General recommendations for decorating walls with fabric. Ways of decorating walls with fabric: how to make an interior original Creating a fabric drapery

Decorating walls with carpets and fabrics began many centuries ago. In the east, the tradition has survived to this day, instead of partitions, to hang tapestry or paint the walls and paint them with gilding to imitate expensive embroidered material.

Wall draperies with fabrics adorned palaces in Greece and Rome. Even when the first paper tapestries appeared, the living room interior looked more luxurious with drapery with expensive fabrics. The wallpaper was pasted by people with low income, nobility and wealthy merchants preferred to drape the walls of the house with fabric.

Wall decoration methods with canvas

For a long time, upholstery of walls with fabric was an expensive pleasure available to few. Gradually, the quality of the fabric has changed, relatively inexpensive textiles have appeared that meet the modern requirements of the interior. Kirill was interested in the handsome wall material suitable for any style and turns into decor. Now my assistant wanted to know how to decorate the walls with cloth with his own hands. There are several technologies for finishing fabric on walls instead of wallpaper:

  • Drapery.
  • Wallpaper.
  • Seamless gluing under the rail.
  • Finishing with frames and frames.

By analogy with the walls, it is done stretch ceiling... The material must be prepared to size, create a pattern, wet and pull on the prepared frame, attach with clips around the perimeter and glue it with moldings or ceiling plinths. Cloth wall decoration is better than paint:

  • Luxurious and unique view interior.
  • Suitable for any style.
  • Enhances the sound-absorbing effect of the walls.
  • Keeps you warm.
  • Quick change of drapery, washable.
  • It is not necessary to level the walls and eliminate minor defects.
  • You can quickly paste over a room without a single joint.

There are drawbacks, for example, the kitchen, with its dampness and odors, is not suitable to paste over with absorbent material. Lining is possible in the dining area, but it is desirable that it be leather or upholstery, impregnated protective compounds... Textured and loose material retains dust on its surface, absorbs dirt and moisture.

Drapery - elegant walls of banquet halls

Decorating with soft falling waves is used in halls for celebrations and banquets, in living rooms, in preparation for the holiday. The photo shows the fabric decor, which can be replaced quickly, step by step repeating simple steps with the ready-made material. The fabric needs to be prepared:

  1. Sew a solid canvas, wider than the wall, since the trim should hang in waves.
  2. Hem top and bottom, keeping the height of the partition.
  3. Starch and smooth.
  4. Secure to a plank or bamboo curtain rod.

The advantage of this method is that you can quickly revet the walls, give the hall a decorative and festive look. Then for a short time change the style and theme, decorate the room for the next celebration. The decoration does not need to be glued, it is enough to temporarily hang a soft draped material.

The advantage of drapery is the ability to quickly change the design, wash the fabric, alternately use any finishing option, inexpensively creating a stylish and elegant look. This option did not work for me and Kirill, since we are doing overhaul residential houses and apartments.

Pasting with stripes according to the type of wallpaper

Instead of paper wallpaper strips of fabric are glued to the wall. The texture is selected to be dense. The technology is partially different from the method of pasting with a roll finishing material. We had to stick the fabric with a luxurious pattern in the living room with our own hands.

Before finishing, it is recommended to check a piece of fabric for shrinkage. I prefer to soak all the fabric that is used for finishing. Industrial dust, oil from equipment is washed out from it. At the same time, I dissolve the salt in water, fix the paint, brighten the color of the fabric base, and make the material non-combustible. The texture of the fabric is denser. Now it adheres better to the wall and attracts less dust. I had a large work table on which the fabric was flattened before cutting. The stripes are narrow, so they were glued like regular wallpaper.

  1. Cut into pieces with a length allowance. Checked the coincidence of the picture.
  2. They smeared glue on the wall, and starting from the top they fixed the panel.

The top edge can be secured with studs, then trimmed with lace or fringe.

Seamless pasting and the complexity of its implementation

The height of the nursery wall made it possible to stick the fabric across. We made a seamless wall covering.

  • We prepared the fabric, soaked it with salt and smoothed it well, rolled it into a roll facing inward.
  • Starting from the corner, they smeared the surface of the wall with casein glue, Special attention giving to the perimeter.

