For example, to eliminate scratches, it is necessary to remove a layer of varnish on defective places, and then apply a new one. This method is quite effective and allows you to get rid of any scratches. But not only scratches are a problem for lacquered furniture. The next disadvantage that may appear over time is darkening. lacquered surface. As a result of clouding of the surface of the countertop, appearance the table begins to lose significantly in relation to other furniture. Such a defect is corrected in a similar way: removing the old layer of varnish and re-applying a new one. This method is quite simple, and it is quite possible to varnish old table with your own hands.

The sequence of restoration work

You can update an old lacquered table in several stages. But first you should prepare some tools and materials and think about your safety. So, let's get acquainted in detail with the algorithm for performing work on the restoration of a varnished table.

Determining the degree of wear

Before restoring the varnish on the table, you should initially assess the degree of defects formed.

Choosing a material

The question arises how to remove the varnish from the table. To ensure the quality of the restoration, it is necessary to choose the right materials. Many people think that problem areas can be removed with alcohol. In some cases, minor defects can indeed be applied with alcohol, but unforeseen consequences may occur, such as roughness, light areas, and so on. Therefore, we will focus on specialized materials that will be good helpers for beginners.

  • Shellac polish. Such material not only helps to restore the surface, but emphasize its originality. This is one of the oldest and most proven materials. The consistency of the polish is more like a liquid than a varnish. To achieve a high-quality result, this composition is applied about 50 - 60 layers. It is because of this that the original deep color is achieved. This is very good option, which will allow you to remove scratches on a varnished table.
  • Nitrocellulose varnish. This solution is used to restore large surfaces of the table. For its application, sprayers are used, which provide a very fast and uniform spray. At a lower speed, the droplets of the solution begin to solidify, and it will be quite difficult to achieve the desired effect of a smooth and uniform surface. That is why the use of standard spray guns is not recommended, which additionally form air bubbles, which are almost impossible to get rid of.
  • Pentaphthal varnish. This perfect material for the restoration of the table, as it is quite simple to use. It does not require special devices for application and dries fairly quickly. Apply it in at least 4 layers. It is possible to exclude the purchase of primer solutions, since the first layer of pentaphthalic varnish will act as a primer. After applying the composition and its complete drying, grinding should be done.

After you have decided on the choice of the restoration composition, you need to pay attention to such a moment as the definition of color. You can use a colorless varnish, or you can purchase a varnish that mimics the color of any wood. In the second case, it is necessary to correctly determine the tone of the varnish.

Step-by-step instruction

Let's bring detailed instructions, which will answer the question of how to properly varnish a wooden table. It consists of several stages:

  • The preparatory stage consists of the following aspects:
  • the surface of the table is thoroughly cleaned with a specialized composition or with ordinary warm water;
  • remove the damaged layer with a scraper;
  • we begin to grind the surface with sandpaper until it becomes dull;
  • clean the surface from dust.
  • Applying varnish to water based:
  • the surface is covered with several layers of water-based varnish;
  • each subsequent layer is applied after the previous one has completely dried;
  • after last layer completely dry, perform surface grinding;
  • clean the surface from dust.
  • Performing work with acrylic-based varnish:
  • initially we choose a varnish that matches the surface of the table in terms of shade and gloss;
  • diluting the varnish by 15% with white spirit, we prime the surface;
  • after the primer layer has dried, we perform intermediate grinding;
  • we cover the surface of the table with undiluted varnish in several layers, allowing the previous layer to dry first;
  • We perform surface polishing.
  • Please note that after applying all layers to give the surface a glossy sheen, the surface should be sanded.

Then start decorating. Conventionally, all methods of decorating a wooden table can be divided into two groups:

    Surface painting, including self-painting, coloring through a stencil or using stamps;

    Surface pasting special materials - wallpaper, self-adhesive film, decoupage with napkins or interesting clippings, pasting with leaf, photo printing, the use of mosaics or tiles.

The glass table will have to be updated a little differently. It is quite possible to glue it with wallpaper, film or decoupage from the inside.

You can also paint the glass surface with special paints and get an interesting design.

How to update a glass table?

Beautiful glass coffee table fairly common in modern apartments. As a result of improper care glass top loses its attractive appearance.

The legs are loosened, chips and scratches appear on the glass. If scratches have formed on the countertop that can fit a nail, then it is better to give the table to a special workshop, dispose of it or replace the glass with a new one.

If the damage is not so terrible, then you can try to reanimate this piece of furniture.

You can save a glass countertop from scratches at home as improvised (toothpaste, soda, transparent nail polish), and by special means(GOI paste, car polishes, polishing agents for precious metals).

First you need to clean the surface, then gently rub or apply the composition into the scratch. Do not overdo it, otherwise, instead of one scratch, you can get several more. Wait a little for the composition to set and clean the glass again.

To get rid of scratches, use the most ordinary, non-gel toothpaste. Soda is dissolved with water to the state of slurry, approximately in a ratio of 1: 1. GOI paste must be used proven, real. Clear varnish will not completely eliminate the problem, but only partially. At a certain angle of illumination, it will be noticeable that there were scratches in that place.

