It can be easily damaged. A very common defect is the occurrence of scratches. You should not immediately get rid of the spoiled table, but you should try to restore it. This process can be entrusted to master restorers or try to restore the lacquered table with your own hands.

Restoration technique

Let's figure out how to restore a lacquered table using the restoration method. This is one of the most better ways the return of a dignified look to the varnished table. For example, to eliminate scratches, it is necessary to remove a layer of varnish on the defective places, and then apply a new one. This method is quite effective and will get rid of any scratches. But not only scratches are a problem for lacquered furniture... The next disadvantage that may appear over time is darkening varnished surface... As a result of clouding the surface of the countertop, appearance the table begins to lose significantly in relation to other furniture. Such a defect is corrected in a similar way: removing the old layer of varnish and reapplying a new one. This method is quite simple, and it is quite possible to varnish old table do it yourself.

The sequence of the restoration work

You can renew an old lacquered table in several stages. But first, you should prepare some tools and materials and think about your safety. So, let's get acquainted in detail with the algorithm for performing work on the restoration of the lacquered table.

Determine the degree of wear

Before restoring the varnish on the table, you should first assess the degree of defects formed.

Choosing a material

The question arises of how to remove the varnish from the table. The correct materials must be selected to ensure the quality of the restoration. Many believe that problem areas can be removed with alcohol. In some cases, minor defects can indeed be applied with alcohol, but unforeseen consequences may occur, such as roughness, light areas, etc. Therefore, we will focus on specialized materials that will become good helpers for novice craftsmen.

  • Shellac varnish. Such material not only helps to restore the surface, but also emphasize its originality. This is one of the oldest and most proven materials. The consistency of the polish is more like a liquid than a varnish. To achieve a high-quality result, this composition is applied in about 50 - 60 layers. It is because of this that the original deep color is achieved. This is very good option, which will remove scratches on the lacquered table.
  • Nitrocellulose varnish. This solution is used to restore large table surfaces. For its application, sprayers are used, which provide a very fast and uniform spraying. At a lower speed, the droplets of the solution begin to solidify, and the desired effect of a smooth and uniform surface will be quite difficult to achieve. That is why it is not recommended to use standard spray guns, which additionally form air bubbles, which are almost impossible to get rid of.
  • Pentaphthalic varnish. it perfect material for table restoration, as it is quite simple to work with. It does not require special devices for application and dries quickly enough. Apply it in at least 4 layers. It is possible to exclude the acquisition of primer solutions, since the first layer of pentaphthalic varnish will act as a primer. After applying the composition and completely drying it, sanding should be done.

After you have decided on the choice of the restoration composition, you need to pay attention to such a moment as the definition of color. You can use a colorless varnish, or you can purchase a varnish that imitates the color of any wood. In the second case, it is necessary to correctly determine the tone of the varnish.

Step-by-step instruction

Let's give detailed instructions, which will answer the question of how to properly varnish a wooden table. It consists of several stages:

  • The preparatory stage consists of the following aspects:
  • the surface of the table is thoroughly cleaned using a specialized compound or using ordinary warm water;
  • remove the damaged layer with a scraper;
  • we begin to grind the surface with sandpaper until matte is achieved;
  • we clean the surface of dust.
  • Applying varnish on water based:
  • the surface is covered with several layers of water-based varnish;
  • each subsequent layer is applied after the previous one has completely dried;
  • after last layer completely dry, we perform surface sanding;
  • we clean the surface of dust.
  • Performing work with acrylic-based varnish:
  • initially we choose a varnish that matches the surface of the table in shade and shine;
  • diluting the varnish by 15% with white spirit, priming the surface;
  • after the primer layer has dried, we perform intermediate grinding;
  • cover the table surface with undiluted varnish in several layers, letting the previous layer dry beforehand;
  • we produce finishing surface grinding.
  • Please note that after all layers have been applied to give the surface a glossy shine, the surface should be sanded.

By following all the recommendations, you can get a very high quality varnished surface. It is clear that in order to get a decent quality, you should use a spray gun. Below is translated a video on varnishing the table and given useful tips for restoration.

Restoration methods

There are many ways to improve, decorate, and refurbish an old table. But before starting work, you need to prepare the future "canvas" - remove the old coating, sand it, screw all the nuts and screws (so as not to stagger and dangle), putty, stain (if necessary) or varnish. Then start decorating. Conventionally, all methods of decorating a wooden table can be divided into two groups:

    Surface painting, including self-painting, painting through a stencil or using stamps;

    Surface gluing special materials - wallpaper, self-adhesive film, decoupage with napkins or interesting clippings, overlaying, photo printing, the use of mosaics or tiles.

