Nier automata PC graphics improvement. What's wrong with NieR: Automata on PC? Technical analysis from Digital Foundry

NieR: Automata made all the players happy gameplay, but may not be particularly pleased with their technical problems. The large open world and other features of the game, alas, can cause many errors and bugs. Below are some common problems and their solutions.

First you need to make sure that the characteristics of your computer meet the system requirements indicated by the developers from Platinum Games.

Minimum system requirements:

  • Processor: Intel CPU Core i3-2100 or AMD A8-6500 or better
  • RAM: 4 GB RAM
  • Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 (2 GB) or AMD Radeon R9 270X (2 GB) or better
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Free space: 50 GB
  • Resolution: 720p
  • Operating system: Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 (64 bit)
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-46700 3.5 GHz or AMD A10-7850K or better
  • RAM: 8 GB RAM
  • Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 (4 GB) or AMD Radeon R9 380X (4 GB) and better
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Free space: 50 GB
  • Resolution: 1080p

Lags, brakes, low FPS, freezes, crashes and black screen most often occur due to weak hardware, so make sure that your PC meets the system requirements.

If everything is in order, then update the software. First, download the latest video card drivers, which can be found on the official AMD Radeon and Nvidia GeForce websites. Don't forget to download the latest update for your processor.

In addition, you can optimize your computer for video game needs by installing Razer Game Booster or Nvidia GeForce Experience. And don't forget to update DirectX.

If in the game no sound, you should check your audio device. Make sure it is connected to the PC and that there is sound in other games or programs (start a YouTube video, for example). Update your audio and video card drivers, if available.

Gamepad not working(joystick) - try reconnecting the device to the USB connector. If this does not help, close the game, connect the gamepad, and only then launch the game. Make sure Windows has downloaded the required gamepad drivers. It is also worth noting that some joysticks do not work with some video games.

Most fans of the popular action NieR Automata sooner or later they face various kinds of problems. Among the most common problems are NieR Automata not installing, not launching, or freezing, slowing down, or black screen appearing, as well as other problems during the game, in particular, NieR Automata does not save, controls do not work, or there is no sound in game, in this article we will take a closer look at the main causes of problems and errors, as well as how to fix them.

NieR Automata won't install

NieR Automata System Requirements

Before installing NieR Automata on your computer, you should check the system requirements of the game developers. Remember that for the game to work correctly, at least the minimum requirements must be met. However, in some cases, even the minimum settings may not be enough. In this case, either you will have to abandon the game, or increase the performance of your computer.

Minimum Featured
OS: Windows 7 64-bit Windows 10 64-bit
CPU Intel Core i3-2100 3.10 GHz
AMD APU A8-6500 3.50 GHz
Intel Core i5-4670 3.40 GHz
AMD APU A10-7850K 3.70 GHz
Video card:

nVidia GeForce GTX 770 2GB
AMD Radeon R9 270X 2Gb

nVidia GeForce GTX 980 4Gb
AMD Radeon R9 380X 4Gb

RAM: 4Gb 8Gb
Free disk space: 50Gb 50Gb

Of course, we will not throw the game away, but we will work on the preliminary settings. In this regard, we will check our PC for compliance with the simplest requirements. So if NieR Automata won't install let's see if it's enough free space on your hard drive to install the game. The distribution requires free disk space, so a few gigabytes of extra space won't hurt. Also, keep in mind that various games require a significant amount of free space, up to 100 GB and above.

NieR Automata installation blocked by antivirus software

Often, anti-virus programs, in the fight against viruses, protecting our computer from external threats, block numerous processes performed by the operating system for security purposes. Sometimes such security is so strong that it begins to block access not only to viruses, but also suspends some normal processes, perhaps by mistake, considering them potentially vulnerable. Hence the conclusion: disable your antivirus while installing NieR Automata.

Cleaning the computer and restarting

Sometimes, a simple reboot of the system can immediately solve many problems that arise both during the installation of games and their subsequent work. The same applies to various programs and applications. There are many reasons, as already mentioned: the computer is clogged with various kinds of garbage, including overflow of the system cache, the maximum allowable number of simultaneously running processes, among which, perhaps some are hung and are not running, but the load on the system is pretty good. In this case, .

Internet access

Some game clients during the installation process require access to the Internet, providing access to the installation or update server. In this case, it is necessary make sure the internet is working.

