Treat the entire table with large sandpaper, then carefully walk with fine sandpaper.
If you want to get to natural wood at an old painted table, you will need special formulations, removing the colorful coating, and a spatula.
Carefully dust the prepared product (a vacuum cleaner, a well-wrung cloth will come in handy).
After complete drying, cover the entire surface with a primer.
Turn the table over, paint the legs, underframe, underside of the tabletop with the main color, let the paint dry well.
Return the table to its traditional position, transfer the sketch to it with a pencil using a ruler.
Outline the borders of the first color spot with masking tape.

Paint over the resulting window (do not pick up too much paint on the brush, the uneven thickness of the paint layer leads to the formation of sagging, which will not add aesthetic appeal to the decoration object).
Carefully peel off the masking tape without waiting for the paint to dry to preserve the clarity of the border.
Continue coloring in sequence. Butt elements can only be filled after the previous element has completely dried and the masking tape has been glued along the joint line.
After your sketch is completely transferred to the surface of the table, leave the object to dry, and then (if you want to get glossy surface) varnish it.

Transparent top, tight bottom

An interesting option for decorating a table is to use the right size glass to create a "picture".

In the first case, collages of any images, old postcards, photographs, children's drawings, compositions of dried flowers, leaves, fans are placed under glass, cut exactly to the size of the tabletop. sheet music or pages of pre-revolutionary books. To do this, it is enough to decide what is available, choose the appropriate technique and recharge with determination by studying the proposed ideas. So, to your attention there are several options to make from an old coffee table at least an original interior decoration, and at a maximum a work of art.

Types of decorating a coffee table:

decoupage;
mosaic;
painting;
craquelure.

You can decorate a coffee table:

mirrors;
shells;
wooden blocks.

As they say, there would be a table. Even if it is old, creaking, nondescript, it can be an excellent basis for creating a new creative household item. Let's see how the masters do it.

Decoupage

Decoupage is the application of paper or fabric to a surface. To decorate a coffee table, its surface is pre-primed and sanded, and then coated with paint.

A layer of PVA glue is applied to the dried layer of paint, and on it:

decoupage card (finished parts);
a fragment of a paper napkin (previously freed from the second layer);
photos;
the cloth;
lace.

The entire dried image is covered with several layers of varnish. This technique allows you to give an original look to even the most ordinary wooden table. It will bloom like a lawn, turn into a map of the world or become a place to store old photographs.

The easiest option is to cover the table with wallpaper or cloth. It is important to fix the edges well and smooth the surface moistened with glue. Using pushpins (with a shiny one-piece hat), you can give the table a twist.

Mosaic

DIY coffee table decor can also be done with the help of mosaics. To do this, you need to prepare materials such as:

paint in a can;
sandpaper;
mesh tiles - mosaic;
glue;
grout.

Of the tools, you can not do without a brush for applying glue, a spatula and scissors.

1. Cover the table with paint and let it dry well.

2. Cover the place for applying the tile pattern with glue.

3. Apply the prepared tile fragment, press it down and let it dry too.

4. The seams between the tiles must be carefully treated with grout, and then washed off the surface of the tile.

Tip: before grouting, cover the table surface well, on which there are no tiles.

Get an original and practical table. If you master the technique, then you can take on more complex patterns.

painting

For this we need:

paint white and red;
paper stencil;

1. We clean all the irregularities on the surface of the table, prime and grind if necessary.

2. We cover the product with white paint and let it dry.

3. We prepare a stencil. To do this, we print the drawing (black and white can be) on large format paper (the smaller the drawing, the easier it is). Cut out the pattern with a knife.

4. We fix the stencil on the tabletop, carefully close all the other elements of the table and apply red paint.

5. After drying, the stencil is removed, and if necessary, the edges of the image are summed up with a brush or contour.

6. The use of varnish and paint polish will make the drawing more vivid and shiny.

Craquelure

Craquelure is a method of artificial aging of the surface, when either craquelure varnish or improvised means such as egg white, PVA glue, vinegar or gelatin is applied to a not completely frozen layer of paint. The technique allows to achieve the appearance of a cracking effect on the surface. Cracks, depending on the materials, can be very different - from large to the smallest cobweb. The use of 2 contrasting colors looks good. The second layer is applied after the first has dried slightly.

Mirrors

In a modern interior, a mirrored table will look great. To make it, you will need:

base box made of chipboard;
silver (paint in a spray can);
mirrors;
liquid Nails.

1. We knock together a base box of any suitable size from plywood or chipboard. We pay special attention to the places where the sheets are fastened.

2. We cover the entire structure with silver.

3. We cut out on our own or order 5 mirrors in the workshop, corresponding to the area of the edges of the box.

4. We glue mirrors on liquid nails.

5. Carefully remove traces of glue.

6. We fix the mirrors until dry with masking tape.

shells

Shells in the interior are always a reminder of summer and the romance of the sea coast.

Shells decorate finished glass tables with a double bottom. But you can try and build such a table yourself from wood, bamboo, twine and glass, decorating it with shells.

From the materials you will need:

plywood (sheet thickness - 2-3 cm);
thick glass (at least 1 cm);
thick and thin bamboo sticks;
twine (2-3 m);
silicone gaskets;
fastening tools (nails and screws).

1. Decide on the size of the future table.

2. Cut out a piece of glass and plywood of the same size. If the base is already there, then plywood is not needed.

3. We attach a bamboo frame to the base of the table or a plywood blank (we use bamboo with a large diameter).

4. Along the edge of the plywood or the existing surface of the table, we nail the twine with small nails.

5. Bamboo and twine are varnished.

6. We drill holes in the bamboo frame for attaching silicone gaskets (at least 2 holes on each side).

7. In the resulting niche inside the bamboo frame, we beautifully lay out shells, corals, natural and artificial stones.

8. To give style to the whole structure, we decorate the legs of the table with thin bamboo.

wooden blocks

1. We prepare a wooden or plywood box of the right size. Its bottom bottom should recede from the walls by 10 cm.

2. We measure its height and add 2 cm. This will be the length of the blanks that need to be cut from the log.

3. After the log is sawn, each piece is sanded to remove roughness.

5. To finish the countertop, the log is cut into identical blanks 2 cm thick. They are laid out on the table, having previously lubricated each with glue.

6. The holes between the blanks are overwritten.

7. The finished table is once again treated with sandpaper, and then varnished.

8. The design will turn out to be heavy, so it is better to equip it with wheels.

Decorative coffee tables will be especially appropriate in the country or in a country cottage. They are easy to make and look very classy! At the same time, you can experiment with the location of the pads.

Veneering

If a coffee table in a classic style fits better into your interior and you already have a table, only its surface has worn out, then you can easily change it. For this, veneer is used. This is the gluing of thin sheets of veneer onto the surface, which is performed by hot and cold methods. Thus, any type of wood can be imitated.

An important condition for achieving a good result will be the presence of screw wyms or presses, which are used in the more appropriate cold veneering method at home. But you can also apply veneer using PVA glue and an iron. To do this, the surface is smeared with glue, wait until it dries, a sheet of veneer is laid, a white sheet of paper is on top, and a hot iron is already being carried out on top. It is important here not to allow the veneer to swell, and in case of bubbles, to get rid of them correctly. To do this, a small hole is made in the bubble with a needle, through which excess air or glue is expelled. Then this place is additionally processed with an iron. After the veneer is applied, the edges are carefully cut and sanded. The last stage is varnishing the product.
