Polymer putty on wood for outdoor use. Exterior wood putty for crack filling

Wood putty is used to seal holes, bumps, crevices and depressions in wood.

Wood putty is divided into three types:

- based on water (acrylic),

- on a varnish basis,

- based on alabaster.

In the past, solvent-based wood putties were very popular. Such putties can be cleaned with acetone or diluted with varnish thinners.

On the basis of alabaster, it is possible to purchase in the form of a powder, which then, according to the instructions, must be mixed with water.

Now the most common water-based wood putties. They can be washed off with water, they are environmentally friendly and very easy to use. Also, acrylic putties do not dry out so quickly in the containers in which they are stored, that is, it is possible to use them again if necessary. Also, one more important feature of wood putties on water is their excellent adhesive properties and the absence of fumes from the solvent.

Wood putty step by step:

  • First you need to thoroughly clean the surface under the putty. It is necessary to remove all dust and all dirt, for example with a dry rag.
  • Prime the places where the putty will be applied. Let the primer dry for about 12 hours.
  • Take a spatula, apply a small amount of putty on it and close the hole. If the hole is not deep, then simply smooth the putty with a spatula.

If the gap is deep and wide, then you will need to apply putty several times and give it time to dry. Otherwise, if you put a large ball of putty material into a deep slot, it will crack later due to uneven hardening. Therefore, the putty must be applied in thin layers.

Another feature of wood putty: it is necessary that the putty material protrudes slightly above the surface of the putty hole, as it shrinks when dried.

Notice! Putty on wood needs to be worked quickly, because, in the fresh air, it dries quickly and becomes less plastic.

  • The next step after the putty has dried is to clean the place of putty with fine-grained sandpaper so that it is flush with the entire wooden surface.
  • After sanding the puttied surface, the product is completely ready for applying the following coatings.

Wood putty color selection

There are three options for adjusting the color of putty on wood

First, the simplest and most common option is to purchase putty of the color you need in the store.

Second an option is to tint the putty material yourself while it is in liquid form.

Third an option is to tint an already dried and sanded patch.

If the furniture is covered with paint after puttying, then you don’t have to worry about the color of the patch. The color of the paint will cover the color of the putty.

Well, if you want to apply a stain on top of the putty, then you will have to work on color selection, since the putty does not absorb the stain as much as it does with paint, and the color of the patch will be different from the color of the entire product. Among the many colors of putty on wood that are currently on the market, you can easily choose the right one. But be careful, because when dry, putty can give a different color. It is best to pick up the color on a waste piece of wood surface that will be slightly damp. With such a little secret, you will be able to match the color as closely as possible. Also, if the hole in our wood is impressive, then it will be necessary to apply the structure of wood fibers with a knife to imitate the texture of wood. So our patch will turn out to be completely invisible.

It is made from wood flour (small sawdust) and an oil-adhesive or simply adhesive composition. They can also be part of varnish or drying oil for a better bond.

Do-it-yourself wood putty

You can make your own wood putty at home. To do this, you will need fine pumice, casein, linseed oil, borax, water, gelatin, turpentine oil and ammonia. All these ingredients must be mixed and heated in a water bath to 90 degrees until the mass becomes homogeneous. Allow the mixture to cool slightly and you can get to work. Such putty with its qualities is not nearly inferior to the store. "Home" putty should be used all at once, since it does not have the ability to be stored.

With such not very sophisticated methods, you can transform your wooden surface and it can still serve you.

How useful was the information for you?

Wooden products, houses made of wood and floors made of this natural material have always been popular. In fact, it is one of the first building materials in human history. Unfortunately, for all its merits, wood is not characterized by high strength, and sometimes unsightly cracks and holes spoil all beauty. Putty on wood allows you to quickly mask any surface defects, returning it to its former appearance.

Wood putty is used to hide all sorts of minor wood defects, such as cracks, cracks, voids, holes left by nails, etc. There are several types of such decorative putty, depending on the composition. Manufacturers also produce different shades of putties to match different types of wood as closely as possible (oak, cherry, walnut, pine, etc.)

