Comfort in the suburban area is an important matter. On earth we not only work, but also rest. And they can decorate any area. But above all, it is a matter of cleanliness and safety (who has never fallen, slipping on muddy ground, does not know what I'm talking about)). So today I want to tell you about 9 popular garden path materials as well as their advantages and disadvantages. If I miss something, write in the comments.

Comfort in the countryside-important matter

Preparatory work

It is not at all necessary to be a landscape designer or builder in order to build beautiful, durable and safe paths on your site. A little information, effort and imagination - and the "dream track" is ready. The only thing I advise you before starting work mark tracks, planning their location so that it is convenient to get to any point of the site.

Tracks can be straight or curvy. Designers know what a winding path is capable of. But most gardeners prefer not to philosophize slyly and make a straight line.

Special attention give soil preparation. After marking the paths (and this is easiest to do with a cord and pegs), remove the sod with a shovel.

In fact, you need to dig a small trench, the height of which depends on the height of the sand cushion. Yes, in most cases sand will be required, which must not only be poured, but straighten and flatten. For greater reliability, the bottom of the trench must be covered with gravel or.

Garden path materials

When choosing a material, consider relief and design site. Well, if in your garden there is no place for designer "things", come first from the operational properties of the material which I will discuss below.

1. Natural stone

A colorful and noble material that will fit well into any landscape style. But in our gardens, it is not so common. Which one can be used for a garden path? The most different. From expensive breeds - basalt, granite, porphyry and marble. More affordable - sandstone and limestone. All of them differ in color (gray, dark red, greenish-gray, black), surface, processing.

Can be put to work raw stone collected in a mountainous area. Can you take sawn stone, which itself is already practically a tile. Stone slabs are much easier to lay, but they are more expensive.

From other breeds are used diabase, gabbro, all kinds of pebbles, tuff, shale and dolomite.

Advantages natural stone:

  • durability: it will literally serve for centuries;
  • environmental friendliness;
  • the beauty.

Disadvantages of natural stone:

  • heavy weight (it is physically difficult to make such a track);
  • high cost, even if you take a simple limestone.
  • icing. Alas, most rocks in the cold season, an ice crust forms, and therefore it is unsafe to walk along such a path. There is salvation, but not everyone will decide on it. This is the installation of a heating system directly under the track)). Seriously, they do it too.

What you need to know:

  • porous stones e.g. limestone and tuff, absorb moisture, and therefore it is advisable to treat them with a water-repellent solution every 3 years.
  • When laying natural stone, remember that at least one side must be flat. The trench needs to be deep enough so that the stone fits well and the path is smooth. At the same time, it is desirable to fill half the height of the trench with crushed stone. And already on the compacted rubble pour sand and lay stones. And do not forget to buy a rubber mallet for laying the stone. However, if the stone is hard, you can get by with a hammer.

2. Wood in many different forms

The material is also colorful, but, unfortunately, not as durable as stone. If you don't want to change your garden path every 3-4 seasons, think right away about treating the track with antiseptic and water-repellent compounds. I think the one that is used for processing is quite suitable.

Select suitable remedy our market will help you to process the tracks. and compare the offers of different online stores.

Wooden garden paths are very different:
  • from boards(as bridges - the simplest and most familiar option);
  • from special wooden tiles;
  • from wooden saw cuts. Very handy, interesting idea. Looks amazing, especially if you use saw cuts different sizes and arrange them nicely.

What breeds are best for a garden path? Of course, oak. True, it won't be cheap. Oaks are generally valued on the farm. I know old houses which still stand on oak pillars. also does not rot for a long time. Well, if there are none, take any wood you can find). You can even cut garden trees.

Advantages of wood:

  • environmental friendliness;
  • the beauty;
  • decision variability. You can think of anything, there would be a fantasy;
  • fast drying. Wood is a very warm material, so it quickly thaws in spring and becomes a favorite place for cat sunbathing =))

Disadvantages of a wooden garden path:

  • short service life (if it is not oak, larch and similar species).

What you need to know:

  • Before laying the same saw cuts, they can be treat with drying oil brought to a boil. After drying, this treatment should be repeated again.
  • On the sand cushion some advise to put polyethylene film y. The wood will not come into contact with the ground and, as a result, will rot less. On the other hand, there is a high probability that moisture will accumulate there. To avoid this, the ground under the future path needs to be formed in the form of a sloping arch. Then the water will definitely not accumulate.
  • The voids between the saws can be covered with wood chips, sand, crushed stone or gravel. To your taste. If you fill it with sand, over time, grass will break through there and it will be very beautiful.
  • When nailing walkways, leave between the boards small gap. Firstly, the wood will be "distributed" from moisture, and secondly, water will go into the cracks.

