Paint for wooden stairs. We paint a wooden staircase ourselves

At first glance, painting the stairs is nothing complicated - pick up a brush and paint. But in order for the design to serve as an interior decoration and remain beautiful for as long as possible, it is necessary to competently approach the choice of coating and apply it correctly. Therefore, further we want to tell you how to paint a pine staircase in a house, and how to do it right.

All existing paints that can be used for stairs are conventionally divided into two types:

  1. covering- cover the tree with an opaque film of a certain color, as a result of which its natural pattern is hidden;

  1. Toning- these coatings preserve the pattern of the wood, but at the same time give the wood a certain color.

It must be said that absolutely transparent coatings are also used for, i.e. varnishes. Of course, our job is to paint the stairs, not varnish them. But, varnishes are often applied over the paint, which allows you to protect it from external influences and give it a deeper color.

Note! In some cases, the use of varnish is simply necessary, for example, if the stairs are covered with stain.

Choosing covering paints by composition

First of all, we note that pine does not have any features that greatly distinguish it from other types of wood. Therefore, when choosing how to paint a pine staircase, all existing wood paints can be considered as an option.

The most common and suitable for our purposes are the following compositions:

  • Alkyd and alkyd-urethane;
  • polyurethane;
  • Water-dispersion;
  • Oil.

Alkyd and alkyd-urethane

These paints are made on the basis of alkyd resins. Alkyd-urethane coatings also contain polyurethane resins, which, according to the manufacturers of paints and varnishes (hereinafter referred to as LKM), improve the basic qualities of the paint.

True, in practice, the properties of the coating depend more on the quality of the alkyd paint, and not on the presence or absence of polyurethane resins in its composition. In other words, if you get a good, expensive alkyd paint from well-known manufacturer, then it will be better than cheap alkyd-urethane.

Note! All alkyd coatings contain organic solvents, as a result of which they have a pungent and toxic odor. Of course, after drying, this smell disappears.

Of the features of these compositions, the following points can be distinguished:

  • They fit well on the surface and form an even glossy or matte film;
  • Possess saturated color;
  • Resistant to moisture detergents and abrasion. Therefore, they can be used for painting steps and landings.

Of the minuses, one can single out the fact that over time these compounds fade in the sun and begin to crack. But, much, as we have said, depends on the quality of the coating. Therefore, if you do not save, the coating will last a long time.

In general, we can say that most often the coloring of pine stairs is carried out with these paints. Therefore, if you do not have any special requirements for paintwork, for example, saving a tree pattern, then you can stop there.

Polyurethane

If you are looking for how to paint a staircase in a pine house so that you can forget about this procedure for many years, use polyurethane paint. It is a two-component coating, therefore it belongs to professional coatings.

Among the advantages of polyurethane paints, the following points can be distinguished:

  • Resistance to mechanical stress, including abrasion;
  • Resistance to UV radiation;
  • Excellent adhesion;
  • Durability;
  • It fits well on the surface, forming an even film;
  • Has rich color.

The disadvantages include a fairly high price. In addition, as we have already said, the coating is two-component, i.e. before use, the paint components must be mixed in certain proportions, so it is not as convenient to use as ready-made one-component formulations.

Water-dispersion

These paints and varnishes are made on the basis of acrylate resins and their modifications. The most main feature of these coatings lies in the fact that they do not contain organic solvents, unlike all of the above analogues. These coatings represent an aqueous dispersion failure.

In other words, undissolved polymer particles form a suspension in water. After applying the paint to the surface, the water evaporates, and the acrylate resins polymerize and form a film on the surface, which can be either water-soluble or waterproof, depending on the type of paint.

Advice! For stairs, it is necessary to use waterproof paint, as the structure will often be subjected to wet cleaning.

Among the features of these coatings, the following points can be distinguished:

  • Form on the surface thin film, as a result of which they can preserve the texture of the tree, even if it is weakly expressed, not to mention brushing;
  • Dries quickly. As soon as the water evaporates, the coating immediately polymerizes;
  • Has no smell.

Disadvantages of water-dispersion coatings also exist:

  1. Abrasion resistance;
  2. High cost, especially for high-quality waterproof paints.

Therefore, water-dispersion compositions are not very suitable for painting steps and landings. Of course, you can paint with them, but you will have to update the coating a little more often than in the case of using other analogs described above.

Oily

These colors are recent times are rarely used, since their properties are significantly inferior to more modern coatings, which we have already talked about. Visually, they resemble alkyd paints, but they are inferior to them in terms of durability.

Their main advantage is their low cost. Therefore, if you want to restore the stairs with your own hands with minimal cost, for example, in the country, you can use and oil paint.

Choosing tinted paints

Tinting paints can be divided into two types:

  1. impregnation;
  2. Azure.

Impregnation

Impregnations include stains and other compounds that, unlike paints, do not form a film on the surface, but are absorbed into the structure of the tree, coloring the fibers.

According to the method of application of impregnation, it can be conditionally divided into two types:

  • Finishing- do not require additional coverage. These include all kinds of compositions based on wax and oil;
  • Requiring additional coverage- a transparent varnish is usually applied over such impregnations. Such compositions include stains.

