What is meditation

Basic rules of meditation

When asked whether it is worth trying to ignore external signals, trying to maintain the mood for meditation, the practitioners answer: if you hear your name, and this is important for you, get distracted and answer. Meditation for beginners: how to start meditating

To explain how to meditate for beginners is not overloaded with information, we will describe one of the most simple waysassociated with breathing exercises.

You will need to sit in a comfortable, stable position. You can sit on a chair or armchair, put a pillow under your lower back. Most importantly, do not forget to keep your back straight and put your feet on the floor over your entire foot. Close your eyes and place your hands on your knees, palms up. At first, just watch the breath, inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth. Watch how the air enters your nostrils, expands your lungs, and then exits back, carrying away the tension. When you relax, start breathing with a certain rhythm: on the count of “one” - inhale, then hold your breath for four seconds - “one-two-three-four”, exhale in two counts - “one-two”.

Meditation before bed can be similar to auto-training. Lie in bed and imagine yourself lying on the beach with your feet to the water. Try to feel the water touching your toes on your feet. Then each wave gently envelops you more and more, rising higher through the body. By retreating, it takes away your fatigue and anxiety. The body from bottom to top is more and more filled with warmth, and you feel more and more every cell of it.

I am often asked about the benefits of meditation, what it gives, how it helps and why meditate at all, so I decided to write this article in which I will talk about its effects and true purpose. There are many misconceptions in the world regarding this topic, and we will talk about many of them so that you can distinguish real facts from fictions.

This topic will be divided into two parts. In this article, drawing on my more than 10 years of experience, I will describe what I have learned myself regarding the benefits of meditation over the years. The second part consists of scientific research, which I collected on various resources, mostly in English and translated into Russian.

The essence of meditation

First of all, I want to say that in addition to all the benefits that are given in the research on the link above, meditation still originates in the tradition of yoga. This is part of yoga practices aimed at working with consciousness. Often, this aspect is hushed up and not given due attention to it, from which I always feel a little offended, and instead, the secondary fruits that a person can receive are brought to the fore.

This is all good, of course, you can get great benefits, but if you do not use this opportunity at full capacity, then the whole point is lost.

Nowadays, meditation has been turned into a business, and in order not to scare away an inexperienced public, they often do not talk about all its possibilities, benefits and true purpose. And even worse, it happens that some magical effects are attributed to her, about which, besides those who invent them, no one else knows. It's also worth mentioning the other side,.

So, if you continue and return to the real purpose and benefit, then meditation is primarily designed to lead to harmony with your higher "I", to make life more meaningful and spiritual. By by and large meditation is designed in order to comprehend your "I" and to reunite it with the Higher Consciousness, to establish a connection and relationship with the Lord.

Meditation is essentially present in all religious, spiritual and philosophical movements. Moreover, it is also present in the life of very ordinary people, but sometimes they do not even know about it.

But how do ordinary people meditate?

Meditation of ordinary people, of course, does not have a spiritual bias; it is rather the very principle of awareness. For example, a fisherman on a fishing trip closely watches a float - this is meditation. The hostess evaporates the milk and makes sure that it does not run away, this is also meditation. A scientist reflects on various inventions, a programmer writes a program completely immersing his consciousness in the process, all this can be attributed to shallow meditation, since at such moments a person is concentrated on the moment “here and now”.

Deeper immersion in the meditative process sometimes happens to people when they see the beauty of nature. For example, a person saw a beautiful sunrise, at this moment his soul is filled with a bright feeling of happiness, for a few seconds the stream of thoughts stops, there are no value judgments. These are the moments closest to meditation in everyday life person.

But now we are still talking about a deliberate practice aimed at spiritual self-improvement!

The main purpose of meditation practices is not to rid us of depression, panic attacks, obsessive thoughts, bad habits, develop relationships with someone, improve health, train memory, etc. All this comes by itself, as side effects, all this will be. And health will improve, and there will be a beneficial effect on the brain, and, in principle, everything that I have listed. But the real and true goal and benefit of meditation is spiritual self-improvement.

In 8-step yoga, meditation begins with step 6. The first stages begin with, and meditation begins with the stage of dharana, then dhyana and samadhi. Each of these steps is distinguished by a deeper and longer retention of attention. We will talk about them in future publications.

Basic properties of meditation

Now, though, I will briefly talk about the most important properties and effects that come from meditation.

Mindfulness

Meditation develops a sense of awareness. Mindfulness is an essential attribute on the path of self-improvement. When we stop identifying our true essence with our ego and physical form, we are free from the pressure of the past and fear of the future, presence in the present moment arises.