3. Special materials for road surfaces

These include processed stone, asphalt, in the end - that is, all those materials that are traditionally used in the construction of roads and sidewalks.

The advantages of such materials:

  • ease of installation;
  • the beauty;
  • strength: they are not afraid of moisture and temperature changes, withstand loads.

Disadvantages:

  • high cost (for example, paving stones cost an average of 400 rubles per 1 m²). If the plot is large, such a garden path can cost a pretty penny.
  • it is inconvenient to walk on stilettos on the paving stones (so, just in case)).

What you need to know:

  • garden paths from such materials have a finished look only with curbs. Although, if you lay them flush with the ground, you can do without borders.
  • Important make sure the tiles fit together and constantly check the level, otherwise there is a chance to get a skewed track.
  • If you notice any marriage (for example, a crack), do not use such a tile, because in the future it will quickly become unusable.

4. Brick as an alternative to paving stones

quite often used for arranging garden paths. You can combine bricks of different colors, create ornaments, lay them both flat and on edge.

Advantages of a brick garden path:

  • the beauty;
  • strength;
  • long service life.

Disadvantages:

What is important to know:

  • Brick garden path is better to lay for solution. It is also possible on the sand, but there is a possibility that one day the bricks will simply disperse.
  • Bricks for curbs in any case should be placed on the mortar.
  • On the sides of the path, at the junction with the lawn, you can drive in a board. It will additionally keep the track from “scattering”. This technique is applicable to the construction of any garden path.
  • Not every brick is suitable, but only clinker. It is more expensive, but stronger than construction. Construction will quickly crumble.

5. Concrete

Actually, why not?

Advantages of a concrete garden path:

  • strength and durability;
  • resistance to humidity and temperature changes;
  • the possibility of subsequent laying tiles or stone on a concrete base.

What you need to know:

  • The more cement in the solution, the stronger track. Optimal ratio: 1:2:3 (cement, sand and gravel, respectively).
  • formwork from boards around the edges obligatory. Otherwise, the solution will spread.
  • There is interesting solution for decorating a concrete walkway: while the concrete has not hardened, chop multi-colored glass and press large glass into the surface. It can turn out to be a very pretty ornament. In the same way, you can use pebbles, small pebbles.

6. Gravel

Excellent material for creating winding paths. You don't need to calibrate or align anything. It is enough to pour and tamp. This so-called bulk track. also, by the way, it is different. You can use expanded clay gravel or any other, stone chips, crushed stone, etc.

Gravel Benefits:

  • cheapness ("Kamaz" gravel costs about 1.5 thousand rubles). Correction: the price depends on the region, type of gravel, fraction, tonnage, in the end ... and depending on who you will buy from)). On average, they ask for 500 to 700 rubles per ton. There are higher prices. But there are also below. Ideally: buy KAMAZ together with neighbors. So that extra gravel does not lie near the house and it is not expensive.
  • environmental friendliness;
  • ease and speed of installation;
  • decorative.

Gravel Disadvantages:

  • Does not withstand heavy loads. But it's good enough for walking.
  • Gradually overgrows, "grows" into the ground and becomes clogged. Such a path cannot be swept, for example.
  • Walking on it is still not very comfortable. Especially at first, when the gravel has not yet been completely compacted.

What you need to know:

  • Before gravel, till the soil so that the path does not overgrow with weeds (agrofiber or plastic film is used for the same purpose).
  • If not processed, the track will periodically need weeding.
  • We'll have to add new gravel.
  • Without curbs, such a path will become shapeless. In addition, very soon gravel will roll all over the site (especially if there are children)

7. Plastic

And where only this material is not used! It turns out that in the store you can buy a special plastic tiles for a garden path. Any color, shape, etc.

Advantages of plastic:

  • does not rot;
  • easy to install (as a rule, special floorings are easily fastened together);
  • most available different colors, shapes, sizes, etc. And a plastic track can be quite beautiful;
  • easy.

Disadvantages of plastic:

  • does not withstand heavy loads;
  • fades in the sun;
  • wears out pretty quickly, although plastic is also different;
  • cannot boast of special aesthetics.

What you need to know:

No special installation instructions plastic tracks no. And if there is, read it on the package when buying.

It is interesting that there is even a special plastic paving slabs. Do you know how it is installed? Sticks into the ground! Perfect option for arranging temporary paths, for example, at the time of the spring crossroads. And not temporary either.

