Radon treatment indications and contraindications. Radon baths: benefits and harms

- one of the areas of balneological treatment. Its healing effect is achieved through the influence mineral water, enriched with an inert gas, on the human body immersed in a radon bath. The effectiveness of this procedure was known back in the 19th century, and it has not lost its popularity today.

The main indications for the use of radon therapy are joint pathologies and problems associated with spinal health. Prescribing such treatment requires a careful analysis of indications and contraindications, as well as individual characteristics body.

A few words about radon and its effects

This colorless and odorless inert gas is the 86th element of the periodic table. For my short life during its half-life it emits radioactive α particles. Their penetrating ability has a powerful therapeutic effect on the body.

Natural mineral springs of water enriched with radon have the greatest healing effect. That is why sanatoriums offering radon baths based on it and located in close proximity to a natural reservoir of radon water are so popular.

There are no more than 300 sources of pure radon, most of which are concentrated in the following countries, regions and cities:

    Russia - Altai, Crimea, Primorye, Pyatigorsk, Molokovka (about 30 in total);

    Germany – Bad Nauheim, Bad Brambach;

    Ukraine - Khmilnik;

    Georgia – Tskhaltubo.

The amount of radon in natural sources is not the same; depending on the concentration of this gas, they are divided into:

    Low radon (1-10 nanoCuries per liter);

    Strong radon (120-200 nanoCuries per liter).

If it is impossible to obtain radon baths from natural sources, they are organized artificially. For such baths, a water-salt solution of radon is used, prepared in a special vessel - a bubbler. Since this solution is highly concentrated, its radioactivity is increased, so the bubbler is enclosed in a lead container, and the bath is prepared in strict accordance with sanitary standards and safety regulations.

Alpha particles released during the half-life of radon settle on the skin, forming an active plaque. Thanks to α-radiation, protein and water molecules contained in the thickness of the skin are ionized, forming oxygen metabolites and hydroperoxides.

As a result of this process of protein radiolysis, autoantigens are formed and helper T lymphocytes are sensitized. Their combination leads to the release of cytokines and acceleration of the formation of immunoglobulins, neutral proteases and biological active substances. Such stimulation of immune processes in the skin triggers antioxidant processes and normalizes redox reactions at the cellular level. If there are scars on the skin, exposure to radon leads to an acceleration of the synthesis of glycosaminoglycans, the formation and ordering of the structure of granulation tissue.

The discovery of the healing effect of radon waters due to α-radiation at the beginning of the last century was explained by the mysterious process of emanation (outflow, spread). Over the course of its history, radon therapy has experienced several periods of interest and oblivion of this technique. The triumph experienced by the discoverers of this method, after a series of radiation man-made disasters was replaced by a period of oblivion and excessive fears.

Publications have appeared in the American press that radon treatment is nothing more than absolute stupidity. A modern balanced approach to radon therapy classifies the technique as an auxiliary method of physiotherapy, the purpose of which is the prerogative of the doctor. Not all experts adequately assess the indications and contraindications for radon treatment, as the human body’s reaction to it is so individual.

The history of Russian radon therapy dates back to 1867. It was then that the Belokurikha radon hot springs were discovered. At the beginning of the 20th century (1907-1908), scientists from the Tomsk Technological University conducted a study of the gas and water of this first Russian resort and classified them as low-radon waters.

Effects during the procedure

During this procedure, part of the radon (from 0.3 to 6.4%) contained in the water passes into the human body through the skin and respiratory organs. The main part of α-particles settles in skin cells, about 3% - in the cellular layer of the bronchi.

The strength of interaction between mediators, biologically active substances, α- and β -adrenoreceptors of skin tissues increase due to the effects of radon, their limited blood flow undergoes two-phase changes.

In the first phase, the vessels of the external dermal plexus experience spasm for a short time (1-3 minutes). In the second phase, there is a prolonged expansion of arterioles and a slowdown in venular outflow. The skin becomes hyperemic, the volume of circulating blood increases. Radon stimulation leads to a significant decrease in the conductivity of nerve fibers that are not covered with myelin. This leads to pain relief. The autonomic nervous system experiences an increase in the tone of the parasympathetic department and a decrease in the tone of its sympathetic department.

