A wall clock is a very practical interior detail. In the kitchen, they make it possible to keep track of the time without being distracted from cooking and not turning on the phone for this (especially since your hands can be in flour, oil or something else during cooking). Located in the room, they allow you to quickly find out the time without going into your pocket for a mobile phone. Eco-style lovers can make a clock out of wood with their own hands.

Why a wooden clock is good

Wood is a special material, items made from it have a number of advantages:

  1. Naturalness.
  2. Low cost(provided that the product is made by hand, because processing by a master is often quite expensive, especially if it is an individual order).
  3. Originality. Many people like to consider interior items from natural wood, however, not everyone dares to keep such things in their home.

A clock made from juniper or other medicinal tree will disinfect the air. To do this, they do not need to be varnished. The look will be more natural if you walk thoroughly with the sandpaper on the surface.

If you make a clock from a saw cut with your own hands, you can leave a layer of bark. This will give the product a more natural look.

How to choose a tree

The first step is to decide on the type. Will it be linden, soft enough and easy to process, hard oak or medicinal juniper? You can choose what is easier to get or buy, and then stain it to match the desired look.

After choosing the type, you should find suitable material... In this case, there are several possible options:

  1. You can buy a ready-made saw cut at a sawmill, in souvenir or specialized stores, it is also possible via the Internet.
  2. Make it yourself, if you have a suitable stump or block, a chainsaw and the ability to use it.
  3. Wait until the annual sanitation is carried out and ask the workers to saw off the desired piece. Or take a whole block of wood from them and continue to act in accordance with clause 2.

How to prepare material

Before making a clock from wood with your own hands, you should spend time getting ready for work. After the material is found, it should be left in a dry place for two weeks to dry. This is not necessary if the saw cut was bought in a store, but even a tree purchased from a sawmill may be damp. If the material was taken from freshly sawn trees, the moisture level in it is many times higher than the permissible one. Such a blank, not pre-dried, should not be used.

If you neglect to dry the wood, cracks can form in the finished watch. In the worst case, the saw cut will split, and all the work done will be ruined, you will have to start all over again.

Materials and tools

There is nothing difficult in making a clock from wood with your own hands if you have quality raw materials and tools. What you need to prepare before starting work:

  1. Dry saw cut.
  2. Clock mechanism (you can disassemble old ones or buy cheap ones).
  3. Paint or a burner (if the numbers are planned not to be drawn, but to be burned out).
  4. Scissors.
  5. Electrical tape or paper
  6. Hot glue gun.
  7. Fine sandpaper or sander.
  8. Hammer and chisel.

You can avoid the unpleasant situation when, in the process of work, it suddenly turns out that something is missing, if you make a list of what you need in advance and check with it.

How to make a clock from wood with your own hands

In order not to complicate your life by sanding the saw cut or preparing the dial after the mechanism is installed, it is important to follow the correct sequence of actions:

  1. Drill a hole for the arrows in the center of the saw cut.
  2. Use a chisel and hammer to make a recess for the mechanism on the back side.
  3. Sand the dial and groove with sandpaper or a sander.
  4. Install the mechanism, attach it with electrical tape and fix the box in which it is located with a heat gun.
  5. Draw or burn out numbers on the dial.
  6. Install arrows.
  7. Install the mount from the back so that the clock can be hung on the wall.

Having spent not too much time and effort, you can make a clock out of wood with your own hands. An item made by hand in a single copy looks much more interesting than a mass-produced product.

Variety of wooden clocks

A saw cut clock is one of the simplest options. By analogy with them, it can be made not from a transverse, but from a longitudinal die. The product will turn out irregular shape, therefore, it is important to select the material so that the longitudinal cut is of a beautiful shape.

There are many options for how to make a beautiful clock from wood. Wall-mounted, do-it-yourself, made for yourself or as a gift, they will delight their owners for a long time.

Possible design options for wooden clocks:

  1. Cut out furniture board the basis of the desired shape.
  2. Make non-standard designations for numbers. For example, in the form of coins or wooden balls. You can do without numbers and their designations altogether.
  3. Take a lot of thin dies or wooden rulers, fasten them so that you get a volumetric circle with a thickness equal to the short side of the dice. You will get an original dial.
  4. You can use birch bark as a dial, stretched in a frame of beautiful branches peeled from bark.

