General concepts

Metals and alloys used in artistic forging - iron, steel, copper, bronze, brass, tin, aluminum.

Malleability is a property of metals that allows them to succumb to the effects of forging and other types of metal processing. The main indicators of malleability are deformation resistance and ductility.

Corrosion resistance - the ability of a metal to resist the effects of an aggressive environment.

Rigidity of forged structures - property of forged parts metal structures do not change the geometric dimensions under external influences.

Elements: forged and cast

Often, to reduce the cost of a product, it is proposed to “assemble” a structure from ready-made elements. Or in the description of the project, made according to your picture, names are mentioned that are unfamiliar to you by ear. Most often these are classic elements of forged products decor.

This may upset someone, but forged elements are usually made in China. Wholesale suppliers bring custom-made batches of elements to choose from from extensive catalogs.

Acanthus leaf a classic decorative element depicting a southern plant leaf. Balusters curly posts, connected from above with a railing. In blacksmithing, they are used in the manufacture of fences for stairs, balconies, terraces. Flowerpot decoration stylized as a vase or basket. Volute curl-shaped element. Wider - in architecture a spiral motif, often with a peephole inside. Monogram initial letters of proper names, linked together in an openwork pattern. Garland a motif of flowers, leaves and fruits, sometimes intertwined with a ribbon. Cartouche scroll or shield element with curled edges. Bracket (forged) a decorative piece or structure that is attached to a wall and supports something. Medallion oval or round frame for any image, as well as the drawing itself, a relief ornament, enclosed in such a frame. Completion is a decorative completion of the upper part of the post, posts (balls, spikes, cones, etc.). End classic element of artistic forging, the final part forged productscharacterized by a taut end (often a gentle curl with decreasing thickness). Palmetta motif in the form of a stylized multi-blade palm leaf. Power socket a motif that looks like a round stylized image of a flower with identical petals. Solomon's spiral (basket, cone) a decorative element formed from thin rods, spirally twisted and forming a hollow openwork "cocoon". Flowers One of the most popular motives in art forging. Most often they are made in parts, after which they are assembled into an artistic pattern by welding, riveting or soldering.

It will not be superfluous to know that

A rapport is a repeating element of an ornament. The module is an artistic and decorative element (or fragment) taken as the basis for constructing the same repeating pattern. Link (section) part metal fence or a fence delimited by two posts or posts.

Finishing of forged products

Bluing heat treatment metal product with preliminary application of special chemical substances: acids and oils. As a result, the metal is covered with a blue-black oxide film. Etching - obtaining a drawing, pattern or lettering on a metal object using corrosive chemicals. Inlaid decoration of forged metal products with other non-ferrous metals or precious stones. A notch is a decorative treatment of metal, which consists in applying "dashes" to the surface. Used to make delicate curly designs such as veins on plant leaves. Patina is an oxide-carbonate film that has a color tint (silver, bronze, green). Patina is formed under the influence environment, at the same time protecting the metal from destruction. It has a decorative value especially in production forged items "Semi-antique". Corrugation is one of the ways to decorate forged products using blacksmith tools (rough engraving). Cloth decorative finishing metal products twisted wire patterns.

Compound

Elements:

Clamp is an element that connects several rods or other forged elements. Today it is used only in manual hot forging. Bindra wire, with the help of which the elements of the forged product are temporarily (before welding or soldering) connected. A rivet is a cylindrical iron rod with a head at one end; used to connect forged elements and parts.

Methods:

Riveting one of oldest ways connections forged metalswhen individual details connected with rivets. Soldering is the process of introducing solder (molten material) between metal parts, which has a melting point lower than the parts being alloyed, resulting in a strong bond. Welding is a method of joining metal products by their joint deformation after heating the welding points. Previously, a forge was used for this, today gas and electric welding is more often used.

