Wooden window sills of the Moscow region installation master. Wooden window sills

Successful installation of windows means not only the successful installation of the window frame, but also the correct installation of the window sill.

Only in this case it is possible to give the external attractiveness of the entire structure, to ensure maximum comfort in the room. You will have a convenient area for placing small interior items, the issue of heat transfer regulation will be resolved.

From this article you can learn how to organize a technologically correct installation of wooden window sills.

Functional features of wooden window sills

The window sill is not just a decorative element that complements the window system. This is one of the most important building blocks that performs many utilitarian functions: If the technical norms and rules for the installation of wooden window sills are observed, they guarantee the thermal protection of the room, eliminating the risk of drafts.

  • It is used as a convenient and compact shelf where you can place flower pots, children's toys, stationery.
  • On the wide window sill you can leave a book, use it as a comfortable seat to enjoy the view from the window.
  • A wide window sill will allow you to place a computer monitor, a table lamp on it and use it as a desk.
  • Creation of a miniature winter garden on the balcony by placing flower vases at different levels.

A properly selected and installed window sill will complete the entire home interior, provide you with an additional workplace or a comfortable seating area.

Varieties of window sills and their specifics

The existing variety of window sill shapes and materials allows you to choose the best solution for any design idea. Based on the approach to installation, there are designs:

  • Wide type with a size of 40 cm or more, which allows you to successfully produce a decorated cover for heating systems, and also saves space in the room. This option can be used in the presence of wide supporting walls.
  • Narrow type (width up to 10 cm) - used for window systems installed on balconies.
  • Sloping, when the window sill is replaced by part of the window slope.
  • With a launch on the wall, when part of the slab deepens into the concrete structure by 17-20 cm.

Along with a straight window sill that can fit into any type of interior, there are also more original arched options. They give a designer freshness to the arrangement of residential premises.

The use of wood in production is a universal and quite popular solution. However, such a material is subject to moisture and temperature changes, and therefore often deforms and cracks.

To eliminate these problems, glued or milled wood is used, the moisture content of which does not exceed 10%. In this regard, pine, beech or oak wood is taken, followed by treatment with special protective compounds.

To reduce the cost of construction, you can use chipboard. This material has an external appeal and is strong enough, however, with prolonged exposure to moisture, it will collapse. Finishing with lamination will partially solve this problem, but the possibility of moisture penetration from the ends will remain.

What you need to know when installing a wooden window sill

A significant part of the overall success of the installation depends on the correct measurements. The penetration of the front part and sides into the wall is at least 40 mm, and in addition, it is also necessary to provide for an exit on one side of more than 60 mm beyond the concrete.

If you calculated everything correctly, then you need to process the structure. To do this, use a variety of moisture-protective compounds and solutions. Thanks to them, the material will not deteriorate, and the service life will be significantly extended.

It is necessary to process not only the upper and lower surfaces of the plate, but also the end parts, especially at the point of contact with the wall.

The installation site must be free of dust and dirt. It is also necessary to remove some of the loose concrete. The surface on the wall should be additionally primed. In addition, the base on which the structure will be installed must be leveled. Installation is carried out in accordance with the level indications.

To successfully complete the task, you need to follow these tips:

  • In a panel or brick house, it is necessary to use a two-level fixation. First, fix it with mounting foam, and then use self-tapping screws to make a through fixation with the window frame from the outside.

  • For wide window sills, additional support is required in the form of metal corners or wooden bars that are attached to the wall surface. The fixing of the structure on the basis is carried out with the help of foam.
  • In wooden houses, it is desirable to take into account the design features when planning the opening. Fastening is done with carpentry glue or self-tapping screws.

Production of window sills from wood

When choosing a material for a structure, it is necessary to focus on the following requirements:

  • high degree of wood drying;
  • increased rock strength;
  • homogeneity of the material without knots or darkening.

The presence of resin in the pine material makes such structures more durable, additionally endowing them with healing properties.

Oak wood is characterized by high impact resistance and protection against mechanical damage. At the same time, experts recommend using glued laminated timber, and not solid wood.

The prepared material must be carefully processed. The ends must be sanded and polished. From below it is required to provide grooves for fastening. The window sill is treated with varnish or paint, and the lower part must be treated with antifungal compounds.

For insulation, the bottom of the window sill can be covered with felt, which is fixed with nails. During installation, it is advisable to prepare the surface of the wall in advance by treating it with lime and gypsum. The boards will be installed from above, taking into account the entry into the corresponding recesses in the walls.

When installing under a beam, it is necessary at the initial stage to fix the plate with nails without caps. It is necessary to fix the nails at the bottom of the beam, and then put the structure itself on them.

