Specialization: professional in the field of construction and renovation (full cycle of finishing works, both internal and external, from sewerage to electrical and finishing works), installation of window structures. Hobby: see the column "SPECIALIZATION AND SKILLS"

Waterproofing tape for PVC windows, as well as other materials for installation, are used relatively rarely: their use increases the cost of work, since a set of high-quality installation tapes for installing one structure costs about 15 - 25% of the cost of the entire window.

And yet, if you plan to glaze the house "for yourself", using modern materials is not only possible, but also necessary. That is why I decided to write a short review devoted to mounting tapes, their purpose and correct use.

Purpose of mounting tapes

From a formal point of view, it is necessary to use special vapor-permeable and vapor barrier materials for the installation of PVC structures, first of all, according to the requirements of industry standards. The use of tapes is regulated by the following documents:

  • GOST R 53338-2009 "Self-expanding vapor-permeable self-adhesive tapes for construction purposes";
  • GOST 30971-2012 “Seams of assembly units for joining window blocks to wall openings. General technical conditions ";
  • GOST R 52749-2007 "Window assembly seams with vapor-permeable self-expanding tapes".

That is, the installation of windows in accordance with GOST without the use of tapes is impossible in principle. But there are also rational explanations for the need to use such materials. Some of them are set out in the already mentioned GOSTs, and some can be formulated based on many years of washing, installation, repair and operation of translucent structures:

  1. Self-expanding polyurethane-based self-expanding foam is used to seal the joint between the window and the window opening. Despite the presence of a number of objective advantages, the foam also has disadvantages - first of all, it is vulnerability to ultraviolet light.
  2. To protect the foam from UV radiation, self-adhesive tape is used, which covers the installation seam from the outside.

  1. The next aspect that justifies the need to use special tapes for installation is ventilation, or rather, fluid drainage. When the window is operated without additional protection, which is formed in the room, it is partially collected inside the assembly seam, reducing the efficiency of heat saving. To avoid this, a vapor barrier material can be used to glue it from the inside of the room.
  2. However, it is important not only to protect the foam from moisture penetration, but also to ensure the unhindered escape of water vapor outside the installation seam. For this purpose, only a vapor-permeable tape is used for exterior decoration, which guarantees normal diffusion of humid air. .

The question of whether it is necessary to glue a vapor barrier tape or use a vapor-permeable material is largely controversial. On the one hand, the effectiveness of these materials is really quite high, therefore, using them in the installation will clearly affect the functionality of the window in the best way.

On the other hand, the price of mounting tapes is also rather big, therefore, to save money, you can choose other methods: from the inside, for example, to install a plastic slope (in principle, it provides good hydro and vapor barrier), and from the outside - to finish the mounting seam with vapor-permeable plaster, followed by painting ...

And yet I repeat: the use of special tapes when installing a window structure in an opening is fully justified both in terms of standards and in terms of optimizing the indoor climate.

Varieties of materials

Type 1. Hydro-vapor barrier tape

A variety of tapes are used for the installation of PVC windows. Each type of such material has its own characteristics and advantages, therefore, in order to achieve the maximum effect, materials should be combined, combining their functional advantages in the best way.

I will start my review of the materials used in the installation of windows, with the most popular - with a hydro-vapor barrier tape:

  1. Self-adhesive waterproofing installation tape (HPL) is a tape material that bridges the installation gap from the side of the room.
  2. The basis of the tape is a polyethylene or polyethylene foam film. On one side, the strip is laminated with a thin layer of aluminum foil, and on the other, one or two strips of adhesive are applied for installation.
  3. The adhesive mixture used for application provides good adhesion to most materials - wood, concrete, brick, etc. Problems can arise when you try to paste over an opening made of gas or foam concrete, therefore, before buying installation material, I recommend that you consult with the seller or carefully study what the manufacturer's instructions say about this .
  4. The structure of the tape ensures almost complete tightness of the finished assembly seam: neither the place of gluing, nor the polyethylene strip itself allows air and water vapor to pass through.

  1. The polymer structure provides the product with additional advantages: the finishing material is not afraid of not only moisture, but also the effects of acids, alkalis, and other chemically active substances, and also does not degrade under the influence of ultraviolet radiation.

Type 2. Insulated waterproofing tape

Insulated tape is, in fact, a modification of a conventional hydro-vapor barrier material. Its key features include:

  • increased thickness of the base, which is made exclusively of expanded polyethylene;
  • denser foil layer based on durable polypropylene film.

Thanks to such design features:

  1. The product prevents the diffusion of liquid and water vapor and the penetration of moisture into the middle part of the assembly seam just as well. This ensures the most effective hydro and vapor barrier.
  2. The increased thickness of the base and its porous structure help to reduce heat loss. Foamed polyethylene acts as a window insulation.
  3. Finally, the foil coating also plays an important role. A thin layer of metal on an elastic base reflects infrared radiation, acting as a "thermal mirror". In this case, most of the heat generated by the heating devices is returned to the room.

To the disadvantages of such products, I would attribute them to rather large dimensions: finishing the mounting gap with insulated tapes requires subsequent masking of the abutment unit using slopes, which is not always included in our plans.