Exposure to radon leads to the following changes in the cardiovascular and respiratory systems:

    The stroke and minute volume of the heart increases;

    Systole shortens and diastole increases;

    Heart rate does not change;

    Breathing becomes deep and measured.

These processes occur due to changes in proteins cell membranes these organs, modulation of connections in the ligand-receptor direction.

Processes occurring in the glands that produce hormones under the influence of radon therapy:

    The adrenal cortex is activated;

    The synthesis of corticosteroids is stimulated;

    Insulin production increases;

    The processes of fat metabolism and glycolysis are activated: weight decreases, the concentration of free fats and p-lipoproteins in the blood decreases;

    Ovarian function and production slow down.

Radon therapy leads to an acceleration of metabolism in the organs and tissues of the human body.

Therapeutic effects

Baths using radon have a beneficial effect on the body of patients, causing the following consequences:

    Analgesic effect;

    Relief of inflammation;

    Stimulation of immunity;

    Regeneration and repair of organs and tissues;

    Activation of metabolism;

    vasodilating effect;

    epithelization of the skin and mucous membranes.

All metabolic processes at the cellular level are accelerated, damaged organs and tissues are restored, and inflammatory processes are effectively treated.

    Endocrine pathologies: diabetes mellitus, obesity (grade 1-2), increased thyroid function (stage 1-3 hyperthyroidism), metabolic disorders (gout);

    Diseases of the female reproductive system: pathologies of the ovaries, uterus, appendages, chronic infertility, manifestations of menopause, neoplasms (fibroids, endometriosis);

    Diseases of the male reproductive system: prostatitis, hormonal imbalance;

    Gastrointestinal diseases: inflammatory diseases of the intestines, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, stomach, chronic ulcerative process;

    Cardiovascular pathologies: rehabilitation after a heart attack (first month), varicose veins, cardiosclerosis, atherosclerosis (initial stage), myocardial dystrophy, mitral valve defects, hypertension (stage 1, 2), angina pectoris (1-3 FC);

    Diseases of the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system(radiculitis, neuritis, plexitis, neuralgia), rehabilitation after spinal cord injuries and traumatic brain injuries, neuroses, neurasthenia;

    Pathologies of the musculoskeletal system: polyarthritis, osteitis, arthritis, osteomyelitis, spondylitis, limited mobility and degeneration of joints, consequences of bone fractures;

    Dermatological problems: seborrhea, neurodermatitis, lichen, eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, treatment of keloid scars, non-healing wounds, trophic ulcers, bedsores;

    Pathologies of the respiratory system: COPD, sinusitis, rhinitis, inflammatory processes, bronchial asthma.

Contraindications for radon baths

There are categories of patients for whom radon baths are strictly contraindicated. First of all, these are people who, due to their occupation, are in a zone of increased radiation. Additional contraindications:

    Pregnancy and lactation;

    Childhood;

    Diseases in the acute stage;

    Active inflammatory processes;

    Tuberculosis damage to organs and tissues;

    Tumors of any etiology;

    Radiation sickness;

    Blood cancer;

    VSD (dystonia);

    Epilepsy;

    The presence of ulcers on the skin;

    Individual intolerance to radon (shortness of breath, dizziness, increased sweating);

    Atrial fibrillation;

    Angina pectoris (4 FC);

    Severe neurosis;

    Extrasystole;

  • Hyperthyroidism.

All these conditions can worsen during treatment with radon baths, progress to an acute stage, or negatively affect well-being.

Method of treatment with radon baths

Radon treatment is absolutely safe in terms of radiation exposure. With a volumetric activity of radon baths of 1.5 kBq per cubic decimeter, short-term irradiation is created with a dose 15 times less than the maximum permissible concentration.

Preparation of a radon bath: 0.1 liter of radon water-salt concentrate is added to fresh water with a temperature of 34-36 °C and a volume of 200 liters. The entire procedure occurs in strict accordance with the instructions.

