Double-leaf plastic doors to the balcony. PVC entrance doors (metal-plastic) to a private house

Not so long ago, metal-plastic doors were installed only on balconies. With the development of technology, wider and more reliable profiles have appeared, allowing them to be used as entrances in private houses and cottages. They are devoid of the main disadvantages of wooden doors - they do not swell from moisture, do not require regular updating of the paintwork, and they can look exactly the same or completely different - it's up to you. Of course, they cannot be compared with the reliability of metal entrance doors, but in cottages and private houses such a margin of safety is not needed. First, you can enter through the windows. They are not smaller now. Secondly, they protect the territory, and the gates. So the entrance plastic doors are a completely justified choice. Especially when you consider that they have many advantages and not very many disadvantages.

Entrance plastic doors can be part of the entrance group - with windows on the sides

Pros and cons of a plastic front door

  • Flexible manufacturing technology that allows you to make PVC entrance doors of any configuration, color, design.
  • Good performance in protection from cold / heat.
  • Various opening systems
  • Can be used in hot and cold climates.
  • They do not respond to changes in humidity.
  • Provide good protection against noise, dust.
  • Alarm compatible.
  • The ability to install locks of any complexity - conventional and with closing in all directions.
  • Requires minimal maintenance, easy to clean.

Of all the advantages, it often becomes decisive that you can order plastic entrance doors according to your own project. Without any restrictions. Another plus is the possibility of implementing a swing or sliding system. The sliding system is perfectly combined with French windows. Glazing area and they practically do not differ from windows, as a result we get a very harmonious solution. Thus, they make out the exit to the terrace, to the garden, to the backyard. Other materials do not provide such an opportunity - they are not compatible with the sliding system.

Sliding plastic entrance doors are a great way to arrange access to the terrace, garden to the backyard

Despite all the advantages, they have plastic entrance doors and disadvantages:

  • High price.
  • Difficulty of installation.
  • Not too high burglary resistance.

Most of the questions arise during installation. To increase reliability, a metal reinforcing plate is installed around the perimeter of the doorway. This also increases the complexity of the installation. In addition, it is necessary to comply with the technology that provides a high degree of heat and sound insulation. All this makes installation more difficult.

Entrance plastic doors: types, materials

How plastic entrance doors will meet your expectations, how well they will work, whether or not they will cause inconvenience, depends on whether the materials and fittings are correctly selected. The stability of the form depends on how mature the technology is (whether there is reinforcement in the corners, how holes for fittings are cut in the profile). The combination of these points ensures that even street plastic doors work without problems. Therefore, pay attention to every nuance.

Opening method

By the number of wings, plastic entrance doors are one, two, three and four-leaf. Most often in private houses they put doors with one or two leaves. Bivalves can be with two or one movable doors. The second sash also opens, but only in certain situations - if you need to let more air into the house or bring something voluminous. For such models, the second sash is fixed with latches at the top and bottom. Three-leaved most often have one fixed and two movable leaves, in four-leaved - a two-to-two ratio.

The number of leaves is determined by the width of the doorway. Up to 90 cm, you can make one sash, from 1 meter to 1.8 m - two. A wider passage requires a three-leaf door.

According to the method of opening, the doors are hinged (with opening inward or outward) and sliding. Swing doors can be ordinary or pendulum (when they can open both inside the room and outside). In private houses, pendulum doors are very rarely installed, mainly if the doors lead to the terrace.

Another point: the entrance doors to a private house usually open outwards. It's not a rule, but it's accepted. Firstly, it is more difficult to knock them out from the outside, and secondly, it is easier, if necessary, to take them out from the inside. But we must remember that this increases the cost of the design, since loops are required of a different type, more expensive.

Profile

The quality and properties of entrance plastic doors are determined by the quality and properties of the profile from which they are made. Therefore, be very careful when choosing a profile. It is advisable to use products of well-known companies. Rehau, Veka, KBE. They are tested, you know exactly what you will get. Nameless or little-known manufacturers are a big risk. No matter how soon the doors had to be changed because of their unsatisfactory quality.

Profile thickness and number of chambers

Street plastic doors are made of a special profile. It is wider and "thicker" than the one used for the manufacture of balcony doors and certainly wider than the one that goes to the windows. A reinforcing element is installed inside the profile. For plastic doors, they put a contour made of durable plastic, in metal-plastic reinforcing contours made of aluminum.

For metal-plastic entrance doors, a class A profile is used, the minimum thickness of which is 70 mm, the maximum is 118 mm, the thickness of the outer wall is at least 3 mm. In addition, it has more chambers, reinforced with thicker aluminum.

The choice of profile thickness depends on several factors. The first is the climate zone. The colder / hotter in your area, the thicker the profile should be taken. The second factor to consider is whether there is a vestibule in the house. If it is, you can try to save money - the vestibule will be a buffer zone. At the same time, do not forget about the cost - the thicker the profile, the more expensive it is.

Another important point is the number of isolated chambers in the profile (the more, the better, and the minimum is 3 chambers, but 5 is better), as well as the wall thickness of the outer lintel. A thicker outer wall - its greater strength, better protection against temperature extremes.

Also, to make the PVC entrance door more rigid, reinforcing elements are placed in the corners. This is an important point that prevents distortions from gravity or temperature differences. All these features affect the final quality and ease of use.

There is also the so-called "warm profile for a plastic door." It has an additional plastic insert - a thermal break. It isolates the outer and inner part of the profile. This improves thermal insulation characteristics, and has a positive effect on sound insulation.