Type 3. Pre-compressed tape (PSUL)

Another versatile material is PSUL (pre-compressed sealing tape). This material is used to ensure self-ventilation of the assembly seam:

  1. The tape is a strip of porous polyurethane foam impregnated with a special composition. On one side, the strip is equipped with an adhesive layer protected by a special protective coating.
  2. The product is supplied rolled (rolls or bobbins). It is necessary to unwind the material immediately before installation, since over time the product loses its properties.
  3. During installation, the protective coating is removed and the PSUL is glued to the window structure. After that, the impregnation reacts with air, due to which the linear dimensions of the product increase. The tape expands and completely bridges the mounting gap.

Full and high-quality overlap is possible only if the nominal size of the product specified by the manufacturer corresponds to the dimensions of the gap. So, for example, if I need to close up a 35 mm gap with my own hands, then for work I take a PSUL about 40 mm wide.

  1. After expansion, the material becomes completely vapor permeable. This ensures an unimpeded escape of water from the assembly seam.

Type 4. Inner tapes

In addition to these varieties, other products are used for interior decoration of slopes. It is convenient to analyze their main features using the table that I will give below:

Marking Description
Sun A product that is used for the installation of window structures, if you plan to finish the slopes with a dry method (drywall, plastic, lining, etc.).

Provides effective vapor barrier, prevents moisture from entering the thickness of the assembly seam.

The tape is mounted using a self-adhesive layer with a protective coating.

Sun + It is used for the same purposes as the BC tape, but at the same time it has a greater thickness.

An additional advantage is the presence of a foil layer, which provides more efficient vapor and heat insulation.

VM Hydro and vapor barrier material, which is used if it is planned to plaster the slopes on the inside of the window opening.

We protect the polyurethane foam from moisture penetration, while ensuring maximum adhesion to the plaster mass.

VM + A more effective version of the previous product, it is used for the same purposes. The key feature is increased moisture resistance.

Other types of mounting tapes

In addition to the products described above, tapes of other types are used for the installation of translucent structures:

  1. Diffusion tape for outdoor decoration. It is used in combination with PSUL or polyurethane foam. Provides protection of the assembly seam from moisture and ultraviolet radiation while maintaining vapor permeability. Finishing the junction with diffuse material allows you to maintain the natural level of ventilation: from the middle of the mounting gap, air will freely escape to the outside.

  1. Butyl rubber mounting tape under the windowsill. As the name suggests, it is used to seal the junction under the window sill and to protect the insulation from blowing, moisture and heat loss. Like other materials in this category, installation is carried out using a self-adhesive layer.
  2. Non-woven fabric for installation under the ebb. It has high vapor permeability, is glued to the base of the opening under the drain bar. In addition to providing ventilation, it significantly reduces the noise of galvanized metal ebbs, acting as a shock absorber and extinguishing some of the loud sounds.
  3. Adhesive tape is a versatile material used for the installation of lightweight structures. For example, self-adhesive reflective film is popular, and the mosquito net with fastening tape is also very convenient to use.

How to use it correctly?

The technology of using assembly years when installing PVC-profile windows is quite simple. I use the following work algorithm:

  1. First, I prepare the opening: I remove the old structure, level the walls, dust and dry all surfaces. It is desirable that the edges of the opening are more or less even, therefore, before installing the window, it may be necessary to refine them using a rapidly hardening solution.
  2. Then I cut the waterproofing tapes, PSUL and diffuse material. I cut the products along the length of each side of the window with an overlap of at least 10 cm (these sections are used to form the corner joint).

  1. I stick the tapes on the window frame, removing the protective film from one of the adhesive strips. On the front surface of the structure, I paste the PSUL from the outside in a compressed state.

It is desirable that the PSUL be completely hidden behind the wall railing, therefore, before gluing, I usually try on the window to the opening, making marks at the installation site.

  1. I install the structure in the opening and fix it in the chosen way - either using anchors or using mounting plates.

  1. I fill all the gaps with self-expanding polyurethane foam.
  2. I remove the protective strips from the inner and outer tape and glue their edges to the opening, completely blocking the foam.
  3. If the installation is carried out in the winter, I use specialized materials with glue that retains adhesion at low temperatures.

  1. Before installing additional elements, I separately glue the material that protects the space under the windowsill and under the drain bar to the support profile or the bottom of the frame.
  2. Under the ebb itself, I stick the PSUL strip on the horizontal surface: it acts as a shock absorber, and therefore the metal visor will not rattle when gusts of wind and rain drops on it.

Cost of materials

As I noted at the outset, the high price of mounting tapes partly limits their distribution. But at the same time, if you know exactly what you need, there is a chance to meet the budget allotted for glazing.

Conclusion

Both vapor-permeable and vapor barrier tape for plastic windows may not be included in the mandatory set of parts for successful installation. But their use allows you to fully comply with the requirements of GOST. And also to ensure the formation of a favorable microclimate in the room - primarily due to the normalization of the assembly seam.

The video in this article will help you master the technology of using such parts, and when choosing a product, you can consult with me and other experts by asking questions in the comments.

To protect the assembly seams in window openings from moisture, a vapor barrier tape is used. It is made from butyl rubber or aluminum. This material is glued to damp foam at the seams, extending the life of the windows.

When installing a window in an opening, remember that its service life is related to how competent the installation will be. Even the highest quality structures will not be used for a long time if the installation is incorrect. Wrong work will cause moisture to gradually penetrate the walls, leading to the destruction of building materials and the spread of mold.

