How to make a storage system for a dressing room

Modules included in the storage system

The three modular buildings have the same depth, differing from each other in width and height. Each of them can be fitted with shelves, drawers or doors, allowing you to create any configuration. Note. For simplicity, we indicate nominal, rather than actual, dimensions of shelves, doors and drawers.

Finishing options for a homemade storage system

The choice of materials and finishes for drawers and doors is up to you. The three drawers in the case (photo below) show the three possible finishes. Top: maple frame with decorative plywood panel coated with semi-matte polyurethane. Medium: poplar frame with decorative plywood panel coated with white semi-matte enamel. Bottom: decorative plywood panel in an oak frame, tinted with stain and coated with semi-matte polyurethane. Note. A la cabinets with open shelves, make the back walls from 6mm decorative plywood and apply the same finish as the doors and drawers.

Plan your system layout

Make several copies of thumbnail images of system modules and one copy of the scale grid. Having measured the width and height of your pantry or wall niche, draw it on a grid (each cell represents a 50x50mm square on a reduced scale). Then measure the doorway and mark it on the grid with dotted lines, ensuring its correct location relative to the walls. Cut out images of individual modules from paper copies and place them on the grid, trying to find the best option that suits your conditions. Make sure all doors and drawers are freely accessible.

The “Lists of Materials” and “Cutting Schemes” will help determine the required number of parts for the manufacture of cases, doors and drawers. Follow the directions at the beginning of each list to fill in the appropriate cells in the table. Please note that some cabinets, drawers, panels and doors have the same parts.

LET'S GET TO WORK

Case manufacturing

1. Using the “Cutting Chart” as a guide, make side walls A, B from panels with ready-made holes for shelf holders, and upper/lower parts C, D and shelves E, F from panels without holes. To learn how to cut long panels accurately, read the Expert Tip. Having sawed off the walls, make sure that they form a pair of left and right parts, and the upper and lower holes for the shelf supports are located at a distance of 16 mm from the ends so that the shelves are positioned correctly. 11Mark the upper ends of the walls with the inscriptions “right” and “left” to avoid errors during assembly. Saw the shelves to the final width, maintaining the glued edge.

2. Carefully measure the thickness of the plywood for the rear walls G, H, I and cut out tongues 10 mm deep with a 6 mm offset from the rear edge of the side walls, top and bottom panels (Fig. 1). How to quickly and accurately mark the centers of holes for confirmation screws on the side walls is described in the “Foreman’s Advice” on p. 37.

H. Cut out the back walls G, H, I from 6mm decorative plywood. Apply the same finish as chosen for the doors and drawer panels.

4.11Before you begin assembling the bodies, set aside and mark the parts for each of them, checking them against the “Cutting Scheme” and the list compiled earlier. Empty cells should be marked with flights for each hull size. Take the parts to assemble one body. After applying glue to the tongues of the walls, top and bottom panels, assemble the body (photo A). The rear J trims will be cut to size when installing the finished modules.

List of materials and parts for storage system

Add bases and lids

1. Measure the height of the baseboard in your pantry. If it is greater than the specified height of the bases (83 mm), increase the width of the plinth boards so that the bottom edge of the cases is higher than the baseboard. Double-check the plan on the grid to ensure that all upper cabinet doors will be accessible and will not interfere with the edges of the wall opening. Cut out the side K and front/rear L plinth boards. Assemble the base, securing the parts with clamps and mounting squares. Drill holes for screws in the locations shown in Fig. 1, and screw in the screws. Note. Using two or several buildings standing next to each other, make a single base. To determine the length of the front and rear plinth boards L, the total width of the cabinets must be reduced by 38 mm.

2. Measure the width of the base along the front side and cut out the base plate M from the same material from which the frames of the doors and false panels of the drawers will be made. Finish sand the part.

3. Glue the panel blank for cover N from the same boards that were selected for the doors and false panels. After the glue has dried, file it to final dimensions and sand it smooth. Note. If the top of the housing is located above eye level, it is not necessary to install cover N. To determine its length, measure the overall width of the enclosure (or several enclosures) and add 19 mm for each end that extends beyond the side wall. Where a small body adjoins a tall one, there is no need to add length to the protrusion.