Solvent putty

Solvent-based putty has been used for a long time in the woodworking industry by both amateurs and professional carpenters. This was the first type of putty, during the operation and experiments on which all other varieties were invented.

Solvent-based formulations are highly durable, but may be chemically unsafe and have an unpleasant odor. Another thing is water-based putties.

Water-based putty

Water-based putty is completely safe for humans, animals and the environment. They are very easy to use, flexible and practically odorless. To remove excess water putty, you do not need to rub it with turpentine or acetone, as in the case of its "progenitor" - just wipe the surface with a damp cloth.

Unlike solvent-based formulations, water putty dries in a jar much more slowly, therefore it has a longer shelf life after the package is leaking. High adhesive ability allows you to apply putty even on a polished surface.

Characteristics of water-based putty:

  • effectively hides defects;
  • can be used for grouting floorboard joints;
  • does not emit harmful chemicals, even when heated;
  • immune to moisture;
  • durable;
  • resistant to temperature extremes, moreover, putty can protect wood from fire;
  • high elasticity allows you to model any surface texture.

All of the above characteristics appear only after the composition has completely solidified and in the case of proper application.

Oil-based putty

If you need an outdoor putty for wood - get only oil. It is perfect for processing facades before painting. It has a powerful water-repellent effect and calmly tolerates adverse climatic conditions. Any other composition will quickly crack and crumble.

The abundance of different shades allows you to choose the plaster by color and leave the natural texture of wood without overlapping it with paint.

Oil plaster for outdoor use is available in containers weighing from 0.5 kg to 15 kg, which is very convenient if you need to process a large facade.

Polymer putty

Polymer or acrylic putty is very popular today and is used for almost any construction or repair work. This is due to its impeccable performance characteristics - durability, elasticity, lack of shrinkage, etc.

Due to the presence of polymers and plasticizers in the composition, putty can be used both for finishing dry rooms and wet ones (kitchen, bathroom, bath). It is able not only to repel moisture and endure temperature changes, but also to withstand heavy loads. For this reason, polymer putty is ideal for working with wooden floors (parquet, solid board).

Characteristics of acrylic putty on wood:

  1. High elasticity - the mixture fills even the smallest cracks and voids, it can be used to clog the joints of boards in parquet.
  2. No shrinkage - unlike other types, it is enough to apply putty once, and it will retain its shape after drying.
  3. Durability - depending on the operating conditions, the coating can last from 3 to 10 years or longer.
  4. The price of polymer-based wood putty is noticeably higher than oil or water, but the amount will pay off in the first years of use - when other putties crack and crumble, the polymer will last for many years.
  5. Wide color palette.
  6. Environmentally friendly (can be used in sanitary areas).
  7. Reduces dust accumulation.
  8. Freezes quickly.

How to choose putty

Agree, it is completely unacceptable to think that the entire range of wood putties will be equivalent to each other, whether it be solvents, polymers or a water base. A good putty should fill all the cracks, harden quickly and not shrink. Also, it should be easy to grind and not be pressed through with time. How to buy wood putty of decent quality and the most suitable for a certain type of work?

If you have to work with porous or fibrous woods, such as beech, oak or walnut, then it is better to give preference to bulk fillers. They are evenly distributed over the surface, filling the pores and practically not hiding the natural beauty of the wood texture. Such compounds are usually used before varnishing parquet or countertops.

With the help of putty, you can get interesting decorative effects, regardless of the type of wood with which you work. So, to highlight the beautiful porosity of the wood, use putty in a contrasting color or shade of the finish coat. If you want to focus on the beautiful fibers of the material, choose the color of the putty that best matches the finish. Today, Tikkurila wood putty is the most popular on the Russian market.