Craftsmen can make more complex wood clocks with their own hands.

Mechanism drawings can be found on the Internet at specialized resources. In order to create such models, one must have certain experience and skills. More simple options described above can be done by anyone with such a desire and a little patience.

The clock in the kitchen is the main clock in the house, because it is needed both during cooking and during gathering of all household members on their own business. They can also decorate the interior and demonstrate the taste of the hostess, so you should choose them deliberately. Today we will tell you how to choose a clock for the kitchen using 6 tips and 40 photo examples. Well, for those who like to do needlework, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with a master class on making wall clocks for the kitchen with your own hands, which you will find at the end of the article.

6 tips for choosing a watch

  1. Small kitchen - small clock, large - large

A large clock will clutter up the space, but in a spacious kitchen, or it will show itself in all its glory and will be visible from any end of the room.

Average and small hours in large kitchen Will "get lost" and will not look so impressive. But in small room will be both convenient and compact.

  • The universal dial size is 33-36 cm in diameter as in the photo below.

  1. "Duty" hours must be quartz

A mechanical watch is timeless classic, they are durable and are valued more than quartz ones due to a more complex mechanism and manual setting when assembling. However, they have significant disadvantages - high cost, small choice designs, inaccuracy of the course and the need for timely winding. Agree that it will not be very convenient to regularly monitor the work of the "duty" kitchen clock and wind it up, especially if it is wall-mounted.

Battery-powered quartz watches are more affordable and more accurate, do not require winding, and are silent. And the design range in this category is much larger today. You can choose from classic models, such as a pendulum, to the most modern ones, including electronic ones.

  • However, if you choose a watch in the dining room or prioritize not ease of use, but beauty, durability and chic, then choose mechanical models. Most often they have very high quality cases, excellent finish and classic "functions" of a beat, a pendulum or a cuckoo.
  1. Pay attention to watches with additional features

When choosing a clock for the kitchen, think about what additional functions you may need:

  • If you need them primarily for cooking, then get a small electronic or regular clock with a timer as in the photo below.

  • Pay attention to the weather station clock if you grow or have, say, wooden floors and kitchen set... A hygrometer and thermometer can help you control humidity and air temperature.
  • Displaying the date and day of the week is simple but useful in Everyday life function.
  1. The best watch for classic cuisine- wooden, with a round dial and Roman numerals
  • For classic interiors kitchens (in style, baroque, empire, etc.), it is better to choose a wooden clock with a round dial, but not necessarily with a round case. After all, for example, watch cases with a traditional pendulum are rectangular or elliptical.
  • As for the numbers, the most traditional will be Roman, but beautiful Arabic will not spoil it.
  • The case and the dial of the watch in classic style preferable from natural wood, rather than from common MDF or wood-like plastic. At the same time, for elegant and strict classics, for example, in a palace style, the tree should be polished, and for Provence and shabby chic styles - aged. The rest of the details (dial, hands, etc.) can be metal in the color of antique bronze or gold.
  • For a dining room in a classic style or for a very spacious kitchen, you can choose not a wall clock, but a grandfather clock with a pendulum, weights, a strike, or with a sideboard and a bar.

  1. The best clock for the kitchen in modern style- laconic but original

V modern interiors(, etc.) the clock can be laconic or, conversely, complex, but in any case original design due to the texture, color, shape of the dial and case, as well as unusual divisions and hands. Modern clocks can be made of plastic, wood, and metal.

  • We do not recommend buying a clock for the kitchen without divisions - it looks interesting, but it is inconvenient to track the cooking time or to navigate how many minutes are left before leaving the house.

In the slider, you can see a photo of a clock in modern kitchen interiors.

  1. Place the clock in such a place that it can be seen both during cooking and during a meal.

Where is the most convenient place to put or hang a kitchen clock? The following places are most often suitable:

  • Above dining table or above the bar;
  • Above a door, arch or entrance;
  • Above the hood (if it has a visor or allows you to hang the device high);
  • There is a headset on the shelf (but farther / higher from the stove and sink).

Try to select a location so that direct sunlight does not fall on the unit during the day. In the next selection of photos, some examples of the placement of clocks in the kitchen are presented.

