different depending on the style of the interior. For high premises use wide moldings, in small ones - simpler variations.
  • Floor - moldings are used to hide the seams between the walls and the floor.
  • Wall-mounted - combine products with wallpaper or simply lay on the walls, thereby creating a frame or pattern in the required area. Also, thanks to the wall moldings, you can create decoration in the room on the wall surface. They come in a variety of lengths, colors and shapes.
  • Arched and door products are used to mask the joints between the door frame and the wall. They are curly, rectangular, and also oval. Such products hide the flaws of the arch or just for decoration.
  • Furniture products are used to decorate various joinery products, as well as upholstered and cabinet furniture. There are 3 types: metallized, textured, and smooth.
  • Moldings in a modern interior

    Moldings also differ in their location:

  • Embossed products are capable of partially or completely covering ceilings or walls;
  • Moldings that cross a particular area;
  • Framing interior details - openings of windows or doors, stoves or fireplaces, paintings or mirrors;
  • At the seams between the various surfaces of the room.
  • In this case, the goals when using moldings can be varied. So, for example, with their help, you can hide wall and ceiling defects, irregularities, cracks, and also visually correct the imperfections in the geometry of the room.

    Embossed moldings and gold frames give the room an atmosphere of luxury, antiquity or renaissance. Dark moldings will help make the medieval style. Light shades of products are perfect for Provence and Country style. Grey colour, "Metallic" and "chrome" can become part of high-tech design.

    Thanks to products that resemble platbands and photo frames, you can focus on especially important details in the interior. Pseudo-columns can be used to zone the rooms of the apartment - studio. Great trick in creating unique interior with the help of moldings - this is the creation of "pseudo-panels". They visually divide the area of the walls and ceiling, after which they are painted in various colors.

    When using moldings, follow these rules:

  • Use wide and large pieces in large spaces, and many ornate details are welcome. A small molding will not look more than 50 squares in a room, and stucco molding with patterns will simply "crush" a small room.
  • You cannot install wide ceiling products in rooms with low ceilings, since light moldings will become more appropriate here.
  • The proportions of the room should correspond to the molding, for example, with a low and wide room, elements that "look" upwards are installed: panels, door trims, and so on. This will help to visually "raise" the ceiling.
  • In addition to the size and dimensions of the room, take into account the number of different interior items in it. If there is a lot of furniture in the room, then do not install luxurious moldings that will not harmonize the interior.
  • Application for separating wallpaper

    Before you start zoning a room and wallpapering it, pay attention to the moldings, since the type of interior that is being designed depends on them.

  • White moldings on dark-colored walls look great. They are used to decorate pieces of furniture, ceilings, doorways and wall surfaces. An identical combination of shades of moldings and finishes is also a winning option.
  • Light colored planks work well in a room where you can accentuate family photos and paintings. These products are also suitable for highlighting different areas, such as a hookah bar.
  • Colored decorative elements are used to create an unusual interior.
  • With high ceilings in the room, a double line of moldings is often used - a wide strip is glued end-to-end to the ceiling, behind it there are colored wallpapers, the boundaries of which are determined by a narrower decorative element. The main shade of the interior is created by the wallpaper, which is glued below.

    To create a comfortable atmosphere in the room, it is worth using several types of wallpaper in soft colors. The borders between them are separated by a polyurethane molding.

    Wallpaper in large rooms, in addition to the separation between the ceiling, they are often distinguished by a frame on the wall with the help of moldings. When creating such an interior, it is recommended to hang lamps, paintings, family photos, mirrors or other filling details within the framework. Also, within the framework, you can glue wallpaper in colors with the general interior.

    In rooms of a large area, wallpaper can be divided into sections, which are limited to molding. Such decor looks great in the design of a studio apartment, when there is a need to divide one area into different zones, thereby giving the interior individuality. In cafes, restaurants and banquet halls, the wallpaper is also separated by moldings in a similar way.

    For a classic interior, gilded decorative strips are suitable, giving the room a unique look. In the interior of the oriental style, moldings are often used. dark colors that complement the interior.

    With light wallpaper, cream, beige or golden palette of the room, moldings of similar shades are excellently combined, however, apply them carefully so as not to make the interior too bright and oversaturated.

    Decorating walls and ceilings in the living room, bedroom and other rooms

    Wall and ceiling moldings are only used if there is a need to divide it into zones or break up an unattractive large surface into beautiful sections. Then each of them, if desired, can be painted in the desired shade, pasted over with wallpaper, highlight the texture or hang pictures.

