How to understand the Internet is limited. "Connection is limited or missing (Windows XP)" error: how to fix

Perhaps, for experienced users of personal computers, it is no secret that a local network connection is required in order to use the capabilities of the Internet. Often there are situations when it is limited or even disabled.

Causes

There are several reasons for this message to appear. The first reason is if the user's computer is connected to the Internet via LAN and the wire is disconnected. Naturally, there is only one solution to such a problem - connect it to a computer and create a connection to the Internet. The second reason is problems with the operator himself. Such a problem can only be solved if it is detected by the provider (the company providing Internet services), and the type of Internet connection does not matter here. There is another reason, which is a little less common and it is due to improper operation of the network equipment by the subscriber himself (including equipment breakdown).

Solving a pressing problem

In any case, if a message appears stating that the connection to the local network is limited, the first step is to go to "Network Connections". For example, go to the "Start" menu, "Control Panel", then the "Network and Internet" item and find "Local Area Connection" in the list of all connections. Here you need to right-click, and in the context menu that appears, click on the "Status" button. Then you need to go to the "Support" tab, where you click on the "Fix" button. If no malfunctions were found, then you should disable the anti-virus software and firewall, and then repeat the previous manipulations.

Next, you need to check the settings of the Internet protocol TCP / IP. To do this, as in the previous case, you again need to go to the "Properties" of the local network connection and go to the "TCP / IP Internet Protocol" tab. For stable operation, you need to make sure that the following parameters are set: in the "DNS" and "Obtain an IP address" fields, select the "Automatic" item. After that, you need to repeat the first step again.

The last step involves executing some commands in command line. In order to open it, you need to go to the "Start" menu and click on the "Run" button. In the window that appears, the command command is entered, which opens the software necessary for the last manipulations. In modern operating systems, you need to enter the commands: ipconfig / release and press the enter key, then ipconfig / renew and press this key again.

In most cases, these operations help solve an immediate problem. Otherwise, you need to contact the technical support of the provider itself.

We again return to the problem when there is a connection to the Wi-Fi network, but the Internet does not work. That is, Wi-Fi without access to the Internet. It is this connection status that can be seen on a computer with Windows 7. And the inscription "limited" in Windows 8 and Windows 10. The problem is the same, and the solutions are almost the same. This is probably the most popular problem that everyone who uses an Internet connection through a Wi-Fi router faces.

The essence of the problem: after connecting a laptop, computer, smartphone, tablet, TV, or other device to your Wi-Fi network, the Internet does not work. A yellow exclamation mark appears on the computer, next to the Wi-Fi network icon and the inscription "No internet access", or "Limited". On mobile devices, the Internet simply does not work, its sites open, etc.

It turns out that there is a connection to Wi-Fi, but the Internet does not work. On Windows 10, this problem looks exactly the same. One more thing: if the network is not yours, for example, your neighbor’s open Wi-Fi, in a cafe, shop, etc., and after connecting there is no access to the Internet, then in such cases, it is unlikely that you can do something. Most likely, some kind of restriction in the network to which you are connected. Or, your good neighbor simply did not pay for the Internet.

Important! If you have Internet via Wi-Fi without access to the Internet in the process of setting up the router, then read this instruction: There I wrote in detail what router settings you should pay attention to, and how to set up Internet distribution via a Wi-Fi network. As a rule, all settings come down to one thing: correctly configure the router to work with an Internet provider.

It is very important to understand one point. The Wi-Fi network itself is not necessarily access to the Internet. The router can distribute Wi-Fi perfectly and not even be connected to the Internet. For example, via Wi-Fi, you can connect several devices into one local network without internet access. There will be access to the Internet via Wi-Fi, or not, depends on only one thing: whether the Internet is connected to the router, and whether it is configured correctly. I already wrote about this in an article:

Yes, there are times when the Internet on the phone, for example, works from the same network, but not on the laptop. In this case, most likely you need to look for the problem in the laptop settings.

Why is there no access to the Internet via Wi-Fi on a laptop?