Separately, it should be said about modern stains, which allow you to reliably imitate various types of wood. With their help, you can turn pine into mahogany or, for example, bleached oak.

Azure

Azures, or glazing paints, are a composition based on varnish and pigments. In other words, these are translucent paints.

Since these coatings have the same composition as covering paints, they also have the same properties. Therefore, there is nothing more to say about them.

Lucky

Regarding the choice of transparent coatings, optimal solution is parquet varnish. It is resistant to abrasion, is not afraid of washing and exposure to sunlight.

You can also use yacht varnish. Unlike parquet, it can be used both indoors and outdoors.

In other words, the lacquer is weather resistant and low temperature. Therefore, for the processing of stairs in country houses that are visited seasonally or from time to time, it is even more preferable than the parquet counterpart.

Painting technology

So, we figured out the types of paintwork materials. Now let's look at how to properly paint a pine staircase. After all, if you perform this procedure in violation of technology, even the most expensive and high-quality paint will not give the desired result.

As we have already said, pine does not have any features in terms of applying coatings. Therefore, the work is carried out in the same way as painting stairs made of larch, spruce, oak or any other species.

It includes several stages:

  • Preparation of working equipment;
  • Stair preparation;
  • Painting.

Preparation of work equipment

In addition to the paint itself, you need to prepare the following materials:

  • putty on wood;
  • masking tape;
  • Plastic wrap or newspapers;
  • Wash.

Note! If you have building hair dryer, no rinsing is required.

You will also need some tools:

  • Paint brush and roller;
  • Roller tray;
  • Putty knife;
  • Sandpaper;
  • grinder;
  • Vacuum cleaner.

Stair preparation

Before you paint a pine staircase, you need to prepare it. Please note that the quality of painting depends on the preparation, so take this step responsibly.

Preparation involves the following steps:

Illustrations Actions

Cover the floor around the stairs with plastic or paper.

Seal the places where the stairs adjoin the wall with masking tape so as not to stain the walls during work.

If you are going to paint a staircase that has already been in use, it is probably covered with old varnish or paint. It is desirable to remove this coating completely.

Erase it sandpaper very hard and long, so it's better to use:

  • building hair dryer;
  • grinder;
  • wash.

A hair dryer allows you to heat the coating and then easily remove it with a spatula.

The wash is applied to the surface for a while and dissolves the old paint, after which it is also removed with a spatula.

Note! Washer is a toxic acid, so be careful when handling it.

If you are sure that old paint securely adheres to the base and will not begin to peel off in the near future, just rub it with sandpaper until a matte surface appears.

All cracks on the surface of the product, as well as gaps between parts and chips must be filled with putty. Apply the composition with a narrow spatula and level the surface.

After the putty has hardened, do not forget to clean it with the same spatula or sandpaper with a fine abrasive.

Advice! If you plan to paint the stairs with a translucent composition, match the putty to the color of the paint. Otherwise, the putty area will be conspicuous.

Upon completion of the preparatory work, be sure to vacuum all surfaces of the stairs, as dust and small debris can cancel out all the work done.

Advice! Upon completion of the preparatory work, try to immediately start painting so that the surface does not have time to become covered with dust.

Painting

Instructions for painting the stairs are as follows:

Illustrations Actions

Work should begin with the preparation of LKM. Too thick paint must be diluted with a solvent that is selected individually for the type of paint, for example, water-dispersion paints are diluted with clean water.

Then the composition must be thoroughly mixed.

To give the coating a certain color or shade, add color to it. Keep in mind that not all colors can be tinted. Manufacturers usually report this possibility on the packaging.

Color, like a solvent, is selected individually.

Pour the finished paint in a small amount into a flat container.

The preparation of varnish is carried out in exactly the same way.

Start painting with railings. Most often, a clear varnish is used for railings.

Apply it with a brush in a thin even layer. Then wait for it to dry completely and repeat the procedure again.

When the railings are painted, proceed to the rest of the surfaces of the stairs. Paint the design from top to bottom.

Start by painting large areas with a roller. Dip the tool in the paint and squeeze lightly to keep the paint from dripping. Then roll out the roller on the surface.

Treat hard-to-reach areas with a paint brush. In this manner, paint the stairs completely. After the coating has hardened, repeat the procedure at least one more time.

If you are using water-dispersion paint, it is advisable to apply it in three layers.

It must be said that the impregnation technique is somewhat different from regular painting, since the composition is not just applied, but rubbed into the surface. Therefore, when applying it, you need to make multiple circular and longitudinal movements. With ordinary painting, you need to try, on the contrary, not to run the tool twice over the painted surface.

Output

That's all we wanted to tell you about how to paint a pine staircase with your own hands, and how to do it right, so that the result, as they say, "pleasing to the eye." Finally, be sure to watch the video in this article and thereby consolidate the information received.

