Secrets of painting the ceiling with water-based paint. How to paint the ceiling with water-based paint? Is it possible to paint over whitewash

One of the most difficult stages of home renovation that everyone faces House master, is the ceiling finish. Until recently, lime or chalk whitewashing, which was widely used until recently, is now used quite rarely. This is explained by the fact that the initially snow-white ceiling becomes dirty over time and becomes unsightly.

In addition, such a finish requires a significant amount of labor to prepare the surface for application. finish coat. Painting the ceiling with acrylic paint retains an attractive appearance much longer; care for such a finish is not particularly difficult. Repairs are quick and easy, and painting can be done by hand.

A perfectly painted ceiling has an absolutely monotonous surface

Preparing to repair the ceiling

The beautifully painted ceiling is shown in the photo. To paint the ceiling without streaks, you need to properly prepare for the work. First of all, you should free the room as much as possible from interfering furnishings. Then you need to carefully remove the old finish from the ceiling surface.

After that, it must be qualitatively leveled, removing all significant elevation differences. At the final stage of preparation, a layer of primer is applied to the coating to improve the adhesion of the paint to the base and its more economical consumption. Will be required the following materials and tools:

  • stepladder and film for covering interior items;
  • spatula and paint roller or wide brush;
  • sanding machine and sandpaper;
  • primer and putty;
  • goggles, a respirator and a tight work suit;
  • a water container and a flashlight.

Highlighting with a flashlight, you can easily identify the existing unevenness of the coating. It is most convenient to moisten the surface with a spray gun or a paint roller, apply a primer with a wide brush. The use of a stepladder makes the job much easier. An airbrush helps a lot to paint without streaks.

Painting the ceiling with your own hands will help reduce the cost of repair work.

Room preparation

Painting the surface of the ceiling with acrylic paint requires preparatory activities. The room should be prepared for the appearance of a simply amazing amount of pollution and fine dust that occur when the old coating is removed. Cushioned furniture may be hopelessly damaged by crumbling pieces of limestone and chalk dust wetted with dirty water. As a result, sofas, armchairs and other furniture must be taken out of the room.

It is very convenient to close the walls and furniture with a special film

Sometimes, for some reason, this can be difficult to do, in which case you should cover all the remaining interior items in the room with a waterproof film. You can fix it with a wide adhesive tape, which is then easy to remove.

Chandeliers and others are dismantled from the ceiling surface. lighting, to prevent short circuit the supply voltage is removed from electrical wires which is especially true in the bathroom. Careful preparation helps to paint without streaks.

Removing the old coating

The method of removing the old coating depends on which finishing material has been applied previously. The easiest way to remove whitewash is with chalk: it is washed off with a soft sponge soaked in water. If difficulties arise in this process, it is necessary to scrape off the coating with a metal spatula.

To start in a bucket warm water a kilogram of table salt is dissolved, and the cleaned area of \u200b\u200bthe ceiling is moistened with a spray gun, a wide brush or roller. After waiting until the whitewash gets wet, it is scraped off with a spatula, to which it is useful to fasten a scoop with a wire, where crumbling dirt will collect.

The most noticeable irregularities are cleaned with a spatula.

In some cases, wallpaper or foam tiles are used to finish the ceiling. Wet wallpapers are easily separated from the base, foam tiles are also easily broken off. In the latter case, it is better to scrape off the remaining glue with a metal spatula, application chemicals may cause injury to the skin and eyes. Soot spots on the surface are removed by washing with water mixed with soda, rust spots are treated with copper sulphate.

Puttying and leveling

After cleaning the surface of the ceiling, it is visually inspected in order to detect irregularities in the coating. Cracks of considerable size are closed with a reinforcing mesh, the cavities are filled with putty and smoothed out with a spatula, the protrusions are cut off.

Seams between concrete slabs and the joints of the ceiling with the walls are tapped in order to detect voids, which are also filled with putty. After carefully leveling the surface, a primer is applied to it with a brush-brush in two layers.

A composition with antiseptic properties is well suited, which prevents further development pathogenic microflora. For high-quality drying of the primer, it is important to maintain indoor correct mode positive temperatures from five to thirty degrees Celsius.

Leveling the ceiling with putty

Final leveling of the surface before covering the ceiling water-based paint, achieved by applying putty. Its first layer is located in the transverse direction of the primer coating, the second - transversely to the first. By illuminating the surface to be treated with a flashlight, it is easy to detect and eliminate even minor elevation changes that will obscure nearby areas.

After drying, the roughness of the coating is peeled off sandpaper. In the bathroom, putty should be applied especially carefully. Painted concrete will last a long time if the foundation is properly prepared. In the bathroom, the painted ceiling is exposed to a rather aggressive effect.

When is a brush good and what is better than a roller

Both brushes and rollers are used for high-quality painting work. The brush is good for painting corners, joints of mating surfaces, heating batteries, pipeline networks and other similar items. A large brush-brush is convenient to perform lime whitewash, it is somewhat difficult to use a roller when working with such material.

The roller is best used when working on large areas: the larger the surface, the more effective its use. This is true for even coatings; curvilinear objects of complex configuration cannot be painted with a roller.

