Is it worth it to make the holes for the faucets yourself? How to cut a hole in different types of sinks

It is impossible to call the absence of special holes for mixers or taps in sinks, which are produced in our time, a marriage, this is just a necessity. The fact is that the technologies for the installation of such products imply several options for the location of the sink itself. The modern assortment offers several standard diameters for plumbing, so it is rather difficult to guess in advance with the size. It is better not to guess again and not to risk, but to figure out how to make a hole in the stainless steel sink under the mixer yourself.

Varieties of modern sinks

There are two main options in greatest demand today. kitchen sinks- products made of stainless steel and ceramics. Manufacturers are in no hurry to make holes in them, leaving this work entirely on the shoulders of sellers and end consumers.

Important! If you wish, you can arrange directly in the store to drill a hole. required size... The cost of such manipulation is quite acceptable, you just have to indicate the place, diameter, and make a payment. As a result, you get ready product with designed places for the installation of mixers and taps.

It would seem that the problem has been solved, but in practice situations often arise that completely do not coincide with the plans of consumers. For example, when ordering a kitchen custom sizes, or himself kitchen equipment, if the owner of the house is left-handed, the hole in her new sink is located on the right side, which is incredibly inconvenient for her.

Before you cut a hole in the sink for the mixer, first install it, take a good look, and only then decide where to make places for the nests. If you nevertheless decide to do everything yourself, then use the following useful recommendations:

  1. All manipulations with the product should be carried out immediately before its installation in a stationary place - this will prevent premature damage and deformation of the object.
  2. The sink should be installed horizontally on a wooden base, then drill a hole with a special drill.
  3. In the case of using a punch and a hammer, it is enough to manually punch the fixed bowl with special nozzles, pre-selected for the diameter of the tap or mixer holes in the new sink.
  4. If you want to use a specially designed punch, please note that it operates according to the extrusion method. Typically, such a device consists of two nozzles and a threaded pin, a press washer and a tap. It is enough to replace the pin with outside, screw on the washer, tighten-press.
  5. The use of a special drill involves the use of a tapered drill, which works according to the simplest principle.
  6. When buying a mixer with large-diameter glasses, it becomes necessary to prepare a special seat. This problem can be solved in two ways - you can order a nest from a store or drill several holes around a circle with a smaller diameter.

How to make a hole in a ceramic sink with your own hands?

It is quite easy to make a hole in a ceramic sink for a mixer yourself. The work includes the following stages:

  • Make a mark at the intended hole, then drill.

Important! Such a seemingly simple manipulation in practice causes many problems for inexperienced people. Here you cannot use a drill with a victorious stand, because instead of drilling, it peels or shears the material. A metal drill has proven itself excellent here, but for it you will need a drill with a minimum speed, preferably a manual one.

  • Run the tool over the baffles between the holes several times.

Important! Remember that the ceramic can quickly heat up during drilling, so this must be controlled. It is better to drill with a thin drill, work around the entire perimeter of the future nest.

  • Use an electric soldering iron to cut the strokes, knock out the plugs with a hammer.
  • Use a jigsaw to cut the material to make the edges perfectly straight.
  • Grind round abrasive nozzle the circumference of the nest. If you don't have one at hand, you can use a round file.

Important! Some modern bowls already have special marks on which it is enough to strike with a hammer aimed to punch a hole. But it is recommended to do this as carefully as possible so as not to destroy the material.

How to make a hole for a faucet in a stainless steel sink?

There are several proven options for how to cut a hole in a stainless steel mixer sink. It is impossible to make such holes in the already installed plumbing, since it can crack due to the support on the countertop. If possible, rent or buy a special cutter to make your job easier.

Prepare the following tools:

  • Mounting tape.
  • Marker.
  • Round file.
  • Hammer.
  • Kerner.

The instructions for making a hole look like this:

  1. Before starting work, the sink should be turned upside down so that it rests on the table surface with all edges.
  2. Make a circle of the required shape and size from the mounting tape, attach it to the chosen place, circle with a marker.
  3. Mark the center so that it is easier to punch a hole with a center punch.
  4. Aim the point of the center punch in the center of the circle made of mounting tape, punch the starting hole with smooth tapping movements.
  5. Extend the starting hole with a round file to the previously marked dimensions.
  6. Sand the edges of the saw cut carefully to get the required diameter.
  7. Seal the edges of the fresh cut.
  8. You can install a sink.

Trauma care is full of people who thought they didn't need insurance. And the shops are full of sinks that don't have holes for installing a mixer. And not a single washbasin with two holes to accommodate two mixers, one for each hole. This is understandable. Why install two mixers in one sink?

And if from time to time it seems to you that you are the only hole in the sink and you feel lonely on an island bounded by its outer, smooth ceramic edges, then who will understand this and who can be told about it, counting at least that you listen, let alone sympathy and understanding?