Mindfulness gives us the opportunity to act and see the problems that arise, not through the prism of templates, but looking at everything with a sober look. To tell the truth, u conscious people and there are fewer problems. As Albert Einstein said, “It is impossible to solve the problem at the level of consciousness at which it arose, it is necessary to rise above it”. This is what happens during awareness.

Most conflicts between people occur due to past grievances, but conscious people have fewer of them, since they are not fixated on the past. They are also able to clearly see how a particular rude word or action can hurt loved one, and then they have self-control, which I will talk about a little later.

Flexibility of mind and prudence

Thanks to meditative activities, a person grows not only spiritually, but also intellectually, as concentration of attention, memory improves, logical and abstract thinking develops.

As I already said, a person ceases to think in a formulaic way, which allows one to consider any situation more broadly, with different angles vision.

Self-control

Practical meditation techniques develop a person's willpower, and accordingly, he grows self-control, that is, the ability to regulate his thoughts, emotions and desires. A meditating person ceases to be a puppet of momentary, impulsive impulses, but takes any situation into his own hands.

Self-control helps you not to postpone tomorrow, diet and exercise for Monday. Strength and energy are enough to do everything you need right now. This ability helps to move towards the intended goal.

When a person takes control of his desires, the need for many bad habits disappears, as he begins to take care of his health. Bad habits often called small weaknesses, this is really a weakness, and by no means a small one. Meditation helps to build up the willpower with which to say "No!" all bad habits.

Relaxation

Some people sometimes confuse relaxation and meditation, although they are different things. Relaxation techniques do not necessarily involve a meditative process, but during meditation, muscle relaxation (relaxation) always occurs.

The scientifically proven fact that during stress all the muscles in the body are in a very tense state, there is an opposite relationship - when muscle tone is relaxed, mental tension weakens.

This has a positive effect on the entire body. Bioenergetic flows are harmonized, insomnia disappears, stress resistance increases.

Meditation relieves depression and anxiety

Getting rid of depression and anxiety fears is not as easy as it is presented on many meditation sites. It is not enough to simply meditate for 20 minutes a day to resolve serious internal crises. There are various meditation practices, but not all of them are able to get to the bottom of the truth. Surface meditation that does not touch the deeper aspects of the heart and soul will not ultimately eliminate the cause and root of problems. Undoubtedly, any meditation that is aimed at developing awareness will improve the state, depression will decrease and may even go away for a while, but serious, long-term work is necessary for a deep transformation to occur.

A parable about overcoming crises

There is a certain kind birds of preythat live a very long time. By about the age of 40, their claws grow strongly, and on the beak appears limescale, the plumage becomes too heavy and they can no longer fully hunt and get food for their existence. Then they pull out excess plumage from themselves and thus return to full life for another 30-40 years. This is a rather painful process, but the one who goes through it receives a reward at the cost of life.

Likewise, meditation is a serious deep work on your consciousness, which gives amazing results. A person stands face to face with his fears, depression and other problems, and in the process of serious work, their causes are destroyed, and not only external manifestations.

Purpose and mission of life

Meditation helps you find your purpose. After all, every person in this life has his own specific mission, but when our soul comes into this world, we forget about it. With age, our mind "grows" with someone else's opinion about how to live correctly, and further and further leads away from the true goal.

With the help of meditation sessions, a person can get out of the oppression of public opinion and hear his inner “I”. Thanks to this, over time, the inner potential is revealed. This does not mean, of course, that a person will immediately become an artist, a writer, and an engineer. Just the gift that the Creator has laid in us will begin to awaken. Moving in this direction and developing our talent, we will achieve great success on the path of our mission.

Imagine a mirror that is covered in dust. We want to see our reflection in it, but we see nothing. It is necessary to take a rag and wipe the dust from the mirror, and the cleaner it is, the more clearly we see ourselves. So is meditation, it helps us to see ourselves in real life. In order to communicate with the Lord, it is not necessary to go to any specific place, it is enough to look inside yourself, into your soul, because there is a divine particle in each of us.

The Lord is present in the heart of every living being, and sometimes gives us answers to all questions. They can come to us as flashes of insight or intuition. Thanks to spiritual, meditative practices, a person more subtly feels the signs of the Universe and feels his relationship with the world.

All these are entry points, there are many of them, but they have the same goal - to achieve a state of inner silence and inner peace. Perhaps it is good when each person can choose the practice to their liking. Can you do without these practices? It is possible, but for most people it is not available, nevertheless, the social environment makes itself felt, the emotional and mental background interferes, as well as the lack of experience of inner silence in our culture.

