Why do people cross themselves when passing by the church. What is the correct way for Orthodox Christians to be baptized: from right to left or left to right, and with which hand? How to baptize Orthodox Christians correctly in a church at a service, in front of an icon, at the entrance to a temple, a church, on

I live quite far from work, and a significant part of my evening is spent in a minibus - stuffy, dark, packed with people and always stuck in traffic jams. What to do in it? Only . But the other day, this is what happened. A harsh dry voice pulled me out of the state of prayer that was at least accessible to me:

Female! You, you, pious, are baptized here, sitting here, I'm just addressing you!

This flicker of yours annoys me, ”he said. - If you need it so much, turn away so that I do not see.

Is it unpleasant for you to see how a person signs himself with the sign of the cross? - I said with some difficulty, deliberately forcing myself to just such a formulation - in order to overcome cowardice and false shame in myself.

I will not quote here what my vomit in response, shall we say, vis-a-vis, I will not quote. However, I am - rarely - happy with my own behavior. I said loudly and clearly to the whole salon:

You are just a boor. In this case, you have not demonstrated anything other than your own stupidity and bad manners.

The rest of the passengers were indifferent. I once again crossed myself, overcoming this time the natural fear of black words, the fear of blasphemy. The militant atheist, however, was silent. I could be convinced that my rebuff was really a rebuff.

No, I'm not bragging. Because this is a very simple case in fact. And, perhaps, the least painful - of those that lie in wait for us today. Here, in this case, everything is clear: here is black, it is against white. And the fact that you, too, turned out to be against black, is not your merit, but your happiness and your protection at the same time. By the grace of God, this black is far from you: you found yourself face to face with him only for a few minutes.

Other cases are more complicated. I know a lot of people who (if only they do not hide it tightly!) Are subjected to constant attacks: at work, and in a friendly, friend, family circle, and, finally, in the closest circle - in the family. In most cases, these acquaintances of mine become victims - not so much of deliberate, deliberate aggression or even lack of content (I suspect that my fellow traveler is in a minibus of the possessed), but, on the contrary, of a very low meaningfulness of the actions and words of a neighbor, lethargy and laziness of his consciousness, poverty inner peace and such a consequence of this poverty as despondency and chronic irritability. From the same root, from the same mental underdevelopment - bad manners, inability to respect the feelings of another person. Moreover, these feelings seem completely incomprehensible and far-fetched, they are simply beyond the imagination of such an aggressor. And from all this comes the "velvet" home, kitchen, country, table terror.

“They have a constant desire to pick me up, a fool who, for some reason,“ walks there to beat him, ”- this is how his beloved husband expresses himself. And I am silent ... "

They both gather at the table and get turned on, as if they have nothing more to talk about, - one of my parish acquaintances told about her own husband, his brother and wife, the brother of this wife and some other relative, - a stream of blasphemy, and completely idiotic, illiterate, and a constant desire to pull, pick, kick me, a fool who for some reason “walks there bowing to beat” - this is how the beloved spouse expresses itself. And I am silent, because ... you know, I do not know how, I can not, I am not able to talk about it ... with anyone, except for my own people, those who are without me, and understands everything better than me.

I thought that being silent in this case is not so bad at all. Silence, with the firmness and consistency of the actions of the silent, sometimes convinces better than any words. And if not convincing, then, at least, more likely than words, will make such an opponent think.

But what if it is impossible to keep silent? A friend of mine came to a jubilee meeting of fellow students. After a small official part, under the clink of glasses and clatter of glasses, he was deliberately loudly asked if he was ashamed to belong to “this ROC” after the “shameful inquisition process” over the well-known punk group with an obscene English name. The friend replied: "No, not at all ashamed," and calmly took up the fried shrimp. He realized that it was not about words that could in no way be convincing with a guarantee, that is, for everyone, but precisely in this calmness.

But where to get it, this calmness, how to achieve it? It’s not that easy in reality.

“When they bring you to the synagogues, to principalities and authorities, do not worry how or what to answer, or what to say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that hour what you ought to say” (Luke 12: 11-12). We are not yet being led "to the bosses", but the world wants to judge us, is trying to do it. So to what extent are the words of Christ addressed to his disciples applicable to us today? What does it depend on?