In many cottages and country houses, the owners install wooden stairs. Although wood is very popular and universal material for construction, but it also has disadvantages. If it was not properly processed, then the product will not last long. Therefore, you need to make sure that painting a wooden staircase with your own hands brings it not only aesthetics, but also reliability.

How to paint the stairs in the house

Painted wooden staircase

Staircase in the process of painting

When choosing a method for processing stairs, you need to take into account the type of wood from which it is made, as well as its quality. The lacquered design emphasizes the beauty of the natural material. But this effect will be achieved if a high quality array was used.

Many manufacturers and customers put forward the long service life and durability of the stairs, and its decorative qualities are not the best. leading role. If an unpainted staircase has visual imperfections, it is best to mask them with paint.

Modern manufacturers offer a wide variety of types of coatings. choose the most best option required considering the following factors:

  • If varnishing of a wooden staircase was chosen, then it should be matte or semi-matte. Glossy varnish will lose its luster on the railings and in the center of the steps, because these places are under high stress and will look untidy.
  • If stains are used before coating the stairs with a colorless varnish, then it should be borne in mind that sometimes they greatly darken the natural shade of the wood, so they first cover a small sample area with a stain.
  • If a wooden staircase is covered with paint, then you should choose a composition based on natural drying oil, but for internal structures it can also be synthetic.

Once you have decided how to paint the wooden stairs in the house, you need to find out if it will be used in the painting process. It is advisable not to use it until the composition dries. If this is not possible, then the stairs are painted through the step. Thanks to this method, you can move around the house. But if painting is done in two stages, people going up to the second floor may forget that half of the steps have not yet dried.

Work with varnish should only take place in clean room otherwise dust will settle on the treated surface. You also need to take care of the protection of hands and respiratory organs, because the composition emits toxic compounds.

Also, many people think about how to paint a wooden staircase with their own hands: before assembly or in ready-made. In a new house, it is usually painted before installation. This will allow you to completely paint over even hard-to-reach places.

Do-it-yourself painting the stairs will be more convenient if you prepare in advance the right tools and materials. For this you need:

  • suitable coloring agent;
  • protective gloves;
  • brush, roller or spray gun;
  • masking tape that allows you to paint the stairs neatly; it is also used to create ornaments.

Hue Determination Approaches

It is important to decide on the color in which you plan to paint the structure. For this, two approaches are used.

Standard

Stair color and floor covering on the first or second floor, a little darker than the design of the room. In this case, it is better to avoid very dark shades. universal color solution for floors and stairs made of wood, brown is considered, which can be used to paint surfaces in any interior.

designer

Allows you to get away from the usual solutions and create a unique staircase in the house. Here you can safely use various colors and ways of decor, considering the examples in the photo.

The procedure for painting stairs

The surface must be prepared before painting. To do this, putty is applied to surface defects, sanded and treated with a primer layer, as shown in the video. After grinding, wait two days until the fibers straighten out so that they can be easily removed during the second grinding. Primer and paint must match. If varnish is used, then a primer is not needed.

To properly paint a wooden staircase to the second floor, you need to work on the following steps.

  • It is advisable to start from the top step, heading down. Such convenient solution helps to control the quality of painting. Painting the structure starting from the bottom is rational if the room has access only to top level. It could be the stairs to the basement.
  • If the paint has a thick structure, then it is more convenient to use a bristle round brush. Diluted liquid paint can be applied with a flat soft object. A roller will also allow you to get a high-quality coating.
  • Painting a wooden staircase can occur across and along. But last layer will only be applied correctly along the wood structure, so that the quality of processing is high and the surface has a beautiful appearance.

After finishing the work, it is enough to wait until the painted staircase dries, and it can be used. Many argue that increasing the drying time indicated by the manufacturer helps to achieve a lasting result. After all, this is influenced by indoor conditions, for example, temperature, humidity.

If you are the owner two-story house, you will have to take care of the presence of a stationary ladder. Such a design may also be needed for the attic. Wooden structures are popular and successful. It's nice to climb them - no unpleasant sound, which is present when climbing metal steps.

Bribes many environmental Safety material. It is no secret that such designs have an acceptable cost. If pick up correct composition for processing, you can forget about some of the disadvantages of wood - fire hazard and wear resistance. Specialists in painting and manufacturing wooden stairs for a private house and summer cottage will help you with this nn-lestnica.ru

Wooden stairs look stylish and cozy, but many people are afraid that the constant mechanical impact is not in the best way affect the aesthetic qualities of the structure.

Most problems can be avoided if you choose the right stair covering for your home. Reliable protection will protect the steps from excessive moisture and an abundance of sunlight. What means can perform a protective function? This:

  • Paints;
  • Lucky;
  • Mordants;
  • Oil;
  • Pastes.

Before you go to the hardware store, it is better to study the following questions:

Do rainfall get on the stairs located on the street (for such steps, you will need funds endowed with water-repellent properties)?

Does direct sunlight fall on the structure. Stairs exposed to UV light require special formulations that can protect them from harmful effects.

Is it possible to remove people from the premises after applying the composition.

Paints

If you are interested in the specified coating for the steps of the stairs in the house, you should choose a tool with an eye on the design of the room and the attributes surrounding the building.