Reinforcement

A profile is used to manufacture the frame and sash, inside of which a reinforcing element is inserted - an aluminum profile. It can be C-shaped, U-shaped and closed - in the form of a rectangle. The most reliable is closed. It has a high rigidity, which guarantees the preservation of the shape of the door during temperature changes. And pay attention, such a closed reinforcing profile should be both on the frame and on the sash. Then, even with large temperature differences, the doors will not “bend out”.

The difference between the profile for the manufacture of a plastic entrance door in thicker plastic, more chambers and a reinforcing contour made of thicker metal

At the same time, a reinforcing profile is used with a thickness of 2 mm - this is the minimum, but there is also 3 mm metal. This makes the structure heavier. It is by the mass of the door that one can indirectly distinguish a balcony block from an entrance plastic door. It makes no sense to take too thick metal, but thin metal simply cannot withstand the load.

How holes are cut

There is only one very important point. In many firms, in the manufacture of doors, holes for the installation of locks are cut out with a grinder. Moreover, the holes are made with a solid "margin". This is easier and faster, but such holes significantly weaken the structure.

It is with this method of cutting holes that the door bends with a “saber” at large temperature differences. This is when it is -20°C outside and +25°C in the house. In principle, the profile begins to bend at less significant differences - from about -5 ° C. Just as the difference increases, the gap at the top and bottom grows. Before ordering plastic doors, make sure that the holes are milled and not cut with a grinder.

loops

Since the profile and double-glazed windows for exit plastic doors have a solid weight, the hinges must be reliable. Models - overhead only, window models are not applicable. It is desirable to choose the best available - PVC outdoor entrance doors to a private house open / close very often. Only good quality guarantees many years of trouble-free use.

Three loops are placed on a sash of standard width (60-80 cm), on wider ones - 4, rarely more. Each of the loops is designed for 150-200 kg, so their total "carrying capacity" is very high. But you should not install less powerful ones - the doors open often, so the fittings must be reliable. That is why it is better to order hinges from well-known manufacturers. It is they who are responsible for how long the door will serve, whether or not it will warp.

Special hinges for plastic doors provide for the presence of

In order for the doors not to warp during operation, it is important to adjust them well. The weight of the sash should be evenly distributed on all hinges. Then, under any conditions, there will be no distortion and other problems.

Glazing

Plastic entrance doors can be without glass at all. Also glass can be located in the upper part of the door (its height is any). There is a third option - full glazing.

If the glass is made from the very top to the bottom, it is usually separated by a transverse crossbar - an impost. This is not necessary - there are firms that make solid glass, but there are few of them, since the technology is complex. Such glazing is much more expensive, and there is also the possibility that it can change the geometry. So basically they are trying to persuade them to divide by impost. Such double-glazed windows are easier to manufacture, cheaper, more reliable. The location of the crossbar is determined depending on the design - if the entrance group assumes the presence of windows nearby, they are made either at the same level or with a significant difference.

For street plastic doors, double-glazed windows are usually used. They provide a sufficient level of sound and heat insulation. Single-chamber energy-saving double-glazed windows also have good performance. In general, there are the following types of double-glazed windows:

Glasses can be ordinary, patterned, colored, satin (matte) with mirror coating. There are also armored ones. All this makes it possible to choose the characteristics of double-glazed windows for plastic entrance doors according to your requirements. Each firm has slightly different characteristics, the photo above shows data on Ruhau firms.

Threshold

Outdoor exit plastic doors can be equipped with two types of threshold:

Choosing a threshold is not the most difficult point, but it also contributes to the level of comfort. For entrance groups, it is desirable to make the threshold with a thermal break. This will prevent the cold from penetrating through the threshold.

Locking systems

Entrance plastic doors can be equipped with conventional locks - with one fixation point (single-lock) or multi-clamp. Multi-pressers have several "tongues" coming out of the sash.

There are two types of locks with multiple locks - multi-clamp and multi-lock. Clamps are designed for the best clamping of the sash to the frame. This ensures the preservation of heat, so such locks should be used if the entrance plastic doors separate a warm room from the street or a cold vestibule.

The second type - multi-lock - have a hanged burglary resistance. They have longer crossbars (tongues), which are more difficult to wring out. These locks are worth using if security is of the utmost importance to you. More specifically, the walls are stone, the windows are small, with roller shutters and an alarm installed. Then it makes sense to put a more secure lock. Otherwise, intruders will simply bypass the doors using the windows.

If you need both characteristics - both good thermal insulation and reliability - you can put a multi-clamp anti-burglary. They have trunnions (tongues) in the form of a mushroom. You can't hack them that easily.

Locks in multi-clamp locks are located vertically (from 4 to 6) and in the corners (additional ones are installed at high heights). This helps to improve the fit of the door. They can be driven by a key, or they can be driven by a handle. It is more convenient to use the pen. But it should be borne in mind that multi-clamp locks require a certain sequence of actions when closing. Over time, the owners get used to this, but at first it causes inconvenience.

Video on assembling a plastic door

It is unlikely that someone decides to assemble plastic doors on their own. It’s just that after watching these videos it’s easier to understand the structure of the door, the purpose of each of the elements.

September 24, 2016
Specialization: master in the construction of plasterboard structures, finishing work and laying flooring. Installation of door and window blocks, facade finishing, installation of electrics, plumbing and heating - I can give detailed advice on all types of work.