  • We fixed the left end. Kirill unfolded the cloth and straightened it, I ironed it with a hot iron, melting and fixing the glue.
  • A hole was cut in the place of the switch, but when we reached the opening, the fabric was cut in fact.

It is difficult for me alone to cover the walls and smooth them out. We dealt with the nephew quickly. But I already have experience, and several times I trimmed the walls with fabric in this way.

Covering on and under the rail

Next in line was the bedroom. We used a seamless method, fixing the rayon wallpaper to the walls under the plank. The width of the panel made it possible to cover the entire wall. I prepared the fabric and, with the help of my nephew, wound it into a roll. Then we followed the instructions.

The procedure can be seen in the video.

  1. Secured the upper left corner of the fabric with a nail.
  2. With the help of Cyril, he pulled the cloth at the top along the marked horizontal line and secured the right corner. The wall is long, so for convenience I hammered a nail in the center so that it sags less. I usually don't do this on short flights.
  3. The two of us were cramped, but comfortable. I tucked the fabric under the bar, Kirill tightened the screws. I made the sweat in advance, at a distance of 15 cm. We moved as usual from left to right.
  4. Having finished at the top, we went down. We pulled and fixed the corners, then screwed on the bar.
  5. The corners were made simultaneously with the adjacent wall, securing 2 panels with one bar. There is no need to glue the textile material, just pull it evenly.

To close the rail, you can glue a cloth border, glue moldings or decorate with braid, lace, paint. The idea of finishing can be any. The main thing is to do it carefully and in accordance with the style of the interior. In place of the outlet and the switch, I cut through the fabric, made a hole with a 2 cm allowance on the side and fixed it around the perimeter with the same rail as the entire panel. In the office, silence is needed for work, so the fabric was attached to a rail, a thin layer of foam rubber was laid.

  1. Marked by level and plumb line and attached a rack frame.
  2. Then they began to cut and glue the foam rubber on the wall.
  3. They began to tighten up from above, by analogy with fastening under the rail.

You can pre-glue the size of the frame from the slats and sheathe them with fabric. The insulating backing is inserted into the frames. Sheathing is done imperceptibly with studs on the back. Ready-made sections are mounted on the walls with glue. It remains to mask the frame joints.

Advice! The frame cladding method is convenient if you need to frequently replace the cladding with another one. Or renew in places where the surface is quickly wiped and smeared, for example, in hallways and corridors.

Warming with foam rubber

A beautiful finish is obtained by creating an embossed surface. The backing is installed on the frame. A thick layer of foam rubber is attached to it. Everything is covered with fabric. The fabric is cut out with an allowance of 10 - 15 cm. It is fixed with a stapler with back side... Then, on the convex surface, according to the markings, a fabric with foam rubber is pushed to the base, a notch is obtained. Fragmentary decoration perfectly decorates the walls at the head of the bed, zoning soft corners in the living room.

When developing an exquisite and unique design, as a rule, the most original materials and technology. One of beautiful finishes the walls are covered with fabric.

This method interior design was invented a long time ago, but in last years became popular again thanks to the use of innovative techniques and materials. An atypical approach has an overwhelming effect after evaluating the result. It is quite possible to do the work yourself, if you take into account all the nuances and recommendations of specialists.

Advantages and disadvantages of fabric wall decoration

For most people, wall decoration with fabric seems to be a novelty, although this method of decorating the interior surfaces of a room was successful in past centuries. Modern materials are distinguished by high wear resistance, a large selection of colors and thematic images. Among the main advantages of fabric wall decoration:

Exclusive design;

Additional sound insulation;

The surface does not require special preparation;

Special comfort in the room;

The material is more protected from mechanical damage than wallpaper;

the ability to choose a single theme for the design of walls, furniture, textiles;

Simple fastening;

Large selection of colors;

The decoration allows the walls to breathe;

Environmental friendliness.

Of the shortcomings, the cost of the material stands out. High-quality fabric, impregnated with a special water-repellent compound, is not cheap. There are also inconveniences associated with the installation of sockets and switches.

A plus on the one hand and a minus on the other is the ability to clean stained areas with a cleaning solution. In this way, remove not only dirt, but also the brightness of the colors. And repeated cleaning will lead to a quick loss of the presentable look of the finish.

