Features of installing a tulip sink

Many people decide to install a sink on their own at home, but first you need to choose it wisely. One of the most common options is to install a tulip sink, it, like other options, has some features.

Drawing and dimensions of the tulip shell.

If you already have all communications in your bathroom, then before you put the tulip sink, you need to measure the distance from the floor to the water supply point and, based on this, purchase a washbasin of a certain height. It is possible not to select the height in the case when the communications are planned to be installed after the installation of the tulip sink is completed.

The tulip sink can have a monolithic structure or consist of two parts: a washbasin and a stand.

All communications are hidden in the stand, the bowl rests on it, which is additionally attached to the wall. As a design flaw, one can call the fact that the cranes on it have a fixed height, and this is not always convenient for children.

What is needed to install a tulip sink

  • electric drill, drills and dowels;
  • a special siphon with the ability to drain "overflow" (if it is not included in the design, it must be purchased separately);
  • keys, screwdriver, hammer;
  • building level;
  • grout (for example, Ceresit).

In order for the sink to look good in the bathroom, its color must be in harmony with the color of the washable wallpaper or tiles.

How to install a tulip sink

Before you start, you need to dismantle the old sink. It is necessary to turn off the water and disconnect the drain. After that, the sink is unscrewed from the wall using wrenches.

Now you need to prepare a place for installing a new tulip sink. To do this, it is necessary to carefully remove the remains of cement from the walls and floor, then, according to the fasteners, holes are made in the wall. Old holes in the wall are neatly sealed with grout, it is better than cement mortar, as it dries quickly.

Everything must be done correctly so that the fasteners and holes in the wall match. It is necessary to install the washbasin and mark the places for its fastening; to check the correct installation, use the building level. The siphon is attached to the footboard using special fasteners; it is imperative to use rubberized washers. First you need to correctly connect the siphon, and only then connect the water. Many people do the opposite, and then if the installation of your tulip is done incorrectly, flooding cannot be avoided. To, you will need outside help. It is not necessary to tighten the nuts as the footrest has yet to be installed. Raise the bowl a little, put a footboard and attach the drain hose to the sewer.

The market of building materials and equipment is full of offers for every taste and color at the request of the buyer. Therefore, choosing a sink of a suitable design, color, shape does not present any difficulties in our time. A tulip washbasin can be a winning option for a bathroom.

What is a tulip washbasin

The washbasin got its name "tulip" because of its flower shape. Its structure includes a pedestal (there are also half-pedestals for a shortened version of the washbasin) and a round-shaped sink itself. The advantages of this type of washbasin include their strength and durability, all communications - pipes, a siphon are aesthetically hidden behind a stand, and the installation of taps is carried out directly behind the sink itself, which is mounted to the wall. Accordingly, how to install a tulip shell is easy to understand and the process is relatively easy to complete. Unfortunately, due to its fixed height, the tulip is not very practical for small children, but here small stands can become a way out for the convenience of babies.

Choosing the right tulip washbasin

The choice of a tulip will directly depend on the size of the bathroom and the size of the communications. If the bathroom is supposed to be overhauled with the replacement of the pipeline and sewage system, any option that attracts your attention will do. If you want to understand how to install in order to change the previous structure, then here you should operate with the distance from the floor to the supply of water pipes, and also guess with the width of the pedestal in order to hide all communications from prying eyes. You may also have to take care of the purchase of drain fittings, since, as a rule, the siphon is not supplied with the sink. Well, it's not bad if the sink is equipped with an "overflow" system, which in the future can help avoid problems with neighbors.

Due to the variety of modern models, it is not difficult to choose the best option. You just need to carefully determine the required dimensions and see which product is in harmony with the dimensions of your bathroom.

The main stages of work on the correct installation of the washbasin

Due to the absence of difficulties in the design of such a washbasin, special knowledge and skills for its installation are not required. Additionally, you can watch a video on how to install a tulip sink, which is offered after detailed instructions.