It is better to pay attention to oil paint: drying oil penetrates deep into the wood and protects the tree from negative impacts as much as possible. The paint will become ideal option in the event that there are cracks and other visual imperfections on the steps, they can easily be “hidden” behind an attractive color composition.

Lucky

Do not know how to cover the steps of a wooden staircase in a house without spoiling the natural beauty of the material?

Pay attention to varnishes. They only emphasize the dignity of the texture of wood and do not hide the beauty of the breed.

To pick up ideal remedy, you need to know what kind of wood was used in the production of wood. The following products are widely presented in stores:

Oil varnishes are made on the basis of vegetable oils, artificial and natural resins are added to the composition. When natural resin interacts with sandarac and shellac, a product with a concentration of 30-45% is obtained. Thanks to the property of alcohol to quickly weather, we get a coating that does not adversely affect the lower layers.

Such varnishes have a drawback - a low indicator of moisture resistance.

Indoor and outdoor stairs are often treated with alkyd varnishes.

Nitrocellulose varnishes are suitable for pine structures with a high resin content. This varnish quickly turns into a film that protects the pine steps from all sorts of dirt.

Polyester varnishes are often used, which form a shiny film on the surface of the product.

Polyurethane varnishes, characterized by high cost, are characterized by a long service life.

How to paint a wooden staircase to the second floor with your own hands?

When choosing this type protective equipment you need to consider the type of wood. From conifers, it is better to cover with opaque varnish products. Oak, beech, ash are best treated with transparent compositions - this way you emphasize the external charm of the material.

  1. It is better to apply the composition to the disassembled object.
  2. It is worth remembering that stair varnishes differ from parquet counterparts in greater density.
  3. Experts advise choosing semi-matte varieties of varnish - they show less signs of wear.
  4. If you want to add a touch of depth to the wood, it is wise to use wood stain instead of colored varnish.

wood stain

Are you wondering how to cover a wooden staircase in a house without breaking the budget? Choose a stain that has antiseptic and fire-fighting properties. Often it is used in tandem with varnish; in this case, it is worth making sure that these 2 types of coatings are well compatible (these data are in the product instructions, they will be prompted by a consultant in the construction department).

The following products are distinguished:

  • Wood stains on water based available in several forms: dry and liquid. When buying a dry stain, you can independently adjust the concentration. Usually, after applying the product, they pass over the surface with sandpaper in order to prevent swelling.
  • Alcohol stains are fast drying.
  • Solvent-based stain has a drawback - an unpleasant odor appears when applied.
  • Acrylic and wax-based stains are appreciated by professionals and novice users - they are easy to apply, they just dry.
  • Several functions combine alkyd-based stains.

Oils

This product is based on wax and the following types of natural ingredients:

  • Sunflower;
  • Linen;
  • Jojoba oil;
  • Beeswax;
  • Candelline wax;
  • Carnauba wax.

Today, oil successfully competes with varnishes: it penetrates deep into wood, sets off the external advantages of the material and copes well with protective functions.

Due to the bactericidal properties of the oil, fungi do not appear on the stairs.

Impregnation benefits:

  • Water-repellent characteristics;
  • Ease of application;
  • Extends the service life of steps;
  • Has no unpleasant smell.

Paste

An unconventional coating option is a paste consisting of beeswax and linseed oil. Depending on the type of wood, a paste of different density is used: for hard wood, use large quantity linseed oil.

Have you decided how to cover the wooden stairs?

Now you need to properly plan the upcoming work.

It can be divided into the following steps:

  • Preparatory work;
  • painting process;
  • Finish coating.

At the initial stage, the tree is polished, all visible flaws are removed. The polishing process takes several days. Then there is a general cleaning. Then the product is primed, sometimes in several layers. It is good if you have an electric or pneumatic tool, otherwise you will have to use a brush to paint.

What color to choose? If you have a pine staircase, the choice is wide, ranging from milky white to brown.

In this article, we answered the question of how to cover wooden steps stairs.

As you can see, the choice of coating is determined by a combination of different factors: features of the location of the structure; type of wood, financial capabilities, features of the interior of the room. Hardware stores offer a wide range of products to enhance the aesthetic properties and extend the life of the structure. If you do not get lost in the specified variety and carry out the painting procedure in accordance with all the rules, the staircase will delight you for a long time.

Wood painting

This is the most common material used on stairs.

The tree is beautiful, but bizarre in its own way. It must be protected from moisture, all microorganisms, aggressive agents and other effects. There are two options for finishing - to emphasize the natural structure or to order a color with a different color.

It all depends on the condition of the tree and your desires.

You can use:

  • oils with hard wax, which will make the shadows deeper and more saturated, they will retain the ability to breathe and at the same time give surface strength, resistance to moisture, aggressive agents and mechanical stress;
  • transparent varnishes (water-based polyurethane, waterproof coatings), recommended for stairs with high loads.

