Wood shredder: features of the shredder and ways to do it yourself. How to make a wood chopper with your own hands Wood shavings chopper

Very often, gardeners and utilities face the question of disposal of household waste in the form of various shrubs, twigs and tree trunks. If large wood waste can be sawn and used in wood-burning stoves, then other tree residues are simply thrown away or burned. With the tightening of environmental requirements, this type of disposal began to give rise to a lot of questions from the relevant government services, which began to impose penalties on the culprits. The appearance on the market of mechanisms, branch shredders, made it possible to solve all these issues.

Disposal of wood waste by mechanical means

The process involves guiding cut tree trunks and branches through the nozzle of a branch chipper equipped with a disc or rotor with knives. The result is wood pulp (mulch).

The advantages of this type of wood waste treatment:

  • The legality of this disposal method. Disposal of this type of waste into garbage containers not approved by utilities and dumping in the wrong place may result in a fine. Waste burning is also prohibited.
  • Getting an excellent fertilizer. For the individual gardener, it is an unacceptable generosity to take out biological waste from the garden. Thereby draining your land.

The use of artificial fertilizers is not as effective as natural ingredients. By using a wood waste chipper, it is possible to obtain excellent component of compost fertilizer... Beds and garden paths are sprinkled with crushed sawdust.

The business has also learned to profit from shredding waste in the form of shrubs, twigs and other plant components, obtaining various compositions of organic fertilizers.

The disadvantages include the price for a crushing apparatus for crushing waste from tree processing. Although it is worth noting that due to the savings on fertilizer, it is possible to recoup the cost of a wood shredder, not to mention the business projects for the sale of fertilizer additives.

Types of crushers for crushing branches and branches

There are two main, most commonly used wood chipper mechanisms:

  • autonomous (gasoline or diesel);
  • electric.

The advantages of a combustible fuel grinder include the autonomy of production. With fuel available it will work at any distance from power supplies, which is of great importance for work in large areas and away from electrified settlements.

Gasoline chippers are more powerful and can handle a volume of about 70 mm.

The disadvantage is noise and exhaust of toxic substances. Although modern technology minimizes these problems. The more complex maintenance is also worth noting.

Electric grinding allows you to work with much less noise than gasoline. There are no harmful emissions. Moreover, it is much lighter in weight.

The price of electric models of the chopper is lower than the gasoline ones, as well as the power. But the trunks of trees about 40 mm are quite within the teeth of an electric grinder.

The main disadvantage is attachment to the food source. Power outages and lack of voltage make it useless to use the electric model of the shredder.

Types of knives used in wood chippers

For grinder motors cutting mechanisms are of great importance devices. There are three types of knives:

Power of crushing mechanisms for shredding branches

Unit power - important component in processing branches. In addition to the thickness of the shredded branches, the volume of processing and the duration of the continuous operation of the shredder depend on this.

Not all consumers need powerful mechanisms of branch shredders, therefore the manufacturer distinguishes devices according to various groups of purpose:

  • non-professional (amateur;
  • semi-professional;
  • professional.

Non-professional wood chipper models do not have a lot of power(around 1.6 kW). Able to chop branches up to 30 mm. Powered by electric motors. They may well serve a garden plot with new plantings.

Models of the second level have a power of 2.6 kW. They can be gasoline and electric. Cope with branches up to 40 mm.

Professional crushers are characterized by increased power up to 8 kW. Equipment weight up to 100 kg. They run on gasoline engines. Allows to chop branches up to 75 mm.

What should be guided by when choosing a shredder of branches?

For the hobby gardener, there is no need to purchase a professional shredder. With a constant power supply just buy a simple model shredder of branches.

In the presence of old plantations of shrubs that are planned to be cut down, it is advisable to purchase more powerful models of crushers.

For utilities and entrepreneurs, professional models of shredders are suitable.

In addition to power and power sources, attention should be paid to the design of the chopper knives. Since different devices of the cutting planes allow you to get shredded wood waste of different sizes, such as fine sawdust and small chips.

Additional features of crushers

Household models of branch shredders, in addition to crushing branches, small tree trunks, can shred other organic waste: grass, wood chips, various plants. This is especially true after the end of the harvest of horticultural crops: tomatoes, cucumbers, etc. Processed and used seedlings are excellent components for compost and maintenance of garden beds.

