Big slugs. Slugs - who are they, where do they come from and what do they look like in the photo? How they harm plants

Slugs are gastropods without shells.. The body has a roll-like shape and is conventionally divided into head, torso and leg. The leg is the lower, muscular part of the body, shaped like a flat sole. There are two pairs of tentacles on the head, with eyes at the end of the longer tentacles. The body is covered with soft, mucous skin; mucus is produced by the skin glands and serves to protect against drying out and the effects of various foreign substances, including chemicals.

In snails, the integument of the body produces a spirally twisted shell. At the top the shell is blindly closed, at the other end there is a hole - the mouth. The diameter of the shell whorls increases with the growth of the animal from the apex to the mouth. In case of danger, the animal completely retracts its body into the shell.

Structure and general information

The oral organs of slugs and snails of the gnawing type are represented by a horny jaw in the form of a bracket with a tongue covered with teeth - a “grater”. The tongue is a muscular roll, covered with a thin cuticle and bearing hard teeth arranged in transverse rows.

Hermaphroditic animals, internal, cross fertilization. They lay up to 400 eggs in groups in various natural shelters - under lumps of soil, at the base of plants, especially in places where weeds grow, under film, boards. The presence of weeds and debris on the site creates favorable conditions for their reproduction. Development is direct. Young slugs and snails are similar to adults, but are smaller in size. The animals are moisture-loving and reproduce in large numbers when there is excess moisture, so they are numerous in rainy summers. In hot, dry weather, adults burrow deep into the soil, and young individuals and eggs die. Crepuscular animals, feed late in the evening or at night; During the day they are found under lumps of soil and various shelters, but in cloudy weather they can be found on plants during the day. The eggs mainly overwinter under lumps of soil. In the spring, young individuals are born and reach sexual maturity within 2–3 months.

Types of slugs and snails

Slugs and snails are divided into three families. The largest representatives of slugs belong to the family Limacides, the length of the body in the straightened state is 40–200 mm. This family includes the fawn or arable slug, reticulated slug, agile slug, and large slug.

In the slug family Arionids body length in the straightened state is 20–70 mm. This includes the following representatives: bordered slug, brown slug, garden slug.

Family helicides or snails. The body of animals in the straightened state has a length of 60–80 mm, and is covered on top with a spirally twisted shell. The shape and color of the shell varies among different species. Before wintering, the outer opening of the shell (mouth) is closed with a lid consisting of two layers. The outer layer is calcareous, the inner layer is made of hardened mucus. The sink may also close when hot, dry weather sets in. This family includes the following representatives: grape snail, garden snail.

What do they eat?

Snails and slugs are polyphagous pests that damage all vegetable crops, but prefer cabbage, cucumber, lettuce, peppers, eggplant, radishes, and parsley. They eat seeds and sprouts, the growing point of young plants, grape leaves, dugout berries, and carrot roots, while eating irregularly shaped holes in the succulent plant tissues. They can damage various parts of ornamental plants, eat flowers of various plant species, and bulbs of gladiolus. The harmfulness increases sharply in rainy or cloudy weather. They are found in closed ground, where they penetrate due to poor insulation of premises or as a result of drift with containers or with the substrate. Various types of cultivated plants are also damaged there.

How to detect

Slugs and snails are detected as follows. On the leaves, in the process of feeding and moving, they leave characteristic traces of dried silver mucus, by which it is easy to distinguish the damage caused by them from damage caused by caterpillars or beetles.

Control measures

The main measure for exterminating slugs and snails is weed control and clearing the area of boards, boxes, old film and debris. These are the main places of accumulation and breeding of slugs.

In small areas, it is practiced to catch slugs under shelters that are placed on the soil surface. Large plant leaves, boards, opaque film, slate, etc. can serve as shelter. It is advisable to moisten the soil under the shelters. Once a day, the shelter must be raised and slugs collected from there, followed by their destruction.

In greenhouses and in individual areas, paths can be sprinkled with iron sulfate (10 g/mg), superphosphate (5–8 g/mg), and tobacco dust. If the number of slugs is high, you can pollinate the soil under the plants with superphosphate (30–40 g/mg), slaked lime (30 g/mg), a mixture of lime and tobacco (20–25 g/mg), sprinkle with a solution of potassium salt - 1 kg per 10 l of water, consumption rate 1 l per 1 mg. This should be done late in the evening, when the slugs crawl out of their shelters.

Among chemical agents, there is the drug Groza G (60 g/kg). Granules of the drug are scattered on the surface of the soil between rows and paths at a rate of 30 g per 10 mg.

