Datura ordinary: planting and leaving

Datura - (another name for the flower) is easily grown from seed. Seeds can be found in any garden store. Germination rate is almost 100%, but the first shoots appear no earlier than a month later.

Seed preparation: Previously for several days, the seeds are soaked in a growth stimulator, or in a regular cold water, this will soften the hard, dense skin that covers the seeds.

You can use zip bags. Pour some water, place the seeds and wait for piercing, then you can safely plant in the ground.

Seeds are sown in the ground in mid-May. But for fast flowering, seedlings are used.

Growing seedlings: The seeds are sown in bowls, after 3 weeks, the first shoots should appear, after a while they are dived into separate containers.

Seeds are sown on the surface, lightly sprinkled on top with soil up to 1 cm.It is necessary to water abundantly through a sprayer.

After sowing, the containers are covered with a glass flask and the temperature is kept at 20 degrees, periodically removing the flask for ventilation.

With the emergence of seedlings, the sprouts are provided with a fairly strong diffused light and abundant watering.

To do without diving, only one seed is planted in one pot.

Stabbing: With the appearance of the first 2-3 leaves, young shoots must be stabbed. At first, they are taken out for 1 hour in the open air, but after a few days, the time is gradually increased.

In a month, if the night temperature does not drop below +10 degrees, the seedlings can be left outside overnight.

Upon reaching 15-20 cm in height and the presence of 15-20 degrees of air temperature, the seedlings are transferred to open ground, planted with a step of 30 cm, but the root collar cannot be buried in the ground.

Soil: Choose a nutritious, loose soil, it should conduct air and water well and be rich in organic matter.

Terrain: On open ground choose a sunny area without drafts and wind, otherwise the dope branches will break, bend over, and the buds fall off.

Watering: Pay particular attention to watering. It should be plentiful, but don't overdo it. Use soft, settled water.

If the watering regime is violated, the dope will drop leaves and buds.

Top dressing: During the period of active growth (flowering), it is necessary to apply organic fertilizers: manure, compost 2 times a month.

People have long known what a Datura flower looks like, and have been growing it for several millennia. When used correctly and dosed, the plant can be used in folk medicine. Datura herb has an antispasmodic, analgesic and sedative effect. On the basis of dope, drugs are prepared that fight various ailments: asthma, neuralgia, rheumatism, stomach cancer, mastopathy, coughing fits, etc.

The datature belongs to the Solanaceae family and includes 13 species that have different description by color, intensity of aroma, degree of toxicity, etc. This is an annual herbaceous plant(some gardeners cultivate it as a perennial), with long petiolate ovoid leaves of a dark green color, about 10 cm wide. Flowers are large, single. The fruit of the datura is a large four-nested capsule, with numerous thorns, which dries up when ripe.

The plant almost completely contains alkaloids, in the stems - about 0.16%, in the roots - 0.26%, in the seeds - up to 0.22%. In the tropics and subtropics, where wild datura lives, this flower can reach up to 5 meters in length. It is impossible to achieve such growth at home, since it requires a lot free space... With favorable home conditions, you can grow datura up to two meters.

In addition, the plant has an incredibly beautiful color that can range from white to lilac, purple, violet and even yellow.

How to plant datura in open ground: choosing a place for a plant

Unpretentious plant datura does not require special skills when growing. To receive you need to beautiful plant, it is enough to simply provide the dope with nutrition and moisture.

Microclimate for datura

This is a fairly light-loving plant, therefore, open, sunny places that are not subject to strong gusts of wind are selected for planting. The plant has a rare germination of seeds (up to 95%), which germinate faster when the temperature rises. Seeds can germinate in a week or two if the temperature rises to +25 ... + 28 ° C. Sow the plant in spring:in open ground in May, for seedlings - in late February - early March.

Important! Do not forget that the date - poisonous plant, therefore, she does not belong near playgrounds and in places where children are often.

Datura soil

Datura loves loose, clayey, fertile, drained soil, rich in fertilizers. It is better to harvest the soil mixture in the fall. A mixture of sifted garden soil is suitable as a substrate, river sand and humus in a ratio of 2: 1: 2. Periodically, fertilizing with complex mineral fertilizers will be required.

Features of planting datura (dope-herbs)

Datura grass has some planting features that must be taken into account in order for the plant to delight the eye with its color for a long time. The first datura is best grown through seedlings. Subsequently, it will multiply by self-seeding and will take its place in the garden for a long time.