Procedure behavior: the patient takes a bath for 12-15 minutes, immersing himself in water up to the level of the nipples. Patients with cardiovascular pathologies can descend into the radon solution only to the level of the navel. The bath ends with carefully drying the skin with a towel; rubbing is not recommended.

Course duration ranges from 12 to 15 baths. It can be repeated no earlier than in six months or a year. The effect of radon baths is felt by patients for 6 months.

The effect of radon therapy is enhanced if it is combined with carbon dioxide and sodium chloride baths.

Additional procedures using radon:

    Rectal and vaginal irrigation– 18-20 procedures are carried out with radon water at a temperature of 35-40 °C for vaginal baths, and 37-40 °C for rectal microenemas. They are alternated as follows: after 2-3 days of procedures, a rest day is allocated.

    Air-radon baths– have all the properties of radon baths, but in fact are not baths, since the patient is exposed to an air environment enriched with radon. The patient is in a special box, and his head is on the surface, it is isolated from the contents of the box by a sealed neck cuff.

    Drinking radon water– used for gout, gastrointestinal diseases. In patients, metabolic processes, liver and stomach functions, and intestinal motility are normalized, and the regeneration of the mucous membrane is accelerated.

In addition, radon applications and inhalations, and mouth rinsing are carried out.

Memo for the patient

The main provisions common to all patients of radon clinics can be formulated in a memo:

    An examination by a doctor before undergoing treatment is strictly necessary;

    Taking a bath should be done with an empty bowel and bladder;

    Optimal time taking the procedure - half an hour to an hour after eating, radon therapy is not carried out on an empty stomach and immediately after eating;

    The patient’s position during the procedure is calm, relaxed, without unnecessary movements;

    Condition after stress or significant physical activity– contraindication to taking a bath;

    Exposure to alcohol and nicotine is unacceptable during radon treatment;

    After a radon bath, rest for 30 minutes to an hour is required.

Compliance with these rules will increase the effectiveness of treatment. Alekseeva Maria Yurievna | General practitioner

It is very important to carry out therapy only under the supervision of a qualified specialist. To obtain lasting high results, you need to complete the whole course. It can consist of 10, 15, 20 sessions.

If there is fibroids, physiotherapeutic procedures are prohibited. But radon therapy comes to the rescue in this case.

The benefits of radon baths for women in the treatment of gynecological diseases

Taking healing baths is very often used to cure many gynecological diseases. This is an effective way to eliminate pathologies in the pelvic organs. Effectiveness in treatment is noted:

· uterine fibroids;

· female infertility;

· endometriosis;

· premenopausal and menopausal disorders.

For fibroids, baths can be either artificial or natural. Natural sources contain radon, which is naturally occurring. The use of waters that have a low concentration of the chemical element is provided.

Other baths are obtained by diluting concentrated aqueous solution this element. It is important to follow all safety rules and dilute the solution using a special method, since it is characterized by high radioactivity. When curing fibroids, the bath should be no more than 35 degrees.

Such baths are prescribed for this diagnosis strictly individually. The location is determined by the size, growth rate, age of the patient, location of the nodules and the severity of all symptoms. The session lasts about 10 minutes.

Treatment of fibroids should be carried out with a course once a year. Maximum effectiveness is observed during the first six months. Afterwards the effect begins to gradually decrease.

The benefits of radon baths for other diagnoses

During menopause, radon baths are characterized by a sedative effect on the central nervous system. They can make sleep deeper, eliminate pain and anxiety.

For endometriosis, baths have an anti-inflammatory, desensitizing and analgesic effect. The coagulation system is normalized. Thanks to this, blood loss is reduced. The composition of the blood is also restored.

The benefits of radon baths are also noticed in cases of infertility. They have a good effect on the reproductive system. This is due to the products that appear during decay.

Cure of infertility is possible in the case of endocrine pathologies. It can be:

· endometriosis;

· ovarian cysts and others.

Diseases that are inflammatory in nature are also curable. These include:

· endometritis;

· chronic salpingoophoritis;

· endocervicitis.