What to look for when working on a branch shredder?

All mechanisms of this type require special care and proper use in accordance with the documentation. The main thing that you definitely need to pay special attention to so as not to spoil the mechanism:

  • the items to be disposed of must be no more than the volume to be processed provided for by the instructions of the shredder;
  • prevent stones, plastic, fabric, glass, etc. from entering the receiving funnel;
  • do not process shrubs, roots with soil on the root system;
  • for the least wear on the shredder, it is preferable to handle fresh wood waste.

Safety requirements when working on a shredder

All work on crushing branches and branches must be carried out in goggles or a mask. Depending on the power of the branch chopper, chips can fly, so it is advisable to completely cover your face and head.

Gloves on the hands should be tight-fitting and not slip off the hands. You must dress so that parts of clothing cannot get into the mechanism of the shredder of branches. Do not correct a jammed object while the engine is running.

The branch shredder is a necessary tool in the household. The price of simple models allows almost everyone to purchase it. At present, it is being widely introduced into all private households. And only the lack of information about its advantages does not allow its use everywhere.

It is possible to predict that in the near future, the shredder will become an indispensable piece of garden tools any farm.

Ecology of consumption. Farmstead: After cutting or building fruit trees, there are a lot of unnecessary branches, boards and lumber. Especially for such cases, a wood shredder was invented. The new device is quite expensive, but, fortunately, making a wood chopper with your own hands is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance.

Each owner of his own plot, whether it be a country house or a small dacha with a vegetable garden, knows that it is sometimes very difficult to maintain order on it. The problem of garbage disposal in the private sector is especially acute, and if organic matter can be stored in a compost pit, and plastic and bottles can be taken to a landfill, then what about the abundance of wood litter? After cutting or building fruit trees, there are a lot of unnecessary branches, planks and lumber. There is no point in leaving them for firewood, but burning them is very long and troublesome. Especially for such cases, a wood shredder was invented. The new device is quite expensive, but, fortunately, making a wood chopper with your own hands is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance.

Purpose and principle of operation

The wood chipper will become an irreplaceable assistant for any summer resident. With him, you no longer need to make fires in order to burn sawed-off tree branches or think about where to put waste after harvesting - stems, tops, roots, etc. The machine will process any organic solid waste into chips and shavings, which will later serve as an excellent material for high-quality compost or fuel for solid fuel boilers. So, in one fell swoop you will solve several problems: disposal of garbage, saving space and time, you will get an endless source of material for fertilizers and a supply of fuel for the winter.

Whatever one may say, a wood chipper is very useful on the farm, but factory mechanisms are prohibitively expensive, so we suggest saving money and making it yourself. The most encouraging thing is that there is no need to "reinvent the wheel" - you just need to correctly repeat the design of the factory device using the available parts.

But before starting work, it is necessary to thoroughly study and understand the principle of the machine. Otherwise, you will not be able to make the correct drawing and translate it into reality. The device of the grinder is outrageously simple - it is the engine, the shaft with cutting elements, the frame, the protective shell and the receiving compartment through which the material enters. Since such a unit will turn out to be quite heavy, it is better to install it on a two-wheel base in order to easily move around the site.

The principle of operation of the device is as follows: the motor rotates and moves the shaft by means of a chain or belt. When you insert branches or stems of plants into the receiving basket, the cutting elements cut them into small pieces that come out on the other side of the appliance. Much like a regular kitchen grinder.

Chopper device

Before choosing a scheme and purchasing the components of a future shredder, it is necessary to determine its purpose, that is, what exactly (or most often) it will grind - thick branches of fruit trees, small boards or plant residues after harvest. The power of the device, the type of its operation and, accordingly, the cost of the necessary parts depend on this.

Chopper motor

Gasoline or electric motors can be used for garden shredders. Each of them has its own peculiarities of use. For example, with a gasoline engine, large thick branches can be processed, and it is also appreciated for its mobility. A device with an electric motor, on the contrary, must always be close to a power source, but it takes up much less space than a gasoline one. It is lightweight and easy to use, but it will not cope with oversized objects due to its low power.