Useful advice: before applying, be sure to check how the putty will look. Spread a little on an inconspicuous area of the coating and wait for it to dry. So, the fibers of certain types of wood can rise when in contact with wet compounds. In this case, it is recommended to replace the water putty with a solvent-based putty.

How to get the best result:

  1. Test it out on a single piece of wood before tackling an expensive countertop or restoring an antique cabinet. Pay attention to all the details: pore filling, drying rate, shrinkage and ease of sanding.
  2. Buy several shades of putty - rarely anyone is able to determine the exact shade “by eye”, especially since after drying the putty may turn out to be slightly lighter or darker. It is often necessary to mix several colors of putty manually to achieve the optimal effect.
  3. Choose a putty of suitable density - water-based compounds are thicker and have good contact with any surfaces, unlike solvent-based putties. If you do not need to fill the voids in the wood very tightly, as is the case with solvent putties, choose polymer or water-based compounds.
Keep in mind that water putties dry for a rather long time - first a film appears on the surface, which inhibits the evaporation of moisture. For this reason, to fill deep cracks, it is better to use solvent-based putty, and apply it in several layers, each of which should be sanded before applying the next.
  4. Be sure to take into account the location of the surface to be treated. If this is outdoor work, then only oil putty can be used - water putty will not withstand the effects of the environment.

Wood floor putty

You can start puttying the floor covering both in the process of installing a new floor, and in the case of repairing an old one. If you notice that cracks have formed in the parquet, quickly cover them with putty of a suitable color.

If we are talking about the installation of a new floor covering, let's take the same parquet, then before finishing with varnish it must be puttied over the entire area. So the base will acquire integrity, become smooth, waterproof and as even as possible, and the varnish will “grab” with the coating better. Puttying in this case occurs with a spatula in small doses, carefully treating each crack.

Putty application rules

In order for the treated coating to be as natural as possible, certain conditions must be observed when working with plaster:

  1. It is possible to cover up cracks in a tree on the street at a temperature not lower than + 5C, otherwise the composition will be too viscous and will not be able to fill all the cracks with high quality. In this case, the air humidity should be no more than 75%.
  2. The surface to be treated should be prepared - clean the voids that will be filled with putty, brush off the dust with a damp cloth, remove the old paintwork if necessary and clean it with sandpaper.
  3. Apply putty with a plastic spatula or stainless steel spatula.
  4. If it is necessary to fill a deep crack larger than 1 cm, it is recommended to do this in several layers, allowing each previous one to dry properly. The thickness of each layer should not exceed 2-3 mm. Drying time depends on the composition of the putty (see instructions on the package).

Putty for painting

Contrary to popular belief, the paint does not mask, but, on the contrary, focuses even more on the defects of the wood (remember at least the awkwardly painted benches under each entrance). That is why wood putty is used for painting.

To obtain an even, beautiful coating, it is extremely important to follow the technology of preparing wood and applying putty:

  1. Remove old paintwork, if any.
  2. Thoroughly sand the surface first with #3 sandpaper, then #1 or #0 sandpaper.
  3. Bare untreated wood should be covered with drying oil.
  4. Wipe the sanded surface with a damp cloth to lift the fibers, then sand again.
  5. Brush off dust and putty joints, cracks and holes.
  6. Wait for the putty to dry, prime the surface and lightly sand it again so that there is a better adhesion to the paint.
  7. Wipe with a dry cloth and start painting.

How to remove old paint from wood

If you want to restore an old door or modernize a cabinet, you need to remove the old paintwork. In most cases, especially when it comes to painting from the times of the USSR, the paint holds very firmly. If the pigment layer is thin, try to remove it with sandpaper, if not, use one of the methods below.

How to remove paint:

Do-it-yourself putty for wood

You can buy putty for wood at any hardware store, but you can do it yourself, especially when it comes to large volumes. It is quite simple to make it, and for this you will need completely ordinary materials that every owner can find.

In addition, having mastered the recipe, you can vary the dosage of the ingredients, reducing the setting time or increasing the strength of the composition.