NieR Automata won't launch

Before looking for reasons why NieR Automata won't launch, you need to make sure that the installation of the game itself was successful. Otherwise, if during the installation process on the computer, there were any failures or errors, but at the same time the game was installed, nevertheless, it is impossible to guarantee the subsequent launch and performance of the game with maximum accuracy. If the game starts lucky. However, what will happen next is unknown.

Reinstalling the game

Surely, many gamers have encountered a situation or, as they say, a cause, a consequence, associated with reinstalling the game. That is, if the game installed normally, but does not want to start, reinstalling it can fix the problem. What is the reason for this, it is not known, maybe the antivirus or firewall "ate" some files or something else at the time of installation, but after installing the game again, it becomes fully functional. In this way, uninstall the game and reinstall it paying attention to every detail of installation. Perhaps at some point the installer will ask for some files and so on.

Finding information by error text

Another option, it is not described in this article, but as such a small secret that everyone knows about, we add that an error when starting NieR Automata is usually accompanied by a corresponding system message. So, in this case, it would be true set the text of such an error in the search, as a result of which you will receive the most detailed answer, and, moreover, concerning this specific error. This is exactly how you will accurately determine the cause and, as a result, find a solution.

Running NieR Automata as Administrator

Alternatively, you can run the game as an administrator. That is, in our case, run NieR Automata as administrator, you need to right-click on the shortcut of the game and select Run as administrator. If this method solves the problem so that the error does not occur later, set run as administrator by default for this game. To do this, open the Shortcut Properties, in the Compatibility tab, check the box Run this program as an administrator.

Game compatibility issue

Another obstacle to running NieR Automata may be the incompatibility of the game with your operating system. In this case, all in the same place, in the Properties of the shortcut, you need to add a checkbox Run the program in compatibility mode for:, and select the desired OS from the drop-down list.

Availability of .NET Framework libraries

Also, a very serious problem with starting NieR Automata is the lack of an installed .NET Framework library on the computer, which ensures the launch and maintains the performance of almost all programs and applications, including games. This is a prerequisite and Microsoft. NET Framework must be installed. At the same time, it should be kept in mind that there are various versions.NET Framework libraries, and therefore the presence of any one of them on the computer cannot sufficiently guarantee correct work games.

Availability of DirectX

And, of course, perhaps the most important condition, a requirement that is necessary for absolutely all games, including NieR Automata, installed DirectX. Without it, no game will work. Currently, almost all distributions that in one way or another require the presence of installed DirectX, already have this set in their composition. As a rule, DirectX is automatically installed with the game. However, if it is missing, it must be downloaded and installed. It is not necessary to do this before installing the game, it is possible after installation, but the presence of DirectX on the computer is a must.

NieR Automata freezes

Video card issue in NieR Automata

The reason for the freezing of many computer games, including NieR Automata, is a video card that does not meet its minimum requirements. For gamers, it is the graphics card that is the main tool, the main success or disappointment. If your video card is weak, then no updates, no drivers, and the like will help you anymore. To achieve maximum effect and enjoy the game a reasonable remedy would be to consider purchasing a more modern, stronger graphics card. minus this method there can be significant financial investments, since high-quality graphics and playing at maximum settings are not cheap pleasure, and buying a good video card can result in a tidy sum.

Installing and updating the video card driver

But do not despair. In order for the game to run more or less well on a computer, you can solve the problem even with a regular average video card, you can configure it, and also check all the necessary computer settings to ensure a comfortable game. If your video card is more or less modern, then Prerequisite is to have the latest drivers. Fortunately, you can download and install them completely free of charge from the official website of the manufacturer. After installing the drivers, as a rule, if you have an AMD or nVidia video card, then special software is loaded with them, which is installed on the computer, and thanks to which you can control various game settings.

NieR Automata slows down

Let's return to the problems described above, related, so to speak, with poor-quality installation of the game. If there were any problems at the same time, it is quite possible that the game will often cause braking, lags and other errors in the future.

NieR Automata slows down due to unnecessary processes

If the game NieR Automata slows down, you can also check the workload of the operating system. By itself, any game requires significant resources to play and work correctly. NieR Automata is no exception. If in this moment, besides the game, other processes are running in the system, you need to check them and determine how important they are at the moment. As a quick fix, close all unnecessary processes and leave only the really necessary ones. The main thing here is not to overdo it, otherwise you can close everything in the world so that the computer itself just gets up.

