Patterns of carved window frames. Platbands for plastic windows: decoration of windows with plastic platbands Beautiful carved platbands for windows

Plating windows is an ancient practice. Wood carving - at one time, was one of the most demanded professions, and now it has moved into the category of applied art.

Our ancestors believed that evil spirits can enter the house through window and doorways. Therefore, the platband served not only as a decorative element, but also as a talisman, and each applied ornament and pattern on the carved platband carried a certain message. Moreover, each region had its own traditions.

The meaning of the carved elements on the platbands is interesting

  • The wings emphasize strength.
  • A bird is an element that unites all times in itself.
  • The sun represents life and energy (usually located on the kokoshnik).
  • The snake symbolizes wisdom and fertility.
  • The cross demonstrates the desire of the owners for harmony between the material and the spiritual.
  • Vegetation shows a sense of unity with nature.
  • Earrings testify to the hospitality of the owners of the house.

Symbols on carved window frames

Wooden platbands are rarely found in cities with multi-storey buildings. But in private construction, they are again in demand today, making modern houses more stylish and unique. They emphasize the desire of many to revive traditions in decor.

Nowadays, window frames perform a completely different function and are not only made of wood. Platbands made of metal, plastic (PVC), plywood, and laminated MDF are widespread. As for the latter, platbands made of MDF or plywood are not intended for external framing of windows, only for interior decoration of door and window openings.

It should be noted that the correct name for the external decorative framing of windows is cashing. The platband is installed indoors.

Advantages

  • decoration of window openings. For example, a platband can visually stretch a low house, or widen a narrow one;
  • the opportunity to express your individuality or give your home the style of a particular era or region;
  • emphasize the style of the house and allow you to combine all buildings on the site into a single architectural ensemble;
  • protection of cracks between the window and the wall from dust and moisture;
  • reduction of heat loss at the junction of the window frame and wall;
  • reducing the level of external noise;
  • sometimes they are the only possible design option. For example, platbands on the windows of a wooden house or log house can only be wooden. Otherwise, the whole flavor of such a structure will be lost.

disadvantages

Wooden, especially carved, platband has a number of disadvantages, or rather, features:

  • dependence on atmospheric influences. Frequent temperature changes, moisture, ultraviolet light, all these factors damage the platband;
  • dependence on quality processing. The correct choice of species, thorough impregnation of wood, timely replacement of parts, and painting, all this can extend the service life of the product. Otherwise, the wooden platband will soon become unusable;
  • the complexity of combining with modern plastic windows. Wooden platbands are not always suitable for plastic windows.

Plastic windows with wooden platbands Quite often there are plastic windows framed with wooden platbands, as shown in the photo above. A somewhat unfortunate, controversial decision. In such cases, you need to either install wooden double-glazed windows (or laminated wood-like windows), or paint the casing white.

A more harmonious finish is shown in the photo below.

Types and types of platbands for windows

The production of platbands for windows depends on the type and method of installation of the platband.

Allocate simple platbands for windows - flat and standard. More beautiful ones are made on special equipment. The most beautiful window frames are, of course, carved.

The method of manufacturing and the cost of the platband is influenced by the way they are installed:

  • telescopic. To a greater extent, they will change in the frame of doorways. Special L-shaped protrusions of such a casing fit into the grooves of the box. Such a connection is more complex, but beautiful;
  • waybills. Attached to the window frame with nails or special glue.

It should be noted that platbands are of a wide variety and are often complemented by shutters.

How to make window trims - choice of material

1. Wood species

It is better to use wood such as beech, oak, birch, linden, alder, pine, walnut, or even fruit trees for making the platband.

The choice of the breed will be influenced by the intended method of making the platband.

  • Platbands made of hardwood (beech, oak, ash) are very reliable, but this material is very hard. It takes a lot of effort and time to cut a pattern on them.
  • Platbands of soft-leaved species (linden, alder, aspen). Soft wood material, it is a pleasure to work with it. But, if improperly processed, they absorb moisture and quickly deteriorate.
  • The best option is deciduous (birch) or coniferous (pine) wood. Hard enough to be used outdoors, they enable neat cuts.
  • The cherry or apple tree is used to make small decorations that are superimposed on the main pattern.