4. Apply the same finish to the base plate M and lid N as on the doors and drawer panels. Attach the base plate with clamps to the base. Drill and countersink holes through the front base board and install screws (Figure 1).

Making boxes

1. From 12 mm boards (we used poplar), cut out the side walls O, P, front and rear walls Q, R, S of the indicated sizes. Then cut out the bottoms T, U from 6 mm plywood. Finally sand all the flying boxes.

2.3a two operations shown in Fig. 2, make wall connections O, P, Q, R, S in accordance with Fig. 3. Then measure the thickness of the plywood from which the bottoms T, U are cut, and make tongues 6 mm deep on the inside of the walls with a distance of 6 mm from the bottom edge.

3 Glue the boxes together and place them on a flat surface to dry. Check for squareness by measuring and comparing the distances between opposite corners (both diagonals of the rectangles are equal). Once the glue is dry, apply the finishing coat. (We used a semi-matte polyurethane varnish.)

Make false panels and doors

1. The parts of the frames for the rear panels and doors are made in the same way and some of them have the same dimensions, so it is advisable to make them at the same time so as not to have to deal with the settings again. Cut out the posts V, W, X and crossbars Y, Z, LA. Then cut out panels BB, SS, DD, EE from decorative plywood.

2. Measure the thickness of the plywood panels and cut out 10 mm deep tongues on the inner edge of the posts V, W, X and crossbars Y, Z, AA (Fig. 3, For and 4).

3.Install a dial-type groove disk into the sawing machine and form tenons at the ends of the crossbars Y, Z, AA (Fig. 3), which fit into the tongues of the posts V, W, X (Fig. 3 and 4).

4.Finally sand the panels BB, SS, DD, EE, and then assemble the doors and paneled false panels. Cut continuous FF false panels from the boards.

5.Drill 5mm holes for handle-brackets in the false panels and handle-buttons in the doors (Fig. 3 and 4). To correctly mark the centers of the recesses for the cups of four-hinged hinges, make the template shown in Fig. 5. Mark the centers in accordance with fig. 4 (photo B). Attach a 35mm Forstner drill bit to the drill chuck and drill 11mm holes.

6.Finally sand the doors, solid and paneled false panels. Apply finishing coat.

Installation of doors and drawers of the storage system

1. Attach the housing parts of the retractable guides to the side walls of the modules (Fig. 6). How to cope with this task quickly and accurately is described in “Advice from the Master”. Then reinstall the drawer parts of the rails (photo C).

2. Before installing false panels, place the drawers into the body. Then glue spacers GG with double-sided tape to the back side of the panels BB, SS (Fig. 3) and attach the false panels to the front walls of the drawers (photo I) and E). Pull the drawers out of the body and secure the false panels with clamps. Remove the drawers and mark their position in the cabinet by writing on the back wall. Drill from the inside and countersink holes through the front walls Q, R, S into the V posts or solid FF panels (Fig. 3) and screw in the screws. Install the handle brackets, securing them with 32 mm long screws.

3. Insert the hinge cups into the 35mm recesses of the doors and ensure that the edge of the cup flange is parallel to the edge of the door. Drill pilot holes through the flange holes and screw in screws. Attach the mounting plates to the side of the chassis (Figure 6). Place the loose ends of the hinges onto the mounting plates and secure them with screws. Align the doors with the frame (photo F) so that there are equal gaps on all sides. Install the magnetic latches (Fig. 1).

Reinstall the doors and drawers. Insert the shelf supports into the holes and place the shelves on them. Cover the visible heads of the confirmation screws with plastic plugs. If your project includes an N cover, place it in place, align it and secure it with clamps. Drill from below through the top panels C, D) and countersink holes for the screws (Fig. 1). Secure the cover with screws. Install additional rods between the new modules and the wall (the standard height of the rods for shirts, jackets and blouses is 104 and 208 cm, and for dresses - 163 cm). Now that the project is complete, you can fill in new modules with a place for every item.

Prepare your pantry for a new modular system by removing old shelves, hangers and coat rods. Fill all holes with putty, prime and paint the walls. If required, reinstall the shelf and outerwear rail at a height of 208 cm from the floor. Remove the doors from the cabinets and remove the drawers. Now follow the steps shown in the photo to install the new system.