Vapor barrier tape

When installing the frame, consider a few important points:

  • On the inside of the room, we make a denser layer of the mounting mortar (for example, foam).
  • For high-quality sealing of all gaps, we use three-layer protection - the outer material saves from the effects of precipitation, the middle layer is responsible for thermal insulation, and the coating of the inner surface is for vapor barrier.

Vapor barrier provides reliable protection of the thermal insulation layer from condensation, which is present not only in the bathroom, but also in the usual room. In the process of finishing window slopes, we glue a special tape. The principle of vapor barrier is based on overlapping the contact of moisture with the foam, which forms the middle protective layer. For these purposes, materials with low elasticity and permeability to water and air are suitable. When installing windows, you cannot save on vapor barrier. This neglect will lead to rapid wear of frames, plaster and finishing materials.

To protect the seam, special vapor barrier tapes are usually used. They are available in a coiled, compressed, sponge-like material. By absorbing moisture, the material swells, filling up all the existing cracks. The vapor barrier tape for plastic windows has several advantages:

  1. 1.Insulates moisture;
  2. 2. it is consumed economically, practically without waste;
  3. 3. does not emit toxic substances;
  4. 4. Easy to stick on;
  5. 5. has a long service life.

2 Classification - what characteristics to pay attention to

Moisture insulation tapes are available with one or two strips of adhesive. The second option allows you to process the joint between the window and the wall in a better quality. The material is classified according to the periods of use:

  • summer (air temperature - 5-40 ° C);
  • winter (temperature is below 5 ° C).

Depending on the nature of the surface to be treated, tapes are produced in various sizes, so that any seams can be insulated. When choosing a material, keep in mind that it should exceed the gap by 4.5 cm in width. Foam tapes are suitable for working from the outside of the building, which will provide a reliable seal.

Moisture insulation tape

Adhesive finishing material made of butyl rubber is intended for processing window, balcony, door frames and joints between panels. A non-woven layer is laid inside it. After gluing, such a strip is primed, plastered, wallpaper is glued or painted. There is a full-butyl vapor barrier tape made according to the Robiband system. It provides better processing of the assembly seam.

Metallized vapor barrier material is used for pasting joints with joints in rooms with high air humidity - bathrooms, baths, saunas. A layer of glue over the entire surface in this form greatly simplifies the work process. Manufacturers produce metallized tape of different widths. When choosing material, add 45 mm to the seam width.

The tape, which has a protective polypropylene strip, withstands mechanical stress well. In addition, it does not react with acids, organic solvents and alkalis.

3 We understand the variety of types of tapes - VS or GPL?

First on the list is PSUL (pre-compressed self-expanding sealing tape). It ensures a good adherence of the window frame or door frame to the wall. This tape is used for vapor barrier external joints and seams.

The next material is a vapor barrier VS. It is used for sealing joints when dry finishing. For example, for sandwich panels, plasterboard, plastic surfaces, etc. The tape has a layer of glue along the entire width - this property greatly simplifies the installation process. There is an improved version - ВС +. It is supplemented with an anti-adhesive film. This additional coating provides strong adhesion of insulation to building materials.

Robiband tape VM for vapor barrier

Robiband VM tape for vapor barrier is the next high-quality option for processing seams. It is used for interior work, and a wet plaster solution is applied on top. VM + vapor barrier is a sophisticated option with better performance characteristics.

The last type is GPL (waterproofing material). It is produced from high quality foamed polyethylene. The tape has one laminated side and an additional metallized layer. Its second surface is completely covered with glue. This tape is universal, that is, it can be used for all types of work. Its type is GPL-S tape, which has similar characteristics.

4 How to stick insulation - we work without mistakes

The vapor barrier material not only provides protection against moisture, but also has an alternative property when properly glued - sound absorption. The application of a vapor barrier tape to the seams is done in one piece, there should be no breaks. Before starting work, measure the length of the surfaces to be treated.

The gluing process consists of several steps:

  1. 1. Clean the window opening from dirt, dust and debris.
  2. 2. Before installation, remove the PVC window and wipe with a dry cloth.
  3. 3. Place the structure in place and mark the tape attachment points on the frame and wall.
  4. 4. The tape is attached to the window frame before foam is applied along the seam.
  5. 5. Take out the structure and stick a vapor barrier on its surface around the perimeter.
  6. 6. Before reinstalling the window, remove the remaining protective film from the adhesive surface.
  7. 7. When gluing the material, do not allow creases to form. This defect will allow droplets of liquid to pass under the vapor barrier, impairing performance.

In order for the window structure to serve long enough, its installation must be carried out in strict accordance with the existing technology. The outer material for steam, heat and water insulation must be glued after the polyurethane foam has completely polymerized. The seam under the windowsill is processed last.

If the tape is glued under a layer of plaster, then it must have a special layer that will provide strong adhesion to the building material. The uneven joint between the wall and the window frame is closed with a cover strip, and a vapor barrier is glued onto it. The use of building materials for wall decoration is permissible only if the requirements for water permeability are fully observed.

If metallized tape is used for vapor barrier, additional reinforcement may be required when applied to a rough surface. To enhance the adhesive effect, self-adhesive tape with one or two stripes of glue is used. They additionally process the joints of the vapor barrier, eliminating and smoothing out defects (places of peeling and wrinkling) formed during operation.