NieR Automata slows down due to poor internet

Another point is access to the Internet. If the game requires good high-speed Internet, then of course the problem is obvious and, in principle, understandable. And according to this, it is worth thinking about purchasing a more powerful tariff. But there are times when even good internet, NieR Automata slows down. For example, at a certain moment, an update of some application on the computer began, for example, an antivirus, not to mention if movies are downloaded along with the game. Or maybe you watched a video, for example about passing NieR Automata, and playing the game at the same time!? Thus, anything will slow down here. Decide one thing: either a movie or a game. And if you need both, then at least the computer must have "thermonuclear" properties. Do you understand what we are talking about!?

NieR Automata how to increase fps

Graphics settings in NieR Automata

High fps or fps is what is so often lacking in a game. If you are one of those users, then using the maximum graphics settings can greatly affect the FPS of the game and cause various lags, braking, freezes. On the other hand, If you lower the graphics settings as much as possible, you can significantly increase the fps. By the way, you can manage graphics settings not only in the game itself, but also in software your video card.

Video card overclocking tools

To greatly raise fps NieR Automata many users use overclocking tools. There are a lot of them on the network and it will not be difficult to find them. For example, to overclock an nVidia graphics card, you can use the MSI Afterburner utility.

Low fps due to overheating

Low FPS in NieR Automata maybe because of cpu overheating, and the video card itself. The above tools can eliminate this problem, thanks to which you can, for example, set the speed of the cooler to the maximum.

NieR Automata black screen

If it so happened that NieR Automata gives a black screen, there is a problem, again, with the video card. Check for the availability of drivers, namely, their compliance with the latest. If the manufacturer has released more than new version, do not be lazy to spend time - update your video card driver.

NieR Automata crashes

If the game NieR Automata crashes to desktop, in this case it is worth checking the correct installation of both the game itself and updates, patches, etc. Perhaps the previous update itself contains certain errors. There is already little that depends on the gamer, all questions are for the game developers. If it is possible to reinstall received updates, do so. In the worst case - reinstalling the game itself.

NieR Automata not saving

Probably the most common cause, according to which NieR Automata not saving, is incorrect path to save the game. What does it mean? And this means only one thing - many games refuse to work with the Cyrillic alphabet. If the folder on your computer with the game saves has Cyrillic characters in its path, then NieR Automata may give an error when saving. Simply put, use the path to the NieR Automata save folder, only in Latin, without Russian words.

Most problems with saving NieR Automata are due to the incompatibility of the game with the operating system. this fact is most inherent in the operating Windows system 7, but possibly others.

NieR Automata control not working

Problem with keyboard or joystick

If in NieR Automata control not working, there are many reasons. For example, if the control buttons do not respond at all, there may be a problem with the controller or keyboard. Check the connection is secure and, if necessary, reboot the device. Sometimes, a game restart is required to complete this procedure.

Sticky keys in game

Often a problem with controlling NieR Automata can occur due to sticky keys. When several buttons are pressed at the same time, the system reacts to this in a peculiar way. What conclusion can be drawn from this? - use joysticks to play.

Incorrect control settings

At the same time, the control problem may lie in the NieR Automata control settings. Carefully check the control keys and, if necessary, replace them with the ones you need.

Wrong keyboard layout

As an option, you can change keyboard layout. You can do this with a keyboard shortcut Shift+Alt. The fact is that controls in some games for some reason only work on the English layout or vice versa. Experiment.

NieR Automata no sound

Adjusting volume settings

There is such an interesting point: if at all, it is understandable, but there are situations when the sound on the computer works, but, for example, in some application, for example, in a browser or game, there is no sound. The problem is that the corresponding parameters are not set in the sound card settings. In other words, if in NieR Automata no sound, necessary open Volume Options and check all available settings, Special attention while giving our game.

Sound settings in NieR Automata

If there is no such application in the volume settings, but there is still no sound in NieR Automata, go to the settings of the game itself. Most likely, the main sound device is disabled or changed somewhere. And further. Very common, and occurs in almost everyone - game sound settings messed up or playback devices are not defined. In order to solve the problem, restart the game, and if there is a desire and a little time, for greater confidence, restart the system. In many cases, this method helps.

