We sew roller blinds with our own hands: step-by-step instructions and color selection for the living room. DIY roller blinds step by step instructions on how to sew roller blinds

Due to the ergonomics and diverse design, roller blinds or, as they are also called roller blinds and roller blinds, are only becoming more popular every year. The production of roller shutters today is very profitable and the market does not lack their assortment, but you can create your own unique interior only by adding handmade elements to it, for example, making roller blinds for plastic windows with your own hands. Of course, they will resemble the roller blinds offered to us on the market, only with a lifting structure and conciseness, but they will inevitably become the highlight of the whole situation in the room.

Sewing such curtains does not require large financial costs and time, and even a novice craftswoman will be able to cope with it.

The choice of textiles for the manufacture of roller blinds with your own hands according to the step-by-step instructions below is unlimited. On sale you can find fabrics designed specifically for window curtains of this type: thick and transparent, plain and printed, smooth and embossed, as well as new-generation blackout and screen opaque materials that provide complete shading in the room. They are ideal for the bedroom, and if you plan to update the curtains in the bathroom, give preference to water-repellent fabric. Before sewing roller blinds from such materials, do not forget to study the recommendations for caring for them: is washing acceptable, if so, at what temperature, etc.

If you wish, you can also make roller shutters yourself from ordinary curtain or cotton fabrics. They do not have high antistatic and dirt-repellent properties, but they are much cheaper. Moreover, the master class that we offer does not oblige you to choose only special materials for roller shutters. For curtains made according to it step by step, you can choose any textile fabric suitable for the realization of your design ideas: curtain fabric, satin, chintz, poplin, linen, cotton. The main condition is that the fabrics for the front and back sides must be of the same texture and not shed. Otherwise, when washing, they will shrink differently, the curtain will warp and lose its attractiveness.

How to make roller blinds with your own hands in a couple of hours: step by step instructions

To make roller blinds with your own hands, a minimum amount of fabric is required and at the same time a beautiful, stylish and most functional product is obtained. Such a curtain can close not only a window, but also a glass door or use it as an original door for a small cabinet.

In order to sew roller blinds with our own hands, we need:

  • sewing machine;
  • two pieces of the same type, but different in design fabric;
  • two wooden bars about 2 and 1 cm wide and equal to the width of the finished curtain;
  • five ring screws.;
  • three screws-hooks;
  • screwdriver;
  • cord, braid or tape for raising and lowering the curtains;
  • scissors, centimeter, thread, pencil.

Our roller blind will be mounted on the window opening. When unfolded, it should extend 10-12 cm beyond its borders in width, and go down to the window sill in length. Based on this, we make measurements. To the results obtained, we add 3 cm to the width for allowances for the side seams and 10 cm to the length, given that we will fix the curtain at a height of 7 cm above the window.

If the roller blind is installed above the upper slope of the window opening, its size must be wider than the opening by at least 10 cm or more.

As an example, take a standard window opening 146 cm wide and 140 cm high. So you need to cut out two rectangular pieces of fabric (since you plan to sew a double curtain) 149 wide and at least 150 cm long or more. By the way, if the width of the fabric is 150 cm, it is not necessary to cut the roller blind to this extra centimeter. Just cut out a square 150x150cm. If the width of the fabric you like is less than one and a half meters, you will have to sew a curtain of 4 cuts (2 for the front side and 2 for the wrong side), and decorate the central seams with decorative tape or braid.

Step 1: Sew the Curtain

We combine the pieces of matter with the front sides and sew them from the sides and from above, stepping back from the edges by 1.5 cm. Leave the bottom edge unstitched. We turn the product on the front side, bend the bottom edge inward by 1.5 cm, sew and iron well what happened on both sides.
Now we need to sew "pockets" for the weighting and mounting straps. To do this, we decide which side of the curtain will be the front (looking into the room), and which side will be the wrong side and lay it out on a flat surface with the wrong side up. Then we bend the top edge by 3 cm, the bottom by 1.5 cm, sew and insert the strips: the one that is wider in the top pocket, and the one that is already in the bottom one.