Wobbling table legs are also repairable. Usually, table legs are attached with special glue. This glue may dry out over time. It can be removed and replaced with a new adhesive. If the legs are attached to screws, self-tapping screws, then they can be untwisted and replaced with new ones.

Now the table can be given a completely new sound with the help of various decorating techniques:

    Paste the table from the wrong side with a decorative film. When pasting the table with a film, do not allow the formation of bubbles. It is better to glue the film little by little, gradually moving the substrate away. If bubbles still appear, then you can pierce them with a needle and smooth them out;

    Make decoupage. To do this, you will need pictures (for example, from napkins or on rice paper, or images specially prepared for this), PVC glue or special for these works, brushes, a file, decoupage varnish. The necessary equipment can be purchased at craft and scrapbooking stores;

    Paint with stained glass paints. Acrylic contour, stained glass paints, cotton swabs and napkins, alcohol for degreasing the surface, a sketch of a drawing, adhesive tape - this is a set of items that will be needed for this work;

    Fix the backlight around the perimeter of the table, led strip;

    If the design allows, make a mini-garden, an aquarium or a bright composition of stones, shells. When the table has a small box that is covered with a tabletop on top, you can lay a pallet on its bottom and plant succulents there (plants that do not need frequent watering). Or decorate the box with shells, stones or other things.

How to restore a wooden table?

Wooden table can be made from MDF or chipboard, or from solid wood. In any case, the restoration of the old table at home will take place in several stages. Let's take a look at all these steps.

    Preparatory- check all fastenings, disassemble the table and re-fix, clean the surface.

    Removing the old cover. Sometimes it just takes special compound, which removes varnish, paint. But most often you also have to use coarse-grained and fine-grained sandpaper, grinder. You need to sand along the fibers, in order to avoid the formation of new scratches.

    Repair of cracks and chips. To do this, you need wood putty or a polyester equivalent. After puttying, re-sanding. At this stage, you can stop and not carry out further work (except for varnishing), cover the wood with stain, which will give the table new color and view. For example, turn an oak table into an imitation of wenge or another type of wood. But when the damage is significant, the next stage is necessary.

    Priming and subsequent puttying. Without a primer, the varnish will lie poorly and unevenly. For wood, an alkyd or shellac primer is suitable.

    Giving the final design. At this stage, painting, pasting the table is carried out. If the table is to be painted, the paint must be applied in at least 2 coats.

    Final coating with varnish or wax. Lacquer and wax must be covered in several layers.

This refurbished polished table will last for years to come.

Written or magazine, children's or toilet - regardless of its purpose, it will become an interior decoration, because you spent so much time on it and put your soul into it.

How to repaint?

Table painting is the most popular way of restoration. What could be more concise than a white table? Only black. Therefore, the choice of paint (acrylic or oil, enamel) is very important. It depends on what kind of paint the repair was made, or rather on its characteristics, how long the restored table will last.

To choose the paint, you need to understand where and how the table will be used, what materials it is made of.

    Water-dispersion acrylic paint suitable for heated rooms, withstands moisture well. Dries quickly. Can be washed off with water during application. But after drying, it is not affected by water. Alkyd compounds are considered more reliable.

    Oil paints lose their popularity due to unreasonably high consumption.

    Enamels for wood attract with their glossy surface and high performance. Nitro-enamel paints also set quickly.

The paint is selected and purchased, further repair of the table involves painting it.

Surfaces must be pre-treated, cleaned, old coating removed, scratches and chips removed, puttied, primed, protected decorative inserts, for example, glass, adhesive tape. And only after the primer has dried, you can paint.

To give an even color, the paint is applied in several layers. The first layer is actually rubbed into the surface.

Two or three coats is enough to bring out the rich color.

To apply an additional pattern to the countertop, you can use pre-prepared stencils or the most common tulle. When the base color has dried, the tulle (or stencil) is fixed and the pattern is painted. You can do this with a brush, but it is better to use a sponge or a can of paint. Ready product, to give greater aesthetics and strengthen the surface, varnished.

To give a graphic pattern (lines, zigzags, rhombuses, squares), you can use adhesive tape. Mark the future drawing with adhesive tape, apply the first color with paint. If necessary, repeat the procedure with other colors. Varnish the finished tabletop.

If it is necessary to achieve the effect of aged wood, then first a special composition is applied to the treated surface (cleaned, sanded and primed).

Patination can be done with a dark stain. Then the first layer of paint is applied to the tree. Then a second layer is applied, lighter and more liquid paint. When the paint is dry, go over the surface of the sandpaper. The desired effect has been achieved.

The table is ready for top coat varnish.

We update the plastic table

Many are afraid to start decorating a plastic table because of its material. In fact, the plastic surface is a more grateful material for restoration. It does not require preliminary and long-term processing.

The maximum is getting rid of scratches and chips. Well, if the surface is even, then it is enough just to sand it a little to roughen it, paint or primer could better adhere, or degrease for further work– gluing films, wallpapers, tiles, mosaics, eggshell or decoupage.