The question of the need to vapor barrier windows by gluing the joints of window frames and the slope of the outer wall with vapor barrier tape does not have an unambiguous answer. But having decided to install plastic windows in the house, it is very useful to understand some aspects of the problem:

The use of vapor barrier tapes increases the cost of the installation. But it is not a fact that a high quality installation will be achieved with the tape sticker. Preparation of the base for the tape is very important, and the sticker technology has subtleties. Installation violations lead to the fact that the tape will simply peel off and cease to perform its task of vapor barrier. In addition, the unevenness of the opening makes it difficult to install the tape, and they do not always know how and do they do quality preparation.

One of the experts' opinions is that with optimal organization of heating and air exchange in the house, windows do not give any condensation or mold in the corners. The dew point is on the outside of the insulating wall layer, and there can be no mold in the window corners. It does not matter whether the PSUL windows are glued with a membrane or not. But if there are problems with the ventilation hood and the heating does not work well in the house, then the vapor barrier of the windows will give a positive effect (although the problems of heating and ventilation must be solved in a comprehensive manner). In any case, if a company that provides services for the installation of PVC windows stipulates the conditions for their future operation by the customer and offers options for sealing joints - this is definitely a plus for the company. Since there are "companies" and workers who "do not like" the abbreviations of PSUL and argue that they do not spare foam, and the guarantee for the window is a whole year. Unfortunately, in the end, the installation is not always successful and for the second winter it does not blow from the cracks of the windows, and in the off-season there is no condensation on the slopes.

Seams between window frames and outside walls are one of the weakest links and require careful waterproofing and thermal insulation. Mounting foam, filling the space between the opening and the frame, perfectly insulates from airborne noise and performs the task of thermal insulation of the joint. But moisture and ultraviolet light can destroy the foam in a period of several months to two years. They solve this problem by protecting the foamed joint with a seal. From the outside, waterproofing is performed so that atmospheric moisture does not get on the porous insulation, from the inside of the room, the joint is glued with a vapor barrier tape.

Vapor barrier is necessary so that moisture from the outside air does not penetrate into the thermal insulation materials of the joint. According to the norms, the internal seams for PVC windows must have a vapor permeability of no more than 0.01 mg / m * h * Pa. The vapor barrier is mounted before the windows are installed, sealing the joint from the inside: the window block is installed in the opening without fixing, the areas for the adhesive tape are marked, then the block is removed and the vapor barrier tape is glued.

Means for protecting the joints of windows and balcony doors:

  • Silicone sealants
  • Padded insulation - cords, tow, moss
  • Foil tapes
  • PSUL tapes and butyl rubber tapes

For the correct choice, it is important to consider the type of window finish and the position of the joint. To protect the joints of frames and plasterboard and plastic slopes (dry cladding) and to protect windows with plastered slopes, different insulation means are used. For wooden windows installed in log cabins, natural fillers are usually used - sphagnum, jute, linen tow, etc.

Vapor barrier device

There are three layers:

  1. From the inside - heat protection prevents heat loss from the room to the street
  2. The middle load-bearing insulating layer provides thermal and acoustic insulation. These tasks are solved by polyurethane foam or other porous material. It is rational to include vapor barrier self-adhesive tapes into this inner layer if the window unit is mounted in damp rooms - kitchens, baths or showers
  3. The outer layer waterproofs the joint and protects against the penetration of cold outdoor air

Vapor barrier tapes are available with a single-sided adhesive layer and double-sided. A one-sided sticker is used if the tape is mounted on the side surface of the window frame. Double-sided tape gives an advantage in the choice of fasteners: on the frame or in the window opening. According to climatic versions, tapes are also produced in two types - for areas with low winter temperatures - a winter version of the tape, and for areas where temperatures do not fall below + 5⁰C - a summer version.

The basis for the adhesive layers of the tapes is butyl rubber or metal.

The main types of vapor barrier tapes:

  • PSUL, or pre-compressed sealing tape - is used for finishing and vapor barrier of external joints, provides a tight connection of the window frame with the external wall. the base material is butyl rubber, the thickness and elasticity of the tapes give good insulation.
  • ВС - vapor barrier tapes for sealing joints for dry finishing of slopes - made of plastic or drywall. gluing with BC tapes reduces the risk of condensation.
  • VM - vapor barrier tapes, attached to the window frame, with an overlap, in order to improve the thermal insulation of the joints.
  • ГПЛ - polyethylene foam tape, laminated on one side, with metal strips and an adhesive layer on the entire width.

In addition to the main layer of uncrosslinked polyethylene foam, which has a thickness of 2 mm and is waterproof, the GPL tape has a second layer - simultaneously vapor barrier and protective. the thickness of the outer layer is only 20 microns, the material is polypropylene.

GPL tapes are used for all types of door and window blocks as universal. They combine two tasks - waterproofing and vapor barrier. The structure of foamed polyethylene is elastic and closed-porous, so the material does not absorb moisture, hygroscopicity is practically zero. The tapes are flexible and suitable for mounting on uneven surfaces. Lamination with metal and the quality of the main polymer (polypropylene as a protective layer) determine chemical resistance in both acidic and alkaline environments, and as a result, a good durability of GPL tapes.

Produce tapes ГПЛ in standard sizes of width of window and door blocks, width 9; 12; fifteen; and 20 cm, in rolls of 15 m.