Standard ceiling paint kit

This tool can be used while standing in one place, making movements back and forth with a long handle, which is important when access to the treated coating is difficult. The paint is applied evenly, without visually noticeable strokes, and this is difficult to achieve when working with a brush. Painting the surface of the ceiling with a roller gives good results.

The choice of roller is a separate issue

Roller selection is an issue requiring separate consideration. This tool is available in a variety of sizes for processing various elements surfaces. There are also corner rollers that have a working coating on the end part, which is necessary when processing corners. A fur coat is called a coating of the working part, it is made of the following materials:

  • felt or velor;
  • foam rubber or mohair;
  • natural fur or polymers.

When using a roller when working, it must be taken into account that the longer the pile of his fur coat, the greater the consumption paintwork material.

It is much faster and easier to work with a roller, as it takes several times more paint than an ordinary brush.
Rollers are very different in size and quality.

To cover the ceiling with acrylic paint, a roller with a fur coat made of synthetics is better suited, while the coating will turn out to be even and without streaks. Work with paints oil based can be done with almost any type of this tool. It is undesirable to only use a foam rubber coat, as this material deteriorates under the influence of solvents that make up oil paints.

Which water-based paint is better

Before going to the store, you need to decide which paint is better to paint the ceiling. On modern construction market There is a huge selection of paints based on water emulsion. They include pigment and polymer components dissolved in water. Depending on the active substance, the following types of water-based paints are distinguished:

  • having in its composition liquid glass (silicate);
  • highly resistant to moisture (acrylic);
  • resistant to aggressive chemical environments (latex);
  • characterized by versatility (silicone);
  • inexpensive in cost (polyvinyl acetate).

Several representatives of paints for the ceiling

You can decide which water-based paint is better in each case. comparative analysis their technical specifications. It should be based on the correspondence of price and quality of this type of paint and varnish products.

Acrylic paint color and tint

Acrylic paints are available in standard color palette. To obtain the desired shade, their tinting is used. It is a procedure for mixing paint and coloring pigments to obtain the desired shade of paintwork material.

Tinting is used when cosmetic repairs are needed, if part of the coating is swollen or peeled off, in case of a shortage of paint to complete the entire amount of work, or if it is necessary to create a color palette that is in harmony with the environment.

When tinting, the paint is thoroughly mixed.

Coloring pigments are added to acrylic paint, the so-called colorants, made in the form of dry mixes, pastes or the same paint. Their basis can be of organic or inorganic origin, organic gives more saturated colors but they are not resistant to ultraviolet radiation. Inorganic colorants have good resistance to aggressive attack. environment, but the colors formed with their help are less bright.

If we paint over whitewash

Previously, whitewashing was widely used to finish the surface of the ceiling. If it is necessary to apply paint over it, certain conditions must be met. Whitewashing should be applied in a thin layer, in which there is no cracking. Otherwise, whitewash particles may begin to flake off when painting.

Ceiling primer - it's like butter, which will not spoil the porridge

The check is carried out by applying a deeply penetrating layer of primer to the whitewashed surface. After it dries, the control area is wetted with water, and if the coating does not peel off, paint can be applied over the whitewash.

Water-based paint will stay on the ceiling for a very long time if the layer of whitewash underneath has good adhesion to the surface, and there are no bumps and cracks.

Of course, the use of a primer is mandatory if the painting is not done with the material that was previously applied. In this case, the composition of the soil is determined by the choice of finishing coating.

How to paint with a roller

Qualitatively paint the ceiling with a roller will help the observance of some simple rules. Before you begin to perform the main amount of work, you should use a brush to paint over the corners and joints of ceilings and walls. Then a little paint is poured into the paint tray, a roller is dipped into it, the excess is removed from the fur coat on the ribbed part of the tray.

When painting the ceiling, it is important to be placed on comfortable stairs

Start applying the first layer should be from the window opening in the direction perpendicular to the incidence of sunlight, and the second layer is applied after the first has dried in the transverse direction. Thus, it is possible to avoid the appearance of weakly stained areas, invisible at first glance, but which will appear over time. Work should be started early in the morning, as the sun's rays at this time highlight all the irregularities well. Found on visual inspection small defects dried coatings are cleaned with fine-grained emery cloth.

Can be used with a spray gun

You can paint the ceiling using a spray gun. Its use makes the process much faster and easier than using a paint roller. When preparing the tool for use, the sprayer is directed to the side and, relieving excess pressure in the system, they ensure that the outgoing paint lays down in a uniform and thin layer.

When using a spray gun, it is easy to ensure a uniform color of the ceiling

The surface of the ceiling is divided into several sections and their sequential painting is carried out, while the paint jet is directed strictly vertically. The sprayer is held at a distance of thirty to fifty centimeters from the surface, a meter segment is passed in approximately five seconds.

Maintain an even pace of work, delaying the nozzle at one point will result in too thick a layer of paint flowing down. The first layer is applied in the direction transverse to the incidence of sunlight, the second - in the longitudinal direction. For the formation of a qualitatively painted surface when working with an airbrush, three layers of paint and varnish material should be applied. Each subsequent layer is applied after the previous one has completely dried.