The choice of material for wall decoration with fabric

In principle, any textile can be used for wall decoration, but not every fabric is durable and easy to care for. Therefore, experts recommend making a purchase taking into account the following criteria.

A special fabric intended for finishing works, almost all of them are prepared for use and do not require additional processing... The only drawback is the cost, since the production process includes more stages than conventional textiles.

Furniture fabrics that have a water-repellent surface are suitable. In terms of its properties, the material is similar to the finishing material.

Preference should be given to an elastic and durable weave that can withstand repeated cleaning.

Fiberglass based material is not recommended. In addition to a longer preservation of the brightness of colors, such a fabric has no advantages. Unlikely synthetic covering will be able to provide the appropriate level of comfort and warmth in the room.

Looks very nice and relevant decorative trim based on natural raw materials: linen, cotton, wool. This kind the decor of the room is displayed in several styles at once used for interior decoration: rustic, provence, eco-style, ethnic.

The selection of textiles is carried out taking into account the method of fastening. For draperies, deep pleats and complex shapes it is recommended to give preference to light silky fabrics. To simulate textured plaster dense fabrics with a geometric weaving pattern are more suitable.

Features of wall decoration with textiles

The properties of the selected material and the surface condition determine how the fabric is attached. Before performing work, the fabric is checked for shrinkage and shedding. This must be done first of all in order to avoid unpleasant surprises.

1. Pasting is more like wallpapering, but the selected pattern and texture are immediately erected decoration walls in the category of respectable and refined. The surface before pasting is carefully prepared so that flaws are not visible through the canvas. A layer of plaster is trowelled with a mesh to remove granular fragments. To increase the adhesion of two dissimilar surfaces, the walls are treated with a primer. The fabric is laid on the wall with adhesive only applied to the edges. More often the fabric is pre-stitched and fixed whole piece... This will avoid overhead joints and displacement of the pattern. If the selected textiles are heavy, it is recommended to fill over it with wooden slats, which are dismantled after the glue has completely dried. Smooth the fixed fabric with a rubber roller.

Cloth wall decoration can be done in four ways: by pulling on the material, gluing, upholstery and by draping surfaces. Any of them improves sound insulation, allows you to hide wall defects and helps to retain heat in the room.

Any fabric can be used as a finishing material for walls, but it is desirable that it be dense enough. Synthetic fabrics have proven their worth - they are durable, easy to work with and do not require special care.

Another possible variant- fabrics used for upholstery. They are durable, resistant to mechanical damage, moisture resistant. For drapery, you will need a lightweight and well-shaped material.

You can choose the material and finishing method by first examining the photos of various interiors using this technique.

It is important to remember that if indoors high humidity, this method of wall decoration will not work.

Stretching the fabric

The technology of wall decoration with fabric is quite simple.
You will need:

  • wooden slats;
  • dowels and screws;
  • construction level (hydro level);
  • nails and hammer;
  • tape measure, pencil;
  • screwdriver.

A free space is formed between the wall and the stretched textile, equal to the height of the used rail. If necessary, insulation or soundproofing material can be laid in this air pocket. To fix the material, special glue is used, while the joints are carefully sealed so that it does not leak onto the fabric.

When choosing a material, the properties of textiles are taken into account - for light ones, they choose insulation of the same color, the dark one will shine through.

Progress

Along the entire perimeter of the room, draw lines for mounting the rail using a pencil, tape measure and a building level. The lines should be located at the same height from the floor and ceiling, while the distance between them should also be maintained so that the fixed fabric is stretched evenly, there are no distortions.

With the help of dowels and self-tapping screws, wooden slats are fixed on the marked line.

For further actions, two pairs of hands are required. The fabric must be pulled evenly and firmly. In the places of attachment to the rails, it is tucked twice to prevent the appearance of breaks. It is nailed with the help of small nails, a piece of leather is preliminarily placed under each. Another possible way fixation - on furniture staples.

At the final stage, the places where textiles are attached to the slats are covered with plinths or decorative strips.

Gluing fabric

Gluing is the most popular, but rather laborious process.

Surface preparation

Before you start decorating the walls with a cloth with your own hands, you need to prepare the surfaces.

This will require:

  • putty knife;
  • plaster;
  • paper or newspapers;
  • sandpaper;
  • nitro varnish (for stains on the walls, if any).