  • Firstly, for self-assembly of a tulip, you will need a hammer, a screwdriver, wrenches, a level, a drill or drill, a dowel, and spacer plugs.
  • Secondly, it is important to correctly identify the locations for the holes in the wall, which must be in perfect alignment with the tie bolt holes in the sink. To do this, it is enough to attach the sink to the wall and make the correct measurements, and then take up the drill.
  • Further, a siphon is hermetically attached to the drain of the washbasin bowl on the bolts, in which a mesh with a gasket is fixed on the seamy side. The proposed video of installing a tulip sink with your own hands will help you find out some details in more detail.
  • A tulip bowl is lightly screwed onto the tie bolts, without tightening, to the wall, under the central part of which a pedestal is attached. Here it is important to remember about the output of the corrugated siphon hose into the sewer drain pipe through a special opening at the bottom of the stand.
  • Then a correctly installed pedestal with a bowl is firmly fixed to the wall with bolts and washers. The joints of the bowl and the pedestal, the joints of the sink with the wall, to prevent water from entering them, can be treated with a special silicone transparent sealant.
  • The final stage of the work will be a simple connection of the mixer to the water pipes.

Carefully and consistently done work on the self-installation of a tulip will not only transform the bathroom, but also save on the services of a locksmith.

We have already talked about the popular model of shells, called "tulip" because of the similarity with this beautiful flower, which gives it a long pedestal, reminiscent of the stem of a tulip.

The design of the sink not only looks very aesthetically pleasing in any bathroom interior, but is also very practical. Thanks to its "leg", the shell is securely fixed and even if you lean on it, it will not fall, since the force will be transmitted to the support and then to the floor.

In addition, in the pedestal (this is how it is correct to call the leg of a tulip sink), you can place flexible hot and cold water connections, as well as a corrugation or a siphon for draining waste water from the sink into the sewer system.

Installing a tulip sink is not particularly difficult and you can easily perform all the necessary operations yourself if you use the tips given in this article.

Different designs of tulip sinks - which one to choose?

Despite the external similarity, sinks of this type still have some differences in their design, which you should be aware of before buying.

The cheapest models have one hole for water drainage and one hole for installing a tap.

This design is the simplest and most convenient for installation and operation.

But, if you plan to decorate the bathroom interior in a style that uses retro elements, then you may need a sink, where, in addition to the tap hole, there will also be two holes for hot and cold water taps. Pay attention to this.

You should also think in advance - do you need an overflow? On the one hand, it is quite convenient if you wash something in the sink by drawing water into it, plugging the outlet. This will avoid a flood in the bathroom.

But if you don't plan on regularly filling the sink, then you can do without overflow. Moreover, its presence only complicates the system of branch pipelines, and also creates additional inconveniences when cleaning with a plunger in the event of a blockage, when it is necessary to tightly plug the overflow hole.

You also need to decide on the height of the sink, color and design.

If you have decided on the design and have already bought the model you need, then you can proceed directly to the installation.

Let's see how the tulip sink installation is performed step by step with a photo.

Required tool

For installation, you will need the following tool:

  • roulette;
  • screwdriver;
  • electric drill;
  • adjustable wrench;
  • open-end wrenches;
  • pliers;
  • center punch;
  • drill for concrete;
  • drill for tiles (if there is tiles on the wall);
  • hammer;
  • level;
  • silicone sealant.

Installation of a sink with a pedestal (tulip)

Installation begins with marking the places where the sink is attached to the wall.

To do this, you need to put the sink on your leg and mark the holes.

But before that, you need to completely assemble all the fittings that are attached to the sink in order to do the fitting taking into account the entire "body kit". Attach a faucet, flexible hoses, siphon outlets or corrugation to the sink. This will allow you to determine whether it will be convenient enough to connect to the connection points of the existing water supply and sewerage networks.

The outlet is fastened through the gasket using a screwdriver, tightening the screw on the stainless steel splitter grate, which serves to catch large debris.