What to look for when choosing a garden shredder motor:

  • power up to 1.5 kW is enough to grind branches up to 2 cm thick;
  • more powerful engines of 3-4 kW are capable of processing branches with a diameter of about 4 cm and are suitable for gardeners;
  • an engine of 6 kW and more will cope with thick branches of 10-15 cm, and it is recommended to choose them for owners of large farms and farms.

Since a homemade shredder in most cases is designed for various jobs, it is better to choose the "golden mean" for it - a 4 kW electric motor or a gasoline analogue with a capacity of 5-6 horsepower.

Chopper knives

The second important part of the shredder is the cutting elements or knives. The type and principle of operation of the mechanism, as well as the size of the recycled material, depend on their design. So, a simple disc with knives will grind only fragile branches into dust, combined structures can process thick branches and produce the same small shavings, there are also those that grind wood into chips 2-10 cm long.If you plan to use recycled material for solid fuel boilers, it is better to choose the latter option.

Since our goal is to copy one of the factory shredder models, consider the knives used to make them:

Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to make the described models of knives on your own, therefore, for self-made devices, their own cutting elements were invented: a knife-disk design, a set of circular saws and a two-shaft system with 8 knives.

Shredder drawing

To make a wood shredder, it is not enough just to buy the necessary spare parts, you need to have professional locksmith skills. The whole process takes place in three stages - creating a drawing, preparing materials and assembling the device.

Since we are not going to come up with anything new, any suitable model of a shredder can be taken as the basis of the drawing, and the rest can be added at your discretion. To create a drawing, you can use a special computer program AutoCAD.

We described the main components of the mechanism above, but this is only a general view. The most important thing to pay attention to when creating a drawing is the location of the knives and the angle of their cut. Consider the design of a shredder with a twin-shaft cutting element.

So, the shafts will be located between the plates, and each shaft will contain 3-4 knives. It is better to use bolts to secure the cutting elements, offset from the center of the shaft. The shaft rotates freely thanks to 4 bearings, which are fixed on the plates. The synchronization of the movement of the shafts is provided by 2 gears, which are driven by the motor. To transmit torque, use a belt or chain of your choice. Depending on the size of the knives and the diameter of the raw material you are going to grind, vary the gap between the shafts.

If you are using a 4 kW electric motor, the number of revolutions is 2500-2800 rpm. This figure is good for a disc mechanism designed for thin branches and stems of plants. The twin-shaft mechanism must be powerful, so the number of revolutions must be reduced.

The images below show drawings of a wood chipper with 2 shafts, each with 3 knives:

The disc model looks much simpler mainly due to the simple design of the knives.

The drawing can show the diameter of the disc, the number of knives and their location. The more knives, the finer the raw material will be at the exit. The disc can be positioned vertically or at an angle.

A stud with circular saws is attached to the frame. Often in such devices, a belt is used for the drive, therefore, two pulleys should be made on the shaft and the hairpin.

Most of the materials needed to assemble a shredder can be purchased from a car market, an agricultural equipment store or a hardware store, but some parts will have to be ordered or made by yourself. To do this, you need to be able to work with a grinder and a welding machine.

Twin Shaft Shredder

The work on creating a two-shaft shredder consists of the following phases - assembling the frame and receiving compartment, creating a chopping drum with knives, assembling the drum and engine.

Necessary materials:

  • engine;
  • plate 10 mm - 2 pcs;
  • gear - 2 pcs;
  • pulley - 1 piece;
  • shaft for knives - 2 pcs;
  • bearings with fasteners - 5 pcs;
  • knives;
  • profile pipe;
  • sheet metal (thickness 2 mm).

The first step is to make the frame. To do this, cut 4 parts from the profile pipe: 2 - 40 cm each, 2 - 80 cm each. Using the welding machine, fix the short parts between the long ones at a right angle to make a frame. The distance between the two inner crossmembers must be such that the chopping drum can fit between them.

In order to subsequently move the shredder, the wheels must be fitted to it. To do this, fix 2 racks on the frame, which will then hold the axle and wheels.