These are just a few of the things you can do to look out for when you experience problems with NieR Automata. Perhaps something is left unsaid, something is said wrong. If you have any questions about the game, please ask them in the comments. Or, if you have already encountered various kinds of problems, were able to solve them, please share. Perhaps someone is having a similar problem right now, and your solution will help fix the situation. Good luck and good game!

We were really looking forward to the release of the role-playing action NieR: Automata from the studio Platinum Games to personal computers. The game was resolution limited 1080p even on PlayStation 4 Pro. But more troubling were the frequent glitches and stutters, especially common in the more open areas of the project. We hoped that the version for PC overcome these limitations, but, alas, this did not happen. On top of that, there was also more problems in which it is difficult to believe the eyes.

Unfortunately, first impressions weren't very positive due to a problem with full screen mode. A freshly installed game presented us with a flattened image in the format 4:3 , regardless of which resolution is selected. Fortunately, with the help of the utility Borderless Gaming we were able to force launch the game windowed mode without frames and complete the task - to restore the correct aspect ratio. But the fact that we had to resort to it is terrible. And yet, there is an opportunity to fix everything. Poryskav on the forum Steam, we found a patch created by the user Kaldaien, designed to address these weird permission issues, among others. The same player has helped improve other PC ports in the past, such as Tales of Berseria and Tales of Zestiria.

But even with the community fixes, it's clear as day that NieR: Automata is a demanding game. The more we played, the more we understood why Platinum limited PS4 Pro resolution to 1080p. It may not work on the most modern engine, but it is very demanding on hardware. GPUs Medium to top level provide the same experience as on consoles, but we needed GTX 980 Ti to play the game in 1440p and improve the wobbly framerate seen on the PS4 Pro.

But even in combination with a six-core i7 5820K still noticeable stuttering that manifests itself during the exploration of the world. We are convinced that this is an engine optimization problem: the CPU load hardly reaches 20% , at 1080p load GPU was only 60% , while at 1440p it reaches 95% .

When the game crashes, the GPU load figures drop to 20%. RAM and media could be next on the checklist, but having a quad-channel RAM combined with fast SSD, we ruled out this possibility. Be that as it may, there were fewer stutters in comparison with both versions of the PlayStation 4, but even on a super-powerful PC, we could not achieve stable 60fps.

Just like on PS4, on PC all game cutscenes are pre-rendered videos that were captured from the base PS4 in 900p and 30fps. Unfortunately, many users, including us, have encountered serious problems when playing them. The cutscenes were incredibly twitchy. Given that these sequences are used for the main story fights, the lack of smooth replay is a big disappointment.

So what about the PC-specific improvements? Don't wait here for a level Frostbite. In fact, there is only one image setting in the menu - multiple anti-aliasing ( MSAA). These days, this is a rarity, so on the one hand it's even nice to see that this is implemented here. On the other hand, it greatly affects the frame rate. .

GTX 980 Ti sake 1080p/60fps? GTX 1080 for 1440p? The truth is that the game becomes much more playable if you just disable anti-aliasing. Many players missed this as MSAA is directly related to the quality options - selecting high settings automatically sets 8x MSAA. Do you want our advice? Turn it off completely. In fact, MSAA causes a lot of minor visual problems when used in conjunction with light diffusion ( ambient occlusion). Funnily enough, for some reason AO also allows separate post-process anti-aliasing, negating the need for MSAA.

There are few settings in the menu, but we end up seeing an improvement over previous Platinum ports. First, NieR fully supports arbitrary resolution, which was not available in previous games. It's very unfortunate that support for this resolution doesn't work as it should, requiring a community-created patch. Other improvements are 16x anisotropic filtering, which offers a decent enough upgrade over what the PS4 Pro delivers (representing significantly better performance and visuals than the stock console). AF is an important part of the image as there are many open areas in NieR.

The blur option is also useful. It allows you to create a beautiful motion blur that is present on the PlayStation 4 Pro, but not on the standard PS4. After, of course, comes the quality of the shadows. It affects their resolution and the distance from which they start to be drawn. Higher settings correspond to the console version, and lowering them has a significant impact on image quality, so we recommend turning this option all the way up if you are not playing on a low-end PC. It should be noted that the sudden floating of objects is a problem in all versions of the game and cannot be fixed by settings. Whether on PS4 or PC, you see grass and buildings appear.

Ultimately, what we have here is one of the studio's most adequate ports, but not particularly impressive given how easy it is to run into clownish issues that involve a complete lack of quality control. The performance is poor, but it's relatively easy to bring it up to the level of the console versions. Disappointing is the fact that the game has serious problems at the level of the engine, which even a very powerful computer cannot handle.