And here is a funny example of a garden path

Making paths in the country can greatly affect the design of the site. Therefore, it is so important to pay attention to creating beautiful tracks.

Moreover, you can make an interesting path from various materials, for example, a brick path will look elegant, and mysteries country design a path made of round logs of natural wood will give, a path made of river pebbles looks stylish, emphasizes original design and make it brighter track of plastic corks.

In addition, there are also ready-made removable panels that can be laid out every year to your liking.

country path project

Before you start laying the path, you need to create a terrain plan in which to designate all the buildings, garden plantings, flower beds and schematically designate the path. Ancillary objects, such as an irrigation system, must also be present on the drawing.

When creating a plan, it is necessary to take into account all the nuances, so you should be as comfortable as possible, getting to any place in the garden. In addition, you must take into account the fact that you need to walk around your territory in any weather conditions, and at any time of the year.

Now the drafted project must be applied directly to the site.

It will be easier to determine the width of the path and its direction if you apply markings directly on the site, which is especially true for the path from paving slabs or brick.

It is best to make markings with pegs, which you must first drive in, and then pull the rope over them. Also, for convenience, the side border of the track can be marked by sprinkling it with lime.

At the same time, it is important to take into account that the removal of the top layer of soil for laying the path should be wider than the path, because for reliability and durability it will need curbs made of such durable materials as concrete or stone.

Preparatory work

In order for the garden path to serve you faithfully for many years, thorough preparation will be required.

So, you need to take into account that the path should be with a slight slope, and in the area of \u200b\u200bthe slope you need to make a drainage trench. This is necessary in order to rainwater flowed from the path, and excess moisture would not damage the coating.

The thickness of the removed soil should be 15 ÷ 200 mm. After that, in order for the edges to remain even, it is necessary to install boards along the entire perimeter of the dug hole from the side of the sides.

Then a “pillow” is made for this, gravel is poured into the pit along with cement and everything is compacted and moistened. "Pillow" should have a thickness of 50-100 mm.

General impression of suburban area will be incomplete if it is not decorated with beautiful and comfortable garden paths. Not only depends on how well they are located and well made. appearance territory, but also the organization of economic activity. Paths in the country can be made of various materials and in different ways.

The choice of material for the track in the country

Many summer residents are wondering: what is the best way to make paths in the country? The answer to this question depends on its size and material capabilities of a person.

Some paths made from improvised materials have a more attractive appearance than traditional ones made of concrete or concrete slabs. Paving in the country should be economical, practical and durable. The material for country paths can be very different. Most often, common improvised and Construction Materials. IN last years people are increasingly producing . All materials used for this purpose can be different in color, texture and decorative effect. Most often, tracks with a compacted surface layer or with a hard surface are made on their own.

Photo paths in the country is simply amazing with its diversity. The simplest - rammed paths are made of sand, pebbles, gravel, brick breakage. Some summer residents use wooden saw cuts to complete this element of their summer cottage, which give it a special decorative effect.

For this purpose, only hardwoods treated with special impregnations are used.

Video: making a country path from stumps

The hard surface can be made of brick, natural stone, concrete slabs, paving slabs or monolithic concrete. Various patterns can be made from such material, which will give the site an additional decorative effect. Such a track is much stronger and more durable than rammed ones. It is distinguished by its practicality, but it costs much more expensive than that that is made from scrap materials.

An important role in creating a path in the country with their own hands is played by the curb. It not only fixes clear boundaries, but also protects its edges from destruction. The border also plays a decorative role. Although a curbstone is a desirable element, it is not considered mandatory. Most often, without a curb, paths are made of concrete slabs with large gaps between them and natural stone with a curvilinear configuration of the boundaries.
When covering sand, pebbles, slag, gravel, a curb is necessary. The most practical and durable concrete curb laid on concrete base. For curvilinear paths, it is better to choose borders made of brick, flat stone or tiles laid on edge.

Thanks to the choice the right material you can create a harmonious track system, made in the same style and perfectly combined with general view site.

  • So for the design of the site in rustic style wood is the best.
  • Natural stone is ideal for making curved paths.
  • Brick is wonderfully combined with buildings made of it. To perform tracks, select special types paving bricks that are not afraid of moisture and cold.
  • Paving stones of different shades allow you to create unique patterns.
  • Paths made of gravel and pebbles are most suitable for garden areas and near artificial reservoirs.

In recent years, people have the opportunity not only to create paths from monolithic concrete, but also to give it original shape. To do this, it will be enough to buy plastic templates of various configurations in a specialized store, which will allow you to cast concrete elements on your own.