After that, the faucet, outlet fittings and liners are screwed to the sink.

The leg (pedestal) of the sink is placed against the wall where the sink will be located.

A sink is installed on the leg with fittings screwed to it. During the fitting process, it is advisable to check the horizontal installation of the back wall of the sink using a hydraulic level.

After that, we check whether all the connections and the outlet can freely reach the connection points. If necessary, you should immediately make adjustments - move the sink or use the liner / outlet of a different length.

After that, using a soft pencil, mark on the wall the location of the mounting holes in the ceramic shell of the sink from the side of the rear wall. In these places, you will need to drill the wall, insert dowels into the holes made and screw in the studs that will fix the sink to the wall.

When the installation sites are outlined, the drilling site is marked on the wall with the help of a core drill with a light blow of a hammer.

If the core is not at hand, you can use a carbide tipped drill.

If there are tiles on the wall, be very careful not to split them. In this case, you can use the tips from the article How to drill a tile and stick thick tape at the drilling points, which prevents the drill from sliding at the beginning of drilling.

After that, you need to drill holes to the desired depth. If the wall is papered with tiles, you must first go through the tiles with a special feather drill, and then continue drilling by rearranging the carbide tipped drill and turning the drill into percussion mode.

When the holes are ready, dowels are inserted into them.

After that, using an adjustable or open-end wrench of a suitable size, you need to tighten the pins:

That's it, threaded metal studs are screwed into the wall and you can screw the sink to them.

The leg is placed on the floor in the place of installation, and the sink is installed on the leg, putting it on the metal studs sticking out of the wall.

The sink is fixed to the studs with nuts through elastic gaskets. Tighten the nuts very carefully so that the faience does not burst at the attachment point from excessive force. As soon as the nut starts to go with effort, you should stop tightening.

In addition, when tightening the nuts, you need to tighten them in turn - a little the first, then the second, then again a little the first, then again a little second, and so on. The same method of tightening the nuts is used when installing the toilet - it is fastened to the floor in the same way by alternately tightening the nuts. This makes it possible to more evenly distribute the emerging forces in the body of a fragile plumbing fixture and prevent cracks from appearing.

Special caps are put on the nuts to prevent debris from entering and to prevent metal corrosion. A little grease can be smeared under the caps. In this place, no one will see it, and if necessary, remove the sink, the nuts can be easily unscrewed even after a year, as if you tightened them yesterday.

The problem of how to install a tulip sink with your own hands is easier to solve than it might seem at first glance. The installation technology is simple and accessible to a home craftsman with minimal plumbing skills. It is only important not to be mistaken with the size and location.

Required tools

In order not to be distracted during the installation process, it makes sense to prepare before starting work:

  • drill or hammer drill;
  • laser builder or building level;
  • pencil or marker;
  • a set of wrenches and screwdrivers;
  • silicone sealant.

In addition, you will need fasteners (plastic plugs) as well as seals for threaded connections (fumlent, but better flax with a special paste).

Step-by-step installation instructions

Installation begins with determining the location for the sink. In this case, it makes sense to take the bowl itself in hand and physically attach it to the wall in the planned place. It is necessary to consider not only ergonomics, but also the availability of connection to the water supply and sewerage system. It is also worth considering that the height of the tulip washbasin can be increased by installing it on an additional pedestal, but it will not work to lower the bowl below the length of the leg.

The procedure for installing the sink is as follows:

  1. With the help of a builder or a building level, a horizontal line is drawn on the wall corresponding to the required height of the sink.
  2. The bowl is applied at the place of installation, after which, through the fastening lugs, the points of installation of the brackets in the wall are marked with a marker. If the design of the washbasin does not allow this, then the location of the brackets is calculated taking into account the indents from the edges of the bowl. In such cases, the fastening scheme is additionally given in the documentation.
  3. Holes are drilled in the wall, plastic plugs are hammered into them.
  4. Brackets are screwed in. In this case, the thickness of the shell walls should be taken into account.
  5. A washbasin is hung on the brackets.
  6. I focus on the center of the bowl, a pedestal (leg) is installed.
  7. A siphon is placed on the sink and connected to the sewer. In some tulip models, this step must precede the pedestal installation.
  8. The mixer is mounted and connected to the water supply line. It is advisable to seal threaded joints with fumlent or flax with a special paste.