Little tricks

Little tricks in the work will help to qualitatively paint the ceiling. So, the finishing layer of the paintwork material is applied in the direction of incidence of the rays of natural light, this makes the joints of adjacent layers invisible.

If a local, incompletely painted area of the surface is found, it will have to be completely covered with a new layer of paint, attempts to paint over only a defective area will lead to the appearance of clearly distinguishable spots. Visual inspection from different angles helps to identify such areas.

The scheme of movements when painting the ceiling

In no case should you try to neglect the application of a primer layer. Such attempts to save money will lead to the fact that the paint that has not adhered well to the base will simply crumble soon. You should not hesitate when applying paint, undue delays will lead to the fact that the dried material will begin to stick to the coat of the paint roller, and the work will have to be started again. An excessively thick layer of applied paint can be brought back to normal by running a dry roller over it, while the pile on its fur coat will absorb the excess.

Exists various options ceiling finishes. Today, the stores offer a huge range of materials for this. One of the most popular and relatively inexpensive is water-based acrylic paint. For the ceiling, this is quite an acceptable option. Many believe that this finish is the least laborious of all. existing options. In the article, we will see if this is so.

Material advantages: consumer opinion

Why do many owners choose water-based paint? As consumers themselves say, this material has many undeniable merits. First of all, home craftsmen note that this coating dries very quickly. In some cases, just a couple of hours is enough for this. Many people choose coloring compositions of this type because of their safety not only for humans, but also for pets. The composition does not have a pungent or unpleasant odor. So after application, there is no need to urgently leave the room. The composition can be given different color. For this, special colors are used on water based. Subject to the recommendations, the staining process does not cause many problems. One of undoubted advantages compositions, consumers believe that the tools can be easily cleaned after application.

Possible difficulties

Whitewashing ceilings with water-based paint should be carried out very high quality. Otherwise, glare and streaks will be visible on the surface. I must say that painting the ceiling with water-based paint the first time may not work. It is especially difficult to achieve a perfect surface for those who have never done this until now. At the same time, re-painting the ceiling with water-based paint will not hide, but, on the contrary, will increase the visibility of defects. There are several nuances that are usually not taken into account.

Why do spots appear on the surface?

The occurrence of defects can be due to several reasons. First of all, before whitewashing the ceiling with water-based paint, you should take into account the features of the lighting in the room. Stains can also appear when using a low-quality composition. The choice of tool with which the ceiling will be painted with water-based paint should be approached with all care. An incorrectly selected or poor quality roller may cause uniform distribution composition. How to get the right tool? Experts do not recommend choosing velor or foam roller. As the owners of the premises themselves say, in which the ceilings were whitewashed with water-based paint, the best is a tool with a long pile or threads. It should also be remembered that after drying, the composition forms a smooth and fairly durable film. It can give glare in daylight. If the technology of painting the ceiling with water-based paint is not followed, the work is done in a hurry, and optical effects are not taken into account, then the surface will be simply terrible.

Lighting

Before whitewashing the ceiling with water-based paint, it is necessary to evaluate the distribution of light in the room. As a rule, it is necessary to take into account the type of flooring. If it is shiny and smooth (for example, parquet, ceramic tile or laminate), then the lighting on the ceiling will be much brighter than with a pile coating. Given the optical effect that is obtained when light is reflected from the floor, the surface is covered with the first layer in the direction from the window to the opposite wall. The next one, on the contrary, is parallel to the source of penetration of natural light into the room. With a chaotic distribution of strokes, a rather unpredictable "reflection" effect can result.

Coating composition

Both layers require the same brand of paint. The ideal is the option in which the mixtures will be from the same batch. If the composition has frozen to such a state that ice has formed in it, then you should not use it. In any case, as the masters note, in such a noticeable area as the ceiling. Separation of the pigment components could occur in the mixture. Before that, it must be thoroughly mixed. There should not be a single lump in the mixture.

Tool

The roller is the most optimal device for applying water-based ceiling paint. Reviews of the owners of residential premises indicate that applying the mixture with a brush is a very time-consuming task. In addition, in the latter case, the formation of stains and glare is more likely. Suitable for work roller bright yellow.

Surface preparation

This stage, according to experienced craftsmen, is decisive in the process of painting the ceiling. The surface must be dry and perfectly clean. To soak the old coating, you can use bast brushes or a water spray in a vacuum cleaner. Next, the whitewash must be cleaned with a spatula until concrete base. After that, the surface is washed again. The ceiling must be allowed to dry. If the surface has been pasted over with wallpaper, all residues should be removed adhesive composition. As noted experienced craftsmen, the old coating layer is usually removed in whole layers. The surface must be thoroughly cleaned, otherwise the new coating will lie unevenly, with defects, and will not set well.