Features of installation of vapor barrier tapes

  • The minimum temperature for mounting tapes is + 10⁰С
  • Sticking tapes is carried out on the prepared surface - complete cleaning of all contaminants, dust removal and degreasing. Preparation is essential for proper vapor barrier function
  • Layout of lines for fastening vapor barrier tapes. Determine the position of the frame in the opening without fixing, mark the lines for sticking the tapes, then remove the frame and mount the tape according to the marking
  • The protective paper strips are removed from the tapes just before the final installation of the frames
  • After gluing the tapes, the joint is filled with polyurethane foam
  • The tapes under the windowsills are mounted last
  • If wet plaster is planned on the vapor barrier tape, then the outer side of the tape must ensure adhesion with the mortar. From the assortment of vapor barrier tapes, it is possible to select a material with the desired properties
  • Tapes are glued along the perimeters of the frames without breaks, in continuous stripes. The overlap and overlap of the tapes is not needed; at the joints, use adhesives recommended by the manufacturers, or tape

The question of the need for vapor barrier of windows is decided by each owner, based on the specific operating conditions of the windows. Budget options for mounting the tape are absolutely excluded. But many experts believe that the vapor barrier of windows is by no means a reinsurance, but a real opportunity to increase the resource of window systems and improve the indoor climate, and saving in this case is not a completely correct approach.

Salute, readers!

I love thematic forums, where everyone, with his own opinion, teaches others.

What battles sometimes flare up there!

So this time, at one of these forums, I was able to witness disputes about the need to use a vapor barrier tape.

One forum member, foaming at his mouth, argued that she was not needed and that this was a good publicity stunt for one of the Western companies, another explained why it’s bad without it.

If you still don't know what a vapor barrier tape is, then this topic is just for you.

Welcome!

Vapor barrier tape for windows

Vapor barrier tapes for windows, as well as a good finishing of slopes and assembly joints, will provide decent window performance. In order for the window in your home to function well and for a long time, you should not miss such a moment as installing a vapor barrier tape.

Sealed tapes used to isolate the assembly seam from vapors and moisture from the adjacent room prevent condensate from escaping onto the slopes.

If you have a kitchen, a room with a pool or a sauna, then installing a vapor barrier tape on the windows is simply necessary for you.

Varieties of vapor barrier tape

Tapes can be with one or two adhesive strips. Two adhesive strips are used to attach the tape with one side to the window and the other to the wall.

Vapor barrier tapes are also classified by weather periods:

  • for the summer period with air temperatures from + 5 ° С to + 35 ° С;
  • for the winter period with temperatures below 0 ° C.

The width of the tape also varies depending on the needs, which makes it possible to provide reliable vapor barrier for joints of various sizes. When choosing vapor barrier tapes, keep in mind that its width should be about 45 mm larger than the width of the assembly seam.

Outdoor tapes consist of foamed materials (for this work, well-sealing materials with plaster mortar are needed, which will provide the required vapor barrier for the outer layer).

The vapor barrier tape can be butyl rubber, for tightness of interpanel joints or for installing door or window blocks.

This tape contains non-woven fabric. During the installation process, it is primed, plastered and painted. This type is also self-adhesive.

There are metallized vapor barrier tapes on the market to protect the assembly seam from high humidity for dry finishing of slopes.

General information on installing vapor barrier tape

  • Initially, you need to prepare your opening: clean the inner and outer surfaces of the opening and frame from dirt, dust and other debris. The frame is inserted into the opening and is temporarily not secured.
  • Then gently mark the line on the frame for attaching the vapor barrier tape.
  • After calculating and marking the window, we remove the frame and glue our internal vapor barrier tapes. The paper strip that protects the inner adhesive layer, which is subsequently attached to the walls, cannot be removed.

As a rule, the installation of a vapor barrier tape on the structure is carried out before the seam is foamed.

Helpful advice!

Therefore, the protective paper strips can be removed from the vapor barrier strips before finishing, dampening and filling with foam.

This will help you maintain the adhesive properties of the tape. If you are conducting a hidden installation, then the tape should be attached to the ends of the structure from above and to the sides, and from the bottom to the installation profile.

  • External heat-insulating tapes can be glued no earlier than the complete polymerization of the polyurethane foam will be made.
  • The installation of the vapor barrier tape under the windowsill can be done last. When a vapor barrier tape is installed under the plaster layer, the tape must have an outer coating, which will provide the necessary adhesion to this plaster layer.

In the event that the window quarter with gaps between the frame and the wall, a different technique is used: an uneven joint can be closed with a window strip, and a vapor barrier tape can be glued onto it.

Installation of a vapor barrier tape on windows is installed in a continuous layer along the entire contour of the opening.

Do not forget that the use of finishing building materials in combination with a vapor barrier tape is allowed only if the moisture-permeable characteristics are observed.

Installing the internal vapor barrier sealing tape

For internal sealing of the assembly seam, the following is used:

a) vapor barrier tape (duplicated) based on aluminum foil, lined with nonwoven fabric, allows you to protect the assembly seam from the inside from moisture and prevents it from escaping from the seam to the surface of the inner slopes.

For easy and secure fixation, the tape has two adhesive strips of glue and butyl, located on two different sides. It is recommended to apply along the entire perimeter of the window for subsequent finishing of slopes with a dry method.

b) The vapor-proof sealing duplicated tape is made of a non-woven fabric covered with a self-adhesive plastoelastic mass based on butyl rubber of high tack.