After completing the installation, it makes sense to go through the line of the junction of the sink with the wall with silicone sealant. This will prevent water splashes from dripping off the wall under the sink.

The cheapest and easiest way to install a tulip sink is to do all the work with your own hands. The process will take a minimum of time and does not require any special skills.

Usually, the installation of any sink is offered "complete" with the sale and delivery upon purchase - however, you need to pay extra for this. Many people decide to save money and do everything on their own. But not everyone knows how to install correctly. This task is not the most difficult: it is enough to have the necessary set of tools at hand and be able to handle them in an elementary way.

Before you get ready to start work, you need to prepare the following list of necessary things:

  • drill;
  • level;
  • FUM tape;
  • drills (for concrete);
  • adjustable wrench.

The bathroom wall is prepared for fixing the tulip sink Winding the fum tape on the thread of the pipe Fitting the mixer with your own hands

This is the entire set of tools and accessories that the installation of a tulip sink requires. There is only a little time and patience left to apply to them.

First, you need to prepare all the communications piping - drain, outlet of cold and hot water; if necessary, bring them to the desired area of the bathroom. Keep in mind that not every manufacturer strives to meet the standards, and therefore you need to check the height and width in advance with the parameters of the selected model. Something may need to be corrected.

DIY tulip sink installation

Sink-tulip after installation

This model is easy to install and stable. Also, a high-quality installation of a tulip sink with your own hands involves the use of "little tricks".

  • Before installing, we wrap the thread with FUM tape. This is necessary to increase bond strength and improve insulation. If the tape is not at hand, you can replace it with tow, lightly coated with oil paint.
  • “Trying on” the product: in order to determine where each tulip mount for the sink will be located, we put a pedestal and install the sink itself on top. Measure it with a level, make sure the location is symmetrical and then mark the places where the fasteners will be located.
  • A high-quality fixture for a tulip sink requires a firm hold. Although the pillar will hold it, the wobbly piece will create discomfort and unpleasant noises when touched. Therefore, it is worth treating with such a degree of responsibility as if the sink were hanging.
  • On each mark for fasteners, we drill holes with a depth equal to the length of the selected dowel. In order not to be mistaken, you can draw a mark on the drill, having previously made measurements. It is also important to respect the hole diameter.
  • Insert the dowels into the resulting holes.
  • How to fix a tulip sink? After the dowels are installed, screw the brackets into them slowly and carefully. Wrong movement can ruin the whole work, since a lopsided mount, at least, will lead to a crooked result, and in the worst case, also to a wobbly structure.
  • When installing the sink in the bathroom tulip for the nuts, use rubber gaskets or plastic. After that, the product itself will already be held without extraneous fixers.
  • The metal drain cylinder is not secured; the task of preventing water leakage is performed by a reverse corrugated hose, which can be installed in the drain hole.
  • The main drain is fixed only with gaskets on both sides - internal and external. It must be tightened so that water cannot leak and at the same time the plumbing does not suffer; a tulip shell, like any other, can crack if the threads are tightened too tightly. Observe the golden mean, although it will have to be determined "by eye".
  • A pre-selected tulip in diameter must fully match the hole.
  • Next, we install the shut-off valves. The valve should close when the boom is pulled. The angle clamp on it will regulate the closing and opening of the valve.
  • The mixer is connected to the cold and hot water outlet points using flexible hoses - screw them with the nuts at the ends. Install a sink siphon.
  • To "mask" the siphon, hoses and all outlets, a column is installed, which is also a pedestal.

Laying communications under the sink