Preparation of planting material

Datura seeds sprout rather slowly, about 30 days. Therefore, to speed up the process, you need to soak planting material for 2 weeks in cold water mixed with any growth stimulant. The floating seeds are thrown away, and those that remain at the bottom can be sown.

How to sow seeds for seedlings

Datura can be cultivated in several ways, the most common of which is growing from seed. Seedlings are planted in early spring in small plastic containers - cups, food containers. A thin layer of peat, a layer of soil, then seeds are poured onto the bottom of the container. From above it is better to cover the seeds with a thin layer of compost, sprinkle with ash and cover with glass. The first shoots germinate unevenly after 10-12 days, the rest will germinate within a month. For seedlings, you need to maintain moderate soil moisture at all times and provide adequate lighting.

Features of planting dope in open ground

Datura is a heat-loving plant that dies when the temperature drops below +8 ... + 10 degrees, so it is planted in late spring. Mid or late May is well suited, as soon as the ground warms up to +16 ° C. For disembarkation, you need to prepare landing pits about 60-70 cm deep and about 50 cm in diameter. Datura loves space very much, so it should be planted at a distance of about 1 m from each other, not deeply deepening (no more than 10 cm). After planting, the seedlings must be watered.

Datura: picking seedlings

Datura is a rather sensitive flower, therefore, before planting it in separate pots, you do not need to dive. When planting on seedlings, the plant dives as soon as a pair of leaves appears. Seedlings are planted in separate containers, slightly deepening (no more than 1 cm). If the seedlings are damaged by the "black leg", you can make a pick at an earlier stage, but the survival rate of the plant decreases.

Rules for caring for dope in a flower garden

Due to its unpretentiousness, the datura does not need special care... For her good growth only loose, nutritious soil, pruning and abundant watering is enough, on which the flowering of the plant depends.

How to water a datura

Datura needs to be watered every other day, and if the weather is dry and hot, it needs to be watered every day. When growing a plant indoors in winter, watering should be reduced to 1 time per week. In case of insufficient humidity, datura loses buds, flowers and leaves. It is better to water with hard water. Loves the plant and frequent spraying, especially in the evenings in the hot, summer season.

Basic requirements for feeding

The plant requires active feeding, especially during development. At this time, it is necessary to apply weekly full mineral and organic fertilizers in turn. In winter, when the dormant phase of the plant begins, feeding is stopped. If datura grows on acidic soils, it should be watered once a season with milk of lime: 1 g of lime per 1 liter of water.

How to properly prune a plant

One of the prerequisites for the successful growth of Datura as a perennial is pruning. Datura flowers form only on young shoots, therefore, so that the plant does not stop blooming, you need to constantly cut off the wilted flowers, leaving the fruits for the seeds. The seeds can crumble, so special bags are put on the boxes. In September, after flowering, a crown should be formed by carefully cutting off the branches of the plant.

Datura wintering

The datura does not survive overwintering in the open ground, so the plant, after pruning, is dug up, transplanted into volumetric pots and brought into the room. For successful wintering in a datura room, a constant temperature of +15 ... + 17 ° C is required. During the winter period, the plant sheds all its leaves and forms new shoots with leaves. In the spring, you need to prune new branches, which will give good cuttings that will take root quickly. Later rooted datura cuttings are an excellent material for planting, having even greater resistance than overwintered mother plant... Therefore, in middle latitudes, datura is best cultivated as an annual.

Contradictory and mythical dope plant... Since ancient times, it has been used in medicine and ritual ceremonies. The plant has many names: datura, dope herb, stupidity potion, prickly apples, stupor grass, etc.

This is due to the fact that all parts of the datura plant contain alkaloids, which have a pronounced hallucinogenic effect.

Datura belongs to the nightshade family. Its height can reach 1.5 m. Datura flowers- very large, corrugated bell-shaped. Flowering - long: from mid June to September. ripen in a 4-nested box covered with long thorns.

Datura cultivation ordinary and dope Indian does not represent much work - the plant is very unpretentious. Datura is best grown in well-lit areas, but it can tolerate partial shade.

The soil requires nutritious, loose. Datura grows well on compost and manure heaps. The plant is hygrophilous, needs regular abundant watering. With weekly feeding with complex fertilizers, powerful, abundantly flowering bushes grow. Pests do not encroach on datura because of their toxicity.

Datura - reproduction.

Reproduction of dope ordinary and dope Indian occurs as in other letnikov-seeds. For guaranteed receipt flowering plant it is desirable to grow seedlings.

Datura seeds are notable for poor germination - it is better to germinate them before sowing.

