DIY coffee table decor

The word "decor" means decoration. Having at hand paints, wallpapers, pictures, mosaics, natural materials, you can decorate any piece of furniture, and even more so original decor coffee table.

To do this, it is enough to decide what is available, choose suitable technique and recharge your mind by exploring the ideas offered. So, to your attention there are several options to make at least from an old coffee table - original decoration interior, and as a maximum - a work of art.

Types of decorating a coffee table:

Decorate Coffee table ik can:

As they say, there would be a table. Even if it is old, creaking, nondescript, it can be an excellent basis for creating a new creative household item. Let's see how the masters do it.

Decoupage is the application of paper or fabric to a surface. To decorate a coffee table, its surface is pre-primed and sanded, and then coated with paint.

A layer of PVA glue is applied to the dried layer of paint, and on it:

  • decoupage card (finished parts);
  • a fragment of a paper napkin (previously freed from the second layer);
  • photos;
  • the cloth;
  • lace.

The entire dried image is covered with several layers of varnish. This technique allows you to give original look even the most ordinary wooden table. It will bloom like a lawn, turn into a map of the world or become a place to store old photographs.

The easiest option is to paste over the table with wallpaper or cloth. It is important to fix the edges well and smooth the surface moistened with glue. Using pushpins (with a shiny one-piece hat), you can give the table a twist.

A separate article is devoted to decoupage of a coffee table.

Mosaic

DIY coffee table decor can also be done with the help of mosaics. To do this, you need to prepare materials such as:

  • paint in a can;
  • sandpaper;
  • mesh tiles - mosaic;
  • glue;
  • grout.

Of the tools, you can not do without a brush for applying glue, a spatula and scissors.

1. Cover the table with paint and let it dry well.

2. Cover the place for applying the tile pattern with glue.

3. Apply the prepared tile fragment, press it down and let it dry too.

4. The seams between the tiles must be carefully treated with grout, and then washed off the surface of the tile.

Tip: before grouting, cover the table surface well, on which there are no tiles.

Get an original and practical table. If you master the technique, then you can take on more complex patterns.

painting

With paint you can decorate everything! It is enough to have 2 contrasting colors to create a bright pattern. Here you can show your talent and paint the table manually, or you can make a stencil and apply an image on it. It can be butterflies, flowers, ornaments and much more. Your attention - contrasts when decorating a coffee table with your own hands: a red star on a white background.

For this we need:

  • paint white and red;
  • paper stencil;

1. We clean all the irregularities on the surface of the table, prime and grind if necessary.

2. We cover the product with white paint and let it dry.

3. We prepare a stencil. To do this, we print the drawing (black and white can be) on large format paper (the smaller the drawing, the easier it is). Cut out the pattern with a knife.

4. We fix the stencil on the tabletop, carefully close all the other elements of the table and apply red paint.

5. After drying, the stencil is removed, and if necessary, the edges of the image are summed up with a brush or contour.

6. The use of varnish and paint polish will make the drawing more vivid and shiny.

Craquelure

Craquelure is a method of artificial aging of the surface, when either craquelure varnish or improvised means such as egg white, PVA glue, vinegar or gelatin. The technique allows to achieve the appearance of a cracking effect on the surface. Cracks, depending on the materials, can be very different - from large to the smallest cobweb. The use of 2 contrasting colors looks good. The second layer is applied after the first has dried slightly.

To make a decorative coffee table, you can combine craquelure and decoupage techniques. In this case, the cracking effect can cover the entire surface, on top of which drawings from napkins are applied using the decoupage technique, and then varnish is applied.

Mirrors

V modern interior A mirrored table would look great. To make it, you will need:

  • base box made of chipboard;
  • silver (paint in a spray can);
  • mirrors;
  • liquid Nails.

1. We knock together from plywood or chipboard a box-base of any right size. Special attention we give places for fastening sheets.

2. We cover the entire structure with silver.

3. We cut out on our own or order 5 mirrors in the workshop, corresponding to the area of the edges of the box.

4. We glue mirrors on liquid nails.

5. Carefully remove traces of glue.

6. We fix the mirrors until dry with masking tape.

shells

Shells in the interior are always a reminder of summer and the romance of the sea coast.