The peculiarity of butyl rubber tapes is their rather large weight. And if we compare butyl rubber and reinforced foil tapes with the same width of 120 mm, it turns out that reinforced foil tape is almost 5 times lighter than butyl rubber tape.

The low weight of the belts makes it easier to work with them during installation, and also significantly reduces transport costs when transporting belts over long distances.

However, tapes based on reinforced foil with adhesive strips adhere only to a well-cleaned and degreased surface of the inner slope, while butyl rubber tapes have a tighter adhesion and better adhesion to the wall opening.

To install the internal vapor barrier sealing tape, proceed as follows:

  1. Cut the tape into pieces equal to the width and length of the window + 10 cm (to form corner joints). Docking of tapes along the length is allowed "overlap", not less than ½ of the tape width.
  2. Remove the protective paper from the side of the duplicated strip from the vapor barrier tape and glue it to the frame profile from the outside.
  3. The tape is attached by means of a self-adhesive duplicated mounting strip in a taut state (tightly, without folds and bulges) to the outer surface of the box from the inside vertically and horizontally to the ceiling. The inner edge of the adhesive must line up with the inner edge of the frame. The tape protecting the butyl rubber layer is not removed at this stage of installation.

The adhesive strip has a sufficiently high resistance to low temperatures without loss of adhesion properties.

Lack of adhesion can occur if the acrylic adhesive strip is kept in the cold for a long time with the release paper removed.

Also, the adhesion of the glue strip decreases when working with cold window blocks, since when the worker breathes, steam (moisture) is released, which partially condenses on the surface of the cold window block, which also reduces the adhesion of the glue strips.

To prevent this defect, it is recommended to keep the adhesive layers with the removed release paper for the minimum possible time, and also to wipe the surface of the window block with a dry cloth or paper towel just before gluing the tapes to it.

How to properly apply vapor barrier tape on PVC windows

Question: How to properly apply vapor barrier tape for PVC windows and at what temperature?

Answer: Installation of vapor barrier tapes on plastic windows is carried out as usual in those rooms where there is high air humidity - kitchen, sauna, swimming pool.

The tape allows you to protect the installation seam from moisture and steam emanating from the room and thus prevent condensation from escaping onto window slopes. Vapor barrier tapes are produced with one and two adhesive strips.

It is very convenient to attach the tape with two adhesive strips to the window and to the slope. Vapor barrier tapes are divided into summer and winter, depending on the weather conditions in the room.

Summer tapes can be used at air temperatures from +5 to + 35C, and winter ones at air temperatures below 0 degrees. Choosing a tape for windows should be of such a width that it is 45 millimeters wider than the width of the assembly seam. This will allow you to provide reliable vapor barrier for the assembly joints of your windows.

The very technology of installing windows and using a vapor barrier tape is as follows. We clean the opening from dirt and dust, install the window frame and without fixing it, mark it on the walls of the opening and on the window frame of the fastening line of the vapor barrier tape.

We remove the frame from the opening and glue a vapor barrier tape on it, we do not remove the protective strip on the part that will be glued to the wall!

Hydro-vapor barrier tape (GPL).

The basis is foamed polyethylene with high thermal insulation properties. Due to the closed cellular structure, polyethylene foam has an extremely low hydroscopicity, i.e. practically does not absorb moisture.

Polyethylene foam gives the tape elasticity, which is necessary for sealing seams with various irregularities. The outer layer is a metallized polypropylene film.

Polypropylene film has high mechanical strength and resistance to alkalis, acids and organic solvents, due to this, the reflective layer is reliably protected from oxidation and mechanical damage.

It is important!

In addition, polypropylene film is a good vapor barrier.

To prevent the layers from sticking together in the roll, the sticky layer is protected by a siliconized film.

Application: heat, hydro, vapor insulation of assembly seams and joints in various building structures - window and door blocks, metal products, concrete, wood, plastic, etc.

Hydro-vapor barrier tape (GPL-S).

Self-adhesive heat-, hydro-, vapor barrier tapes - consist of foamed polyethylene laminated on one side with a metallized polypropylene film, on the other side a layer of special glue is applied, which allows the material to be securely fixed on metal, brick, concrete, wood, plastic and other structures.

Helpful information

Installation of PVC windows involves the use of special insulating materials. This category includes foam for PVC windows and tape. Each of these materials has a specific purpose. As a rule, the tape serves to insulate the seams from dust and moisture, preventing the formation of mold and mildew in the joints. In turn, the foam compensates for the effects of temperature changes and provides reliable sound insulation.

At a relatively low cost, it has excellent performance parameters, reliably protecting the seams from dust and moisture. In addition, its installation is carried out without special tools. The self-adhesive surface adheres tightly to the base without much effort.

Foam for windows

Insulation of windows with polyurethane foam has recently become especially important. By correctly installing the window unit, you can significantly reduce heat loss. Naturally, the effectiveness of such insulation is determined by the properties of the material. And here the question usually arises: polyurethane foam for PVC windows - which is better? Basically, the insulating characteristics depend on the components included in the foam, as well as on the production technologies used by the manufacturer.

Vapor barrier is required for plastic windows. The vapor barrier tape allows you to close joints, seams, protect the structure from wind and precipitation. Thanks to this element, cold air will not enter the room through the joints, which will ensure the greatest air tightness of the room and minimum heat loss.

