Plywood knives: how to fix kitchen utensils, design features and repair of a wooden butterfly and karambit. How to make a wooden knife with your own hands? How to make a knife out of wood

Wooden knife with your own hands. Wooden knife for training with your own hands. How to make a wooden knife. Non-stick coatings modern kitchen utensils require certain cutlery that could not damage the inside of pans and pots. As a rule, these are wooden, plastic or silicone devices. In terms of environmental friendliness and aesthetic appearance the best can be designated wooden appliances. In this instruction, we will clearly demonstrate how to make a wooden knife for cutting minced meat from semi-cooked meat. You can use a similar device directly while cooking in a pan with a non-stick coating.

materials

To make a wooden knife with your own hands, you will need to prepare:
bar natural wood(sycamore);
wooden hammer;
saw for cutting grooves;
pencil;
jigsaw;
chisel;
cutting knife;
sandpaper.

Step 1. you have wooden block prepare. To do this, remove the bark, if any, and give it a rectangular shape along the length corresponding to the desired dimensions of the knife.

Step 2 With a pencil, outline the desired shape of the knife and, using a jigsaw, start cutting it out. Be sure to pay attention to the location of the fibers in the wood. Follow them for more detailed processing.

Step 3 Take a grooving saw, a chisel and a wooden mallet and gradually refine the shape of your wooden knife, including sharpening its blade.

Step 4 Having finally formed a knife from a wooden block, check that it fits comfortably in your hand. Treat the surface making it smooth. Finally, go over the surface of the product with fine-grained sandpaper. Remove all fine dust left after processing.

Good day! Today's article is about do shoe knife (or rather, its variety) their hands. Such a knife is an indispensable tool in the arsenal of any woodworker / carpenter / shoemaker.

Step 1: Prepare the necessary materials

For the manufacture of such crafts you will need:

  • A strip of high carbon steel (in my case XC75).
  • Angle grinder (grinder) with a cutting disc or a hand saw for metal;
  • Files / belt sander / sander;
  • Two brass pins with a diameter of 6 mm;
  • One brass tube diameter 10 mm;
  • Two-component epoxy adhesive;

  • Hardwood for cheeks (overlays);
  • Clamps / clamps;
  • Square;
  • Sandpaper with a grit of 600 and 1000 units;
  • drying oil;
  • Ruler and marker;
  • 20 cm (10 inches) flat leather cord.

First, let's decide on the size of the knife. Use a caliper to mark a 3 cm (1.2 inch) wide strip. Do not make the marking line too deep, otherwise it will be difficult to remove. You can also use a ruler and marker. The most important thing is to get a straight marking line.

Step 2: Cutting the Steel

We fix the wooden block as a guide. Using a grinder, cut off a strip of steel of a given width. The length of the strip was 15 cm.

After that, we cut the steel strip into blanks of a given length.

Step 3: Align the edges of the workpiece

If you decide to make several knives at once, then follow the next step. If you are only making one knife, you can skip this step.

Use double sided tape to secure the pieces together. For greater reliability, we fix them with two clamps.

Align the edges with a file or tape grinder to get exactly the same blanks.

Step 4: Marking Lines

Draw the center line, and then draw the triangle.

The shape and angle of the blade will depend entirely on your wishes/needs.

Step 5:

Using a grinder / file, we will give the workpiece a triangular shape.

Draw a semicircle at the other end of the workpiece and grind it.

Step 6: Punch

Using a punch, make marks for the holes that need to be drilled for the pins.

Step 7: Drilling Holes

Drill centering holes with a small drill bit. Remember to use oil/WD40. Then drill the holes to the correct size.

Pins will be mounted in the holes that are located closer to the end of the blade. A brass tube will be installed in the extreme hole.

Step 8: Descents

Now we can give the blade its final shape using a belt sander, grinder, etc. But I recommend using a simple file. By shaping the slopes of the blade by hand, you can not go wrong and get slopes with the same angles.

Slowly, we will form a descent on one side, then take on the other side. Try to keep the same angle. Do not worry about possible mistakes you can always fix them.

Step 9: Finishing the slopes

Once you're happy with the shape of the knife, clean up the edges of the blades using a finer file. You can modify the shape of the blade to its heat treatment. When both sides are completely identical, you can move on to the next step.