Shells decorate finished glass tables with a double bottom. But you can try and build such a table yourself from wood, bamboo, twine and glass, decorating it with shells.

From the materials you will need:

  • plywood (sheet thickness - 2-3 cm);
  • thick glass (at least 1 cm);
  • thick and thin bamboo sticks;
  • twine (2-3 m);
  • silicone gaskets;
  • fastening tools (nails and screws).

1. Decide on the size of the future table.

2. Cut out a piece of glass and plywood of the same size. If the base is already there, then plywood is not needed.

3. We attach a bamboo frame to the base of the table or a plywood blank (we use bamboo with a large diameter).

4. Along the edge of the plywood or the existing surface of the table, we nail the twine with small nails.

5. Bamboo and twine are varnished.

6. We drill holes in the bamboo frame for attaching silicone gaskets (at least 2 holes on each side).

7. In the resulting niche inside the bamboo frame, we beautifully lay out shells, corals, natural and artificial stones.

8. To give style to the whole structure, we decorate the legs of the table with thin bamboo.

wooden blocks

An excellent table made of blocks will suit the interior, where there are many colors, and the decoration is made with natural materials. Before decorating a coffee table, you will need to pick up a dry, even, without extra knots birch log, the diameter of which is about 10 cm.

1. Prepare a wooden or plywood box right size. Its bottom bottom should recede from the walls by 10 cm.

2. We measure its height and add 2 cm. This will be the length of the blanks that need to be cut from the log.

3. After the log is sawn, each piece is sanded to remove roughness.

4. The bars are installed on the protruding part of the bottom of the box, along the perimeter. To do this, they are put on glue (the bottom and the side adjacent to the box are coated) and fastened together.

5. To finish the countertop, the log is cut into identical blanks 2 cm thick. They are laid out on the table, having previously lubricated each with glue.

6. The holes between the blanks are overwritten.

7. The finished table is once again treated with sandpaper, and then varnished.

8. The design will turn out to be heavy, so it is better to equip it with wheels.

Decorative coffee tables will be especially appropriate in the country or in country cottage. They are easy to make and look very classy! At the same time, you can experiment with the location of the pads.

Veneering

If a coffee table fits into your interior better in classical style and you already have a table, only its surface has worn out, then it can be easily changed. For this, veneer is used. This is the gluing of thin sheets of veneer onto the surface, which is performed by hot and cold methods. Thus, any type of wood can be imitated.

An important condition for achieving a good result will be the presence of screw wyms or presses, which are used in the more appropriate cold veneering method at home. But you can also apply veneer using PVA glue and an iron. To do this, the surface is smeared with glue, wait until it dries, lay a sheet of veneer, on top White list paper, and the top is already carried out with a hot iron. It is important here not to allow the veneer to swell, and in case of bubbles, to get rid of them correctly. To do this, a small hole is made in the bubble with a needle, through which excess air or glue is expelled. Then this place is additionally processed with an iron. After the veneer is applied, the edges are carefully cut and sanded. The last stage is varnishing the product.

The decor of the coffee tables, the photos of which we have shown you, is quite accessible even to a novice master. A few trial lessons and we are sure your coffee table will turn out even better!

The festive table is not only unusual dishes, but also bright dishes and original decorations. And if a snow-white tablecloth is enough for an adult holiday and plates, wine glasses and napkins that match it in style and color, then the design of the table for the child’s birthday needs to be thought out more carefully.

Old new table - restoration and renovation with your own hands

Indeed, for children, the feeling of a holiday is much more important than culinary delights.

Where small children will eat, it is better not to put a starched lace tablecloth, especially if it is white. It is better to dwell on more practical options:

Insofar as we are talking about a children's holiday, you must definitely take care of safety.

Toddlers are restless people, they will jump up, spin and spin all the time. If the oilcloth or tablecloth is not firmly fixed, it may soon end up on the floor along with the entire serving. Therefore, right on the surface of the table in the corners, you need to glue pieces of double-sided tape, and then the fabric, paper or polyethylene will firmly adhere to it.