2. Patterns for platbands on windows - drawings and templates

If decorative carving is supposed, you need to decide on the pattern. Depending on your skills, you can choose a light or very complex ornament for the platbands. Below are some drawings of carved window frames. Templates can be copied in whole or in part, adding something of your own to the pattern.

Sketches with interesting ornaments and patterns are placed on a separate page, by going to which you can
download free templates of carved platbands on the windows.
It also describes how to make stencils for making templates with your own hands.

It is desirable that all windows are decorated with the same platbands with the same thread. Therefore, when choosing a pattern, keep in mind that it will need to be repeated several times. It shouldn't be too pretentious. Especially if you are a beginner. It is better if your pattern contains round holes (they are easy to drill) and large elements. It is worth noting that small elements are not only difficult to manufacture, but also deteriorate faster than others. Therefore, they will require periodic replacement.

Another important point is the mandatory presence of a slope at the top of the platband. Otherwise, snow will accumulate on the surface of the tree, which will inevitably lead to its destruction. A slope of several degrees is easy to perform, it will drain water downward.

3. Tool

  • hacksaw;
  • knives;
  • chisels of several types (cranberries, corners, flat, curved, semicircular, caesarics);
  • sanding paper;
  • jigsaw;
  • drill;
  • milling machine (if available)

4. Patterns for platbands - stencils and sketches

Carved platbands - sketches To make the pattern the same on all windows, it is recommended to make a sketch or stencil.

Carved platbands - the location of the pattern on the workpiece You need to place the drawing on the workpiece correctly. The elements should be located along the grain of the wood. This will prevent cracking of the threads.

Areas of the pattern where you want to make cuts can be marked with color.

5. Making carved window frames

There are two ways to make wood carvings:

  • slotted wood carving. The pattern is cut through the entire casing and it, like lace, beautifully and exquisitely frames the window opening.

Carved platbands - carved woodcarving

  • overhead woodcarving. This method is much easier in that a thinner workpiece is used for work, which is easier to work with. In the overhead method, individual thread elements are created, which are then folded together on a solid board. Thus, you can refine simple window trims.

Carved platbands - overlaid wood carving

The beauty of the openwork trim on the windows lies in the use of contrast. A lighter carved element on a dark background is more common.

Do-it-yourself wooden platbands on windows - instructions

  • measurements are taken from the window;
  • all work is performed on dry lumber. The height and width of the board depends on your preferences, but the thickness should be at least 30 mm for the slotted thread and at least 10 mm for the invoice;
  • blanks are cut;
  • from the inside of the clypeus, to a depth of 1-2 mm. wood is selected. Edges are left around the edges. This approach will provide a tighter fit of the casing to the frame;
  • the pattern applied to the template is cut out. At the same time, the holes can be drilled with drills of different diameters, and the slots can be made with a jigsaw. The entry point for the jigsaw is indicated by the drilled hole. This will make the cut more beautiful;
  • slots and holes are processed with sanding paper. If there are blind holes in the pattern, then wood dust must be removed from them. This is done using a vacuum cleaner.

6. Fastening of carved elements

Details made with an overhead thread are attached to the wide base of the platband with nails. It is desirable that the nails be without heads. A more secure connection can be achieved by applying glue to the pattern from the wrong side. Masters advise not to use self-tapping screws for the connection, so as not to damage the connection.

7. Installation of platbands on windows

It is not enough to create a beautiful product. You also need to know how to install window frames correctly.

Correct installation of platbands on windows is a guarantee of their long-term operation and aesthetic appearance. For fastening, you can use the following methods:

  • deaf thorn. Such spikes are installed in the casing, and holes are drilled in the frame for them. A little glue is applied to the spike and inserted into the groove. This mount is the most difficult, but it protects the installation site from moisture and does not spoil the appearance of the product;
  • through thorn. An easier and less reliable way. It is this spike system that provides fastening. But, the spike must be installed where it will be least noticeable and additionally protected from moisture.

The listed methods are used if platbands are installed on wooden windows.