Painting the ceiling with water-based paint: the nuances

In the process of work, as experienced craftsmen assure, there is not a single moment that would not affect the result. At the very beginning, before stirring the paint, you need to read the information on the package. Some manufacturers do not recommend further diluting the composition with water. Such paint should be thoroughly mixed directly in the factory container. Otherwise, there is a risk of leaving the pigment components in the jar. Experienced homeowners self-repair, adapted to mix the composition with a drill and a special nozzle - a mixer. If the mixture needs to be further diluted, this should be done by adding small portions of water. In this case, you need to continuously mix the composition. When adding water, the main thing is not to pour too much of it, since it will not work to “thicken” the paint back.

Convenience device

After the paint is mixed, it must be poured into a container with a wide bottom. For these purposes, a plastic cuvette is perfect. Usually it is used when developing photographs. If there is no such device in the house, then it is quite possible to replace it. wooden box for fruits. First you will need to cover the bottom with polyethylene.

How to paint the ceiling with water-based paint?

The paint roller should be dipped into a container (special paint bath) with the composition and rolled over the surface on it until it is completely and evenly distributed. For convenience, a long handle is attached to the tool. The application of the layer can be called the most crucial moment. As professionals say, movements should be straightforward, fast and confident. At the same time, one should not forget about the direction. The first layer is applied from the window to the wall. As soon as there is not enough paint, the roller is again dipped into the container.

Subtleties

Painting the ceiling with water-based paint is not an easy job. It is necessary to take into account one nuance when applying a layer. The area covered with the composition should not be looked directly from the bottom up, but at an angle (approximately 30-40 degrees). In this case, all defects and errors of the layer will be visible. It is better, of course, if there is an assistant who will tell you where there are unpainted places. As long as the paint layer has not dried up, errors can be eliminated. But after drying, this can only worsen the situation. As experienced craftsmen say, it is highly not recommended to be distracted from the process. Painting the ceiling with water-based paint is done without lunch breaks and smoke breaks. Applying a second layer can both correct errors and aggravate them. It should be remembered that re-staining is carried out after the surface has dried. If it was not possible to correct the defects with the second layer, it is not advisable to apply the composition for the third time. In this case, only removing the entire coating and repeating the process from the very beginning will help.

We reduce the time of work

Any painting work using a brush or roller is considered quite laborious. The process often takes a long time. Painting the ceiling with water-based paint with an airbrush will significantly speed up the process. This version of the application of the composition has a number of features. Let's consider them further.

Training

The paint, as well as when applying it with a roller, is thoroughly mixed beforehand. In this case, it is necessary to absolutely exclude the presence of lumps in the mixture. If they remain, they can clog the spray gun, and the mixture will lie unevenly. If it is supposed to give the composition any shade, color is added with stirring. You need to pour it in small portions. It is unacceptable to leave stains of pigment in the paint. The composition must be homogeneous. Experienced craftsmen advise preparing paint with a margin, because if it runs out and the surface is not completely covered, then it may not be possible to pick up a perfectly accurate tone.

Important Details

It should be remembered that when applying the mixture with an airbrush, a sufficiently large volume of the sprayed composition hangs in the air. It will settle not only on the surface being treated, but also on all the others that are in the room, not excluding furniture. In addition, it is necessary to protect the face and especially the eyes from sprayed paint. Therefore, work must be carried out in a respirator and glasses. Remove all furniture from the room. If this is not possible, then the items must be carefully closed with polyethylene, fixing it with tape.

Working process

Using an airbrush allows you to get a perfect surface without defects. When applying it is very important that the layer is thin and even. Immediately before application, you should take the spray gun nozzle a little to the side and press it briefly several times. As soon as the spray is uniform, you can start applying to the surface. The spray gun should be kept at a distance of about 30-50 cm from the ceiling. The jet of paint is directed directly perpendicular to the surface.

How to make the process easier

Mentally, you should divide the surface into squares. The width of each should be approximately equal to the length of the arm. Staining areas should be done in turn. Layers are applied first transversely and then longitudinally. When using the spray gun, in no case should you stop or linger in one place. In this case, the layer will be too thick or the paint may leak. Work should be carried out at the same pace.

How to apply the composition

The recommended number of layers is three. Each new one is applied only after the previous one has dried. Do not paint over a fresh layer of coloring compound or primer. Otherwise, the mixture will lie poorly and may exfoliate quickly enough. This will lead to a complete overhaul. To create the first and third layers optimum time morning and evening hours are considered when the room has good daylight and direct sunlight does not blind. Although this recommendation is not necessarily followed exactly. The most important thing here is that all the errors in applying the composition are visible, and the angle at which the light falls is as close as possible to a constant for the repaired room.

When starting to repair your home, whether it is an apartment in the city or a house in the countryside, any developer understands that finishing the ceiling remains a rather difficult stage in the work. Today there are all sorts of solutions for the ceiling: cladding ceiling tiles or wallpapering, hanging and stretch ceiling. But not every owner can afford such options. Since the cost of painting the ceiling with water-based paint is quite affordable, this type of finish is still relevant. And if you use the most ordinary roller for work, then even more so.

Choosing the Right Painting Tool

Since most ceilings are large and flat surfaces, the most practical tool for applying paint is a paint roller. You can, of course, paint the ceiling with a brush, but all the strokes will be obvious, and such a picture is completely unacceptable for the ceiling, since it will be perceived as unevenly painted. Therefore, it is customary to use a brush only for painting corners and hard-to-reach areas.