On the other hand, meditative states arise in our ordinary life more or less constantly and one must learn to be aware of them. Our culture simply does not have the experience of realizing them. We immediately try to explain everything with our mind and speak in words, when it happens that we need to be silent and listen to ourselves.

How often we lack inner peace, the ability to assess the situation without emotion and without bias. This is what a meditative state is for. Meditation is not something transcendental and unattainable. Meditation can be successfully taught and applied in life.

Today I decided to write about enough important topic: meditation. Many people talk about meditation, it is believed that many wealthy and successful people meditate daily, and this is true. However, few people know what this process is and why it is needed. In this small post, I want to tell you a little about meditation and where you should start in order to learn it.

You should start with the ability to relax. This is the most important thing in meditation. Now you can go directly to the techniques of meditation. Simple ways to meditate. You can do it too!

Meditation is a waking dream. Plunging into yourself, you can not only relax and unwind, but also generate a new vital energy... The technique of meditation is complex and is learned through long, hard training. But this does not mean that it is not available in simple home conditions: the relaxation technique can be simplified and freely applied in everyday life.

The basis of meditation is correct breathing. There are, again, many techniques and types, but "real" meditation allows you to work on the breath only after reaching a certain spiritual level. For us, ordinary people, everything is much simpler.

Sit in a meditative position that is comfortable for you - if you cannot "wrap" your legs in the lotus position, you can use a Turkish net - and relax as much as possible. Start breathing slowly and steadily. The main thing now is to find the most suitable depth and rhythm of breathing for you. Inhalation and exhalation should be the same in duration, as well as the time between them. This breathing will be similar to how you breathe when you fall asleep - clearly and deeply.

Once you get into the rhythm, try to get all thoughts out of your head. At first it may seem impossible, but you will definitely succeed in time. Personally, I have always tried to imagine absolute emptiness, a kind of black square of Malevich in my head. When you can think of nothing, move on to the next step.

At this stage, you can act in different ways, depending on what results you want to achieve. Close your eyes and ...

Option number 1. Getting rid of negative emotions.

Relaxing and continuing to watch your breath, mentally refer to the problem that worries you the most. It can be a negative emotion, a bad feeling, whatever. Having "felt" this very emotion, consider it, sort out all your feelings, your attitude to the problem on the shelves. Now imagine that there is a very close and loving person, and it will not necessarily be a real and familiar person. A handsome prince, a character in your favorite book, or maybe your beloved husband - it doesn't matter, the main thing is that he evokes positive feelings in you. Tell him about what is eating you, try to give your emotions, freeing yourself from them.

Option number 2. Easy rest.

In order to get some rest during the working day, retire for a while and go through all of the above preparatory stages (breathing, "emptiness in the head"). Sit for a while in this state of light half-nap, contemplate yourself and try to feel how fatigue leaves your body. It is best to connect visualization: fatigue can "flow" from your fingertips in the form of a thick, dark liquid or light dust from your skin.

Option number 3. Vital energy.

Imagine that you are in blooming garden... You are sitting on silky grass, the wind quietly rustles the branches of trees with fragrant flowers. Feel their scent, inhale it. The sky above you is light, but covered with clouds. But while you are enjoying the smells of the garden, the wind scatters the clouds and looks out gently warm sun... Dozens of golden rays rush towards you, which penetrate your body and nourish with energy. Every joint, every muscle is filled with strength, the mind becomes clear. The brighter you visualize it all, the more energy you get.

In the final step, it is important to complete the meditation correctly. Don't jump up right away, everything should be just as measured and calm. Gradually turn off the visualization (say goodbye to the hero, slowly cut off the rays), carefully open your eyes. Look around the room you are in, “remember” it, and then wiggle your fingers and toes. Do you feel how the stress has gone, giving way to freshness and vigor? Yes? So you did everything right. You can slowly get up, stretch a little and shake yourself.

With renewed vigor and positive attitude get down to interrupted business. As you can see, meditation is not difficult at all and is very effective in matters of relaxation. Do not forget to smile at yourself and use the received energy boost!

    How to meditate and what techniques are there for this?

    Today there are a large number of masters who are engaged in teaching meditation and even more different techniques for meditation. We will consider the essence of the meditation process itself, and after that everyone will be able to personally choose what suits him personally.