In the event that the installation of platbands on plastic windows is required, special glue (liquid nails) is used. This method will allow you not to violate the integrity of the frame.

8. Protective treatment of wooden platbands

In order for the carved platband to please you as long as possible, you need to take care of its processing. To do this, the wood is primed, varnished or painted.

Outcome

The desire to follow the traditions of the ancestors is commendable. The revival of carved art comes in handy in the conditions of modern urbanization. The special flavor of Russian carving will not lose its relevance. With some effort, you can make carved wooden platbands with your own hands. Yes, the work is difficult and painstaking, but it's worth it. Plus, you can save a decent amount because if you order the production of a set of carved platbands for one window in the workshop, it will cost 5-15 thousand rubles.

Decorating the front of a house is an important step. Since ancient times, people have tried to make the face of the house unique, covering the space near the door and windows with intricate carvings. Our ancestors attached sacred meaning to each turn made and hoped that these golden laces would protect the home from the penetration of dark forces. The fashion for antiquity leads to the fact that today ancient traditions are in demand again. This article will focus on how to make platbands for windows with your own hands.

Project

Any business should start with a project. First, the facade of the building is drawn, taking into account all the details available in reality. Then you need to make a drawing of carved platbands on the windows. You can also use the drawings and diagrams presented on the site.

Using the visualization program, if there is one, you can make a 3D project at home. He will show everything in the complex, will allow you to assess how appropriate the wooden window frames you like are.

When the project documentation is ready, a set of tools is prepared that will be useful for the upcoming work.

  • screwdriver;
  • wood drill bit (12 mm);
  • a jigsaw, preferably with a smooth start, without it it will be difficult to cut complex elements;
  • Sander.

You should take care of the material for future platbands. Traditionally, they take high quality pine boards with a minimum number of knots. If the knots are on the surface of the boards, then the cuts must be made in such a way as to exclude the knot from falling into the place.

Sawing out platbands

The manufacture of window frames begins with cuts, which must be made from the inside. First, holes are drilled along the contour of the pattern, where it is supposed to make openwork patterns in the future. The video shows that when working, the drill must be held perpendicular to the surface of the board.

When the through patterns are ready, cut out the outer contour.

The instrument must be guided from one end to the other, the direction does not matter. Pre-cuts are made in the middle part.

The result is a finished part for window decoration. Next, a similar one is made in a mirror image in order to use it on the opposite side.

Surface grinding

To give the wood an optimal appearance, it is processed with a grinder, the emery wheel of which should have a grain size of 80. As a result, a smooth surface is obtained, ready for painting.

Priming and painting

Before painting, the wood is treated with an antiseptic, which will protect it from decay, from bark beetles. This composition must be applied to the entire surface, not skipping even hard-to-reach places. Scrupulousness in work will allow the platbands to serve for many years.

When the composition is applied, it is necessary to thoroughly dry the blanks, and only then begin painting the parts. The best option is a water-based paint designed for woodworking. Platbands for windows in a wooden house are painted in the color stated in the project. For this project we use two colors of paints: white and cherry.

Work is carried out using 2 brushes: wide (50 mm) and narrow (20 mm). The first is for painting external surfaces, the second is for internal ones.

It is necessary to carefully paint over the details, leaving no uncovered places. After the first layer has dried, the second is applied.

One layer is sufficient. Carefulness is observed in the work. Smudges can completely ruin the overall picture. The products should dry under normal conditions - in the open air.

Assembly

It is better to assemble workpieces into a single composition on a horizontal surface. It is much more convenient than directly on the window.

Beautiful things are the weakness of every person, and if they are made with your own hands, pride in yourself overwhelms the senses. It is to this kind of creativity that woodcarving can be attributed. How original and unique your house looks with carved platbands, where the owner put a particle of his soul into the work.

What is the platband? It looks like a decorative overlay and is mounted on the outside of the window and is a decoration where a decorative technique is used.

It can be:

  1. Plants that demonstrate unity with nature.
  2. The sun, located on the kokoshnik, personifies energy and life.
  3. Earrings indicating the hospitality of the owner of the house.
  4. Cross, symbolizing harmony between the spiritual and material worlds.
  5. A bird talking about the union of all times.
  6. A snake that personifies fertility and wisdom.
  7. Wings that confirm strength and power.