The seeds are placed on a saucer with a damp napkin, covered with a transparent bag and placed in a bright place.

Planting germinated dope seeds are done at a shallow depth (about 1 cm). Later, it is advisable to plant dope plants in separate containers.

In the open field, Datura can reproduce by self-seeding. At the same time, some of the seeds can sprout in the fall, and the seedlings can successfully overwinter under conditions mild winter... The rest of the seeds emerge in spring.

Datura breeding possibly by rooting stem cuttings. They resort to it if it is necessary to increase the amount of planting material.

Datura - varieties and types in ornamental gardening.

There are usually three main kind of dope. Datura ordinary (Datura stramonium), dope Indian (Datura innoxia) and dope indian (Datura metel). The complete classification of species is quite difficult, but common in horticulture. dope varieties Indian and common dope.

Of the varieties of the Indian dope, the most popular is the ballerina series. On the picture dope variety- Golden Queen with yellow double flowers. Just below- ballerina purple variety.

Low-growing varieties of Indian dope have been bred, for example, Evening fragrance. He has large white flowers (up to 10 cm), and the height does not exceed 40 cm. These varieties can be grown in pots as well.

In general, Datura species and dope indian- cultures are self-sufficient and do not need companions. Looks best in single plantings against the backdrop of a lawn. Interesting assorted dope planted in a group. For example, plants with simple white flowers interspersed with plants with double lilac flowers.

Datura is an annual plant that can reach a height of 1 m or more. This culture has been known for a very long time. It is difficult to pinpoint her homeland. There are two versions. According to the first, dope appeared in Mexico and central America, and later was introduced to Europe. Supporters of the second version argue that the plant is native to the Caspian steppes, from where it came to European countries during the Middle Ages. Datura can be found in many American and Asian countries today. It received the greatest distribution in Russia and Ukraine, as well as in the Caucasus. Datura can often be seen along roads and rivers, as well as in gardens and vegetable gardens.

Loose dope bushes grow mainly in breadth, while individual shoots reach about 1.5 m long... The leaves have a bluish-green tint. They are darker at the top and lighter at the bottom. If you grind even a small leaf, you can smell an unusual smell. Young plants resemble eggplant seedlings.

When the shoot reaches a height of 30 cm, it bifurcates. As a result, the first bud appears here over time. It reaches a length of 20 cm and opens up in the evening. A single funnel has a diameter of about 20 cm. The shade of the flower is white, cream, yellowish, red and lavender. From the opened bud, there is a rich aroma that can resemble the scent of a lily. Blooming is observed only one night... The flower will wither in the first half of the next day. If you cut it off, it will stand in the water for 2-3 days. After the first flower withers, the next one will appear in 1-2 weeks.

Datura fruits are spherical in shape. They are surrounded by thorny thorns. The seeds of the plant are smooth and small.

Plant species

Landing features

Datura is known to be ideal for growing a dung or compost heap. Under favorable conditions, the plant is capable of self-seeding. In some cases, seed germination is observed even in autumn, and the first seedlings are able to withstand cold weather. The seeds remaining in the soil germinate in early spring. It is worth noting that experts recommend sowing dope in the period from April to May.

The plant is considered unpretentious. He needs enough nutrients and moisture, as well as loose soil, to which ash should be added.

Particular attention should be paid to the preparation of the planting holes. They should be about 70 cm deep and 50 cm in diameter. drainage must be used... If the dope is buried too deeply during planting, it may not survive.

Some gardeners prefer to plant the plants in containers. In this case, a fairly large capacity is required. Flower pots if desired, in the summer, you can dig into the ground in the summer. An illuminated area without drafts is ideal for dope.

The soil mixture for the seeds must be prepared in advance. This can be done even in the fall. So, you will need garden land, coarse river sand and humus in a ratio of 2: 1: 2.

Some gardeners to speed up germination check seeds for germination... So, they are placed in a container of water. The floating seeds are thrown away, and the rest are used for planting. Planting seeds for seedlings must be done in March. It should be remembered that seeds germinate from a depth of up to 10 cm. If planting in open ground is planned, then the beginning of May is best suited.

Datura seedlings appear on average after 2-4 weeks. Even before they appear, it is necessary to ensure that the soil is constantly wet. To do this, you can additionally cover the area with foil. As soon as the first shoots appear, the seedlings must be transferred to a lighted cool place... Formation of a pair of true leaves indicates the need for a pick... All seedlings are planted in separate containers. In this case, they need to be slightly deepened. When planting in open ground, which is carried out at the end of May, you need to ensure that there is a gap of 1 m between individual plants. This is very important, because the plant loves space.