    They also enhance the natural beauty of wood and are highly resistant to wear;

  • stains, colored varnishes, toning, depilation - ways to change the natural color of the product. Depending on the composition, the surface can create shades with various effects, including imitation of natural (for example, bleached wood, which was once popular in Moscow).

    The disadvantage of this method is the difficulty of reconstruction.

The cost of varnishing wooden stairs depends on the materials used and the complexity of the work.

Making a color choice for a wooden staircase

Adding charm to the interior of any home is not complete without careful selection. colors wooden stairs. Them appearance creates a feeling of respectability and luxury, combined with practicality. Often it is the color scheme that determines the aesthetic effect produced by the lifting structure in general, and the style of the interior in particular.

How to choose a shade

brown stair steps

The combination of white and brown in a classic staircase

The color of the wooden stairs to the second floor inside each house directly depends on the following factors:

Deciding what color to paint a wooden staircase should be in accordance with some important aspects.

The difficulty in choosing a particular shade is to determine the predominant type of lighting in the room. For example, in the absence of natural illumination, the color of the tree is not able to fully spread to the walls of the room, so their saturated variations look much darker in this case. Having decided in advance on this point, you can avoid repeated painting work further.

To create the most non-standard visual effect, many other subtleties of choice are also used.

A harmonious combination of color characteristics of stairs and doors is the second prerequisite for creating an elegant and pleasant interior.

The vintage style of the construction involves whitening the steps and emphasizing the wooden texture with this. Stair color in wooden house, made in dark oak tones, gives elitism to the entire interior of the room, but it is worth considering the impossibility of its further clarification. The stain penetrates the wood so deeply that it is almost impossible to remove it.

Toning of coniferous stairs in most cases turns out to be superfluous.

Ideas and ways to paint the stairs in the house to the second floor

After all, it hides an already beautiful texture. In light shades, you can paint stairwells, narrow and dark areas. So you can dispel the gloom of the room. Spacious halls require bold, unconventional experimentation. Bright warm tones become the most applicable here. They easily harmonize with the atmosphere of almost any interior character.

It is also worth considering that a certain type of wood has its own color, suitable for it:

  1. Pine stairs are painted in "light oak" and "red walnut".
  2. Birch products look chic in "red walnut"and" mahogany.
  3. Oak texture is similar to pine and can be stained in similar shades.

The colors of the wooden stairs in the photo will help each designer to make a choice.

White stairs in the interior

In modern cottages, special attention is paid to creating style with the help of staircase structures.

After all, they are a significant part of the interior and are able to qualitatively emphasize a certain style.

A win-win design option for lifting structures in any home is light colors. The unusual airiness of such a lifting structure gives it the effect of soaring.

Suitable mainly for minimalist styles, and also freely used for classic interiors. It is used in fairly bright rooms.

white features

The predominance of this color in the room is not a prerequisite.

You can limit yourself to the light design of furniture. Also, the stairs can act as an accent element. The main thing is a good idea of the designer. The main purpose of the light design of lifting structures is to accentuate certain effects of the interior style. White risers look especially beautiful in combination with the dark design of the steps, as seen in the photo.

Squatness is created by the opposite coloration. This option is a non-standard color of a wooden staircase.

White color in the interior has some advantages over the rest:

  1. It is universal for the design of any stylistic decision.

    Certain shades of it can vary from baked milk and Ivory to cream and mother-of-pearl.

  2. The naturalness of this color is associated with ecological cleanliness and flora.
  3. Parade-pompous and minimalist styles calmly absorb any shades of white.

A white wooden staircase in the interior to the second floor requires careful selection of the right color for both the lower and upper levels.

Features of choice are also hidden in the tastes of the owner. After consulting with professional designers, you can more accurately determine a specific shade and paint a certain part of the interior in the most aesthetically pleasing way.

When installing a wooden staircase, it must be taken into account that it is exposed to external influences and that it has served much longer, it must be covered with a protective compound.

How can a staircase be affected?

The tree is affected by:

  • Humidity;
  • Temperature;
  • Sunlight;
  • mechanical friction.

If you want to protect your staircase and give it a more finished look, all you need to do is paint it. Can be painted with stain, paint, varnish or special enamels.

How to paint a wooden staircase in a house

Before discussing the principles and rules of painting, you first need to decide what to paint and what to protect from. To do this, the staircase must be carefully studied and the main negative impacts to which it will be exposed should be identified and, on this basis, a protective coating should be selected.

First, let's look at how paints, varnishes and enamels for wood differ from each other. It is worth mentioning paints separately, but a little later, now we will deal with enamels and varnishes.

Lucky. Their beauty is that they bring out the natural texture of the wood, dry quickly, and are easy to apply.

There are alcohol-based varnishes and cellulose-based varnishes. Alcohol consists of resin in an organic solvent, it is used for interior wooden surfaces, as they are not frost-resistant enough.

Cellulose varnishes are intended for external surfaces that are located outside the house, they make protective film more durable, and perfectly cope with frost and moisture.

Varnish(varnish with the addition of resinous substances), used as a booster after varnishing, it adds shine to the surface and emphasizes the texture.