Step 10: Hardening

The XC75 must be fired in oil at a blade temperature of 790-810ºC / 1454-1490ºF (blade color must be between red and bright red). Let's heat it up with a burner. During heating, try to avoid getting the flame on the end of the blade. It should warm up from the main part of the handle.

Once the color turns bright red, quickly cool the blade in oil. (be sure to wear protective equipment and respirator).

In order to check the hardening, we use a file. If you hear a clear sound and the file does not scratch the blade, the hardening is successful and you can move on.

Step 11: Vacation

We clean the burnt oil from the blade with sandpaper (I used 600). This will allow you to see the color of the blade after tempering.
"If you love the knife, let it go." Vacation is needed in order to relieve stress in the steel after hardening. Otherwise, it will be hard and may break. Put the blade in the oven for one hour at 230ºC / 446ºF. The color of the blade should now be between light yellow and blue.

Let's leave it to cool all night.

Step 12: Sanding/Polishing

Finish the surface of the blade with sandpaper (600 and 1000) glued to a flat surface.
You can also wet the paper to make sanding easier.

Step 13: Making the Overlays

Now it's time to start making cheeks for the knife. For all three knives I used different types wood: mahogany, wenge and Japanese beech.

Cut off two strips 3 cm wide (along the width of the blade).

You will also need two 6mm pins and one 8mm brass tube to secure the pads to the blade.

Step 14

Use double sided tape to attach the blade to one pad. We drill holes.

Remove the blade and fasten both pads together. Then again drill holes in the second half. This way all holes will be aligned and assembly will be very easy.

Step 15: Finishing the Overlays

Let's make descents on the "cheeks", forming them in accordance with the shape of the blade.

Step 16: Assembly

We mix two-component epoxy glue.

Glue the pads to the blade with epoxy resin and the pins that were made before. Wipe off any excess adhesive with a paper towel.

Let's clamp the knife in the clamps. In order not to scratch the surface of the "cheeks", we fix wooden blocks on the overlays.

Let's leave everything to dry overnight.

Step 17: Final Sanding

Once the epoxy is fully cured, remove any excess material (wood or brass).

Sand the pads with a grinder / sandpaper.

Upon completion, we impregnate the tree with drying oil or beeswax.

Step 18: Everything is ready!

Small leather straps allow you to hang the knives on the wall without scratching the blade / dulling the cutting edge.

That's all! Thank you for your attention)

Knives are currently popular not only in the kitchen, but also among people who have connected their lives with extreme outdoor activities - these are: fishing, hunting, tourism, etc.

In modern times, there are various knives on the market: variable models, different sizes and designs. But none of them can replace a knife that is made by hand.

How to make a knife with your own hands is often written on the Internet, and you should try to make them.

Knives: types and main properties

In the photos of the knife on the Internet, you can see that each product is creative element created from various mechanisms.

There is a large classification of knives depending on their functionality: combat, tourist, folding (for example, a butterfly), knives designed for hunting, multi-tools, bivouac knives, as well as ordinary kitchen knives.

Kitchen knives are bought ready-made, but knives intended for hunting or for tourism can be easily made at home on your own.

There are also such knives as survival knives, the main task of which is to help with existence in the wild. This option is relevant for tourists and hunters.

The blade of such a knife is usually no more than 12 cm. This length is sufficient for cutting wood, processing game, cleaning fish, or other similar actions. The small dimensions make it easy to transport such a knife.

In the manufacture of such a knife, great attention should be paid to the material intended to create the blade. Steel is often preferred.

Steps to create a knife

To get a positive result during the manufacture of the knife, you must first sketch out the drawing of the knife. In this case, you can know in advance what exactly you want to achieve in the end.

Instructions on how to make a knife at home includes a number of rules.

Making a knife step by step

Cut out the blank for the future knife. Relying on finished drawing, cut out the shape for the knife.

You will need a knife sharpener. With its help, bring the base to the desired shape. And after that, an already understandable blank will be in the hands, where you can distinguish the places of the handle and blade.

Rough sharpening of knives. At this stage, you clearly need to know what your future knife is intended for. If it is made for hunting, fishing or hiking trips, then it is better to give preference to the blade type of sharpening.

And, if the knife is created to function in the kitchen or in the garden, then a razor type will do.

Do not expect perfect sharpening from this stage, because this is just a draft, intended to determine the future shape.

If the blade is pre-prepared, then you can start working with the handle. The handle is made using the most various materials- these are: wood, organic glass, bones, thick types of leather, etc.

Note!