Some experts prefer to propagate Datura by cuttings. For this, still unlignified shoots with a couple of internodes are cut from the plant. They take root in soil or water. Already rooted plants are planted in open ground in May. If you plan to grow dope at home, then you can cut the cuttings at any time of the year.

Reproduction methods

Datura is propagated in 2 ways: seeds and cuttings... In the first case, reproduction can begin in the spring.

Propagation by cuttings- this is a very simple way, thanks to which the roots grow back quickly. For rooting, you can use sphagnum, water or soil. There can be only one internode on the handle. The main thing is to remove all the leaves before rooting. To accelerate root formation, growth promoters should be used. If grafting is carried out in September, then for the winter the seedling can be removed in a warm room, and transplanted into open ground in the spring. Some experts prefer to root cuttings in the spring.

Care

Datura is considered unpretentious. His main need is nutrient soil, timely cutting and frequent abundant watering. The flowering of the plant directly depends on the latter. In hot weather, daily watering is recommended. If the dope is removed indoors for the winter, then watering is reduced to once a week.

During the active development of datura, it is necessary to apply fertilizers every week. It can be mineral and organic. Top dressing is stopped during the dormant period, that is, in winter. If the plant was planted on acidic soil, then once a season it is necessary to spill the soil with lime milk.

needs cropping... This is because flowers only appear on young shoots. To keep flowering, you should constantly remove wilted flowers, leaving only the fruits to obtain seeds. Of course, they can accidentally crumble to the ground. To avoid this is simple: just put special bags on the boxes. After the end of flowering in September, the branches are carefully trimmed, which makes it possible to form a crown.

Wintering

Datura is considered an annual plant, as it freezes in the open field in winter. Some gardeners decide to experiment. They dig up plants in the fall, transplant them into a pot and clean them indoors. At the same time, it is important that the temperature was about + 15º C... In winter, the plants shed most of the leaves, but after a few weeks, new shoots and young leaves appear.

During wintering, it is necessary to periodically moisten the soil and carry out sanitary pruning. It is done before preparing the dope for winter period... In the spring, it is customary to cut the dope to get cuttings.

It must be remembered that dope is considered poisonous... Too frequent contact with the plant may cause headaches and other symptoms of poisoning. For this reason, flowers should not be kept in the bedroom or children's room.

"It was sculpted like a sweet dope when the gardens bloomed ..." Its flowers have not just a sweet, but a cloying smell. In general, the people's associations with this plant are not very positive, although it is indeed often grown in gardens as an ornamental plant.

Datura ordinary belongs to the nightshade family and is a completely ambiguous plant. On the one hand - poison and hallucinogen, on the other - medicinal plant and wonderful decoration garden. Gardeners love it for its luxurious large - up to 12 cm - white, yellow, pink or purple funnel-shaped flowers. True, the leaves do not smell very pleasant, especially at night. So the grass is protected from herbivores.

Datura is a rather large herbaceous plant, it can grow up to 120 cm. The stem is erect, the leaves are large, ovoid, whole along the edge, dark green above and lighter on the lower side. A powerful white root that can grow rapidly. The grass is heavily bushy and, during flowering, is densely covered with flowers. The flowering period is August-September.

Although Asia is considered the homeland of the common Datura, this herb grows almost everywhere in Europe, middle lane Russia, the Caucasus, Crimea and Ukraine. It is unpretentious, moreover, it is indiscriminate in places of growth. These can be roadside ditches, places near landfills, houses, and in general where there is a lot of garbage. In the mountains, the plant can rise to medium heights, it is often found along the banks of rivers.

All parts of the plant are poisonous, especially the seeds. Datura fruit - an oval box covered with thorns - contains from 500 to 800 quite large seeds black color.

Datura ordinary care and photo of flowers

Planting the dope on personal plot, choose a place away from the children's area if you have one. Its smell is really intoxicating. In addition, little children are curious and strive to taste and touch everything. There is probably no point in talking about the consequences of such curiosity, they are obvious.

Despite the exceptional unpretentiousness of the common dope, some care for the plant is still needed.

A place sunny, dry and calm are chosen for it. Its tall stems break from a strong breeze. Beautiful flowering bush can serve as an excellent disguise for old manure or compost heaps. Moreover, he will mask not only an ugly look, but also an unpleasant smell.

Datura ordinary can serve as an excellent cover for the compost heap.