To decoupage a plastic table, you will first need to process the countertop. Sand it, put acrylic primer. Then think about how you will arrange the drawings. Make small outlines of their future location. Usually, napkins or drawings on rice paper are used for decoupage, but for these purposes, you can use any clippings and even pictures printed on a printer.

At the end of the work, the tabletop is varnished.

For effective decoupage, you can use fabric. For decorating purposes, cotton material with a bright pattern is suitable. The decoupage procedure is the same, only PVC glue is applied immediately to the entire fabric.

Mosaic table top decoration

Figure 1. With the help of a mosaic, you can not only make a coffee table unique, but also hide the cracks and stains that have appeared. In addition, the whole process will not take much time and money.

Any alteration of a coffee table begins with its painting. You can cover the entire surface with stain, then the structure of the wood will come through more clearly. Typically, a transparent agent or stain is used, which includes coloring pigments. In this way, furniture is given a resemblance to expensive woods: oak, sandalwood or ebony.

If you want to paint your table, then it is wiser to use acrylic paints. They dry quickly, do not leave streaks and have virtually no unpleasant odor.

In combination with a tabletop decorated with a tiled panel, both dark and light furniture looks great. Therefore, the appearance of a coffee table depends entirely on your taste and the overall interior of the room in which you are going to use it.

But it should be remembered that yellow spots may appear under light paint on old furniture over time. In order to prevent this from happening, the table must first be covered with 1 layer of transparent acrylic varnish.

After the varnish is completely dry, 2 coats of primer are applied to all surfaces. It will add strength to the final coating. Lastly, the coffee table is painted. It is most convenient to use spray paint in cylinders. Such a coating is obtained even, with a slight glossy sheen. In addition, using a spray gun is easier to paint over hard-to-reach places. But sometimes such dyes (unlike traditional acrylic paints) have a pungent odor. Therefore, it is more reasonable to carry out work in a well-ventilated room or on the street.

Now you can start decorating the countertop.

Product decoration

  • tile (best to buy ready-made modules fixed on a grid or paper);
  • tile adhesive;
  • grouting mastic (you can purchase a colored product that will add expressiveness to the panel);
  • masking tape.

In addition, you will need a small notched trowel, an old toothbrush, clean rags, and a large cleaning sponge.

Tile adhesive must be diluted as indicated in the instructions. Do not cook a lot of composition at once. You will need approximately ½ cup of mortar to lay tiles on your countertop.

Using a spatula, apply adhesive to the wrong side of the tile block. Turn the module over and press it against the surface so that excess adhesive shows through the mesh. With a clean rag, remove excess compound, carefully scrubbing the mosaic. But do it carefully, otherwise the module may move. The table must be allowed to dry for approximately 24 hours.

small rubber spatula the composition is applied to the seams between the tiles. Then, with a toothbrush, you need to “drive” it into the gaps of the module. This is required in order to remove air bubbles from the grout. The mastic must be allowed to dry for 15-25 minutes, and then remove its excess by washing the resulting panel with a sponge.

The result of this decoration can be seen in Fig. one.

In this way, you can transform not only a coffee table, but also, for example, a bathroom cabinet.

Decor with wallpaper

Figure 2. Decorating a coffee table with the remnants of wallpaper will help it blend in harmoniously with new interior premises.

Do-it-yourself furniture can be transformed even with the help of a piece of wallpaper that remained after the repair. Such a restoration will take you about 2 hours, and as a result you will get a very elegant piece of furniture made in Art Nouveau style. Such a coffee table is quite difficult to find even in salons. exclusive furniture. To remake the table, you will need the following materials:

  • vinyl wallpaper (their size should be equal to the area of \u200b\u200bthe countertop plus 15 cm of hem allowances on each side);
  • wallpaper glue;
  • transparent furniture varnish or a special composition for decoupage;
  • furniture carnations with decorative heads.

Also, do not forget to prepare a plastic spatula, brushes or rollers for applying glue and varnish, centimeter ruler, Pencil And Hammer.

If you have chosen this way of transforming your coffee table, then it is better not to pre-paint the tabletop, but cover it with 2 layers of furniture varnish. Before you start decorating, the surface must be completely dry.

Dilute the wallpaper paste and let it swell for 10-15 minutes. This time is just enough for you to remove from the countertop required dimensions and cut out the blank from the wallpaper. Be sure to cut the allowances in several places and notch them in the corners, cutting out triangles. Try on the workpiece, carefully bending the allowances.

Apply glue to the wrong side of the wallpaper, roll it up, allowing it to soak in the product. Glue can be smeared on the countertop itself.

Lay the wallpaper on the furniture, carefully smoothing out all the folds and creases. Use a plastic spatula to remove air bubbles. Bend the allowances and glue them to the inner surface of the table. Let the glue dry completely and coat the coffee table with 2 coats of varnish (letting the previous coat dry completely).

Then, using a ruler and pencil, mark the future location of the carnations. They can be placed in 1 line or make an interesting pattern from the heads. It is only necessary to ensure that the same distance is maintained between the caps. Drive nails along the markup.

The result of the modification is shown in Fig. 2.

Instead of wallpaper, you can use a piece of fabric, such as curtain satin. Then the countertop will also acquire an original texture.