Dishes and napkins

Table decoration for a children's birthday can even be dishes, if they are bright. It is better to leave a porcelain service for adult events, and offer children disposable plates with drawings and plastic cups.

  1. Large napkins are placed under the plates. If the plate is with a pattern, then it is better to use a plain napkin. And for plain dishes, you can make a napkin with an applique.
  2. From colored paper, cut out the contours of cupcakes and cakes.
  3. Glue them to a paper napkin on one side.
  4. Place a plate on top so that the corner with the application is visible.
  5. Also, figures are sometimes cut out of large square napkins: snowflakes, the contours of the head of some animal (for example, bears or monkeys), cars, etc.

    or simply beautifully fold napkins, as for adult celebrations.

As for the cups, there are two ways to go: take ready-made paper or plastic cups with a pattern, or arrange ordinary white ones. What is used for decoration?

  • ribbons - they are tied around a glass and made into bows;
  • pictures cut out from somewhere and glued to a glass;
  • colored paper - you can cut out eyes, a nose and a mouth from it, stick it to a glass and get a funny muzzle;
  • paints used to paint white cardboard cups.

If you decide to use paint, then it is better to take acrylic - it will not remain in the hands of the kids.

Sometimes glass bottles or jars are used as glasses. They stick strips of paper with the name of the guest on them so that the children do not mix up who drank from what.

Accessories

How beautiful to decorate the table for a child's birthday, what else but compulsory subjects will help create a festive atmosphere?

  1. Balls.

    Balloons are filled with helium, bundled (3-5 balloons each) and tied with a long ribbon to something heavy in the center of the table or in several places. Sometimes the names of the guests are written on the balls and each of them is tied to a chair on which the little guest will sit.

  2. Birthday hats.

    They are placed next to the plates, and are also used as bags, where sweets or multi-colored popcorn are poured.

  3. Name cards. If each plate (or next to it) put a card with the name of the guest, this will make the children feel like important people at the holiday. Cards can be made in the form of postcards or simply write a name on a piece of beautiful cardboard and attach it with tape or a stapler to a napkin.
  4. Checkboxes.

    Paper or cloth flags are attached to a cord that can be hung both above the dining area and along the edges of the tablecloth. Be sure to ensure that the colors of the flags match the theme of the event: for marine style blue, light blue and white striped flags will do, and for a birthday in the style of a little princess, it is worth cutting flags in the form of crowns.

  5. Letters. Now it is very fashionable to decorate the table with letters.

    This can be the name of the hero of the occasion on a stand, individual letters randomly laid out among plates and glasses, from which you can collect the name of the birthday man or the phrase “happy birthday”, as well as letters written on cardboard and stuck in treats.

For children's holiday you can think of a lot different options design.

But before you decorate the table for a child's birthday, you must definitely consult with the baby. Perhaps he will suggest some idea, or vice versa - he will categorically refuse what adults have already come up with.

painted table - big table for meetings, located in Dragonstone Castle. This is a unique piece of furniture that belonged to Aegon the Conqueror and was made to order. Ægon used this table when planning the Conquest of Westeros. The hall of the castle, in which the Painted Table stands, is located at the top of the Stone Drum Tower and is simply called the Chamber of the Painted Table.

The walls of the Chamber are oriented to the cardinal points, each has a large pointed window.

It's massive wooden structure, covered with varnish that has darkened with time. Its shape exactly reproduces the map of Westeros, with all capes and bays; a table about fifty feet long, about 25 feet wide at its widest point, and no more than four at its narrowest point, apparently at the site of the Isthmus.

The tabletop depicts various places and lands - cities and castles, mountains and rivers - where they are in the real Westeros.

DIY table decor - 2 master classes

The painted table serves and political map- it depicts the seven independent kingdoms that existed before the Conquest, but the boundaries between them are not marked.

It is unknown if this means that King's Landing and other cities that did not exist before the Conquest are also not marked on the table.