Step 1: Position the plinth as marked on your plan. To prevent it from resting on the plinth and other obstacles, secure it at a distance of 57 mm from the wall.

Step 2. Place the lower cases on the base and secure them with clamps. Drill 5mm holes, pressing the scraps on the back side. Connect the housings with furniture screw ties.

Step 3: Push the cabinet against the wall and level it on the plinth. Drill holes through the bottom into the front base piece and install screws.

Step 4: Place the next housing on top, level it and secure with clamps. Drill 5mm holes using a backing scrap and secure the housings with screw ties.

Step 5. Before installing the last cabinet, place a strip of masking tape along its top edge on the wall and mark the position of the wall studs on it.

Step 6: To reinforce the rear wall of the upper body, cut a 76mm wide J trim from 6mm plywood and adjust its length to the distance between the side walls. Secure it in place with double-sided tape

Step 7. Attach the upper housing to the lower ones. Transfer the position markings of the wall studs to its back wall, drill holes through the wall and trim into the studs, and then screw in the screws.

Assembling storage system components

A. After gluing the back wall into the tongues, clamp the side walls of the case, top and bottom panels using clamps, using mounting squares to align the parts. Then use a special stepped drill to make holes and screw in confirmation screws.

B. With the template stops pressed against the corner of the door, use an awl to mark the center of the hinge cup recess on the inside of the post.

C. To ensure vertical alignment, move the drawer sections of the drawer slides 3mm from the front corner of the drawer and drill holes and secure them with screws.

D. To prevent the false panel panel from bending when tightening the handle screws, glue a 6 mm thick GG spacer to its back side with double-sided tape, placing it exactly at the location where the holes are drilled.

E.Before attaching the false panel to the drawer with double-sided tape, use 3mm spacers to even out the gaps. Then use the handle screw holes to drill holes through the spacer and through the drawer front.

F.Four-pivot hinges allow the door to be neatly and easily aligned with screws, sliding the door in any of three directions.

TIPS OF A MASTER CARRIER

Cutting melamine coated particle boards

Use these techniques to cut body parts from 19x403x2440mm panels.

For ease of work, place the panels on thick blocks, the ends of which rest on sawhorses, and saw off the parts to the specified length with a circular saw. To keep edges from chipping, install a 60-tooth carbide blade and attach a splinter guard to the bottom of your saw. To do this, cut out a rectangular piece from hard hardboard in accordance with the dimensions of the sole. Move the sole down so that the disc does not protrude from below, and glue the hardboard to it with double-sided tape, carefully aligning the edges. Place the saw on the workpiece so that the blade is not above the material, but protrudes beyond the edge of the workpiece. Turning on the saw, smoothly lower the blade and make a cut in the hardboard (left photo).

For crosscuts at right angles, buy a pair of fences for a large carpenter's square. Fasten them to the short arm of the square (middle photo). Set the cutting depth to approximately 22 mm, position the square so that the saw blade is in line with the cut. Fix the square on the panel with a clamp and saw off the part for the body (right photo).

How to speed up your work with neat markup

The parts of each case are held together with a dozen screws, and it takes a lot of time to mark them on the walls of even a small case. Since the plastic plugs remain visible, I would like to place them at equal intervals. To quickly mark, make a simple template device, shown in the figure, and mark the centers of the holes on the walls with an awl (photo).

Modular shelving

Quick access to small things can be organized as follows. Socks, T-shirts, ties, underwear, tights should be folded into a tube and placed sideways in an open opaque box or drawer. An organizer suitable for these purposes can be made with your own hands from a box and fabric (do not forget to insert partitions inside).

Shoe storage

For the convenience and safety of shoes, they should be stored:

  • in plastic transparent containers,
  • on open shelves, bedside tables
  • or in a cabinet with drawers, stands, rotating shelves,
  • in modular storage systems
  • and even in pockets sewn with your own hands.

Seasonal shoes can be removed from the hallway onto the mezzanine or into the dressing room.

Storing other things

For cosmetics, art materials, tools, documents, hair care products and other small things in the house, the following interesting solutions are suitable.

  • A pallet with many pockets or a pallet bag with Velcro pockets, holders. You can store makeup brushes, manicure kits, and tools in it. Such bags are sold, but you can sew them yourself, from strong thick fabric.

