How to make thread curtains. Cotton curtains - muslin

As you know, curtains are designed to decorate windows, thereby protecting themselves from moonlight or daylight. But the curtains, which you will read about below, will surely surprise you and interest you, because curtains are threads created and used not only to limit the ingress of light, but also to divide the space into zones, therefore, they can be hung not only on windows, but and on the door or just in the middle of the room. These curtains look wonderful and original, with this you can delight guests and loved ones, people dear to you.

To make curtains - threads you will need:
1. Thread, you can also cut the fabric, for example, jeans or any other lightweight.
2. Adhesive tape. It can be either scotch tape or tape, which is used to collect garbage from clothes. In general, you can take what you like in your work, what will be convenient for you.
3. Satin ribbon. In color and tone, it should match and match the color of the thread.
4. Stapler with staples. It will be necessary to use it in order to fasten the adhesive tape with the already attached threads.
5. Scissors.
6. Needle and thread matching the color of the satin ribbon.
7. Ruler.

You can purchase all the necessary materials in a store, supermarket or through an online store, but also, to create curtains - threads, you can use those materials that will be at hand. So, after you collect all the materials, you can get to work, which, although monotonous, is interesting and exciting at the same time.
1. Measure the width of a window, door or opening with a ruler, this is necessary in order to calculate how many threads you will need. If you take special threads or threads that are intended for knitting, 8-10 threads are needed for every centimeter. If you take a fabric and cut it into not thin strips, they will need 3 - 5 pieces per centimeter. Also measure the length from top to floor or to windowsill.
2. Now you need to take the threads and, having measured the required length with a ruler, cut off, and then, leveling with the first, cut the required number of threads.

3. For convenience, the cut threads should be immediately attached to adhesive tape. This is also necessary so that they are less confused with each other.

4. After cutting and attaching the required number of threads to the adhesive tape, wrap the other half so that the two halves are stapled and glued. Next, fasten with a stapler as shown in the picture.

5. Take a satin ribbon wrapped around both sides and sew.

6. The next step that you will need to do is to hang ready-made curtains - threads on the place designated for them.

Filament curtains are not new. They were already popular several decades ago.

Now such models are back in fashion. Unique filament curtains with your own hands are absolutely not like traditional curtains, they are much lighter and weightless, and they look original, attracting attention to themselves. A feature of long muslin, in contrast to traditional curtains, is the unobstructed passage of warm air from the battery, so in winter you can leave the curtains in a free position.

Thread curtain

Fastening to the cornice

The shape of the thread curtains is presented in various variations, which differ in color, thread material, the presence of decorative accessories in the form of beads, rhinestones, bugles, beads. In general, there are the following guidelines for choosing a design option:

Curtains with your own hands look advantageous when decorating window openings in children's rooms, living rooms and bedrooms; You can add originality to finished products using decorations for thread curtains in the form of beads, decorative stones or other accessories; To give curtains an unusual shape, you can use tie-backs; An interesting solution are the models with eyelets. When using for sewing a light curtain of threads of different colors, you can quickly change the arrangement of the threads to transform the bored pattern; If desired, you can adjust the length by shortening the curtains with your hands. Due to the special weaving of the fibers, the threads do not unravel when cut, retaining their shape; Such a curtain can be used to visually divide the space when you need to distinguish between the living room and the kitchen or create a special atmosphere in the bedroom with the help of a thread canopy; Curtain rods for thread curtains have the usual design, as for the fastening uses a dense curtain tape.

Depending on the style of external execution, muslin curtains with their own hands may look as follows:

Spiral models

The threads are twisted in a special way, acquiring a characteristic spiral shape. This type of curtains requires particularly careful operation.

Rainbow solutions and muslin-rain

A light curtain, in which the colors of the threads smoothly flow into each other, like a rainbow, looks harmoniously in modern interiors and emphasizes the positive atmosphere in the nursery. You can choose a rainbow gauze as the central element of the room, which is dominated by restrained tones, complementing the furnishings with colored accessories to match the threads.

For rain models, thin stripes of lurex are woven into the threads, giving shine.

If do-it-yourself rope curtains are made of white, steel or gray threads, they will effectively decorate a high-tech room.

Kiseya Rain

Kiseya with textile decor

We are talking about weaving butterflies, flowers or other details that embody the animal or plant world, sewn from fabric or ribbons into threads. This technique is suitable for those who welcome the naturalness of Provence, country or modern decor that does not neglect different décor.

Thread made of glass beads, beads or beads

The models look unusual and exclusive in any interior. As a rule, they are used for zoning when a curtain of small width is needed. It is quite simple to make filament curtains with your own hands in this design: a dense thread, fishing line or wire is taken as the base, onto which decorative elements are strung in the selected order.

There is one important nuance regarding the use and care of muslin. To easily untangle the filament curtains after washing, they are pre-tied in several places and formed into a roll. Then, after a delicate machine wash, the curtain will quickly take on its original shape when hung, even if there is additional decor on the threads.

How to choose the right length?

