TO Mass Effect: Andromeda many fans of the series were skeptical from the very beginning. Three hours - normal flight

The main thought that comes to mind after an hour of playing: this is exactly the Mass effect that we fell in love with ten years ago. Pleasant "space" music on the main menu, the atmosphere of something majestic, recognizable style - familiar feelings arise from the first minutes. But it is important that, instead of exploring flora and fauna, collecting resources and fiddling with construction, the game pushes on the story.

Andromeda takes place in a new galaxy, six hundred years after the events of the trilogy. All this even causes a certain sadness - it becomes interesting how the stories of the beloved characters ended there!

Yes, judging by what we managed to see, there are previously boring things here: gathering, and the construction of outposts, and the study of the same type of space. But it doesn't seem like the game is abusing it yet. But we met a lot of interesting characters, took a quest to investigate the murder (which reminded us of one wonderful task from Knights of the old republic), and most of the time spent in dialogues with the characters.

Contrary to all fears, there are many interesting conversations: almost every more or less significant character can learn everything, from the situation at the station to his biography. At the same time, the story is served not only through dialogues - as in the previous parts, the NPCs around are constantly communicating, revealing the details of the world, and the party members do not seem to shut up and comment on almost everything.

As in the first part, the battles are not yet inspiring. But I want to believe that the situation will improve over time.

I am glad that the atmosphere of the original has been preserved. Local space station The Nexus resembles Citadel both in appearance and in content - all these turians, asari, krogan, salarians look and speak the same, and their interracial problems have not disappeared even after the galaxy change. Even the weapons in the local store remained the same: M-8 "Avenger", sniper rifle "Viper" and so on. As if there was no break of six (and for someone six hundred!) Years.

We enjoyed exploring the new ship, The Tempest. It has many rooms and characters for conversations, and also a pleasant atmosphere. home comfort... At such moments, you remember your first visits to the Normandy, which after three games has become almost a sacred place for many players. I would like to believe that the same fate awaits "The Tempest".

There are references to old characters and events, we counted several at the very beginning.

In general, it feels like Andromeda most of all resembles the first part of the series. And it's not just that we again have to drive an all-terrain vehicle across unexplored planets and collect items that can be processed into gel. It's just that the new game seems to give Mass Effect fans an opportunity to be a pioneer again.

Yes, the setting is familiar, but, as in the original, the players find themselves in a completely new place, meet new characters, and this time the galaxy is completely different and is fraught with many secrets. You can also draw parallels between Shepard's (or Miss Shepard's) lines and the Ryders. If the commander took on the burden by becoming the first human "spectrum", then the main character or the heroine of Andromeda - "pioneers". Researchers that must explore a new galaxy for them and find a place that could be called a new home. And here, too, you feel on the threshold of something majestic, when there are many discoveries and achievements ahead.

I would like to believe that this feeling will not disappear. At least until Andromeda disappoints.

First problems

True, this does not mean at all that we did not find any shortcomings. From everything that I managed to see, two things were still not pleasant - this is the action and the technical implementation. The local combat system seems a bit chaotic, but it hasn't really been possible to “feel” it yet. The weapon in the hands is almost not felt, hits on enemies, be it bullets or melee strikes, too. The cover system is now automatic: the hero himself attaches himself to certain places. But it works strangely: it is often impossible to understand whether you are hiding or not, and it is not always possible to force the character to take the desired position.

After arriving, the would-be colonialists faced a huge number of problems.

Those who will probably not hurt all this are biotic lovers. Dash at great speed into a crowd of enemies, the ability to grab and throw the enemy - all this is felt and looks even better than before. Once more of these skills are unlocked, playing this style is likely to be very fun.

As regards the technical implementation, everything is predictable: the problems were visible even in the demos of the game. Most of all, the facial animation is upsetting: the characters' eyes are completely lifeless, as if hollowed out of stone and painted with gouache, eyelashes are almost invisible, the skin color of some comrades is unnatural, and their facial expressions are wooden.

  • Game World: It's really fun to explore a new galaxy. Strange plants, creatures and objects force you to hold the scanner at the ready, large levels allow you to roam with a jetpack - by the way, a nice thing. Perhaps after a while all this will get terribly bored, but so far so good.
  • Plot: Andromeda's introduction is rather controversial, but after a while the story begins to unfold and look more promising. What happened on the Nexus, what happened to the Arks, what happened to [spoilers] - there are many questions, the answers will hopefully be interesting.
  • Combat system: Compared to the original trilogy, the battles have clearly become more dynamic, the use of a jetpack looks really justified.

Which is already bad

  • ANIMATION: amazing thing. If you read subtitles (Andromeda has no Russian voice acting), then problems with animation will easily pass you by - you don't pay attention to them at a quick glance. But if you start to listen to English speech and follow the facial expressions of the characters, then very quickly you realize that the animation in Andromeda was written either from robots or was done with some very crooked hands. Yes, everything is so bad.
  • Character Editor: BioWare has managed to put together an editor that makes it very easy to create a monster and very difficult to get a decent looking character. Even if you give your best and create Ryder, vaguely resembling a person, the game can throw you a couple of surprises: it turned out that our hero's eyelids do not close his eyes, but pass through them. Yes, he can scare the ketts with one blink. I wonder why there is so much makeup in the editor?
  • Inventory system: we may not understand something, but in Andromeda you cannot buy weapons (armor, whatever) from the merchant, immediately go into the inventory and use the received equipment. We'll have to walk to a special station and change equipment there. Incredibly annoying. To make matters worse, you cannot change your teammates' equipment at all.
  • Combat system: yes, it also has disadvantages. Now partners can only indicate the place where they should move. The use of weapons, the use of skills - none of this. And also early access is a chance to assess the capabilities of your computer: whether it can handle graphics and on what settings.