It seems to me that two holes in the sink for the mixer will be too many, and neither will be too small. Therefore, today we will talk about how to drill only one hole in the sink. In a ceramic sink that does not have a single hole for installing a mixer from the very day of its birth, if only sinks have such days, birthdays.

Some people do not understand the importance of having a hole in the sink for a faucet and consider any text containing a lot of the words "hole" to be gibberish. Therefore, I will try to write in a simpler way, without overusing words like "hole" and "sink".

Where to start drilling a sink
and how to drill a sink

To drill the sink, you need ceramic drills and a tungsten carbide core bit for cutting round holes with a diameter of 33 mm. For drilling, it is better to use a hammer drill rather than a drill. And not because the punch has a stronger blow. We will not use a blow at all. At the puncher less speed rotation, but more weight in kg. and power in watts. But if you do not have a punch, then of course take a drill, but slow down, otherwise there will be no sense from the crown.

Marking and drilling

Start by marking, the smartest thing you can do is decide where the hole will be for the faucet to be installed in. Once you've made your decision, use a marker and draw a dot where you want it.

Now load the chuck with the ceramic drill clamped in it into the hammer drill and start drilling. Need to do through hole... The hole is needed so that you can insert the drill that comes with the crown into it.

The ceramic used in the sink is very durable. Its strength is comparable to that of porcelain stoneware. If you have had to drill or cut porcelain stoneware, then you will understand me. Porcelain stoneware material is very durable but fragile. If you act carelessly, it can easily split. Therefore, the hole in the ceramic sink should be drilled carefully and without haste.

First you need to drill a very narrow hole in the center, and then expand it with another drill. Use a 6mm drill bit to get started. Then go to 8 or 10. While drilling, constantly cool down the drilling site. cold water pouring from a bottle or other container.

When you're done with the center hole, start drilling with a crown. The first 2-3 mm. ceramics can be drilled without much difficulty, but then you will be disappointed in the possibilities of the crown. The crown will rotate on the ceramic surface without causing any visible damage or deepening by a fraction of a millimeter.

For the crown to continue drilling, it needs help. This is how it is done. Take a thin ceramic drill and drill shallow holes around the entire circumference of the already selected crown. Now the teeth of the crown will have something to catch on and then things will go faster. As soon as the crown deepens and begins to slide again on a smooth surface, do the whole operation again.

Drill sharpening for ceramics

Drills for ceramics dull very quickly. The tip is made of a very hard alloy, so they cannot be sharpened on a regular abrasive disc or metal cutting disc. But if you install a diamond segmental disc on a grinder, then you can cope with sharpening a drill for ceramics. Many do not know, but such diamond discs perfectly cut steel, aluminum structures or cast iron.

Answering Dmitry Panin's question (http: //site/forum/viewtopic.php? T = 1370), I did not delve into the details of terminology, since this would not change the essence of the answer. But, preparing the material for the Master Class, I can no longer use the terms so freely. Therefore, let's start with the classification of sinks.

Depending on the material used in their manufacture, there are on the market:

1. stainless steel sinks. Traditional material - food grade stainless steel.

2. ceramic sinks, which are made of refractory clay or, as Blanco does, porcelain stoneware (kaolin).

3. sinks from granite chips. They are a composite, 70-80% consisting of granite chips ( quartz sand) and acrylic resins and pigments. Granite composite is particularly durable artificial material... The strength characteristics of these sinks allow them to withstand without consequences the fall of a steel disc weighing 800 grams.

Therefore, the speech in Dmitry's letter is, of course, not about a sink made of granite chips (note: "fragranite" is trademark from Franke for granite composite sinks), and about the ceramic sink. Sometimes this confusion in terms leads to the very cracks during installation, since making holes in ceramic sinks requires a specialist to perform other actions than those recommended for granite granite sinks. So, in order.

The easiest and most versatile way to make holes for two types of sink is to use diamond core bit(photo 1). But at the same time, of course, it is assumed that the master has it. If it is not there, then it is precisely here that you should pay attention to the difference in the ways of performing the work. Further advice is given in accordance with Franke's recommendation for granite granite sinks and Blanco's recommendation for ceramic sinks.

According to experience, in a sink made of granite chips there are always loose cast plugs, which should be knocked out at the time of installation (photo 2). As a rule, they are already marked with a colored circle on the front surface of the sink.

First of all, the sink should be freely installed in the cutout in the worktop (photo 3). In this case, the elements fixing the sink to the countertop are not fixed.

Next, install a suitable tool and knock out the cast plugs with a strong hammer blow down (Fig. 1). An 8mm punch or round steel bar is the right tool in this case, not a screwdriver! Please note that the plug must only be punched from the front (top) side.

Align the edges of the hole with a rasp (photo 4 and 5).

When preparing for making holes in a ceramic sink, keep in mind immediately that manufacturers recommend doing something with the sink only when it has reached room temperature... In no case should you make holes in the sink, which was brought in from the cold. Unsecured ceramic sinks require careful handling. Until the end of the installation of the sink in the countertop and installation drain fittings it is not recommended to allow sharp blows on it.

