I have been engaged in the manufacture of knives for several years, and always use 2.5 x 60 cm in its business and 10 x 90 cm. Ribbon grinding machines. For a long time I wanted to buy another one, with a tape width of 5 cm, as it would simplify my work. Since such a purchase would be an invoice, I decided to make it myself.

Problems in the design of the future machine:
It was necessary to overcome three limitations. First, at the place there was no ribbon 10 cm wide, it could be ordered only on the Internet. Secondly, there was a problem with rollers. I was looking for, but I could not find the ribbon suitable for 10 cm. Thirdly, the motor. For a ribbon grinding machine, a rather powerful electric motor is needed, and I did not want to spend too much to spend on this project. The best option for me was the use of used motor.

Design problems solving:
The first problem with the ribbon found a simple solution. Since the belt 20 x 90 cm was located in a free sale in construction stores at a balanced price, I could do two 10 cm from it. This imposed restrictions on the size of my machine, but due to pricing efficiency, this option was the best. The second problem was solved using a lathe. For this, I looked at the video on the Internet, and I realized that I could make the rollers you need. With the motor, the task has been more comprehensive. In the garage I lay several electric motors, but for some reason I had to refuse them. Finally, I stopped my choice on the old cutting machine for cutting the tile, in which a 6-ampered electric motor was installed. At that time I realized that this power could be not enough. But since the work was at the stage of the experiment, I decided to first achieve the working version of the machine, and the motor can be replaced later. In fact, for a small work, the motor is suitable. But if you are going to produce more intensive grinding on it, I would recommend a 12-ampered minimum.

Electromotor for machine

I had a choice of several engines, but the electric motor that stood on a tile cutting machine was a more suitable cover. To some extent, work on the machine was like an experiment, because I was not confident in sufficient motor power. Therefore, I stopped on a modular solution with a frame for a ribbon mechanism as a single element that can be removed and rearranged on a more powerful foundation. The speed of rotation of the motor quite satisfied me, but bothered that 6 and give weak power. After a small test, I saw that for simple work this electric motor approached, but for more intensive work, you need to choose something more powerful. When designing your machine, pay attention to this moment.

As I mentioned, the casing at the electric motor was very suitable, as it allowed to create a vertical machine that will easily move.

First you need to free it up, removing the desktop, saw, protection, pallet for water, leaving only the electric motor. Another advantage of using this motor was a threaded core and a nut for fixing the saw, which made it possible to install the pulley without using the key (what is a key, I will explain later).

Since I had too wide pulley in stock, I decided to use large clamping washers that usually fasten the saw by turning one back side so that a wedge-shaped wedge is. I found that the space between them is too narrow, and to expand it, put the lock washer between them. The advantage in this method is that the clamping washers have a flat edge, which is fixed with a flat edge for simultaneous rotation with the core.

Belt

I used the drive belt 7 x 500 mm. You can use a standard 12 mm, but thin more flexible, and it will load the motor less. He does not need to rotate the grinding wheel.

Construction of a ribbon grinder

The device is simple. The electric motor drives the belt that rotates the "main" pulley of 10 x 5 cm, which leads to the movement of abrasive tape. Another pulley of 8 x 5 cm is located 40 cm above the main and 15 cm at the back and fastened on the bearing. The third 8 x 5 cm pulley rotates on the lever, and acts as a tensioning roller, tightly holding the abrasive ribbon. On the other side, the spruce lever is attached to the frame.

Determining the type of drive

The main issue was to rotate the main pulley directly by the electric motor or using an additional pulley and drive belt. First of all, I chose a belt transmission because I wanted to have the opportunity to replace the engine to more powerful, however, there was another reason. When you produce intensive metal processing, there is a risk to face some problems. The belt transmission in such cases will slip, while the direct drive will create big problems. With a belt, the device will be safer.

Making frame and its installation

It is important to mention that the use of a metal corner as a frame may have both advantages and disadvantages. An obvious advantage is that it is convenient to collect, as a designer in childhood. But the main drawback is strong only in two directions, but weak when twisting. So, it is necessary to take into account this weakness and calculate what torque can be transmitted from pulleys to the frame, and compensate it with additional jumpers.

Cut:
For cutting corner, you can use the hacksaw, but the angular grinding machine with a cutting disk will make it faster. After cut off all the elements, I would recommend to stick all their sharp edges so as not to cut during the assembly. Holes can be drilled using a conventional drill and a lubricating and coolant.

Main roller

The main roller is the most important detail of the project, as it gets a torque from the motor and transmits it to the tape. I used the old sleeve for its attachment, but I recommend using the bearing instead. The bushings cope with their task, but they are constantly overheated and require regular lubrication. Moreover, they can scatter dirty lubricant, which is annoying during operation.

Shaft:
On the side of the shaft there is a carving with a different direction so that the fastening bolts are not unscrewed during rotation. If you doitate one side with a carvings, as I did, leave the one that comes counterclockwise, otherwise you will have to make a touch bolt (I will describe how to do it later) and pin. The main pulley will be put on the cropped edge.

Pulley:
Continuing the topic of reuse, I found my old pulley from another project. Unfortunately, I prepared it under the threaded pin, on which he had to keep, but, in fact, this is not a problem. In this pulley, I made a rectangular cutout. Then, with the help of an angular grinding, I cut the groove at the end of the shaft. Having placing the key in the hole formed by the groove of the shaft and the rectangular neckline cut, I reliably recorded them relative to each other.