Harm of radon baths for women

The procedures for taking radon baths in themselves do not cause harm to women. If the patient initially has some problems, then undesirable consequences may occur. The harm from treatment can be colossal. The negative consequences are as follows:

1. Provoking seizures in epileptics. This disease is the main contraindication to taking baths.

2. If there is damage to the dermis, the skin will be even more irritated. Do not perform the procedure with open injuries.

3. Such therapy may cause the growth of malignant tumors. If there is a small formation, it is prohibited to take baths. Initially, you need to contact a specialist.

4. Harm is possible when the patient suffers from leukemia or angina pectoris. These diseases are a contraindication to taking baths.

Before conducting sessions, it is important to consult with a specialist.

Also contraindications are:

· pregnancy;

· some gynecological diseases;

· a period of less than a year after a heart attack;

· all stages of radiation sickness;

· decreased thyroid function.

The healing effect depends on the correctness of the bath. Only in this case can a radon bath not cause harm to a woman. The rules are:

1. The procedure must not be performed on an empty stomach or immediately after eating. It is recommended to wait about half an hour after eating food.

2. The procedure can last from 5 to 20 minutes, depending on the disease and its severity. Only the attending physician can determine the duration. You should start with just 5 minutes and only gradually increase the time taken.

3. You should immerse yourself in the bath up to your chest, at nipple level. If cardiac disorders are observed, then the bath is taken sitz. The water level should only reach the navel.

4. It is prohibited to dry yourself with a towel after taking a bath. You just need to gently wet yourself with a napkin. After the session, do not wash for about 2 hours. It is important not to wash away the healing ions.

5. Typically, treatment courses consist of 10-15 procedures. Each session should be carried out every other day or two. Since the therapeutic effect is observed for about six months, the course must be repeated after six months to a year.

If you follow all the rules of administration and contraindications, there will be no harm to women from radon baths. It is recommended to take such baths in specialized sanatoriums under the supervision of specialists. But you need to remember that radon is still a radioactive element, so you should not get carried away with such procedures.

Radon baths are new effective method fight against many diseases. But you should not self-medicate and prescribe courses of therapy yourself.

Radon baths - the benefits and harms of the chemical element Radon

Radon is a chemical element that emits radiation. After its discovery in 1900, many scientists became interested in this inert gas and began to explore its capabilities.

It was from then on that resorts, sanatoriums and hospitals began to open, in which radon baths became a “guest program”. The most important thing that specialists must do when treating patients in this way is to select the correct amount of radon.

History of radon baths

ABOUT medicinal properties Radon was known long before its discovery. Even the Romans noticed that some sources enrich human body force, help treat illnesses and improve overall well-being, and they set up baths next to them. In 1900, after taking a huge number of samples from similar sources, scientists discovered radon - it was the healing component.

Already in 1911, the first radon resort was opened, which officially recognized the chemical element of the same name as the main component of the healing effect of the waters. It is interesting that the first Russian health resort of this kind opened in 1867, although its creators were not aware of the new element.
Today, the use of radon baths is widely known, this type of healing has its fans, and many resorts have made such treatment their specialization.

How do radon baths affect the body?

Many doctors consider radon therapy an ideal substitute for drug treatment. Radon dissolved in water easily penetrates the subcutaneous layer, passes through the fat layer and reaches the organs. Depending on the concentration of the chemical element in the water, stopping radon can occur at any of three stages.

Thanks to radon, ionization occurs in tissues, which has a surprising effect on the patient’s entire body.

While a person relaxes and calms down, which also happens under the influence of this substance, all tissues begin to work hard: the circulatory system is strengthened, the walls of blood vessels become thicker, the pulse normalizes; The condition of the skin improves, internal damage heals faster, and metabolism accelerates.

Therefore, radon is used to eliminate problems such as:

  • metabolic disorders of any degree;
  • diseases of the heart and blood vessels;
  • skin rashes;
  • diseases digestive system chronic;
  • prostatitis;
  • hormonal disorders and much more.

Radon baths are especially effective in combating blood pressure and joint pain. Procedures do not disrupt work of cardio-vascular system, but at the same time quickly alleviates the condition of patients.