On the market building tools today there are quite a lot of them different types, which makes it difficult for beginners to choose. These are velor, foam rubber and fleecy rollers. The price for them does not differ much, which can be misleading about their allegedly identical qualities. But the differences are actually very significant. And the selected roller will be in more affect the painting of the ceiling.

Of all the variety of rollers, the best result is achieved when using a roller with pile (threads). In such a situation, foam rubber is not suitable due to the fact that it absorbs too much paint that accumulates on the ceiling surface, and because of this, bubbles appear on it. But velor tools take little paint.

If you are going to paint large area, important point is to choose the largest possible roller, since we are talking about the area of the ink surface. You can also paint the ceiling with water-based paint with an airbrush, but today we'll talk about the simplest option.

It is best to choose a medium bristle roller due to the fact that a large one absorbs too much paint and thereby applies a rather large layer of paint, and a small bristle is likely to leave unpainted areas. The rougher the ceiling surface, the longer the pile at the roller should be chosen so that the paint covers the entire texture and fills all the recesses. We also recommend that you do not use rollers with a bolt-on handle or foam rubber, because they quickly fail.

In addition, you should know how experienced craftsmen select rollers, and how to distinguish quality tool from poor quality

  1. When choosing a roller, it is recommended to squeeze it in your hand: in this case, a high-quality roller will not be deformed as a result of compression.
  2. Carefully inspect the seam on the roller: a high-quality product does not have an obvious joint of the fabric, since such seams can be left on the ceiling during the strip painting process.
  3. Check the strength of the villi by pulling them towards you: a high-quality roller will not allow a single villus to stretch out, while cheap fakes will leave a noticeable tuft in your hand.

Under your roller, you need to choose a plastic painting dish, into which paint is poured and where the substance is then rolled out with a roller. Remember that just dipping a roller into a bucket of paint doesn't mean you can expect a beautifully painted ceiling! In order to use the roller from the floor without the use of scaffolding, you need to purchase a special telescopic tube. With this long folding handle, you can reach anywhere you want.

To access different corners, as well as similar places to corners, use a brush. For this type of work, a flute brush is used. AT retail there are special types of this tool. These brushes do not leave behind characteristic streaks and provide almost the same result as a roller. Regarding the width of the brushes, it is better to purchase a brush with a very small thickness (3 centimeters) and a slightly wider tool (8 centimeters).

Removing the old finish from the ceiling surface

Before you paint the ceiling surface with water-based paint, you need to do preparatory work and protect floors, window sills, radiators and furniture from splashes and dirt (it’s better to take it out altogether). You can cover them with plastic wrap, newspaper, or cloth, and secure with light adhesive tape. She also needs to glue the walls around the perimeter, the risers of gas and heating pipes. This sticky paper tape is easy to remove and leaves no residue behind. You can remove it as soon as the paint thickens.

After that, the ceiling should be freed from layers old paint or whitewash. In order to get rid of lime or chalk whitewash, it is necessary to moisten it abundantly with water using a paint roller, then scrape it off using a steel spatula or chisel. At the end, wash the ceiling with a sponge.

To update the ceiling, painted with water-based paint, you need to spend more time on the preparatory work. All this is due to the fact that the process of removing old paint is laborious work, since the previous layer practically does not dissolve in water, and therefore it is not possible to fully scrape off the ceiling.

Such work most often consists in removing peeling paint with a spatula, as shown in the photo about painting the ceiling with water-based paint. To facilitate this not entirely pleasant work, you can use the following trick. Moisten the previous coating with plenty of water, using a foam roller or water spray. This procedure must be repeated twice with an interval of twenty minutes.

Moisture should thoroughly saturate the previous coating. After that, you need to make a draft by opening all windows and doors. The layer swollen with water forms swellings of the old water-based paint, which are not difficult to remove with a spatula. Such work must be done fairly quickly so that the surface on which the work is being done does not have time to dry. Next, you need to treat rust and stains from smudges with a 5% solution of copper sulfate.

If there are hard-to-remove stains on your ceiling, you can apply the following composition: a two or three percent hydrochloric acid solution (gently wipe the stains, trying not to get on the skin). Such recipes are also known: a solution of twenty parts of crushed lime, which is diluted with one part of drying oil, a thick solution of lime and water with the addition of denatured alcohol (about 50 ml). Any of the last two mixtures is superimposed on pollution for 10 - 15 minutes. And all this is repeated until the complete removal of pollution. Usually two treatments are sufficient.

Leveling the ceiling before painting with a roller

After complete cleaning of the ceiling surface, it is necessary to align it. For this purpose, a thin-layer putty, which has good adhesion properties, is best suited. It has excellent plasticity and gives an almost flat surface, which is perfectly processed with fine-grained sandpaper. Using a spatula, the substance is applied to the ceiling. Quite often, the ceiling is leveled by applying whitewash putty on an oil-adhesive basis, which is distributed evenly over the surface with a brush, spatula or roller.