Watering dope needs abundant, otherwise flowering will be meager. In a normal summer, it is watered once every two days, in a hot summer - every day. It is not recommended to water the plant with a hose; it needs settled water, and it is better to use hard water.

Feed dope necessarily once a week. If it grows on dung or compost heap, mineral fertilizers should be used, organic matter is enough for him. If you planted it in ordinary soil, then you need to alternate the mineral complex with organic fertilizers.

Important! If your site has slightly acidic soil, under the dope it needs to be neutralized once a summer by watering it with lime milk, using 1 g per 1 liter of water.

To stimulate flowering, the buds must be removed.

The soil should be loose and fertile.

Pruning Is a necessary procedure. It forms a shrub and increases flowering. After its completion, the dope is carried out radical pruning, cutting off all the shoots. But only if it is grown as a perennial and hibernates in the warmth of an apartment in a pot. As a rule, it is used as an annual plant, because it cannot withstand winter frosts in the open field.

To stimulate flowering If you do not plan to collect seeds, the faded buds need to be removed. If collecting seeds is necessary, leave the largest faded buds on the bush, cut off the rest.

Self seeding- this is a common thing for a dope. When the fruit ripens, it cracks, the seeds spill out into the soil and germinate easily. But it is not a fact that they will survive the winter, especially the harsh one. If you plan to collect them, you need to use a little trick, otherwise you may not be in time. When the box begins to ripen, it needs to be wrapped in a bag made from ordinary nylon tights. As a rule, seeds collected from their plants give a much higher germination rate than purchased ones.

Datura planting

Planting a dope is not difficult, you just need to know how. It germinates beautifully from seeds.

Preparation of planting material

Datura seedlings are planted in May.

In order to plant an already grown bush in the ground in the spring, you need to start planting seeds in February-March. Seeds harvested in autumn are placed in water with the addition of a growth stimulant and kept for 12 hours. The soil is prepared from sifted garden soil, humus and coarse river sand. It is advisable to steam the soil.

Sowing and growing seedlings

Seeds can be planted in separate containers, or in a common container. They are simply laid out on the soil and sprinkled on top. The temperature for germination is about 15 ° C. The first shoots will hatch in 2 weeks. After the appearance of the first leaves, the seedlings are seated in separate pots. Seedlings planted in separate containers do not need to dive. Seedlings are grown in a well-lit place, the temperature is raised to 18-20 ° C. When diving, the seedlings are well buried down to the very cotyledons. Watering should be regular, but not plentiful. By the time of transplanting into open ground, the sprouts should be at least 15 cm.

Planting seedlings in open ground

Seedlings are planted in a prepared place in May. The holes need to be made at a distance of about a meter from each other, because the dope grows strongly, and he does not like tightness. It is better to transplant seedlings by transshipment, because its roots do not like very much to be disturbed. Otherwise, the plant will adapt to a new place for a long time.

Planting seeds in open ground

Datura seeds are sown, open ground, at the end of May.

This is also possible, but you need to be prepared for the fact that they will germinate for a long time. The earth should already be warm enough. The best time- the end of May. The place for landing is chosen calm and sunny. Just like seedlings, seeds are planted at a distance of a meter from each other. It is impossible to deepen the seeds more than 10 cm into the soil, they will not germinate. Seeds are prepared for planting in the same way as for sowing seedlings.

Datura breeding

Datura can be propagated by seed, as described above. Another way is grafting. In September, it is cut from the bush required amount cuttings up to 10 cm long. Lower leaves completely removed. It can be rooted in water, in wet sphagnum or directly in the ground. A growth stimulant can be used to speed up root formation.

The rooted stalk survives the winter in the house, and in the spring, at the end of May, it is planted in open ground. If dope is grown as perennial and hibernates in the house, cuttings can be done at any time.

Wintering

As already mentioned, the dope cannot hibernate in the open ground, it freezes out. You can try to keep it in the house on an insulated loggia at a temperature of 14-16 ° C or in a dry basement, where there is at least a little light, at 6-8 ° C. In both cases, the plant sheds its leaves and retires. During the winter months, he needs moderate watering to keep the ground from drying out. In the spring it awakens and can be returned to open ground.

In the fall, before placing it for the winter, sanitary pruning of the bush is done. In the spring after waking up - the formation. It is she who gives a large number of cuttings.

Important! A plant grown from a cuttings will be stronger and more viable than the mother shrub.

Datura ordinary is extremely poisonous, so all work with it is carried out with gloves.
