What is door trim. Door platband: types, materials, self-installation

Previously, there was not a large selection of platbands, so the question of which platbands to choose was not even raised. But today manufacturers offer a wide range of choices for each specific situation.

Types of door trims

Platbands for interior or entrance doors can be divided into structural or decorative options (depending on the purpose they serve).

  • Constructive platbands are placed on door frames to close the gap between the door frame and the wall;
  • Decorative options create a visual transition between door and wall.

Modern platbands can be called a transition from a door frame to a wall; they often help hide uneven walls.

Wooden platbands

Once upon a time, wooden products were the only option, but even with the possibilities of modern choice, they have not lost their popularity. The pluses include the versatility of the product, because it fits any type.

Also, wooden platbands have the ability to restore: they can be putty and painted, varnished.

MDF platbands

These platbands differ in the way they are covered. The most common door and window trims in this category are laminated on paper. It is undesirable to wash such products with water, you should not even wash the floors next to them.

The veneer finish is more versatile, and the appearance of the product practically does not differ from the wooden options.

Low water resistance is the main disadvantage of such platbands.

Plastic platbands

This option has appeared relatively recently, but every year it is gaining momentum in popularity. This is because the price is quite low, and there is also a good indicator of moisture resistance.

Ceramic platbands

Experts attribute this type not so much to decorative platbands on the door, but to stylization under the masonry of the doorway.

These are the main types of door trims, which experts advise to buy at the same time as the door. When choosing, you need to pay attention not only to the price and appearance, but also to the speed and ease of fastening, reliability.

Telescopic door trims

Telescopic platbands differ from conventional versions in their shape. They have a complex figured configuration, the products themselves are semicircular. This form is superimposed on some features on how to put the platbands on the door.

Such products have a number of advantages.

Outwardly, such a platband is similar to a regular one, but it has a protrusion for connection with additional elements and a door frame. The use of telescopic options is justified especially in cases where the door frame is several centimeters narrower than the thickness of the wall.

A special protrusion allows the casing to fit tightly into the longitudinal grooves at the ends of the door frame.

The cost of platbands on doors in this category does not differ much from traditional options. But the correct installation allows you to make the product invisible.

Installation of platbands on the door

The procedure for performing work on installing platbands on the door is as follows:

1. It is necessary to measure the length of the vertical bar with maximum accuracy (the bar is installed next to the hinges). The distance that results from the indentation must be added to the total length.

The point that will be obtained as a result of measurements will be the beginning of the line. Along it, the excess must be cut off from the workpiece (at an angle of forty-five degrees).

2. To make the opposite platband of the correct size, measurements are taken in the same way. It is not always possible to buy door trims to the ideal size; more often you have to adjust the dimensions for a specific situation.

It is not a fact that the distance from both sides from the floor to the desired point will be equal.

3. Saw the planks and nail them with two nails: fix one at the base, and the second about a meter later.

4. If the upper ends of the vertical platbands have not yet been fixed, a blank for the upper strip can be placed under them. Mark points on it and saw off exactly at an angle of 45 degrees.

5. Fix all three components.

The base of the door casings, as a rule, rests against the floor. Sometimes it is necessary to place a special bedside table under the door frame. The pins or nails on which the platbands are attached are located at an arbitrary step.

There is a difference in how to attach the platbands to the door if it is a telescopic version of the product. tried, and the installation method will be quite simple.

Platbands have a special ledge, which is located at an angle of 90 degrees to the working plane. When cutting, use a high-speed rotary table cutter.

Correctly installed door trims allow you to emphasize the beauty of this important interior detail!

After installing the door, the overall appearance is a sad sight. Numerous cracks, chips and protruding wires cannot be hidden in the wall. Defects can be eliminated only with the help of strips that will close the gap between the box and the wall. It is quite easy to choose door trims due to the large assortment on sale.

But in order to choose the best option, you need to know what shape and material of the door frame is suitable in a particular case. Such a small element as door trims will give the structure a complete look, and the door itself will be attractive and expressive.

In most cases, door trims come complete with door leaves. This type of product has a standard width of an interior door casing - 7 cm, thickness - 1.2 cm, height - from 190 to 235 cm.

For the finishing of a single-leaf door, 5 elements are required, and for a double-leaf door - 6. Framing the opening on one side only is performed using 2.5 strips. It is not necessary for the width of the interior door trim to be of standard dimensions. A wide range of products will allow you to choose the perfect option.

It is only important to follow the general recommendations of specialists. A narrow platband is not suitable for massive doors, because such a combination looks ridiculous. A wide platband on a narrow and small door will look no less silly. That is why the dimensions of the platbands on the door must correspond to the parameters of the door leaf.