During installation, it is important to ensure that there is no tilt. And after fixing, it is necessary to remove the excess solution and foam the voids that have arisen.

Window sill installation

The size and shape of the structure slab are determined individually. The width can vary from 30 cm to 50 cm, but it is important to remember that two-thirds of the window sill must be attached to a solid wall surface or special fasteners. Also, you should not indent more than 7 cm behind the wall, since heat transfer performance can be degraded.

Mounting technology:

  • When preparing the base, the lower surface of the opening is leveled, and the side walls are knocked out a few centimeters along the height of the window sill plate for its subsequent insertion into the depths.
  • Installing wedges will help level the surface of the structure horizontally in level.
  • When installing the sill plate, the wedges are adjusted to ensure accurate horizontal guidance.

  • In the place where the slab is deepened into the slopes, foaming is performed, followed by processing of the board from its lower side.
  • Providing a flat surface for installing a window sill is possible either by preliminary concreting according to the level, or by using foam.

This material will not only additionally insulate the installation site, but also prevent possible shrinkage, provide insulation and contribute to thermal control.

A properly installed window sill will provide not only an attractive interior in the room, equip the room with an additional workplace, but also solve problems with thermal control.

Among the materials used in interior decoration, wood is gaining more and more popularity. More precisely, it regains its once lost popularity. At one time, thanks to the development of the chemical industry, plastic polymers practically replaced wood from the number of finishing materials. However, the demand for wooden interior elements has arisen again. And this is understandable, since there is little that can be compared with a tree in terms of naturalness and aesthetic appeal. Increasingly, wood is used as a material for the manufacture of window sills. About how to install a wooden window sill with your own hands and what rules must be followed, and will be discussed below.

Why choose

In order to finally make sure that the installation of a wooden window sill in an apartment or a private house is a good enough idea, it is enough to get acquainted with some of the unique properties of this material.

  • A wooden window sill will have excellent performance characteristics. Here, first of all, the complete naturalness of the material is implied, and therefore such a window sill can be installed even in a children's room.
  • The material is durable and resistant to various kinds of influences. This refers to both changes in temperature and humidity, as well as chemicals used, for example, during cleaning of the premises.
  • It should also be mentioned that wood leaves plastic counterparts far behind in terms of aesthetics. In hardware stores you can find a variety of options for these decor elements. In this sense, even the most demanding taste can be satisfied. You can choose a window sill for any interior option.

Before proceeding to the description of the technological process of installing a wooden window sill, it is necessary to slightly clarify the rules in accordance with which the choice should be made.

  1. First of all, you should pay attention to the integrity of this element. You need to look at the end of the product. Cracks and chips should not be either on the surface or in the very structure of the wood.
  2. When choosing wood products, the type of wood used for manufacturing is also of considerable importance. In the case of a window sill, you should pay attention to hard rocks. Among them, the undisputed leader is oak. You can also look at beech, chestnut or pine.
  3. And, of course, it would be wrong to ignore the aesthetic side of the issue of choice. There are many shades of wood, textures too, not to mention the pattern of wood. And if we add to this just a huge number of various varnishes, stains and impregnations, then we can say that such a window sill will not only cope well with its tasks, but also act as a genuine decoration of the entire interior.

Here you can also add that if there is a desire to make the interior truly unique, then the window sill can be made independently. To do this, you only need a board that is suitable in size and appearance, which needs to be brought to the required size (which, by the way, should be about 10 cm larger than the size of the opening) and impregnated with special protective compounds. When all this is absorbed and dries, you can proceed to the installation itself.

But before that, on the inner surface of the future window sill, it is necessary to perform the so-called teardrop. This is a small groove, about 8 mm wide and 3 - 5 mm deep, designed to remove moisture that can and most likely will form on the inner surface of the window sill as a result of temperature changes.

After the window sill has been selected, you can proceed with its installation. It is best to divide the work into several stages and carry them out sequentially.

Training

First of all, surface preparation must be carried out. We are talking about the fact that whether it is a new house or we are talking about a major overhaul, after the installation of window blocks, construction debris must have remained that must be removed.

Also at this stage, it is necessary to level the surface intended for the installation of the window sill as much as possible. If even slight distortions are observed, then they must be removed with the help of wooden wedges. The only distortion that is allowed in this case is a slight slope of the window sill plane towards the room, but we are talking here about a few millimeters.