What ingredients are needed to prepare homemade wood putty:

  • drying oil - 500 ml;
  • animal glue 10% - 100 ml;
  • turpentine - 125 ml;
  • liquid desiccant - 25 ml;
  • liquid soap;
  • dry chalk powder.

If you need a large amount of putty, proportionally increase the amount of ingredients.

How to prepare putty:

  1. Pour animal glue into an aluminum pan and heat over low heat, stirring constantly.
  2. Add soap, desiccant, turpentine and drying oil, mix thoroughly until smooth.
  3. Sift chalk into a saucepan.
  4. Stir the mixture thoroughly until the consistency of thick sour cream.
  5. The only drawback is that such putty must be applied hot, so difficulties may arise with large volumes.

Alternative wood putty recipe:

If you need to putty a very deep hole, for example, behind a baseboard, it is better to use mounting foam to clog most of the space, and cover it with putty of a suitable color on top.

At home, wood floors have always been and will continue to be popular. In fact, wood is one of the first building materials in human history. For all its advantages, wood also has disadvantages. This is not too high strength, reaction to moisture and other disadvantages. Wood putty allows you to improve the properties of wood and hide defects on the surface.

Wood and putty

A variety of wooden products are processed with such materials. This includes old window frames, new hardwood and softwood, parquet and much more. With the help of such a composition, you can get some advantages.

So, a layer of putty on wood helps to prevent the absorption of moisture. As a result, the service life is significantly increased. So, due to the use of putty mixtures, it is possible to very successfully hide and mask all kinds of defects on the surface - various knots, cracks or chips. When the composition dries, a completely transparent layer forms on the surface - the natural structure of the wood is preserved. Putties for parquet penetrate very deeply into the material, filling in all the irregularities, and also prevents pollution.

The main argument against coating wood products with putties is that the material can swell when exposed to high humidity. It should be noted that any composition intended for finishing such a material will give the surface or product resistance to moisture. If the wood putty is chosen correctly, then all fears are unfounded.

Selection criteria for putties

When choosing a material, you need to proceed from several criteria. This is the maximum adhesion, that is, the ability of the putty to adhere to the wood in this case. Also, the composition must be elastic - elasticity greatly simplifies the application process, and then prevents cracking. A good and properly selected composition should dry quickly and be environmentally friendly.

If wood putty is chosen for finishing, then the fractions of the composition should be very small - this will result in the thinnest and very smooth layer possible.

Types of compositions

There are several main types of compositions for puttying. The differences between these materials lie in the main component on the basis of which this or that mixture is produced. Now it is possible to distinguish gypsum compositions - based on acrylic and latex, nitro-fillers, as well as adhesive and oil mixtures.

Gypsum putty for wood

These mixtures are especially popular in wood processing. The composition has excellent characteristics, elasticity, excellent level of adhesion, as well as good vapor permeability. But at the same time, gypsum is in no way suitable for use in rooms with high humidity and for outdoor work.

Acrylic putties

Acrylic putty on wood has a cost that is much higher than the price of gypsum materials. This slightly limits the possibilities of application. But the composition has a lot of advantages.

Acrylic compositions are distinguished by good resistance to moisture, resistance to fire, and wear. The coating dries within 6 hours after application. Acrylic-based materials are universal - they can process parquet floors, laminate, plywood, chipboard and other products. Acrylic-based putties are considered the best if you need to rub the seams in the parquet.

Similar mixtures are used for both internal and external finishing works. The main disadvantage, in addition to the high price, is the need to periodically update the coverage. It is also necessary to provide additional insulation in the cracks, since one putty composition may not be enough.

Latex materials

These products, like acrylic-based mixtures, cannot be classified as accessible to everyone. Latex-based coating dries even faster than acrylic formulations. The coating will be perfectly even. Such products have high environmental safety. If you need to process a parquet board on the floor, then this is an ideal choice.