Chairman's seat - a chair with high back- is located near the long edge of the table approximately in the middle, exactly in the same place where the Dragonstone itself is located off the coast of Westeros. From here you can see the entire map. It was in the Chamber of the Painted Table that the aged Aegon the Conqueror, in 37 A.D., while telling his grandchildren of the Conquest, suffered a stroke, shortly after which he died.

"Seven Kingdoms" is a misnomer. Aegon knew it three hundred years ago, standing in this very spot. This map was made on his orders. It marks rivers and bays, hills and mountains, castles, towns and cities... but it has no borders. This is one country, and one king must rule it. Stannis Baratheon // A Storm of Swords, John II

Sometimes the interior of the home begins to seem boring and pretty fed up. You can solve this problem by starting a major renovation, purchasing new furniture, or at least moving the old one from its usual place to a new one. But a little time passes, and again I want something new, but there is no desire to invest in updating the situation. In such cases, you can change appearance old furniture: do the decor of the table with your own hands, repaint it, paint it or put it in mosaic. Even such an insignificant and cost-free alteration will bring a fresh touch to the decoration of the house and give positive emotions during and after work.

A coffee table with monochrome photos and drawings will stand out against the general background of the interior. Black and white colors with shades of silver will add mystery to it.

What will help restore the old table?

No matter how the table is decorated, before starting work, you need to completely remove the old paintwork, which may have cracks, bubbles, or chips. To apply a new decorative layer, the most even surface is required. Therefore, among the tools you will need different and slightly unexpected things:

  • spatulas (metal and rubber);
  • household sponge (made of metal fibers and foam rubber with a hard layer);
  • sandpaper;
  • toothbrush, needle or toothpicks;
  • nail polish remover;
  • wood glue;
  • putty, adhesive ceramic tiles;
  • ruler, corner, pencil;
  • paints and varnishes;
  • brushes;
  • gloves, respirator

It will take some effort to remove the varnish from the surface of the table. by the most in a simple way will be applying a special gel and removing the softened layer. It is convenient to remove varnish from the joints of parts with a hard toothbrush or a needle.

After removing the varnish, the surfaces are carefully treated with sandpaper or a steel sponge. To protect the lungs from inhalation of dust, you need to take care of purchasing a respirator in advance. The prepared table can be re-decorated in a variety of ways.

You came up with a fantasy to decorate old home furniture with my own hands? Get down to business - the result is worth it. You'll get new item interior, completely different from the rest, and spend time realizing the craving for creativity that is in every person. It is best to start an artistic experiment with a simple object that has a small, flat surface, i.e. think over and execute the decor of the table. And then, having tried some tricks, improving your skills, you can move on to decorating more complex objects.

We draw up an action plan

Any work, especially if you are doing it for the first time, requires a clear plan. By following simple individual points, it will be easier for you to achieve desired result. Imagine yourself as a commander, developing the course of the upcoming battle according to all the rules of martial art. To win, you need to have a clear understanding of the terrain, think over the strategy, attract the necessary manpower, deliver ammunition, and also choose the right time to attack.

After drawing analogies, make up your own algorithm of actions:

  • Determine which table you will decorate (kitchen or writing, outdoor or indoor).
  • Browse illustrated magazines or photos on interior sites - choose interesting samples.
  • Study in theory your favorite decor method.
  • Prepare necessary materials and tools.
  • Take on board the phrase from the movie "Magicians" by the Strugatsky brothers "The main thing is to believe in yourself, not to see obstacles" and you will succeed.

Choosing a decoration method

Decoration options horizontal surface so many that lovers of painting, compilers of collages, collectors of all stripes, masters of assembling a single whole from pieces will find suitable for themselves. The decor of a wooden table with their own hands will be completely mastered by beginners, and for "advanced users" the creation of such interior objects can be an opportunity to make a special gift to a friend, close person or relatives. In this case, it is necessary to take into account the style characteristics of the furnishings of the apartments of these people.

Attention! The decor method should be selected based on the location of the table and the degree of its operation.