Views

The appearance of the interior door largely depends on the design of the casters, which set the accents in the interior. The correct choice of these elements will allow you to disguise the disadvantages of the product and emphasize its merits. Before proceeding with the choice of planks, you need to decide on their type. Beautiful platbands will set the right tone for the whole room.

Today, the most popular are the following platbands for interior doors:

  • Straight and flat. The bar has a rectangular cross-section.
  • Curly. Refined products with decorative elements, characterized by a chic appearance.
  • Rounded. Volumetric strips with an oval section.

Increasingly, curly door frames are used to decorate openings, or, as they are also called, carved door frames. Even in interiors with a strict design, decorative door trims look harmonious and beautiful.

By internal structure there are the following types of door trims:

  • platband with cable channel;
  • simple or monolithic.

And they also differ in fastening method and there are:

  • telescopic, with fastening in the form of "thorn-groove";
  • invoices, which are installed using nails or special fasteners.

Wooden

The most popular and demanded is wood door trim, despite its high cost. This is due to the numerous advantages of this type of product. The wooden door frame is distinguished by its environmental friendliness and durability. It can be made from different breeds. In most cases it is pine.

Subject to correct installation, such platbands will last a very long time and retain their attractive appearance. A big plus of these slats lies in their versatility, because they fit doors made of different materials and any configuration. The main disadvantage of wooden products is that they change their appearance over time due to the influence of various unfavorable factors. But this can be easily eliminated by carrying out restoration work. The wooden casing is attached with glue or regular nails without caps.

MDF

Platbands made of MDF are much cheaper in comparison with wooden structures, while they are not inferior to them either in quality or in external characteristics. Some experts claim that these products are even superior in quality to wooden planks. They argue that the surface is covered with a special protective film, therefore it is more resistant to moisture.

But do not forget that the base of the material is also made of wood, so it is better to use such strips for installation in rooms with low humidity levels. Most of all they are suitable for living rooms and bedrooms, and for a bath it is worth choosing products from a more durable material.

Plastic

The most practical and durable material for door trims. Even after many years, such elements perfectly retain their original appearance. They are lightweight and unpretentious to care for. Mold will not form on the plastic. Due to their high technical characteristics, these products can be installed even outdoors, where they will be constantly exposed to sunlight and temperature extremes. It is best to use glue for installation, because screws or nails can damage the plastic trims.

Metallic

The strongest and most durable metal structures. In most cases, a steel or aluminum trim is on sale. Such products have an original appearance and are not suitable for all styles. They are resistant to moisture, temperature extremes and other negative factors.

Long-term intensive use practically does not affect their appearance and technical characteristics. Platbands made of metal are used for finishing entrance doors, which provides additional strength to the door frame.

Gypsum

The original and beautiful plaster moldings are used to decorate interiors in the medieval style. In order for all the details to be in harmony with each other, unusual plaster elements are used for door decoration in such rooms. They are more fragile than wood and metal structures, but the chic appearance makes up for this shortcoming.

By decorating the house with plaster cornices, you can make even the most discreet interior more attractive. Interesting decorative elements are a real masterpiece, they attract attention and set the right tone for the whole room.

Ceramic

In interiors with stone cladding, ceramic door frames are installed. Original products are in less demand than metal ones, because there are restrictions for their use. In most cases, these planks are installed in bathrooms and kitchens. But when choosing, you need to consider compatibility with other interior elements.

Polyurethane

Polyurethane trims are not very popular. But they have every chance of replacing finishing from other materials., Due to their beauty, long service life and ease of maintenance.

Telescopic

This type of platbands for interior doors received this name due to the peculiarity of the fastening method. They look like a curved bar along their entire length. They are characterized by quick and easy installation. They are fastened with special grooves. Perfectly mask the joint, there are no traces of installation.

Mounting features

The service life and appearance of the platband largely depends on how correctly the doorway trim was installed. In order for it to serve as long as possible, you need to know the installation rules.

Telescopic platbands are the easiest to install, they snap into special grooves. Platbands on doors made of mdf, wood, ceramics and plastic have their own characteristics that must be taken into account during installation.

Door trims can be done at different angles. The most common and universal is the butt joint at an angle of 45 °. This popularity is due to its beautiful appearance and the ability to hide the ends of the cut. At an angle of 90 °, the ends can be positioned horizontally or vertically. This fastening is mainly used for telescopic platbands.

To fix the planks, special studs up to two cm long are used with or without a very small cap. In this way, most often wooden door trims are attached and made of MDF. Professional installers use a pneumatic gun.

Another common installation method is liquid glue. This is how plastic door trims and other types can be attached.

For cutting, special electric saws are used, which provide the most even and beautiful cut, without roughness and chips. In this case, at any angle of attachment, the finish will have a gorgeous look. In the absence of such a saw, cutting can be performed using a miter box.

