Tool for cutting glass bottles. Bottle cutter for glass making

Empty glass bottles have long been involved in the creation artistic compositions(). But even more scope for creativity opens up if you learn how to cut them. A simple tool will help with this.

Device. Consists of a base 1 , movable stop 2 and sidewalls 3 (all wooden) that center the bottles 4 . Cuts loop 5 from a nichrome thread (d 0.3-0.5 mm) fixed on two nails with wires 6 . And they are connected to a regulated power supply. 7 , which is suitable for a battery charger or a laboratory autotransformer. After tuning, the wire should glow red or straw. cutting technology. Having fixed the emphasis at the desired distance (depending on what we cut - the bottom or the neck), turn on the voltage. We rotate the bottle in such a way that the wire, adjacent to the glass, warms it up as evenly as possible. After a while, the cut off part falls off. After cooling, round the sharp edges with fine sandpaper. The quality of the cut depends on how exactly perpendicular the loop is to the longitudinal axis of the bottle.

By the way
The process can be accelerated by wiping the well-heated glass along the cut line with a wet rag (with the power supply turned off!).

Application. The simplest things are obtained from an ordinary white half-liter - a watering can, a glass, a pipe, a bowl or an ashtray (on the picture). Figured and colored bottles will give a more interesting "harvest".

I cut off the "funnel" from the screw bottles and assembled a New Year's street garland. To do this, he punched two holes in each plug, passed the wire, soldered the painted light bulbs. Then I screwed small glass watering cans into corks - they made the garland heavier, preventing the wind from swinging.

Crafts from cut glass bottles

A bottle glass cutter is a great tool for those who like to make something with their own hands. Many things can be made from a glass bottle: a transparent glass, a vase self made, candlestick, ceiling lamp, chandelier and much more.

But how do you cut it? All the more neat. Of course, you can cut the bottle with a thread or a heated wire, but the cut will not be very beautiful. And given that the composition of the glass different bottles differs - then a good repeatability of the cut is not to be expected.

And then the moment came when I needed to cut several bottles in half. In this article I will try to explain how to make a glass cutter for bottles from what is at hand.

I wanted to make the glass cutter universal and therefore, having measured several bottles, I took the distance between the supports - 12 cm (with the possibility of increasing to 17 cm). This is enough to cut almost all bottles, from 0.33 liters to 1 liter.

As a basis, I chose the usual cutting board(14 by 25 cm). In addition, I needed 4 furniture wheels, a small piece of cable channel, a blade from an ordinary glass cutter and a few pieces of wood.

It is desirable to choose wheels with a rubber surface, a diameter of up to 4 centimeters. The cable channel must be with a removable cover (25 cm long and 2 cm wide). You will also need some glue, some screws and some rubber feet.

Here are the dimensions wooden parts:

  • Base 25×14 cm;
  • Limiter 11 × 4 x 2 cm;
  • The bar on which the glass cutter rides 25 × 4 x 2 cm;
  • wooden lath from which the glass cutter arm 25 × 1 x 2 cm will be made.

All holes in the manufacture of the glass cutter were made by hand, but if you have the opportunity, it is better to use drilling machine, for better perpendicularity. I pinned lower part cable channel for three screws, in principle this is enough, but for greater stability, you can add two more. Then I made four holes in the top cover of the cable channel (its length is 8 cm). I deliberately made them off-center so that the bolt heads between the upper and lower halves do not collide.

In order to provide mobility to the lever on which the glass cutter will be mounted, I decided to fasten it with two long screws that will work like loops. Cut two equal pieces from the rail, 3 x 2 x 1 cm, stand back about 7 mm from the edge and drill a hole along it. Lay the pieces on a flat surface and mark the drilling locations using the cable duct cover as a template. Then drill four screw holes.

Now you need to attach the knife to the lever. I tried to avoid drilling and used the knife as is. It is held in place by a small notch and a screw that holds it in place. In the future, I slightly changed the angle of the blade for greater convenience. How exactly, you can see in the photo.

First I attached two wooden block directly to the cable channel, but later abandoned this. Because of plastic cover insufficiently rigid and strong, and also due to the fact that the two parts have less bending strength - the lever was not very stable. So I added an extra piece of wood between them for more stability and strength.

Then I started gluing the pieces together. I used epoxy, but you can use regular wood glue and you won't have to wait long for it to dry.