Decoupage is not suitable for a country table for family meals in the open air. In this case, it is required durable coating resistant to atmospheric precipitation and abrasion. The game or computer table in the nursery is also subjected to heavy loads, so it must be decorated so that the mother’s heart does not hurt when the child “barbarously” draws directly on the surface or sticks plasticine to it. On the other hand, cabinet, boudoir or sofa tables can be decorated more “gently”, because. their use does not imply large loads.

Everyone is an artist at heart

The easiest way to give an old table new life is to use paint. There are many decoration options available:

  • full monochromatic coloring (a bright small table will become the accent of a room decorated in modern styles)
  • geometric coloring in different colors (in this case, the table decor involves a combination of stripes, squares, other shapes, visual illusions can be created on its surface, and the legs with the underframe can be painted in the main color)
  • applying a contrasting stencil pattern to a plain surface (patterns in the form of borders are used, individual elements, central volume rosette, fonts)
  • art painting a la Art Nouveau, Provence, Art Nouveau, variations of Russian or oriental styles(if you do not feel the talent of an artist in yourself to draw freely in the manner you like, start copying, choosing a suitable ornamental motif)

To apply a geometric pattern, you will need: a simple pencil, a ruler, sandpaper (coarse and fine-grained), a primer, quick-drying wood paint, masking tape, flat brushes of various widths.

Attention! If the color spots are very voluminous, use small rollers with the finest sponge. A roller with pile or large pores will leave visible marks on the surface. However, if your goal is an additional relief effect, then such a tool will allow you to get it.

We work according to the plan - we get a unique interior object

Having prepared necessary tools To give the table a new look, follow these steps in sequence:

  • Sketch the drawing.
  • Treat the entire table with large sandpaper, then carefully walk with fine sandpaper.
  • If you want to get to natural wood at an old painted table, you will need special formulations, removing the colorful coating, and a spatula.
  • Carefully dust the prepared product (a vacuum cleaner, a well-wrung cloth will come in handy).
  • After complete drying, cover the entire surface with a primer.
  • Turn the table over, paint the legs, underframe, underside of the tabletop with the main color, let the paint dry well.
  • Return the table to its traditional position, transfer the sketch to it with a pencil using a ruler.
  • Outline the borders of the first color spot with masking tape.
  • Paint over the resulting window (do not pick up too much paint on the brush, the uneven thickness of the paint layer leads to the formation of sagging, which will not add aesthetic appeal to the decoration object).
  • Carefully peel off the masking tape without waiting for the paint to dry to preserve the clarity of the border.
  • Continue coloring in sequence. Butt elements can only be filled after the previous element has completely dried and the masking tape has been glued along the joint line.
  • After your sketch is completely transferred to the surface of the table, leave the object to dry, and then (if you want to get glossy surface) varnish it.

Transparent top, tight bottom

An interesting option for decorating a table is to use the right size glass to create a "picture".

In the first case, collages of any images, old postcards, photographs, children's drawings, compositions of dried flowers, leaves, fans are placed under glass, cut exactly to the size of the tabletop. sheet music or pages of pre-revolutionary books. Thick glass tightly presses the "exposure", its elements can hardly be glued together. Raising the glass, it is easy to replace the boring visual range and place a new selection in a conspicuous place.

The old table, if it is still functional, easily turns into a new one. The result may even exceed your expectations, because new table will be brighter, more original and, most importantly, positively charged by your creativity. Stock up on inspiration simple materials and go ahead, embody ideas!

Note before the start: in almost all cases, the table needs to be prepared for transformation. Wipe it with a sandpaper, clean it of dust and degrease with alcohol or special means.

Paint with stripes

Painting is one of the fastest and most effective techniques in furniture decor. To make it more interesting, we suggest making the table striped. Masking tape will help to get the job done smoothly: paint the table in the main color, and then stick strips of tape and apply a couple of layers of a different color. Peel off the tape - the effect is ready. Can be repeated many times to make stripes different colors and width. Do not forget to varnish everything for reliability. TIn the same way, you can create zigzags, for example.

