After our Lord preached about bread from heaven (we don't know how long after that), He and His disciples went west to the border of Phoenicia. There He entered a house, clearly intending to retire and perhaps find peace and rest. But the Lord was quickly found by a mother, a Syro-Phoenician by birth, whose daughter was possessed by a demon, and she took the opportunity to ask the Lord for the release of her daughter. The fame of Jesus and His miracles of healing the sick, etc., apparently spread throughout the area, but at the same time it became known that Jesus is a Jew and His miracles and mercy are limited only to His own people.
Understandably, there were numerous obstacles to the faith of this woman, and the strength of faith that overcame them is involuntarily admired.

(2) As a poor and illiterate woman, she, of course, was very shy when addressing such an educated and famous person what was this great prophet of Israel, of whom she no doubt had heard much.
Despite the obstacles, her love for her daughter and trust in Jesus were so great that she sought out Him and, according to the custom of that time and place, raised her voice and, perhaps with weeping, “shouted” to the Lord for compassion and help in her grief. : “Have mercy on me, Lord, son of David, my daughter is cruelly raging!” At the very beginning, she was rejected because, as described in Matthew (15:23), our Lord completely ignored her, without answering a word. For many, this would be enough to lose faith and walk away crying, but this was not the case with the woman. She did not stop her lamentations and persistent requests, and was convinced that the Lord had the power to help her and had not yet refused to do so, which means that her faith should not weaken.
The students seem to be bored with her wailing, which may have gone on for a while. Jesus and the disciples had probably already left the house where they were temporarily staying and continued their journey, and the woman continued to follow them and begged for help. The disciples came up and began to persuade Him: “Let her go, because she is screaming after us!” But He answered and said, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."
Our Lord's answer to the disciples seems to indicate that the apostles asked Him to grant her request and then let her go. But His answer shows why He hesitated. The blessings that He intended to give were for a people who were in covenant with God, who were the typical seed of Abraham, and this woman was not from this people, which God in every possible way bestowed with many mercies. She was from a pagan people with whom God had no covenant relationship and for whom nothing had yet been done. Our Lord explained this to the disciples in such a way that the woman would hear, obviously not only for their benefit and hers, but also, we may admit, for our instruction.
Although the Lord did not seem to listen to the woman and was unwilling to show mercy to her, we think it is more reasonable to assume that He fully understood the situation from the very beginning and chose a method that would show the woman's faith, preparing her to receive the desired blessing.
Here we have a lecture on persevering in prayer to the Lord for deliverance from the power of the devil, whether it is in our friends or in ourselves. Just as a woman knew that it was hopeless to hope to seek relief from any other source, so we know that the hope of deliverance from the adversary is possible only with the intervention of the Lord. All this indicated interest and sympathy, but explained the reason why she should not be treated like children in the house, who should be fed first of all, before dogs. So also the people who were in covenant with the Lord, the Jews, were to be taken care of in the first place—healed, taught, and blessed—before these blessings could in any measure and in any way be extended to the Gentiles, who, Compared to the household, they were like dogs. The woman, having prevailed over the Lord's argument, on her knees, admitted with humility that she did not consider herself one of the children entitled to the Father's blessing, but, like a dog under the table, was looking for at least one crumb of divine mercy. How different our case is from anything that happened to the poor woman. Instead of confronting us, the Lord kindly called us to know Himself and His merciful plan. We, at one time strangers, strangers and strangers, were not only redeemed with precious blood, but, having made a covenant with the Lord, were accepted into His family, received the privilege to sit at His table, and He generously set before us, as “food in time,” all the extraordinarily great and precious promises of His Word.