Slugs are readily eaten by gray toads, which often settle in garden plots. They are sometimes mistaken for pests.

Recently there have been reports in newspapers and on television that giant slugs have been seen in gardens and in nature. In appearance they do not differ from ordinary ones. But here's the size! When moving, they stretch up to 10-12 and even 15 cm! These "naked snails" are red-brown to dark brown in color and are more visible in the grass. But, oddly enough, they don’t really hide. They creep impressively along the ground in search of tastier greens. Gardeners are concerned with the question: what to expect from such mutants if they multiply greatly.

The giant slug is a relatively new inhabitant of central Russia, having appeared in the Moscow region only in the last few years. It was also seen in other adjacent areas, including the Nizhny Novgorod and Yaroslavl regions. People gave it names: red slug, red slug, Spanish snail... People probably scoured the Internet, which is where the geographical name came from.

Mutants or not?

When you first meet them, these huge creatures cause fear. There was talk among summer residents that giant slugs are mutants of our ordinary slugs, and their size is the result of the use of pesticides. In this regard, horror stories are told about genetic engineering and the consequences of chemical plant protection.

In fact, ecology has nothing to do with it, especially genetic mutants. The large gastropod is a typical example of the introduction of an agricultural pest with vegetables, fruits and seedlings. Essentially, it is a “foreign invader.”

The red roadside slug (Arion rufus) is a species of slug from the Arionidae family.

It reaches a length of 18 cm, although individuals no more than 10 cm are more common. Some sources also mention another species, the Spanish or Lusitanian slug (Arion lusitanicus).

The species are very similar to each other. But which species encroaches on our flowers and beds is not so important. The main thing is that they are more voracious than ordinary slugs, which naturally causes concern.

Initially, red slugs lived in the south of Portugal and Spain (in the territory of the ancient Roman province of Louisiana, from which one of the species got its name). Climate warming, as well as an increase in trade relations with these countries, led to the fact that red slugs, traveling throughout Europe, gradually reached our lands.

How dangerous are they?

In Europe, red slugs have proliferated and are recognized as catastrophic pests. What are our prospects?

In temperate climates, in areas of risky farming, the development of gardening is hampered by frosty winters. The same factor should restrain the proliferation of large slugs.

Our winters cannot be compared with Spanish ones, and the size of European aliens is quite large, so it is more difficult for them to winter than for ordinary slugs. Only those individuals that hid most successfully are preserved. But there are still eggs left.

The egg is a more resilient form of life, and one slug can lay up to hundreds of eggs in one clutch. Babies from eggs grow quickly and actively gain weight.

The diet of Spanish snails is no different from what ours eat, but they need much more food. If our slug just bites into a berry, the giant one will eat it whole!

Our slug treats the plant delicately. In young seedlings, it eats one leaf at a time, while its “big brother” eats the entire plant. Overnight, your lettuce bed will be destroyed if it is attacked by red slugs.

Sometimes we ourselves help pests to multiply. We scare away moles, shrews, snakes and natural enemies of slugs, and at the same time create ideal conditions for wintering compost heaps.

The red slugs are coming. For several years now they have been living in the Moscow region and other regions. Sooner or later, they will appear for you too. Their appetite is brutal. Get ready to defend!

What to do?

First of all, you need to understand that you cannot defeat them with chemical means. Did the chemistry help you a lot against ordinary slugs? How they lived is how they live!

There is such a class of animals - gastropods. Our opponents belong to them. If ordinary snails have a shell, then in slugs it is either underdeveloped or does not have one at all. They lay their eggs in the soil, to a depth of approximately 20 centimeters. The larvae do not immediately come to the surface, and live in the ground for about two weeks. Simply loosening the surface layer of soil can destroy them. At the age of two or three months, slugs mature, and in a year they are capable of raising two generations. These creatures live quite a long time - up to five or seven years. During the winter, they hibernate after burrowing into the soil or fallen leaves. Both larvae and adults feed on plant foods. Most often in dachas you can find a garden or grape snail. The ones that cause the most damage are the black creatures, which reach a length of up to 15 centimeters. Garden slugs are slightly smaller in size - up to 4 cm.

There are no moles - there are slugs. There are no frogs - there are slugs. There are no birds - there are slugs. will help get rid of pests - the use of ash Probably, due to the lack of sufficiently effective devices to prevent dehydration, slugs live only in moist biotopes, such as, for example, the litter of deciduous forests. In the ecosystems existing there, they play a significant role, eating fallen leaves, non-lignified parts of living plants, as well as mushrooms (including those that are poisonous to other organisms). But you can use them in beds by spreading the granules between the plants, but this cannot be done in cellars and other places where vegetables are stored.