Operating procedure:

1. Use a spatula to clean the wall surface.
2. All irregularities and grooves are sealed with plaster mortar. They wait until it is completely dry.
3. The entire surface of the wall is covered with paper or newspapers. When the glue is dry, sand the wall using sandpaper.
4. If after all these operations there are stains on the wall, they are treated with nitro varnish so that they do not appear on the fabric.

Preparing the fabric

Unlike wallpaper, textiles are glued to the wall not in cuts, but in a single piece. It is advisable to choose the widest possible cut so that there are as few joints as possible. If this is not possible, then the wall is measured, the strips of material are sewn together, leaving a margin at the top and bottom. The seams are ironed from the seamy side, the finished cut is rolled up.

The material is tested for shrinkage - a small flap is measured, immersed in water and then dried. Measure again, and if its dimensions are reduced, then the entire cut prepared for work is soaked, dried and ironed.

Operating procedure

Furniture glue can be applied to the entire wall surface at once, others adhesives applied at intervals, to separate areas, so that it does not have time to dry out.

Work begins from the upper section of the wall. The fabric is applied and pulled. This operation will require 2 people - one will hold the roll, the second will glue finishing material and carefully smooth it with a roller so that it lies evenly and tightly.

The fabric is temporarily fixed with small studs. Align and at the same time secure by ironing with an iron, leading the device from top to bottom. When heated, the glue will solidify, fixing the textiles securely to the wall. It is required to iron the entire surface of the wall several times so that there are no missing areas.

When the work is over, the excess linen on the ceiling and near the floor is carefully cut off, taking care not to fray the edge of the material. Places of cuts are additionally coated with glue.

The process of complete solidification of the glue takes about 3 days. After this period, the fabric is carefully inspected, if air bubbles are visible on the surface, they are carefully pierced and ironed with an iron.

The final stage is the decoration of the edges with molding, plinth or baguette.

Drapery

Drape walls with fabric will require the involvement of an assistant.

For finishing, you will need a large canvas, the width of which is significantly greater than the perimeter of the room - this is necessary to create folds.

The work does not imply fixing the fabric over the entire surface of the wall, most often the textiles are fixed on a strip located at the ceiling, and below it falls freely.

Materials and tools that will be required for drapery:

Preparing the walls

Before draping the wall with textiles, the surface of the wall is cleaned with a spatula, wiped with a damp cloth to remove dust. Large and small cracks are covered with plaster. After the solution has dried, they are passed over the surface with sandpaper, then dust is removed again.

Preparing the fabric

In order for the material to lie in even, identical folds around the entire perimeter of the room, you need to prepare it. The easiest way is to mark the folds with pins, and then sew the entire length along the top edge. In this case, you get a ready-to-work canvas with already made folds. It is much more difficult to form them at the stage of nailing the fabric to the wall, and the end result may not satisfy.

Operating procedure

Using a level, a line is drawn along the entire perimeter of the room on which the rail will be installed.

The canvas is folded along the edge, fixed along the outlined line with the help of studs. On top of the fixed textiles, the slats are fixed with self-tapping screws and a screwdriver. Fasteners are placed no further than 30 cm from each other.

After mounting the slats around the entire perimeter of the room, they proceed to fixing the fabric from below. To understand all the subtleties of the work, it is recommended to watch a video in which the process is filmed in detail.

Upholstery

To upholster the walls with cloth carriage coupler, you will first need to install a special frame. It will not be easy to cope with the task on your own, but if you wish, you can do this too.

For upholstery, you will need a dense and durable fabric that is breathable and resistant to sunlight.

You will also need to create a sketch with which you can calculate the amount of material and fastening ties. The width of the cut should be greater than the height of the wall (by about 10 cm). The screed can be made in the form of squares or rhombuses, a specific pattern is achieved by the location of the fastening strips (vertically or diagonally).

The fastener itself can be made of the same fabric as the upholstery, or it can be contrasting.