Step 2: Screw in the ring screws

We screw ring screws into the upper (fixing) bar at a distance of 10 cm from the edges through the fabric (two above and two below them on the front side). We also screw the fifth screw from the front side, from one edge, stepping back from it at a distance of 5 cm.

Step 3: Attaching the Lift Cords

To roll the roller blind, you need cords. What they will be depends only on your imagination: an ordinary cord, nylon ribbon, decorative braid, a ribbon made of fabric in a color contrasting to the curtains. Before cutting them to the desired length, we make simple calculations. The length of the first cord is three times the length of the curtain. The length of the second cord is exactly the same plus half the length of the curtain. In our case, it will be 450 cm and 525 cm.

We pass both cords into the screw rings on the top bar and fasten as shown in the figure. In this case, a cord that has a longer length must be tied to a ring located further from a separate, fifth side screw.

Step 4: The curtain and the original lifting mechanism are ready

We lower both cords along the wrong side of our curtains, wind them through the bottom to the front side, pass through all three rings screwed on it and tie them together.

Step 5: Installing the Curtain on the Window

Before you hang our wonderful curtain, you need to screw two screw hooks over the window opening. The main thing is to screw them in so that they are located exactly opposite the upper rings fixed on the mounting plate. The same principle can be used to make not only curtains, but also blinds with your own hands.

To do this, we apply the curtain to the opening above the window and mark with a pencil the places where the hook-screws should be, screw them in and hang the curtain. On the side of the window, it is desirable to screw in another hook, for which it will be convenient to throw the cords when the curtain is raised, thereby preventing them from tangling.

Ideas with photos for inspiration

Our master class on how to do it yourself is just a guide to action. With it, you can sew curtains completely different from the previous ones. They will differ in size, design, type of lifting cords. Changing them according to mood, weather, season, you can easily and simply transform the interior every time.

Curtains Hand Made bring the warmth of human hands and a sense of comfort and tranquility into the interior.
You can fasten such curtains not only on a bar, but also on a cornice using ordinary cornice stakes, and if the width of the fabric does not allow you to sew not one wide, but several narrow curtains
Such curtains can be installed not only on the opening, but also on each sash or in a window opening. In this case, you will have to take into account that it will be possible to open the window only when the curtain is raised to the very top. or turn on your imagination and come up with your own original mount As lifting cords, you can use ordinary nylon tape Instead of screw rings, ordinary plastic rings threaded through the ribbons are sometimes used to support lifting cords.
If the window is small, you can do without a lifting mechanism, and roll up the curtain fabric manually and fix it with one tape in the center

Every housewife can create a cozy and unique atmosphere in her house or apartment. The main thing that is needed for this is the desire to create, imagination and a sense of proportion. And you can start with the simplest - change the finished curtains for those made with your own hands and according to your own design.

Functional double-glazed windows framed by PVC or wood, which have won the market, have made adjustments to the style of window design: minimalism and practicality are welcome. The combination of simplicity and artistic variety has made roller blinds a versatile product, successfully used in luxurious living rooms of rich houses, in an average kitchen or in a standard office. The functionality of the blinds is combined in them with the elegance of textiles.

Design features of roller blinds

Their other names are roller blinds, roller blinds, roll curtains (from the English roll - roll, roller, cylinder). A single piece of fabric is rolled up using mechanisms that are used in blinds. Depending on the folding method, there are several types:

  • pleated (going to "accordion");
  • Roman (folded with shuttlecocks);
  • roller blinds (wound in a roll on a tube).

Anyone can make and hang roller blinds with their own hands. Such designs

  • do not close the window and the surrounding space;
  • easily rise and fall, protecting the room from sunlight or prying eyes;
  • they stay clean longer;
  • they are easy to remove, wash and put away when not needed;
  • for their manufacture use any fabric you like;
  • Roller blinds on the window can be used as an independent type of decor, or in combination with other curtains or tulle.