Platbands are different in style, material, shape. They are the completion of a building that emphasizes the individuality and style of the home. And at the same time, they perfectly mask all the imperfections of the opening (gap).

Application area

Widespread use of framing around various openings found themselves in doors and windows. The location of the planks can be both on the outside of the street and inside the premises.

Basically, platbands of the same type are installed, but the thread may differ. And at the same time, the general theme is preserved. For example, in a children's room, the plank will be with a bunny. Flowers are carved around it. Then the teddy bear in the kitchen should also be framed with the same flowers.

Plastic double-glazed windows are now considered a brand. Some people manage to put a wooden plank on them. In this case, you need to paint it white or choose a double-glazed window made of wood.

The planks around the window opening perform several functions:

  1. They combine all buildings in the yard into a single style.
  2. Reduces heat loss.
  3. Protect from dust and litter, moisture, draft.
  4. Increases sound insulation.
  5. I emphasize the uniqueness of the residential building.
  6. An opportunity to express the traditions of the region, family, country.
  7. The ability to visually stretch and expand the house.
  8. They add completeness to the building.
  9. Cover assembly seams.

At the time of our ancestors, the owners of houses firmly believed that the trims on the windows had not only a beautiful and original look, but also were protection from the evil eye and evil spirits. Therefore, we paid close attention to their manufacture, and tried to perform only in a unique form.

Views

The product can be variegated luxurious carvings or have modest shapes. The lower part of it is called "towel", the upper part is called "kokoshnik".

If we consider the platbands by material, they can be from:

  • wood;
  • metal;
  • plastic;
  • foam and polyurethane;

By form:

  • drop-shaped;
  • curly;
  • semicircular;
  • flat;

Before starting work, it is worth stocking up on templates or stencils of carved platbands, without their help it is impossible to achieve an excellent result. And to carry out his work without them is available only to a master who has been working on woodcarving for more than one year.

You can get stencils for today freely - it is in stores, magazines, the Internet.

On them you can apply any drawing that the customer or the master desires. Outlines of plants, animal figurines, ornaments of geometric lines and figures are very popular.

The style of the product can be different, and here the most unusual fantasies of the performer are realized.

How to do it?

Photoshop stencils

Stencils are made in different ways:

  1. Using a graphical editor. The desired image is found and processed with Photoshop. Any computer has a Paint application, it is used for editing, coloring and drawing. By visiting this page, you can develop personal images, from the simplest to the most complex projects. It is possible to add text and various elements to existing drawing files.
  2. Photocopies. A picture that you really liked is selected and, when copied, immediately increases to the desired size. The second option is to scan and print the sample on a printer.
  3. By hand. It uses the technology of scaling (copying) and by cells (linear scaling).

Thread making

We make a template from cardboard, the size must be natural. A personal template is made for all elements of the picture.

Now, you need to lay it on the board and trace the outline with a pencil.

We outline the places for the holes. Let's say you need to cut a piece of paper. To begin with, a hole is drilled, then a leaf is drawn with a jigsaw. Following the holes, we make all the internal patterns, then move on to the external ornament.

There is a copying method for drawing a picture. Here we use carbon paper. We circle the drawing through it onto the board and we get a pattern on the wood.

Required tools:

  • sandpaper of various numbers;
  • jigsaw;
  • drill with a set of drills;
  • a set of chisels;

Instructions:

  1. We make the pattern the same on all windows. For this we use a stencil or sketch.
  2. We place the drawing on the workpiece correctly, where we place all the elements not across the fibers, but along. That will not allow the threads to crack.
  3. We paint over the cut areas with a pencil.

Wood carving is done in two ways:

  1. Invoice. In this version, we use a thinner workpiece, then the work is simplified. Here we make separate elements, which we will then add on a single board.
  2. Slotted. In this case, we make a cut through, we get a kind of lace, which is exquisite and beautifully frames the window.

Installation of platbands

Making a beautiful piece is one thing. But correctly fixing it to the window is another thing.

The aesthetic appearance and long service life are closely dependent on the quality of installation of platbands.