Installation

When the base is ready, you can begin the installation of the wooden window sill itself. As a rule, this process is carried out using a cement mixture. That is, it is necessary to prepare a certain amount of cement-sand mixture. Here we can say that there should be enough mortar so that it hides the upper planes of the wooden wedges used in leveling the plane by 3–5 mm. After that, the wooden window sill is laid on top and pressed down. Excess solution is simply removed with a spatula.

Sealing and fixing

After the above actions, in principle, you can do without additional measures, but in order to achieve the best effect, additional fixation of the window sill will not be superfluous. In the case when not only window sills, but also frames of window blocks are made of wood, you can proceed as follows.

On the reverse side of the window, right through the frame, a pair of self-tapping screws must be screwed into the window sill. The length of additional fasteners should be chosen so that the screws enter the window sill by at least 5 cm. Such measures will not be superfluous and will allow you not to worry about the strength of the window sill. This is especially important if this element of window trim will be used to install bowls with flowers or other decorative elements on it.

Also, one should not forget that all the gaps remaining after the work must be sealed with mounting foam or silicone sealants. In this case, it will be possible not to worry about what will blow from under the windowsill.

Installation Features

To the above, it will not be superfluous to add that in order to properly install the window sill, it is necessary to keep in mind certain features that this process has.

  • The width of the window sill is considered optimal if it protrudes from the wall at a distance of about 7-8 cm. This is quite enough in most cases. But, if it is planned to use a window sill for arranging, for example, a large number of flowers, or it is planned to equip an additional resting place on the windowsill (and this happens much more often than it might seem at first glance), then the width of the window sill may not be enough, and therefore you will have to mount a wider element . In order for its fastening to be strong enough to withstand the weight of a person, additional supports must be mounted under the window sill. As them, you can use the bars of metal reinforcement. For which holes must first be made.
  • Mounting foam can be used as the material on which the window sill is installed. It must, like a solution, be applied in sufficient quantities to the base, and then put the window sill. Thus, it is possible to reduce the total time of work and achieve maximum tightness of the window.
  • Installing a wooden window sill is possible not only if the window blocks are also made of this material, but also in combination with plastic. With the right approach to choosing a color palette, a wooden window sill is quite capable of harmonizing with a plastic window, moreover, this structural element can add some zest to the faceless plastic stamping than bring individuality to the appearance of the room.

In conclusion, we can add that it is quite possible to install a wooden window sill on your own, but in order for the result to be guaranteed successful, especially if there is not enough experience in carrying out such work, it would be better to entrust the work to specialists and, if desired, control the process.

One of the best materials for making wooden window sills is oak, as it has many beneficial properties and qualities. The most important property of oak is its density, which ensures durability in use and, as a result, the high quality of wooden window sills made of oak.

It is also worth noting that oak window sills have good hiding power when treated with stain, varnish, oil, which is great for any interiors and any premises, because you will not have problems with color. Moreover, over time, oak window sills do not change their properties.

Before the creation of oak window sills, the wood is dried for more than fifty days in a drying chamber in such a way that internal stresses, cracking and warping of the material do not occur. window sill if it is made of low-quality raw materials ... the window sill is at the junction of heat and cold, and poor-quality processing is guaranteed to lead to sad consequences. Therefore, we pay special attention to this even at the stage of preparing all materials for the manufacture of oak window sills.

The optimal material for the manufacture of window sills from valuable species of wood can be considered exactly the Far Eastern ash in terms of price, quality and appearance to the characteristics of wooden window sills from ash is the best option. That is, it looks like an oak window sill, it is not inferior in terms of characteristics, and somewhere it surpasses it, but it costs an order of magnitude more affordable, as they say, why overpay.

By choosing ash window sills, you can be sure that it will serve you for many years and will not bother you. The professionalism of our craftsmen, combined with the use of modern equipment and design, allows us to produce ash window sills that will undoubtedly please you and your loved ones. High-quality material combined with a well-designed project, high-precision manufacturing, professional painting and installation will ensure the highest quality and the best high result.

Larch wooden window sills are a unique product. As they say, all of Venice rests on our larch. The most affordable window sill, made of dense wood, for their manufacture can rightly be considered precisely
larch, in terms of price-quality ratio to characteristics, larch window sills are the most affordable in their price category. Yes, many say that it is very similar in appearance to a pine, but this is only at first glance. In terms of characteristics and density, it is in no way inferior, and somewhere superior, to many species such as birch or elm, but it is an order of magnitude more affordable. And the property of larch to resist water, fungi, mold makes it truly unique for the manufacture of window sills, since the cold of the wall and the window acts on the window sill on the one hand, and on the other hand there is heat from the heating radiator.