Some of the materials used to make the tracks are perfectly combined with each other. They combine so well:

  • concrete and brick;
  • river pebbles and wood;
  • multi-colored gravel and natural stone.

Country path planning

Before you make paths in the country, you need to correctly draw up a diagram or plan of the site, on which to depict the planned directions, taking into account all the buildings and plantings located on the site.

When developing them, one should take into account the amount of precipitation that falls in this area. Sometimes you have to create drainage system so that there is no stagnation of water in the area. It should also be remembered that excess water during freezing quickly spoils not only wood, but also materials such as concrete and brick.

Near the tracks should not grow large trees, as they can destroy them with their powerful roots. When drawing up a more detailed plan-scheme, a picture of the country landscape will be more clearly presented and it will be easier to make a choice in favor of one or another building material.

For almost all types of country paths, one technology for their laying is observed. All work is divided into several important stages:

  1. Site marking. At this stage, with the help of a cord and pegs, the contours of the track are marked. The edges are carefully drawn along the outlined lines.
  2. With the help of a shovel, the sod is removed along the length and width of the intended path. The soil is taken out to the thickness of the sand cushion, which serves as the basis for paving. The thickness of the base layer must be at least 10 cm.
  3. Sand (sometimes crushed stone) is poured into the dug trench and it is carefully compacted and leveled.
  4. Paving is laid on the sand, carefully monitoring the observance of the level of the track.

Do-it-yourself budget tracks in the country

The most popular in the country are the following options tracks:

  • Path of gravel or small pebbles. They are made very quickly, but they do not differ in durability. The soil in the trench is treated with herbicides and covered with polyethylene or agrofiber so that weeds do not germinate. A layer of pebbles or gravel is poured on it and the surface of the track is leveled. In order for this material not to crumble over the site, it is necessary to create a border, for example, from tiles or bricks.
  • Walkway made of wood saw cuts. To create it, trunks and thick branches of sawn hardwood trees are suitable. They are cut into circles. The thickness of the material should be more than 10 cm. Well-dried saw cuts are treated with hot drying oil, which is applied with a brush over the entire surface. After the impregnation has dried, the treatment is repeated. Lay on a pre-prepared sand cushion polyethylene film. Saw cuts are laid on it with any fantasy pattern and leveled. All voids between them are covered with gravel, sand or soil.
  • country path made of stone can be made not only from purchased material, but also from what can be found in almost any area. When choosing elements, preference should be given to the stone that has at least one flat side. Under such paving, the trench should have a depth of at least 20 cm. Crushed stone (10 cm) is poured onto its bottom. It is compacted, and sand (10 cm) is poured on top and compacted again. Stones are laid on the prepared sand and gravel pillow. To fill the voids between them, sand is poured from above and all the voids are filled with it. At the final stage, the path is thoroughly watered. It may be necessary to refill the voids between the stones with sand.
  • Paving stone path. This option is one of the best. The depth of the trench for such material should be 20-25 cm. The sand-gravel cushion is created in the same way as under the stone path. Paving stones with a thickness of more than 60 mm will protrude above the soil. This path is best done with curbs. Paving stones are laid on a sandy base tightly to each other. In this case, the pattern can be the most diverse. When laying, pavers with signs of marriage should not be used, as they will quickly become unusable.
  • Brick path. It is created according to the same principle as the pavement path. The same brick placed on edge is used as a curb. Paving made of bricks of various shades looks especially attractive.

Concrete path (video):

concrete walkway

Paths in the country from monolithic concrete are still popular. Their manufacture requires a large amount of cement, sand and gravel. But they are durable and practical. When performing them, one rule should be remembered: the more cement in the solution, the stronger the concrete will be. For tracks, the following proportions of materials are most often used:

  • cement - 1 part;
  • crushed stone - 3 parts;
  • sand - 2 parts.

In order for such a path to rise above the ground, it is necessary to make a formwork from the boards under it. At the bottom of the trench lay out stones, broken bricks or other hard construction garbage. The solution is poured into the formwork and its surface is leveled. Concrete can be decorated with tiles, mosaics or beautiful stones pressed into the uncured mortar.

Tiled walkways

Paths made of concrete slabs of various sizes are very popular. They are easy to fit and are durable. A sandy base is also arranged under them. A country path made of 50x50 or 40x40 cm tiles looks quite impressive, does not take up much space and is very practical. When using smaller tiles, you can create various options paving patterns. They can be laid close to one another or at some intervals, which are covered with small stone or soil. They can be planted with grass.
