Design curtains for the kitchen with a balcony door. What to choose curtains for the kitchen with a balcony door

A kitchen with a window and a door overlooking the balcony is a convenient and popular layout choice. How to arrange a balcony opening? Previously, it was believed that without pleated curtains - nowhere, a "stripped" window looks bare. This opinion was replaced by another trend in the design of balcony doors and windows - lightness, conciseness and functionality, which allows for the absence of curtains at all. Let's consider options for the "golden mean" - the ideas of modern curtain design for a kitchen with a balcony.

The current ideas about the design of kitchen curtains are no longer limited to modest half-window curtains and snow-white lace tulle with ties. The videos below show selections of design projects and real photos with ideas for decorating a window opening and a balcony door in the kitchen.

Some models are so simple in execution that even at home you can sew several options and change them depending on the season and mood. Video tutorials for sewing popular models:

Features of choosing curtains for a balcony door

First of all, decide: why do you need curtains for the kitchen with access to the balcony. To hide from too bright sun or from prying eyes? To compensate for the shortcomings of the layout or for beauty? Calculate the installation options that are acceptable in your kitchen. What difficulties can be encountered? A couple of examples.

  1. A stretch ceiling without a built-in lath at the window does not allow the installation of ceiling cornices.
  2. The cornice, hidden in the drywall construction, is not planned yet at the initial stage of the repair.
  3. The already narrow window opening is obscured by the frequent frame of the balcony glazing.
  4. The walls do not allow you to install fasteners that can withstand the weight of heavy curtains.

In the case under consideration, when the window is adjacent to the balcony door, the design of the opening itself cannot be called beautiful. Its L-shaped configuration and the almost obligatory heating radiator under the window sill attract attention already from the entrance. Attempts to mask this area with decor bring the opposite effect. Therefore, if the step of the window sill block “an eyesore” and you want to hide it, the best way out, except for the not always possible demolition of the partition, is a discreet design in the general colors and style of the kitchen. For example, as in the following photos.

Repeating the colors of walls and furniture in textiles:

Requirements for curtains on a balcony block

A mandatory requirement is free access to the balcony door. On the balcony in the kitchen, there is usually a utility block with storage places, a seating area with chairs and a table, or part of a dining group in the warm season. All of these options assume that the balcony will often go out, so the curtains should not be a hindrance on the way.

Laconic and almost imperceptible Roman folds

Compliance not only with the style, but also with the functionality of the room. Lush double curtains with transparent tulle in the entire width of the window opening and thick curtains with tie-backs at the edges look the most traditional in a classic-style kitchen. However, in their numerous folds you will get confused every time you go out onto the balcony, and in the end the curtains will be constantly shifted to a position convenient for you, which, of course, will not add beauty to the interior.

Light curtains with pickups framing the balcony block

If there is only one window with a balcony in the kitchen, then it is desirable that the curtains look the same, without breaking the opening into the door area and the window sill area. Otherwise, the clearance visually decreases, and the interior loses harmony. What techniques combine curtains for a balcony door and for a window?

  • The same material and / or color solution.
  • Echoing finishes: piping, fringe, flounces, tiebacks, eyelets.
  • General cornice and lambrequin.

What to look out for

Even in the cleanest kitchen with a powerful hood, special kitchen dust is collected - heavy, greasy, sticky. Therefore, it is undesirable that the curtains absorb dirt and complicate cleaning. Soft draped curtain fabrics should be easy to wash, and hard, impregnated materials of tension structures (roller blinds, woven blinds, pleated blinds) should be dry cleaned.

Important: curtains made of natural brushed materials that allow only dry cleaning are not the best choice for the kitchen.

Since kitchen curtains will need to be removed and washed more often than room curtains, choose simple fasteners that you can handle alone. It’s good to have one more set of “clothes” for the kitchen window in stock for a while, while the previous one is washed and dried. And refreshing the interior by changing the curtains is as easy as shelling pears.