How to make your own roller blinds

Depending on where the roller blinds are attached - on the wall or on the window, whether it is supposed to use a cornice or not - the mechanism for roller blinds with your own hands will be different. To raise and lower them, ribbons, cords, fishing lines or ropes are used. The simplest type is lifted by hand and fixed with ties in a certain position. In a more complex design, a system of cords is used for lifting: when they move down, the canvas moves up, wrapping itself on a weighting bar.

You can make roller blinds from any type of fabric, but it is better from a dense one, for example, linen or curtain fabric. On an industrial scale, natural, synthetic, semi-synthetic fabrics impregnated with dust-repellent and antibacterial compounds are used. If possible, you can purchase such a fabric.

Linen roller blinds

Material used for sewing roll curtains with your own hands:

For the canvas: fabric - 2 cuts (for the front and back sides). The wrong side can be made from a denser type of fabric.

For garters: ribbons or leftover fabric.

Lower weighting agent: a wooden rail or a metal tube in dimensions slightly smaller than the width of the curtain.

Upper bearing bar: wooden block with a section of 20 - 25 mm.

For fastening: stapler with staples, screwdriver, self-tapping screws.

For sewing: sewing machine, threads.

Making a roller blind with your own hands takes a little time. The simplest design (lifting by hand and fixing with decorative ties) is sewn and assembled in 2 hours.

These roller blinds are suitable for plastic windows, as they are mounted on the wall without violating the integrity of the window frame.

Advice. The upper bar can be decorated with braid, lambrequin or in another way. For the garter belt, it is not necessary to use the same fabric - it can be in a contrasting color or with a different pattern. In this case, roller blinds will perform not only utilitarian functions, but also decorate the interior.

You can make curtains that use a rope lifting mechanism. For this design, a cornice is needed. Additional purchase required

  • 2 pieces of rope: the length of one is equal to three lengths of the curtain, the length of the second is three lengths plus the width of the curtain;
  • 2 plastic rings, 2 threaded hooks for screwing into the window frame.

Roller blinds have become very popular for decorating windows in various rooms, and when you come to the store, your eyes simply run up from the abundance of goods of different colors and from different materials. How to sew roller blinds with your own hands? - this is the main question of housewives who love to needlework or those who have a limited budget. We answer - of course it is possible, and even necessary! And this does not require much effort, just patience and the necessary materials.

There are a number of advantages why many people choose roller blinds. First, it is practical and economical in terms of finances and footprint. Secondly, they are suitable for any room in any style of decoration. Thirdly, thanks to the lifting mechanism, you can adjust the level of illumination of the room. Fourthly, they are very easy to care for and will have to be done very rarely, unlike the classic long curtains. Fifthly, roller blinds on plastic windows are very easy to install using self-tapping screws or adhesive tape.

Which fabric to choose

The best fabric for any roller blinds, including roller blinds, is polyester. Such material has a special impregnation that protects against water, dust and dirt. Polyester curtains do not have to be completely removed and washed with slight contamination, it is enough to treat stains with a damp cloth. Although polyester has such positive qualities, this does not mean at all that other fabrics are not suitable for roller blinds. You can use thick cotton, linen, cambric and even burlap.

The color and pattern on the fabric should correspond to the main idea of the interior. Horizontal stripes widen the window opening, but can significantly lower ceilings. Bright flower drawings are better to be small, because a large bloated pattern can be unprofitable to focus on a modest window. If the room is exposed to too much daylight during the daytime, you can hang roller blinds made of thick fabric in dark shades. White and beige fabrics make the room bright and joyful, and let the sun's rays through well.

Necessary materials and tools

The materials that may be needed in the manufacture of Roman blinds with your own hands are very simple and uncomplicated.