  • Documents, folders, files can be stored on shelves located at an angle.

  • Cables and chargers can be stored neatly folded in toilet paper rolls. All bushings can be placed in a box or drawer of a bedside table.

  • We use the space under the shelves by using jars with magnetic lids and magnetic tape.

  • Two-level vases-shelves can be used to store cosmetics.

  • Miniature hanging shelves can be adapted for numerous varnishes.

  • Many ways have been invented to store creative materials.

Clean and spacious hallway

The organization of space in the hallway depends on its dimensions and layout.

  1. The space that is not visible (behind the door, under the stairs) should be used to the maximum: put cabinets, boxes, baskets, hang shelves, hooks for hats and umbrellas, or adapt an open hanging structure for all small things.
  2. A niche - if not, you can always create it yourself - set aside for things on hangers.
  3. By the way, you can store bags on the hanger bar (they can be hung on the bar on bathroom curtain hooks) and scarves (tie several scarves on each hanger).
  4. You can install a wardrobe or a wardrobe along a long wall, if the width of the corridor allows.

Storage systems for the living room

To store things in the living room, you can use many pieces of furniture and ready-made structures: a TV stand, bedside tables, wall shelves, shelving, shelving partitions, cabinets with space for the TV in the center, even wardrobes and built-in partitions.

Tidying up the bathroom

The bathroom is the smallest room in the house, but it should fit SO MANY small things (skin care products, shampoos, conditioners, soaps, gels, toothbrushes and pastes, towels, bathrobe, slippers, detergents, powders, conditioners) that You can’t do without life hacks. To hide some of this “ugliness” you can use decorative containers and jars. The rest can be placed on a rack, placed on multi-level or combined shelves, or placed in wire baskets.

Comfort in the bedroom

The bedroom is that place in the house where order is simply necessary for proper rest. Modern modules and special storage systems in the house will allow you to rationally place things and bedding.

You will need baskets and boxes, bedside tables; in a large bedroom you can fit both a shelving unit and a dressing table.

The ideal solution is a wardrobe or a built-in one. If your budget allows, consider the option of creating a dressing room inside the bedroom - a modern and most rational solution, allowing you to put all your wardrobe items in their places.

Use the space under your bed. On the top you can put a continuous shelf for small things - candles, souvenirs, photographs.

Order in the kitchen

The kitchen should be spacious. Storage systems in the kitchen involve rational use of space, placement of household appliances, supplies, dishes and bottles. In order not to be distracted from the creative process, you need to put everything in its place. At the same time, many things should be at hand.

The ideal option for a kitchen is a custom-made set that fits the size of the room, is adapted to the layout, and therefore does not take up much space. When purchasing ready-made designs, you can get different contents; when ordering, the choice is yours.

But there are other solutions:

In addition to kitchen furniture and ready-made solutions, we can offer several life hacks.

Cleanliness and comfort in the nursery

In the children's room, you need to provide storage of things, toys and organize the child's workplace (stationery, creative supplies).

For rational storage of all children's things you will need:

  • plastic (translucent) containers, boxes, boxes on wheels,
  • large boxes or baskets for toys,
  • spacious closet with shelves and hanger bar,
  • open shelving for books and souvenirs (for a small room - built-in),
  • stationery stand, desk and chair,
  • hanging shelves, hooks on the wall.

In addition to their direct purpose (quick access to things and saving space), storage systems will help protect things from dust and mechanical influences and keep them intact.

Get your home organized and you will feel the difference between cluttered storage and real coziness. The devices, designs, pieces of furniture and life hacks mentioned in the article will definitely help you with this.

Daily household comfort largely depends on how well the storage of things is organized in the apartment. When every item has its own place, it's easy to find it and then put it back in its place without creating clutter. The Village asked designer Galina Tishutina how to think through home storage to free up more space for living.

The main thing you need to know about storage, - the output should be spacious and comfortable. After all, the best space for living is one that has a lot of air and empty surfaces. But in small apartments this is a difficult task, which also conflicts with our traditional ability to complicate everything, as well as our passion for shopping and hoarding. However, the world has become technologically advanced: a wide window sill can become a home office, Wi-Fi allows you to work even in bed, there are fewer wires, stationary units are almost a thing of the past, gadgets are rapidly decreasing in size, and all volumes of the encyclopedia fit on a flash drive. All this helps to gain additional living space.