Various curtain mounts:

Which side of the world does the window face? Curtains in rooms facing south or west burn out faster than those facing north or east. This matters if the balcony is not protected from the sun or not glazed at all. The problem is solved by choosing the right fabrics impregnated with UV radiation or installing external awnings, blinds, roller blinds.

Options for curtains for the kitchen with a loggia

The loggia, even being structurally separated from the kitchen by a partition, often functionally continues the room: a dining group, a bar or a relaxation area are brought here. In this case, it is logical to visually lighten the balcony opening by hanging light-colored curtains in the kitchen without a lot of folds and bulky decor.

In the photo - a balcony block framed by light and light curtains:

If your kitchen with a loggia is located on the first floor, and you want to close it from prying eyes, you should not choose heavy and dense curtain fabrics. In the daytime, they limit the luminous flux too much and even a spacious room will look darkened. Privacy in the evening lighting with the same success will create curtains made of translucent materials with a woven pattern or multi-layered.

A convenient and therefore popular option is to curtain the balcony opening with transparent tulle or organza, and install simple fabric blinds or blinds on the loggia. Thus, during the daytime, the maximum natural lighting of the kitchen is provided, and in the evening it is enough to lower the functional curtains to protect the living space from prying eyes. At the same time, even in the evening, the kitchen is not visually cut off from the loggia.

materials

Both the usual curtain fabrics and non-standard ones - jute and bamboo linen, rice paper, mesh - are treated with dust-, dirt-repellent and sun-protection compounds in order to require less maintenance and not lose their decorative effect. It is desirable that even natural fabrics intended for kitchen curtains, contained an admixture of synthetics: the canvases will absorb dirt less and wrinkle, and their care will be easier.

Photo of bamboo and jute curtains:

A special type of material is blackout. The dense curtain fabric is additionally covered with a special acrylic compound that reflects the sun's rays. Thanks to this, the room is darkened as much as possible and does not heat up even under direct sunlight. Most often, blackout is used for roller blinds and as a lining for traditional curtains. A fabric that transmits only 20-30% of solar radiation due to processing is called a dimout.

For traditional single-layer curtains for a kitchen with a balcony, cotton or synthetic voile, lightweight linen, loose tulle and organza are ideal. With a two-layer design of a balcony block, the curtains look lighter if the layers differ in color or weave, and not in density - as in the above photo.

Cotton, linen, jute, bamboo curtains fit perfectly into interiors, the style of which involves an emphasis on textures and the use of natural materials: almost all varieties of country, eco-style, modern. Smooth, fluid, draped fabrics will be appropriate in both classic and modern Scandinavian, Mediterranean, minimalist kitchens.

Design

On eyelets, hidden and decorative hooks, woven loops, with a motorized lift mechanism, rolled up into a tube and gathered into folds - there are many ways to attach curtains. Consider traditional and modern design options for curtains for a kitchen with a balcony door.

Curtains falling from the eaves, straight or with tiebacks, are a classic of window decor. In the kitchen, they will be appropriate both in full-length and in a shortened version. Short curtains add lightness to the interior, do not interfere with the working or dining area on the windowsill, and look great in various country-style options.

They do not like to use practical and functional blinds in the home interior because of their strong association with the office, instead they prefer compact roller blinds (roller blinds) and assembled Roman blinds. They are similar in that they are mounted at the top of the window opening and are adjustable in height, closing the window from top to bottom, but differ in design.

Photo examples of horizontal and vertical blinds in the kitchen interior:

In roller blinds, the canvas is wound in a roll on a narrow shaft and treated with special compounds for rigidity, and the free end is weighted. The spring-and-chain mechanism allows you to unwind and assemble the curtain back, fixing it at the desired height.