Assembly of the mechanism:

  1. When the frame is ready, the chopping drum can be assembled. To make a shaft, take a square blank for 4 knives or a round blank for 3 knives.
  2. For a square workpiece, grind the ends round to fit into the bearings. If you are using a round stock, sharpen the center by making 3 flat cuts to set the knives.
  3. The knives themselves can be easily made from Kamaz springs. Cut off the desired piece of the spring, level it if necessary by heating it in a furnace and hitting it several times with a hammer. Heat up the part and let cool.
  4. Make holes for the bolts in the knives.
  5. Sharpen the knives on the machine, choosing a cutting edge angle of 35-45 °.
  6. Place the knives on the shaft and mark the attachment points. Drill holes at the marked points and make threads in them.
  7. To make a chopping drum, take two plates - these will be the walls. Using a welding machine, cut out holes for the bearings in them and grind the edges. If it is not possible to do this stage yourself, you can contact a locksmith or an enterprise.
  8. Install the bearings inside.
  9. Bolt the pads to the metal walls.
  10. Insert the shafts into the bearings and fasten them.
  11. Connect the walls with threaded metal pins and fix them with nuts.
  12. It remains only to make a receiving compartment through which the wood will get inside. To do this, take sheet metal and make 4 identical parallelepiped blanks.
  13. Find the narrowest side of each piece, step 5 cm away from it and fold the edge.
  14. Bend the remaining three blanks in the opposite direction.
  15. Assemble the box and make sure the pieces fit snugly together.
  16. Join the edges with welding or self-tightening rivets.
  17. At the base on the folded sides, drill the places for the fasteners.

Disc shredder

Compared to a twin-shaft shredder, a disc shredder requires much less parts, time and effort to assemble.

Necessary materials:

  • motor;
  • knives;
  • profile pipe;
  • metal sheet to create a disc;
  • sheet metal 2 mm thick for the protective carapace and the receiving compartment.

Such a small number of parts is due to the low power of the apparatus. If the twin-shaft mechanism can grind thick branches with a diameter of up to 10 cm into chips, this one will cope with a maximum of 2 cm. Knives can be made as described in the instructions above.

Progress:

As you can see, nothing complicated, the main thing is to acquire all the necessary details. The homemade dual-shaft wood chipper has a lot of power and is designed for processing large branches. Chip sizes can be controlled from 2 cm to 8 cm depending on the number of knives per shaft. published by

You can use old branches from bushes and trees on your personal plot as compost, so do not rush to get rid of them by burning or throwing them into a landfill. And in order to accelerate the decay of the branches, you need to cut them finely with a chopper. The video below shows how to make this garden appliance with your own hands. There are also factory-made devices, however, they are expensive, and if you want to save money, you can make a chopper yourself from available tools.

There are the following types of wood chippers, which differ in the type of engine:

  1. petrol;
  2. electric.

Also, these devices are usually divided into:

  • industrial;
  • household.

The higher the power of the main unit, the more efficiently the work on processing wood into sawdust is carried out. Gasoline appliances are preferable due to their high power, however, in cases where it is necessary to make the device with your own hands, it will not be easy to get such an engine. You will need to find a two-stroke internal combustion engine, for example, from an old motor cultivator.

In fact, any such garden appliance is based on such components as:

  • engine;
  • a funnel-shaped receiver that is welded from steel;
  • mechanism in the form of a belt, gear transmission;
  • cutting tool - this can be a milling cutter or a saw blade;
  • outlet box or collection device.

If everything is clear with the engine, then about the receiver and the transmission mechanism it is necessary to give more clarification. The branches will begin to be fed for processing in a special funnel, in which, after passing through the saw unit, they will become dust. Thus, this receiver must be funnel-shaped at the entrance to concentrate all the available power of the engine and cutting parts in a limited area. It also makes it easier to feed material for recycling, which often comes in different shapes, and saves your hands.

The cutting unit must be approached with a great deal of enthusiasm. The fact is that many factory-made crushers have milling or milling-turbine knives, and it is difficult for a DIYer to find them. It is much easier to do otherwise: take a pair of circular saws with a diameter of about 20 cm, and with the help of spacer washers on a steel shaft, assemble the milling cutter with your own hands.

Any device is brought into working position by transferring the mechanical energy of the motor shaft to the crushing units. This mechanism can be of 3 varieties:

  • belt;
  • chain;
  • gearbox.

The output during crushing is carried out in a box with a length of at least 20 cm. Thus, the sawdust is stacked compactly and neatly, and does not scatter around the crusher.

