How to choose the right frame or collage for your photo

First of all, determine the required length and width. Wooden frames can be made to order according to the specified dimensions. This is important, because if the photo is larger, then it will have to be cropped or printed again, and when the photo is smaller, blank edges remain, which does not look very nice.
Second, pay attention to the shape. They can be square, rectangular, oval, or others. For example, rounded shapes are most suitable for portraits. close-up... Rectangular ones are more versatile and will suit almost any photo. Oval photo frames must be chosen carefully enough, since the corners of the image will need to be cropped, and at the same time it should not lose important details and fit correctly.
Thirdly, the choice of color and style should harmoniously fit into the interior of the room in which they will be located. This, of course, does not mean that they should merge with the general background, on the contrary, sometimes they can be given special emphasis.
In addition, it is worth considering whether there will be carved photo wooden frames are placed on the wall, or stand on a horizontal surface. As a rule, the photo frames provide several types of fastening and installation at once, but not always.

The material from which we will make a wooden frame is stained cedar, which you will not find anywhere else! Only here you can buy wood carved products made of stained cedar.
What it is?
This is a sawn cedar trunk that has lain in the river for over 50 years. The sapwood of a cedar trunk, for a long period of time under water, becomes blue and grows overgrown with moss, and the wood acquires an unusually pleasant pinkish color. Moss with rotten sapwood is first chopped down with an ax manually, and then only sawn into planks.
Under water, the internal tension of the tree is balanced, so a product made of stained cedar does not bend, does not crack and lasts forever!

And so, the material for the frame is ready. For comparison, we photographed the cut with a chisel on a board made of stained cedar and regular dry cedar, so that the texture and color of the material could be seen.

History of origin

The art of wood carving has a long history. For the first time, the idea to decorate mirrors and paintings with a wooden carved frame came to the mind of the masters of Ancient Rome, at the beginning of the 4th century. Thanks to the efforts of artists, relief frames have become a part of everyday life. With the emergence of new styles in architecture, carved products become an obligatory attribute of the interior of living quarters for the nobility, palaces and museums. The picture, enclosed in a rich carved wooden frame, which you can buy right now on our website, looks attractive and luxurious.

Since ancient times, when people just learned to build dwellings, they wanted to somehow decorate their home. In addition to purely decorative purposes, various patterns also had sacred meaning: painting, amulets, carving served as amulets for superstitious villagers. Until the revolution, carvings were used to decorate the facades of houses, window frames, as well as the interior decoration of churches and temples. Later, in the Soviet Union, this art was, if not completely forgotten, then only a small part survived, mainly in villages and villages. Photos, drawings and even the simplest sketches for creating beautiful wood carvings will be useful for craftsmen and beginners in this business.

Nowadays, almost all jewelry has lost its sacred meaning, and such decor of the interior and facades of houses has become an attribute of rich people either craftsmen... Not everyone can afford, say, furniture with carved legs or curly skirting boards in an apartment: most of them are made by hand, so either wealthy people order it for interior design, or craftsmen cut it out for themselves and their home.

At this time, carving is taught in some schools, courses and even at universities. But it is not necessary to pay a lot of money for training, it is possible to master this skill on your own, using our selection of photographs, drawings and simple sketches to create beautiful wood carvings.

Various tools are used to carve wood, both hand and electric.... Electric include a milling cutter, electric jigsaw, a drill, and electric multifunctional machines can also come in handy. Concerning hand tool, then the choice here is even greater: various chisels help in carving, manual jigsaw and a hacksaw, files, joiner's mallets, sandpaper. In addition, specialized wood sawing kits are available. They can be bought at large hardware stores, as well as ordered from Chinese websites. Just beware of too cheap options, because the quality may turn out to be inappropriate for working with such demanding material.

In addition to tools, you will need stains, varnish and brushes to apply them. They will be needed after performing artistic carving for final finishing ornaments.

We study the varieties of artistic wood carving

There are many types of artistic carving. They differ in the way they are cut, appearance finished product and, in some cases, tools for their manufacture.

  • Through wood carving - features and technology.

Through thread can be slotted or cut. Slotted is made with a chisel or chisel. Sawing - the same thing, but the patterns are sawn with a jigsaw. Also, this type of carving is called openwork. Widely used for decoration window frames and facades of wooden houses.

  • Stencils for wood carving.

  • Flatbed woodcarving: creation, varieties.

This type of carving is characterized by the fact that a drawing is cut into the depth on a flat background. Depending on the ornament, it is subdivided into contour, geometric, brace. Contour threads look like grooves cut into a flat background. Geometric contains a combination of shapes, hence its name. Bracket - the ornament consists of indentations in the form of brackets. The photo shows examples of work in a similar style, as well as drawings for performing work in this technique.

  • Technique of flat-relief woodcarving: types of ornaments, motives.

Plane-relief carving is a three-dimensional ornament depicting animals, faces, even scenes, carved on wood and protruding from the background to the same height, that is, when viewed from the side, it looks flat, which is where this name comes from. This technique is popular when making jewelry for caskets, paintings, and individual decorative items.

  • Sculptural woodcarving technique.

The most difficult, but also spectacular, can be called this type of carving as sculptural. In this case, a wooden blank is needed, from which a volumetric element is gradually cut out with chisels and various curly tools. This technique includes various souvenirs and figurines, sometimes the legs of tables, chairs and sofas, and you can also cut out a detail, for example, for a photograph frame or other decorative element, after individual details glued to the base.

How to work with woodcarving templates and stencils

To create your first carved product, you need to print a stencil and transfer it to a tree. This can be done using carbon paper, as well as by cutting out the outline of the paper and outlining it with a pencil. Next, cut along the contours using the selected technique. Best for beginners slotted thread, because in this case it is necessary to correctly hold the instrument in your hands and follow the contour clearly. And for craftsmen who already have more experience, the following sketches for more complex techniques will come in handy.