I have already written many articles on this subject. (links to some I gave above). If you have such a problem on a laptop or computer (with wifi receiver), then carefully look at the following articles (one of them):

One instruction for Windows 7, and the second for Windows 10. The articles are long, I see no reason to repeat what has already been written, and even this would not be an article, but a complete mess. And so, everything is on the shelves. If you connected your laptop to Wi-Fi, and there is a yellow “no internet access” icon, then open one of the articles above (which suits your operating system) , and follow the instructions.

Faced such a problem when setting up a router, or on mobile device? I also gave links to special articles with solutions to these problems at the beginning of this page.

It's no secret that most network users prefer to connect to the Internet through a Wi-Fi distributor. Well, when this does not cause any problems. But what to do when the system shows an error? As you know, there can be at least two options in this situation: contact service center or try to fix the error yourself. We will consider the case where a computer with Windows system 8 when connected, writes “limited”.

Determine the cause of the problem

It happens that users complain that initially there were no problems with connecting via Wi-Fi. However, after a while, the Internet disappears, and the status Restricted appears next to the wireless network icon. Why is this happening?

There can be quite a few reasons, from problems associated with the router to problems in the system itself. First, make sure your Wi-Fi sharer is turned on. See how it interacts with other devices. If, for example, a smartphone connects to the network without problems, and an error occurs on a laptop, then most likely this is due to.

Fix connection settings

Alternatively, problems may arise due to a failure in the settings. In this case, open the Network and Control Center. Here you need to select Change adapter settings. It is located on the left side of the screen.

Here we find the network connection that we are interested in. In its menu, click Status and go to Details. Often incorrect settings can be found here. You can edit the parameters in the same section, for which you need to go to Properties. You will learn more about setting up an Internet connection from this.

Other options for fixing the error

So, if the above did not help you fix the error, then there are a few more working tips that you can use. The problem may lie in the antivirus. Dr.Web especially often sins with this. The program can block access to the network for any reason that is clear only to it. Try disabling all protection modules and reconnecting to the network. Of course, surfing the Internet without an antivirus is highly discouraged, so consider installing another antivirus program. Detailed Description all kinds of antiviruses here.

You can try to fix the "connection restricted" error by activating FIPS Compatibility Mode. To do this, go to Network connections and select the one that interests us. Right-click on it and select Status from the context menu. Go to connection properties. Next, click Advanced Options. Now select the desired mode and finish the action with the OK button.

Oddly enough, you can get rid of the connection limitation by resetting the time, region and date in the Wi-Fi router settings. To do this, go to the Wireless tab, directly where the wireless connection itself is configured. Select the desired region, save the changes and reboot the device. The time and date are corrected in System Tools. This section usually contains other system settings.

So, there are several reasons why the “limited” connection error appears. In Windows 8, it is corrected by various means, depending on why it arose. Do not forget about installing updated drivers on the router, which is one of the common causes errors. If all the above actions did not bring any result, you will have to turn to specialists. However, before doing this, remember that after changing the settings of the router or the system, restart the device, otherwise they will not be activated.

Internet connection via wireless WiFi networks- it's not difficult: when there is necessary equipment, you need to do just a few simple steps and you can enjoy the open spaces virtual world... But not everything is so simple, for example: the system refuses to see the adapter or the status “connection is limited or absent“. These and other issues will be discussed in this article.

Ideally, connecting to Wi-Fi on Windows 8 proceeds as follows. Provided that your PC has a wireless module, all drivers are installed and Wi-Fi is on, then on the taskbar you can find an icon that displays network divisions with an asterisk on top. This means that you and your PC are on the right path, and the last of you sees the networks with which you can connect. By clicking on this icon, you should select the desired Wi-Fi network, then click "Connect", then (in the window that opens) enter the password for the network and click the "Next" button located just below.

After that, a window will appear in which the computer will ask you about the possibility of network sharing. This is very important point responsible for the security of your PC. If you are at home (i.e. home network), then you can allow sharing, if you are in public place, then you cannot turn on sharing. If the connection is successful, then the snowflake icon will be replaced by an icon with a signal level (i.e. the same sign will become filled and that same snowflake will disappear). Now let's look at possible problems Wi-Fi connections.