To make a hole in ceramic sinks, mark the center and draw a circle (photo 6).

Along the perimeter of the circle, holes are carefully drilled with a thin drill at a distance of 4 mm from each other (photo 7). It is best to use the factory-prepared places on the back of the sink for this (photo 8). To avoid the formation of cracks and chips, before knocking out the hole, install the sink in the cutout of the worktop or otherwise firmly fix it.

Then, from the front of the sink, without applying significant force, knock out the drilled disc with a punch or a round steel bar (photo 9).

If there is a need to expand the existing hole in the ceramic sink, then draw a circle of the required radius with the same center around the existing hole. On the front side of the sink, make frequent cuts (at a distance of 4 mm from each other) along the entire circumference (photo 10). Using a chisel or punch, lightly remove the remaining parts (Photo 11). Then use a rasp to line up the edges of the hole.

Fulfillment of these simple requirements will allow you to avoid both cracks and save time and nerves in finding the culprit, buying and reworking the sink. And, absolutely banal advice, immediately hire a qualified specialist.

Bought inset sink type "granite" with a wing. Today we have a kitchen installed. There was no tap hole in the sink. The installer refused to punch it. As a result, we are now sitting without water in the kitchen!
Does anyone know how to make a hole like this for a faucet?

Return the sink and buy another. How did you buy it without a hole ?!

21-11-2007, 21:42

The sink can be designed for use wall mixer, then the hole is not needed.
Or maybe a hole in the tabletop is supposed - we have it, but we have a sink for under-table mounting, is it different for you?
Does it have any bumpers?

Buy a special guiljatin from the store, or draw a circle on the sink that is smaller than the base of the mixer and go around the circle with a thin drill. Drill the holes as close to each other as possible, then punch with a chisel, between the holes.

Do not frighten the person, what does the guillotine have to do with it? What to cut off with it ?? Maybe the clamp was meant? Only she is not needed.
If you really decide to drill (although why is it necessary: either change the sink to another of the required design, or drill the countertop already), then buy a core drill (hollow cylindrical shape) of the required diameter. In one pass, you will do everything, without any small holes, with which it is unlikely that it will work out neatly without skill.

There, at the sink (meaning BLANCO), a place has been allocated for a hole for a mixer. It is not specially punched so that the sink can be installed with a wing both to the left and to the right. (respectively, these places are highlighted symmetrically on both sides)
Those. I understand that you don't need to draw anything, there is a green sticker in the place where you need to pierce.

If this can be done with a core drill, then that's great, we'll try to buy it tomorrow. And we can just beat this place with a chisel ?! Will it be knocked out?

22-11-2007, 09:55

When we bought a sink, we were offered in the store to immediately punch a hole for 200 rubles.

22-11-2007, 10:15

In Blanco sinks, the tap hole is simply knocked out. In these places, the stone is specially made thinner. But in a place not intended for a mixer, I do not advise trying to drill a hole

22-11-2007, 10:45

Of course, if there are places for holes, then no drill is needed, the instructions should be used. told how to knock it out.

22-11-2007, 11:11

we made this hole immediately upon purchase. the current was asked how the sink would stand.

22-11-2007, 20:56

There should be two places for the holes, depending on which direction the wing is turned and then knocked out.
and yet, they are marked with stickers

The only question was how to knock out! What kind of tool so as not to break the sink.
Incidentally, I learned that a hole can be knocked out in the Blanco service center. Costs 200r. This is in the district of Lesnaya.

Does anyone know how to make a hole like this for a faucet?

Here is your question. Everyone answers to it.

In general, of course, you have a strange installer. Ours installed the sink and punched that hole without a hitch.

Thanks to all!

Development of events.

Friday morning. I handed over the sink to the nearest store to make a hole. They said it would cost 300r.
Friday evening. The master's call to the mobile phone: "I didn't do a damn thing! I didn't have time! Now only on Monday!"
Saturday morning. I go to the store, pick up the sink. Heavy, dog ...
Saturday evening. The sink is in place in the kitchen. I'm near. In the hands of a drill d = 10 with a victorious tip .. php? U = 72)) to confirm the operation.
A minute later. Confirmation received. Hit! The hole is ready. Though not round. A dozen more blows weaker, tapping with a hammer, grinding with a file. There is a hole.

Sunday evening. The sink is installed on silicone sealant, the mixer is installed and connected, drain, overflow, etc. - too. I sit on the floor, sorting out all sorts of pieces of paper from the kitchen: instructions for installation, operation, warranty cards, etc.
- Here are the leaders, - I say, - in Russian they could not write!
I read English to my wife (and myself) out loud. Washing installation guide ... Point five: "in some cases the following operations may be necessary." A sticker is drawn, a drill, a hammer, it is written that you have to hit the sticker several times ... In short, exactly the sequence that I followed is given!
They laughed for a long time. It is sometimes helpful to read the instructions.