Preparatory stage

In this case, it is necessary to calculate the required metal products and small standard parts, the total number of required metal. The drawing should include the locations of the holes for attaching the chopping drum, power unit, and drive belt tensioners. Mark the area where the support legs with wheels are located.

In order for the finished shredder to be stable during operation, regardless of the size of the branches to be shredded, before starting manufacturing with your own hands, you need to provide for the dimensions of the unit's support platform. The drawing should also provide for which type of engine to choose. The performance of the garden appliance and operating costs will depend on this. When using the device stationary at a short distance from the house, you can use an electric motor.

Stages of assembly of the device

Stages of making the device necessary for the garden with your own hands:

  1. Assembling the frame

The frame of such a garden appliance is made of metal profiles with dimensions of approximately 50 to 50 mm. To do this, you need to cut off 4 workpieces with a grinder, the length of which is about 400 mm and 2 workpieces with a length of 800 mm. Then you need to weld short sections perpendicular to the ends of the long blanks so that a rectangular frame comes out. The two remaining segments should be fixed inside the frame at a distance from the extreme crossbars, which correspond to the installation dimensions of the engine and drum.

On a rectangle, at one end of the frame of our garden appliance, we attach a metal sheet of similar dimensions, 5 mm thick, by means of electric welding. It is necessary to cut elongated holes in the sheet at a distance and with the same diameter as the motor mounting parameters. We weld 4 legs to the corners of the frame, the height of which is 50 cm. They must be tied together at the bottom with a 20x20 mm profile by welding.

  1. Installing the engine

To make the tool made with optimal power, we install an electric motor with a power of 5 kW on it, which is bolted to the elongated mounting holes of the plate. Thus, they will facilitate easy movement of the power tool while tensioning the cutterbar drive belt.

The tensioning mechanism is based on a corner welded across the structure at the end of the frame and 2 tension bolts. At the two ends of the corner, we drill holes in the diameter of the tension bolts, which are inserted into these slots with one end, and are attached with the other, by means of small corners, to the near engine mounting bolts. The process of tensioning or loosening the belt will be carried out by tightening or unscrewing the nuts on the bolts, from the outside of the edge of the angle of the tensioning mechanism.

  1. Production and attachment of the chopping drum

The shredding drum of the unit is installed at the end of the frame opposite to the engine. The drum is made from a piece of steel pipe, the length of which is approximately 40 cm, and the diameter is 30 cm. We weld plates to the ends of the cylinder, we drill holes in them in order to install the shaft on the bearings. At the top and bottom of the cylinder, we cut rectangular windows for loading material with dimensions of 100 by 15 mm and for exiting the crushed mass of 20x30 mm.

We weld 4 legs to the lower window of the drum in order to attach it to the frame. On the support legs of the drum and on the frame, we make holes with a diameter that corresponds to the dimensions of the fastening bolts. We attach the knives to the steel shaft of the grinder to 2 discs, which are welded at the ends of the shaft and corresponding to the diameter of the drum.

We make them from old knives of shredders of an agricultural appliance. We cut them with a length a little more (3-4 cm) of the distance to the disks. Before fastening, we bend the ends of the knives and make 2 holes in them on each side. You can also use ordinary circular saws that are available at any hardware store. We drill such holes on the installation discs. We install 3 knives on the shaft and fix them with bolts.

We insert the shaft into the holes in the end of the casing, put bearings with support caps on the ends of the shaft. We fasten the covers to the casing with bolts. The second method of making a chopping drum is that we put about 9 circular saws on a special axis, the rotation of which is carried out by means of intermediate shaft bearings from a VAZ machine.

An important point: it is necessary that there is a small distance between the circular saws, since if they are installed close to each other, the teeth of adjacent saws can snag and the efficiency of the device is reduced.

Finally, we attach the pulleys to the protruding ends of the drum and motor shafts. Rotation from the engine will be transmitted through a belt drive. For the convenience of loading branches and your safety while working with the shredder, we weld a loading hopper to the upper window of the drum, which is made of metal with a thickness of 2 mm. The height of the hopper should be about 40 cm, the size of the upper part is 30 by 40 cm. The outlet window is equal to the receiving one, which is located on the drum body. We attach an outlet bell to it, the length of which is approximately 20 centimeters. Thus, we managed to make a garden appliance with our own hands, which will help us to obtain sawdust from ordinary wood.