Types of baths

In baths, water from natural sources is used, or fresh water is enriched, to which radon is added artificially. In natural sources, radon exists not only in its pure form, but also as derivatives. Their correct concentration brings invaluable benefits to the human body.

Based on the amount of radon in water, three types of baths are distinguished:

  1. baths with low radon concentrations are used most often;
  2. medium concentrated;
  3. highly concentrated waters are used very rarely, only for the treatment of very serious diseases.

It doesn’t matter whether artificial or real waters are used during procedures - the benefits are the same.

How is the procedure done?

Treatment with radon baths is very simple - the patient only needs to go to the treatment center every day and lie in the water for about 10-12 minutes. This time is enough for the element to penetrate deep enough into the tissues and organs and start healing processes.
Before taking a bath for the first time, the doctor always warns that short-term pain in the area is possible after the procedure. problem areas and sharp.

We must not forget about drowsiness, which can occur while taking a bath or after - radon has a calming effect on the nervous system.

The temperature of the water in a bath with radon should be approximately equal to body temperature; complete evaporation of the element will occur 2-3 hours after the procedure. The course of treatment is 10–12 procedures, and the effect appears only after a month. It is worth remembering that you cannot spend more than 20 minutes in the bath, because radon is still a radioactive element.

Indications for treatment

Radon baths, the benefits and harms of which have been well studied and accurately described, are prescribed to patients with a variety of diseases. And not only those that affect both men and women, but also those that are clearly tied to gender.

For example, in gynecology, radon is used in the treatment of fibroids, polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis and some others. For the stronger sex, the chemical element is especially useful for prostatitis - it relieves inflammation, improves potency and blood circulation. Sexual desire also increases.

In general, doctors prescribe radon baths in many of the cases described above. The main thing that they should write down well in the recipe is the dose of the element in the water.

Contraindications

But there is no perfect cure for all diseases. Radon did not become one either. For all its remarkable properties, this chemical element was and remains radioactive. An increased dose leads to irradiation of the patient, so radon must be handled very carefully.

But even with the strictest observance of all the rules, radon baths cannot be used by some categories of people. For those who have the following contraindications:

  • radiation sickness. A person exposed to radiation should never come close to radon;
  • blood diseases such as leukemia;
  • neurosis in a severe stage;
  • epilepsy of any severity;
  • unstable angina and angina pectoris 4 F;
  • acute inflammatory processes;
  • any, no matter whether benign or malignant;
  • and some others.

In addition, radon baths also have an allergic effect. Individual intolerance is a good reason to quit procedures and look for other methods of treating existing diseases.

Conclusion

Radon baths, the contraindications to which are discussed above, are an excellent way to improve your overall health or cure certain diseases. The benefits of radon have been known for a very long time, but the conscious use of this chemical element in medicinal purposes began only at the beginning of the 20th century. Since then, resorts, sanatoriums and health resorts with radon baths have flourished.

Many fans around the world have already been able to heal and relax while sitting in water enriched with radon. Even, about which there is a lot of talk now, cannot guarantee the same effect that is obtained from radon.

Therefore, the popularity of sources with this chemical element is growing every year, and even ardent skeptics are increasingly recognizing its benefits.
Treatment with radon baths is easy and simple, the main thing is to follow the doctor’s instructions and be patient, because the result will not be immediate. However, after that the overall benefit to the body will be enormous.
Even a simple holiday warm bath with radon it will be much more interesting and useful than simply “walling” on the beach.

Video: Radon baths

The famous 16th-century physician and alchemist Paracelsus said that the same substance can be both poison and medicine at the same time. There is a radioactive gas in nature that does not cripple, but rather treats diseased organs in moderate doses. Moreover, it is also surprising in that it weighs 4 times heavier than iron and at the same time flutters freely in a gaseous state. This is radon, which people have learned to use for their own benefit.

Today a large number of Sanatoriums around the world, among other services, offer their patients the famous radon baths - all doctors know the indications and contraindications for them in detail. So, after consulting with your doctor, knowing what diseases this procedure can cure, you can hope that these miraculous baths will be prescribed for you.