Before the installation itself, you must carefully prepare the surface to which they will be attached. For this purpose, remove excess foam and mark the place of attachment of the elements. During installation, it is necessary to correctly install the extensions so that their corners coincide with the corners of the casing.

It is possible to increase the density of adhesion of the strip to the wall using polyurethane foam. It is applied to the entire surface of the platbands from the reverse side, kept for 3-4 minutes and fixed to the wall. If the foam has come out, after it has completely dried, it is carefully cut off with a knife, and the gap is sealed with a sealant. But if all the recommendations for application were followed, then this will not happen.

After the installation of the cashing of the interior doors has been carried out, it is necessary to check that nothing interferes with the opening and closing of the doors.

Back in the days of the inimitable Coco Chanel (using the example of her famous jackets), the world learned that a well-chosen edging can turn a boring thing into an example of sophistication and style. This technique is still used not only by clothing creators, but also by interior designers. You've noticed how carefully the experts select the baguettes, skirting boards and, of course, door trims. If the magic of transforming door leaves with the help of platbands has not yet obeyed you, be sure to read this article to the end.

What is door trim

Door trims are strips that frame the door leaf. Initially, they are designed to hide the technological gap between the door frame and the wall, as well as to soften the transition between them. But in terms of design, platbands play a very important role, often highlighting the important features of the chosen interior style.

Photo gallery: platbands in different interior styles

In the Baroque, platbands, like other interior elements, must be works of art. The supporters of the contemporary style strive for simplicity, but you should not give up the modest crown The loft welcomes dark platbands of a simple form, but light milling will not be superfluous. Platbands can serve as one of the main components of the festive atmosphere of the room Simple smooth trims to match the walls and doors make the doors appear hidden

Modern platbands can be complemented by decorative corners and crowns that replace the standard top strip. This decor is usually used in a palace or classic style and looks especially impressive in white.

When choosing a suitable product, you should pay attention to:

  • width of the strip. It should be wide enough to completely cover the gap between the box and the wall, especially if the gap is uneven. The maximum width is taken into account only if the door is located very close to the corner of the room, in such cases it is worth taking a narrow platband;
  • material. Traditionally, it is selected the same as at the door, and is provided by manufacturers in the same collection, but if you wish, you can deviate from the rules. The main thing is not to pick up a plastic or other cheap platband for an expensive door. Even if it looks more spectacular new, then after a couple of years the difference in the wear resistance of the materials will be striking;
  • installation method. If you plan to install platbands yourself, choose lightweight models that can be glued, or telescopic platbands. Experienced craftsmen will cope with any kind;
  • design. Smooth platbands will suit the yard in any interior, but they are too boring for the highlight of the room. You can fix the situation with a custom color or choose an option with a more interesting profile.

I, like many others, have always been afraid of platbands of non-standard colors and even limited my bold fantasies about door edging to white, black, or at least silver. But after one of the construction programs, she decided to paint the platbands in bright turquoise, linking them at the same time with the ceiling molding. It's amazing how much the white and purple bathroom has become more interesting and brighter after such an upgrade, and guests are always terribly surprised. At the same time, the reactions are usually positive, even among inveterate lovers of the classics. It seems to me that this happened because the trims and baguettes are of medium width (turquoise is dosed) and they are tied together with towels (it looks more harmonious). I have been enjoying this effect for over a year now and have never regretted this decision. So if you also have wooden platbands at home, you can paste over the perimeter with masking tape and radically transform them without even removing them. Worst than you risk it, you have to repaint them back.

Varieties of door trims

If the length of the platband is limited by the dimensions of the door, then the width, texture and material can be practically any. In modern interior design, it is not even necessary to match the color of the door leaf and platbands, the main thing is that the latter go well with the skirting boards.

The tandem of skirting boards and platbands, used in contrast to the door leaf, looks very impressive and unusual

Classification by type of material

On sale you can find:

  • wooden door trims are the most standard and familiar material. They are made, as a rule, of a spliced solid to prevent the possibility of the bar twisting or cracking. Among the advantages: safety for health, exact match in tone and texture with wooden doors, low cost, variety of patterns, the possibility of self-repair and repainting. The disadvantages are familiar to everyone - sensitivity to humidity and temperature extremes, the likelihood of chips and dents on impact. In total: wooden platbands are ideal in combination with a wooden door when installed in a room with a stable microclimate;

    In a totally wooden interior, only the same platbands are appropriate

    Wooden platbands will help to give a more high-profile look to the MDF door, you only need to tint the wood in a similar shade.