Remember that before that it is necessary to close up all the cracks and cracks in the ceiling by watching a video about painting the ceiling with water-based paint and filling them with a specially prepared composition. To completely fill the gaps with putty, it is necessary to widen them before applying. The next preparatory operation is the priming of the surface, which is produced by the same paint. It is applied in a very thin layer, then the composition is allowed to dry thoroughly so that the putty does not come off.

Preparatory work before painting the ceiling

First, open the prepared paint and, in accordance with the instructions, dilute the paint to the desired density. Manufacturers very often recommend adding approximately 5-10% water to the solution. If, nevertheless, the manufacturer does not recommend diluting the paint, then it only needs to be mixed. This is easily done with a mixer attachment on an electric drill. To paint the surface in one layer, this mixing will be enough.

You can not use the roller with which you applied the primer to paint the ceiling with a water-based emulsion, it is better to take a new one or replace the fur coat with the old one. Take the roller in your hands and dip it into a bowl of paint. It is important to note that, according to the technology of painting the ceiling with water-based paint, you should not completely lower it into the container, but only dip it. The roller usually gets wet on one side and the edge that gets wet becomes heavier. But you need to ensure that the entire circumference of the tool evenly absorbs the paint.

To do this, you roll out the roller on the trough (special dishes that are sold in special paint kits), mesh or a clean sheet of hardboard, linoleum, but not on the ceiling surface. By slightly pressing the roller against the sheet, you can evenly saturate its entire surface with paint. After that, you need to dip the roller into the paint again and roll it out again. If suddenly you fail to wet the roller evenly, then upon completion of the repair, non-painting will appear. After drying, it is they who form the ill-fated spots, which we talked about at the very beginning.

Sufficiently experienced painters do this automatically, and you, of course, need to practice. Such work is not very difficult, but here you need to be careful. For more confidence, you can practice on a section of an unprepared wall, a piece of drywall, or any surface that is not a pity to use for the experiment.

Painting the ceiling with a water-based emulsion using a roller

Once you have rolled out the roller and the threads are evenly filled with paint, start painting the ceiling with water-based paint. All work is best done during daylight hours, starting from a remote corner. The main thing to remember is that the paint must be applied evenly to the surface of the ceiling, without delaying the whole process. Upgrading the ceiling even in big room takes only 15-20 minutes.

Apply water-based paint to the ceiling in parallel stripes. Try to make stripes that are close to 50 centimeters wide. You need to paint with an overlap, while each new strip should overlap the previous one by 8 - 10 centimeters. Thoroughly rub the paint and make sure that the edge of the paint does not dry out at the layer.

When working, do not tear the roller from the surface, increasing the pressure as the paint is used up. Traces from the edges of the roller must be rolled out in a perpendicular direction. If you plan to paint the ceiling with water-based paint in several layers, then remember that the last layer should be placed in the direction of the windows, and the previous one in the perpendicular direction.

To paint the corners of the ceiling you need to use a brush. Dip it in the paint one third and squeeze out the excess composition on the edge of the can. With narrow strokes, apply the paint around the perimeter of the ceiling with a strip that has a width of about 5 centimeters, and rub it thoroughly. A thin and even layer will be obtained, which will later merge with a fresh layer of paint on the main surface.

Painter, painting ceiling, looks at him at a right angle and does not see the place where he has already “walked” with a roller. His vision also does not allow him to see how many times he touched a certain area with a roller. The entire ceiling for him acquired a wet uniform shade and therefore visually it seems that the entire plane is painted the same way. This is where another bug is hidden. Painters with extensive experience in this case sometimes step aside and look at the ceiling from a different angle, as non-paints immediately become visible.

When deficiencies arise, they must be dealt with. It happens that stains remain after even your efforts to resuscitate the ceiling. Further work useless and only leads to waste of material. This work needs to be redone. You can correct errors only in this way - sand the entire ceiling with fine sandpaper. If you painted over only 1-2 layers, then everything will work out. But if you went through the roller a lot more, you will have to sand and putty and re-paint everything.

Eliminate all drafts in the room, curtain the windows so that direct sunlight does not hit the ceiling surface. Do not use additional heaters to speed up the drying process, because temperature regime in the room must fully comply with the instructions that are indicated on the label of the water-based paint can.

And finally, remember that you should not focus only on the low price of painting the ceiling with water-based paint, you must strictly follow the technology! It is best to do the work in the afternoon so that you can repeat the process in the morning. Remember that the surface after each coat of paint should dry well. If the first layer is not allowed to dry, the second will get wet and lift the existing paint.

In an apartment, this is the most affordable finishing method to date. Quality and modern materials able to achieve amazing results. Whitewashing is a thing of the past, and water-based or acrylic paint allows you to decorate the surface in any tone and emphasize the dignity of the interior. Consider how to properly paint the ceiling with paint in order to decorative coating was durable and retained an attractive appearance for a long time.