Leading among the problems is the lack of networks available for connection in the laptop's field of vision, and sometimes the complete absence of any wireless networks. In this situation, you will see a monitor icon on the taskbar with a red X in the corner, indicating that there is no connection.

There are several reasons here:

- lack of a Wi-Fi network adapter (it is usually built into laptops, most likely you will not find it on stationary PCs);

- lack of drivers for the Wi-Fi adapter (which is not typical for Windows 8 or 10, but possible); - wireless connection is disabled;

— Wi-Fi adapter is broken;

The solution to these problems is pretty easy. In the first case, you need to buy an adapter. As for the lack of drivers, you must first make sure that you correctly diagnosed the problem. To do this, right-click on the Internet connection icon, open "Network and Sharing Center", and then open "Change adapter settings". If, after looking through the adapters, you did not find a connection called " Wireless network”, then you can be sure that there are no drivers (if, of course, there is an adapter that needs these drivers). In this situation, the problem is solved by downloading and installing the driver.

Sometimes it happens that both the adapter, and the driver, and the “Wireless Network” connection are there, but the connection itself does not work because it is disabled. In this case, you need to find it (as indicated above) and turn it on with the right mouse button. Another problem may be the wrong password. It is issued as an error "Invalid network security key. Try again.” If you forgot your password, you can find it in the router settings or on another PC.

And now let's talk about the second leader in Wi-Fi connection problems on Windows 8 or 10. This is the "Restricted" icon, which manifests itself as a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark located on the taskbar. It appears after connecting and does not allow the Internet to work. First you need to check how the Internet works from the same source on other devices. If everything is in order there, then the problem is really in the computer, namely in its operating system.

There are several options for solving this problem, and which one is correct is determined by experiment: - changing the adapter driver; - changing the operating mode of the router itself; - setting the time, date and region on the router; - setting FIPS compatibility; - disabling the antivirus; - reset the evaluation of data usage.

Hello friends! In this article, we will try to solve another very tricky problem that is observed on Windows 8 when connecting to WiFi router. This connection status is “Restricted”.

I'll probably start by noticing the same problem in the comments. People wrote that Windows 8 laptops connect to Wi-Fi, work fine for a while, and then the Internet disappears and the status appears "Limited". A network icon with a yellow exclamation mark. Like this:

Questions appeared, I gave some recommendations, they did not help. I promised to take care of this problem.

My attempts to solve the problem

There was a question, it was left by Maxim. He wrote that he has Windows 8 and connects to a wireless network (TP-Link TL-WR841N router) 10 minutes everything works fine and the connection is broken. Status Limited (as in the screenshot above).

He asked for a Skype call. I don't usually do this (I have enough comments :)) but here it was already necessary to deal with this problem!

Maxim and I tried to solve this problem for three days via Skype. (mostly in the evenings). And we almost got it :). Already everything seemed to be fine, the Internet worked stably, but a few minutes ago Maxim wrote and said that the network had disappeared again. But we have a few more options, check them out more 🙂

I already thought not to continue this article, but still decided to write and tell what we tried to do (which we just did not try :)) and that helped, though not quite.

What we tried to do:

At first I advised to just install Windows 7 :). But this option did not fit, the license and all that.

1. Change the password and security type in the router settings. Read about it.

2. Experiment with the wireless network channel. We read.

3. Set the correct time zone and time in the router settings.

4. Updated the driver for the wireless adapter. I wrote about this in an article.

5. We tried to set static IP and DNS in the settings of the wireless adapter on the laptop.

7. Tried to set the mode "Only g". Learn more about changing modes.

And that's probably not all 🙂

What seems to have helped:

Maxim found a way in which it was written that you just need to remove the wireless adapter in the device manager and update the hardware configuration. He did not delete anything, but simply right-clicked on the wireless adapter and selected "Update hardware configuration".

Oddly enough, this helped for a while, but still, after 20 hours of work, the Internet was cut off and the “Limited” status appeared. If this happens again, we will try to remove the adapter.

We confirm the deletion.

Then the system will update the configuration and you may need to reinstall the driver for the wireless adapter. Above is a link to an article on how to do this. Only when you download a new driver, make sure that it is for your laptop model and is compatible with Windows 8.

Specifically, in this situation, it is also not necessary to exclude viruses, problems in some program, system failure, device marriage, etc. But there is a problem, which means there must be a solution.

Windows 8: connection status “Limited”

Of course, the reasons may be different, therefore, perhaps one of the tips that you will find below will help you and use it to solve the problem with unstable Internet operation in Windows 8 (8.1).

One important point. How do other devices work with your network? If the Internet does not work on them either, sites do not open, the status is Without access to the Internet, then most likely the problem is in the router itself. See these articles:

If other devices work fine, then the problem is still in the laptop, or rather in Windows 8. Try to follow the recommendations that you will find below. And don't forget to share your result in the comments.

Working tips to help get rid of the “Restricted” status

Update #1. Install driver 5.100.245.200 for Broadcom

Vyacheslav in the comments (thanks him more!) shared one solution for Broadcom adapters that helped him get rid of this problem. I quote:

The people for those who have an adapter "Broadcom 802.11n" found a solution for themselves for a long time. Open the device manager "Broadcom 802.11n" adapter-properties-updating drivers - search on this computer - select from those already installed - UNCHECK only compatible devices - select 5.100.245.200 from the list and install. Everything is working?

Yes, and do not update the driver like this is the only driver without a glitch for Windows 8 and 8.1 today, and Microsoft technical support is silent about this.

More detailed instructions with pictures:

Go to My computer, right-click on an empty area and select Properties. In a new window, on the left click on Device Manager.

Choose an item “Search for drivers on this computer”.

Uncheck the box Only compatible devices, choose from the list Broadcom, then select the driver whose version 5.100.245.200 .

That's it, the driver is installed.

After these steps, the Internet in Windows 8 should work stably. Without "Restricted" status.

I don't have the opportunity to test this method right now, but I hope it will help you. Do not forget to write how it helped or not.

Thanks Nicholas for the screenshots!

Update #2. Change the mode of operation of the Wi-Fi network.

Information appeared in the comments that this problem can be solved by changing the mode of the wireless network. The problem occurs when devices are connected via mode n.

If in the router settings you set the choice only between modes b/g, or only g, then the problem is solved. And the network on Windows 8 works fine. But I didn't check it. (info from comments).

Everything is written in detail and shown in the screenshots. This shouldn't be a problem.

But this method has one drawback. Decrease in the speed of the Internet over Wi-Fi. Since the n mode works at speeds up to 300 Mb / s. And the g mode is up to 54 Mbps.

Update #3. Set the correct region, time and date

In the comments, information also appeared that it was possible to solve this problem by setting your region, the correct time and date in the router settings.

Here is the comment itself:

You can change the region in the router settings on the tab Wireless (where you set up Wi-Fi). Just select the region where you are, save the settings and reboot the router.

Change the time and date on the tab System Tools (system settings and the like).

Thanks Igor for the advice!

Update #4. Enable FIPS Compliance Mode

Another piece of advice appeared in the comments. Igor wrote that the method with the inclusion of the FIPS compatibility mode helped him.

NikiNik checked and also made sure that the method works. The Internet on Windows 8 began to work stably. NikiNik sent me screenshots so that I can add this method to the article.

Instructions for enabling FIPS compliance:

Click to view instructions with screenshots

We go into.

Right click on the connection Wireless network and choose State.

Click on the button.

And check the box next to .

And we press Ok.

Thanks to Igor and Nikolay (NikiNik) for the tips and screenshots!

Update #5. Disable antivirus ( Special attention to Dr.Web)

In the comments, Vladimir shared information that completely disabling Dr.Web anti-virus protection helped him. It turns out that Dr.Web blocked the connection and the Internet did not work.

You need to disable all protection modules. Also, if you determine that the problem is in the antivirus, then you can try adding your connection to the exceptions.

If you do not have Dr.Web, but another antivirus, check anyway, maybe it's in it.

Afterword

I also wanted to ask you, maybe you know how to solve this problem and make the Internet work stably. Share your advice or thoughts in the comments. Thank you from me 🙂.

All the best!

Status “Restricted” in Windows 8 (8.1) when connected via Wi-Fi updated: April 9, 2014 by: admin