The glass table will have to be updated a little differently. It is quite possible to glue it with wallpaper, film or make decoupage from the inside.

You can also paint the glass surface with special paints and get an interesting design.

How to upgrade a glass table?

Beautiful glass coffee table quite often can be found in modern apartments... As a result of improper care glass top loses its attractive appearance.

The legs are loose, chips and scratches appear on the glass. If there are scratches on the tabletop, in which a nail can fit, then it is better to give the table to a special workshop, dispose of or replace the glass with a new one.

If the damage is not so terrible, then you can try to reanimate this piece of furniture.

You can get rid of the glass countertop from scratches at home both by handymen (toothpaste, soda, transparent nail polish) and special means(GOI paste, car polishes, means for polishing precious metals).

First you need to clean the surface, then gently rub in or apply the composition to the scratch. Do not overdo it, otherwise you may get several more instead of one scratch. Wait a little for the compound to set and clean the glass again.

To get rid of scratches, use the most common, non-gel toothpaste... Soda is dissolved with water to a state of gruel, approximately in a ratio of 1: 1. GOI paste must be used proven, real. Transparent varnish will not completely eliminate the problem, but only partially. At a certain angle of illumination, it will be noticeable that there were scratches in that place.

Loose table legs are also subject to repair. Usually, the table legs are attached with special glue. This glue can dry out over time. It can be removed and replaced with new adhesive. If the legs are attached to screws, self-tapping screws, then they can be unscrewed and replaced with new ones.

Now the table can be given a completely new sound using various decorating techniques:

    Paste over the table from the seamy side with decorative foil. Avoid bubbles when wrapping the table. It is better to glue the film a little, gradually pushing back the substrate. If bubbles do appear, then you can pierce them with a needle and smooth them out;

    Make decoupage. To do this, you need pictures (for example, from napkins or on rice paper, or images specially prepared for this), PVC glue or special for these works, brushes, a file, varnish for decoupage. The necessary equipment can be purchased in shops for creativity and scrapbooking;

    Paint with stained glass paints. Acrylic contour, stained glass paints, cotton swabs and napkins, alcohol for degreasing the surface, a sketch of a drawing, scotch tape - this is a set of items that will be needed for this work;

    Fix the backlight around the table perimeter, led strip;

    If the design allows you to make a mini-garden, an aquarium or a bright composition of stones, shells. When the table has a small box, which is covered with a tabletop on top, then you can put a pallet on its bottom and plant succulents there (plants that do not need frequent watering). Or decorate the box with shells, stones, or other items.

How to restore a wooden table?

Wooden table can be made from MDF or chipboard, or from solid wood. In any case, the restoration of the old table at home will take place in several stages. Let's take a look at all these steps.

    Preparatory- check all fasteners, disassemble the table and re-fasten, clean the surface.

    Removing the old coating. Sometimes it may only be necessary for this special composition which removes varnish, paint. But most often you also have to use coarse-grained and fine-grained sandpaper, grinder... It is necessary to sand along the grain to avoid the formation of new scratches.

    Sealing cracks and chips. To do this, you need a putty for wood or a polyester analog. After filling, re-sanding. At this stage, you can stop and not carry out further work (except varnishing), cover the wood with a stain, which will give the table new color and view. For example, turn an oak table into an imitation of wenge or another type of wood. But when the damage is significant, the next step is necessary.

    Primer and subsequent puttying. Without a primer, the varnish will lie poorly and unevenly. An alkyd or shellac primer is suitable for wood.

    Giving the final design. At this stage, painting, pasting of the table is carried out. If the table is painted, the paint should be applied in at least 2 coats.

    Final coating with varnish or wax. Varnish and wax should be covered in several layers.

This refurbished polished table will last for years to come.

Written or magazine, children's or toilet - regardless of its purpose, it will become an interior decoration, because you spent so much time on it and put your soul into it.

How to recolor?

Table staining is the most popular restoration method. What could be more laconic than a white table? Only black. Therefore, the choice of paint (acrylic or oil, enamel) is very important. How long the restored table will serve depends on what paint the repair was made, or rather on its characteristics.

To choose a paint, you need to understand where and how the table will be used, what materials it is made of.