Operating procedure:

  1. The surface of the wall is pasted over with heat and sound insulation. The degree of relief of the finished finish will depend on the thickness of the layer - the larger the layer, the more spectacular the walls will look.
  2. The textile material is marked along the entire length (marks are made in which the fabric will be fixed with nails to the wall). Errors during work must not be allowed - every puncture will be noticeable, it cannot be removed.
  3. An assistant is used for work. The upper edge of the canvas is glued along the ceiling. Nails are driven into the marked places, acting from top to bottom, placing the material evenly, making sure that there are no distortions.

Upholstery or wall covering with cloth - spectacular way finishing the premises. Using this method, it is easy to mask the flaws in the walls and communications. However, it is worth remembering that a large amount of dust accumulates on the textile surface, so you need to take care of it regularly: vacuum and remove stains in a timely manner.

Cloth wall decoration looks quite unusual. It gives the room a very attractive and rich look. Not all textiles can be used for this finish.

What is the fabric decoration of the room

Cloth wall decoration is surface draping, which is quite simple and quick. This surface design can be used not only on walls, but also on ceilings. For this reason, firms that produce fabric stretch ceilings began to appear at an enviable speed.

On the surface of the walls, the principle of fabric installation is carried out in almost the same way. The fabric has become popular in finishing works long ago. Only here you need to choose the right type of textiles (see Wall finishing options).

Advice. Cloth wall decoration can be done in any room except the kitchen. The fabric is highly susceptible to odors. She absorbs them very well.

Features of fabric wall design

The main advantage of fabric finishing will be that it has an attractive appearance and a large assortment of textiles offered by the online store of home textiles "Shuhlyadka" for such works. It is impossible to call the fabric on the wall practical, since it can freely absorb not only odors, but also dirt.

Advice. It is best to mount the fabric on the wall surface in such a way that it can be easily dismantled for cleaning.

Only natural textiles are used for work and are very popular:

  • Velvet.
  • Viscose.
  • Jeans and other material.

Material characteristics:

  • These fabrics have a dense structure and are resistant to physical influences. You can stretch them freely and not worry about their deformation.

Advice. You can use special fabrics for such work, which are made using special means that increase the elasticity of textiles. Thanks to this, the fabric lends itself very well to processing and impact.

  • The price for this type of registration may vary. It all depends on what quality and type of fabric is chosen for the work.
  • This type of finish is environmentally friendly. It allows air to pass freely and perfectly absorbs moisture. For this reason, it is not recommended to use fabric for finishing. wet rooms... The finish from this will lose its properties and appearance.

Advice. Only dense fabrics are used for fabric finishing. Due to their structure, they are less susceptible to this type of influence.

Methods for mounting fabric on a surface

All work on the installation of fabric finishing can be done by hand.

To do this, there are two ways of fixing on the surface of the textile:

  • With wooden slats.
  • With glue.

Both that and that method are good in their own way. The first one implies a longer and more laborious process of assembling the material, the second one is faster and less costly.

Advice. To avoid defects in the finishing of fabrics, the surface is prepared before work.

Preparing the surface for fabric mounting

The technology for preparing the surface for the installation of textiles on it is quite simple. It provides not only for cleaning the surface, but also when installing fabric on wooden slats - making a frame.

Stages of work:

  • When cleaning the surface, it is imperative to remove the old layers of paint from it if they have already lost their properties. Plaster is subjected to the same actions.

Advice. If there are layers of plaster on the surface that have moved away from the surface, then they must be removed, since if they break off, they can cause deformation of the fabric finish.

  • How to identify plaster that does not adhere as firmly to the surface? Everything is very simple. You can use a rubber hammer for this, which is tapped completely over the entire surface for finishing. Also, all this is done by hand. Thus, it will be much easier to identify voids on the surface.

Advice. If there are wall elements on the surface that have visible spalls, then they must be covered with plaster.

  • The next step is to wash out the surface. For this, simple detergents or cleaning agents are used. The surface should dry well after such work.
  • You should also pay special attention to the presence of rust or mold. You also need to get rid of them, and use for this special means or vinegar solution with added chlorine.
  • How can you get rid of mold? In such works, one cannot do without iron brushes, with which the layer of such a disease is removed from the surface. Then the entire surface is treated with a special antifungal agent.

Advice. Before sheathing the walls with fabric, you must carefully level the surface.