Choice of special paint

In the hardware store, it is easy to get lost in the variety of different water-dispersion and solvent-based ceiling paints. Of the large abundance of species, the most common can be distinguished:

  • Acrylic. One of the most sought after and popular types of paint among many builders and craftsmen, it does not require a lot of consumption when painting. To make the ceiling pure white, it will be enough to apply only two layers. The paint has an elastic structure, can be tinted (mixed to find the right shade), is universal, environmentally friendly and does not harm health, is resistant to abrasion, durable, easy to clean, it can be wiped with a damp cloth and washed, it is resistant to moisture and UV radiation, has vapor barrier properties. This type of paint does not emit toxic substances, has no smell, perfectly tightens small cracks and removes all defects on the surface. A feature of acrylic is its darkening after drying, this should be remembered when choosing a color in a store.
  • Latex. The most expensive type of paint, has a powerful water-repellent effect. The painted surface can be repeatedly washed with soapy water, the paint easily tightens microcracks, is resistant to moisture, abrasion and mechanical damage. The downside is low level light fastness, as well as difficult cleansing upon removal. latex paint excellent for embossed surfaces, has a thin elastic matte layer. The coating is porous in structure, therefore allowing the material under the paint to breathe. The composition of the paint includes polymer fillers, so when painting it does not drip from the ceiling, it is easy to use and does not peel off.
  • Water emulsion. To better understand how to paint a ceiling with water-based paint, you need to have an idea about its properties. This type is widespread among masters and beginners, as it is non-toxic and does not pose a health hazard. In addition, this paint does not emit fumes and does not have a specific smell. It is practical and versatile, suitable for almost any surface, except for glossy paint. Easily washed off with a soapy solution if necessary, suitable for further staining. This is a budget option for simple repair, since the cost of paint is not great.
  • Silicone. Produced on the basis of silicone resins, they combine the properties of organic and mineral coatings, they can be called new generation paints. This type is able to create a durable and elastic coating, tighten the smallest cracks and hide irregularities, remove microscopic defects on the ceiling, is vapor-tight, resistant to abrasion and moisture. This paint has water-repellent properties, so it is not afraid of pollution. It is environmentally friendly and safe for health, does not emit toxic fumes and substances, is easy to maintain and operate, and is durable. Silicone paint has a fairly high cost, which really justifies its high quality indicators. To learn how to paint the ceiling with streak-free paint, be sure to purchase silicone pigment. So the surface will be even and smooth, without any smudges and defects.
  • silicate. This type is suitable for ceilings in technical rooms and on large industrial enterprises. The paint is able to protect the surface from the risk of mold, does not require additional antiseptic treatment, is suitable for swimming pools, garages, basements, warehouses, entrances, etc. Liquid glass (silicate) is taken as the basis for the manufacture of this type of paint, therefore these dyes have high rates of bactericidal and antiseptic properties.
  • Mineral. In the manufacture of this type, cement or slaked lime is used as the basis. In terms of properties and appearance, the paint is similar to ordinary whitewash, it has moisture resistance.
  • Polyvinyl acetate. Made on the basis of PVA glue, durable, resistant to moisture. However, this type of paint can leave marks during application and is difficult to erase, so you should be as careful and accurate as possible when painting.

As for the aesthetic side of the issue, ceiling paints are divided into:

How to choose a tool

The convenience and quality of tools for work determines the comfort of the staining process and the final result. The most important and necessary tool for painting the ceiling is a roller. There are many models that differ from each other not only in technological properties and functionality, as well as cost and quality indicators. The most common of them:

To understand how to properly paint the ceiling with a roller, when choosing a tool, you need to pay attention to the following nuances:

  • Check the quality of the tool by carefully inspecting all the seams and joints on the material. They should be almost invisible.
  • When choosing a fluffy roller, pay attention to the fluff, pull on them and see if any of them remain in your hand.
  • Remember that the quality of the paint will also be affected by the absorbency of the roller. Therefore, study the data about the manufacturer.

In addition to the paint roller for painting the ceiling, you will need:

  • Paint bath (tray with a relief bottom for rolling out the roller).
  • Sandpaper with a fine fraction.
  • Small spatula.
  • Masking paper tape.
  • Film made of polyethylene.
  • Stepladder or wide table.
  • Paint brushes of different sizes.

Surface preparation

The ceiling should be thoroughly cleaned of old traces of finishes: paint, plaster or. All protrusions must be carefully knocked down and cleaned off. If cracks are present, apply some primer and then coat the surface finishing layer putties. If strong differences in height and unevenness are visible on the ceiling, you will have to use plaster for leveling. At the same time, it is necessary to plaster in several layers in order to achieve the smoothest possible surface. Puttying the ceiling should be in the direction from the corner to the opposite wall. When the putty dries, it is primed, and then proceed to painting. How to properly prepare the surface and paint the ceiling with paint is shown in this video.

Primer

Applying a primer to the ceiling is mandatory and milestone preparatory phase. Thus, you will fix the result of putty or other old surface, increase adhesion, provide protection for the future paint layer from instant moisture absorption. The primer is also able to protect the surface from the possible appearance of mold and mildew. The application process is simple, you should ensure that there are no excess and unnecessary drops of soil on the ceiling.

The ceiling is usually primed in two layers, after which it is worth waiting for the primer to dry completely. The surface must then be sanded and all construction dust with a brush and a clean, dry cloth.