The lifting structure of fabric Roman blinds is the same as that of blinds, but with a sparser arrangement of links. Since it is most often attached to a frame or an opening with a small overlap, it is important to accurately calculate the width of the canvas - otherwise there will be creases and distortions. Austrian curtains are a variant of the Romanesque type - they do not have rigid shaping rods, therefore, when raised, the draperies hang in semicircular scallops.

Austrian curtain with ties - on the window, curtain with pickup - on the balcony door

Roman and roller blinds look extremely concise and do not take extra centimeters from the area of \u200b\u200bthe room, so they fit perfectly into the style of the 60s, hi-tech, minimalism and are suitable for tiny kitchens. You can evaluate the design options in the photos below.

"Romans" in the interior:

Japanese panel curtains are expressive simplicity and savings: literally every centimeter of the canvas performs its function, obscuring the window opening. The fabric is not folded, on the contrary, it is stretched with the help of guides and fixed on a special cornice. Finished panels close the window opening completely or slide apart like closet doors.

Japanese fabric panels in the kitchen interior:

Flat curtains of any type allow the following mounting options:

  1. on the window sash directly or on the glazing bead;
  2. in the opening for the entire width of the window;
  3. to the ceiling;
  4. outside the window opening on the wall above it.

Even with the same design and method of fastening, kitchen curtains can look completely original in interiors of different styles. Proof of this is our selection of photos with various design options: from traditional short checkered kitchen curtains and laconic plain tulle folds to pompous patterned curtains with lambrequins. And the combination of curtains of different designs allows you to make the exit to the balcony convenient.

New in 2017 are day-night roller blinds that allow you to change the intensity of light entering the kitchen. The canvas in them is double and consists of alternating translucent and opaque strips. The control mechanism makes it possible to both raise / lower the entire roller blind and move the curtains relative to each other, while the following adjustment options are possible:

  • subdued ambient lighting;
  • complete blackout;
  • partial shading.

Rollers day-night:

We also note the revival of the popularity of filament spaghetti curtains - a long, frequent muslin fixed on the upper horizontal braid. They unobtrusively decorate the balcony opening, do not interfere with the passage to the kitchen-living room and support the zoning of space when combining the kitchen with a balcony. Such curtains are decorated with glass beads, beads, rows of intricate knots, sequins, small shells. In the above photo - transparent light green "spaghetti" on the balcony block.

A fashionable and always noticeable option for decorating a kitchen window is a stained-glass window, especially if you decorate it not only with window glass, but also with a balcony door. Real typesetting equipment is expensive, but in the kitchen it is quite possible to replace it with painting with translucent paints or even sticking a film with a finished pattern.

Important: some color window films are produced on an opaque basis, so they transmit little or no daylight - check before sticking.

Textured glass - sandblasted or chemically treated - becomes matte, but at the same time it perfectly transmits and diffuses light, making the room brighter. Full or partial glazing of a balcony block with frosted glass allows you to elegantly separate the kitchen from the balcony without darkening it.

Please note: many plants, especially orchids, love diffused light and on the windowsill behind such glass they will more often delight with flowering.

In the bedroom

A layout that provides access to a balcony through a combined window and doorway is often found in living rooms, for example, in a bedroom. The general requirements for the textile design of this block are the same as for the kitchen: the ability to freely pass through the door, the same style as the rest of the room, good light transmission. But the very purpose of the room allows wider use of designer finds. For example, French curtains, impractical in the kitchen due to numerous horizontal folds, perfectly complement the interior of a romantic Provence or classic. Long curtains, partially lying on the floor, which are almost never found in kitchens, give the mood of the bedroom relaxation and bliss.

In the living room

Both the purpose of the room and the stylistic possibilities allow in the living room with access to the balcony, as well as in the bedroom, to widely use various design options for the balcony block. For example, the canonical flounces, folds, overlaps and draperies of classic-style curtains in the kitchen look too pompous, and in the living room, especially large, just right! The only thing, do not forget to think about whether it will be convenient to open the balcony door behind multi-layered curtains. French curtains are also appropriate here, usually too lush for kitchen windows. The photo below shows ideas for designing curtains in a living room with a balcony.