Nitro putty

Such mixtures contain organic solvents, various petroleum-based resins and plasticizer substances. Coatings made using these putties are resistant to various aggressive chemicals and the surface is easy to sand. Advantage - despite the presence of solvents in the composition, there is no smell when working with putties on wood.

Oil putty for wood

Such products are made on the basis of oil obtained after the processing of natural drying oils. It also contains varnish and chalk. Due to the presence of drying oil, the mixture perfectly withstands moisture. Therefore, products puttied with oils can be used as facade elements.

Often, windows and other exterior parts are treated with oil putties. It is a good choice for outdoor applications - the resulting coating will have high durability. Often, these products are used in conjunction with antibacterial treatments.

The only negative, moreover, quite noticeable is the long time required to dry the treated surface.

Adhesive mixtures

Such solutions are components that must be mixed immediately before application. The basis is PVA glue.

Manufacturers

On the shelves of building supermarkets there is a huge number of compositions for varnishing or painting. Among the manufacturers are domestic and European brands. Among the most famous European manufacturers, one can single out the well-known Finnish brand - Tikkurila. Wood putties for indoor and outdoor use from this brand allow you to perfectly level even the most difficult surfaces. With the help of Tikkurila mixtures, the colors of different types of natural wood are copied. The coating obtained after processing with these fillers can be used in any climatic conditions.

Also, the Lakra brand is popular with buyers. These products are perfectly combined with various parquets. VGT wood putty is well suited for painting.

Compositions brand Eurotex have a low cost, while the quality of putties is more than worthy. The products of the domestic manufacturer "Rainbow" are characterized by quick drying, as well as excellent adhesion. Wood putty "Extra" is suitable for sealing even very small and minor defects on wood products.

Preparatory stage

The preparation process involves cleaning the premises from furniture. Large and heavy objects are protected with film or newspapers. Also, when working with putties, do not forget about safety equipment - it is better to stock up on glasses, a respirator, gloves.

Surface cleaning

If putty is used for painting, then it is applied to the most even and clean surfaces. The result depends on the cleanliness and how well the surface is prepared. It is important to completely remove the remnants of old paint, putty. To do this, you can use solvents and abrasive materials. Also, nails and other metal parts are taken out of a wooden product. Then the surface should be treated with brushes and damp cloths.

Ground application

It will not be possible to do without the priming process, since without this it will not be possible to achieve good adhesion. Most modern soils also have high antiseptic capabilities. The antiseptic will reliably protect the product from the adverse effects of bacteria and microorganisms. It is better to choose a primer on the basis of the same base as the putty composition.

How to putty?

So, in order to apply putty on wood for interior work, you will need a container where sucking in the form of a powder will be filled, two spatulas - wide and narrow, an airbrush, and sandpaper.

Even before the bulk of the composition is distributed, the surface is carefully inspected so that there are no large chips and cracks on it. If these defects are present, then they are processed first. Large seams are covered with a special tape. This will make it possible to reduce the consumption of putty mixture and avoid cracking in the future. The tape is laid on a slightly dried base layer. Top with top coat.

Next, they gain mass with a narrow spatula and transfer the putty to a large tool. The composition is applied from top to bottom from the corner. The first layer should have a thickness within two to three millimeters. No matter how carefully putty is applied to wood (pine, etc.), after the coating dries, streaks will remain on it. You can remove them with an old spatula or sandpaper. The final layer should be no more than 1.5 mm thick.

When diluting the finishing putty mixture, it is necessary to ensure that the solution is thinner than the starting solution. The mixture in liquid form is best applied with a spray gun.

After complete drying of the finishing putty, the layer is also treated with sandpaper. For oil formulations, conventional dry processing is suitable. If the nitro putty is cleaned, then the abrasive must be moistened in water or a solvent.

We will send the material to you by e-mail

No matter how noble the wood looks in the finish, its strength is not as high as we would like it to be. Sooner or later, cracks, holes, and other defects become noticeable on the wood. What to do with it, the HomeMyHome editors will tell you about an excellent tool - putty on wood. This is what we are going to talk about today in our review.