Not so long ago, an episode happened in my life that helped me - not abstractly, not theoretically, no, empirically - to comprehend, albeit in part, because I can hardly ever claim to be complete. Between me and my three interlocutors, who, by the way, are also believers, Orthodox people, a dispute broke out about the attitude towards migrants. I said that since we want to be Christians, every person should be for us, first of all, a person, and not a migrant; that in no case should we support and encourage an aggressive attitude towards any person of non-Slavic appearance. They answered me in three voices and very expressively. They called me a naive fool "with pink glasses and wings," who couldn't see what was happening, didn't understand the scale of the threat, "found someone to feel sorry for," and so on. Hearing that skinheads "can actually be understood", I exploded and screamed in a wild voice, which made a real gift to my opponents: "Oh, you are really tolerant!" After that, I just wanted to cry. There was a feeling of loneliness, incomprehension and even persecution ...

But these are personal feelings! These are the experiences of a person who does not find a common language with others and cannot protect ... what, whom? Not migrants, of course, no. And something like that, internal, vulnerable, not tolerating aggression and anger. “Whom and what did you defend? - I asked myself in the evening after this conflict. - People? The truth? Justice? Christ finally? No. You defended yourself. It is from here that your soreness, instability, anxiety, weakness - and your cry. We always scream from weakness, from helplessness. When a person stands for Christ and Christianity, he does not shout. Why? Because this very circumstance makes him strong. "

In order to be calm and always be able to defend our faith, we must defend it, and not ourselves. And regarding oneself - to understand that we are already protected by the Lord.

In order to be strong, calm and always be able to defend our faith, we must defend it, and not ourselves. And regarding ourselves - to understand that we are already protected in the most reliable way, as we ourselves would never have been able to protect ourselves or our neighbor in our life.

So, trust in the Father, the awareness of the reliability of protection and the stability of our own position - stability that does not come from ourselves and in no way is our merit - that is what we need. By the way, this will help us avoid unnecessary conflicts, be balanced, adequately respond to the arguments of the interlocutor, find a common language with him and talk about the same subject, and not about different ones, as it was in our dispute about migrants (which I understood hindsight, of course!).

Of course, it is not for me to teach the reader that inner work by means of which, for a start, trust in God is achieved. Here I can only learn, not teach. Fortunately, we have enough teachers and textbooks - there is a huge literature, and there are not so few living pastors who are quite capable of suggesting something in time.

However, in any school, in any classroom or classroom, pupils can, and once should, help each other learn by sharing discoveries. It is only on this basis that I dare to state something here. For example, what seems important to me not to forget. The process of such training is a single, indivisible, complex, everything here depends on everything. "For whoever wants to build such a house, he must strengthen it from everywhere and erect walls on four sides, and not only take care of one side, leaving the others in neglect, because otherwise he will not receive any benefit," wrote one of our teachers. Abba Dorotheos, at the end of the 6th century.

I will continue talking about how we defend our faith, because I have not yet said what hurts the most. The most difficult, difficult and, most importantly, painful thing is to defend our faith precisely when we ourselves are completely killed by bitterness and shame. Shame for the very same thing evil in the church fence, about which the great Christian of the godless era, Sergei Fudel, wrote in his book "The Church of the Faithful". Shame for the actions, for the behavior of people who belong to the Church. It's not so scary when they are lay people. More terrible when priests or monks. And it is absolutely bad when the bishops. I do not want to use the word "individual", because it is from the sanctimonious Soviet vocabulary: "individual cases, individual shortcomings." Evil in the church fence is evil, and it is impossible to just take it and separate it from church life: it is, they say, somewhere out there, and we are here. It inflicts lasting wounds that cannot be healed by time - not only to those who have become direct victims or witnesses, but to each of us and the Church as a whole.

And what should we answer to people who ask us questions about this completely real evil? People who see only evil because they have not discovered the Good for themselves? People who for some reason need, need to spread the received negative information to the whole Church: “Yes, they are there all such, you didn't know? .. "

A clear understanding of certain things is required. Namely, that every sin in the Church is not a sin of the Church, but against the Church.