Having cut out the workpiece to create the handle, you should check whether it fits comfortably in your hand, as well as its proportionality with respect to the blade. The handle for the knife is fixed using the riveting method.

The shape for the foot handle is attached using a grinding machine.

The knife is ground and polished on the basis of sandpaper.

The final sharpening of the blade is done after sharpening on a sharpener, also using sandpaper.

At the end, the finished knife is polished with velvet or polish.

Note!

As you can see, the process of making a knife with your own hands is not that difficult, so everyone can try their hand at this area.

You can also set the necessary and desired design for the future knife. Pay special attention to the handle during the design process.

knife design

Since it is by the handle of the knife that the rest can then judge your creative thinking and status.

Some write their names on the handles of the knife, draw certain patterns and sketches in the form of tattoos.

The simplest knife can be built in an emergency in the forest, the main thing is to find the materials necessary to create it.

Note!

It is worth finding only the cutting part for the knife, and then you should insert it only into the handle, which will be in the form of a piece of wood, ropes or leather.

wood knife

Every avid or novice hunter wants to have a quality hunting knife, which is needed not only for slaughtering and cutting animal carcasses, but also for various kinds of work in the forest. Commercially available mass-produced knives usually do not withstand intensive use, and a dagger made according to custom order are usually expensive. Therefore, many hunters do not use any other option than to make a hunting knife with their own hands. However, it must have the following characteristics:

  • Straight handle for ease of striking when finishing. Often a sharp blade is used, located in the center (hunting dagger).
  • The length of the blade, which is from 10 to 15 cm.
  • The use of solid steel in the manufacture.
  • Handle material: wood, bark, hard non-slip artificial materials with moderate topography. The knife should be comfortable for cutting with movements towards you and away from you, not slip in your hand.
  • There are no extras or features.

Before making a hunting knife, you need to choose right material. If it is steel, it must have the following characteristics:

  • The degree of hardness on the Rockwell scale is from 20 to 67 HRC. The harder the metal, the greater its resistance to deformation.
  • Impact strength
  • Ductility of steel
  • The stability of the metal when exposed to temperature.

The most suitable metal for the manufacture of a high-quality hunting knife is alloyed carbon steel, stamped tool steel with the addition of chromium and molybdenum, damask or Damascus steel. Damascus steel has the best quality characteristics. If it is not possible to use a quality raw material, you can use metal objects, giving them a second life: a spring, a file, an old garden tool.

hunting knife

To make a knife for hunting with your own hands from steel, you need to follow the guide:

  1. The first stage is the making of a sketch of the future weapon.
  2. The second stage is forging. A furnace or hearth is kindled, the steel is heated to a certain temperature. First, a shank is made to make it more convenient to hold the workpiece. Next, the shape of the tip is formed. The blade should be forged according to the outlined sketch, without changing the thickness of the steel.
  3. Handle manufacturing. It can be type-setting and integral. If type-setting, the material for the handle is measured in accordance with the shank, both parts of the handle are applied to it and glued. If the handle is one-piece, a hole is made in it, then it is mounted on the shank with glue. After that, it should be carefully sanded for convenience. For the manufacture of the handle, it is best to use fiberglass impregnated with epoxy resin, or textolite. They are light and strong, unlike wood, which can be damaged when dropped, or metal, which can freeze through temperature changes and is heavy.

file knife

How to make a hunting knife from a regular file? For this you will need:

  1. File
  2. Vise
  3. Jigsaw or scissors for metal
  4. A hammer
  5. Drill with a drill for metal
  6. Sandpaper
  7. Material for the handle (wood, leather, piece of textolite).

The first step is to harden the steel. Ideally, a home oven is suitable for this, in the furnace of which you need to throw a file so that it heats up there for 4-6 hours, and then cools down there. A blank is made for the future knife, a file shape is cut out of it. With the help of sandpaper, the shape of the knife is processed, its rough sharpening is performed. On the wooden plates, which will be the handle, holes are made for attaching to the knife by riveting. Pre-linings need to be coated with epoxy. The handle can be shaped using a jigsaw. After that, the knife is polished and polished with sandpaper, and the final sharpening: first on a grinder, then again with sandpaper. You can polish your resulting blade with felt or polish.

wood knife

As cutting tool, especially in field conditions you can use wood. To make a wooden knife with your own hands, you need to use chips and flakes of coniferous branches that have a sharp cutting edge or other strong and quality wood. The process of making a knife from wood with your own hands is simpler than steel: you need to prepare your favorite sketch on paper, which you transfer to a wooden canvas. Wooden knives are usually made in one piece. After that, given desired shape handle and blade with a chisel, file, the blade is sharpened. Ready product covered with varnish or fired.