A good sure means of hiding surface defects

The main function of this material is to hide defects. But, since the violations of the base are different, as are the types of wood, and the operating conditions of a particular product are also not similar to each other, there are various types of putty mixtures. Let's get acquainted with their types in more detail.

Gypsum-based plasters

As you know, gypsum is not friendly with moisture, therefore, in terms of strength and elasticity, the gypsum composition is inferior to other mixtures.

The advantages of gypsum compositions are their vapor permeability, which will maintain the microclimate in the room, and the cost of the material is low compared to others.

If the question is how to putty a wooden surface in a dry room, then you can safely buy a gypsum composition.

Acrylic wood putty

Acrylic putties are not afraid of moisture and temperature fluctuations, they are not afraid of mechanical loads. For the floor, this is ideal, but mixtures can also be used outside the building.

Acrylic is highly elastic, it is a good wood putty for sealing deep defects, small cracks, wood pores. There is no shrinkage: as the mixture was applied, it remained so after drying.

Epoxy putty for wood

Wooden surfaces are repaired with epoxy: doors, window frames, columns, beams are restored with this mixture. Epoxy putty does not react to moisture and is a high-strength inclusion after it hardens.

As part of this material, there are two elements that need to be mixed before work: they allow the mass to grab quickly. The surface with epoxy is easy to sand and paint, it is not frightened by water and chemical solvent.

But the stain should not be applied, the appearance of the treated area will be spoiled.

Oil based adhesives

It is clear that the composition contains oils and solvents. Products process the surface of the facades of buildings before painting them.

This composition is suitable for outdoor use due to its characteristics: water resistance and resistance to adverse environmental influences.

Such a surface will not crack, will not crumble. Thanks to the manufacturers, you can find a mixture of the right color, even with the ability to imitate a wooden texture.

Other varieties

Wood putty is safe for health if it does not contain solvents. We are talking about a water composition that can boast of plasticity and elasticity, as well as the absence of a pungent odor. Excess material is wiped off with a damp cloth.

It is a highly adhesive compound, so it works well on a variety of surfaces.

In addition, it can be added that when finishing they use nitro putty, adhesive, latex.

Leading manufacturers: tested by time and users

On the modern market, a wide range of good domestic and imported mixtures produced by eminent and reliable brands are presented.

Wood putties from Tikkurila are in demand. This is a Finnish company that offers its products at high prices, which are fully justified by the quality.

The company "Lakra" is famous for its good quality products. Their products are inexpensive, but the quality does not suffer from this.

Wood putty from the domestic manufacturer "Tex" is cheaper than many compounds from competitors, but the quality of the products supplied is quite up to par.

Worthy of good mention are the manufacturers "VGT" and "Eurotex".

How to choose wood putty: do not waste money

How to putty a tree, that is the question. We select suitable compositions for indoor and outdoor work.

Wood putty for outdoor use and its effect

For outdoor work, they prefer to use a thermomoisture-resistant putty on wood. The walls of the building are exposed to alternating temperatures, precipitation, ultraviolet radiation. Therefore, in this case, compositions are considered not only with easy application, but also with elasticity.

Two-component epoxy putties based on petroleum resin, pigment additives and plasticizers. These are mixtures that qualitatively fill defects, resistant to deformation and destruction.

The oil mixture will contain oils, chalk, water and plasticizers. For outdoor coverage, this is a fairly resistant material, durable and reliable. Those who are wondering how long wood putty dries should read the instructions directly on the container. The oil composition dries out for more than a day.

Wood putty for interior work

Putty inside houses and apartments not only walls. This is a material for the floor, ceiling, doors, which allows you to perform the basic finishing of the element. Any putty must meet a number of requirements: plasticity, suitable consistency, strength, good adhesion to wood, gradual hardening and the elimination of cracks.