Indications for treatment with radon baths

Before you go into radon waters to treat your ailments, you need to thoroughly study their effect on the body and undergo a preliminary examination in a clinic or the same sanatorium. The doctor will make the necessary instructions and tell you exactly what indications can be used for taking these healing baths. As a rule, they are prescribed in the following cases:

  • heart diseases (ischemia, angina pectoris, myocardial dystrophy, defects, cardiosclerosis);
  • atherosclerosis;
  • hypertonic disease;
  • varicose veins;
  • diseases of the peripheral (plexitis, neuralgia, radiculitis, neuritis) and central (sleep disorders and neurasthenia) nervous system;
  • problems with the musculoskeletal system (arthritis, polyarthritis, osteitis, osteomyelitis, fractures, osteoarthritis, spondylitis);
  • chronic pulmonary diseases;
  • diseases (mostly chronic) of the female genital organs inflammatory in nature(fibroids, endometriosis), and radon baths are also very effective for fibroids;
  • prostatitis;
  • diseases of the gastrointestinal tract;
  • kidney problems;
  • various skin diseases (lichen, neurodermatitis, psoriasis, scleroderma), fresh wounds, keloid scars, trophic ulcers;
  • diabetes;
  • gout;
  • obesity.

This is how radon baths turn out to be useful: the indications for their use cover quite a lot of diseases. In addition to the therapeutic effect, they can also be wonderful preventive measure for the same painful conditions. The main thing is that there are no contraindications, because in this case radon is not something to joke about: after all, the element is radioactive!

Contraindications for this procedure

Possessing a radioactive charge, albeit in small quantities, radon baths also have contraindications, when the slightest dose can turn out to be disastrous. This can result in numerous side effects (dizziness, headaches) and in exacerbation of painful conditions. Therefore, each patient who is planning to undergo this procedure undergoes a mandatory examination for the presence of contraindications:

  • radiation sickness;
  • smoking;
  • acute inflammatory processes;
  • heart failure;
  • ischemia;
  • angina pectoris;
  • heart rhythm disturbances (arrhythmia, extrasystole);
  • leukopenia;
  • hyperthyroidism;
  • individual tolerance to radon water (manifests itself in the form of sweating, shortness of breath, dizziness, etc.);
  • occupational exposure to radiation;
  • epilepsy;
  • benign tumors;
  • vegetative-vascular dysfunctions.

Only after a thorough medical examination can radon treatment be prescribed if there are no contraindications. If everything goes well, you will be able to enjoy the healing and rejuvenating effects of these miracle baths.

Method of treatment with radon baths

Having learned how radon baths are useful and what contraindications they have, it’s time to take a closer look at the procedure itself. This will help you navigate during treatment. Understanding how and what exactly is happening to your body at this time is always more pleasant than being frightened by any bubble rising from the bottom of the bath, or any new sensation for you.

1. Natural springs

Firstly, nature has given man natural radon baths in the form of springs, the waters of which are naturally saturated with radon. Such unique sources can be enjoyed at resorts in:

  • Russia: Pyatigorsk, Molokovka, Belokurikha, Ust-Kut;
  • Ukraine: Khmilnik;
  • Georgia: Tskaltubo;
  • Germany: Bad Nauheim, Bad Brambach;
  • Austria: Bad Gastein;
  • France: Bagneres-de-Luchon:
  • Italy: Ischia - and other famous European resorts.

All natural springs enriched with radon are monitored by doctors within the sanatorium to which these waters are attached. And this is completely justified: as mentioned above, the uncontrolled use of radon baths can result in the most harmful consequences for a person.

2. Artificial baths

Artificial radon baths, which are prepared directly by doctors themselves, are more widely used. The procedure is completely painless and pleasant to the senses.

1. Pour 200 liters of clean water into the bath, fresh water, which first undergoes thorough filtration. Her temperature is 37–38°C and is maintained throughout the procedure.