There are two ways of fixing to wooden windows:

  1. Through thorn. The method is simple and not very reliable. The cleats should be installed in places where they will be invisible. This provides additional protection against moisture.
  2. Deaf thorn. The thorn goes into the casing. Whereas a hole is drilled in the frame for it. It is necessary to grease the spike with glue and put it in the groove. The fastening is considered difficult, but it is more reliable than with the first method.

Fastening to a plastic window is made with liquid nails, in order to avoid violation of the integrity of the structure.

Step by step guide:

  1. We take measurements from the window.
  2. Choose a variety of wood and dry it well. The choice of width and height does not play a big role for carved platbands, the main thing is that the thickness is 3 cm.This is if the thread is slotted, for the invoice - 1 cm.
  3. We process the tree with sandpaper, starting with coarse-grained, and at the end with zero.
  4. Cut out stencils.
  5. Take a simple pencil and draw a drawing or pattern on the front side of the wooden surface. Paint over the through slots.
  6. We start cutting out the pattern. Let's start right away with the through holes. Where the jigsaw will enter, it is advisable to use a drill for a more accurate cut.
  7. We carefully process the holes with sandpaper.
  8. To remove dust from blind holes, use a vacuum cleaner.
  9. When using overhead thread elements, we attach them to nails without heads. Moreover, for reliability, we will go through the glue on the back side.
  10. Now we take a damp cloth and wipe the pattern until the area is completely dedusted.
  11. The finishing operation will be considered a stain, with which we will tint the platband or cover it immediately with varnish.

  1. If you are just starting to stencil a casing pattern, you should choose a simpler pattern with larger shapes. The smaller the drawing, the more complex it is. It is good to try elements of the picture from through holes.
  2. Open elements are cut with a jigsaw.
  3. Beech, larch and oak are expensive and difficult to process, but they have a long service life.
  4. The easiest material to process is linden.
  5. The material most commonly used is pine.

Look at all these platbands on the windows in a wooden house, photos of which are posted on this page. These are not just beautiful attributes of a wooden facade that have come down to us from the past.

It has not only decorative, but also a purely practical purpose. We will now consider the simplest platband from both sides.

The practical value of platbands in a wooden house

So, the platbands on the windows in a wooden house, the photos of which you see, are not just beautiful planks on the sides of the window.

Their very first and most important practical role is to close the gaps between the window frame and the log wall of the house. That is, the platband in this situation is a decorative strip that covers the jute or moss, which clogs the gap.

After all, in principle, every wooden house is similar to another. You can try to distinguish them by the roofing material, for example. But what to do in winter when all roofs are covered with a thick layer of snow?

It was the platbands that were the very distinctive sign by which it was possible to distinguish houses in a village or city, when there were still no plates with street names and house numbers.

Even now, you can often hear people respond to a request to show you the way: drive to the turn, and there you will see a house “with swans on the windows”.

Decorative platbands in a wooden house

And finally, the platband, made in the traditional style, just for even the simplest house.

Take a look and imagine removing all these carved decorations. What remains? Just planks and logs. And with platbands, any facade becomes lively and attractive.

Platbands for windows in a wooden house - photo gallery

And here you can choose from a wide variety of frames for windows in a wooden house, photos of which are provided to us by our readers.

See, choose and use the most interesting options in your facade.

This summer, a successful idea came to me - to make some kind of individuality in our country house, so that it pleases the eye and makes it different from other houses.
I thought a little and found a solution, the more I gradually prepared for this. I have long been interested in the decoration of houses in the old days, I reviewed a large number of sites on this topic. There was even a small collection of photos of platbands and decorative elements.
But there, mostly houses of timber or logs were finished, and our house is sheathed with siding, and I thought that you could not make such beauty with siding.
In a word, everything worked out and came up with, it remains only to do.

I apologize in advance that there are not enough detailed photos, tk. at that time he did not yet know about the existence of the 7dach Club and did not take step-by-step photographs, but simply took pictures for his own interest.

I'll tell you how I made the platband, according to my technology and to the size of our window.