While the parts are glued together, drill holes for the wheels. I used very short screws so they don't stick out from the other side of the board. The last two rows of holes are needed in order to be able to rearrange one pair of cutting wheels in the future big bottles.

Then I fixed the wheels and cable channel, added 4 rubber feet for more stability.

The AlexGyver channel created a video on how to make a small tool for precise cutting of cans, bottles and other glass containers. Moreover, if you use this machine carefully, then at the output you can get an almost perfect cut.

To begin with, we need a piece of lining about 30 centimeters long and a bar 19 × 19 millimeters in cross section. Using a hacksaw, you need to cut out a part about 40, 45 millimeters long from it. The resulting piece of wood is able to fit quite tightly into the groove of the lining and move freely. As you may have guessed, you will need a glass cutter, which will be fixed in a 40 × 40 mm beam at a slight angle. And he will be attached to the lining with a metal corner. Position the glass cutter, mark its position on the bar with a marker. Along this line, respectively, at an angle, it will be necessary to drill a bar, therefore, move the drilling point to the front.
The diameter of the glass cutter is approximately 9 and a half mm, and in order to hold it tighter in the hole, I will drill with a 9 mm drill. I decided to disassemble the glass cutter so as not to damage it while driving it into the hole. You need to hammer it to about this depth. I made a small mistake when I hammered the glass cutter into a bar, so it’s not very convenient for me to screw the head back on. Keep this in mind if you do.
Now, with the help of self-tapping screws, fasten the corner to the bar. Cut off the excess. With a ruler, draw a long line in the center of the lining groove. Drill away from the edge big hole. Using a jigsaw, make a long slot in the groove of the lining. Widen the gap to fit the M3 bolt. On the trim of the tin, mark 2 holes at a distance of 25 millimeters. Drill holes and remove the sharp edges of the chips with a larger diameter drill. Mark and drill the same 2 holes in the 19x19 bar.
Next, we need 2 lambs for the M3 bolt, 2 M3 bolts 40 mm long, 2 washers for the M3 bolt, a bar and a piece tin can. Let's assemble the structure.
The result is a movable structure that can be easily fixed with the help of lambs. Now it's time to attach the bar with the glass cutter to the lining.
Next, look at the video from 4 minutes.

How to cut a glass bottle straight? glass cutter attachment

I found a way to cut a glass bottle evenly. Maybe someone will come in handy for the New Year holidays.

The cutting principle itself is simple, we cut, as usual, with a glass cutter, which is available in every home, if not, then you can buy it for mere pennies in a hardware store.
Any glass cutter is suitable, even the cheapest, Chinese.
But just like that, it’s impossible to cut evenly with your hands, because to make a cut on the surface round bottle, and even exactly, problematic.
To do even cut, you will have to make a simple device, which even a housewife can do.
We will not crush water in a mortar, but let's move on to a step-by-step analysis of this device.
To make the fixture, we need two boards measuring 150 x 100 mm, 20 mm thick.
We give one plank a bottle-shaped shape, first we mark it, then we cut it out.
We fasten the boards together at a right angle. We do this with PVA glue and screws. First, we lubricate the surfaces of the boards to be joined with glue, then we press the boards against each other, and then we twist them with screws.

The bottle-shaped plank will be vertical and will serve as the basis for attaching the glass cutter.
The rectangular plank is horizontal and the bottle will be placed on it.
You will need two clamps for cutting. With the help of one clamp, we fasten the fixture to the edge of the table. If we cut the bottle in the workshop, then it is easier to screw the fixture to the workbench with screws, then the clamp will not be needed.
We fasten the glass cutter with the second clamp.
Depending on the place of the cut on the bottle, we also choose the place of fastening on the bottle-shaped plank, we can fasten it both from above and from the side.

In this embodiment, the glass cutter is fixed on the side in the picture. For a more elastic effect of the clamp on the glass cutter, we put an eraser under it (a regular stationery eraser for erasing lines from a simple pencil on a sheet of paper).
We install the bottle on the fixture, press its surface to the cutting part of the glass cutter, turn the bottle around its axis. The glass cutter cuts the bottle in a circle.
But just like that, a cut bottle cannot be divided into two parts.
First you need to spill the bottle at the place of the cut hot water, then cold. Next, divide the bottle into two parts with your hands.
When the bottle is cut off, we take sandpaper and grind the sharp edge of the cut so that we don’t injure our hands when using the halves of the bottle.