How to mount windows correctly?

Modern builders most often use polyurethane foam for installation. M aboutthe sealing tape for windows together with the sealant is applied after the foam has dried. It is needed in order to protect the material from moisture, as well as close possible cracks and stop cold air from entering the room. If this condition is neglected, in less than a year, cracks will appear between the window frame and the wall, through which cold air will enter the room. Drafts will appear, the windows will sweat a lot and freeze at the joints.

What is vapor barrier used for in plastic structures?

It is worth considering that the more correct the installation is, the more reliable the structure will be and will be able to serve you longer. Even if, but are inserted incorrectly, you will not get the desired effect.

It is necessary to ensure that the workers must fulfill the following conditions:

  • The inside of the installation gap must be filled with thicker foam than the outside.
  • The system must be three-layer. The first layer on the street side protects the whole cake from weather conditions, the middle layer is responsible for thermal insulation, and the inner layer protects against condensation.

A vapor barrier tape is necessary to ensure the protection of the structure from water vapor.

In order for the vapor barrier not to interfere with the plastering, special tapes should be used, on top of which the room can be finished.

What should you know about sealing?

Most often, the windows are fastened with special bolts and: this material at the same time serves as a reliable lock, allowing you to adjust the position of the frame before the foam hardens, and high-quality insulation. However, sealing for the material is extremely important, since when moisture enters, the foam begins to deteriorate, crumble and turn yellow over time, which negatively affects its properties.

Window mounting tape is excellent for protecting foam. Even if you are going to use platbands that will protect the structure from weather conditions, and can also give the frame a decorative look, it is worth sticking tape before installing them. It will help to make the insulation of high quality, while making the work not much more expensive.

The most inexpensive and easy-to-install vapor barrier for windows is a special tape, which anyone can handle.

Any window needs additional sealing. This is especially important if the street noise has increased, a draft has appeared, and heat is lost in winter. It is best to do insulation in warm weather. For this, many methods are used, up to replacing the window. Fortunately, there are building materials that successfully solve this problem. This material is considered a tape for insulation.

About insulation

The microclimate of the room depends on the windows. Because of the non-insulated windows, the glasses fog up, cracks and fungus appear on the slopes, there is always a draft and street noise. To effectively insulate windows, it is necessary to determine the reasons for the low thermal insulation.

Most often they are as follows:

  1. Wooden windows

First of all, insulation is required for old window structures for the following reasons:

  • earlier the glass was fixed in the frame with a special putty. Over time, it dries up and crumbles;
  • the frames dry out, so cracks and gaps appear between the glazing bead and the glass;
  • the sashes are deformed and do not hold tightly to the frame.
  1. Plastic windows

It is mistakenly believed that such windows are quite airtight, therefore they do not need insulation. Unfortunately, after a few years, the seal collapses, and one cannot do without insulation.

There are other reasons why it is necessary to deal with plastic windows:

  • violation of window installation technology;
  • distortion of the window structure due to shrinkage of the house;
  • factory defects of the window structure;
  • mechanical damage to structural elements.

Varieties of insulation tapes

Widespread use of tapes for window insulation is explained by a number of reasons:

  • no annual replacement required;
  • insulation is carried out in a short time on its own;
  • there is no dirt when pasting, since no water is used;
  • no adhesive traces remain on the frame;
  • no diffusion of the adhesive layer with the paint of the frame.

But this method of insulation also has disadvantages:

  • after gluing, you cannot open the window sashes;
  • poor quality or poorly glued tape lags behind the frame in small sections.

In hardware stores, they offer two types of tapes that differ in the way they are installed.

  1. Pasting

Foam tape with adhesive base

Belts of this type have a wide grip. The adhesive is applied during manufacture (self-adhesive type) or during installation work.

To create a self-adhesive tape, polyvinyl chloride, rubber and polyethylene foam (foam rubber) are used.

Due to the ductility of these materials, the tape is easily compressed to the size of the gap. So that the insulation does not stand out against the background of the window, dyes are added: black, brown, white.

Usually, the packaging indicates the size of the gap that the tape covers. Popular options with sizes 3 - 7 mm.

Foam bands were the first to be used. Their popularity is due to a number of advantages:

  • high compression ratio;
  • the frame does not collapse in places of insulation;
  • low cost;
  • high protection efficiency.

These tapes have negative qualities:

  • insufficient efficiency for large gaps;
  • short service life. Effectively work during one winter season;
  • in cheap models, the adhesive tape is poorly fixed;
  • low resistance to water.

Important!

It is more convenient to use self-adhesive tapes on foam rubber for insulation.

They stay on the window longer and regulate the degree of sash pressing.

  1. Sealing

D - shaped tubular gasket with adhesive base

This type of tape has a hollow tubular shape, which is why heat is retained. Rubber and polyvinyl chloride are selected as materials.

On one side of the tape, there is a groove hook or a paper-backed adhesive coating.

It is believed that the groove is more resistant to mechanical stress.

The following qualities are considered advantages:

  • gaps up to 0.7 cm are blocked;
  • any temperature drops are maintained;
  • it is possible to choose a color to match the color of the frame;
  • the use of the window is not limited;
  • affordable cost.