  • plastic trims made of polyurethane (PU) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are usually installed on doors made of the same material. Such a kit is not afraid of moisture ingress, interferes with the spread of mold, can be equipped with cable channels for laying wires, and can have a variety of color variations. Among the disadvantages are modest appearance, sensitivity to high temperatures and ultraviolet light, low resistance to scratches and the possibility of emission of harmful substances when heated. Ideally, plastic trims should be used together with entrance doors, so they will show their best qualities to the maximum;

    Patterned plastic trims can look very nice in a picture, but their actual appearance is usually disappointing. Therefore, if you liked any option, try to find it in a construction hypermarket and attach it to doors similar to yours. So you can visually assess how they fit together.

    Due to the honeycomb structure of plastic platbands, they should not be installed in places with a high risk of impact.

  • MDF / HDF - the traditional option for MDF doors. They are lightweight and easy to install, optimally repeat the shade and texture of the canvas, and are often supplied with decor in the same style. One of the main disadvantages is the delamination of the decorative coating at the cuts, which reduces the useful life of the product. The most economical are MDF platbands with a film coating, while HDF products veneered with natural wood are considered the best. Now it is one of the most popular types of platbands, due to the popularity of MDF doors;

    Modern methods of imitating wood are so convincing that mounted MDF platbands are often difficult to distinguish from wood

  • plaster door trims are used only in rooms where there are already a lot of ceiling and wall moldings. Surrounded by such decor, wooden and even more so MDF platbands would seem too alien. Plaster products are very beautiful, they can be made seamless, easy to order in an individual design and easy to tint in any color. But do not forget about the drawbacks: installation can only be entrusted to a specialist, installation is impossible after gluing the wallpaper, the material crumbles from impacts, and restoration requires appropriate skills;

    Plaster portals are often fitted with beautiful corner pieces

  • ceramic door trims are produced specifically for bathrooms, toilets and swimming pools by ceramic tile manufacturers. In such an environment, they look the most harmonious and appropriate, and their service life is no less than that of the rest of the cladding. Platbands made of other materials in such conditions become unusable an order of magnitude faster and often introduce dissonance into the design. At the same time, do not forget that ceramic platbands are more expensive than ordinary ones, their length is always less than the width of the door and they also weigh a lot. Installation of planks can only be entrusted to an experienced tiler, as a beginner simply cannot lay narrow long strips evenly. But if durability is a priority, then ceramic platbands will suit you better than others;

    What has been said about ceramic platbands can be repeated with regard to products made of natural or artificial stone. Their scope of use is limited, but if executed correctly, such a solution looks very impressive.

    The manufacturers made sure that the arched opening could be framed with ceramic platbands.

  • aluminum platbands are a logical addition for doors in aluminum profiles, usually glass ones, with or without a layout. Due to the variety of shapes and shades, such stripes look great not only in offices, but also in modern interiors, especially in eclecticism. Models in gold and bronze look very impressive.

    Aluminum platbands are perfectly combined with the texture of art concrete

In addition to these, there are also coated metal trims, but they are usually sold complete with an entrance door and are not used elsewhere.

Differences in profile shape

When choosing a frame for a door, most consumers pay attention to the texture of the front side of the strip. Depending on this parameter, the following types of platbands are distinguished:

  • straight straight - in section they look like a rectangle with slightly rounded corners and do not have bulges on the front. This is a popular option that, due to its neutrality, fits into any interior. But it looks best in modern minimalism and contemporary. At the top, such strips are most often joined at a right angle, but if desired, they can be cut down at 45 o. They are the easiest to manufacture, therefore they are inexpensive and are often made with different coatings;

    In an interior with an abundance of precise straight lines, smooth platbands look better than others.

  • radius - when looking at the end, they resemble a semi-arch, but from other sides this rounding is not too noticeable. Such models require a little more accuracy when joining corners and are always filed at 45 °, a joint at a right angle turns out to be ugly. Radius strips are made from all the materials described above and are available in most popular shades, including those with wood textures. Otherwise, they are quite neutral and get along well with all interior styles;

    Radius platbands (in the middle) have a more interesting shape than flat (left) and milled (right), but they are more difficult to join in the corners

  • milled - these are planks with longitudinal stripes of different widths, resembling ceiling moldings in style. They are more decorative than radius ones, but due to their wide distribution, they do not produce a particular effect. It is these platbands that are installed with wooden doors, so that when installing economical canvases, this stereotype can be used;

    Even a slight difference in the thickness of the plank makes the platband more decorative.

  • carved - most often found in classical and palace interiors, but with their help you can make a more elegant and modern interior or a romantic nursery. Elite versions of door frames are made of wood and decorated with intricate images of flowers, leaves, and sometimes animals. But since such decor is not available to everyone, there are analogues from MDF on sale. They have a simpler and less deep relief, but worthy options can be selected from them;

    Only no less luxurious platbands with exclusive carvings will fit a luxurious door.