  • piece of fabric
  • Centimeter flight line for measuring and cutting fabric
  • Sewing machine
  • Two wooden blocks
  • Screwdriver and screws
  • Furniture stapler
  • Ribbons and laces for fastening

Step-by-step instructions for making roller blinds

You will learn how to make roller blinds with your own hands from our article using a detailed description of the process. To begin with, we will discuss how to usually measure the height and width of the window before cutting the product. If a do-it-yourself curtain will be installed inside the window to the upper frame, then we measure the height and width of the opening. And if you decide that the canvas should be fixed on the wall above the window, then we measure it like this: we retreat 10-15 cm from the upper edge of the window, and the cornice will be fixed there. Next, we measure the length of the planned curtains, it will be 10-15 cm lower than the window sill, and the width will also protrude on the sides by 10 cm.

Before taking measurements, you need to decide in which part of the window the roller blind will hang - inside the opening or outside

With side cord

Homemade roller blinds with this type of lift are more convenient to use, but may take more time and effort to manufacture and install.

  1. Cut the fabric curtains according to the measurements of the window, you should get two identical blanks, do not forget to leave allowances for the seams.
  2. We make a pocket for the weighting rail at the bottom of the curtain and insert it. At the top, the product will be attached to a wooden bar with Velcro.
  3. Next, we sew on plastic rings on ribbons, stepping back from the top edge of about 5 cm, and from the sides 15 cm. We screw the hooks on the reverse side of the installation bar.
  4. Curtains will rise with the help of two cords threaded into the rings. The length of the first is equal to three lengths of the curtains, and the length of the second is the same plus half the length of the canvas.
  5. Tie the cords to the hooks, and pass them around the curtains through the rings. Pay attention to the photo: the longer cord must pass through two rings.
  6. Cords are fixed on the wall from the side of the longest cord. If you need to raise the roller blind, you just need to pull the threads and fix them at the desired level.

With garter belt

  1. The first step is the same as in curtains with a side cord: transfer the measurements taken to the fabric and cut out the details, they are sewn in the same way as in the first case, leaving one side unsewn.
  2. We fold the fabric face to face and sew along the edge on three sides, leaving the top edge without a seam.
  3. Turn the garment inside out and iron all seams. You have what is called a bag.
  4. We tuck the bottom edge so that we get a pocket for the weighting agent. We sew and insert the weighting rail.
  5. The second wooden plank must be fixed to the frame or above the window, and then we attach tapes to this plank to fix the raised curtains.
  6. We attach the finished curtain to the impromptu cornice using a furniture stapler.

Important! With this installation method, it will be problematic to remove the entire fabric for replacement or washing. Therefore, we offer the best option - this is Velcro. Glue one part of it to the bar, and sew the second along the edge of the curtain. So you can easily replace the boring curtain with a new one.

As you can see, it is not very difficult to make such unusual fabric blinds yourself. Stock up on creative inspiration and patience and then everything will work out!

DIY roller blinds: a simple master class

Roller blinds are distinguished by their neatness and strict style, which will make them a great addition to a kitchen in a modern or classic style. Window decoration with curtains is an important element in the interior design process. This question is especially relevant in the arrangement of small spaces - such as a small kitchen. One of the best solutions for such areas is do-it-yourself roller blinds sewn and mounted on a frame. Their mechanism is not as complicated as it might seem at first glance, and it is quite affordable to make it yourself. How to make roller blinds - a detailed master class will help you figure it out.

Advantages and benefits of roller blinds

The mechanism of roller blinds is a piece of fabric, which, opening a window opening, is wound into a roll on a roller hidden in a pocket.

Roller blinds allow you to easily control the lighting of the kitchen

This principle of operation has its advantages for window decoration over traditional curtains in their classic form:

  • they are suitable for any room, from the living room to the kitchen;
  • have simple and very convenient designs;
  • with their help it is easy to adjust the lighting;
  • used as independent curtains, and in tandem with other curtains;
  • they are hung on both wooden and plastic frames.

Roller blinds are easy to mount directly on the window frame. So they will not interfere when the window is opened in ventilation mode.

The principle of operation of roller blinds

Making roller blinds with your own hands, based on the proposed master class, will cost much less than choosing a ready-made mechanism in a store. Their cut is so simple that it is accessible even to those who do not have perfect sewing skills.