Making rollers for grinding machine

I made rollers from several segments of solid rocks with a thickness of 2.5 cm. But you can use MDF, Paneur or other material. When laying the layers, it is necessary to do so that the fibers are perpendicular to, it will give the rollers additional strength and layers will not split.

It is necessary to make three rollers: main roller, upper roller and tensioning roller. The main roller is made of two 13 x 13 cm of pieces with a thickness of 2.5 cm. Upper and tensioning rollers from two pieces of wood with a size of 10 x 10 cm.

Process:
Start from gluing a pair of 13 cm and 10 cm pieces of wood, closing them with clamps. After drying the glue, cut the corners with the help of a tracing saw, then find the center of each part. Secure them in the lathe and process until their dimensions become 5 x 10 cm and 5 x 8 cm.

Upper and tensioning rollers:
Next, you need to install bearings in rollers with a size of 5 x 8 cm. Select a crown or first drill, and drill the recess to the bearing width. The internal bearing ring should rotate freely, so you need to drill a hole passing through the roller through the inner ring of the bearing. This will allow the bolt to pass through with the minimum hole.

Main Roller:
This item is done a little differently. There are no bearings on it, however, if the shaft leaves the roller less than 5 cm, you will need to run the roller in width. Measure the diameter of the shaft and in the center of the roller you need to drill the same hole. Try inserting the shaft, it should hold hard, otherwise the roller will shake.

Basin bonded bolt

Further, two halves should be copped with bolts, you should not rely only on glue. Remember that the heads of the bolts need to be dried in a tree, as the roller rotates in close proximity to the frame.

Tension lever

The lever is made of a metal plate with a size of 10 x 30 x 200 mm with rounded edges. It is necessary to drill quite large holes in it, so I recommend using a drilling machine and a lot of lubrication for this. Most need 4 holes. The first at the point of rotation. It is not in the center of the plank, but by 8 cm from its edge. The second hole will be on the edge, close to the point of rotation. It will serve for fastening the spring. Two additional holes need to be drilled at the opposite end, approximately 5 cm from each other. They should be slightly wider in diameter, as they will be used to configure, which I will tell further.

When all the holes are made, you can fix the shoulder at a vertical corner between the top roller and the basis. The end on which the spring will be attached towards the main roller. He must rotate freely, so I recommend using two nuts for fastening, the main twisting is not completely, and the second is used as a lock nut.

Installation of rollers

The top roller is fixed static, and should be clearly located in the same plane along with the tension roller and the main roller. You can do everything on the eye, but I recommend it all to check the level. You can add a washer for aligning the roller, or if it is not enough - the bolt. They are inserted between the frame and roller.

No need to fully install a tensioner roller. You need to still make a stabilizing device.

Stabilization of ribbon

Wearings for rollers or uneven surfaces can lead to the fact that during operation the abrasive tape will gradually go with them. A stabilizing device is a device on a tensioning roller, which allows it to be at an angle that ensures the retention of the abrasive tape in the center. Its device is much easier than it looks, and consists of a fixing bolt, a bit of the free stroke of the tensioner and an adjusting bolt.

Drilling holes in bolts:
For this purpose, I made a device, in the form of a wedge-shaped cutout in a board, which will help at the time of drilling to hold the bolt in place. You can do this and manually, but I do not recommend.

Fixing bolt.

A fixing bolt is a simple bolt with a hole drilled in it, and which is installed on the bar through a wide hole, which is closer to the point of rotation of the lever. Since it is located between the lever and the roller, its head needs to be drowning so that it does not pin it. The bolt must be fixed as shown in the figure.

It needs to relax a bit so that the tension roller has a small backlash. But so that it does not spin, you need to make a crown nut. To do this, you just need to make cuts on the edges of the usual nut so that it looks like a crown. In the bolt itself there will be two drilled holes: one for an adjusting bolt, and it will be aligned with a hole with a locking bolt, and another for fixing the crown nut with a pin.

Bolt for setting:
After the tensioning roller is put in its place, you can install a regulating bolt that will pass through the holes of the locking bolt and the bolt on which the tension roller rotates. The system works when you delay the adjusting bolt, forcing the axis of rotation of the tensioning roller to shift the angle of rotation outward, thus forcing the tape tends to the mechanism. Spring from the other end of the lever adjusts the tension in the opposite direction. I recommend consuming the adjusting bolt with locknut, as vibrations can weaken it.

Note: You can add a spring from the back of the tensioning roller, but I did not find the reasons why it should be done. A small advantage will be that thus the roller will have a smaller backlash. But I will add that I did not do this, and I did not have any problems.

Completion of the work on the manufacture of the machine with your own hands

When everything is done, you need to check all the bolts again, and make sure that the stabilization mechanism is assembled correctly. Then you need to turn on the device for the first time, which may be scary. As if you drive a car, where the steering wheel and transmission do not work. I recommend to turn on and off the motor at a very short time so that the machine does not rotate on the full power.

In fact, for me the most difficult part turned out to be a springs. If it is tenting too much, the tape will not be able to rotate ... too weak - and it is impossible to keep it, it flies that in itself dangerous.