  • arched - unlike straight slats, they are designed to frame semicircular openings. Their size is always clearly tied to the radius / diameter of the arch, so they are not as versatile. If you want to make an arch with such a spectacular frame at home, there is a reason to first buy a platband and adjust the opening taking into account its size.

    To order today, you can make beautiful platbands for arches of any shape

Photos of old patterned window frames, so popular lately, did not pass me by either. Looking through these masterpieces of ancient masters, I was inspired to decorate a door in a child's daughter. But since there were no woodcarvers in the family and the environment, they had to be cunning. With the help of a friend, I created a drawing of the desired pattern and ordered a plywood cutting with a CNC machine, then I painted it myself and emphasized the curves with a pearl patina. It turned out, of course, not a copy, but as a stylization it looks very good. She did not remove the existing platbands, she just glued the patterned ones around the perimeter and a fabulous portal came out. So to everyone who has no carpentry skills to keep up with imagination, I advise you not to be content with purchased platbands, but boldly attach your crazy hands to them. After all, in the worst case, you just get a slightly unpleasant, but still rewarding experience.

Modern analogues of carved platbands look, although more modest than traditional ones, but just as charming.

Mounting methods

Until recently, there was only one way to securely fix the platband - to nail it through with small studs. Due to the absence of a hat, they are almost invisible on light-colored products, but the dark ones had to be putty and tinted (of course, if it was necessary to achieve the perfect look) or get rid of blemishes with the help of furniture wax. This method is suitable for wooden platbands, but it is ridiculous to use it with plastic ones.

The advantage of nailing is the added strength of the structure as the nails go deep into the box

Therefore, telescopic, or L-shaped (in section), platbands are now popular. They have a special spike that snaps into the groove prepared for it in the door frame. There are no visible fasteners on the surface; when gluing wallpaper, such a platband can be easily removed and then clicked again. But it can only be used in a set with special boxes. Such kits are made for doors made of MDF and plastic, they cannot be used with wooden panels.

Telescopic platbands snap into a special groove on the door frame, no additional fasteners are required

Some manufacturers also offer fastening clips that fix on the wall with one side and hold the trim on the other. Depending on the material of the strap, plastic or metal clips are selected.

If you have no experience with such retainers, ask the seller for advice or provide you with the instructions on paper that usually come with the package.

The last popular method of fastening platbands is adhesive bonding. Heavy stone and ceramic strips are mounted on tile adhesive, and liquid nails are enough to hold lightweight products made of polyurethane foam.

Applying an adhesive connection, it is worth temporarily fixing the platband with clamps

Manufacturing of door platbands

Before deciding to manufacture something, you should familiarize yourself with the ready-made analogs that the industry offers or are made by experienced craftsmen. In the case of platbands, you should pay attention to the width. It cannot be less than 4 cm, since the minimum technological gap between the box and the wall is 3 cm.The maximum is limited only by aesthetic considerations - there is no point in choosing a very wide edging for a narrow door, as it will look disproportionate (like a too wide-shouldered jacket on a teenager ). On the other hand, if the rest of the doors in the same room with a wide casing look good, it is better to choose the same edging for all doors. Manufacturers usually offer platbands with a width of 7 to 11 cm, other sizes are already considered non-standard, therefore they are rare and cost more.

It is easier to give a complex profile to a wide casing than to a narrow one.

When the assortment of platbands does not satisfy, their prices, or you just want to bring a homemade zest to the house, the master has the question of choosing a material. MDF, metal and ceramics disappear immediately, since something worthy of attention can be made from them only in the factory. But you can experiment with wood or plywood at home, because almost every home craftsman now has a jigsaw for cutting, and if you wish, it is easy to rent or borrow from friends. And rulers, sandpaper and pencils will definitely be found in any household. It is even easier to experiment with plaster - when working with this material, you can do without special tools at all, a couple of home-made devices will be enough.

We make smooth platbands from wood

For experiments, you need to take well-dried boards from a solid or spliced (if you paint) an array of available rocks. Without skills, you should not even take up an oak, the lot of a beginner is pine, spruce, birch.

For the manufacture of the simplest platbands, you should:

  1. Cut planks of the required width from the boards using a jigsaw.

    When cutting with a jigsaw, it is convenient to navigate by continuous markings or use a side stop

  2. Sand the strips with sandpaper by hand or with a sander.

    For best results, sanding should be repeated with sandpaper of varying grain size.

  3. Round off corners to prevent wood cracking with sandpaper or a hand router.

    If, after processing with a router, a noticeable step remains, it can be removed with sandpaper

The procedure is simple, but when considering the prices for wooden platbands, it is not always advisable. Usually, it is worth making such products yourself only when you need wide strips that are not on sale.