Another option on how to make a wooden knife is to make it from medium thickness plywood. Similar to the works described above, a sketch is first made. Then you need to prepare the three constituent elements of the blade: the blade and two parts of the handle, consisting of a round holder and a base plate. The blade is sharpened, and the handle is processed with a file and sandpaper to remove all irregularities.

DIY stone knife

The material for the manufacture of a knife blade can be flat-shaped rocks, such as slate, flint, obsidian, quartz. Layered mineral rocks may well replace steel with their sharp cutting edge. To make a tool, you will need a stone one and a half times larger than the original product, without cracks and defects. It must be split at an angle of up to 90 degrees so that a flat surface is obtained. After reaching the desired flat shape, you can process the handle by wrapping it with improvised materials or enclosing it in wood. At home, the stone is processed with a hammer. The stone is placed on a flat hard surface covered with felt. Thus, it will not vibrate from impacts and move. The final formation of the blade can be done with pliers, breaking off piece by piece from its edge. The handle must be attached using epoxy resin, which can be wrapped with strips of leather or fabric on top. A stone knife is not afraid of corrosion, is very sharp and does not require sharpening, but a fall from a height can lead to its split.

A knife is an indispensable tool that is needed in any household. It is not very easy to choose the right product so that it serves for a long time and efficiently. However, you have the opportunity to make homemade knives that will not be inferior in quality to store ones. Let's consider this question in more detail.

Advantages of homemade knives

Among the advantages homemade products can be identified as:

1. Free choice of knife type.

2. The use of improvised materials, which makes the cost of the finished item lower.

3. Possibility of self-design of the knife handle.

4. Satisfaction of creativity.

In principle, homemade knives, if you follow the manufacturing technique, are practically not inferior in quality to industrial products. Naturally, all stages of production at home must be strictly observed. Also consider that in the factory, instead of people, almost all actions are performed by machines. At self-manufacturing you have to do a lot of manual work.

Product varieties

Before you make homemade knives, you need to decide what you need them for. So, we can distinguish the following types of products:

  • hunting;
  • combat;
  • household.

A feature of such products is that the first and second types require permission, if, of course, you buy them in a store. Also, homemade knives differ in the shape and length of the blade, according to the material used for manufacturing. The production process is the same for everyone. Sometimes there are only some nuances.

How to choose the necessary materials?

It is not very difficult to build homemade knives. However, this is a painstaking work that requires a lot of patience and time. Before starting work, you need to be sure to select those materials that will be useful to you in the process. So, you should prepare:

1. Steel, the thickness of which reaches 2 mm or more. Instead, a file or cable can be used.

2. Wood or other material from which the handle may be made.

3. Lacquer (if wood was nevertheless chosen).

4. Rivets for fixing the handle.

5. Fine sandpaper.

Need in additional material, of course, may occur. It all depends on what type of product you want to make.

A rope knife is very interesting. For example, you have the opportunity to get a very original handle from the shank. However, the most difficult stage is the welding of disparate wires, of which, in fact, the cable consists. Wherein this process for a beginner with no experience it will be very difficult. From the first time you will not be able to make such a product.

More preferred is the variant of forge welding. That is, the cable needs to be heated, sprinkled with borax, heated again, and then start hitting the material with a heavy hammer. The procedure is physically difficult.

What tool will be needed?

Now let's talk in more detail about what exactly you will work with. In order to make homemade knives, you will need the following tool:

  • Vice. Thanks to them, you can fix the workpiece for further polishing and sharpening.
  • Metal scissors or a jigsaw with an appropriate blade.
  • Hammer (if you use a cable or file).
  • Gas burner or other equipment for hardening metal.
  • Drill and drill of the appropriate size. This is necessary to secure the handle with a rivet.
  • Grinding machine with different nozzles. Naturally, you can use sandpaper, but it will not be as effective, and the work will be laborious.

You will also need sketches of knives that you can draw yourself. Wherein Special attention pay attention to all parameters if you are going to build a military weapon. In addition, now you can find a ready-made drawing that will meet your requirements.