Bright combined voile curtains

To give the balcony block in the kitchen a harmonious and complete look that will continue the overall stylistic concept of the room is an exciting, albeit not an easy task. In addition to the subjective “beautiful - ugly”, when choosing a curtain design, you need to take into account the properties of fabrics, how a particular balcony is used, what features of the layout need to be hidden / emphasized, and even the material of the walls and ceiling. It’s not fatal to make a mistake, but all alterations cost money, and professional designers will help you get everything right the first time.

Quick article navigation:

1.1. Roman

One of the popular solutions for the kitchen. Their mounting options allow you to install curtains separately on the window and on the balcony door, independently of each other.

Such an installation will allow you to conveniently open windows or a door for ventilation.

1.2. Rolled

If you do not take into account the design itself, then popular solutions are similar to Roman blinds.

1.3. Thread

Here, the filament curtain plays only the role of decoration - roller blinds on the balcony save from the sun.

A combination of threads and ordinary curtains.

1.4. knitted

The solution is time-consuming and requires certain skills. To meet them on sale is an exceptional phenomenon, so it remains either tailoring to order or self-production.

1.5. Fabric blinds

As are horizontal and vertical. Unlike plastic or metal models, fabric blinds won't turn your kitchen into an office.

1.6. Japanese curtains

They consist of canvases of different widths, the design is dominated by oriental themes. Depending on the number of cornices, you can adjust the level of lighting and the design of the entire structure.

1.7. curtains

Classic, cozy, simple, but not the most convenient solution for a kitchen with a balcony door. Suitable if the balcony is used infrequently.

Such fastening is advisable with frequent use of the balcony.

You should correctly calculate the length - too large will be confused under your feet.

1.8. Curtains on grommets

These are special rings that are located on the top. With the help of these rings, the curtain is put on a round cornice. Unlike hooks, this solution is more reliable, and the curtain itself moves more easily.

Combination of eyelet curtains and Roman blinds. A separate cornice makes access to the balcony easy and convenient.

2. Features

2.1. materials

The material must meet four requirements:

  1. Practicality. The fabric should be easy to wash and not absorb odors.
  2. Fire safety. Some types of fabrics are impregnated with a special compound that reduces the flammability of the material. You should learn about such impregnation directly from the seller.
  3. Strength. Curtains must withstand daily use and frequent washing.
  4. The weight should be light so that the closure does not turn into a fight with the curtain.

Based on these requirements, we can distinguish three types of fabrics that are best suited:

  1. Synthetic. Easy to wash, light weight, resistant to dirt and other influences.
  2. Combined. The composition of such fabrics is dominated by natural material (linen or cotton), but there is also a part of "synthetics". This combination retains the cozy look of natural fabrics and inherits all the practical qualities of synthetic ones.
  3. Wood. This material is suitable for Roman or roller blinds.

2.2. Fixing and cornice

Fastening can be done in two ways:

  1. With a cornice.
  2. Without him.

The cornice is needed for:

  1. Thread.
  2. Knitted.
  3. Japanese.
  4. Classic.
  5. Curtain with eyelets.

All these options are close to the classic ones, so there is simply no other installation method for them.

However, there are types of curtains that can be installed with and without a cornice:

  1. Roman.
  2. Roll.

They can be installed on Velcro, rail or other device.
Fabric blinds stand separately, since their fastening is not a classic cornice in the literal sense. Cornice for fabric blinds provides structural elements with the help of which the movement and control of the blinds is carried out.

2.3. Installation location

There are two options for mounting the eaves:

1. Above the window opening in the wall.

Cornice above the window opening

Two-level cornices

2. To the ceiling.

Eaves hidden in a special niche under the ceiling.

Roman or roller blinds can be installed in two ways:

1. Without eaves.

Using this Velcro, you can hang it on the wall and on the window.

