It is impossible to create modular stairs without preliminary calculations. To carry them out, you will need:

  • Make a drawing of the room in which you are going to install the stairs. Such a scheme is best drawn to scale (on paper in a box or graph paper).
  • Measure the height of the room, in centimeters. Next to the plan of the room on the sheet, schematically depict the section of the room in height (mark with lines the level of the floor of the lower and upper floors with the obligatory observance of scale).

  • Then make a schematic drawing. The distance between the steps (vertically) should be 14-16 centimeters. If the last (upper) step turns out to be less than necessary in height, “scatter” this “surplus” evenly over all other steps. For example, the floor height is 280 centimeters. With a step height of 15 centimeters, we get 18.6 steps in the diagram. In this case, it is better to make 18 steps, the distance between which in height will be 15.5 cm.
  • Draw a horizontal projection of the steps on the floor plan. The recommended width of the stairs is 1 meter. The width of the step is 28-30 centimeters.
  • When constructing a straight or L-shaped structure, the number of steps in which exceeds 15, it is better to make an intermediate platform, the length of which is 1 meter.

A spiral staircase must have an internal radius at which the free part of the step (from the side of the turning center) will maintain an open width of at least 20 centimeters.

Make a large drawing of the modules on which the steps will be attached. All modules must be the same. If you plan to order modules, then a drawing is not necessary.

Let's start creating

First, we choose the material for the steps: any wood you have will do (the thickness of the board must be at least 4 centimeters). The boards on the steps usually have to be glued together and at the same time additionally fastened with long screws (to ensure the necessary strength). Alternatively, you can buy ready-made wooden steps required size or purchase massive board suitable thickness (or glue two less thick ones).

Modules of circular cross section, on which the steps will be attached, are not so easy to make on your own. Therefore, it is better to order them in a special company, providing your drawing and calculation of the stairs.

Square modules can be made from a profile pipe with a wall thickness of at least 4-5 mm. The elements will have to be connected to each other with bolts (4 pieces for each connection), plus additional welds to enhance reliability. It is this option that we will now analyze in detail with you.

The assembly of a modular staircase always starts from the bottom, therefore, first of all, it is necessary to perform concrete pads(foundations) for bearing metal supports which can be immediately concreted into them.

What you need to know about kosour?

Regardless of the chosen type of modular staircase, you will have to get acquainted with the main element of the structure in question - the chain stringer.

Kosour is the main central component of the considered variety of stairs. It is assembled from a number of typesetting elements, the installation of which can be carried out directly or at some angle, which gives the owner the opportunity to create stairs of a wide variety of shapes.

The kosour is fastened to the supporting modular elements from above and below, due to which the required rigidity and strength of the structure are achieved.

For additional rigidity, a support pipe is included in the design every 100-150 running centimeters.

If there is a solid concrete staircase near the location, or brick wall, from using additional elements modular design can be abandoned by fixing the stairs directly to the wall.

Stair assembly options

There are several methods for assembling ladder modules. Each of existing options characterized by its strengths and weaknesses, which you need to know about before starting work on the self-assembly of a modular staircase.

"Module to Module"

The kosour can be assembled according to the “module to module” method with additional fastening using plates and fixing screws. This is the first generation of such ladders with many disadvantages, including:

  • strictly limited step steps. This step cannot be adjusted;
  • some curvature assembled structure. It is impossible to get rid of this defect even by tightening the screws;
  • relatively low durability. Over time, the mounting plates begin to unbend on their own, which leads to sagging of the entire structure and causes additional inconvenience.

The only advantages of this option are the high speed and the utmost ease of assembly.

Threaded studs

This method involves the use of threaded studs in the assembly process. Such stairs do not have the disadvantages of the previous design, however, the assembly with threaded studs is quite difficult. The height of the steps still cannot be adjusted. Every 1-2 years it will be necessary to tighten loose threaded connections, and this also causes a lot of trouble.

Clamp principle

These are new generation ladders. Among the main advantages of this option, it should be noted the possibility of changing the length of the step and the distance between the elements. You can unfold modules and flanges.

The distribution of the load on the fasteners is organized according to an improved technology - the connections do not loosen over time.

Each of the stairs discussed above can be assembled using bolts - these are elementary fasteners installed between individual steps and contribute to increased rigidity and reliability of the structure. Most often, bolts are used in the stairs of the latest generation.

Important Notes

In order for your modular staircase to serve as long as possible without complaints, remember the following tips:

  • vertical supports must be installed on pre-poured concrete pads. They will serve as the foundation;
  • the ladder is allowed to be matched only with a main wall with a thickness of 20-25 cm;
  • when installing a modular ladder on a wooden floor, the logs must first be reinforced with transverse bars.

Preparatory stage

On the preparatory stage you have to perform a number of calculations and prepare the necessary drawings.

First step. Create a drawing of the room where you plan to place the modular staircase. It is most convenient to make such drawings on a scale on graph paper or in a special program.

Second step. Measure the height of the room. Draw a section of the room in height next to the previously drawn up plan of the room on a piece of paper. Mark in the drawing the lines of the floor and ceiling of the room.

Third step. Schematically draw a modular ladder. The steps will be fixed at a distance of about 15-16 cm. The drawing will help you determine the required number of steps. If the upper step will have an unacceptably small height, the "surplus" must be evenly distributed over all the steps of the stairs.

For example, the floor has a height of 280 cm. You make 15 cm steps. Simple calculations show that there will be not an integer number of steps, but, specifically in this case, 18.6 pieces. In this example, you need to make 18 steps, increasing the distance between the individual steps to 15.5 cm.

Fourth step. Apply a horizontal projection stairs to the room plan. The optimal width of the modular staircase is 100 cm. It is better to make steps about 30 cm wide.

Fifth step. Prepare a drawing of the modules for fastening the steps of the stairs. Each module must have the same dimensions and shape. If you plan to use ready-made modules, this drawing is not needed.

main stage

First step. Prepare material for the manufacture of steps of a modular staircase. It is advisable to use solid wood. Optimal Thickness boards - from 4-5 cm. Use screws and glue to connect the boards. If you wish, you can purchase steps in ready-made. At this point, be guided by your personal preferences and the characteristics of your particular situation.

Second step. Prepare modules for fastening steps. It is almost impossible to make round modules at home without the appropriate skills. Therefore, it is better to immediately order their manufacture by a specialized company according to your calculations and drawings.

Bearing nodes - modules

You can make square modules yourself. Use profile pipes for this. Pipes with walls from 0.5 cm thick are suitable. Use bolts and welding to connect the elements.

Third step. Prepare concrete pads for the installation of load-bearing supports. These supports should be immediately concreted into the platforms.

Fourth step. Cut a suitable pipe into the required number of pieces according to the previously prepared drawings.

Fifth step. Make holes in the prepared elements for bolting the modules.

Sixth step. Assemble the entire structure by attaching the ladder modules to the supports in parallel.

Seventh step. Reinforce the system by creating some neat welds. At the same stage, weld a metal corner to the stair modules if you want to create such a edging for the steps.

Eighth step. Paint the metal structural elements, having previously cleaned them of rust.

Ninth step. Mount steps.

Tenth step. Install a fence. It can be forged or wooden. Choose to your taste.

In the end, you will only have to once again verify the quality and reliability of all connections and test the assembled structure. On this, a modular staircase with your own hands is ready. As you can see, there is nothing complicated in its assembly. Follow the instructions and everything will definitely work out.