If you have a balcony or loggia, then most likely you have a balcony door with a window on one or two sides. This type of structure is called a balcony block and can have a variety of configurations.

Previously, during construction, wood products were always installed, the requirements for which are prescribed in GOST 11214-86 “Wooden windows and balcony doors with double doors for residential and public buildings”. In modern buildings, plastic is increasingly being installed, which is much better in terms of reliability. If you are thinking about replacing this part, then this review will tell you all the nuances of the work and the types of structures that can be used.

Legal aspects related to balcony doors

I am often asked questions about whether the dismantling of a balcony door is a redevelopment. There are a few things to consider here:

  • If you just want to remove the window and door and leave an opening, then no approvals are needed, because the wall configuration does not change;
  • If you need to expand the opening, then you can not do without coordination. If you live in a panel house, then you will most likely not be given permission, if in a brick house, then such an opportunity may be present;
  • If your balcony is transitional and can be used as an evacuation passage, then you will not receive a dismantling permit. You can only replace the balcony block;
  • Finally, if you want to replace the door with a different type of structure, then no permits are needed.

You can put all-glass structures instead of standard ones or replace wood with PVC, there are no restrictions. The main thing is that the design is reliable and durable. If you are interested in the requirements for glass doors on transitional balconies, then the most important of them is burglary resistance, most modern manufacturers use anti-burglary fittings, so this question disappears by itself.

In the review, I will talk about which doors can be installed, especially since there are many options, and each of them has its own advantages.

Door types

I will talk about three main options: wooden, plastic and aluminum doors to the balcony. Each of the solutions has its own advantages and disadvantages, so the final choice in any case is yours.

Wooden doors

This option is well known to almost everyone - products do not tolerate moisture well, the structure deforms over time, which is why the door does not close well. But modern products are very different from Soviet versions, these are no longer low-quality doors, in our time they have a number of advantages:

  • The structure is made of glued laminated timber, which tolerates moisture changes much better and practically does not deform over time. Such products will not warp in a couple of years, they will work as expected for a long time;

  • High-quality fittings should be used in the design, this guarantees ease of use;

In general, I would advise first of all to clarify what fittings are used in the design. No one will put expensive components on low-quality products, so if the seller talks about the reliability of the hardware, then most likely you have a good option.

  • Wood is an environmentally friendly material, and this, according to many, is its main advantage. In addition, the beauty of the natural structure of wood can be very useful in many interiors, and if you wish, you can buy painted in the options you need;

  • The thermal insulation performance of wood is much higher than that of plastic or aluminum, so if you need to protect the room from the penetration of cold, then choose wooden doors with energy-saving double-glazed windows. The most reliable option is a double design, in which there is space between the canvases;
  • Another plus of wooden doors is that, if necessary, you can carry out repairs yourself. The surface can be painted with any suitable composition, and the failed fittings can be replaced with a new one;

  • Structures can be made from both pine and more durable species: oak or larch. The latter options are much stronger and resist moisture much better, but their cost will be noticeably higher than that of standard solutions.

Now let's deal with the disadvantages, they are also available:

  • If you have an open balcony, then over time the paintwork on the structure will inevitably collapse and painting of all elements will be required. If you have a closed balcony or loggia, then this aspect does not matter;
  • The biggest disadvantage of wood products is the high price. For example, a standard version of a pine balcony block measuring 2000x1500 mm will cost you about 35-37 thousand rubles, a larch product will be 4-5 thousand more expensive. And if you decide to install an oak structure, then be prepared to spend about 70,000 rubles.

Plastic windows

This is the most popular and sought-after product option today. There are several reasons for this popularity:

Affordable price The cost of a balcony block averages from 10 to 15 thousand, as you can see, in comparison with the same tree, this option wins at times. But I don’t advise buying the cheapest designs, it’s better to pay more, but get a product from a high-quality profile with solid fittings and energy-saving double-glazed windows

Advantage Description
Durability The design will serve you for decades, and if you use it on an open balcony or loggia, then the service life increases significantly. Roughly speaking, you can put plastic and forget that the doors need to be changed in the short term. PVC is not afraid of changes in temperature and humidity, which determines its durability.
Good performance High-quality constructions have good indicators of heat and sound insulation, that is, for a reasonable price you get an excellent solution that will protect your home from cold and extraneous sounds. If the balcony is glazed, then even near the highway the noise in the apartment will be minimal
Choice of color If the usual white color seems too dull and boring to you, then you can purchase laminated products. They can be of different colors, as well as imitate the structure of natural wood, making the design as attractive as possible.

It should also be noted that in plastic doors the glazing area is much larger than in wooden counterparts. Double-glazed window can be from floor to ceiling, which provides the best illumination of the premises.

Of course, PVC balcony doors have their drawbacks:

  • Many believe that the material of manufacture has a negative impact on human health. This is only partly true: there are indeed harmful components in plastic, but their content does not exceed the allowable standards established by law. If they can be used in Europe with its strict regulations, then there is no need to worry about the safety of such products;
  • The appearance of products is standard, even the use of lamination does not make them exclusive, because the same profile is used for production;
  • Over time, fittings require adjustment or even replacement. For example, if the door does not open for ventilation, but otherwise works well, then adjustment is needed, but if there are problems in all modes, then most likely the mechanism or its individual parts need to be replaced. Also, seals can wear out over time, but replacing them is not a big problem.

