We were really looking forward to the release of the role-playing action NieR: Automata from the studio Platinum Games to personal computers. A freshly installed game presented us with a flattened image in the format 4:3 , regardless of which resolution is selected. Fortunately, with the help of the utility Borderless Gaming we were able to force launch the game windowed mode without frames and complete the task - to restore the correct aspect ratio. But the fact that we had to resort to it is terrible. And yet, there is an opportunity to fix everything. But even with the community fixes, it's clear as day that NieR: Automata is a demanding game. The more we played, the more we understood why Platinum limited PS4 Pro resolution to 1080p. It may not work on the most modern engine, but it is very demanding on hardware. GPUs Medium to top level provide the same experience as on consoles, but we needed GTX 980 Ti to play the game in 1440p and improve the wobbly framerate seen on the PS4 Pro.

Given that these sequences are used for the main story fights, the lack of smooth replay is a big disappointment.
So what about the PC-specific improvements? Don't wait here for a level Frostbite. In fact, there is only one image setting in the menu - multiple anti-aliasing ( MSAA). These days, this is a rarity, so on the one hand it's even nice to see that this is implemented here. On the other hand, it greatly affects the frame rate. .
GTX 980 Ti sake 1080p/60fps? GTX 1080 for 1440p? The truth is that the game becomes much more playable if you just disable anti-aliasing. Many players missed this as MSAA is directly related to the quality options - selecting high settings automatically sets 8x MSAA. Do you want our advice? Turn it off completely. In fact, MSAA causes a lot of minor visual problems when used in conjunction with light diffusion ( ambient occlusion). Funnily enough, for some reason AO also allows separate post-process anti-aliasing, negating the need for MSAA.
There are few settings in the menu, but we end up seeing an improvement over previous Platinum ports. First, NieR fully supports arbitrary resolution, which was not available in previous games. It's very unfortunate that support for this resolution doesn't work as it should, requiring a community-created patch. Other improvements are 16x anisotropic filtering, which offers a decent enough upgrade over what the PS4 Pro delivers (representing significantly better performance and visuals than the stock console). AF is an important part of the image as there are many open areas in NieR.
The blur option is also useful. It allows you to create a beautiful motion blur that is present on the PlayStation 4 Pro, but not on the standard PS4. After, of course, comes the quality of the shadows. It affects their resolution and the distance from which they start to be drawn. Higher settings correspond to the console version, and lowering them has a significant impact on image quality, so we recommend turning this option all the way up if you are not playing on a low-end PC. It should be noted that the sudden floating of objects is a problem in all versions of the game and cannot be fixed by settings. Whether on PS4 or PC, you see grass and buildings appear.
Ultimately, what we have here is one of the studio's most adequate ports, but not particularly impressive given how easy it is to run into clownish issues that involve a complete lack of quality control. The performance is poor, but it's relatively easy to bring it up to the level of the console versions. Disappointing is the fact that the game has serious problems at the level of the engine, which even a very powerful computer cannot handle.
It's great to see that Platinum Games have implemented more standard functions - Metal Gear Rising supported only the choice of resolution and refresh rate. NieR: Automata's option set is hardly cutting-edge or truly optimal, but we're making some progress, albeit marred by issues elsewhere. Ultimately, this game is worth playing. Neither the PS4 nor PC version offer the same level of performance that we would like, but the latter has the potential to be the best if you have powerful enough hardware and can put up with the above problems. Just don't expect the best graphics or amazing performance here.