Step by step instructions for making

Before you make a knife, you need to thoroughly prepare. If the drawing and all necessary materials If you have the tools, then you can start working. And you can do everything in the apartment or in the garage. However, keep in mind that the work is noisy and dusty.

Naturally, before work, the metal should be hardened. So, the manufacturing process itself consists of the following steps:

1. Cutting out the workpiece. Its length is 20-25 cm, and its width is 2-3 mm. You will need a vise to work. First, a rectangle of given dimensions is cut out on steel. Next, the outline of the future knife is drawn on it.

2. Processing the workpiece on a grinding machine. And it is necessary to work with the edges. As a result of the procedure, you should get a division of the future knife into two parts: a handle and a blade.

3. Roughing on a plane. Naturally, first you need to choose the type of sharpening. It can be bladed (used in the manufacture of hunting knives) and shaving (for the production of household items).

4. How to make a knife, its blank, you have already figured out. Now let's start making the handle. For work, you can use wood, plexiglass or other material that can be easily processed. To begin with, it should be marked and cut. Next, a hole is made for the rivet. Now the handle can be processed with a grinder to give it the appropriate shape.

5. Using sandpaper, the product should be sanded. Naturally, polishing is also required.

6. Sharpening and grinding of the blade. This action is performed using a machine and sandpaper.

7. The final stage is the polishing of the product. For this, felt and a special paste are taken.

Combat knives and ordinary household products are produced in this way.

Features of manufacturing a product from a file

Now it is necessary to consider the production process using other materials. For example, you will learn how to make a knife from a file. In principle, this process is practically no different from the instructions already given here. However, it has its own characteristics.

First of all, know that a file knife will turn out to be strong enough and of high quality if everything is done correctly. For example, it is necessary to harden the workpiece so that it does not break or crumble.

It is very important to remember to leave the metal. Thus, you will relieve the internal stress in the workpiece, which can lead to its damage. In order for the future knife to be smooth and beautiful, an etching procedure is also needed. Pre-sharpening of the product can be done using a machine. But finishing should be done with ordinary sandpaper.

How to harden the workpiece?

From what to make a knife, you already know. Now we should consider the sequence of the hardening procedure. So, first you need to thoroughly warm the workpiece at a temperature of 600-700 degrees. Hardening time - 4-6 hours. You can heat the product in the oven, in the oven or even on gas stove. However, the latter option requires the construction of a special structure above the burner, with the help of which the temperature will be maintained.

The future knife should cool down together with the oven. Periodically during hardening, you can sprinkle the product with salt. After cooling, it is necessary to temper the metal. This procedure is very simple. It is necessary to place the workpiece in the oven, heated to 200 degrees and leave it there for an hour and a half. The knife should also cool down there. After that, the hardening process will be completed.

As you can see, building a knife at home is not so difficult.

Etching Features

To carry out the procedure, you will need:

  • Knife preparation.
  • A container in which the liquid will be poured. In this case, the workpiece must be placed in this vessel.
  • Regular table salt.
  • Nail polish (color doesn't matter).
  • A tool that women use to remove manicure from their nails. It will be required in order to subsequently process the knife.
  • Charger for mobile phone.

In principle, all this can be found at home. So the procedure will not be difficult and lengthy. Please note that the process itself is quite rapid. Therefore, choose a deep container.

It should be noted that this procedure is necessarily carried out if you want to get a beautiful pattern on the knife.

Features of sharpening the finished product

This process is very important and requires some skill. Otherwise, you can simply ruin the workpiece or contribute to its breakage, the appearance of irregularities on the blade. Rough grinding should be done with a machine. This will save you time. However, don't overdo it.

Finishing must be done carefully. It is best to use an ordinary grindstone for this and carry out the entire procedure manually. After sharpening, the blade is polished with a special paste and felt.

What to make a knife from, we examined. But the procedure has a number of nuances that should be considered. The tips below will help you make quality product which will actually be used.

1. If there are small bumps or burrs, then process it with a file.

2. In order not to injure yourself during the installation of the handle, wrap the blade with electrical tape.

3. When choosing a material, try to pay attention to its evenness and the presence of microcracks. This can greatly affect the quality of the future product.

4. Blade slopes must be pulled out very carefully.

5. If you decide to choose a tree for the handle, then you can use a regular parquet board.

6. Manufacturing work this product is quite noisy. Therefore, it is advisable to carry it out in the garage, and not in the apartment. In addition, work clothes must be worn.

Now you know how to make a good knife at home. Good luck!