Aluminum structures

This option is used more and more often on balconies due to several important advantages:

  • Designs can be both cold and warm. If earlier aluminum doors (most often sliding) were used only on insulated balconies, then modern ones themselves perfectly protect from the cold and can also be used in cold spaces;

  • Aluminum is not afraid of changes in humidity and temperature, is not afraid of precipitation, so these doors can serve for decades. This metal is not subject to corrosion, so there is no point in worrying about its safety;
  • Structures of various sizes are made from such a profile, and the glazing in them is always continuous, which improves the appearance and allows you to see everything that happens behind the door;
  • The material does not burn, and also does not emit any substances harmful to humans, so it can be used in any premises without any restrictions;
  • Another important plus is the low weight of the structure, it does not create a load on the structure and is easy to install.

Now let's deal with the cons, they are as follows:

  • Aluminum has low soundproofing performance, which is why it is undesirable to use it in noisy places;
  • In terms of thermal insulation, this option is still inferior to both plastic and wood;
  • If scratches appear on the surface, then removing them will be very problematic.

Types of structures

In addition to the material for making doors to the balcony, they can also differ in design, I will tell you about the main options, each of them is suitable for certain conditions, so there should be no problems with the choice.

swing doors

This option is the most common and simple, but there are many types of construction that have their differences, let's deal with them:

  • The standard swing option is when the entire width of the doorway is closed with one leaf, which opens into the room in a direction convenient for you. The design can be different: you can insert glass from the bottom to the top, they can divide it into two parts and make one deaf, it all depends on your preferences. If desired, an additional anti-mosquito door can be installed, which will protect the room from insects in the summer;

  • The second option is a double-leaf structure, one part of which opens and the other is deaf. This reduces the cost of the product and simplifies the task of how to beat the opening: put two leaves of different widths, and the system looks much better than a huge door. In houses of the 50s, the dimensions of the balcony door are non-standard, so it may be necessary to install a structure with additional glazing in the upper part so that the height of the leaf is standard;

  • If the width of the opening is large, then an excellent option would be to install a double-leaf option with an impost(this is the name of the jumper in the middle, to which the wings adjoin). This option is durable, but when moving, the jumper interferes, so this type of product is advisable to use only in cases where you use one sash, and the second is most often in the closed position;
  • A double-leaf double-leaf door is distinguished by the fact that there are no jumpers between the leaves, one part of it is fixed at the top and bottom with special latches that open if necessary. If necessary, the latch opens, and you get a large opening without any obstacles. This is a very convenient solution, but its cost is much higher than that of the impost option described above;

Sliding systems

This option is only suitable for those who have a large opening and can fit two or more doors into it. There are two main types of structures:

  • Portal doors, this design is also called a compartment by analogy with cabinets. Its main feature is that two or more wings are located on special rails. The movable part of the structure, if necessary, is fed onto itself and shifted to the side, everything is simple and reliable. In the highest quality models, the sash can be folded back for ventilation, it is very convenient and practical;

  • Another option is an accordion door, which was named so for the specifics of its opening: the wings fold like an accordion and stand on the side, freeing the opening. This option looks very impressive in large openings, and often the design is made double-leaf - one part opens in everyday use, and the second as needed, a good example is shown in the photo below.

In the end, I would like to add a few comments about the external fittings so that you can easily open and close the door from the outside, and you do not have a situation where the door slammed shut and you were left on the balcony.

There are several options for solving the problem:

  • You can put full-fledged rotary handles both inside and out, then you can open the structure from any side, and the problem of how to close the door from the outside will not stand at all. The disadvantage of this solution is that strangers can enter the house if they get on the balcony, in order to avoid this, I advise you to put a full-fledged structure with a lock on the outer handle, among other things, this will allow you to close the balcony from children;
  • The second option is to attach a magnetic latch from the outside, this is a very simple solution: a block with magnets is attached to one part of the structure, a metal bar to the second, even an inexperienced craftsman will not have any questions about how to install this element. For convenience, a simple handle can be attached from the outside to open the sash with it.

Conclusion

Whichever option you choose, be it a glass balcony door, a multi-leaf structure or a wooden version, it is important to purchase a quality product equipped with reliable fittings. The video in this article will tell you additional information on the topic, and if something is not clear to you, then feel free to write your questions in the comments below the review.

Balcony doors separate the space of a loggia or balcony from the rest of the room. Thanks to them, protection against the penetration of cold air into the house is provided. In addition, the doors let light into the room, as, in the vast majority of cases, they are transparent. If the door is comfortable and functional, it is always pleasant and comfortable to use it. As a glazing of structures, standard glass and double-glazed windows are used, the same as on windows.

Types of balcony doors

Depending on the combination with windows, the doors to the balcony are divided into the following types:

  1. Free standing doors.
  2. Combined with a window. These are the so-called balcony blocks:
    • windows are on both sides of the door;
    • the window is to the left of the door;
    • the window is to the right of the door.

Depending on the opening mechanism, the door can be:

  • rotary;
  • swing-out (like the previous version, it can be with left or right opening);
  • sliding,
  • deaf.

Depending on the design of the door are:

  • monocotyledonous, having one leaf;
  • dicotyledonous, which have 2 valves.