    Water-based acrylic paint suitable for heated rooms, withstands moisture well. Dries quickly. Can be washed off with water during application. But after drying, it does not lend itself to water. Alkyd compounds are considered more reliable.

    Oil paints are losing their popularity due to an unreasonably high expense.

    Wood enamels attract with their glossy surface and high performance. In addition, nitro-enamel paints set quickly.

The paint was selected and purchased; further repair of the table presupposes its coloring.

The surfaces must be pretreated, cleaned, removed the old coating, removed scratches and chips, putty, primed, protected decorative inserts, for example, glass, tape. And only after the primer has dried can you paint.

To give an even color, the paint is applied in several layers. The first layer is actually rubbed into the surface.

Two or three layers are enough for a rich color to show through.

To apply an additional pattern to the countertop, you can use pre-prepared stencils or the most common tulle. When the base color has dried, the tulle (or stencil) is fixed and the pattern paint is applied. You can do this with a brush, but it is better to use a sponge or spray paint. Ready product, to give more aesthetics and strengthen the surface, varnish.

To give a graphic pattern (lines, zigzags, rhombuses, squares), you can use scotch tape. Mark the future drawing with adhesive tape, apply the first color with paint. If necessary, repeat the procedure with other colors. Varnish the finished worktop.

If it is necessary to achieve the effect of aged wood, then first a special composition is applied to the treated surface (cleaned, sanded and primed).

Patination can be done with a dark stain. Then the first coat of paint is applied to the wood. Then a second layer is applied lighter and more liquid paint... When the paint is dry, we go over the surface of the sandpaper. The desired effect has been achieved.

The table is ready for topcoat varnish.

We update the plastic table

Many are afraid to start decorating a plastic table because of its material. In fact, a plastic surface is a more rewarding material for restoration. It does not require preliminary and lengthy processing.

The maximum is getting rid of scratches and chips. Well, if the surface is even, then it is enough to sand it just a little to roughen it up, the paint or soil could adhere better, or degrease it for further work- gluing films, wallpapers, tiles, mosaics, eggshell or decoupage.

To decoupage a plastic table, you will first need to process the table top. Sand it, put acrylic primer. Then think about how you will arrange the pictures. Make small sketches of their future location. Usually napkins or drawings on rice paper are used for decoupage, but for these purposes you can use any clippings and even pictures printed on a printer.

At the end of the work, the tabletop is varnished.

For a spectacular decoupage, you can use fabric. For decorative purposes, cotton material with a bright pattern is suitable. The decoupage procedure is the same, only PVC glue is applied immediately to the entire fabric.

Preparing for reworking the table

Before giving a coffee table a new look, it must be carefully prepared. To do this, you need the following tools:

  • grinder or special drill attachment;
  • a set of sandpaper of varying grain size;
  • flat metal spatula;
  • screwdriwer set;
  • adjustable wrench.

Craquelure-style coffee table restoration - creating a cracking effect.

First you need to disassemble the table, remove the table top, legs, disconnect the shelves and drawers. Remove all fasteners very carefully, being careful not to damage the wood. If necessary, the adhered bolts can be cut or drilled out. Be sure to remove all hardware, even if you intend to reuse it.

Next, you need to remove decorative coating... The veneer comes off easily if its edge is picked up with a spatula. Varnish coating it cannot be restored at home, so it must also be removed. Old oil paint it is easier to scrape off if it is preheated, for example, with the help of a building hair dryer. Be extremely careful not to scratch the surface.

Every detail must be thoroughly sanded to bare wood.

All large cracks and chips must be putty. For this, a product designed for woodworking is suitable. If desired, it can be tinted with a few drops of water-based paint or a special pigment available in stores. Small scratches and the cracks are filled with epoxy glue. After the putty is completely dry, the surface of the furniture must be processed again with fine-grain sandpaper.

Now the coffee table must be reassembled, replacing all the fasteners with new ones. Be sure to coat the slots under the fasteners with glue and tighten them with clamps for about a day. At the last stage of preparing furniture for decoration, all surfaces must be thoroughly degreased.

Decorating countertops with mosaics

Figure 1. Using a mosaic, you can not only make a coffee table unique, but also hide cracks and spots that appear. In addition, the whole process does not take much time and money.

