We need:

Bubble disc: a perforated disc that will rotate slowly, dipping into the trough and rising from there, ready to release bubbles through the holes. After lifting from the trough, the soapy holes move in front of the fan, which, in turn, forms bubbles due to the air stream.

Traffic: To rotate the bubble disc requires a low speed motor. The best option will be a continuous servo motor.

Fan: Anyone with a gentle stream of air will do. It blows a bubble of liquid from a hole in the ring. I used a 12V centrifugal fan.

Energy: Power supply to rotate the ring and power the fan.

You will also need nuts, bolts, hot glue, or superglue to hold the pieces together.

The trough can be cut out of the milk carton, out of plastic container for storing food and other similar materials. I did it in the most convenient way for myself, using a computer CAD program and a laser machine, such tools most people do not have.

The only thing that you have to consider when choosing a material for the trough is that it must hold the liquid inside itself and a servo motor will be attached to it.

I laser cut the parts out of 1/8-inch orange acrylic and using superglue I glued all the parts together. To ensure water resistance, I sealed the outside of the leak with packing tape. I also took into account and provided several slots for mounting my servo.

Bubble blowing disc.

You will need an object to pick up the liquid from the chute and carry it past the fan. There are many ways to improve the design of the disc in order to increase the ability to carry the source of the bubbles, but I did not do this.

The holes in the disc were cut from 1/8-inch thick acrylic. 16 holes were evenly cut in a 6-inch radius. Each hole is slotted to hold more liquid. There are holes in the center of the drive for mounting a standard servo onto it using self-tapping screws.

Then you will need a mechanism to rotate your disc to blow out the bubbles in the trough itself. You need a motor to which you can attach this disc.

I used a modified servo for this, it was great for slow rotation and was powered by two AA batteries. You can easily find information on how to modify the servo so that it does not require a control signal for control. You can also use any suitable motor from an electronics store, or even standard Lego motors.

Fan.

I used a fan that I ordered for $ 5. It operates on 12V voltage and has a performance similar to a standard fan used in a personal computer, but has a much smaller footprint. Best mode for him it turned out to work with a voltage of 12V.

You can even use your household hair dryer without heating the air with the small cone nozzle. I do not recommend using a vacuum cleaner in reverse mode for this, because when I tried to use it myself, it made a big mess in my office when I turned it on :)

The power required will depend on which bubble motor and disc you choose. I used 2 AA batteries for the servo and a 12 V cordless drill battery for the fan.

Here's how to put all the pieces together.

Photo 1: The servomotor is attached to the trough and fixed to it with two M4 screws with nuts. The container for two AA batteries is glued to the trough with hot glue, the wires to them are soldered and insulated.

Photo 2: The bubble disc is screwed to the servomotor with 4 self-tapping screws. Notice how close the disc goes to the bottom of the chute. This is done so that the disc can be wetted with liquid even with a very small amount of the latter.

Photo 4: The centrifugal fan is glued to the back of the chute and oriented so that the outgoing nozzle is directed towards the holes in the disc. Before gluing, test the fan and find it best place, i.e. where its location will promote the generation of bubbles the highest quality... I found a position in which the bubbles flew up. When testing, I used energy from the network, when using the unit in street conditions used a battery from a drill with a voltage of 12 V.

As you can see, I had a lot of fun making and using my bubble machine. It started as a way to entertain the little ones, and ended with the entertainment of businessmen in downtown San Francisco, when we blew bubbles near the fire escape on the balcony.

The battery from the cordless drill provides enough power for my unit, it easily copes with the task and besides it is very easy to recharge, which is more convenient than running an extension cord from the outlet.

I used a 1/2 volume ratio detergent for dishes and 1/2 volume of water. This 50:50 ratio is sufficient to generate quality bubbles, although some people recommend adding another tablespoon of glycerin to the trough.

When kids get tired of blowing bubbles, adults start playing on their own! It turns out that you can pre-heat the air entering the fan with an electric hairdryer, as well as change the speed of the fan's air flow and perform other actions, and get a lot of pleasure at the same time.