Enamel(lacquer without color mixed with pigment). Enamel paints the surface desired color and well protects it from adverse effects. Apply it with an aerosol.

Impregnation. Emphasizes the color of the tree and protects it from fungi, mold, adds fire-repellent properties to it. For stairs, oil and wax-based impregnations are used.

Paint for painting stairs, the choice of the manufacturer

When using paint, try to take into account the type of wood, its color and the location of the staircase itself and its appearance.

The type of wood must be taken into account, because many softwoods (stairs can be spruce, fir and pine) usually emit resins that significantly impair the adhesion of the paint to the wood.

If you have hardwoods, then you should not worry, they do not have such a property, so do not worry, there will be no problems with painting.

It is necessary to cover the surface with paint in several layers, it depends on the fact that the tree absorbs varnish-coloring materials well. As for the appearance, everything is simple here, loose wood absorbs more, dense and old wood absorbs less.

You need to choose a color that is most suitable for the external interior, but try not to spoil it too much natural look tree.

Although the paint is good in that it hides many of the imperfections of the wood and assembly errors. If you chose pigmented protective coatings, then before applying the surface must be covered with putty. But if you want to emphasize the natural color of the wood, then this will not work with paints.

Manufacturers:

  1. Tikkurila Empire (alkyd),
  2. Betolux (urethane-alkyd),
  3. Pesto (alkyd),
  4. Dufa (alkyd),
  5. Viva Color,
  6. Humbrol (enamel),
  7. flugger,
  8. dulux,
  9. Symphony.

The better to paint a wooden staircase

For the stairs in the house are well suited:

  • Alkyd;
  • Oily;
  • Cellulosic;

Alkyd paint- the paint got its name from alkyd resins. When dried, the paint gives a polymer film that perfectly protects wooden surface.

Advantages:

  • Resistant to light;
  • Not afraid of moisture;
  • Not needed additional tools when applied;
  • Dries quickly;
  • Bright colors of paints that do not fade;
  • Not toxic.

Flaws:

  • Higher price than oil.

Oil paint Care must be taken when covering surfaces with this paint, as the paint is relatively toxic and respiratory protection must be used.

Such paints are usually diluted with drying oil. Drying oil can be of two types: natural and artificial. Artificial drying oil protects the wooden surface less well and is suitable for interior spaces, and the natural one gives the tree good protection and used outdoors.

Advantages:

  • Low cost;
  • Well protect the surface from moisture;

Flaws:

  • Poisonous;
  • Requires special protection when working with it;
  • Dries for a long time;
  • Poorly tolerates mechanical stress;

How to paint wooden stairs

Steps are always exposed to strong mechanical stress, so you need to choose a paint that can handle this perfectly.

You can combine two types of paint, since alkyd is more expensive and is designed for mechanical stress, this paint can cover stairs and railings.

And the rest of the part that I use is oil paint. You can even paint in two contrasting colors, that is, buy alkyd paint of one color and oil paint of another.

You can cover the steps with varnish or enamel, it rather depends on how you imagine your future staircase.

How to paint a wooden staircase

If you have chosen paint, then you should not relax, the choice of paint is only half the battle, you still need to apply it with high quality.

The painting process itself can be divided into three stages:

  • Preparing stairs for painting
  • Painting;
  • Applying a topcoat (optional, depends on the paint).

Stair preparation

  • We cover with putty all the irregularities;
  • We grind;
  • Cover with a layer of primer.

After the first sanding, you need to wait two days for the wood fibers to straighten out, and they can be removed at the next sanding.

Then you only need to proceed with the primer, note that the primer must be suitable for the selected paint. And if you cover the surface with varnish instead of paint, then a primer is not needed.

It is optimal to carry out all work on preparing and painting the surfaces of the stairs in disassembled form, but if the structure is already installed, then all work can be done on site. They usually paint from top to bottom (descending down the stairs) or from bottom to top if the exit is at the top.

Painting

If people already live in the house and there is a need to use the stairs, then you can paint “through the step”. When painting, you can use brushes, rollers - as you prefer. When applying paint, you need to paint along the wood cuts.

Finish coat

After the paint has dried, it is covered with a transparent varnish on top, which is applied in three layers. Just let each layer dry well and sand each layer to remove bubbles and paint defects.

Tailored for you:

Any staircase needs to be updated from time to time. And given that the staircase is also an element of the interior, it is extremely important to choose the right paint and varnish. Consider the most popular paintwork materials, and also analyze how to paint the stairs to the second floor without involving specialists.

Before you begin to act, you need to mentally draw a picture for yourself, which should turn out in the end. This will help you choose suitable paint or varnish. When choosing a tool, you must also take into account the advice of professionals:

  • If your staircase is made of quality wood with a beautiful natural pattern, then you should not paint over it. It is better to emphasize this advantage with a semi-gloss or matte varnish.
  • In order not to destroy the texture of the wood, do not use primers. Buy "light" types of paints that allow the material to "breathe".
  • To paint indoor stairs, choose products that dry quickly and do not leave a persistent and pungent odor.
  • Long-term protection of the stairs from impact external factors, as well as its beautiful appearance, can be ensured using only abrasion-resistant varnishes and paints.
  • Use for processing additional funds protection against fungi, mold, insects.
  • Steps are not recommended to be covered with glossy enamel. Otherwise, you will not walk on them, but slide.