Any alteration of a coffee table begins with painting it. You can cover the entire surface with wood stain, then the structure of the wood will appear more clearly. Usually, a transparent agent or stain is used, which contains coloring pigments. In this way, the furniture is given a resemblance to expensive types of wood: oak, sandalwood or ebony.

If you want to paint your table, then it is wiser to use acrylic paints. They dry quickly, do not leave streaks and have virtually no unpleasant odor.

In combination with a countertop decorated with a tiled panel, both dark and light furniture look great. Therefore, the appearance of a coffee table completely depends on your taste and the general interior of the room in which you are going to use it.

But it should be remembered that under light paint on old furniture, yellow spots may appear over time. To prevent this from happening, the table must first be covered with 1 layer of transparent acrylic varnish.

After the varnish is completely dry, 2 coats of primer are applied to all surfaces. It will add strength to the final coat. The coffee table is painted last. It is most convenient to use spray paint in cylinders. Such a coating turns out to be even, with a slight glossy shine. In addition, it is easier to paint over with a spray bottle. hard-to-reach places... But sometimes such dyes (unlike traditional acrylic paints) have a pungent specific odor. Therefore, it is wiser to carry out work in a well-ventilated room or outdoors.

Now you can start decorating the countertop.

Product decoration

For a mosaic panel, you will need the following materials:

  • tile (best buy ready-made modules fixed on a grid or paper);
  • tile adhesive;
  • trowel mastic (you can purchase a colored product that will add expressiveness to the panel);
  • masking tape.

In addition, you will need a small notched trowel, an old toothbrush, a clean rag, and a large household sponge.

Tile adhesive must be diluted as indicated in the instructions. Don't cook a lot of ingredients at once. You will need about ½ cup of grout to lay the tiles on the countertop.

Using a spatula, apply the adhesive to the wrong side of the tile block. Turn the module over and press it against the surface so that excess glue comes through the mesh. With a clean cloth, remove excess composition by scrubbing the mosaic thoroughly. But do it carefully, otherwise the module may move. The table must be allowed to dry for about 24 hours.

Small rubber spatula the composition is applied to the seams between the tiles. Then with a toothbrush you need to "drive" it into the gaps of the module. This is required in order to remove air bubbles from the grout. The mastic must be allowed to dry for 15-25 minutes, and then the excess must be removed by washing the resulting panel with a sponge.

The result of this decoration can be seen in Fig. 1.

In this way, you can transform not only a coffee table, but also, for example, a bathroom cabinet.

Decor with wallpaper

Figure 2. Decorating the coffee table with the remnants of wallpaper will help it harmoniously fit into new interior premises.

DIY furniture can be transformed even with a piece of wallpaper that remained after the renovation. Such a restoration will take you about 2 hours, and as a result you will receive a very elegant piece of furniture made in the Art Nouveau style. Such a coffee table is quite difficult to find even in salons. exclusive furniture... To remodel the table, you will need the following materials:

  • vinyl wallpaper (their size should be equal to the area of the table top plus 15 cm of hem allowances on each side);
  • wallpaper glue;
  • transparent furniture varnish or a special composition for decoupage;
  • furniture carnations with decorative heads.

Also, do not forget to prepare a plastic spatula, brushes or rollers for applying glue and varnish, centimeter ruler, pencil and hammer.

If you have chosen this way of transforming your coffee table, then it is better not to paint the tabletop first, but to cover it with 2 layers of furniture varnish. Before you start decorating, the surface must be completely dry.

Dilute the wallpaper glue and let it swell for 10-15 minutes. This time is just enough for you to remove from the tabletop required dimensions and cut a blank from the wallpaper. Be sure to notch the allowances in several places and notch them in the corners by cutting out the triangles. Try on the workpiece by carefully bending the allowances.

Apply glue to the wrong side of the wallpaper, roll it up, letting it soak in the product. You can also glue the countertop itself with glue.

Lay the wallpaper over the furniture, carefully straightening out any creases and creases. Remove air bubbles with a plastic spatula. Fold in the allowances and glue them to the inside of the table. Let the glue dry completely and cover the coffee table with 2 coats of varnish (letting the previous coat dry completely).

Then, using a ruler and pencil, mark out the future location of the studs. They can be placed in 1 line or make up an interesting pattern from the heads. It is only necessary to ensure that the same distance is maintained between the caps. Drive in nails along the lines.

The result of the rework is shown in Fig. 2.

Instead of wallpaper, you can use a piece of fabric, such as a satin curtain. Then the tabletop will also acquire an original texture.