Master Class

And finally, we present a master class on how to make a wall clock for the kitchen with your own hands.

Step 1. Prepare any basis for making the dial. It can be anything: wood, plate, vinyl record, cardboard, polyurethane foam socket, or even an old colander. The main thing is that the workpiece fits in size with the hands of the clockwork and a hole can be drilled in it to fasten it.

Step 2. Mark the center of the dial and make a hole in it using a screwdriver drill (at low speeds so as not to damage the workpiece) or an awl. The drill diameter must match the diameter of the screw in the watch movement.

Step 3. If the material requires processing and decoration, then this must be done before installing the mechanism. Once the background of the dial is ready and dried, you will need to draw divisions or numbers on it (best with a stencil to get it neat). However, if you wish, you can do without them. At the end of the drawing, the entire dial must be coated with matte acrylic varnish on water based in 2 layers. Then the whole decor will become more wear-resistant and tolerant to wet cleaning.

Step 4. Now is the time to install the clockwork (you can buy it separately or remove it from an old / cheap watch). To do this, separate the mechanism from the second, minute and hour hands and insert it into the prepared hole on the seamy side of the dial. Then, from the front of the watch, we put the nuts on the screw, the hour, minute and last of all the second hand (if any).

Step 5. Hooray! The clock for the kitchen is ready, all that remains is to turn the hands to make sure that nothing interferes with their rotation, insert the battery and hang the product on the wall.

But such photo-ideas for the design and decor of homemade kitchen clocks can be taken into account.

So interesting and modern design you definitely won't find a watch in a store. Simple construction from readily available materials. If your guests see this watch in your room, they will definitely pay attention to it, and they certainly will not tell you that they saw the same in a nearby store.
The materials I took for the watch:

  • Wooden board 35 x 35 cm, 18 mm thick (hardware store).
  • A piece of plywood 3 mm thick (hardware store).
  • 13 mm nails or self-tapping screws.
  • Clock mechanism (can be taken from a boring watch).
  • Yellow paint.
  • Black marker.
The woodworking tools I used:
  • Hand saw.
  • Screwdriver drill.
  • Hammer.
  • Pliers.
  • Ruler.
  • Right angle ruler.
  • Bit.
  • Sandpaper.

Sawing the board.

We take our board and decide on the size of the future watches. We draw and saw off the base with a hacksaw or hand saw... 18 mm board will cut well and it is advisable to use a saw with fine teeth so that the edges are even and a minimum mechanical restoration after sawing off.

Making squares

Further, at one of the corners of the base, I drew rectangles 10 x 5 cm. They drank them with a step. Then I cut these rectangles into 5 x 5 cm squares.
Now you need to sand all the squares, removing the burrs, and making the surface smooth.

We proceed to milling the hole for the clock mechanism.
We take the watch mechanism and attach it to the center of our base. We outline with a pencil. Next, we mill the recess. I used a wood router bit fixed in a screwdriver. You can use a chisel and make a depression with it.
During work, we try on a groove for the mechanism. If everything is fine in the tramline, we drill a hole for the shaft exit, on which the arrows will be put on. After all the work done, we will sand the base with sandpaper so that it becomes smooth.

Watch assembly

Before proceeding directly to the assembly of the watch, you must first prepare 18 small jumpers - connectors. Take a piece of plywood and use a hacksaw to cut 18 0.7 x 4 cm jumpers.
We arrange the base, we lay out our squares in an almost chaotic order. It is necessary to arrange the squares so that the plywood jumpers are practically invisible. On the reverse side, respectively, we connect everything with jumpers and nails.

Watch painting

For painting, I used spray paint. We hold the balloon at a distance of 20 cm and spray on the watch, on one side. A little later, and the paint dries very quickly, turn the clock over and spray the paint on the other side. That's it, the foundation is almost ready.

Draw numbers

I took a black permanent marker and just drew the numbers. There is another option - print the numbers on a computer, cut and paste. So you can do that if you like.

Watch hanger

I screwed in 2 self-tapping screws so that there was something to hang the clock on. And I tied a rope to the self-tapping screws so that you could hang it on a nail in the wall or a self-tapping screw.