    Notable decor

    Moldings are decor that should stand out, so a thin strip of plank on the seam between the wall and the ceiling will not add beauty to the interior. But you still can't do without it. A low ceiling will not visually lower the wide molding down, but you will get a greater effect if you paint the product in the required shade.

    Play of colors

    The molding of the same color may not always fit the snow-white walls and ceiling. In this case, you can break the rules. Emphasize the decorative element by highlighting it in color and size. Dark molding will make light interior laconic and strict, but it should contain dark objects (accessories, frames).

    Functionality

    Ceiling moldings can hide inexpressive curtain rods. And the lamps that you hide under the ceiling behind the cornice will create diffused light.

    In a room with a flat ceiling and walls, wall panels are not used, since the best effect will be created by correctly selected moldings. The thin strips are attached to the wall in a regular rectangle.

    With the help of moldings, you can create themed images, ornaments or whimsical designs on the ceiling and walls. They are also used to decorate multi-level ceilings or create additional volume.

    Framing windows and doors with moldings

    An excellent example of the appropriate and correct application of moldings is the design of window and door openings. Often, openings are made pompously and pretentiously, but today moderate decoration with moldings has come into fashion. Ordinary is the design of windows and doors with products with different profiles and several of their types. Thanks to this, you will create additional volume and emphasize the architecture of doors and windows.

    When visually expanding the openings of windows and doors, moldings are also used, which are installed around the perimeter and painted to match the frame. Among other things, they will make the opening expressive and hide the joining seams between the window and door frame and a wall. Multicolored, carved, wooden or self made moldings will give the window and doors a unique look. They can also be curly and even, but must match the style of the window.

    Highlighting individual elements

    Moldings only initially seem monotonous and boring, but the right approach, due enthusiasm and imagination will help transform every detail in the interior. These can be collages, paintings, photographs, wallpaper or sections of walls.

    Painted moldings transform the frame from an antiquated mirror into an updated piece of room decor. Embossed moldings are suitable for such purposes, not smooth moldings. They are also used to decorate false fireplaces and electric fireplaces.

    Decorative panels and paintings will look much more beautiful if they are placed in the moldings. A good solution is to create frames with the wallpaper inside that is different in color. Mirrors can be installed in the baguettes, which will make the interior interesting.

    Moldings are also used to frame arches, stairs and furniture, since without them it would be extremely difficult to design such large-scale structures.

    The use of moldings in the interior

    Moldings are an integral part of the interior in a classic style, which add elegance and solemnity to the room. However, in modern houses these decorative elements were used as decorations and, in parallel, as a functional item:

  • TV frame;
  • Hinged shelf;
  • Photo stand;
  • Shelf for books;
  • Shoe holder.
  • It is especially convenient to use moldings for shoes with heels - fix several strips in one row on the wall. Thanks to this, you will make the interior more attractive and be able to use the stand as intended. Also, moldings can be used as bookshelves... In this case, take care of a secure mount.

    For hanging shelves, wide moldings are bought, which are installed in the bathroom, and they serve as a stand for hygiene items.

    Moldings in various interior styles

    For finishing different surfaces in a room decorated in one style or another, the same types of curly or embossed moldings can be used, but there are situations when it is necessary to select a certain version of their pattern.

  • Baroque - in this style, decorative moldings are usually used that have a floral embossed ornament. With their help, they create a general picture in the design of the room. Planks can be easily tinted in different shades. In this style, a light palette of moldings should prevail, so think about purchasing gilded, beige, cream or white stucco moldings. They should be strictly symmetrical to the center of the ceiling and be decorated with a chic rosette under the chandelier.
  • Provence with its warm flowers provides comfort in the room, conducive to relaxation and pleasant rest. Creative individual compositions are applicable in it, so you can use moldings that are simple in shape and with an elementary relief. At the same time, they are painted in shades that are in harmony with the main colors in the design of the room. This direction involves framing with moldings not the main wall area, but different joints. It is also possible to combine them in different colors, shapes and widths.
  • The classic style is characterized by high ceilings with arched windows. Also, carved interior decoration and tinted wood furniture are inherent in this style. Therefore, it is necessary to select the reliefs of moldings according to the same principle.
  • V scandinavian style moldings are used to decorate the floor, ceiling, and window openings and arches. At the same time, the planks cannot be the main element, but only an auxiliary one, which should emphasize the neatness of the interior of the entire room. The moldings are covered with shades that are close to the main color of the room design.
  • In the Mediterranean style, moldings are used in all possible variations with a clear emphasis on the surface. This style also involves framing ceilings, door openings and arches in light colors. This will significantly help to visually expand the area of the room.