Doorways have certain standards. So, the width of a hinged balcony door can be in the range of 70-90 cm. Its height is 200-210 cm. In private houses and in old apartment buildings, the height of balcony doors can reach up to 280 cm, and the width - up to 130 cm. In individual projects, more dimensional structures that occupy the entire wall can also be used.

balcony door modifications

Exit to the balcony can be decorated in different ways. Whatever material modern balcony doors are made of, their glazing is chosen by the owners at their discretion.

The main modifications look like this:

  • The door is completely transparent. A single large double-glazed window is inserted into it. This is the most popular type of doors to the loggia, allowing more light to enter the room;
  • . This is a double door, each half of which is glazed. The amount of transmitted light in the room is maximum;
  • The balcony door is divided into 2 parts, each of which is glazed. The design of such a door provides a jumper, which can be located at different heights;
  • The same 2 parts (or one), but only the lower part is closed with a sandwich (plastic doors to the balcony) or a wooden panel (if the doors are made of wood). This is the most economical option.

Design features of balcony doors

Before replacing old balcony doors or redevelopment, the question often arises What are the best balcony doors? It depends mostly on the features of the balcony opening, its size, your preferences and possibilities. According to their design, balcony doors are divided into several varieties, each of which has the right to exist:

1. Standard swing doors to the balcony. This is the most popular and inexpensive design, often included in the balcony block. The door opens into the room on one side.

In the photo there is a plastic swing-type PVC balcony door with tilt-and-turn fittings

2. double doors, where one of the valves is deaf, and the second is opening. This is a fairly economical option. A blind sash is used as an additional window. You can wash it by going out to the balcony. This design is often used in the case of a wide doorway.

3. Double doors with impost. Both wings can be opened, but between them there is a fixed rigid insert - an impost. Thanks to him, the sashes are fixed in the closed position.

Tip: If possible, do not purchase such doors, as a fixed impost creates an obstacle when moving to the balcony and back.

4. . It consists of two parts, one of which is fixed at the bottom and top of the frame. If necessary, the shtulp opens, as a result of which both doors swing open. This is a very popular type of balcony doors, although quite expensive.

5. Sliding doors on the balcony. Their characteristic difference is the ability to move the valves along the guide rails. This is a fairly large category, which includes the following types of doors:

Materials for a balcony door

Balcony doors can be made from several materials. How not to make a mistake with the choice? To do this, you need to study the features of each material.

PVC doors

This is the most common type of balcony doors, distinguished by reliability and reasonable cost (for a plastic balcony door, the price, as well as for doors made of other materials, depends on many parameters, such as size, opening method, modification, fittings, etc.).

Metal-plastic doors to the balcony have the following advantages:

  • extraordinary durability;
  • high degree of heat and noise insulation;
  • they are not affected by temperature fluctuations and changes in humidity;
  • doors can be laminated, changing their color;
  • environmental friendliness is within the normal range.

Disadvantages of PVC doors:

  • conservative appearance;
  • the need for regular maintenance of fittings and seals.

aluminum doors

Increasingly, aluminum profile structures are used as balcony doors. Moreover, warm doors from such a profile are no longer a rarity.

Advantages of aluminum doors:

  • light weight;
  • acceptable cost;
  • Fire safety;
  • the ability to produce doors of any size and shape;
  • absolute environmental friendliness;
  • durability, calculated in tens of years;

Disadvantages of aluminum doors:

  • insufficient sound insulation of the room;
  • even warm doors are inferior in terms of heat saving to PVC structures;
  • the door surface is at risk of scratches that are difficult to remove.

Wooden doors

Unlike old door structures that were prone to deformation from excessive moisture and temperature changes, modern wooden doors to the balcony are almost the perfect choice. Such doors are made of glued laminated timber, which prevents them from warping and damage. Usually wooden doors have wood or MDF panels, or double-glazed windows.

Their advantages:

  • they are environmentally friendly;
  • the type of natural wood contributes to peace and harmony in the house;
  • convenient control, as the doors are equipped with modern high-quality fittings;
  • noble appearance;
  • high thermal insulation qualities of wood make the doors extremely comfortable at any time of the year.

Disadvantages of wooden doors:

  • if the balcony is not glazed from the outside, then moisture penetrating from the street acts on the door. This leads to the loss of its attractiveness, swelling and difficulty with its opening and locking;
  • high price, much higher than the cost of PVC structures.

Glass doors

Such doors are chosen by creative people. Glass doors to the balcony are completely devoid of a frame. They consist of double-glazed windows (glasses) and control fittings. Double-glazed windows use thick (about 1 cm) tempered glass or triplex. It is extremely difficult to break such glass.

Advantages of glass doors:

  • the use of glass doors allows you to fill the room with light as much as possible;
  • the room visually becomes larger;
  • the appearance of such doors is so unusual that it attracts the attention of guests at home;
  • doors are environmentally friendly and safe to use.

Disadvantages of glass doors:

  • the cost of such structures is very high due to the use of expensive glass;
  • doors are heavy;
  • low thermal insulation and tightness, therefore, it can only be used on a glazed and insulated balcony or loggia;
  • requires very precise installation by specialists. Otherwise, a slight misalignment may interfere with the perfect fit of the sashes.