What can and should be covered with a wooden staircase

When you enter the store building materials you start to get lost. Therefore, it is important to know not only the types of these products, but also their features. The most common options for paintwork for painting stairs are:

  • dye;
  • impregnations and stains;
  • oil.

Paints

Today there are 3 types:

Lucky

For underlining natural beauty wood use varnishes. When choosing the appropriate type, pay attention to the features of the material of construction and the conditions of its operation. Lacquer coatings, like paints, there are several varieties:

  1. Alcoholic. This coating protects the stairs from biological and mechanical damage. But its major drawback is low degree moisture resistance. So it's better to use it like base layer, to give the tree the desired shade.
  2. Alkyd and alkyd-urethane. They are used for outdoor and indoor structures. A hard transparent film with a subtle tint serves as a reliable barrier against moisture and other negative factors.
  3. Formaldehyde. The design will become more resistant to wear. The resins included in the composition improve the adhesion of the varnish to the wood. The only drawback is toxicity and a characteristic odor that quickly disappears, but requires wearing a respirator during application.
  4. Polyester. After hardening, they form a solid, durable film that protects the stairs from moisture and other negative influences. If you want to make your design shine, use polyester varnish.
  5. Epoxy. These are two-component solutions that are used with hardeners. They prevent the destruction of the structure under the influence of moisture, alkalis and provide it with mechanical strength.
  6. Polyurethane. Differ a high degree wear and mechanical resistance. The high price of varnish is justified by a long service life and high performance.
  7. Yacht. Solid and durable coating varnish has good elasticity. This means that when the structure is deformed, the varnish layer does not peel off or crack. Due to its composition, yacht varnish is distinguished by wear resistance, good resistance to fungi, increased resistance to UV rays, and moisture resistance.

This type of impregnation is characterized by antiseptic properties. Lacquer is often applied over the stain as an additional layer. But at the same time, you need to pay attention to the compatibility of these funds.

Under the influence of the stain, the natural color of the wood becomes more saturated, and the texture of the wood becomes more contrasting.

For stairs made of wood, impregnation with an oil or wax base is best suited. Sometimes the composition of the stain may include a dye that gives the material a certain color.

The palette of possible colors is very diverse and depends on the taste preferences of the owner of the house or cottage. But first of all, you need to build on the style of the interior.

The staircase can be of any shade, ranging from muted to bright radiant colors. But most often they prefer a monochromatic color.

But sometimes there are more original designs, including up to five shades. They often experiment with contrasting colors, painting steps in one tone, and railings and handrails in another. It looks very impressive and unbanal.

In order to avoid mistakes when choosing a color, the following recommendations must be taken into account:

  • when using several colors, it is recommended to paint each part before assembling the entire structure;
  • to get a dark shade of the stairs, mix the impregnation with the top coat. This will allow the product to penetrate into the structure of the material, which will ensure the preservation of the color of the product for a long time;
  • to lighten the tree, translucent glazing compounds with light coloring pigments are used.

Processing of softwood stairs

Stair structures made of pine differ from those made of beech, larch, oak or other types of wood in that they require additional processing.

Before finalizing a pine wooden staircase inside the house, it is necessary to deresin it for a number of reasons:

  1. The resin substance protruding from the wood forms a film on the surface of the material, which prevents the penetration of paint into the fibers. As a result, layers of paint during operation will break off, worsening the condition of the stairs.
  2. Resin areas begin to darken over time.
  3. Coloring substances are deposited on the resin surface in an uneven layer.

Resin removal refers to the process of cleaning the surface from excess resin. To carry out this procedure, you will need solvents.

For coniferous trees a 25% acetone solution would be ideal. A brush is used to apply it. The surface of the material treated with the solution is washed warm water and allow time for complete drying. If there are very tarred places on the structure, they should be removed with a knife. The recesses obtained as a result of this are leveled with putty.

To prepare a solution for deresining, you need the following components:

  • 1 liter of hot water;
  • potash - 50 g;
  • baking soda - about 50 g;
  • grated soap - 40 g;
  • acetone - 1 glass;
  • alcohol - 10 g.

Painting a wooden staircase made of pine is done after the wood is completely dry. As a rule, 1-2 days are enough.

The better to paint a pine staircase

  1. The best means for covering a pine flight of stairs are enamel paints, as well as alkyd and polyurethane yacht varnishes.
  2. To preserve the beautiful structural pattern of wood, diluted products are used.
  3. To hide the defects of the material or give it a new shade, the paint is not diluted before application.
  4. In order for the coloring matter to lay down in a beautiful even layer, the surface should be cleaned of debris and dust.
  5. Pigmented dyes are used to mask defects on the steps.
  6. For previously painted structures, urethane-alkyd solutions are used.