Used the tool:

  • electric planer
  • electric jigsaw
  • drill
  • feather drills of different diameters
  • clamps - 4-6 pcs.
  • drill D 4 mm
  • a circular saw
  • square
  • pencil
  • A4 paper - sheets 10

Material and consumables (for 1 platband):

  • self-tapping screws 16 mm long - 8 pcs.
  • self-tapping screws 70 mm long - 2 pcs.
  • pre-dried board, 25 mm thick and 150 mm wide - 7-8 m
  • dowels - 45 pcs.
  • waterproof glue for wood
  • sandpaper - about 10x20 cm
  • plastic corner (the top 10 mm bracket is ideal for attaching a mosquito net to a plastic window) - 2 pcs.

Preparatory stages

1. Creating templates
From the photos I have, I chose the one I liked and reworked it in my own way. You can, of course, draw your own individual platband, but first you need to read a little about the amulets of Russia, about the symbols of Bereginya, the Sun, etc. All this is present in Russian platbands.

Photo used as source material

Our windows have an internal siding platband size of 88x88 cm. This was the starting point for the calculations. Therefore, the side parts should be exactly 880 mm in height and not wider than 140 mm (limited by the size of the board). The length of the upper and lower parts was determined by eye, the main thing is that they fit together beautifully. With the help of Photoshop I made a sketch of the casing in natural size.

2. Dividing a sketch into details in Photoshop

Amulet Bereginya - one of the elements of the casing

Some of the templates

Transferred the drawn details to thick paper and cut out templates.

3. Preparation of blanks

Sawed the board according to the length of the templates with a small margin. When sawing, it is imperative to select sections of the board without large knots. I sharpened these blanks to a thickness of 20 mm and drew the outlines of future patterns on them.

Sawed with an electric jigsaw with a narrow saw. The tilt adjustment of the saw blade must be set to "0", so there will be no burrs at the edges of the cut. Pay attention to the shape of the teeth, other teeth give a poor-quality cut with burrs along the edge, and cleaning it with sandpaper along all the bends is only a punishment for some kind of sin.

Jigsaw saw

Before starting sawing, you need to drill holes in the sawn places with a diameter of 8 mm to insert the file. Then drill out the round parts of the future voids with a suitable perforated drill bit. This is easier than cutting with a jigsaw, especially if the diameter of this part is small. You can't turn around with a jigsaw. And only after that you can start the main work with a jigsaw.

Assembling the sides of the casing

Each side of the casing consists of several carved parts, fastened together with glue and dowels. The assembled carved parts are fixed in the same way on rectangular slats.

Assembly

Dowels are glued into the carved parts, which, when assembled, are inserted into the mating sockets for glue.

Assembly

Assembly

Side part, composed of 4 parts

The black dot at the bottom is a hole (drilled in place) for attaching the platband to the wall.

Top part

The upper part consists of 6 parts. For clarity, the photo shows the joints of the parts and the location of the dowels. Two squares are the places where the brackets are attached from the back side (they are described below).

The locations of the dowels are marked. Consists of 4 parts.

Assembled on a dry (without glue) platband

After assembling all sides, you need to paint them in the desired color. And only then do the final assembly of the casing.
For me, painting is the most tedious part of the job. It is necessary to paint over each curl with a small brush in two layers with intermediate drying. I made the first platband for the attic window and painted it by hand, but now I have made a kit for the remaining 4 windows and will paint only with a spray gun.

bracket

The casing is attached to the window using brackets for plastic windows, screwed to the upper part of the casing from the back side. With these brackets, the platband clings to the upper part of the siding platband like hooks and hangs on the window. From the bottom, in the side parts, one hole is drilled from the side, through them the platband is attracted to the wall with long self-tapping screws.

I made the dowels myself, I prepared about 200 pieces. Enough, a little more and left.

Pediment decoration.

The whole venture with carved lace and platbands began with him. As the saying goes, appetite comes with eating.

Gable

By the way, about the financial side: 5 platbands cost me a little less than 2,000 rubles. Having rummaged on the Internet, I found about the same, but more unpretentious, at a price of 8500 rubles. for one set. So at least 40,000 rubles. remained in the family budget. Also a pleasant incentive.