Epoxy seals deep defects, leveling surfaces. No special tools are required for the job, and grinding is easy and effortless. If you are faced with a dilemma, which wood putty to choose for the floor, then you should, first of all, think about epoxy.

Polymer compositions are universal, they mask seams, close up deep cracks, perform finishing work for subsequent coatings with paints and varnishes. This is the same composition that is good for correcting defects on the frames, ceiling, door frame and the door itself. To work with the floor, this composition is not used.

Waterproof mixtures are designed for use in the bathroom and in the kitchen.

How putty materials are used

Consider the main areas of application of this material. This is the elimination of defects on a wooden floor, the sealing of various kinds of cracks, the imitation of wood texture on the surface.

Putty for wood floor

Putty for wooden floors should contain components that will not allow the material to quickly wear out from mechanical stress.

Water-based formulations, pasty and gel-like, are suitable for the floor. If the product contains fiber, then the durability of the finished coating is guaranteed.

The nitro-based putty will also be resistant. In the composition, you need to look for cellulose ether components, acetone,. Products with wood flour have a high level of adhesion to any type of wood. Nitro-fillers, for all their positive qualities, have a rather pungent smell.

Putty for wood: what to use to seal cracks

A small gap in a wooden floor is sealed either with putty of a suitable color, or with a composition of any shade, followed by priming and painting the floor.

Cracks of 3-4 mm in size are closed with acrylic means, larger defects should not be touched, the finished material will crumble and fall out.

A solvent-based product is well suited for repairing cracks up to 1 cm, you can even repair defects on underfloor heating.

Oil compositions to eliminate narrow cracks should be mixed with chalk, and for wide flaws - with wood dust.

Imitation of putty wood as a way to decorate the surface

A number of tools are required to make a simulated tree. You need to get a palette knife, a textured roller, a roller with the image of a wood cut, several types of rubber spatula, and a stencil.

Acrylic, gypsum and silicone bases are suitable for interior decoration.

Do-it-yourself recipes for wood putty

If desired, you can make a putty mixture with your own hands, which will not be inferior in quality to purchased ones. It's all about good quality ingredients.

The most popular component is crushed chalk, which must be mixed with PVA glue to a state of sour cream. It is permissible to add small sawdust.

The second way is to dilute the chalk with water-soluble acrylic varnish. The paste should be moderately liquid.

Important! Home-made mixtures are not prepared in large volumes, and bumps and smudges are removed immediately.

What other materials are used for woodworking

In addition to puttying agents, other compounds are also used to work with wood. Their list includes primer and plaster. Each tool has its own functions and characteristics.

Wood primer

Primer is a must-have material in many areas of surface treatment. It is designed to hold substances on different layers of the surface, which creates a waterproof varnish film. This is the protection of the tree from the negative effects of external factors.

Important! The primer seriously saves the consumption of materials, and, therefore, finances.

But all this will only work if the primer is of high quality and suitable for woodworking. Soluble primer protects the material from destruction, and waterproof from moisture.

Wood plaster

The plaster protects the wood from decay, but the condition is that the surface is pre-coated with antiseptic compounds, which must dry completely.

The plastered wall resists the appearance of mold if the initial moisture threshold does not exceed 12%. The plaster protects the surface from termites and rodents.

I want to start by saying that people are divided into two categories: some people think of dirt, dust and inconvenience with the word putty, others consider it a great way to give even the most curved surfaces perfect evenness. For a long time, having worked with it with my own hands, I realized that there is probably no material more universal than this. The ability to use it for outdoor work, level the surface for painting and other decorative finishes - all this, of course, is a huge advantage of putty. Everyone is used to associating putty with concrete planes, but today I will tell you what wood putty is, how to choose putties for wood, and also talk about doing the work yourself.

Get to know wood putty

Thanks to various compositions and components, wood fillers can be used for both interior and exterior work. Modern technologies make it possible to produce two main putties for wood, which in turn have a large number of types for various purposes.