2. With a cornice.

In these eaves is the control system.

In this case, a hidden cornice rail with Velcro is used.

2.4. Examples of works with prices

Such a set (50x200 cm and 90x160 cm) will cost about $200.

For a length of 180 cm, the cost will be about $ 130

Such a translucent Japanese curtain will cost about $ 200.

The set is 150x245 cm each, the price is about 70 dollars.

Previously, in our country it was extremely rare to find an apartment layout that included access from the kitchen to the balcony. At the same time, modern developers offer apartments with a very thoughtful and most convenient layout, often in such apartments there are several balconies, one of which is combined with a kitchen.

The presence of a balcony in the kitchen is very convenient and functional, on the balcony space you can organize a recreation area and eat outdoors in the warm season, and store food in the cold months, using the balcony as an additional refrigerator.

The balcony door, as a rule, is combined in one piece with the window block, therefore, when decorating the kitchen with curtains, this nuance must be taken into account, which imposes requirements not only on the aesthetic, but also on the practical component.

When choosing curtains for a kitchen with a balcony, it is necessary to take into account the presence of a balcony door, which will often open and close and through which people will often pass, holding some food in their hands.

In this regard, the curtain to the kitchen with a balcony should provide the possibility of unhindered opening of the door, making up a single harmonious composition of both the door and the window.

When choosing a fabric for curtains in a kitchen with a balcony, it must be taken into account that the atmosphere of the kitchen is characterized by high humidity, the presence of soot, the possible release of fat droplets, and the frequent opening of the balcony door with food for storage, sandwiches, cups of coffee, etc. contribute to the rapid contamination and salting of the edges of the curtains. In this regard, the fabric should be easy to wash in the washing machine, not be subject to shedding and rapid wear from frequent washing, and even better - if it is impregnated with a special grease-repellent composition.

The presence of a stove in the kitchen also dictates its own requirements for the fabric of the curtains, since when the wind blows from the street, a long and narrow curtain can fall on the stove and catch fire. Therefore, when a gas or electric stove is located close to the window, you should choose a curtain option that does not allow the canvas to develop freely.

When choosing a color scheme for kitchen curtains, the following features should be considered:

  1. As a rule, the color and pattern are selected to match the furniture or tile. If you choose the color and pattern of the curtains to match the wallpaper, you can visually increase the volume of the kitchen space.
  2. A small pattern on the curtains visually reduces the kitchen, so it should not be used in window decoration in already small kitchens.
  3. Horizontal stripes on the curtains contribute to the visual expansion of the room, and vertical stripes - to the visual increase in height.
  4. According to psychologists, grayish-pink shades help calm and reduce appetite, while green and orange, on the contrary, give energy and increase appetite.
  5. All-white curtains tend to have a formal feel, so pair them with different colored trims, prints, or accessories.

The material must be strong enough, since light and soft tissues are more prone to tearing with frequent pulling and possible pinching or snagging on the balcony door.

Material curtains for the kitchen with a balcony: tulle, veils, linen

To decorate a kitchen window with a balcony door, as a rule, heavy dense fabrics are not used, as well as too thin muslin materials.

The choice of fabric is mainly influenced by the chosen design of the curtains, the design solution of the kitchen, as well as the requirements for wear resistance, resistance to molting, fading in the sun, large temperature changes, not soiling, etc.

The fashion for natural materials has been holding on for a very long time.:

  • Bamboo;
  • Chintz, etc.

Recently, more and more preference is given to natural fabrics with the inclusion of artificial threads that improve the performance of the fabric.

Most often, tulle, voile, organza, linen, satin, staple, etc. are used for the manufacture of curtains.

Curtain design for a kitchen with a balcony

Currently, stores offer a good selection of ready-made curtains, including curtains for the kitchen with a balcony.

At the same time, there are no problems if you want to create your own unique design, give free rein to your imagination and extraordinary thinking.