DIY textured plaster casings

For those who have never worked with plaster, the technology of making long, narrow planks may seem complicated, but if desired, almost any beginner can master it. Just keep in mind that this job is messy and will require a separate room.

Let's get started:

  1. Think of how your platband will look in section or copy a picture from the network. Print or draw it at the desired size.

    You can take the industrial version as a basis and adjust it to fit your needs

  2. Find a piece of dense plastic and cut a recess in it that matches the shape of the future casing. With the tools and skills, such a scraper can be made from tin.

    It is better to choose the size of the scraper so that it is convenient for you to hold it.

  3. To make it easier to constantly hold the scraper strictly at right angles to the surface, you can make a frame for it.

    The main secret of the device lies in the chosen quarter, which helps to guide the hand at the same distance from the edge of the table.

  4. Cover the work surface with plastic film to prevent plaster from sticking to it. It is convenient to work on a sheet of film faced plywood or an old kitchen table; it is not necessary to cover their smooth surface. Lay a strip of medical bandage or a special reinforcing mesh made of thin thread on the prepared surface and secure them along the edges with double-sided tape.

    Wide casing can be reinforced with two or three strips

  5. Stir the gypsum with water and a small amount of PVA glue until it becomes a liquid slurry and pour it onto the work surface along the long edge. For orientation, you can mark the border with masking tape or pull on the thread.

    In one or two times, you can select the optimal amount of gypsum so that the remains do not dry out while working on the product.

  6. Cover the liquid strip with a piece of medical bandage, it is needed for additional reinforcement of the product.

    If the strip is slightly wrinkled or skewed, it will not have much effect on the result.

  7. Cover the strip of gypsum with another layer and begin to remove the excess with a scraper. At the end point, it is better to substitute a tray into which the leftovers will be dumped. You need to make several passes to get the texture clean. Keep in mind that the gypsum expands slightly as it dries.

    It is advisable to carry out the scraper in the same direction each time.

  8. If shells remain on the strip, add a little fresh liquid solution to the dried gypsum and scrub the scraper several more times. To obtain a smooth surface, you must first wet the scraper. At the end, you need to trim the ends of the product with a spatula.

    The final pass will result in a smooth, even surface.

In this way, you can make other moldings for the interior: baguettes, moldings, skirting boards. Remember that the product needs to be dried for 1-2 days before use, depending on its thickness.

Production of patterned additional elements

If simple straight slats aren't worthy of your doors, you can experiment with carved ones. The advantage is that you can create your own pattern and a completely exclusive piece. But you have to spend a lot of time and work with more or less soft material. Not everyone can cut a pattern in a thick wooden board with high quality, so beginners turn their eyes to plywood and extruded polystyrene foam. The first guarantees the environmental friendliness of the platbands, but the second will help to achieve a more expressive relief due to its thickness. After cutting and installation, both materials will need to be coated with a protective agent - water-based paint or stain and varnish (suitable only for plywood).

But the manufacturing technology is similar:

  1. Find or come up with your report (a fragment of a drawing that will be repeated along the entire length of the casing), draw it on paper and cut it out. When making a drawing, you need to be careful; if necessary, use aids. For example, curls are convenient to draw using caps of different sizes. Remember that a pattern that is too thin will make it difficult for you to cut and edit.

    When working with long narrow strips, it is more convenient to use fiberglass in a spool than sheet material

If you plan to attach the platbands with glue, they should be painted before installation. When using carnations, it is better to apply the finishing coat of paint after fixing the platbands to the wall. This method is best suited for making crowns above the door, since with this arrangement, the patterned decor is minimally traumatized and lasts longer.

Installation of door platbands

The main secret of a high-quality installation of door trims is to use the rule "measure seven times - cut once" in time. Indeed, in the corners of the planks should be beautifully docked and leave no gaps. It will be easiest for beginners to work with smooth straight trims, since they do not have to follow the pattern joining.

When using corner pieces at the joints, the cutoff points can be selected during a rough assembly

In addition, the field measurement method is best suited for novice craftsmen. That is, you do not need to measure the height of the door, mark it on the bar and then cut it off. Instead, try placing the plank in place and marking the correct height on it. It is best to do this with an assistant or temporarily attach the strips to double-sided tape to roughly fold all three elements and check how they fit.

The exact position of the straight undercut of the plank can be found by attaching all the trim elements in place

If a joint is planned at an angle of 90 °, you need to fix the two verticals correctly and attach the horizontal part as a ruler. This will create the mark at the correct height - the height of the box plus the width of the bar. Further, it is easy to determine the length of the horizontal bar, for which it is enough to attach the edge to the left stand and mark the place of intersection with the right. When marking, keep in mind that the cutting blade has its own thickness, so as not to get a gap as a result..

