How to make a fan with your own hands - the main body


First you need to make the main body and for this you can use a PVC pipe. The main outlet is made of 6" diameter PVC pipe that is 4" wide to form the outer casing of the air outlet.

To form an air pocket inside the main air outlet, we use a conical shaped bowl that fits perfectly on a 6" PVC pipe and its collar sits on the edges of the pipe (see photo above). Cut off the bowl 1 inch above its bottom so that it forms a nice tapered collar inside the main exhaust casing which allows the air to rotate evenly inside the exit cavity before leaving it.

The inner clamp for air outlet is made of PVC pipes 5 inches in diameter. This tube forms a narrow opening nearly 0.5" wide for uniform distribution air from the cavity/air outlet. Three parts, namely the outer 6" PVC pipe, the conical inner case made of plastic bowl, and the inner collar made of 5" PVC pipe, together form the air outlet case.

To form the base, use 3.5" PVC pipe cut to a height of 5". To make the base fit perfectly with the air outlet body, cut one end of the base pipe in curved shape(we cut the bend along the pre-glued electrical tape), and designate the contour with a 6-inch PVC pipe. The pipe is then cut with a jigsaw and then sanded sandpaper to perfectly fit the outer 6" pipe without any gaps between them.

Before gluing the base to the main body, drill a 3″ hole in the 6″ PVC pipe, which will be the passage for air to enter the main body and then to the outlet. The hole is made with a hole saw.

The base is then glued to the outside of the air outlet with superglue. Since the base pipe is perfectly shaped to sit on a 6" PVC pipe, superglue makes a very strong bond between the two pieces.

The air outlet ring is made of 3 mm thick glass fiber sheet, which serves as a connection between the inner half and outer half main air outlet. The ring is made using a jigsaw.

Painting


Since most of the parts of the bladeless fan case are ready, we need to paint them so that they look neat and flawless. Paint everything white using spray paint, except for the fiberglass ring, which is protected from paint with duct tape.

The end result is very good, and the blue fiberglass sheet looks fantastic against a flawless white background.

LED Strip Light


To make the design more attractive and elegant, add 12V LED strip on inside air outlet at the end where the fiberglass sheet will be glued to the inner air outlet sleeve. The light strip is cut to the required length. Tape has a sticky side and sticks when removed protective coating from the back side of the tape, and then stick to the PVC body.

Behind every bladeless fan there is a fan with blades. So to drive our fan, we need to use a 12V high speed fan direct current, which can be taken from an old computer. The fan is mounted inside the base directly below the air outlet housing with four wood screws to hold the fan securely in place. The fan is mounted in such a way that it blows air upwards, so we need the fan to be stable enough.

How to make an air intake in a fan with your own hands?


A pair of air intakes is made just below the server fan on both sides of the base pipe, that is, the base pipe. These inlets allow air to be sucked into the base.

To prevent someone from accidentally injuring their fingers by inserting them into the base of the fan, we glue a metal mesh on both holes. The mesh is first painted matte black and then glued inside the base with hot glue.

Speed ​​control unit - fan speed controller



We decided to use the idea of ​​a PWM speed controller for this fan in order to regulate the amount of air coming out of the fan and thus the noise level. For this, it was developed simple circuit PWM speed controller, as well as a dedicated printed circuit board using AutoCAD Eagle.

The scheme works on the basic principle. It uses a 555 timer IC that switches the transistor several times in every second, and the switching speed depends on the resistance provided by the potentiometer. So by turning the knob, we can adjust the output pulse and thus control the fan speed from the server.

We glue the blades (carefully) on a cardboard sleeve, observing aerodynamics. The planes should be turned 30–45 degrees in opposite directions. For simplicity of design, we assemble a USB fan with two blades. They are easier to balance, and such a propeller will cope with cooling no worse than a three-blade one.

Trial run and balancing

We make a hole in the very center of the bushing (using an awl), put it on the motor axis, and carry out a test run. Of course, before assembly, it is necessary to coordinate the angle of attack of the blades with the direction of rotation of the motor. Otherwise, the fan will blow in the opposite direction. If vibration is present, the propeller can be easily balanced by simply crawling the blades. After making sure that the propeller spins smoothly and blows where it is required, we glue the motor onto the stand. Clay do not feel sorry!

We connect the USB cable to the power wires of the engine. Of course, it is better to do this with a soldering iron, but given the meager power, you can get by with a simple twist. The main thing is not to forget to insulate the connection with electrical tape or tape.

How to determine the power contacts of a USB wire

Any USB connector consists of 4 pins. We are not interested in the middle ones, these are information wires. The 5 volt supply is at the extreme contacts. Desoldering in the illustration:

If you reverse the polarity, nothing bad will happen. The motor will just spin in the wrong direction. How to determine the motor supply voltage? There is no need to look for markings. If the toy (where it was installed) is powered by three batteries (1.5 volts each), then the motor is 5 volts. If it is powered by two batteries, it will not work for USB power.

CD

You don't know how to make an efficient CD fan? It's easier than it looks. We mark the disk into 8 sectors. Even number blades are easier to balance if axial runout occurs.

Cut out the blades with regular scissors. You can do this work with a construction knife, or melt the sectors with a soldering iron - there is not much difference. If you inadvertently break a CD, get a new one.

The extra segments are broken out, the rest are given the aerodynamic shape of the propeller. To do this, it is enough to heat the workpiece over a candle or with the help of building hair dryer. If you make a mistake with the geometry, you can always correct the situation by reheating. This is the advantage of crafts made from a CD.

Glue a thickening in the center of the structure: any piece of plastic 5-10 mm. We drill a hole in it for landing on the motor shaft.

Where to get an electric motor

In this design, a drive from a disk drive is used. Power supply 5 volts, moderate speed. Most likely, you do not have a separate disk drive gathering dust on the shelf, it can be found in system block. No one uses floppy disks anyway, you can safely disassemble it for spare parts.

Convenient flat motor housing allows you to assemble the fan on a flexible leg. To do this, we twist a piece of single-core copper wire into a pigtail, and wind it to the power cable with electrical tape.

A motor with a propeller is glued to a flexible stand either with hot glue or wrapped with the same electrical tape. Unless you're going to enter a fan design contest, you don't have to worry about aesthetics.

After spending 2-3 hours, you get a convenient portable "device" that can be installed anywhere without leaving your computer.

If you want not only fresh air, and to make the product pleasing to the eye - we use other materials. The basic components remain the same: a motor from a child's toy and an old USB cable.