Specialized salons offer a huge selection of different curtain fabrics and accessories, and competent designers and professional seamstresses will help you realize your plans.

The main feature of the design of curtains for a kitchen with a balcony is the combination of two parts in the same style.

To decorate a balcony door, a narrower and longer canvas is required, while the kitchen window is decorated with a wider and, as a rule, short curtain (slightly higher than the level of the window sill, which allows the latter to be used as an additional work surface).

A very popular option for curtains in the kitchen are roller blinds, which combine qualities such as practicality, low cost and attractive design.

The advantage of roller blinds in the case of a kitchen with a balcony is that they are very easy to regulate the lower level, so that the balcony door can be closed completely, and the curtain on the window can be partially lowered to a certain level.

Another, also popular and convenient option is horizontal blinds, in this case, adjusting the height of lowering is as easy as with roller blinds. In addition, the blinds are easy to clean without even removing them, it is also convenient to adjust the level of darkness with them.

Roller blinds, as well as horizontal blinds, are provided with separate canvases for the window and for the balcony door, they are mounted either on the upper window bar or on the upper window slope. At the same time, in order to give a finished look to the design of the window and doorway, it is desirable to close the upper partition, which can be very successfully done with the help of a rigid lambrequin or a Roman blind, fixed immediately under the ceiling, which can be kept assembled for a longer time, and if necessary, lowered, closing full window and door opening.

Other balcony design options

A window opening combined with a balcony door can be completely decorated with Roman blinds, while it is necessary to provide separate mechanisms for the window and for the balcony door. Roman blinds, for all their practicality and versatility, look more intricate than roller blinds and blinds, they are able to emphasize the sophistication of the style of the kitchen, at the same time, the fashion for them has not passed for quite a long time.

Another successful option for decorating a balcony door combined with a kitchen window is vertical blinds with two separate mechanisms for the balcony door and the window.

The narrow part of the blinds covering the balcony door can be kept assembled or simply tied with a tie at about the middle of the height. In both cases, vertical blinds will look nice and neat.

The classic version of transparent curtains, divided at the level of the junction of the window with the balcony door, remains relevant in the case under consideration. The narrow door part of the curtain can also be assembled with a pickup for convenience.

With a large area of the kitchen, as well as in the case when the kitchen is combined with the living room, it makes sense to start with such exquisite curtain designs as French (with soft horizontal draperies) or Austrian (light, pulled together from below), of course, if this is combined with the general design concept of the room.

Curtain design for the kitchen (video)

A novelty of recent years, relevant in 2018, are thread curtains, which can be easily divided into separate sections anywhere along the entire width.

Curtains to the kitchen with a balcony (photo)

The balcony door can be inconvenient if the wrong curtains hang on the window. The asymmetrical view of the window opening provides an accurate design solution. Ordinary curtains in the form of a rectangle do not look very attractive and can interfere when opening a balcony door. We have proposed photos of curtains for the kitchen with a balcony door. They will be discussed below.

Distinctive features

Curtains for a kitchen or other room where there is a balcony door are not so easy to pick up. There are a few things to consider before buying:

  • The design of curtains for the kitchen should be combined with the overall interior. So, if the kitchen is made in high-tech style, rustic-style curtains with flowers and frills will not work there. Modern models, for example, rolled canvases or blinds, fit best.
  • The cornice should be 15 cm longer at the edges than the width of the window opening. Curtains perfectly hide the imperfections of the doorway of the balcony door.
  • Canvases of different lengths are often hung on windows of this type in order to conveniently move to the balcony and constantly open the door.
  • Often curtains are hung not on the eaves, but on the window opening.
  • For the kitchen, it is recommended to select a material that is unpretentious in cleaning and cleaning. It can be all kinds of light synthetic fabrics.

All of these features make it possible to come up with various options for window design. It is important to take into account the overall style of the room, practicality and your taste.