The principle of operation of roller blinds (diagram)

The principle of operation of roller blinds is as follows:

  1. The function of the cornice is performed by a rod-shaft, which is mounted on the frame or above the window opening. On it the canvas is held.
  2. The fabric itself is fixed with garters of cords or ribbons. They are mounted in the upper part of the structure, where the shaft mechanism is arranged.
  3. Garters allow you to open the curtains to any height.
  4. Depending on the shape, how to sew the roller blinds, they can have several transverse "sashes" of different widths, adjustable with garters.

Measurements for roller blinds

To build a pattern for roller blinds, it is important to determine the dimensions that you want to mount on the window - whether they will cover only the glass or hide the window frame.

Roller blinds for the kitchen can be of various types, so before taking measurements, you need to decide on the design

For this:

  • the window is measured and all the obtained values are recorded in a notepad;
  • the length of the product is calculated from the sum of the height of the window, plus 15 cm for pockets and 2 for cutting sections;
  • curtain width - those dimensions that will close the glass in the frame plus 2 cm for cutting sections.

The choice of fabric for curtains in the kitchen

When choosing a fabric, two features should be considered:

  • curtains should be of high quality to protect from light;
  • they will be clearly visible in the window from the street.

A denser fabric will significantly darken the sunny side When choosing a fabric, do not forget about the pattern on the outside, because the roller blinds are perfectly visible from the street.

Therefore, the canvas should be dense and preferably double-sided. If the selected fabric does not meet these parameters, there is no need to be upset. It’s just that it will take twice as many calculations as required by measurements to sew it in two layers inside out to each other.

It would be better to choose a material that has an antistatic effect. So dust will not settle on the curtains, and they will need to be cleaned less often.

Necessary materials and tools

To make original curtains, you can limit yourself to choosing the right fabric by hanging it on a ready-made mechanism from a hardware or hardware store. But its design can be assembled independently.

The described master class will require the simplest tools and available materials:

  • 2 wooden slats the length of the window opening;
  • furniture stapler;
  • sewing machine;
  • metal corners;
  • the cloth;
  • thick satin or corsage ribbon;
  • decorative buttons or buttons.

Master class on tailoring and installation of roller blinds for the kitchen

To sew roller blinds with your own hands, it will take an hour and a half of free time

A detailed master class will help you quickly understand the manufacturing technology of roller blinds.

You just need to follow the instructions:

  1. If the selected fabric is double-sided, cut sections are tucked into cut parts, stitched with a basting stitch, then stitched on a sewing machine.
  2. If the curtain is made from two pieces of fabric, the patterns are folded with the right side inward and connected with basting stitches from the bottom and sides, then sewn on a typewriter. The workpiece is turned on the front side, the corners are carefully straightened, steamed with an iron and the upper part of the curtains is built up.
  3. In order for the curtain to be beautifully stretched, a weighting agent is attached to the bottom. To do this, the lower edge is tucked and sewn to the canvas to make a pocket. A rail or metal rod is inserted into it.
  4. The curtain fabric is attached to the base - a wooden beam. The fabric is placed on a flat surface, the upper edge of the future curtain is wrapped around the rail and pinned with a furniture stapler.
  5. As garters, use ready-made ribbons or sew them with your own hands from a fabric that matches the color. The length of the garters is determined by twice the height of the window plus 15-20 cm per knot or buttons.
  6. Garters are attached to the base with a stapler. They will hold the roll of the rolled up curtain.
  7. To fix roller blinds in a window opening or on a frame, use metal corners. They are first screwed to the wall or frame, then fixed by the upper part on both sides to the base of the roll structure.

That's the whole technology of tailoring and installation of the most elementary design of roller blinds. To make such, you need to spend only an hour and a half of free time with minimal material costs.

Roller blinds in the kitchen (photo)

Making windows in a room or on a glazed balcony is an important part of design decisions. Without textiles, every room will look faceless, but if you want to keep it concise and save money, then you can sew roller blinds with your own hands.