Here we need genuine courage - we will not be afraid this time of this pretentious word. Courage and knowledge, a clear understanding of certain things. Namely, that every sin in the Church is not a sin of the Church, but against the Church... These are the words of Archpriest Valentin Sventsitsky. But they were quoted more than once by Sergei Fudel. The already mentioned book by Sergei Iosifovich "The Church of the Faithful" is not at all a soothing book, no, not the kind that I read - and it relieved my heart: "How good is it really here, Lord!" Fudel, who carried his faith through the GULAG, did not accept the declaration of Metropolitan Sergius (Stragorodsky), but later overcame the temptation of schism, writes about the falsity of such peace, about the fact that the evil that lives within the walls of the Church is by no means covered by the external fulfillment of church requirements: "Why didn't the saints have such amazing calm about the Church?" - asks the author of the book "Church of the Faithful". A person who is formally in the Church and even in the priestly dignity, in fact, does not belong to it, if he does not live according to the commandments of Christ. And sin separates each of us from the Church, which is why the priest says, covering us with the epitrachilus: "... reconcile and unite him to your holy Church." Evil in the Church is her dark counterpart; and since the time of the Savior's earthly life, the devil has been trying to fight the Church, that is, with Him, from within, with the hands of this dark double. Is it by chance, asks the author of the book about the Church, that the image (and, accordingly, of Judas dipping his piece in salt) in Russian churches is traditionally placed above the royal gates? Evil is nearby, in the same place where the Eucharist is celebrated. But - Sergei Iosifovich quotes Saint Cyprian of Carthage: “If tares find themselves in the Church, then this should not constitute an obstacle to our faith and love. We ourselves should not deviate from the Church because we see tares in the Church, but we only need to try so that we can be wheat (see: Matthew 13: 24-30 - the parable of the Lord of the field, tares and wheat ) ".

Someone will say: everything is so, but is it possible to explain this to a person who is absolutely not disposed to listen to us?

It is impossible to explain anything to a person who is not disposed to listen, who already does not trust us in advance. could not explain anything to Count Tolstoy! Only the one who, even with outward aggressiveness, sometimes painful, internally desires a good answer and is ready to accept it, will receive and accept. Based on this: sometime you need to come to terms with the fact that we are not understood or not heard, and sometime not to lose hope of being heard.

We will try to answer in detail the question: prayer passing by the temple on the site: site - for our esteemed readers.

Prayer when passing by the church

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Prayer of the one going to church

In those who rejoiced over those who spoke to me, let us go into the house of the Lord. But I will enter Thy house with the multitude of Thy mercy, O Lord, and I will worship Thy holy temple in Thy passion. Lord, insist on me thy righteousness, my enemy for the sake of correcting my way before you; without stumbling, I will glorify the One Godhead, the Father and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and forever, and forever and ever. A min.

As I go to Thy house, I will worship Thy holy temple in Thy passion. O Lord, insist on me with Thy righteousness, my enemy, for the sake of me, correct my way in the sight of You: as truth is in their mouths, their heart is vain, the grave is open their throats, their tongues are flattering. Judge them, O God, that they will fall away from their thoughts; according to the multitude of their wickedness, I will wipe out, for I am bitter against Thee, O Lord. And let all those who trust in You rejoice, rejoice forever, and having dwelt in them, and boast in You who love Your Name. As you bless the saint. Lord, as with the weapon of goodwill you have crowned us.

Entering the temple, you should stop near the door and make three bows with prayers:

God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

O God, cleanse me, a sinner, and have mercy on me.

Having created me, Lord, forgive!

Prayer before confession

Lord, help me to repent honestly.

Prayer for forgiveness of forgotten sins

In the good of the Lord, since forgetting your sins is a sin, I have sinned in everything to You, the One Heartfelt; You and forgive me everything according to Your love for mankind; it is dark and the greatness of your glory is manifested, when you do not repay sinners according to their deeds, for you are glorified forever. A min.

What is the correct way to pray when passing by the temple?

Hello, father. God save me for the answer, I recently wrote to you. Sorry for this possibly stupid question. I know that when approaching the temple, a person must cross himself, pray, bow. Please say the prayer “I will enter your house. »Need to be read directly at the entrance to the temple? And if I pass by the temple, what is the right way to pray? Do I need to do this several times a day if I live opposite the temple? (Some believers are baptized several times a day, passing by, but I don't quite understand why).

What prayer to read when passing by the church?

I do not know what prayer should be read when passing by the Church. Personally, I don't even baptize when passing by her. Previously, I was mentally baptized passing by similar temple monuments, I don’t know how sinful, right or wrong, to be mentally baptized. But I think it's better to cross yourself mentally once more than to show off to start baptizing and bowing.

I think any. If your prayer is sincere, God will appreciate your golden and sincerely believing words. The main thing is that faith should be in the heart. I don’t know how true and right from the Christian point of view he prays in his own words, but if you are with God, He forgives you everything and gives you more than what you deserve, if you ask in prayer with Faith.

Statutory - this Psalm 83 can be read.

Otherwise, there can be any prayer.

The purpose of prayer is to express love for the Lord.