Step by step instructions for painting stairs

Sometimes for painting they resort to the help of specialists from construction companies. Of course, they know their business and do the work 100% efficiently, but you will have to fork out a lot for their services.

If you are not ready for this, then you can do everything yourself. Just be extremely careful and clearly follow the instructions:

  1. Before starting work, remove debris, dirt, wipe off dust not only from the structure, but also from the room in which it is located.
  2. Repair any chips and cracks with wood putty.
  3. Let the putty dry completely for 1 day, and then smooth out any flaws with sandpaper or a grinder.
  4. Remove the resulting debris and dust, as even barely noticeable particles of dust will spoil the appearance of the stairs.
  5. Apply 2 times a primer or stain on a flight of stairs with an interval of a day.
  6. Before applying paint to the surface of the material, it must be mixed well - this will allow you to break up the clots and lumps formed there.
  7. The dye can be applied with a spray gun, roller, brush. Avoid the formation of hardened droplets of paint.
  8. To prevent cracks from forming on the stairs when the dye dries, the air in the room should be moderately humid.

With such simple actions, you can easily update the stairs.

Stylish color options for stairs in the interior

The cost of painting a wooden staircase today will be quite high. Indeed, in this work, painting technology is important and right choice dye.

Today we will tell you how to paint a wooden staircase with your own hands. All this is quite capable of doing on your own. Also, the video in this article and the photo will help with the choice of dye and the rules for its application.

What factors are most destructive for a wooden staircase

Ladders made of any material are subject to heavy loads. Under external influence the structure of the wood is gradually destroyed.

Without proper treatment with special impregnations and protective paints, the structure quickly loses its presentable appearance, partial destruction of the frame or steps is possible. Paint for a wooden staircase should be selected thoroughly (see Which paint is better to paint a tree: making a choice).

The duration of the operation of the stairs depends on many components:

  • Design features- if the daily load corresponds to the quality and thickness of the timber from which the staircase is made, it will serve flawlessly for many years without major repairs.
  • Temperature fluctuation, air humidity and other atmospheric factors affect the quality of wood. It is most damaging when wooden structure is outside. There are fewer destructive factors in the interior, but over time, the load becomes noticeable by reducing the strength of the base.
  • Wooden structures that are located on the south side of the house suffer from drying out of the fiber structure. Wood is a natural material with a certain percentage of moisture, which is necessary for its elasticity and strength. Under the influence of direct sunlight, the percentage of moisture in the wood is reduced to a critical level. Therefore, it is important to paint it without waiting for the wood to dry out.
  • Places of the most intense load- the middle part of the steps and handrails. If the stairs are used in shoes, entering directly from the street, this is unfavorable for the wood. It is bad when the handrails are taken with unwashed or wet hands, in wet gloves, they should be protected the most.
  • The central part of the steps is gradually erased, they begin to creak and sag. This should be given due attention when processing with impregnations and applying a finish coating, which to a large extent preserves the natural material.

Basic requirements for the processing and painting of flights of stairs

Painting a wooden staircase must meet certain requirements.

After all, the final result depends on the competent choice of materials for wood processing:

  • Antiseptic;
  • Fungicide;
  • stain;
  • Fire protection impregnation;
  • Primer (see Primer for wood and the rules for choosing it);
  • Dye;
  • Varnish.

The dyes themselves are slightly diluted before wood processing to improve the consistency. In this form, the base is better distributed over the surface and dries faster.

Attention: The best result can be achieved when painting in 2-3 layers. It is equally important to choose the right tool for applying paint - brushes, rollers with various nozzles, a spray gun (spray gun).

So:

  • For interiors, wood can be treated minimally, especially if it is related to the aesthetics of its texture, which you want to emphasize. Some masters make real masterpieces, with wood carvings and special structural elements. In such cases, the wood is not primed before varnishing, but a hardwood is chosen, which is carefully sanded and slightly improved with a stain.
  • Depending on the expected effect, choose a matte or glossy varnish, there is also a semi-matte. All of them differ in the degree of reflection of light. Not suitable for every design flights of stairs with glossy sheen. Matte lacquer to the greatest extent emphasizes the beauty of the texture of wood fibers.

Attention: For the treatment of stairs with paints and varnishes in the interior, toxic bases and reagents with a pungent odor should be avoided! It is forbidden to work with facade paints and impregnations for outdoor work, which leave a specific smell for a long time!

  • The construction market offers eco-friendly paints and almost odorless compositions for indoor use. The same applies to solvents. It is better to use ready-to-use varnish or paint. If you cannot do without chemicals, then dilute the base to the desired consistency in an open space.
  • Quick-drying dye is easy to use, after processing it seizes well, leaving no smell. But they need to work fast experienced hand, apply a thin layer and immediately remove sags and smudges.
  • Paints for outdoor use are suitable for processing stairs with outside at home. Use any facade paint for wood processing. The instructions should indicate at what temperature the work is acceptable and the drying time of the paints. It is undesirable to work in the heat, in the rain and at sub-zero temperatures. Use work clothes and a protective mask when painting with outdoor paint.