    The essence of meditation is that there is a process of entering a trance or near-trance state. Therefore, the essence of what you will do should be to bring you to a state of calmness and complete disconnection from any thoughts. Unfortunately, complete disconnection from thoughts is rarely achieved, sometimes it takes years of training, but, despite this, even a very small decrease in the intensity of the thought process can already bring you amazing results.

    To meditate means to reflect on the level of your immediate "time", while using "energy". The more we think about meditation, the more it opens up "time" for us, immersing our consciousness in the "experience" of life. Looking into meditation means being able to feel the “energy” followed by reflection. Meditation, in turn, is a practice in which the "sound" of the body is directly involved.

    We can say that any dialogue with your subconscious is, in fact, meditation. By opening meditation, we at the same time open up the world of another life. Meditation is exactly what says inside us ... Meditation is also a balance between all energies at the informational level.

    As for the techniques of meditation, there are quite a few of them. They are mainly divided into Active and Passive meditation practices:

  • Passive meditation - consists in the process of plunging into a trance with the help of static positions (Lotus position, yoga position, just lying or standing) and, undoubtedly, the techniques of self-hypnosis or distraction. Most often, distracting objects are used in such cases, for example, a candle, a pendulum, a mirror, and much more. Mantras or internal dialogue are also used for this.
  • Active meditation - consists in the process of immersion in a trance with the help of monotonous repetition of various or physical stress, due to which the thought process is completely blocked and the person, thus, plunges into a state of trance. Techniques of this kind are quite often practiced by masters of various martial arts and, in some cases, apply them directly in their training.

    Meditation can be used for various purposes. You can look for answers to your questions, you can use it to directly improve your body and fight the disease that bothers you. Meditation helps to become more confident, strong and beautiful, and much more.

    Meditation process

    It is necessary to set a timer or alarm clock for yourself in advance for a time that is convenient for you. Basically it is 15-20 minutes, but less is not recommended. Further, it is worth finding an action for yourself that, in turn, would not burden you, was easy and required some effort to complete it. Next, start repeating this exercise and focus fully on what you are doing.

    At the same time, you need to monitor your breathing and try to keep it even. Correct breathing helps to accelerate the effect of meditation. At that moment, when you feel tired, you should not be distracted by it, just continue the actions and think only about the actions themselves, while trying not to pay attention to the fact that you began to feel tired.

    For some time, you will no longer feel the emerging fatigue, the sensations will become more pleasant, and the movements will be smooth and light. If this effect does not happen when the alarm rings, then you just need to stop and rest, plunge into. At this point, your brain will still be focused on the action that you performed, therefore, thinking about only one thing, it rests.

    Passive meditation

    There are quite a few such techniques, the easiest and simplest ones will be given below.

    To carry out this technique, you need to find the most comfortable position for yourself (lying, sitting or standing), close your eyes. In this position, you need to try as much as possible to clear your mind of thoughts and calm down. Then imagine that you are in a world familiar to you, but in an unfamiliar room.

    Imagine that in the middle of the room there is a staircase that leads down, and, looking around, you will imagine that you are going through several levels of your consciousness, and with each step you take you will become more and more relaxed, calm and peaceful. Next, you should go down to the very bottom, and feel yourself immersed in a deep trance state.

    At that moment when the alarm clock rings, you need to slowly get out of this state without being distracted by it and take with you everything that you felt in it, and all those positive emotionswho were able to experience.

    You can also use the following method for meditation.

    It is better to carry out the process of meditation with special music, it is also called meditative music. You can choose it to your taste, it is best to do this in specialized stores. The sounds of nature would be an excellent option: the sounds of the surf, birdsong, the sound of a forest stream, etc.

    As for the direct process of preparing for meditation, it, in turn, consists in completely relaxing, mainly the eyes are the most difficult to relax. Therefore, during meditation, it is recommended to light a candle, this in turn is quite effective method so that the eyes can relax and concentrate completely on the fire.

    Choose a quiet and secluded place for meditation, where no one will disturb you. It is also worth making sure that no one bothers you during meditation. The place where the meditation will be held should be comfortable, clothes that do not hold down and distract your attention, it is best to wear something more spacious. The lighting should not be too bright, it is better to draw the curtains and leave the light only table lamp... Incense sticks will create an even more comfortable environment. The scents of ylang-ylang, rose, jasmine, and sandalwood are mainly used for meditation. If you do everything correctly, then you will enter the state of meditation quickly and easily.

    Imagine something beautiful and pleasant in your mind. It can be a garden with your favorite flowers, and a gentle sea and some kind of pleasant memory from childhood. At first it will be difficult to disconnect from extraneous thoughts, but here the rhythm of calm breathing and music will help.