Paint with slate paint

Painted with a special slate paint the table will be laconic black or dark green. But now you can leave notes and draw with crayons right on the table. How easy is it to play board games where you have to record points! The table itself can serve as a field for tic-tac-toe or a gallows.

Paste over with a film

The film can also be not simple, but slate or even with the effect of a white marker board. Over a table with a pattern of triangular pieces of film, as in the photo below, you will have to tinker longer, but the result will be very stylish!

Stripes with colored tape

A striped table can be made not only with the help of painting. Lines of decorative tape or electrical tape in different colors and patterns will make the table bright, shiny and elegant. This is perfect for a nursery or will add a touch of mischief to an adult interior.

tile

Ceramic tile or mosaic will make the countertop not only beautiful, but also very practical, because the tile is not afraid of moisture and is easy to clean. The principle is the same as with walls: tile adhesive plus grout. You can take a whole tile, or you can beat it for the effect of a Spanish mosaic. You will find more creative ideas from leftover tiles.

Cover with book pages

Choose your favorite book and give it a second life: glue each page to the table with PVA glue. Several layers of varnish (preferably from a can) will make the surface smooth and ennoble the color. It's a good idea to take dictionary pages or sheet music.

romantic lace

A simple technique will help to make the tabletop more elegant - coloring through lace. To do this, you need to take a lace doily or tulle that you don’t mind ruining, put it on the table on top of the base coat of paint and apply a different color on top. It is better to use a sponge or spray paint so that the image does not smear from the movements of the roller.

The word "decor" means decoration. Having at hand paints, wallpapers, pictures, mosaics, natural materials, you can decorate any piece of furniture, and even more so, make an original decor for a coffee table.

To do this, it is enough to decide what is available, choose the appropriate technique and recharge with determination by studying the proposed ideas. So, to your attention there are several options to make from an old coffee table at least an original interior decoration, and at a maximum a work of art.

Types of decorating a coffee table:

  • decoupage;
  • mosaic;
  • painting;
  • craquelure.

You can decorate a coffee table:

  • mirrors;
  • shells;
  • wooden blocks.

As they say, there would be a table. Even if it is old, creaking, nondescript, it can be an excellent basis for creating a new creative household item. Let's see how the masters do it.

Decoupage

Decoupage is the application of paper or fabric to a surface. To decorate a coffee table, its surface is pre-primed and sanded, and then coated with paint.

A layer of PVA glue is applied to the dried layer of paint, and on it:

  • decoupage card (finished parts);
  • a fragment of a paper napkin (previously freed from the second layer);
  • photos;
  • the cloth;
  • lace.

The entire dried image is covered with several layers of varnish. This technique allows you to give an original look to even the most ordinary wooden table. It will bloom like a lawn, turn into a map of the world or become a place to store old photographs.

The easiest option is to cover the table with wallpaper or cloth.

  • paint in a can;
  • sandpaper;
  • mesh tiles - mosaic;
  • glue;

  • paint white and red;
  • paper stencil;

Craquelure

Craquelure is a method of artificial aging of the surface, when either craquelure varnish or improvised means such as egg white, PVA glue, vinegar or gelatin is applied to a not completely frozen layer of paint.

Mirrors

In a modern interior, a mirrored table will look great. To make it, you will need:

  • base box made of chipboard;
  • silver (paint in a spray can);
  • mirrors;
  • liquid Nails.

1. We knock together a base box of any suitable size from plywood or chipboard. We pay special attention to the places where the sheets are fastened.

  • plywood (sheet thickness - 2-3 cm);
  • thick glass (at least 1 cm);
  • thick and thin bamboo sticks;
  • twine (2-3 m);
  • silicone gaskets;

1. We prepare a wooden or plywood box of the right size.

Decorative coffee tables will be especially appropriate in the country or in a country cottage. They are easy to make and look very classy! At the same time, you can experiment with the location of the pads.

Veneering

If a coffee table in a classic style fits better into your interior and you already have a table, only its surface has worn out, then you can easily change it.

To do this, the surface is smeared with glue, wait until it dries, a sheet of veneer is laid, a white sheet of paper is on top, and a hot iron is already being carried out on top.