So let's start in order.

What can I say. High graphics settings, not to mention "ultra", my old man, of course, does not pull. But with the average copes well. If you are not a geek and do not feel an urgent need to play at maximum speed, then, in order not to worry about performance, your PC should approximately meet the recommended system requirements specified in the properties of the game on the Origin service. In my opinion, the capabilities of a video card of the level of Nvidia 900 series with three gigabytes random access memory on board, for a comfortable game with high settings should be enough. Of course, I'm talking about stationary PCs. I can't say anything about laptops, because I don't consider them a gaming platform - here you act at your own peril and risk.


A few words about the game itself. So far, I only managed to twist the settings and visit a couple of locations. The plot of the plot is as follows: the ship of the colonists went beyond the Milky Way in search of a new home for humanity and other races. For us, the game begins at the moment when the ship arrives at one of the specially selected planets, but encounters an unexpected obstacle. It soon becomes clear that we are not the first here: according to tradition, the Mass Effect universe, unlike the real one, is rather crowded.

As in previous parts, we can play both for a man and for a woman (no, this is not Commander Shepard, his story is over). It is also possible to create a character from scratch using the editor. But I do not advise you to do this, do not waste time. The editor was unpleasantly surprised: the characters turn out to be unsympathetic with strange eyes and facial expressions. In general, according to reviews, players have the most complaints about the animation of faces and movements.

As with most BioWare games, Mass Effect: Andromeda will feature gay and lesbian characters with whom the player can enter into a relationship. In the previous parts, this, if desired, could be avoided. But everything in the world is changing, be careful. In this regard, I recall how ten years ago, when the first game in the series was released, a scandal erupted in the United States over a video game with same-sex sex between a human woman and an alien. Moreover, the same video with the participation of a man did not cause any complaints then. Since then, video games have only become more outspoken. The Andromeda developers promised a variety of relationships. Well, let's see.


Locations in structure and construction resemble those that were in Dragon Age: Inquisition from the same studio. Personally, I hope that the relationship between the two games will be limited to this: the "Inquisition" was too ambiguous, exhausting the players with its countless repetitive tasks.


In general, the intermediate conclusion is this: this, of course, must be played. Firstly, it's fantastic - a rare guest even in the world of video games. Secondly, Action / RPG. Thirdly, this is the Mass Effect. One or the wrong - the question, in this case, is of secondary importance. As they say, time and play will tell. But at some point at the very beginning, when I saw deep space, walked through the spaceship, looked out the window and landed on a distant, but not lifeless planet, it beat faster: "Chewie, we're home."

Finally, fourthly, we have been waiting for this for five long years! This argument alone would be sufficient for correct conclusions.

My ten hour trial period ended just before the game was fully released. He did not reveal even a hundredth of the plot and possibilities, but allowed him to evaluate the Mass Effect and make a decision on the purchase full version... Yes, facial animations are kind of terrible; Yes, the birthmarks of DragonAge: Inquisition, no, no, but they are striking. But all this seems such trifles against the backdrop of a unique adventure that it’s even embarrassing to participate in a discussion unleashed on the Internet. Mass Effect is the only way to leave traces on the dusty paths of distant planets, even if you are a member of the cosmonaut corps. And from the realization of this it becomes very sad.


So, I promised to reveal some details of the gameplay and the universe. Let's start with the leveling and combat system, which are much more interconnected than we are used to from the experience of the original trilogy. It is a little disappointing here the lack of speaking and diplomatic skills, which connoisseurs love so much. role-playing games... In practice, this means that most of the issues we have to solve with the help of force. Here, perhaps, lies the main change regarding the trilogy: there is no longer a clear distinction between a soldier, a biotic or an engineer. Nothing prevents the development of all branches of abilities. Moreover, at any time they can be reset using a device on spaceship and redistribute again. The hardest thing to get used to is that Mass Effect is no longer a cover shooter. The equipment was equipped with a jetpack, thanks to which you can quickly move around the level, including vertically, hover over the surface and pour fire on the enemy, or collapse with all biotic power.

Rides on the space rover "Nomad" (analogue of "Mako" from the first part) leave a pleasant impression, the controls are comfortable and responsive. It also provides protection from a hostile environment and fast movement over long distances, as well as the collection of resources.


But to assess the interaction with other characters and partners, the allotted ten hours were clearly not enough. But, they say, their missions to loyalty are traditionally one of the most interesting in the game. I willingly believe.

Among the weaknesses, I will note not the most outstanding artificial intelligence opponents and the already mentioned facial animations. For some reason, I was especially unlucky with these female characters. I strongly advise against playing as a girl. And even the character editor will not help here: it will only get worse (unless you want to laugh for the sake of playing a freak). Over time, everything will probably be fixed with patches, but until then, lovers of individual images should be patient.

On Monday, the first ratings of the game from specialized publications began to appear. Most journalists took Andromeda positively.