It's great to see that Platinum Games have implemented more standard functions - Metal Gear Rising supported only the choice of resolution and refresh rate. NieR: Automata's option set is hardly cutting-edge or truly optimal, but we're making some progress, albeit marred by issues elsewhere. Ultimately, this game is worth playing. Neither the PS4 nor PC version offer the same level of performance that we would like, but the latter has the potential to be the best if you have powerful enough hardware and can put up with the above problems. Just don't expect the best graphics or amazing performance here.

It turned out to be a pleasant surprise on personal computers, but, as it turned out, the quality of the port from Platinum Games leaves much to be desired. This article will help you solve some of the problems that the developers turned a blind eye to.

However, before jumping directly to the tips, you need to check if your computer meets the project's system requirements. It will be enough Intel Core i3-2100 to run NieR Automata on minimum settings. The situation with video cards is strange - GTX 770 is indicated in the minimum requirements, but players say that they can safely play with enough frames even on GTX 660:

  • OS:
  • CPU: Intel Core i3 2100 | AMD A8 6500;
  • RAM: 4 GB;
  • Video card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 with 2GB VRAM | AMD Radeon R9 270X with 2GB VRAM;
  • HDD: about 50 GB;
  • DirectX version: 11.
The recommended requirements do not raise questions:
  • OS: Windows 7 / 8.1 / 10 (x64 only);
  • CPU: Intel Core i5 4670 | AMD A10 7850K;
  • RAM: 8 GB;
  • Video card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 with 4GB VRAM | AMD Radeon R9 380X with 4 GB VRAM;
  • HDD: about 50 GB;
  • DirectX version: 11.
If your hardware meets the minimum requirements, then you have done half the job. Now you can move on to the troubleshooting step.

Files, drivers and libraries

Powerful hardware is, of course, very cool, but by itself it is unlikely to provide an acceptable level of performance, as technology is constantly evolving: new software kits, various drivers and libraries are released.

Therefore, the first step is to update the drivers for the video card. The two largest manufacturers of this type of components have already released new versions that fully support NieR Automata:

A prerequisite for the successful functioning of any game is the availability of the latest drivers for all devices in the system. Download the utility Driver Updater to download quickly and easily latest versions drivers and install them with one click:

  • download Driver Updater and run the program;
  • scan the system (usually it takes no more than five minutes);
  • update outdated drivers with one click.
Next - a little more routine, which is so famous for PC gaming. Yes, let's go update DirectX, .NET Framework and Visual C++ libraries: For convenience, all current Microsoft Visual C++ distributions are listed in a separate list:
  • (Download )
  • (Download )
  • (Download )
  • (Download )
After completing a whole bunch of installations and pretty much clogging the download folder in the browser, at the output you got a system completely ready for the game, and now, if problems arise, you need to understand first of all the game, and not the compatibility of certain files of the operating system.

White screen, crashes on AMD graphics cards

Remove old drivers and install version 16.11.5. Turn off Xbox DVR in the Xbox menu. If this does not help, then enable windowed frameless mode.

Slows down on Nvidia graphics cards

Go to driver settings, let global graphics card settings overwrite game settings. Disable anisotropic filtering.

In the game settings, use the following options:

  • Windowed Mode
  • V-Sync: OFF
  • AA: OFF
  • Motion Blur: OFF
  • HBAO:ON
  • Anistrophic Filter: x16

Incorrect resolution in full screen mode

In some cases, NieR Automata refuses to properly apply the resolution in full screen mode. Enthusiast Kaldaien found a solution. In you will find a small file that needs to be replaced with dxgi.ini in the game folder.

Gamepad not working properly

It may happen that NieR Automata mixes up the buttons or refuses to understand half of your gamepad. Users claim that this is due to a conflict with programs that display information on top of the game: MSI AFterburner, Fraps and others. Accordingly, they must be disabled.

How to increase productivity

The fix proposed by comrade Kaldaien not only fixes the aspect ratio, but also introduces other useful changes that can be used to increase performance. For example, Kaldaien replaced the frame limiting system by shifting some of the CPU overhead through VBLANK and LimiterTolerance.

In addition to this fix from Kaldaien allows you to adjust the refresh rate, VSYNC and the number of key pre-rendered frames.