To get an accurate cut at 45 degrees, you need to build a square diagonal from the lower left corner to the upper right

Docking under 45 ° is usually done using a miter box, but, unaccustomed, it will interfere more than help. Therefore, it is also worth using the visual method. Assemble the edging as in the previous case, but now pay attention to the diagonal of the square obtained by overlapping two planks. To begin with, you can make marks on the top and trim it, and then just draw lines on the vertical planks like a stencil. Thus, you will quickly join the platbands and the cut corner will look exactly in the right direction.

When the platbands are correctly cut, it remains only to snap them into the grooves, glue, nail or fix in another way convenient for you.

Video: do-it-yourself installation of platbands on interior doors

How difficult is it to install platbands on the door and can you do it yourself if you have never encountered such work? In principle, the door casing, for a door made of plastic or metal wood, differs only in material, the technology is the same everywhere and further, you will find out: what kind of casing are, what is needed to install them, and most importantly, how to do it all yourself.

Door finishing is an important moment in the design of any room.

Before preparing a tool and buying accessories, let's figure out what kind of door trims exist in general.

Common materials

Wooden door trims are a classic finish, there are both budget models made of pine or linden, and elite species such as oak, beech or overseas wenge wood.

Working with wood is more difficult, since the material is alive, which means it is subject to temperature and humidity deformations. If you decide to give preference to this option, then keep in mind: the wood must be dry and, preferably, impregnated with an antiseptic.

No matter how beautiful the platband from a freshly sawn forest looks, after six months it may be led or impartial cracks will appear.

Natural wood is deservedly considered a classic.

The second and currently the most popular contender in our ranking is MDF. Door platbands almost 70% of consumers choose MDF. The material is completely environmentally friendly, because the massif is glued not due to synthetic additives, but due to the high content of natural glue of lignin in the wood.

The weak point of MDF is considered to be swelling in conditions of high humidity, but in order for the planks to deteriorate, the humidity must be really high, so the cladding cannot be mounted in the steam room or on the entrance doors from the street side. A kitchen and even a bathroom in a city apartment are quite suitable for installing MDF.

In the line of MDF planks, there are platbands pasted over with veneer (a thin cut of natural wood), this cladding is absolutely no different from high-quality wooden products.

MDF cladding is a good combination of the best price and high quality.

Now gone are the days when plastic products could be identified at a glance. Good plastic trims from the same MDF can only be distinguished by a specialist, and most importantly, the price of this product is quite affordable, plus it is much easier to install plastic with your own hands.

In addition, plastic is indifferent to any humidity, high-quality models tolerate temperature extremes and direct sunlight well. Perhaps the only place where it is not recommended to put plastic is a steam room, because such a ban is explained by the fact that many synthetic compounds begin to break down at temperatures above 70 ° C.

Plastic platbands have excellent appearance and high performance characteristics.

There is still metal cladding on the market. As a rule, metal is used only for outdoor installation, but this is a very narrow niche, because a platband on the front door is often not required, since its "duties" are performed by the bearing outer frame of a metal door, and nowadays there is practically no tree at the entrance.

A few words about the tool

In order to properly install any door trims, they need to be cut accurately, evenly and without chips, and for this it is advisable to have a miter saw on the bed, and the bed must be rotated and fixed at a certain angle.

Miter saw on bed.

If your plans do not include the purchase of trimming, then you can get by with a hacksaw for metal, but here you need a certain skill, since without experience it is very easy to make chips along the edge.

From the auxiliary tool you need:

  • Hammer;
  • Plumb line;
  • Level;
  • Roulette;
  • Pliers;
  • Pencil.

Cutting method with a miter box.

Of the materials you will need:

  • Special finishing studs with a shallow cap;
  • Glue "Liquid nails" or polyurethane foam, plus a gun under the tube;
  • Masking tape.

It is more convenient to apply the polyurethane foam with a pistol.

How to install platbands with your own hands

There are 2 ways to install such a cladding: oblique joining of planks at 45º and straight joining of planks at 90º. In addition, there are serious differences in the installation of wooden (MDF) platbands and plastic products, but let's talk about everything in turn.

Method number 1. Installation with undercut corners

This installation method is suitable for both flat or semicircular planks and curly platbands. The oblique cut organically fits into the overall interior of the door and such a cladding looks great.

Docking planks at an angle.

Whichever method you choose, work begins with trimming the edges of the planks, in other words, you need to cut a few millimeters from each edge. If you have a miter saw, then you can cut it in a package, all at once.

Trimming the edges of the platbands.

Polyurethane foam is usually blown out along the perimeter of the door frame, so you need to carefully cut it off, here it is more convenient to use a removable blade from the assembly knife.