A limiting factor in the spread of slugs could be droughts in southern Europe - slugs do not know how to live in a dry climate and quickly die in the absence of moisture. Land reclamation and the transfer of agriculture to technologies using irrigation contributed to the reproduction and comfortable life of slugs. You can, of course, write abstruse articles about the influence of a comet named after an unknown astronomer on the biosphere of the planet, but in fact, we ourselves paved convenient paths for slugs to travel and organized excellent feeding grounds for them.

In our Russian conditions, winter frost can affect the numbers of both Lusitanian and red slugs. Slugs are active only at a certain level of soil moisture - they need water to restore mucus, which is consumed during movement and evaporation. Many species of mollusks have a shell, but in some, such as naked slugs, it is underdeveloped or completely absent. There are two pairs of tentacles on the slugs' head. At the end of one of them there are eyes. The mouthparts of gastropods consist of an unpaired oral jaw and a muscular tongue, the surface of which is covered with rows of small teeth called grater (radula). Using a jaw and a grater, the clams cut, scrape and grind food. This type of mouth organ is called grinding. The wide lower part of the body with which slugs move is called a leg.

Initially, red slugs lived in the south of Portugal and Spain (in the territory of the ancient Roman province of Lusitania, from which one of the species got its name). Apparently, the main food for these gastropods at first was rotting forest litter, but the development of agriculture provided red slugs with much more nourishing and larger “pastures”. Climate warming, as well as an increase in agricultural land, trade relations, globalization and other achievements of human civilization have contributed to the fact that red slugs, traveling throughout Europe, gradually acquired new habitats - preferring to capture vegetable fields, orchards, as well as grain plantings and various there are vineyards there.

Traces of damage left by mollusks are very characteristic: on the leaves there are irregularly rounded holes, and on the fruits and tubers there are wide, shallow pits. In this case, they act with the radula, traces of which are visible on the damage. The field slug usually breeds all summer, laying up to 500 eggs in groups of 20-30 eggs in the ground or under moss. Young slugs hatch from the laid eggs after 2-3 weeks, which become sexually mature after 1.5 months. Thus, the reproduction rate of field slugs is high, but at the same time it depends on external conditions - temperature and humidity. Slugs die off when the temperature rises to 30°C and the humidity drops to 10-15%. Therefore, mass reproduction of slugs occurs in cool and damp summers.

Slugs are quite dangerous pests that can spoil a large number of vegetables, fruits and berries. These mollusks prefer a nocturnal lifestyle, and during the day they hide in dark and cool places. They are quite difficult to detect in sunlight: you will know about their appearance on the site by the characteristic mucus that slugs leave on the ground, leaves and plants.

Varieties of slugs

In nature, there are a large number of varieties of slugs, many of which harm agricultural, fruit and berry crops. Let's look at the most common varieties of these gastropods.

Vegetable (garden)

Garden slugs are also called garden slugs. Their entire body is always covered with mucus, which serves as protection against drying out. The body of the slug is elongated. It can contract due to the work of muscles.

The colors of garden mollusks come in three types:

  • Dirty gray;
  • Yellowish;
  • Light brown.

REFERENCE: This type of mollusk prefers cloudy and rainy weather and is most active at night.

On the slug's tongue there are rows of hard small teeth called graters. On the front of the body there are tentacles about 30 mm long, on which the visual organs of the slug are located.

Increased fertility of slugs is observed in places with high humidity. One adult can lay 300-400 eggs at a time. In winter, the eggs are in the ground, from which young slugs emerge in the spring.

Garden slugs feed on a variety of vegetables and fruits. They give preference to the following plants:

  • Strawberries,
  • Tomatoes;
  • Cabbage;
  • Strawberries.

Slugs leave holes in vegetables and fruits, causing the crop to rot and spoil. The mollusk is also very harmful to plants, eating their leaves and young shoots.

How to get rid of slugs:

Naked

The most common visitor to gardens and vegetable gardens is the naked slug. This species feeds on all plants and fruits. The mollusk is found in almost all European countries.

The naked slug's diet includes more than 160 types of vegetables, fruits and berries.

The body of the mollusk is about 7 cm in length. The body is nondescript in color - gray, brown or dirty white with a yellowish tint.

The presence of a slug is easy to notice by the streaks of mucus it leaves behind as it moves.