One can talk endlessly about the decorative role of larch window sills in the interior. But the very first question that the owner of the house decides is the choice of material. Of course, much will be determined by style, but there are a number of certain rules. Let us briefly characterize the main materials used for the manufacture of window sills. For the manufacture of window sills, various types of wood are used: soft (this is pine) and hard (Far Eastern oak, Far Eastern ash, Siberian larch, etc.).

Pine window sills are the most budgetary and common type of solid wood window sills. Pine wooden window sills are suitable for those who frame windows in a country house and do not want to overpay. The only drawback in them is the lack of density, but this drawback can become an advantage when performing design delights such as aging wood (removing softer layers with a stitching machine). But if you properly care for pine window sills, they will last for many, many years and will please the eye with their warmth and beauty of natural wood.

The window sill, as a necessary element of any window, serves a variety of purposes. It can become a convenient shelf for books or indoor flowers. Someone will gladly place toys and souvenirs on it. Someone even uses the window sill as a countertop. As you can see, this is not only a part of the window and a decorative element, but also a multifunctional set! Installing a wooden window sill with your own hands is a responsible business, and from a financial point of view it is also an economical solution.

Advantages of wooden window sills

The aesthetics and beauty of all kinds of wooden forms and the variety of fiber patterns are undeniable. A wooden window sill has many advantages:

  • Environmental friendliness.
  • Possibility to choose any form. It all depends on the imagination of the customer and the skills of the carpenter.
  • Easy color selection. Impregnations and varnishes of various shades and types are available to everyone.
  • Excellent thermal insulation.
  • Long service life. With proper initial treatment and subsequent care, wood can retain its appearance and internal stability for several decades.
  • High strength. Woods such as oak, for example, have a high density, so they are difficult to break or damage.

In many ways, the choice will be determined by the area in which you live. Coniferous species have a beautiful pattern and structure: pine, spruce, cedar or larch. But such products will need to be treated with special care. With a constant drop in temperature and humidity, the plane may be deformed, which will mean the need for replacement or major repairs. The advantage is often given to hardwoods, such as, for example, beech, oak, hornbeam. With such window sills there will be a little more hassle in manufacturing, but the result is really worth it. If possible, stop at a solid wood product, but even if the board is glued, if all technical aspects are observed, it is not inferior in any of the indicators. Therefore, consult the seller well.

Note! Modern technology has reached the point where MDF board and chipboard are also of fairly good quality, but lower in price than natural wood. If the budget is limited, you can look towards such products.

Preparing the foundation

The quality of installation will depend not only on the window sill itself, but also on how well the base will be prepared:

Preparation and installation of the window sill

As a rule, the customer receives a prepared board at his disposal, and the installers do the rest. This is specially conceived, because before or during installation it is possible to damage the surface, and it is also better to adjust it in place. Therefore, before installation, it will be necessary to perform some actions.

  • A workplace is being prepared on which it will be convenient to place the window sill.
  • Carefully inspect the board for knots and any defects. One side is usually more presentable, choose it as the front.
  • In order for the window sill to hold well, it would be better to drown it along the edges into the slopes. This is usually done to a depth of 1 cm. The top line of each recess in the wall should match the bottom line of the window. Marking is carried out using a laser or water level. A line is projected onto the lower part of the frame and onto the slope, a mark is made with a pencil, then a line is drawn along the square. Be careful, metal corners can be installed at the corners of the slopes. To begin with, they will need to be cut with a grinder, then go through the line with a disk, and then sample with a puncher or a hammer and a chisel.

  • Now all dimensions are transferred to the window sill plane. Another 2 cm is added to the size of the opening, by which the ends will be recessed. If the window is plastic, then you need to take into account that the plane will go under it by about 1.5 cm. The protrusion beyond the plane of the base is selected individually. If there is a heating radiator under the window, then it is better to close it only halfway so that warm air rises to the windows and they do not fog up. You also need to provide "ears". They can be 3 cm in size on each side. To make this transfer easier, find a piece of cardboard, fiberboard, or plywood that fits the window sill. Adjust it to the parameters, try it on, and then attach it to the workpiece and make marks.
  • In the case where the cutouts for the side protrusions will be made using a hand-held circular or miter saw, do not finish the blade. If this is not done, then you can overdo it and the drink will turn out to be more than necessary. It is better not to cut 5 mm, and then walk with a jigsaw.
  • If you want to round the edges, then it is better to do this with an electric jigsaw and a nail file with a fine tooth, so as not to lift the fibers much at the cut point. To draw a circle, select an element that fits the radius. It could be a jar lid or something. Just circle it. After that, the end face is processed with a grinder to remove unnecessary protrusions and achieve perfect rounding.
  • Sharp end caps are not always very good. A child running may get caught and injured. In order to make the product look even more attractive and exclude such a situation, you can walk along this ledge with a milling cutter. Usually the cutter is selected according to personal taste and preferences. It is better to do this slowly, especially if hardwood is being processed. With the hasty conduct of the router, sometimes ugly chips are obtained.