Let's take a closer look:

  • For this type of work, drywall or plaster is used. The most fast way is the use of gypsum cardboard. It mounts securely to metal profile frame using self-tapping screws.
  • It will be necessary to process the joints of the sheets of material with putty, since they will be very noticeable when gluing.
  • The use of plaster allows you to avoid such additional surface treatment, only here the process of work is rather complicated and lengthy.

It involves the use of several types of funds:

  • "Start".
  • "The finish".

The first plaster is applied to the surface. For this, a spatula is used. different sizes... After complete drying, all layers are processed with sandpaper.

Then the finishing plaster is applied to the starting layer. Its main function will be to mask the defects of the starting layer. After complete drying, it is also processed with sandpaper.

Advice. In order to prepare a high-quality plaster solution, instructions are applied. It is through it that liquid is added to the free-flowing powder of the agent in a certain amount.

Defects in the finish of the fabric may appear if the surface plastering is not done well.

Fastening to the surface of the fabric with wooden slats

For fabric finishing with slats, the following is used:

  • Roulette and pencil.
  • Dowels and screws.
  • Perforators and screwdriver.

There is a specific instruction according to which wooden slats are mounted on the surface at the bottom and top of the room. For this, dowels are used. They are able to securely fix the slats to the wall. Some elements are connected with self-tapping screws.

The fabric is attached to the slats initially from the top and with good stretching. In this case, the pattern on the textile should not be deformed. Then the fabric is stretched from top to bottom and not completely of the entire canvas, but in some parts of it.

Mounting the fabric with glue on the wall surface

For such work, only dense fabrics are used and it is better to glue the textiles with non-woven fabric in the attachment points.

You will need:

  • Scissors for cutting fabric.
  • Building level for level material installation.
  • Special glue.

Advice. To speed up the process of gluing the fabric to the wall surface, you can choose a width that would correspond to the height of the room.

Glue is applied to the surface. You need to give it a little time to soak into the surface. The fabric is glued from one of the corners from top to bottom. At the same time, it is not strongly recommended to stretch it. After the glue dries, deformations of the pattern or other design will remain on the surface of the textile.

Advice. So that the fabric is not colored during the cutting process, it is treated with glue or wax before such work.

How to finish fabric surface designs:

  • Typically, wall hangings require finishing at the bottom and top.
  • Above the rooms under the ceiling itself are used ceiling skirting boards from foam, plastic or wood.
  • On the floor surface, plinths made of plastic or wood are also used.

The most important thing is to choose the right color range such a design. It is recommended to watch an instructional video on how to install a fabric covering on walls.

A bit of history
The chambers of Indian nobles were decorated with fabrics as early as the 3rd century BC. V Ancient Greece draperies were used with fabrics for walls, windows and beds. They originally performed protective function, but with the advent of dyes for fabrics and the creation of the simplest patterns on them, wall decoration with fabrics began to play an aesthetic role. The art of interior drapery came to Europe only in the 15th century. At the beginning, the windows were curtained with fabrics, but over time, exquisite Burgundy and Flemish tapestries of extraordinary beauty gained immense popularity. Later appeared different styles decor with the fabric of the room.

Byzantine- this method uses both thin, flowing and soft fabrics, and heavy, nap, with a complex ornament.
Romanesque- it is characterized by the use of woolen fabrics, as well as silk, cotton and taffeta. The canvases contain geometric patterns or ornaments of the heraldic type.

Russian style draperies are characterized by the use of various fabrics to decorate all objects in the house: walls, tables, chests, windows, doors.

Fabric decoration methods
There are several ways to decorate walls in an interior. Walls can be decorated with fabrics along the perimeter, in fragments or only on one wall.
Cloth upholstery
With this method, the preparation and leveling of the walls is not carried out, since the textiles will be fixed only along the edges of the wall.

Wall drapery
In this method, textiles are used in the form of conventional curtains along blind partitions and walls. You can also imitate light draperies, create lush multi-tiered designs, or apply the principle of Japanese curtains.

Sticking fabric on the wall
This method is similar to wallpapering the walls. For this method, only lightweight fabrics, such as tulle, are used. The surface of the walls must first be leveled.

Finishing part of the wall with fabric
Fabrics, like wallpaper, can be used to trim only a part of the wall, creating a color contrast or accent on a specific place on the wall. Such fragments can be framed with wooden planks, or molding. Such fragments can imitate art panels or paintings.