At least a tiny recollection that love is not sex, is not money and other vicious so-called "values" and requests that are habitual to us, valuable for us. Most often, we sin with the constant "Give me this and that"

I personally like to start expressing my love for the Lord with a feeling of gratitude to Him, literally, for everything.

There is even such an akathist. It is called "Glory to God for everything" and belongs to the pen of Bishop Tryphon (Turkestanov). If there is time, I always read it.

Our common problem is that for the most part our whole life consists of one phrase - “Lord, give.” We, as little children, all the time rear the same thing.

At the same time, we do not always have a desire to give something to the Lord. While this something may be our gratitude. If we are not always ready to express this gratitude to people (WHOM WE SEE), then what can we say about the Lord (WHOM WE DO NOT SEE)?

Are you baptized while walking or driving past a church?

I live quite far from work, and a significant part of my evening is spent in a minibus - stuffy, dark, packed with people and always stuck in traffic jams. What to do in it? Just pray. But the other day, this is what happened. A harsh dry voice pulled me out of the state of prayer that was at least accessible to me:

That which is my answer, let's put it this way.

1. Hello, father. I would like to know your opinion about my situation and consult. I am 25 years old, my son is a year old, we live in Moscow with my mother and my grandmother (after my mother). We are all Orthodox and baptized, I try to go to church and fasting, although at the same time I also lead a secular life. I have no husband. Part of my family (father, brother, daddy's grandfather and grandmother, aunt and family) have been living in Germany for almost 18 years. They are all Jews, and brother, father and grandfather are Orthodox Jews, especially in recent years, during the Soviet period of their life, they were atheists, but there they came to religion. With the birth of my son last year, the religious conflict in our family worsened so much that my grandfather did not call, did not congratulate him on the birth of his son, and in general, we have never spoken since then. And in conversations with my father and brother, I always feel some kind of regret, like as if they tolerate me, because I am their sister and daughter, but they pity me very much, like a sick person.

Thanks for the intelligible answer and advice.

And then I, by intuition, all my life.

so it is by intuition that it is usually correct - that is why it is intuition 🙂

In general, of course. But sometimes I would like to self-report. Valentin Berestov taught me one thing, helps me to orient myself. I'll find it in the warehouse now.)

p_tzareff on October 24th, 2008 12:58 pm (UTC) This is true, but with an addition: by intuition, it is usually wrong.

Oh, familiar. From showing off, it helps to live in places where you will not surprise anyone with the sign of the cross on the street. And from shame too. You start to take it for granted and there is no inner frustration.

What about this "motive" -.

"Yes, no, please ..." - I said, but the mood faded.

Then he remembered this and thought that one phrase could completely ruin the mood.

Do not be offended, dear Vladimir, but I was very jarred by your answer to the Administrator. It was as if you sensed the enemy and were in a hurry to deal with him with biting expressions. What for? Why, instead of gratitude, at least for this site, which is made by the same Administrator for all of us, you print it.

Okay, sorry for the emotions.

Essentially: I don't think you always need to be baptized. If you will allow me, one more sketch from my life. I was a witness, as a woman, passing by a St. Petersburg cathedral.

Nothing terrible happens, Mikhail, just an annoying circumstance. You will be in confession, tell the priest about this, and henceforth try not only to be baptized correctly, but in general to study the Orthodox faith more deeply, this is a very great help for the soul.

Abbot Nikon (Golovko)

How and when to make the sign of the cross? What to say while doing this? Should you always say amen after prayer?

Maxim, after prayer you should always say “Amen”. Amen is a confirmation of what we have read and that we accept it and agree with it. In the church, you should try to be baptized.

How not to cross the line between “show off” faith and shame?

in this, perhaps, conscience should come to the rescue, which helps to “identify” this line between pharisaism and false shame. If these boundaries are adhered to only “externally”, without feeling at the same time with your conscience, then you can again come only to external Christianity, which is not good, however. You need to awaken your conscience, because it is not for nothing that they say that conscience is the voice of God. However, conscience must be separated from secret pride and pride, touching which one can experience some "remorse" and shame. Conscience is something else, given by God to our soul. I really like one poem ... here it is:

Conscience, bursting into my bell tower, does not allow Sleep,

Heart torments unbridled pain, The bell beats.

The heart bell is ready to crack ... "Conscience, calm down!"

And from the tired chest rushes: "Get up and pray!"

“Conscience is enough! I can't take it anymore. Stop calling! "

Hello! Please tell me if you need to be baptized or say any words while walking or driving past the church. Thank you.