Storing branches from small bushes and trees is a problem that most gardeners and summer residents face after winter cleaning. Wood chipper is a technology designed to solve the problem of wood waste. With this device, you can quickly turn large branches into small chips and use them as compost.

general characteristics

There are many signs by which one can classify shredders, but the main ones are:

  • Engine's type.
  • Appointment.

A wood waste shredder by engine type is:

  • Electric.
  • Gasoline.

According to their intended purpose, crushers are:

  • Household.
  • Industrial.

The gasoline engine has a higher performance (it makes the chips much thinner), but making such a device with your own hands is not easy enough, since you will have to find a two-contact type internal combustion engine. In addition, such devices are harmful to the environment due to the release of gasoline residues.

As for the electric engine, such devices are less powerful and are great for small summer cottages. Such a shredder can be easily made with your own hands from almost improvised means.

A standard wood chip crusher consists of the following:

  • Engine.
  • Knives are cutting devices. They can be of two types: cutters or saw blade.
  • Gear or belt drive.
  • Funnel-shaped receiver, preferably made of steel.
  • A collection device, it can be replaced with an outlet box.

Something to clarify about the receiver. Branches will be fed into the funnel, which after passing through the saws will become small chips.

The receiving mechanism must necessarily have the form of a funnel. This is done so that the engine can concentrate the saw power in a limited area.

To make a cutting module with your own hands, you have to turn on your imagination. Shop crushers usually have milling knives. Finding such elements at home can be quite difficult, so you will have to make a cutter with your own hands. For this, several 20 (in diameter) saws are taken and a steel shaft, on which the saws are assembled with the help of spacer washers.

No grinding device can work without a transmission mechanism, which is of three types:

  1. Gearbox.
  2. Chain.
  3. Belt.

There is no particular difference between them, therefore, making a device with their own hands, everyone chooses based on their capabilities and desires. It is worth noting only that the most simple to perform is the belt mechanism.

Preparation

Drawings are the main element, without which not a single stage of assembling the grinder with your own hands can do. The exact dimensions of the length and width of the structure should be noted here.

In addition to the dimensions of the device, the following should be noted:

  • Calculate the amount of materials for manufacturing.
  • Describe the drawings of the structure itself, in particular, mark the locations of the holes for fastening the body and other component parts.
  • Mark the area where the support legs with wheels will be located.
  • The type of engine used. The choice should depend on the needs of the owner.

An important detail that many people forget about is the support area. It is needed so that the device is stable during operation. In the drawings, it is necessary to indicate the dimensions of the site.

DIY chopper

Do-it-yourself assembly of a standard apparatus consists of three main stages:

  • Assembly of the body (frame).
  • Engine mounting.
  • Chopping drum attachment.

Let's start in order.

Frame

The frame for the grinder is made of a metal profile with a size of 50 by 50 mm.

For this:

  1. We cut off 4 blanks with a grinder. The first two are 400 mm. length, and the second - 800 mm.
  2. We weld on 400 mm. cuts to the ends of long workpieces in such a way that a rectangular frame is obtained.
  3. The remaining blanks, there should be two of them, we fix inside the frame. The length from the outermost crossmembers should be equal to the dimensions of the engine and drum.
  4. Using welding, we attach a sheet of metal profile to the resulting square. Its thickness should be 5 mm. Holes for mounting the engine should be cut on the sheet.
  5. We install four legs in the corners of the case. Their height must be at least 50 centimeters. The lower part of the legs is connected with a 20 x 20 mm profile. by welding.

Engine mounting

For the optimal power of the device with your own hands, a 5 kW engine is enough. It must be fixed to the mounting holes with a plate. This will allow the power tool to move while tensioning the cutterbar drive belt.

A homemade tensioner is a corner welded across the body, which is attached with two tension bolts. At the 2 ends of the angle, holes must be drilled that correspond to the dimensions of the bolts for fastening. One end of the tension bolts is inserted into the slots and the other is attached to the motor mounting bolts using small corners.

Chopping drum

A homemade chopping drum is installed on the opposite side of the frame from the engine. The mechanism itself is made from a piece of steel pipe, 45 centimeters long and 35 centimeters in diameter.