Big European

This type of slug is a dangerous pest that destroys various crops. The large European slug reaches a length of 15 cm. The body color of the mollusk is:

  • Gray;
  • Buraya;
  • Light brown.

There are dots and stripes of white or black throughout the slug's body.

The large European slug does not like to change its habitat and rarely moves to different parts of the site.

REFERENCE: The slug settles in greenhouses or damp lowlands, cellars.

Large roadside or leopard

The leopard slug is one of the largest mollusks: its body length can be about 20 cm. The body of a large roadside slug has a round shape. The back of the body is slightly pointed.

The color of the mollusk can be varied: light gray, brown, yellowish and ashen. Black spots and stripes are scattered throughout the slug's body.

The large roadside slug is native to Europe. The largest number of individuals can be found in Northwestern and Central Europe.

Great spotted

The spotted slug is one of the largest representatives of its species. An adult can reach a length of 13 cm. A distinctive feature of the slug is the small dots that cover its mantle. A black stripe also runs across the entire surface of the mantle. The body of the mollusk is oval, rounded at the ends.

The large spotted slug lives in Asia, as well as in southern Europe. The slug loves warmth very much, so in cold areas it settles in greenhouses.

The mollusk feeds on a variety of vegetables, but gives particular preference to mushrooms.

Big black

The mollusk is the world's largest representative of the slug species. The length of an adult reaches 30 cm. The mantle of a black slug is wide, covered with small light spots.

The mollusk lives in Western and Central Europe. It loves warmth, so in the northern regions it lives only in greenhouses.

The black slug feeds mainly on mushrooms, but can also eat vegetables. Due to its large size, the pest is very voracious, and therefore causes enormous damage to the garden. The female lays up to 100 eggs at a time.

Ginger

The size of the red slug varies between 10-18 cm. The color of the slug's body is very bright and varied. It happens:

  • Bright orange;
  • Brick;
  • Yellow;
  • Brown-green.

The mollusk lives in North America, as well as in Central, Eastern and Western Europe. It settles next to humans - in gardens, orchards, greenhouses.

Red roadside

The red roadside slug lives in warm European countries. Another name for the mollusk is Spanish or Louisiana slug. Its homeland is Spain and Portugal.

The size of an adult is 9-11 cm, but can reach 20 cm.

The color of the slug is monochromatic, it can be red, yellow or orange. There are long black antennae on the body.

The red slug is omnivorous - it eats vegetables, fruits, berries and mushrooms. The roadside mollusk is very prolific, with up to 400 eggs in one clutch. Mollusks are hermaphrodites, so even one slug that accidentally appears on the site can breed an entire colony.

IMPORTANT: In many countries, the red slug is listed in the Red Book.

The roadside slug lays eggs in the spring and fall. The young appear after 14 days, and after two months they turn into adults.

Cabbage

The cabbage slug causes great harm to cabbage seedlings. The mollusk reaches 3-4 cm in length. The slug settles in cabbage heads and gnaws many holes in them.

The body is brown-brown in color. There are small spots on the mantle. The head and horns of the mollusk are darker in color.

The slug lives throughout Europe. It feeds mainly on cabbage, but can eat other vegetables and mushrooms.

Field

The field slug grows from 3 to 4 cm in length. Body color varies from light brown to light gray. The body is wide in the middle and narrowed towards the ends.

The field slug lives in damp lowlands, meadows and forest edges. It feeds on plant shoots, leaves and wild berries. Very often, the mollusk moves to gardens and vegetable gardens, where it begins to feed on vegetables and berries.

Smooth

The smooth slug reaches 2.5 cm in length. The body can be black, brown or reddish. The body is cylindrical, slightly narrowed at the ends.

The mollusk loves moisture, so it lives near rivers, lakes, swamps and various bodies of water, as well as in wet meadows. In nature, it feeds on berries, mushrooms and rotten plants.

Forest

An adult can reach a length of 18 cm. The forest slug feeds on berries, plants and mushrooms. The mollusk reaches sexual maturity at a length of 3 cm.

The color of the forest slug is varied: it can vary from white to black. Juveniles are brown. With age, their color changes.

The forest slug lives in many European countries, on the Pacific coast and the British Isles.

In some countries, this mollusk is listed in the Red Book.

Banana

The banana clam is very large - it reaches 25 cm in length. The color of the slug is varied - bright yellow, white or green. There may be dark spots on the back of the mollusk. The eyes are located on the upper horns of the slug, and the lower ones are responsible for the sense of smell. The mollusk is native to North America, but it can also be found on the Pacific coast.