Door hardware

Doors for a loggia or balcony are necessarily equipped with fittings, thanks to which they are locked and opened, as well as airing the room. High-quality fittings will make the door clamp around its entire perimeter as tight as possible. Door fittings are divided into internal and external. The internal part is similar in design. The composition of the external fittings includes the following elements:

  • Door handle. It can be one-sided or two-sided. In the latter case, the door can open in both directions. Handles are often equipped with locks to prevent children from accidentally opening them;
  • Stationary handle located on the door from the balcony side. With its help, the door is covered by a person on the balcony;
  • Balcony latch. It is a spring mechanism designed to keep the door closed without using the rotary handle. It can be very useful when you need to go out onto the balcony, closing the door tightly behind you;
  • Decorative lining covering the metal parts of the door;

Tip: If the balcony is not glazed, then it is advisable to install a mosquito net in the doorway.

Recently, plastic doors and windows have become quite widespread. The reason for this demand: practicality, durability, good performance, attractive appearance and affordable prices. Installing plastic doors or windows is the best solution for a balcony or apartment, as well as a winter garden. And knowing that today pvc doors and windows can be not only white, but also painted in RAL, in bulk or laminated to look like wood, with tinted or embossed glass, stained-glass windows or decorative bindings, they are used with great success as interior or front doors. Therefore, you can see plastic doors in Moscow and the Moscow region in almost every house.

  • plastic balcony doors

Only a properly installed balcony door can effectively protect the house from the cold. The peculiarity of balcony doors is that they are usually transparent, this is necessary for the normal flow of light into the room. In modern doors, instead of ordinary glass, the same double-glazed windows are installed as on the windows, which allows you to effectively save heat in the apartment.

Varieties of balcony doors

In order for you to choose the right balcony door, you first need to understand its varieties, find out the features of each option, its advantages and disadvantages.

Balcony doors differ in their location relative to the window: they can be integral with it and be located on the left or right side, as well as be a separate element.

The balcony door can be located to the left, to the right of the window or be in the middle

Also, balcony doors have different opening mechanisms:

  • the swing mechanism is traditional, therefore the most popular;
  • the sliding mechanism is convenient to use on small balconies;
  • the rotary mechanism is most often used in small apartments;
  • tilt-and-turn doors can additionally be opened for ventilation.

According to the type of construction, balcony doors can be single or double. Various materials are used for their manufacture: wood, plastic, glass, aluminum.

Before choosing a balcony door, you need to decide how it will be mounted. Usually, balcony blocks are installed in apartments, and it will be expensive and difficult to remake the wall for a different type of door.

Types of balcony doors according to the material of manufacture

The functionality and service life of a balcony door will largely depend on the material from which it is made. Consider the features of structures made of various materials, their advantages and disadvantages.

Wooden doors for the balcony

Wood is an environmentally friendly and safe material, but how practical will such doors be? People who love everything natural believe that a wooden door will be the most correct solution. They are guided by the fact that such designs have a chic appearance and environmentally friendly.

In order for a wooden balcony door to serve reliably, only dry, high-quality wood and modern double-glazed windows are used for its manufacture.

But despite the presentable appearance, wooden balcony doors have one serious drawback - after a while they dry out, and their functionality decreases, after which they poorly protect the room from the cold.

If you decide to use wooden doors on the balcony or loggia, then they must be additionally insulated. This is done at the points of fastening of double-glazed windows, as well as at the joints of the door frame. The easiest option would be to use self-adhesive tape. In order for the door to harmonize with the interior of the room, decorative upholstery materials are used that match the design of the room.

Plastic doors for a balcony

Superiority among balcony doors is confidently occupied by plastic structures, they are also PVC doors. This is due to the optimal ratio of such characteristics as quality and price. In addition, plastic doors are practical, they are convenient to use, and they have a beautiful appearance.

A plastic balcony door is a modern solution that not only reliably protects the room from the cold, but also has a beautiful view and low cost.

Among the disadvantages of PVC structures, some experts note their relative fragility, but it all depends on compliance with the rules of operation and maintenance. If you inspect them in time, if necessary, change the fittings and canvases, then such doors will serve you for decades.

Glass balcony doors

You will not meet glass doors to the balcony in the apartment very often, usually creative people choose such a solution. More often they are installed in cafes or offices, as they allow you to better attract customers.

To create a glass balcony door, the following materials can be used:

  • triplex;
  • plexiglass;
  • polycarbonate.

The materials described are transparent, but their strength is much higher than ordinary glass, so they are safer. If glass is used, it is pre-hardened, which greatly increases the strength and can withstand higher loads.

The glass door to the balcony is a modern and unusual solution that allows you to transform any apartment

There are two design options for such structures: frame and frameless. To create a frame, steel, aluminum, plastic or fiberglass are used. In the frameless version, there is no frame; fiberglass filler and polymer binders are used instead.

The advantage of this option is that the room turns out to be bright, its dimensions visually increase, glass is an environmentally friendly material. The disadvantage of a glass balcony door is its high cost and low thermal insulation performance, so it is recommended to install them only on glazed balconies. And also such doors are difficult to install, which is unlikely to be done on your own.

Combined balcony doors

A popular solution is the installation of combined doors. In this case, the lower part is usually made of PVC or wood, and double-glazed windows are installed on top. Thus, the bottom of the door well protects the room from the penetration of cold, and the transparent upper part allows a sufficient amount of light into the apartment.

Combined doors can have a panel or panel structure. The main advantage of the combined structures is their low cost, and covering the surface with veneer or laminated panels of the required shade allows you to select doors for any interior.

The combined design is usually made of wood or plastic from the bottom, and the upper part is a double-glazed window

The main disadvantage of combined balcony doors is that the buyer cannot check the filling that is inside, namely, the strength, sound and heat insulation characteristics of the structure depend on it.