Prot. Vladimir Bushuev:

Good afternoon, Anna! Yes, there is such a pious custom to pray briefly (Lord have mercy; Most Holy Theotokos, save us) and be baptized near the temple. An exception happens when unbelievers around us can embarrass us and blaspheme a shrine with mockery. Then you can pray in your mind without being baptized.

View Full Version: Are you baptized while driving past the church?

Pages: 2 3 4 5 6

About a year ago, I began to notice that many drivers passing by the church cross themselves. I didn’t notice this before, but over the past year I have seen such scenes all the time.

I have nothing against it, on the contrary, it is good that people believe and are probably getting better, I myself am a believer in my heart, but for me this is somewhat unusual, such a public manifestation of my faith.

Are you baptized (pray) while driving past the temple (going on the road)?

He is baptized who is already a slave in his soul and does not rely on himself, but asks from someone from above for help and protection.

March, in my (poorly enlightened) opinion, is a show-off. As in their time, crimson pajamas and a little later sports leotards, wherever possible.

There are very few believers, the rest are adherents. Someone who really is.

Is it necessary to be baptized when passing by the church, if it is without grace?

I had a custom to cross myself when I drove / walked past the church. What should I do now, in view of gracelessness?

If it is possible / necessary to be baptized, will I not lead people into temptation: “Look, the guy is baptized. Yes, I need to go to church more often. "

And in general, what is better: that people would go to church, fast, confess or not?

After all, without going to church, people can stop doing all this.

Father Oleg Molenko's answer:

This is a matter of faith and conscience for everyone. One eats and thanks God, the other does not eat and thus praises God. One, seeing an Orthodox-looking temple and a cross on it, overshadows himself with a cross in memory of the Lord and His cross, overlooking the fact of the seizure of the temple by heretics - and this does not sin. Another is jealous of the truth of God and demonstratively does not baptize in the temple of apostates - and this pleases God.

An Orthodox Christian, according to the rules of piety, passing by the temple, must stop, reverently cross himself with the sign of the cross and worship the temple of God, thereby giving glory to God our Lord Jesus Christ, who for our sake and for our salvation descended from heaven, incarnated from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became human. Was Crucified on the Cross for our sins. Buried, Resurrected, and Ascended into Heaven and Settled at the right hand of the Heavenly Father, so that after His second coming in glory with all the Saints and Angels, everyone would be judged according to his deeds. That is, by his worship, a Christian publicly confesses the faith of the Orthodox Church in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And about those who are ashamed of such a confession, the Lord said: “whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of His Father with the holy Angels” (Mark 8:38).

We are called Christians because we believe in God as the Son of God Himself taught us to believe.

When the soul desires it. Well, and sometimes forcing yourself to do this in DEEP SITUATIONS.

I heard that you need to be baptized before eating, and every time you even eat a pill or even a throat lozenge, and you need to cross not only yourself, but what you will eat.

Pious custom. However, there are all sorts of situations in life. Sometimes the sign of the cross can become “across the throat” of those sitting with you at the table. For example: the company sat down, people grabbed forks, began to chew the goodies, and suddenly ... You start praying and re-baptize all this. Here, forgive me, someone may smile, but someone will get a piece in the throat - it comes out, like a pig in your background. The law of love for one's neighbor is higher and fasting and prayer.

I also heard that one should be baptized when walking or driving past the altar of the Church, or even baptized on domes? And if you are in the company of atheists, for example, classmates from the university, then it's not worth it again.

Hieromonk Victorin (Aseev)

Good afternoon. A question about prayers. When I am going to go somewhere by car, I read a prayer to Nicholas the Wonderworker while driving. I read it every time I drive away from any place, even if I left the car for 5 minutes. I read, adding more of my own words. At first everything was fine, but now I read it all the time, moving away from any point, I read it partially or completely, I start reading without leaving, and continue, already starting the path. I often repeat some of these prayers right on the road, even when I am driving at a speed of 100 km. on the Moscow Ring Road. Is this normal, sometimes it seems to me that I read too much, I am baptized repeatedly, many times, from three to 15, I notice that this distracts me a little (not much, but still) from the road. How can I be if there is too much prayer reading? Inside, I understand that strength is not from quantity, but from quality, but I still feel insecure if I don't read everything completely, and repeatedly. What do i do? Can you read a lot?

Stanislav, it is enough to read a prayer once or twice a day. You don't need to read it all the time before every trip during the day. It is enough to be baptized three times. Get used to the Jesus Prayer. It can and should be read incessantly. It is convenient to read it on the road, at home, and in the car: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner."