Fabrics used to make curtains

The appearance, quality and practicality of use is directly affected by the material from which the curtains are made. Suitable materials for curtains in the kitchen with a balcony door:

Natural fabric is a classic and practical way to decorate a window with a balcony. Color and pattern should be combined with shades of furniture and walls. Curtains should be matched to the color of the furniture, not the walls. Otherwise, the curtains and walls will merge with each other.

Examples of fabrics: cotton, satin, organza and linen. It is best to hang natural materials in bedrooms or living rooms in a classic or rustic style.

Fabric with the addition of synthetic and natural fibers, such as a combination of polyester or polyester with cotton threads. Such materials are very practical in use, they do not fade, let air through, do not wrinkle.

Bamboo straw is used in the manufacture of roll products. Such models are usually mounted on the window sash and rolled up if necessary. They are not washed, do not wrinkle, keep their original shape for a long time, protect the room from excess sunlight.

Thin, braided threads. They can have different thickness and structure. Often, filament curtains are decorated with various accessories, such as beads.

The choice of material for curtains directly depends on their future purpose and design of the room. There is a huge variety of curtains that can be used for windows with access to the balcony.

Types of curtains in rooms with a balcony door

Modern curtains for kitchens, bedrooms and living rooms can differ significantly from each other. Especially extensive is the variety among the curtains in the kitchen. The original model of curtains is able to decorate and update any room.

Lightweight and classic

Similar properties are possessed by products made of light material. Such curtains are easy to wash, have high strength and extraordinary beauty.

Roman representatives

They are mounted on the window opening and rise or fall down. The canvas resembles an accordion. It is inconvenient to remove the product from the guide mechanism before washing. With careless handling, Roman blinds quickly fail.

Roll models

They are a canvas with a structure where the fabric is wrapped when it is raised. It can be wound onto a shaft or hidden in a cassette.

Japanese curtains

Rectangular canvases stretched on guide cornices are weighted from below with a load or are also fixed by a guide mechanism. Such panels are suitable for spacious kitchens with large window openings and high ceilings.

Muslin or filiform curtains

These are suspended beaded or textile threads designed to decorate windows. The product is used separately or in conjunction with fabric webs.

Modern novelties

This year it is fashionable to use blinds, rolled, filament and plain fabric products in warm colors. Designers have more preference for brown and greenish shades. Now the design of kitchens in the Scandinavian style is in fashion, as well as in the direction of minimalism and hi-tech.

It looks good and is often used a combination of fabric curtains and installed canvases on the window sashes. Lambrequins, heavy canvases are not recommended for use in a room with a balcony opening.

Regardless of the new curtains for the kitchen and other rooms that appear, I would like to mention that the choice should be influenced by the preferences of the owner or hostess in the house. If you really liked the material, you do not need to deny yourself the choice. Only, chosen according to your taste, the product is able to bring aesthetic pleasure and usefulness from being in the house.

Photo of curtains in the kitchen with a balcony door

A window with a balcony door is a common combination for kitchens, which, however, often seems non-standard and difficult to decorate with curtains. Many questions arise. Will the curtains interfere with the exit to the balcony? Is it possible to decorate a balcony block with Roman or roller blinds? Or maybe it's better to just leave it without curtains? In this article, we will talk about how to choose curtains for a kitchen with a balcony, what ways to decorate a balcony block, and also present 57 beautiful photo examples.

Option 1. Classic curtains

With classic curtains of two floor-length canvases, you can hang a balcony block of any configuration. They are good because they combine the door and windows into a single harmonious composition, visually raise the ceiling due to vertical folds, expand the room (if you hang curtains from wall to wall) and hide the flaws of the opening. On the other hand, curtains, tulle and curtains are somewhat more difficult to maintain and operate - to go out onto the balcony, you will first have to pull and move the curtain, and then, returning to the kitchen, push the canvas back into place.