Sorting

Before you start optimizing everything, you should divide things into necessary and unnecessary. First, you should get rid of things that have not been used for a long time. Each of us has some kind of toaster, which was last turned on a couple of years ago, while it was tightly located on the windowsill in the kitchen. It’s better to throw away such things, sell them through Avito, or give them to someone who will use them. This way, only the necessary items will remain - we will plan storage space for them.

The necessary things will also have to be sorted. There is, for example, a hot and cold rotation system. The hot rotation includes those things that should be at hand every day. These are clothes, shoes and household gadgets - from a vacuum cleaner to an ironing board. To correctly calculate the dimensions of your wardrobe, measure the linear meters of the bar for long items (outerwear, dresses), and separately calculate the meters of the bar for short items (shirts, blouses, jackets). Also determine the volume of shelves for other clothes and boxes of shoes.

Cold rotation items include suitcases, boxes, Christmas tree decorations and other seasonal items. You can put your home library in the same category if you don’t access it every day, and household items that are dear to your heart - everything that can be put away.

Hidden storage

A well-organized apartment can be compared to a car, the interior of which has a lot of air and space, while the space under the hood is packed to capacity. We also need to get as much space as possible in living rooms, kitchens and bathrooms, and use office spaces - that is, the hallway, corridor and closets - to the maximum.

Instead of installing several wardrobes in living rooms, it is better to fence off a small wardrobe somewhere in the hallway. A wardrobe, even a small one, is the best thing that can happen to a small apartment. It effectively uses space right up to the ceiling, like the hood of a car, where every millimeter is used. A wardrobe is a bulky piece of furniture that stands in a room and takes up a lot of space.

Open storage

It is best to minimize the number of things laid out on surfaces. Firstly, they create a feeling of disorder, and secondly, they complicate the cleaning process because they need to be dusted off. Open storage is only permissible in the kitchen and bathroom, that is, where there are items that are simply inconvenient to put away in cabinets several times a day.

Kitchen storage

To see if your kitchen storage is well organized, do a Sunday shopping test. Let's imagine that you are bringing home a supply of groceries and household chemicals for the next week or even several. If you can't organize everything into cabinets so that you can still access every package, then it's time to change something.

Small kitchens usually want to be kept as spacious as possible, so as not to further reduce the space with an abundance of items. In this case, a good solution would be a cabinet located on the path from the front door to the kitchen, in which you can store products that do not require refrigeration - water, groceries, sauces. This will allow you to shop less often and not turn your kitchen into a warehouse.

For storage inside kitchen cabinets, you should get identical containers and pour everything you can into them - from tea to cereals. The fact is that factory packaging of different shapes and sizes is difficult to ergonomically place inside the cabinet. As a result, a lot of space is wasted, and food from unsealed boxes often spills. Label each container and use the same ones for each type of food. This storage system increases the level of order and greatly speeds up the food preparation process.

Bathroom storage

The approach to organizing storage in the bathroom is very similar to the kitchen. It is necessary to allocate hot rotation items and think about storage for cold items. Leave only those tubes and items that you use regularly on open surfaces. The rest can be put in the closet. It is worth considering hanging a wide shelf directly above the door. It is invisible, and it is also convenient to store a supply of washing powder and toilet paper.

Storage in rooms

Beds with a lifting mechanism and a storage system inside are often much inferior in terms of convenience to ordinary beds with legs, under which drawers on wheels from IKEA are placed. And besides, such beds are much cheaper.

If we talk about the nursery, it seems to me that the child should maintain order in his toys on his own. Therefore, all boxes should be placed at an accessible height. In this case, the little person will have the freedom to choose for himself what to put and where.

Good Habits

A convenient storage system is not only cabinets and shelves, but also a certain set of good habits. Train yourself to audit things a couple of times a year in order to get rid of junk in a timely manner and free up space. Keep track of the overall balance: if after a vacation or successful shopping you brought a couple of bags of things into the apartment, then the other pair of bags should leave it in the foreseeable future.