To determine the quality of a combined balcony door, you can focus on its weight. If it is light, this indicates the use of cardboard or thin plates as a filler, which indicates poor sound and heat insulation characteristics.

Types of balcony doors according to their design

The choice of balcony door design depends on the size and shape of the opening in the wall, as well as on your preferences and financial capabilities. There are several types of doors that differ in design features, and each of them has both pluses and minuses.

More recently, there were practically no alternatives to traditional swing structures. But now there are sliding, sliding, panoramic doors on the market, you can install accordion doors.

Double balcony doors

Such a solution can be implemented both in an apartment or house, and in offices. The double door has a special design - two panels that are parallel to each other. Such doors were often installed in old houses, but have not lost their popularity even now.

A double door consists of two canvases located parallel to each other

The presence of two door panels allows you to better keep warm in the house, so these doors can be installed on an unglazed balcony. The disadvantage of this design is that each door leaf has its own fittings, the purchase of which will have to spend twice as much money.

Balcony double doors

In old houses, only a single balcony door was installed, but the modern layout of apartments allows the use of shtulp or double-leaf models. This design consists of two wings, most often one of them remains deaf, and the second is used, but both halves can be made open.

If only one sash opens, then all fittings are installed on it. When both doors open, shtulpovy fittings are installed, which makes the design more expensive. The advantage of the double-leaf option is that you can take out the overall furniture or other large items to the balcony.

The double-leaf door allows not only to normally go out to the balcony, but also to take out dimensional objects there.

Since each half of a double-leaf door is smaller than a single-leaf door, less stress is placed on the fittings, which increases its service life. The disadvantage of this design is that for its installation an opening is required, the width of which is at least 90 cm. The upper latch on the sash is located high, therefore, if it is necessary to fully open the doors, it will be difficult to reach it.

If you want to expand the opening for the installation of a double-leaf balcony door, then before carrying out work, you must definitely obtain permission from the housing commission.

Due to the fact that such a design has a large glass area, it better transmits light into the room. This allows you to visually enlarge the space, which is especially true for rooms that face north.

Sliding doors to the balcony

Such designs allow you to remove the barrier, so the room expands and is filled with sunlight. Installing a sliding balcony door gives the apartment a modern look. This solution allows you to make the apartment respectable, and also saves space when opening and closing doors. Sliding doors can open in parallel or tilt like windows.

Since the design has a significant weight, it is necessary to take a powerful and reliable profile. Most of such a door consists of glass, so you need to choose modern and high-quality double-glazed windows that have good thermal insulation characteristics.

Sliding doors do not take up space when opened, give the room a modern look

Wooden doors require more attention and care compared to plastic options. Laminated PVC structures embody the practicality and reliability of plastic, as well as the beauty of natural wood.

Sliding doors can be tilt-sliding type, they are light in weight, provide good tightness and thermal insulation. You can ventilate the room without opening the door for this.

The lifting-sliding design has large dimensions; such doors move along rails installed on the ceiling and floor. When you turn the handle, the canvas rises and moves to the side. This allows you to create durable structures up to 2.5 m wide.

Accordion balcony doors

This option, when opening the door leaf, resembles an accordion. Despite the design features, such doors have insufficient tightness and therefore can be used on a glazed balcony. The characteristics of the door will depend on the quality of the fittings and seals used.

The accordion door allows you to close a large opening, but it is better to install it on glazed balconies, since its tightness is low

The main advantage of such doors is that they take up little space, as they are folded like a fan. They are used in large openings, the width of which can reach 6 m. Compared with other door designs, these will have worse tightness.

Panoramic balcony doors

Panoramic doors can have a different design: sliding, hinged, in the form of an accordion. The frame can be made of plastic, aluminum, wood.

The main advantage of this solution is the presence of a large amount of sunlight in the room. It is necessary to provide blinds or curtains, as in summer the room will be very hot.

Panoramic balcony door - a modern solution that allows you to enjoy the view from the window

A beautiful panoramic view that can be enjoyed at any time of the year. For greater comfort, the door is equipped with a thermal break and warm glazing. This design provides a stylish design, it emphasizes the refined taste of the owners of the apartment and their financial situation. Among the disadvantages of this design, it is worth noting its high cost, the complexity of installation and maintenance.

Often people confuse sliding and sliding doors, they believe that they are one and the same. In fact, the feature of sliding doors lies in their name. They have wheels with which they open, and the weight of the canvas falls on them. This provides a rigid and reliable support. Sliding doors have only an upper guide, which negatively affects their performance.

Due to the presence of support wheels, the service life of sliding doors is much longer than that of sliding structures. In the process of their work, there are no problems, they do not warp or jam. During opening and closing, this design is much quieter.

The presence of a lower guide and support wheels makes the design of sliding doors more reliable and durable.

Their disadvantage is that the lower guide creates certain inconveniences, as it interferes with walking and dirt accumulates in it. Low thermal insulation properties do not allow the installation of sliding doors on an unglazed balcony. On the wall, which is located next to the door, you can not hang pictures, shelves, etc.

Balcony door dimensions

GOST 11214–86 indicates what the dimensions of the doors for the balcony should be. In old houses, the width of the doorway is only 61 cm. This allows you to normally pass through the doors, but you will not be able to carry overall things.

In modern apartments, the size of the window block has increased significantly. Now the width of the clearance for the door is 70–90 cm, and its height is from 2 to 2.2 m.