We start the marking from the strip, which will be installed from the side of the door hinges. A couple of millimeters are left between the plank and the awnings so that when the hinge is opened, they do not rub against the platband.

Important: platbands are attached after the doors are installed, and the walls, ceilings and floors are finished, but before the skirting boards are installed. The planks should rest on the floor and not on the baseboard.

Fitting and marking the plank.

The mark is placed on the lower edge of the future cut. All other planks are marked in the same way. After marking, do not forget to number all the details.

If you have a miter saw, you need to turn the tool table at 45º, place the bar against the stop and cut.

Corner trimming by trimming.

If there is no trimming, then 45º can be marked with a square and a pencil. To do this, draw a transverse line from the previously marked point.

Cross markings at right angles.

It is even easier with the upper bar, where you apply it to the two side ones, as shown in the diagram below and mark it in fact. With this approach, errors and gaps in the corners are practically excluded, even if the angle is marked not quite correctly, that is, not at 45º, it will nevertheless converge perfectly.

There is a little trick here: first you need to nail both side strips onto 2 - 3 cloves, and then bring the top one under them and mark.

When everything is marked out and cut off, you can proceed to the installation. We will nail the platband to the door latch with nails, and to fix it on the wall, we will use mounting foam. To do this, simply put a strip of foam on the edge of the plank.

If you decide to glue the platbands only on liquid nails, then this composition has an interesting feature. First, the glue is applied to the strip, after which the strip is pressed against the base and immediately comes off. Then you need to wait about 5 minutes for the glue to wind a little and only after that you can “plant” it completely.

The top bar is attached first, and you need to nail it in the center. Then, when you start to install the side ones, you will have the opportunity to slightly adjust the top, if necessary. When the whole "constructor" is folded, you can finally fix the strips, the nails are hammered in with a step of 150-200 mm.

The final touch will be to secure the planks with studs from the end. To do this, slightly bend both planks from the wall and hammer in a carnation.

Fixing the platband in the corner.

If the corner does not come together exactly, then the gap can be covered with acrylic putty or special furniture wax to match the platband. Although the entry points of nails are almost invisible, many people are annoyed by this, so nails can also be covered up.

Method number 2. Docking strips at right angles

This method is justified only if you decide to install a curly capital on top. Then the first one is nailed or glued on the capital itself, and then you need to try on, cut and attach two side strips.

The upper capital will significantly improve the appearance of the door.

Often, those amateur craftsmen who do not want to bother with trimming corners at 45º, butt the planks at right angles. There is nothing wrong with that, but such a cladding does not look so impressive.

There are no special wisdom and secrets here. The only thing we can advise you is to direct the cuts of the two side planks up so that they are not visible, and insert the upper plank between the two side planks. As in the photo below.

A right angle docking will look better if the top bar is inserted between the side ones.

If you want to join the planks with rounded edges at right angles, then it is better to cut the upper plank at an angle directed inward, so that the cut edge lies on the rounding. In this case, the edge of the bar will be invisible.

Installation of plastic platbands

A high-quality plastic casing may not visually differ from natural wood.

The plastic structure consists of 2 parts: a base with mounting grooves is attached to the edge of the door, and then the front part of the casing is put on this base. In order to beautifully dock the front parts of the structure, there are special docking gaskets in the set.

Docking pads for plastic casing.

Plastic platbands are quite flexible and if the base is fixed on a curved wall, then it will go around irregularities and it will be problematic to put on the front part, therefore, first you need to align the walls around the doorway, and only then fix the plastic.

By the way, rigid planks, MDF or wood, can be mounted on curved walls. True, then you will need to putty the places where the bar leaves the wall. It looks, of course, very mediocre, but still better than the holes under the trims.

Often plastic platbands are chosen because there is a cable channel inside such a structure and you can hide the wiring in it. But there is a nuance here: do not try to hide a high-voltage cable in the casing, according to SNiP it is strictly forbidden. Only low-voltage cables, such as an antenna or communication, may be installed here.

Fastening the base with self-tapping screws.

As in previous cases, the strap is attached first from the hinge side. Usually, the carrier bar is fixed with self-tapping screws with plastic dowels, but no one bothers you to plant it, for example, on liquid nails.

The lower bearing strips need to be measured and trimmed very accurately, because any mistake at this stage will lead to the fact that your upper front plates may simply not converge. Plastic is mounted only with undercut at 45º, installation at right angles is not provided here.

After the side base is fixed, the front strip is put on it and the connecting gasket is inserted from above, then you can proceed to fastening the base under the upper casing.

When the entire structure is assembled and you are convinced that all the joints fit exactly and does not mow anything anywhere, you can start laying low-voltage cables inside the casing.

Laying the cable in the cable channel of the plastic casing.