Forged product processing

Hardening rapid cooling steel heated to a very high temperature; gives the product hardness and other necessary qualities. Cleaning mechanical removal of scale, weld sagging, welding spatter and other metal defects from a forged product. Sandblasting matting - surface treatment with a jet of sand supplied under pressure, which allows the surface to be smoothed and roughened (to improve the adhesion of paints and varnishes). Anti-corrosion treatment coating metal surfaces a thin layer of another metal, alloy, or non-metallic material that forms an anti-corrosion coating to protect against corrosion. Primer application of a pre-coating on a forged product to improve adhesion (adhesion) of the main protective or decorative coating. Painting application of a protective or decorative (often these functions are combined) coating on the product. Galvanic coating is a metal film applied to the surface of metal products by electroplating to give them hardness, wear resistance, anti-corrosion, anti-friction, decorative properties (zinc, anodizing, chrome plating, nickel plating, oxidation). The method was not widely used due to its high cost.

Rolling material

That from which the blacksmith will make the product.

A semi-finished metal bar, a workpiece for the production of parts using plastic deformation or cutting. Depending on the purpose, the rods have a cross-section of a round, rectangular, hexagonal, less often trapezoidal, oval or segmental shape.

  • Square - a square rod with a diameter of 8 to 25 mm.
  • Round timber is a round section rod.
* It is possible to obtain a change in the cross-section of a standard square rod from 20 × 20 to a strip of 30 × 5 and further to a strip of 20 × 10 only by forging. Round timber with a diameter of 50 mm, used for turned parts. Strip rod rectangular section, half of the square. Profile is a measured section of a product, obtained by rolling, pressing, forming (flexible) between rolls. Profile section - section along a line perpendicular to the long side of the segment; varies in width. Forging an intermediate piece or a product obtained by forging or die forging. Depending on their characteristics, forgings are subdivided by cross-section - square, rectangular, polygonal and round, as well as by the manufacturing method - stamped and forged.

Technology

Forging is one of the main types of metal forming using heating. The technology distinguishes between hot (processing of hot metal), cold (deformation of cold metal blanks), mixed (use of forged, finished cast and welded elements). Die forging is a method of processing iron, in which the required shape is obtained by pressing the prepared materials into a special metal mold. Casting is the process of obtaining shaped castings by filling the prepared molds with molten metal. Cast elements (balls, lances, etc.) are often used in parallel with forging elements and are integral parts of fences, gates, railings. Stamping is a type of metal working by pressure, in which the forming of a forging from a heated workpiece is carried out using special tool - stamp. Stamp is a blank for the production of standard repeating elements that are required in large quantities (for example, the same type of curls for a fence). Torsion (twisting) method of processing metal rods for attachment decorative look... Rods no more than two centimeters thick, pre-annealed and cooled in air, using simple technologies lend themselves to twisting when cold.

Metal processing techniques

Rolling - the transformation of a wire into a narrow strip by rolling in special rollers, one of the classic techniques of artistic forging. Drawing - the processing of metals by pressure, in which workpieces of a round or shaped profile are pulled through a hole, the cross-section of which is less than the cross-section of the workpiece. Knockout bending of the part on the form by hammer blows with preheating. Cutting out (cutting) production from sheet metal using cutting tools parts of a given shape by cutting. Punching cutting with a sharp tool (chisel, blacksmith's ax, etc.) of parts of a certain shape or part of the workpiece. Bending changes in the shape and geometry of the metal, made without preheating. Under the influence of force, the workpiece bends and deforms, its outer layers are stretched, the inner layers are compressed. Rolling processing of metals and metal alloys by pressure, consisting in their reduction between the rotating rolls of rolling mills. Chopping is the process of processing metal using a special blacksmith's ax, chisel or undercut. One of the techniques of artistic forging, the result of which is the cutting off of a part of the metal along the outer contour of the workpiece. Straightening alignment (straightening) of rolled products, wire, extended forgings, stampings, castings, machined parts to eliminate distortions and other defects. Chasing artistic processing metal, making a drawing, inscription, image, which consists in knocking out a certain relief on a plate.