Standard width, height and thickness of the balcony door provide:

  • in total with the window sufficient illumination of the room;
  • repeated use and durability, which are provided by the rigidity of the structure;
  • thermal insulation of the room;
  • the possibility of ventilation of the room with open doors.

If you decide to make doors to order or purchase them yourself, then you need to correctly measure. Dimensions are taken from the outside and from the inside, they do it in several places. In addition to such parameters as the width and height of the balcony door, its thickness is also of great importance; according to existing standards, it should be 75 mm.

Balcony door installation

Before you start installing a balcony door, you first need to make the right measurements, purchase the necessary materials and tools. The most popular are plastic doors, so consider the process of installing them. To complete the work you will need:

  • measuring instruments;
  • level;
  • perforator;
  • plumb;
  • fasteners;
  • hammer.

Balcony door installation procedure:

  1. Dismantling the old door. Carefully remove the old structure and thoroughly clean the doorway from plaster. To avoid dust, the surface is coated with a primer.

    During dismantling, it is necessary to carefully remove the remains of the plaster so that they do not interfere with the correct installation of the new door.

  2. Preparation of a plastic door. Before installation, it must be disassembled. It will be easier to perform installation when the canvas is removed from the box and double-glazed windows are pulled out of it.

    When the leaf is separated from the door frame and the double-glazed window is removed, it is much easier to install the door and less likely to damage the glass.

  3. Door frame installation. To do this, there are fasteners in the plastic door kit. On the inside of the box there are special grooves into which the brackets are installed. For anchoring, a hole is made in the canvas, it is much easier and faster, but the appearance of the door will be spoiled. At least three fasteners are installed on each side.

    When installing the door frame, it is necessary to strictly observe both verticality and horizontality of its installation.

  4. Canvas installation. First, the canvas is planted on the lower canopy. The door is closed, while the parts of the upper hinge must match, when this happens, they are connected with a pin.

    After the canvas is installed on the lower canopy, the upper loops must match, and then they are fixed with a pin

  5. Door block sealing. After you have checked with the level the correct installation of the door frame and fixed it well, as well as installed the door leaf, the opening between it and the wall is filled with mounting foam.

    After the mounting foam has hardened, it must be protected from the negative influence of external factors, under the influence of which the material quickly loses its thermal insulation properties.

Operation features

In order for balcony doors to function normally for a long period, they must be properly operated and serviced in time:

  • periodically lubricate the moving parts of the fittings with technical vaseline and inspect them;
  • clean drainage holes;
  • inspect the condition of the seals and lubricate them with grease.

Care of the profile consists in its periodic cleaning from contamination, for this purpose special products or soapy water are used. Fittings must be protected from dirt and staining. Rubber seals should be cleaned of dirt twice a year and wiped with a special agent. This will preserve their elasticity and water-repellent characteristics.

Accessories for balcony doors

If plastic doors are mounted on the balcony, then usually a separate lock and lever handle are not installed for them. The same fittings are used as for windows. In this case, the quality of the fittings is of great importance, since the doors are heavier, and the load on the hinges, handles and locks will be greater.

To ensure better tightness, balcony doors are equipped with an average clamp. This prevents cold air from entering the room. For the same purposes, a vestibule and a balcony latch are used.

Fittings used on balcony doors:

  1. Balcony fence. It serves to fix the doors when a person goes out to the balcony. Its presence allows, although leaky, to close the doors and while the person is on the balcony, the heat will not leave the room.

    Balcony latch allows you to fix the door when a person is on the balcony

  2. Double sided handle. This device allows you to close the doors hermetically. It is not recommended to use it on the first floors, as this is an additional opportunity for thieves to enter the premises. For more reliable protection of the house from robbers, you can purchase a double-sided handle with a lock.

    The presence of a double-sided handle allows you to open the doors both from the outside and from the inside

  3. Mosquito net. This is an additional device for the balcony door, which is very popular. It does not let insects, dirt and fluff into the room. For ease of use, you can purchase a mosquito net in the form of a door, which is mounted on hinges and has its own handle for fixing and opening. This is a more convenient option than just a mesh, which you will have to remove and insert again every time you go out to the balcony.

    The mosquito net reliably protects the apartment from both insects and dirt, fluff

  4. Double glazing. Usually it is used the same as on windows. To normally protect the house from extraneous sounds and cold, it must have at least two cameras.

    If the balcony is glazed, then a single-chamber double-glazed window can be used in the doors, and if not, then a two-chamber one is better

  5. Threshold. To create it, use a part of an ordinary window sill. Such plastic has sufficient strength to support the weight of a person, and it is warmer than a concrete threshold. In order for the plastic threshold to withstand a lot of weight, it must be installed correctly, there should be no voids under it.

    The presence of a threshold does not allow cold air to enter the room

  6. Retaining devices. They are mounted on the floor or on the wall and do not allow the doors to swing wide open, and also fix them in a certain position.
  7. Door hinges. Although the weight of a plastic door is less than a wooden one, in order for it not to sag and work reliably, it is necessary to install powerful hinges and adjust them correctly. Basic requirements for door hinges:
  8. Automatic closers. These are special devices that allow you to smoothly close the doors without your participation. They can be installed both at the top and at the bottom of the door, but there are closers that are hidden in the end of the canvas. The door closer has the ability to adjust the closing speed.

    Automatic closers do not allow doors to close abruptly

  9. Locks. They serve to protect the apartment from thieves. Locking devices can be:
