Work order

Step 1. To begin with, a shelf of the required width and length is cut from a sheet of plywood or fiberboard.

It is worth knowing that it is recommended to place load-bearing pins with an average load on the material after 60-70 cm. If the shelf is longer, then over time the plywood or fiberboard will noticeably bend and sag.

Step 2. To increase the strength of the material, a metal profile equipped with internal stiffeners can be fixed at the ends of the plate.

Step 3. Holes for studs are marked along the edges of the shelf. It is worth knowing that it is advisable to drill 5-7 cm from the edges of the slab. If the holes are too close to the ends, the material may crumble under the weight of the items on the shelf.

Step 4. After the holes have been drilled, the shelf needs to be attached to the ceiling and, using a pencil, transfer the location of the holes to the ceiling. Thus, the structure will be located without distortions and there is no need to be afraid that the pins are deformed.

Anchor holes are drilled in the ceiling, dust is removed from them. The anchors are driven into the concrete until they stop and the nuts are tightened.

Long metal studs are connected to anchors located on the ceiling. The connection is fixed with nut-sleeves. It is also advisable to secure the connection with an additional conventional nut, which is screwed onto the thread of the stud.

Step 5. After the studs are firmly fixed to the ceiling, the shelf installation period begins. A nut is screwed onto the stud, then a washer. After that, a shelf is strung at the ends of the studs.

The shelf is fixed using a Grover washer and a control nut. Washers protect the shelf openings from kinking under load. The grover protects against loosening of the fastening nut. You can use two nuts for safety and greater structural strength. The final adjustment of the fixing hardware is carried out at the level.

This hanging shelf will significantly save space in your garage. The only drawback is the mobility of the structure. You can eliminate it using a special metal corner. One edge of the corner is attached to the wall, the other to the base of the shelf. In this way, the entire suspension structure is fixed. Also, the metal corner will strengthen the shelf, which will affect its durability.

DIY tool shelf

In order for all small tools to be at hand during locksmith or carpentry work, you can think over and make a special shield. Shelves-shields do not differ in their high carrying capacity and strength, heavy tools cannot be stored on them, but for small and necessary things that are always lost, such a design will be ideal.

It's important to know!

  1. It is advisable to hang the shelf with the tool on a plastered wall, otherwise condensation will accumulate between the brick or block surface and the wall of the shelf. Constant high humidity will negatively affect the shield material, may cause it to deform or rot.
  2. The average load per square meter of the backboard surface should not exceed 14 kg. Weighting the structure will lead to rapid destruction.
  3. The height of the backboard is determined by the height of the garage owner. The top edge of the shelf should not be taller than a person's height. Otherwise, it will be inconvenient to take tools from the shield.
  4. If the shelves are thought out on the shield, it is not advisable to make them closed. It will also make the job more difficult. All small tools and parts must be in the public domain.

How to make a shield with your own hands

Materials and tools

Step 1. First you need to choose the size of the shield. Most often, such a shelf is fixed in front of a workbench, behind which a person is engaged in repair work. It is desirable that the width of the shield is not much larger than the dimensions of the workbench.

Step 2. Then a shield is cut out of plywood or other material. Immediately, a place for small shelves is marked on it.

Step 3. Then, with the help of a jigsaw, shelves with side walls are cut out. The side walls of the shelves can be made the same size as the length of the backboard. Further, using long self-tapping screws, the shelf structure is assembled and attached to the surface of the shield. A place for storing jars and boxes with nails and other small things is ready.

Step 4. Attaching hooks. To do this, holes are drilled in the shield and dowels are driven into them and special threaded hooks are screwed in. It is advisable to think in advance where and what instrument will be located. Based on this, the hooks are drilled.

Then lugs or brackets are attached to the back wall to fix the shelf to the wall. The last step is to mount the shelf on the wall. Holes are drilled with a perforator, anchors are driven into them. If the shelf is fastened "tightly", then you can strengthen the fixation of the structure using a special washer, which will prevent the lugs from sliding off the anchor.

A simple and easy-to-use toolbox for tools and parts is ready. If all the tools and material are available, then it can be done in a few hours.

Good day, brains! A workshop, when it’s a mess, it’s not a workshop at all. And this article is devoted to the topic of "organizing" the tool, in which I have collected 9 not quite ordinary ways to store an improvised tool for your brain workshop... I guarantee they will fit any instrument that has ever existed on planet Earth!

In the fall of 2015, I created The Ultimate Magnetic Pegboard, but time passed and I had even more tools, which meant that I needed another homemade for the orderly storage of this very tool. In this brain leadership I will tell you about some of the attachments that I have equipped the new tool board with.

So let's go!

Step 1: Is a kitchen towel dispenser not a clip holder?

My grandma gave me a paper towel dispenser and I decided to use it. The shaft of this dispenser was plastic and did not support the weight of the clips, so I replaced it with a metal guide from the old one. brain printer, which I cut to the length I need * and glued to it with the help of epoxy on the sides of the mount.

When mounting this resulting clamp bar to the board, I used small wooden spacers to create more space and make it easier to remove / engage these clamps. Note that the clamps are quite heavy, so the more screws you use to attach the bar, the more reliable it will be.

To be honest, this method of storing the clamps is much simpler than all other clamping bars.

* I cut the guide almost half as long as I needed, so that there was room for others brain clamps which I plan to purchase soon.

My kitchen towel dispenser bar fits:

  • 3 x 15cm clips
  • 10cm-I clamp
  • 5cm-I clamp.

Step 2: And what about the clamps-couplers?

Cable ties have a wide range of uses, so why not use them as holders? In the storage board, I drilled a couple of holes, put a clamp through them (the size of which depends on the size of the tool that is planned to be placed in it), tightened it on the back of the board and inserted the tool. It's that simple!

So brain you can store a soldering iron, a drill and much more! If you plan to place a heavier tool like this (for example, a drill), then it will be more expedient to use a metal clamp.

With the help of "clamp holders" I have stored:

  • large metal tweezers (because it does not "stick" to the magnet)
  • small plastic tweezers.

Step 3: What about the radiator?

This idea came to me in November 2015 and I implemented it to accommodate my plastic tweezers by attaching this holder directly to the wall above the Magnetic Board. I attached the heatsink with double-sided tape so that the fins were vertical and I hung tweezers on top of them, with some of the fins acting as spacers!

I "got" this radiator from my game console, about which there is even a whole brain leadership.
On my "radiator" holder are located:

  • 5 different plastic ESD tweezers.

Step 4: use magnets!

I suppose you've seen my Ultimate Magnetic Pegboard, if not, I suggest you check it out!

And in my new board for storing the instrument, I also used magnets, "mined" from the speakers, which I glued to it with hot glue. This type of holders is quite easy to make, you just need to understand in what place brainstocks each tool will be placed.

My "magnetic" holders store:

  • large roughing plane
  • small roughing plane
  • large needle nose pliers
  • wire cutters
  • flat needle nose pliers
  • curved needle nose pliers
  • regular needle nose pliers
  • carpentry punch.

Step 5: don't forget about screw-in straight hooks

Of the screw-in hooks, I prefer those bent at a right angle, they better hold a massive tool, for example, the large rasp with a massive handle shown in the photo, but even its size does not help the rounded hooks to hold the rasp.

But with the help of straight hooks your instrument is very easy to store, try this brainworm and find out what it is about!

This is not visible in the photo, but I also screwed in the hooks from below, as "locks" to prevent the saw from falling out, no matter what.

My hook holders store:

  • brushes (no, I do not paint, they serve me for another)
  • large rasp
  • large file
  • hacksaw
  • and my microscope- homemade .

Step 6: and the foam comes in handy

Believe it or not, I used Styrofoam to store the drills. It is very soft, lightweight and easy to cut, which makes it perfect for storing small tools such as drills, needle files, small screwdrivers, pencils, etc.!

A similar storage device can be made of wood, while the foam will serve as a good material for such a prototype. crafts.

Step 7: And of course small shelves!

The device called "French Plank" is certainly "cool", but to my regret, I have no way to do this.

Therefore, I decided to attach the board to the storage board at a 90 degree angle using small corners.

My "mini-shelf" contains:

  • my homemade magnetic silicone vise pads (because I decided not to use them on the vise anymore)
  • two different whetstones
  • nail clippers (although it may be better to use metal scissors for this purpose)
  • credit card sized multitool
  • flashlight in the form of a phone.

Step 8: Even a toilet paper roll has a use!

I have to admit, the idea is really strange ...

I cut a hole in the paper roll sleeve, then cut it in half and attached it to the board.
I now use this device only for storing my mallet- homemade, it weighs little and the "paper" holder only slightly bends. Obviously, this method will not work for a heavier instrument ...

Step 9: Another Mini Shelf, But With Holes

To create this brain-holder I was inspired by one recently.

In winter, doing carpentry in an unheated workshop is below average pleasure. But my hands itch. Therefore, I decided to implement a weekend project associated with a rougher job - to install a toolbar next to the workbench.

Place for the future panel:

This task can be solved using perforated panels (made of sheet metal or HDF) or economy panels (MDF with grooves along the entire length). On thematic forums, you can often find threads in which people brag about their workshops equipped with such panels. It looks really impressive.

But this option is not for everyone. Despite the fact that the panels themselves are not cheap, you also need to buy suspensions and hooks, the total cost of which will many times exceed the cost of the panel itself. In addition, the usability of hooks that do not have a rigid fixation raises questions. And it is not clear how to fix some homemade plywood suspension on such a panel?

Let me give you an example.
Do you see a red gas wrench with a narrow hole in the handle in the photo? If you accidentally push it up a little when removing it, the hook may jump off the panel. Or the hook will need to be fixed. A trifle, of course, but you have to divert time (even if only for a split second), attention and the other hand, which is likely to be busy. Of course, you can try to remove the gas key carefully so that it does not catch on anything, but does this hook require too much attention to itself?
The same will most likely happen when trying to remove the red and blue handled pliers. Because the rubber grips will hook into the bracket like a Morse taper.
Although, of course, I could be wrong and my doubts are in vain.
One more detail - suspensions for just a pair of pliers and a pair of hammers will cost almost 500 rubles. As they say, count it.


I am for simple and reliable solutions. Therefore, it was decided to use a sheet of ordinary 15 mm plywood as a panel. As suspensions and hooks, you can use ordinary screws of various lengths at the price of two kopecks per kilogram, which will not go anywhere without your persistent desire. The same self-tapping screws can be used to fix any homemade suspension. At the same time, the length of the part of the self-tapping screw sticking out of the panel can be accurately adjusted in place by screwing the self-tapping screw into the plywood at least through and through. But for this, there must be a gap between the plywood and the wall.

The gap can be made using plastic washers for perforated panels. But it is safer to install the panel on a specially welded frame. This will level the unevenness of the wall, add rigidity to the entire structure and allow you to set a gap of any size.
Of course, this method is also not free and not so glamorous, but it is much more practical.

Few people are interested in the welding process. The result is important. The frame is welded from my favorite fiftieth corner. All mounting holes are 8 mm.
Align the frame on a sheet of plywood and mark the attachment points.

The holes in the plywood are a couple of millimeters wider than in the frame to compensate for minor inaccuracies.

I painted the frame with automotive paint from a spray can. Color - Snow Queen (with metallic). The instructions say that paint must be applied at an ambient temperature of at least +15. However, there is no heating in the workshop and I had to paint at -1. This did not affect the quality of the coating. Most likely, the only difference is the drying time.

The frame is fixed to the wall with eight 8x80 dowels. The fact is that the inter-garage wall, on which the panel is planned to be installed, is only half a brick thick. By design, a large number of attachment points should evenly distribute the load. In addition, some of the dowels were caught between the bricks, so their reliability is lower.

Now, looking at the finished result, I understand that it was possible to do with half the dowels. But here it is better to overdo it than not to miss it.

The plywood sheet is attached to the frame with thirteen 8x45 anchors.

Anchors are great for this task. To tighten a regular nut with a bolt, you need access to both the nut and the bolt. But when the frame is already fixed to the wall, such access is not possible (especially when attaching the plywood to the middle crossbar of the frame). But the anchor requires access only from one front side.

I can't even imagine what could go wrong. The only trouble that can theoretically happen with such a connection is if the nut and the edge of the hole in the corner bite the anchor sleeve. But this is unlikely. Therefore, such a connection seems to me to be very reliable.

When the panel is ready, you can start placing the tool. The first in line is the sledgehammer. Having no place of her own, she constantly got in the way. At the same time, the prospect of using it in my workshop is vague. But you can't throw it away either. The tool is! Therefore, I quickly welded a special bracket for her,

ennobled it all with spray paint

and placed it in the farthest corner under the ceiling. Finally, I will stop stumbling over it and, if necessary, it is always available.
A robust frame and a large number of attachment points allow you not to worry about the permissible panel load.

The area of ​​the panel turned out to be a little more than a square meter - not small and there is some margin.

I installed the same toolbars in my garage at my dacha a few years ago. I used exactly the same anchors. The idea to cook a frame for a panel was born exactly there - this is due to the construction of the walls. But the idea stuck.
All these years, the panels are simply not overjoyed. At the dacha, I do not use the tool so often, so something is forgotten. Sometimes it was easier to buy a new instrument than to find an old one in the rubble. Therefore, I have several building levels, several plumb lines, gas keys, axes and more. On the farm, of course, everything will come in handy. But now I always know for sure and will not forget what instrument I have, how much and where it is. The first few weeks you need to get used to the fact that every thing should have its own place. And when it becomes a habit, work in the workshop ceases to be a constant search for the right tool and stumbling over the unnecessary.
In short, I recommend it.

The whole work took one and a half days off. It was possible to keep within one, but without painting (I had to take a break to dry the paint). Overall, I am happy with the result.

First of all, you need to immediately clean up your garage, remove all unnecessary, all the garbage - do not be Plyushkin, who collected all the necessary and unnecessary. After that, install the large equipment and workbenches that you will use in your work. Small tools can be stored in separate drawers or on hooks hammered into the wall. By the way, such storage is very convenient, since you will always see what tool you have, and you will significantly save space. If you wish, you can hang the tool according to its functional purpose. It is advisable to store dowels and self-tapping screws in separate boxes, picking them up by size.

Many people use special tool trolleys to keep everything you need close at hand. With the help of a trolley, it is also possible to equip a mobile workstation in cases where the main work will be carried out outside the walls of the workshop. If you decide to make a workshop not only for yourself, but also for others, offering repair services, it is advisable to take care of the possibility of connecting various equipment, such as, for example, for which it is necessary to think over the location of the sockets. In some cases, setting up a workshop means creating a hood, especially if you are working with wood. Or, if you don't have such an opportunity, just get a powerful vacuum cleaner.

But it is also important that you think in advance which equipment and where will be located. In general, you can sketch out a simple layout of the equipment - so it will visually be easier for you to perceive the information. By improperly organizing the free space in the workshop, you will achieve a sharp decrease in the efficiency and effectiveness of your work. Just calculate what area will be the most suitable for you for a workplace, how much space is needed to place the tool.

Also, when equipping the workshop, do not forget about the winter period - you will need a device to heat the room, otherwise the work can be postponed for this time. To do this, you can use modern insulation materials and, in addition, install an electric heater. By the way, tools will be stored better in a warm room, since humidity and low temperatures can lead to a deterioration in their properties.

Advice: do not forget about the first-aid kit, which must contain cotton wool, bandage, brilliant green and antiseptics necessary for first aid.