I often use a bottle cutter assembled by myself. The design is based on a sliding platform and two furniture conveyors.

bottle cutter turned out to be universal: it can be used to cut from a small bottle to a large glass jar.

Materials for the manufacture of a bottle cutter.

Making a bottle cutter

Basically, it was assembled from simple unnecessary things: wooden planks and sticks, except for two transporters bought at a hardware store for moving furniture and an old glass cutter.

I thought for a long time about how to assemble a sliding platform, and eventually settled on a simple and very convenient design of two halves. A conveyor is attached to one of them, and the second remains movable until the object to be cut is placed on the conveyor. Further, when cutting the bottle, the hand presses on the conveyor, which, in turn, presses the already stationary part of the platform. But for convenience and maintaining the size of the cut, you can use a simple paper tape that will fix the position of the two halves. I did this when making a candlestick, where I had to cut two identical glass bottles.

In the bottle cutter, I used a simple Soviet glass cutter, which I fixed on a lever made of beech sticks. And when working with long bottles, I add a second conveyor.

How the bottle cutter works

exhibited right size platform, the bottle rests with the bottom against the stopper, we firmly press the lever with the glass cutter against the bottle, rotate the bottle in a circle, while pressing on the lever from above, an incision is formed, which I then tap from the inside of the bottle (so glass jars prick easily). And thick bottles can be split by dipping them in turn in cold and hot water.

In the house, as is customary "For good luck", a lot of dishes are beaten, which are often used. This is especially true for glasses. Their loss can be easily compensated if you make a cutting device with your own hands. empty bottles, which will allow you to make your own glasses of the desired size.

To create bottle cutters for glass making, you will need:

  • Cutting boards section 100 x 25 mm;
  • glass cutter;
  • liquid polyurethane plastic, which has increased strength, wear resistance, high moisture resistance and resistance to weak solvents;
  • bolts ¼” x 2.5”;
  • wing nuts to bolts;
  • epoxy resin;
  • glue for wood;
  • screws;
  • rubber feet.

Step 1: Preparing fixture parts

From scraps of a board with a section of 100 x 25 mm, cut out two pieces of 30 cm, one piece of 7.5 cm and one 7.5 x 3 cm. Sand the prepared parts. Separate the cutting head from the glass cutter and clean it with a file.

Step 2: Assembly of the slider

Apply wood glue to the long end of the shortest section, glue it to a 7.5 cm long section and tighten it with screws. After the glue has dried in the short part of the slider, drill two holes with a diameter of 6 mm with centers shifted relative to the ends by 2.5 and 1.5 cm. Screw two bolts into them.

Step 3: Assembly of the bed

Lubricate one end of a large part with wood glue, glue the same second part vertically to it and tighten it with screws. After the glue has dried, using the holes of the slider as a template, drill two holes with a diameter of 6 mm at its edge in the vertical part of the frame and, shifting by 20 cm, the second pair of holes. Connect the resulting holes with pencil lines, along which cut grooves with a jigsaw to move the slider bolts. Sand down sandpaper cut grooves.

Step 4: Fixture Assembly

Lubricate the bolt holes in the slider with epoxy and insert the bolts into them. Lock the slider with wing nuts approximately 2 ⁄3 of the slot length. Place the fixture vertically, and place a bottle on the slider step to determine the place where the glass cutter is attached. Make sure that in this position, when the bottle is pressed against the frame, the glass cutter cuts the bottle. Fasten the glass cutter with screws at the identified location of its installation on the end of the frame. Remember that the location of its installation depends on the diameter of the bottles used. So assembly is complete!

Step 5: Fixture Painting

After drying epoxy resin unscrew the slider and start painting the slider and the bed of your device with liquid polyurethane. After the polyurethane has dried, for greater stability, screw the rubber feet to the bottom of the bed.

Step 6: Cutting the bottle

Decide on the height of your new glass and fix the slider in the appropriate place. Press the bottle against the bed with the palm of your hand and rotate the bottle one full turn for a continuous cut. Boil water and pour boiling water over the incision. The neck of the bottle will bounce off and the only thing left to do is to clean the sharp edges of the glass with abrasives.

Step 7: Bottle Cup Samples

If you are not satisfied with decorating glasses with one label, then you can wash it off and make frosted patterns on it. The result is an original gift.

Concluding the post, I want to remind you that all work with glass requires accuracy and attention.