2. Add a concentrated solution of radon (100 ml) to this water.

3. Immerse the patient in the bath to approximately the level of the nipples. The dive should be as careful as possible so that no waves arise on the surface of the water.

4. The duration of the first procedure is 10 minutes. All subsequent ones are 15.

5. The patient’s exit from the bath should be as careful as the entrance: without disturbing the water surface.

6. After this, the patient wraps himself in a towel, but does not rub himself with it, so that the decay products of radon remain on the skin and are absorbed into it.

7. After the procedure, the patient should rest for an hour without engaging in any vigorous activity.

8. Depending on the disease, the doctor may prescribe 5 or 10 procedures.

The obvious benefits of radon baths make this procedure very popular and widely used. Moreover, it is carried out exclusively under the vigilant and constant supervision of doctors, excluding errors and side effects. How can one not recall Paracelsus: indeed, radioactive gas, which by definition should be harmful, has such a healing effect on the human body. Thanks to Mother Nature, who gave us such medicine, and to the doctors-scientists who so wisely learned to use it.

Radon baths are an element of the course of treatment for many diseases. Irradiation with microdoses leads to increased metabolism, stimulation of organ function and noticeably improves skin condition

A type of radioactive radiation is α-irradiation. An alpha particle is the nucleus of a helium atom, formed by 2 protons and 2 neurons. Its energy, as a rule, is not enough to overcome the upper stratum corneum of the skin, so alpha radiation poses a health hazard only when the particles enter the body.

Radon baths are one of the methods of using α-radiation for treatment.

The concept of the method and its types

Radon baths are a treatment method that involves the use of radioactive water and air enriched with radon-222, an inert gas. The latter option is used less frequently, since the decay of radioactive radon in the lungs is one of the reasons. Radioactive water is safer because alpha particles cannot penetrate the skin.

Radon is found in more than 300 natural sources: Altai, Crimea, Pyatigorsk, Tskhal-Tubo and so on. Natural sources are believed to be more effective. However, radon baths can also be prepared artificially. For this purpose, a concentrated saline solution is used, which is diluted using special methods.

Radon baths are classified according to gas concentration:

  • weak radon - contain from 1 to 10 nCi/l;
  • highly radon - 120–200 nCi/l.

The effect of a radon bath of both natural and artificial origin is the same. A radioactive element decays, generating a stream of alpha particles. The latter ionize water and protein molecules in the dermis, which leads to the formation of toxic hydroperoxides. This seemingly negative process causes the appearance of autoantibodies - breakdown products of protein radiolysis.

Autoantigens are transported by cells and reacted by sensitized helper T lymphocytes. As a result of the reaction, cytokines are released. And, most importantly, neutral proteases, immunoglobulins and other biologically active compounds are synthesized.

Radon alpha radiation promotes cell differentiation in the stratum spinosum and stratum basale of the epidermis. In addition, it stimulates the production of melanin and glycosaminoglycans in scar tissue.

During bathing, about 0.3–6.4% of radon enters the body through the skin and lungs. This dose is considered safe. Minor irradiation leads to an improvement in the activity of receptors for biologically active substances.

Are radon baths beneficial or harmful? The answer is in the video below:

Pros and cons of this treatment

Radon baths are an auxiliary therapeutic agent and are included in complex therapy in the treatment of certain diseases, including skin diseases. They are rarely used as an independent remedy.

The advantages of the method include:

  • anti-inflammatory effect– in some cases, radon baths are considered an excellent alternative to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. First of all, baths are prescribed for problems with joints and the musculoskeletal system;
  • radon baths are very effective for various skin diseases– , . Also, radioactive waters help cope with, including trophic and wounds;
  • vasodilator effect makes baths an excellent addition to the treatment of the cardiovascular system;
  • alpha radiation helps normalize metabolic processes. This action is used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus and other endocrine system disorders;
  • radon baths – the procedure itself is very pleasant It’s not for nothing that resorts are organized around each such source.

Disadvantages of the method:

  • like any therapeutic agent, the use of radon baths is limited;
  • Only a doctor can prescribe the duration of the procedures and the type of bathing and only after a thorough examination. With an excess of alpha radiation, the benefit immediately turns into harm.