Hieromonk Victorin (Aseev)

Father, bless, happy holiday! My question is: the majority of Orthodox people cross themselves in transport when they pass near the church, but due to my cowardice I cannot always do this in the presence of a large number of people, and in the presence of a not very churched friend I am completely shy. I can’t help myself ... What should I do in this case, is it worth to force myself, or will it still not be a sin? Will some unbelievers be tempted? Thanks in advance for your reply. Save me, God.

Anna

Anna, everyone has their own measure: those people who are baptized have their own, you have yours. You shouldn't be embarrassed by this. Being baptized while driving past a church is not as important as being a real Christian, a deeply churchly person, leading a pious lifestyle. This is what you strive for first of all, and where you apparently show your faith, and where to hide it, depends on the constitution of your soul.

Abbot Nikon (Golovko)

Hello! Explain, please, why the Orthodox used to switch from two fingers to three fingers when applying the cross? After all, we see two-fingered on the icons? I understand that we, ordinary laymen, do not need to bother with this, this is not the main thing. But after watching the movie "The Split" it became interesting to me to find out. Thanks in advance for your reply!

Galina

Hello Galina! In 1653, Patriarch Nikon began his reforms, which led to a split in the Russian Church. These reforms begin with a change in the way the fingers are folded when the sign of the cross is made: the two-finger (the two-finger sign of the cross), which was previously adopted in Russia, is replaced by the three-finger (the three-finger sign of the cross). Both methods of folding the fingers express the same content: in both cases, both the symbolism of the Trinity (signifying the Trinity) and the symbolism of duality (signifying the two natures of Christ - Divine and human) are expressed; however, in the previously accepted method of adding fingers, the idea of the Trinity was conveyed by a combination of the thumb with the ring and little fingers, and the idea of God-manhood - by a combination of the index and middle fingers, while in the new method of finger-folding, the idea of the Trinity is conveyed by a combination of the thumb, forefinger and middle fingers, and the idea of God-manhood - by a combination ring finger with little finger. Nikon's reforms did not concern the content - they concerned the form; nevertheless, they provoked an unusually strong reaction. Patriarch Nikon's motives are well known: he wanted to bring the Russian church rite into full conformity with the Greek one. The Greeks had three fingers, and it was natural to think that the Greeks retained the correct way of folding their fingers, while the Russians deviated from it. On the contrary, Nikon's opponents - the Old Believers - proceeded from the fact that the correct rite was preserved in Russia. Later research showed that the Old Believers were right: they kept the old Greek way of composing the finger, which was changed by the Greeks themselves. The sign of the cross with two fingers was adopted in Byzantium during the baptism of Rus and was naturally borrowed from there by the Russians. Apparently, the two-finger was replaced by the three-finger among the Greeks in the XII-XIII centuries. As for the icons, then you are mistaken: on the icons we see not two fingers, but a blessing gesture.

Priest Vladimir Shlykov

Hello! Father, tell me, please, is it possible to read prayers and be baptized silently, mentally? I know that it is right to pray aloud or in a whisper, and to be baptized by touching the body, but this is often not possible, but there is an inner need. The Lord and the Saints hear and feel our thoughts, right? Thank you in advance for your answer!

Svetlana

Svetlana, if there is nothing surprising and unusual in praying in your mind, that is, to yourself, then being baptized mentally is a rather strange thing. You can only be baptized with your hand, otherwise you shouldn't even invent it. God bless you.

Abbot Nikon (Golovko)

Hello dear father! A strange and unpleasant incident happened to me today, now I am walking through the forest, a woman is sitting, I asked her if it was possible to go down the path here, and she, without answering anything, began to baptize from me and say: "Lord, save and save from fake, "and quickly withdrew. Honestly, for the first time they disown me, and I really want to understand that it can be with me, that I need to be saved and preserved, and what can this be “fake? I could not attach any importance to this, but after these words, how -that has become creepy. You forgive me, maybe you know that it can be, I will be very grateful to you! Thank you!

Ekaterina

Catherine, any normal person will feel creepy in his soul from such a meeting in the forest! I don’t know what a "fake" is, and is there any point in finding out? Apparently, this woman is subject to some kind of wild superstition and mystical fears. Do not take it all to heart, try to even treat it all with humor.

Abbot Nikon (Golovko)

Valentine

Valentine, the main thing in prayer is our heart and mind. During prayer, we are baptized, if possible. You need to pray always and everywhere, and of course, it is not necessary to be baptized during prayer, if there is no such opportunity.