When preparing the ceiling, do not forget about the following nuances:

Coloring process

The ceiling is leveled and cleaned of dust, which means it is ready for painting. Water-based paint must be diluted, based on the proportions indicated on the package, and thoroughly mixed to a thick and uniform consistency.

Painting with water-based paint is one of the most popular ways to finish the ceiling. Simplicity is considered its advantage: a few strokes of the brush, and a neat, beautiful coating is ready. However, to achieve such a result, you need to strictly follow the technology. Let's talk about this in more detail.

Why water-based paint

Important! If the ceiling is very dark, be sure to lighten it before painting with an appropriate primer. Otherwise, the base will show through the paint and even 3 layers will not be enough to make the coating snow-white. The paint in this case must be chosen with high hiding power.

What tools are needed to paint the ceiling

For work, you should prepare:

  1. Roller with medium pile. A short pile can leave streaks, while a long pile will pick up a lot of paint. Masters do not recommend using foam or velor rollers.
  2. A small flute brush for processing the ceiling near the junction with the wall.
  3. Paint bath with corrugated bottom. You shouldn't neglect it. The cuvette, unlike other containers, will help to leave exactly as much paint as needed on the roller. This will help achieve an even layer without smudges.
  4. Fine sandpaper for grouting.
  5. Masking tape for pasting the borders of surfaces that do not require painting.
  6. If you do not plan to use a ladder or goats, then you will need a telescopic folding handle for a brush or roller, with which you can reach the ceiling.
  7. It is advisable to get a bright portable lamp in order to track the transitions of paint on the surface and monitor the uniformity of the applied layers.
  8. Water based paint.

If it is planned to paint the ceiling with colored paint, then the white composition must be diluted with a color scheme intended for water-based mixtures. When mixing, keep in mind that the dried surface will be a couple of tones lighter than liquid paint. The entire volume should be diluted: it is extremely difficult to get the same shade in different portions.

If you use shop tinting, write down the paint color code. In the case when you need the same shade, it will be enough to purchase the same paint with which the surface was painted earlier and tint it with the same shade. But it should be remembered that if the surface was painted for a long time, then the paint could burn out and lose its tone. In this case, choosing the same shade will be much more difficult. It may be easier to paint the entire surface entirely.

Stages of work

So, it's time to start painting. For best results, apply 3 coats to the ceiling.

Step 1. Mix the paint, add water to it, if necessary according to the instructions, knead, pour into the bath. If there is a lot of paint, then you can use an electric drill with a mixer nozzle to knead. This must be done at low speeds so as not to whip the paint into foam. Some paint formulations need to be filtered. This can be done with a nylon stocking or gauze.

Step 2. Brush over the corners and places near the joints with the walls along the perimeter of the ceiling. The strip should be as narrow as possible - 7-8 centimeters. Treat other hard-to-reach places behind radiator pipes, around wiring.

Step 3. Apply the first layer with a roller, applying stripes perpendicular to the window, from one wall to another. You need to paint with wide, confident movements, making parallel stripes, with an overlap of several centimeters. You should act quickly without respite and smoke breaks, otherwise the composition will lie unevenly in places of breaks.

Step 4. Wait until the first layer of paint dries (usually no more than 2 hours).

Step 5. Evaluate the result. After applying the first layer, it is still difficult to draw conclusions, but unpainted areas can already be seen.

Step 6. Apply a second coat of paint. Now the strips should be applied parallel to the window, that is, the layers of paint should be alternated in a perpendicular direction. Use a lamp to check the uniformity of the coating and gently tint the missing areas, if any.

Step 7. Wait for drying and apply the 3rd layer.

Important! When choosing the direction of staining, one must proceed from following principles: The last layer should be done moving towards the window, strokes along the sunlight, and each layer should be perpendicular to the previous one.

It is this application technique that will make it possible to make a smooth, clean, uniform ceiling. The last layer is best applied with a new roller.

The most common problems and how to solve them

Despite the apparent simplicity, painting the ceiling does not tolerate even the slightest negligence. Most often, ugly spots and stains remain on the surface, which appear especially clearly in bright light. The reasons are:

  • poor surface preparation (the ceiling is not level, contrasting spots remain);
  • non-compliance with the technology of painting.

In the first case, you will have to leave everything as it is, or peel off the paint to the ground and start work again. In the second, you can try to correct the situation: apply another layer of more liquid paint to the entire ceiling, after sanding the surface with fine sandpaper. Did not help? Everything will have to be redone. To prevent this from happening, when painting, you need to pay attention to such points:

  • the composition must be mixed very well, otherwise the tone of the ceiling may be heterogeneous;
  • the paint must soak the roller evenly, for which it must be dipped and squeezed several times until it has completely collected the mixture. They need to roll, not smear paint on the ceiling;
  • the paint should not be too thick, otherwise streaks may appear;
  • no need to evaluate the exact result before drying: a “wet” ceiling looks completely different than a dry one;
  • The next layer should be applied only after the previous one has completely dried.

Sometimes the paint starts peeling off. This is possible if during painting it was too thick, applied in a thick layer, or the ceiling was poorly prepared. It is necessary to remove the exfoliated material, rinse the surface, dry it, prime it and paint it again.