Making a drum and mounting a drum:

  1. A plate must be welded to the end of the cylinder. In it, we first make holes on which the shaft will be attached in the future.
  2. On both sides of the cylinder (bottom and top), cut out rectangular windows for loading wood materials. Approximate size 100 x 20 mm. It is also necessary to make holes for the exit of chips. Their size is 30 x 40 mm.
  3. Four legs should be attached to the lower window, which will serve as the fastening of the mechanism to the frame. We create holes on the legs and body, the dimensions of which are equal to the bolts for fastening.
  4. The chopping knives are mounted on two discs welded to the end of the shaft.
  5. A homemade cutting mechanism can be made using knives from old chopping devices, we use a length of no more than 4 centimeters.
  6. Before fixing the knives, their ends must be bent and two holes made on each side.
  7. We mount the shaft in the holes made in the end of the casing. We put on bearings on the ends of the shaft, on which there are support covers. They are bolted to the casing.
  8. We attach pulleys to the protruding ends of the shaft.

If everything is done correctly, then you can make a device with your own hands that will save a lot of time for cleaning the suburban area.

Video - a lecture on how to make a branch crusher with your own hands.

Today, special devices such as crushers are used in recycling industrial facilities. With their help, materials are crushed into particles of a certain fraction.

Also, such crushers are widely used in woodworking enterprises and in other areas. The wood chipper is used for shredding wood waste. (Read the article on how to make a wood chipper with your own hands).

Such installations are used to prepare material for production or waste disposal. This is a mandatory process, since wood is a long-term rotting waste.

Of course, you can also take out waste in an unprocessed form. But, given the presence of such attitudes, this is an irrational solution to the problem. The fact is that shredded wood decays much faster. In addition, much more waste can be removed at one time than with whole pieces.

Principle of operation

The wood chipper has various designs. This depends on the capacity of the installation, the scope of application and functionality.

So, a mulcher is a special device that is installed on a power vehicle, for example, a tractor. The device is a frame in which knives are placed for chopping branches and small trees.

In addition, there are other types of crushers that are used not only in industry, but also in everyday life. The principle of their work is that wood is chopped to a certain level.

In installations used in industrial facilities, the grinding level can be set independently. As for garden shredders, they basically work in the same mode.

Garden shredders have a fairly simple design and are easy to use. They are an indispensable helper on the personal plot. But, the main thing is that they can be easily made by hand.

There is a wide range of machines used for crushing wood on the market today.

Each model has certain technical characteristics that you should pay attention to when choosing a device:

  1. Installation power. The main indicator of the unit is performance. This parameter mainly depends on the power of the power plants.
  2. Purpose of the unit. Some shredders are used to crush small branches, boards and grass. Others are used for shredding logs, thick branches and other wood waste.
  3. Type of fuel. Wood chippers can run on both electricity and combustible fuels such as gasoline or diesel.
  4. Installation mobility. Shredders, depending on their size and functionality, are stationary and mobile. The second type of devices is mainly used in everyday life, while stationary devices are used in industrial facilities where large volumes of work are envisaged.
  5. Functionality. In professional crushers, it is possible to adjust the crushing level. As for the crushing machines used in everyday life, they have a simple design, in which there is no provision for changing the crushing mode.

Specialist's note: when choosing a crusher for a tree, it is worth considering that the power directly affects its size. Thus, installations with high productivity are bulky in size.

Simple garden shredder device

Garden shredders are an indispensable tool for your home and garden.

In the process of caring for the site, wood waste will appear, for storage of which you will need free space.

Garden crushers solve this problem in just a few minutes. With their help, you can quickly chop branches and small boards, which will facilitate their further removal. Chips can be easily bagged or composted.

Such crushers have a rather simple design and are very easy to operate. They mainly consist of the following elements:

  • motor;
  • the working shaft on which the knives are located;
  • metal frame;
  • protective cover;
  • receiving box.

To facilitate transportation, the unit is mounted on a two-wheel base. The principle of operation is that the torque is transmitted through a chain or belt to the working shaft. Wood waste or firewood is fed into the receiving box, where it is crushed.

Such a unit can be easily built with your own hands. You just need to develop a drawing of the installation and purchase parts.