Hieromonk Victorin (Aseev)

Hello. Please tell me how to properly put a cross on a person with his back to you (when someone leaves or leaves)? Thanks in advance for your reply.

Galina

Galina, when you baptize not yourself, but someone or something, the cross is depicted as follows: first the hand moves up, then down, then left and right. And it doesn't matter if the person is facing you or with his back.

Abbot Nikon (Golovko)

Save me, God! Sorry to bother you. I do not know whether it is necessary to be baptized near temples, cemeteries, etc., when, for example, you go in some kind of transport, or pass by. I see older people getting baptized. But I am overcome by some kind of embarrassment, perhaps because I do not know the meaning of this tradition. Thank you for your responses.

Vita

When we pass or drive past a church, then, of course, we need to be baptized. Thus, we express our belonging to Orthodoxy, as if we say that we are Orthodox Christians, and we should not be ashamed of this.

Hieromonk Victorin (Aseev)

Hello. Tell me, my son has a congenital defect in his right hand, when he tries to be baptized, it doesn't work out very well, how can he be baptized after prayer? Thanks for the answer.

Sergei

Sergei, in this case, you can impose the sign of the cross on yourself with your left hand, that's okay.

Abbot Nikon (Golovko)

Hello! I wanted to ask you this. When you go to sleep, you have to cross your bed, right? And what and when can a layman still re-baptize? Thanks a lot!

Andrey

Andrey, when we go to bed, we must cross our bed! The cross is a symbol of victory over death, it is our protection. You can baptize your clothes, necessarily food. Also, before going to bed, especially if there are bad dreams, you can cross the room on four sides. You can cross almost everything, especially what threatens us, or if we are afraid of something or someone, but trying not to attract attention to ourselves.

Hieromonk Victorin (Aseev)

Hello! Please tell me if you need to be baptized during the reading of the akathist after each kontakion and ikos, or are baptized at the end of the reading of the entire akathist?

Julia

Julia, there is no special rule. This is your personal desire, as you please. Somehow we ourselves determine intuitively when we are baptized during prayer, as our heart tells. But in general, after each kontakion and ikos we are baptized, and at the end of the whole akathist we are baptized too.

Hieromonk Victorin (Aseev)

Bless, father. Do I need to be baptized and bow (bow) after each prayer from the morning and evening rules? Save you Lord.

Nail

Nail, you can be baptized and bow after each prayer. There is no definite time limit for when we are baptized and bowed down. As your heart tells you, according to your desire, do it when you want. Hieromonk Victorin (Aseev)

), and indeed can be everywhere and everywhere at the same time (unlike, for example, the same Allah), nevertheless, there are places and times of His special presence among people. It is difficult or even impossible for us to explain this by laws, for example, of physics or other natural sciences, because God is in principle indescribable and in our understanding is completely transcendental. But from the information that He Himself provided about Himself to mankind, today we know for sure that Christian, Orthodox churches are a special place of God's presence. Even many Christians today know this from personal experience.

However, this also does not mean that God needs such places based on his nature. This is precisely what He does not have. The Apostle Luke speaks about this frankly: “God, who created the world and all that is in it, He, being the Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in man-made churches and does not require the ministry of human hands, as if having need for something, Himself giving all life and breath and everything. " ( Acts 17:24, 25). Nevertheless, for the sake of people and their salvation, the Lord created and acquired for Himself with His own blood ( Acts 20:28) The Church, which is the pillar and statement of Truth ( 1 Tim. 3:15), so that now it remains the Body of Christ ( Count 1:24), to save all believers until the end of time "and the gates of hell will not prevail against her" ( Mt. 16, 18)

Of course, it is always worth distinguishing between the Church as a community of believers in the Holy Spirit, and the Church as a building for Christian worship. But in this case, it seems to me, there is no fundamental difference here and cannot be, because the Church in the general sense is the House of the Lord. Just as it is normal for a believer to go to church, it is normal for an unbeliever to see only walls and domes in the Church.

It is in the temple that people meet God face to face during Confession and Communion, as well as during the performance of other Sacraments and rituals of the Church over them and with them. That is why, even when passing by the church, Orthodox believers try with reverence to overshadow themselves with the sign of the Cross - that is, to bow down and honor the shrine by invoking the Grace of the Holy Spirit. Indeed, in reality, every Orthodox church, no matter how it looks: like a large cathedral, or like a very small house church, is a huge shrine of a planetary, worldwide scale.

Moreover. In our time, a full-fledged spiritual life is completely impossible without a person's participation in temple services. This means that - with rare exceptions - salvation itself is impossible today without a temple.