Roller blinds - features and benefits

Such products are considered an excellent alternative to blinds and can be used both independently and in addition to existing curtains. The main advantages of roller blinds are:

  • the possibility of their installation on wooden or plastic windows;
  • good fit to the windows, due to which the possibility of looking into the house from the outside is excluded;
  • ease of care;
  • the ability to choose a translucent or very dense material that allows you to qualitatively darken the room;
  • design variety.

Curtains of this type look amazing in minimalist interiors, but are, in principle, universal. After all, you can choose a textured canvas or material with any pattern - so that it matches the theme of the room or the color of the window frames. By the way, the canvas on the window can only be partially opened, which makes this solution incredibly functional.

Roller Blinds vs Roman Blinds - What's the difference?

Roller blinds and Roman blinds are very similar in appearance, but different opening mechanism. So, Roman blinds are assembled into folds arranged horizontally, and rolled curtains are twisted and fixed with special garter ribbons.

Both in that, and in other design the tape tape fixed in fabric is provided. Roman blinds, when opened, will create a drapery from beautiful folds, and rolled ones are twisted into a roll.

Roman blinds are also popular and are often used in the interior of balconies and loggias. About that, and what is required for this, read our article.

Choosing the right material

Before you sew roller blinds with your own hands, you need to calculate the required amount of material. If fastening will be carried out in a window opening, then the opening is measured, but if to a wooden frame, then the dimensions of the glass are measured. Cuts prepared for sewing should have the following dimensions:

  • the width of the curtain is the width of the opening (glass) + 2-4 cm for allowances;
  • curtain length - opening (glass) height + 5-15 cm.

Cloths of fabric with the indicated dimensions need 2 - for the front and back sides. By the way, they can have a different pattern, or they can be performed the same. You will also need fabric (ribbons or decorative cords) to make garters - the length of the fabric strips is equal to two curtain lengths plus 25 cm additionally. For sewing and subsequent fastening, you will also need:

  • a wooden bar for fasteners with dimensions of approximately 3x4 cm (you can replace the bar with a metal tube) - the dimensions of the fastener must correspond to the width of the curtain;
  • if you do not want to make the mount yourself, then you can use a ready-made purchased cassette system;
  • for weighting, you need a metal rod or a wooden plank;
  • furniture stapler and paper clips;
  • screwdriver and screws for mounting the mount;
  • sewing accessories.

The fabric for such curtains must be chosen with great care - it is better if it is material with special impregnation(dust-, dirt-repellent, antistatic, antibacterial). Such a design will be not only more aesthetic, but also easy to maintain. You can also choose a fabric with different light-transmitting properties:

  • light-scattering, passing a certain amount of sunlight into the room;
  • reflective, that is, maximally impenetrable to sunlight - a balcony covered with such curtains will help keep you cool in the summer heat.

As for the design and patterns on the fabric, here your choice is practically unlimited - you can order a plain material, a fabric with photo printing or a bright expressive ornament. Recommendations for choosing a material design are as follows:

  • it is desirable that the textiles harmonize in color with the furniture;
  • dark plain fabrics are out of place in the kitchen or dining room; for these rooms, material with floral patterns or abstractions is better;
  • the pattern on the curtains should not repeat the pattern on the wallpaper;
  • successful color combinations: chocolate with beige, cream and gold, blue with yellow, silver and white, red with white or gold;
  • translucent fabrics will help you visually expand the room;
  • material with transverse stripes will make the walls wider, and a vertical pattern will help increase the height of the ceilings;
  • south-facing windows can be made cooler using fabrics in blue, green, lilac (cold colors), and northern rooms will become warmer thanks to orange, red or yellow shades of textiles;
  • blackout material will help to darken any room, because it has a dense texture that does not transmit light at all.

How to make your own roller blinds

The sewing process is as follows:

Installation of roller blinds is not difficult. They are attached to the frame of a plastic window with adhesive tape, and on the wall - with screws. Roller blinds guarantee the attractiveness of the window opening both closed and open. This is the best solution for kitchens, nurseries, balconies and loggias - attractive, concise, easy to clean.