Wood putty is used to eliminate small defects, such as cracks and crevices, holes from screws and nails, as well as minor voids. Material manufacturers produce putties for wood in various shades - this allows you to work with many types of wood and merge accurately with the surface to be treated. Do-it-yourself work allows you to save money on correcting wood defects that may appear after some time of use and in case of mechanical damage.

In my case, epoxy putty was used, but I want to talk a little about other types of mixture:

  • Solvent-based mixture - this mixture is the pioneer of all other types, it is used for work in the woodworking industry. In everyday life, its use is not desirable, since putty is toxic. However, it also has obvious advantages: a large range of colors and the possibility of using it for underfloor heating.

  • Water-based wood putties are completely non-toxic, convenient for applying to the surface with your own hands due to their elasticity. They have no smell, and the excess of the applied mixture is very easy to remove - just say goodbye to the surface with a damp cloth. The material is durable, resistant to moisture and even protects the wood from fires. Such a putty on wood will qualitatively hide defects in walls and floors.

Important! Water putty is stored somewhat longer than solvent-based mixtures. Even if the packaging is damaged, it will dry much longer, and its application is possible even on polished surfaces.

Epoxy mixtures

  • Oil-based - used for outdoor work and is great for facades for subsequent painting. It has excellent water-repellent properties, besides putty is not afraid of adverse climatic conditions. The advantage over other mortars is that they would have cracked and flaked long ago under such conditions. Despite the fact that it is great for painting work, it is possible to choose the shade you like and not carry out further staining. If you do the finishing with your own hands, then this will help save extra money. You can buy putty with different packaging from 0.5 kg to 15 kg in one container - you must agree that it is very convenient if you are finishing a large area

  • Acrylic wood putty is one of the most popular and beloved mixtures. She has excellent performance and is used for various do-it-yourself repairs. Due to various additives and plasticizers, it can be used for kitchens and bathrooms, despite the high humidity in these areas. Tolerance of heavy loads is another significant advantage of the solution. It is thanks to this property that it is actively used as a putty for a wooden floor. For clarity, I decided to compile a small table of characteristics of the acrylic mixture:
Acrylic or polymer putty
Elasticity High elasticity allows you to fill the smallest voids and cracks. Clogs board joints in parquet
Shrinkage It does not exist, so it is enough to apply the material once, and it will retain its shape.
Durability Depends on operating conditions, 3-10 years or more
Price High cost compared to other types, however, a long service life can recoup the cost.
Color There is a wide range of color palette
Environmental friendliness The material is non-toxic, its use is possible in sanitary areas

Epoxy mixtures

This type of putty is suitable where the use of others is impossible or pointless. Epoxy mixture is able to quickly and permanently repair damage to wooden structures. It is easy to work with it and putty the necessary surface with your own hands will not be difficult even for an amateur, and not for a professional.

I really enjoyed working with this putty, and so I made a table listing its benefits:

Resistance to aggressive influence The treated plane perfectly resists various chemicals, which is very important for some types of structures. Even if it is constantly exposed to aggressive substances, it is able to maintain strength for a long time.
Fast curing times The solution completely hardens in 10-24 hours, after which any decorative treatment can be performed. This is a huge advantage when there is a minimum of time, and the desire to do everything with your own hands and at the highest level.
Excellent base for coloring If wood staining occurs in the future, then the epoxy mixture becomes an excellent base. An interesting feature is that the application of a primer layer is not necessary, because the paint can be applied immediately to the dried area.
Processing capability Undoubted advantage in the possibility of sawing and even driving nails without violating the integrity and strength of the structure
No shrinkage Since there is no shrinkage, leveling is possible even with a single layer of epoxy wood putty. Other compounds do not have this property
No smell There is no need to use protective equipment, but ventilation of the room is still desirable
Resistance to mechanical stress It can be used for floor structures made of wood, since after the epoxy is completely cured, the floor becomes resistant to abrasion