  • Small burrs may appear during milling. To remove them, you will need to use sandpaper with a grit of 240. Careful movements without strong pressure, so as not to damage the resulting pattern, you should walk along the entire sample. If the reverse side of the abrasive has a wax base, then the finishing grout can be done with it.
  • Try on the almost finished product. If everything fits well, then you can start painting it.
  • The first layer is a primer. After applying it, you need to let the wood dry well. Usually, some fibers swell and rise, so you will need to walk with a grinder with sandpaper installed with a grain of 240 or 320. Then everything is done at the request of the owner. A stain can be applied to give the desired tone. If it is water-based, then after the first coat, in some cases, it will be necessary to perform grinding to remove unnecessary fibers. The varnish is applied in three layers. The first - along the fibers, the second - across and the third - like the first. Each new one is applied only after the previous one has completely dried. For better adhesion, you can also walk with a grinder on the first two.
  • When the window sill is already completely dry, it can be mounted. First of all, foam is applied under the window to close all possible gaps. Further, it is laid out over the entire surface. The product is installed in its place and pressed down well with eggplants with water or something else. Near the window itself, you can not press hard so that the plane is well pressed against the frame.

Well, if you already have the skills to work with the listed power tools. This will make it possible to cope with the task no worse than a professional. , only it might take longer.

Wooden window sills are well combined with windows made of glued eurobeam or laminated profile, so many customers prefer these products. Models made using modern technologies differ from the basic analogues that can still be found in old buildings. Today, such window sills are made in different ways from several types of wood, so you can choose a decor that goes well not only with window sashes, but also with flooring and other interior items. At the same time, some buyers who want to install wooden models are worried that they will not last long enough and various problems will arise during operation. How justified their fears, find out from this article.

Advantages and disadvantages of wooden window sills

Wooden window sills are not only environmentally friendly, but also warm products. Unlike products made of or concrete, they are guaranteed not to become a cold bridge between the interior and the street. For window structures, this is a very important quality. In addition to participating in the creation of a favorable microclimate in the interior, these products have several other important advantages:
  • respectable appearance - modern methods of processing and finishing make it possible to make exclusive elements of window structures involved in shaping the interior from ordinary window sills;
  • strength - wood products have high bending strength, thanks to which they perfectly withstand high external loads;
  • maintainability - most minor damage to the surface of the window sill can be eliminated during simple restoration work;
  • plasticity - products of any shape can be made from wood;
  • durability - with proper care, window sills will last as long as the windows themselves.

The disadvantages of these products include a tendency to deformation, a low level of fire safety and the likelihood of the development of microorganisms. The last two problems have recently been successfully combated with the help of effective impregnations that increase the fire resistance class of products and make wood resistant to the development of fungus and mold.

Today, several technologies have been developed that allow the manufacture of window sills that do not deform or crack during operation.

What types of wood are window sills made from?

For the production of wooden window sills, pine, cherry, hornbeam, oak, beech and other species are used. For premium products, mahogany or ebony is used. In this case, most often window sills are made from the same breed as window sashes. Among the products of an affordable price category, window sills made of oak, hornbeam and ash should be distinguished. They are more beautiful and stronger than soft pine or larch products. Read more about the properties of the most popular used for the manufacture of window structures, read on WindowTrade.

Technologies for the manufacture of wooden window sills

Currently, several methods are actively used for the manufacture of these elements of window structures. Both the cost and characteristics of products largely depend on technology. Today, manufacturers offer customers the following types of window sills:

Regardless of the type of window sill, wide products must necessarily crash. Otherwise, condensate flowing down will accumulate on the windows, which will lead to deformation of the board.
Wooden window sills cannot be cleaned with abrasive powders, which will damage not only the paint layer, but also the structure of the tree. It is best to use the same products that are used for furniture to care for these products. Dust from the surface of the window sills can be removed with a barely flag soft cloth. At the same time, it is necessary to ensure that moisture does not accumulate on them. The appearance of condensate flowing down abundantly may indicate problems directly with the window structure itself, so we recommend that you read the article that will help you learn how to deal with this phenomenon. If the issue of condensate is not resolved, it will constantly drain onto the windowsill and spoil it very quickly.