Indications for testing

However, pregnant women and mothers during breastfeeding should avoid radon baths: ionizing radiation has a bad effect on the development of the fetus. Children's age is also a direct contraindication. It is allowed to take baths over the age of 5 years with a minimum concentration of no more than 40 nCi/l.

Contraindications

Alpha radiation activates processes occurring in tissues and organs. Hence there are certain limitations of application. In cases where changes need to be stopped and suppressed, irradiation will not be beneficial.

Contraindications include:

This video will tell you how to take radon baths correctly:

How is the procedure performed?

The method of implementation depends on the type of procedure prescribed. There are several various techniques, intended for the treatment of various ailments.

Actually, radon baths lasting 10–20 minutes are taken at least 4–5 times a week. Sessions are distributed depending on the patient’s condition: 2–3 days in a row or with a break of a day. In general, the bathroom temperature reaches 35–37 C, in case of diseases of the cardiovascular system – 35–36 C. In case of illnesses with a pronounced pain syndrome, the concentration of radon can be increased.

When swimming, 0.5% of radon penetrates into the body within 20 minutes, and 2% of the radon contained in the bath and its decay products settle on the skin. They form the so-called active layer - a radon depot, which continues to act for another 2-3 hours after the session. Therefore, after a bath, the skin is not dried with a towel, but dried or even waited until the moisture evaporates naturally.

There are several types of procedure:

  • general baths, that is, with body immersion - non-flowing and flow-through. The latter can only be done at resorts with radon sources;
  • local - chamber fonts;
  • combined - that is, combining hydrocarbon and radon baths, for example;
  • swimming in pools;
  • underwater shower-massage, in this case de-emanated radon water is used.

Radon irrigation

Radon irrigation is popular in the treatment of gynecological diseases. The duration of the session is 15–20 minutes, the water temperature is 35–40 C. The procedure is carried out for 2–3 days in a row, then a break for 1 day. The course consists of 18–20 procedures. A microenema with a temperature of 40 C can be used. There are several types of irrigation:

  • vaginal;
  • rectal;
  • microenemas;
  • suppositories for rectal or vaginal administration;
  • irrigating the nose and mouth - without drinking;
  • head irrigation.

Air-radon baths

Air-radon baths are prescribed for seriously ill patients who have suffered, for example. An air bath does not put any strain on the heart. The procedure is carried out in a special box – “Reabox”, for example. The air temperature is maintained here from 24 to 42 C and high humidity. Radon concentration is 10–40 nCi/L.

There are 3 types of this procedure:

  • are common;
  • local - if only part of the body is treated;
  • steam-radon - with high temperature and humidity.

Other types

  • Radon oil preparations are used for complex treatment degenerative-dystrophic diseases of the joints and spine.
  • Radon-Dunstbad is a procedure carried out only in the resort of Bad Gastein. Steam containing radon comes from the depths of the mine and fills special boxes. Used when balneotherapy is contraindicated.
  • Brachyradium therapy is a method that involves the use of microdoses of radiation, but for a much longer time. In this case, radon has an analgesic, strong tonic and anti-inflammatory effect. Brachyradium therapy is contraindicated in children under 18 years of age.

Consequences and possible complications

Radon acts as a stimulator of processes occurring in the body. This action causes a number of beneficial effects:

  • pain relief – thanks to this property, the procedure is so popular in the treatment of joint diseases that are difficult to treat;
  • wound healing - and trophic ulcers, scars, psoriasis plaques, and so on are also healed;
  • acceleration of metabolic processes - radon increases the sensitivity of cell receptors, which makes the latter act more actively;
  • relaxing effect.

As a rule, baths are well tolerated by patients. However, with individual sensitivity and certain concomitant ailments, side effects may occur:

  • headache, ;
  • blood pressure may increase;

If such symptoms are observed, treatment should be discontinued.

Recovery and care after the procedure

The only one mandatory requirement After bathing there is a natural drying of moisture on the skin or its careful drying. You cannot wipe it off in the usual way: radon remains on the skin after a bath and continues to act.