The famous quote from the Apostle Paul that our bodies are already the temple of the Holy Spirit ( 1 Cor. 3:16) does not at all mean that every person is certainly a bearer of God's Grace, and no longer needs a visible, physical external temple. Quite the opposite! This quote says about that potential, which all baptized Orthodox believers have.

In the same way, the Genesis writer the prophet Moses, talking about the creation of man in the eternal council of the Most Holy Trinity, emphasizes that man was created on "Image and likeness" Of God ( Genesis 1: 26-27). In the Orthodox, patristic interpretation of this passage, it is customary to consider the mental strength of a person - mind, will, feelings - under "image", and under "likeness" (that is, godlike) the potential for a person to use these forces and improve them as much as possible. Ultimately, it is the becoming of God or deification that is the goal of human life. The spiritual life of a person consists precisely in the fact that during his earthly life he must “acquire”, collect the grace of the Holy Spirit in various ways, offered by the Church.

But alas! Instead, people usually do just the opposite. They deliberately sin, and by this they not only do not acquire the life-giving gifts of God, and they do not make the body a temple, but do exactly the opposite. As you know, people almost with animal pleasure spend the grace that remains with them after visiting the temple, and turn their bodies into a dwelling and a dwelling place for demons. That is why the Church answers a completely idle question:"Why should I go to church if God is in my soul?"always answers with a smarter question: "Where did He come from there if you don't go to church?"

Even the outward veneration of an Orthodox church is in itself a tremendous Christian virtue, which teaches us reverence, humility, the right attitude towards sacred things, and even forces some of us to struggle with our own sinful feelings of shame or insecurity. Sadly, even some parishioners do not always have enough willpower to cross themselves in public, and boldly show their faith in Christ the Savior, as well as their own involvement in His Holy Church.

That is why, at the first opportunity, I not only advise others to sign themselves with the banner of the cross near an Orthodox church, but I do so myself, seeing this as a huge benefit for my own spiritual and physical health. ( Ps. 83: 2-11).

- Female! You, you, pious, are baptized here, sitting here, I'm just addressing you!

“This flicker of yours annoys me,” he said. - If you need it so much, turn away so that I do not see.

- Is it unpleasant for you to see how a person signs himself with the sign of the cross? - I said with some difficulty, deliberately forcing myself to just such a formulation - in order to overcome cowardice and false shame in myself.

Although ...

Oh, familiar. From showing off, it helps to live in places where you will not surprise anyone with the sign of the cross on the street. And from shame too. You start to take it for granted and there is no inner frustration.

One day I was late and stopped the car. We sat down and went. We drove along the embankment of the Neva, and here and there the domes of the temples were shown. The chauffeur fervently baptized himself on each. I looked at him with surprise (no, not condemning, but rather with joyful surprise). The driver turned and suddenly, with flashing eyes, said menacingly: “What? I do not like?.."
What for? Question to the priest

Number of records: 24

I incorrectly performed the sign of the cross during the ordinance of baptism. That is, it turns out, from top to right, from bottom to left, what is this? I was at the conversation, but no one told anything about it.

Maxim, after prayer you should always say "Amen". Amen is a confirmation of what we have read and that we accept it and agree with it. In the church, one should try to be baptized ...

How not to cross the line between “show off” faith and shame?

in this, perhaps, conscience should come to the rescue, which helps to "identify" this line between pharisaism and false shame. If these boundaries are adhered to only "externally", without feeling at the same time with your conscience, then you can again come only to external Christianity, which, however, is not good. You need to awaken your conscience, because it is not for nothing that they say that conscience is the voice of God. However, conscience must be separated from secret pride and pride, touching which one can experience some "remorse" and shame. Conscience is something else, given by God to our soul.

March

03.04.2012, 17:40

About a year ago, I began to notice that many drivers passing by the church cross themselves. I didn’t notice this before, but over the past year I have seen such scenes all the time.

I have nothing against it, on the contrary, it is good that people believe and are probably getting better, I myself am a believer in my heart, but for me this is somewhat unusual, such a public manifestation of my faith.

Are you baptized (pray) while driving past the temple (going on the road)?

Question No. 2054-2

Is it necessary to be baptized when passing by the church, if it is without grace?

Arnold Yudin, Vilnius, Lithuania
23/09/2005

It's scary not ...

We are called Christians because we believe in God as the Son of God Himself taught us to believe, ...

When, besides prayer, you need to be baptized?

And if you are in the company of atheists, for example, classmates from the university, then it's not worth it once again ...