But most of the disadvantages apply to adhesive tapes:

  • not suitable for all window designs;
  • when the temperature drops, the adhesive layer is destroyed;
  • with frequent deformations, delamination occurs in the glued places;
  • the foam tape gets wet quickly and dust adheres to it. For this reason, frequent replacements are carried out.

The tube seals are checked annually. If necessary, individual fragments are replaced.

Typically, the tape is selected according to three criteria.

By material

Main advantages:

  • low cost;
  • high elasticity, allowing you to close gaps of different sizes.

There are also disadvantages:

  • due to the porous structure, moisture is quickly absorbed. The drying process takes a very long time;
  • low durability. With prolonged use, the material turns yellow and crumbles.

Unfortunately, such tapes are rarely used for window insulation, as they increase the cost of the window structure by up to 15%.

  1. Rubber - used for the manufacture of two types of tapes: self-adhesive and sealing.

Tubular groove seals

Self-adhesive tapes are made on the basis of synthetic rubber and have all its positive qualities: elasticity and resistance to temperature fluctuations.

Rubber seals are not afraid of aggressive media, therefore they serve for a very long time.

  1. Polyurethane foam (PPE) - porous polyethylene foam material.

Due to their high elasticity, they are very effective tapes for small gaps. Good insulating qualities. Due to the presence of air in the structure, a heat-insulating environment is created.

Its use is limited by its ability at high temperatures to turn into a liquid toxic state.

By manufacturer

In hardware stores, there are tapes from different manufacturers.

However, only materials of the following brands are in demand:

  • Russia - Profitrast, Econ, Bison.
  • Germany - KIMTEC, Deventer.
  • Poland - Sanok.

Domestic manufacturers, as a rule, work according to European technologies and produce high-quality material no worse than foreign samples. At the same time, although German and Polish tapes are more expensive, they last longer.

By cost

Insulation tapes are sold retail and in coils from 6 to 10 meters.

Since a standard window requires about 5 meters of self-adhesive insulation, it is most often purchased at retail.

The price range is very wide.

For a running meter of Russian material, you need to pay up to 15 rubles, and the most expensive German rubber heaters will cost 50 rubles.

Features of preparing a window for insulation

The preparation of the window for insulation with tape is almost the same as the preparation for other insulation. However, there are some peculiarities.

The main steps are as follows:

  1. Everything is removed from the windowsill. Blinds are removed from the window.
  1. The frames are washed with soapy water and then dried. The tape needs a dry and grease-free surface.
  1. Glasses are carefully examined. Glass windows have cracks in wooden windows. They must be replaced as they are a source of heat loss.
  1. Grooves are prepared for the sealing strip. They should be free of old tape, dirt and paint.
  1. Before the start of work, they are determined with the places from which cold air comes from the street. They are insulated first. Weak points are sashes, slopes, windowsill.

Insulation with adhesive tape

Insulation technology is not very complex. First of all, you must follow the sequence of work.

  1. Plastic windows

Warming is performed in the following sequence:

  • the previously removed old insulation is used, firstly, to purchase a similar material, and secondly, for preliminary cutting to the size of the old material.
  • gluing starts from the top of the window. As you progress, the protective layer is removed in small sections, and the tape is pressed tightly.

More details in our video:

Important!

1. The adhesive tape should not have many breaks.

2. In the corners, the tape is not cut, but wrapped.

  1. Wooden windows

For these windows, in addition to adhesive tape, thin foam rubber is often used. The work is performed in the following sequence:

  • strips of foam rubber are cut along the window opening;
  • cut foam rubber is placed between the frames;
  • the tape is cut to the size of the window;
  • with a sticky layer, the tape is applied to the foam rubber and smoothed with a napkin.

Such insulation will last up to three years. But it is better to do as shown in the video:

Insulation with sealing tape

  1. Plastic windows

Usually, plastic windows lose heat for two reasons:

  • breakage of fittings;
  • wear of the seal.

Correct installation of the tape increases the insulating capacity of the window The following sequence of work is recommended:

  • before installation, the tape is kept at a positive temperature, since it depends on its expansion inside the groove;
  • the tape is cut to fit the window. The joints are cut at right angles. For thermal expansion, a stock is created: for each meter 1 centimeter of material;
  • the tape is pressed into the groove with a spatula, and the adhesive strips are removed in small sections.

Important!

1. In the corners of the frame, the tape is joined only butt.

2. To prevent impregnation from coming out, the tape does not shrink more than the allowable value.

After mounting the sealing strip, the locking mechanism is adjusted: the clamp is changed by pins, which are located at the end of the sash.

Adjustment is made with a hex wrench. The pressure increases when the trunnion head is installed in a horizontal position.

  1. Wooden windows

The Swedish method of insulating such windows using the EuroStrip technology is in great demand. It has the following advantages:

  • there is no need for annual window insulation;
  • after airing, the tightness of the windows is not disturbed;
  • the service life of the frames increases;
  • high degree of protection against dust and street noise.

For insulation, two types of tapes are used: rubber and silicone.

By the way, branded Swedish silicone seals are easily inserted into the groove and serve up to 20 years.

Installation is carried out in the following sequence:

  • the sashes are removed from the hinges and examined. Rotten areas are identified, and then restored;

So, both types of tapes for window insulation deserve attention. Which one is better depends on the state of the window.

If you choose the right one, the insulation will quickly pay off, and the apartment will always be warm and cozy.