The banana slug feeds on mushrooms, rotten grass and lichens. It can also eat feces of various animals.

A mollusk clutch contains up to 75 eggs.

In winter, when the weather is hot and dry, the banana slug hibernates: it finds a damp, dark place and takes refuge there. To protect against drying out, the mollusk is protected by mucus, which is released abundantly during hibernation.

Redtriangular

This species of slug is native to Eastern Australia. The red triangle slug has a distinct purple or red triangle on its mantle. The body color of the mollusk is varied6a. She may be:

  • Light pink;
  • Milky white;
  • Cream;
  • Olive;
  • Red.

Adult slugs reach 15 cm in length.

Mollusks live in damp forests and shady gardens. In its natural habitat, the red triangle slug feeds on lichens growing on eucalyptus trees.

Orange or brown

A medium-sized slug grows up to 8 cm. The body is brown, dark red or orange and covered with wrinkles. The mollusk is not afraid of the cold, so it lives in all European countries and Russia, including Siberia.

The brown slug lives in forest areas and can live in deciduous and coniferous forests. It feeds on fallen leaves, rotten plants, roots, carrion and mushrooms.

If the site is located next to a forest, the slug can move into the garden and harm cabbage, lettuce, tomatoes and potatoes.

Reticulate

The small slug grows no more than 2-3 cm. It is distinguished by its original coloring - on the beige color there is a pattern of dark stripes in the form of a grid. The mollusk lives in Eastern Europe and can be found in Russia.

The slug lives in meadows, fields, and vegetable gardens. The netted slug is the most dangerous pest because it feeds on almost all vegetables and berries. It causes the greatest harm to cabbage, as it renders the heads of cabbage unusable.

Slugs are not only dangerous pests for gardens. Some exotic mollusks, due to their original appearance, are even pets.

Gray-black slug (lat. Limax cinereoniger) is considered the largest on our planet. The length of its slippery body sometimes reaches 30 cm, which is a record figure for all its relatives. This representative of the order of pulmonary snails is found almost throughout Europe, with the exception of only its northernmost and coldest parts.

The blue-black slug is found in Germany, Great Britain and Ireland, where this species is listed in the Red Book. In addition, it can be seen in the Baltic countries, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova and southern Karelia. It also lives throughout the European part of the Russian Federation, and in the Moscow, Samara, Ulyanovsk, Nizhny Novgorod and Kirov regions it is even under state protection.

This is a very rare species of slugs, which is found only in single specimens. It prefers moist wooded areas and parks with good grass cover. During the day he hides in the hollows of trees, under snags, dead wood and stones, and at night he crawls out of hiding to snack on something tasty, from his point of view, of course. He eats green parts of plants very reluctantly: he would like some kind of lichen or a piece of moss, or even better, a larger fungus.

That is why the biggest enemies of gray-black slugs can be considered insidious mushroom pickers who do not leave the poor fellows their favorite delicacy. And then there is deforestation and, as a consequence, a reduction in the number of mosses and lichens, which actually dooms slugs to starvation. Unfortunately, no protective measures are being taken to preserve the number of slugs. And in vain, because these hard workers are one of the most valuable forest biotopes, although they develop a speed of only a couple of centimeters per hour.

And they look so handsome! They have a slender, tapering, mobile body with rough and durable wrinkled skin, which is somewhat reminiscent of the scaly cover of a snake. Despite the name, representatives of the species can have a wide variety of colors - among them there are even white individuals. Juveniles are easily recognized by their brown color, which may remain or change to any other color over time. The mucus of individuals of any age is transparent or light yellow.

The bluish-black slug's mantle is one-color, its length covers two-fifths of the body. It is all dotted with concentric wrinkles, and its anterior edge does not grow to the back. There are black dots on the tentacles. The breathing hole is located at the back of the right half of the mantle.

In the first year after birth, gray-black slugs grow quickly, but do not leave offspring. In the second year, they lay eggs diligently in early and mid-summer, the entire process taking about two months. Like all lung snails, they are hermaphrodites, but they still prefer to find a partner for mating.

To do this, a snail ready for reproduction follows the trail of an individual of its species, which signals its readiness with the help of a special secretion secreted into the mucus. It is interesting that before the action itself there is usually a love game, during which the partners excite and encourage each other. Tears do not have a larval stage and a ready-made individual emerges from the laid egg, which differs from the adult only in its size. Her life expectancy will be about three years.