And here is a selection of photos of the interiors of modern kitchens with access to the balcony and classic curtains (scroll to the right).

  • To go out onto the balcony and move the canvases along the eaves conveniently, you can equip the curtains with an electric drive with remote control or just a curtain leash (it is a stick hanging on the last slider or ring). Also, holders will help to simplify the use of curtains: clips, magnets, hooks with tiebacks.
  • If there is a working pedestal, a bar counter or just a wide window sill under the window, then it should be arranged short curtain as shown in the photo below.

If you are afraid that canvases of different lengths will look somewhat scattered, just add a lambrequin to the composition

  • It is desirable that the curtains be light and concise - without dense assembly, ruffles, lace and other embellishments that complicate the cleaning and "mobility" of the curtains.

Option 2. Curtains on the doors (or above them): blinds, Roman and roller blinds

Horizontal blinds, Roman and roller blinds are good because:

  • Easy care;
  • Do not clutter up the space;
  • Allows you to adjust the degree of illumination;
  • And most importantly - they do not interfere with going out onto the balcony, opening and closing the door;
  • Blinds, roman and roller blinds can additionally shade the room if curtains alone are not enough. They can also protect them from fading due to sunlight.

True, there are nuances - without a combination with traditional curtains, roller blinds and blinds can look too concise and even “office”.

Blinds on the balcony door in the kitchen

A minimalist interior will only benefit from such simplicity (see photo above), but in a classic kitchen, blinds and rolls will only be appropriate in combination with curtains or tulle. In this case, it is desirable that the curtains do not block the passage, otherwise the advantage of short curtains will be lost. Below are photo examples of the design of windows with balcony doors with cassette roller blinds in combination with curtains.

In our opinion, the most versatile curtains for a balcony block are Roman blinds. They can be both translucent and dense, they can harmoniously fit into both modern and traditional interiors, they will be good both on windows and on a balcony door.

By the way, only the window(s) can be hung with Roman curtains, and the door can be decorated either with a curtain, or left without decor at all, as in the interiors in the photo below.

Kitchen design with a Roman blind on the window and a balcony door without decor

  • If the window slopes are narrow and there are no transoms, then blinds, roller blinds or Roman blinds can only be hung on the sashes. So, by the way, it is much more convenient to open windows and a door.
  • Want curtains to be super practical? Choose roller blinds - they are impregnated with dirt and dust repellent compounds, easy to clean and do not fade in the sun.
  • Curtains on all doors should be made of the same material and, if possible, the same width.

Option 3. Making a balcony block with one canvas

One curtain will harmoniously look in the design of a narrow balcony block or one balcony door without a window. The method is convenient in that it allows you to freely exit to the balcony, but if necessary, shade the room by stretching the canvas over the entire width of the opening. A composition with one canvas (even if it is a thick curtain) turns out to be light and neat. However, this window design requires ideal slopes - even and with high-quality finishes.

By the way, in classic interiors, a balcony block with one curtain can also look appropriate. as in the photo examples above. However, lightweight classics also allow windows without decor.

  • If you still need to sometimes shade the windows, but you do not want to burden the interior with curtains, then we recommend installing cassette roller blinds on the sashes of the balcony block, which, when assembled, are hidden in a box and are almost invisible on the frame.
    • The cornice and curtain fasteners for windows with a balcony door should be, firstly, easy to use (so that it is convenient to remove the curtains for washing and hang them again), and secondly, reliable, because they have to withstand heavy loads. Thirdly, runners, rings and eyelets should slide easily over the bar or profile.
    • Kitchen curtains should be super practical, easy to care for, not wrinkled (for example, so that they can be fixed with a clip and then dismissed). For this reason, we recommend choosing synthetic or semi-synthetic curtain fabrics (such as polyester/cotton blends).
    • The curtains of the glazed balcony / loggia should be combined with the interior of the adjacent kitchen and, of course, with the curtains of the balcony block.