To correctly determine the length of the filament curtain and the required number of threads, using a long ruler or tape measure, measure the width of the window opening and determine the height of the curtain from the floor to the cornice (if the cornice is fixed to the ceiling, the length is chosen according to the overall size of the room). Adjustments are made after hanging: for this, you just need to cut the curtains.

In order to correctly make muslin curtains, it is important not to be mistaken with the width. To determine the number of threads, a minimum of ten elements are placed on one centimeter. You can make curtains of thread from fabric strips, limited to five elements per centimeter of width.

Threads (especially natural ones) are pre-soaked before cutting, carrying out the so-called decotting to avoid shortening during operation. If this condition is met, the muslin will retain its size even after washing.

Fastening to the cornice

As already noted, any cornice is suitable for muslin. The individual threads are first fixed on the curtain tape, after which you can attach the thread curtains to the curtain rod itself.

To facilitate the process of fixing the ropes, they are not sewn each one individually, but double-sided tape is used, one side of which is attached to the curtain tape, and the other to the threads themselves. To cover the sticky part of the scotch tape, a non-woven fabric with an adhesive base is attached to it and the curtains itself, which is machine-stitched. After that, a decorative satin ribbon is sewn.

Another method is also used, in which filament curtains are attached not to adhesive tape, but to adhesive tape half of its height, after which the second half is closed, tightly clamping the muslin.

Then, for reliability, the tape is fastened with staples. The decoration is done using a satin ribbon, which is then attached to the curtain rod for curtains. The tape is sewn on, completely wrapping the place where the muslin is attached.

Main materials

To make rope curtains yourself, you will need:

A suitable thread option.

You can use a thread of the same texture, but different colors. Threads with a glossy surface look best. Viscose threads in the form of a thin cord and a silky texture are suitable.

Roughly, to make a thread curtain on a standard window, you will need about 10 skeins of 270 meters each. Tape measure for measuring threads along the length (the standard option is 2.5 meters). Adhesive tape, without which it is extremely difficult to make a muslin with your own hands. On the adhesive tape, it is possible to place the strings strictly at regular intervals, eliminating the unevenness of the rope curtain. This decor element is chosen directly under the product, guided by the color scheme of the threads. A needle and scissors and a stapler, which will be needed to fix the tape and sew the braid.

To make filament curtains with your own hands, the threads that have dried after soaking are first cut to the desired size and carefully folded, trying not to entangle.

If desired, some of the strings are decorated with decorative elements (the decor is also fixed after placing the curtains on the cornice, when each thread hangs down without getting confused with the rest). At the next stage, the threads are collected into a single structure according to the recommendations described above and the finished curtain is hung on the cornice. You can decorate the air curtain with homemade grabs to match the curtain, with the help of which the threads are gathered from the sides, forming a classic silhouette, or only the central elements are tied, leaving the side threads freely falling.

As you can see, independent production of cotton curtains is not difficult if you have the necessary materials at hand. The main thing is to think over the style of execution, choose the right thread colors, guided by the style of the interior, the color scheme of the room, the need to add bright accents. As a result, window decoration will become not only functional, but also a decorative element that pleases the eye.

Purpose of filament curtains

In addition to the fact that you can decorate a window in a kitchen, living room or bedroom with cotton curtains, you can use this product to give an interesting look to a doorway, an arch, or zoning a room. A filament curtain used as a canopy for a child's and adult's bed looks very nice.

At the same time, the work on the manufacture of this product for all types of applications will not differ in any way. Interior decoration can also be done using homemade yarn curtains, both on the window and on the door at the same time. This will make the environment even more harmonious.

DIY curtains made of threads are ideal for arranging a children's room.

Since the entire process will be carried out independently, if necessary, replace one or more elements, and in the children's room this may be required first of all, it will not be at all difficult to do this. If the repair of the curtain is included in subsequent plans, then it is necessary to take care of the availability of material for this in advance and save the additional threads that were used for the manufacture. In this case, the nursery will always look neat and original.

Material for making

Before you start making curtains from threads, you need to decide on the material. Despite the fact that natural threads are environmentally friendly and safe for the human body, it is best to choose polyester threads for making muslin. Such yarn is also absolutely harmless, but besides this, it is more convenient to work with it and take care of it in the future.

Polyester threads can be of any color, be decorated with lurex, which will provide an opportunity to create a curtain in exactly the form that will most of all decorate and complement the interior of the room. In addition, under the influence of ultraviolet light, such threads do not fade, which explains their long service life. Such a curtain does not electrify, and when wet, it will dry quickly.

Master class for making cotton curtains

The main stages that make up the master class on the manufacture of cotton curtains are:

installation of the cornice. If an ordinary wooden plank is used for these purposes, then before use it must be sanded with sandpaper, and then covered with transparent varnish or painted in the desired color.

After drying, the hinges must be screwed along the edges of the plank, 2 cm away from each edge.On the wall to which the cornice will be attached, precise markings are made for attaching the hinges; rings are strung on the wooden plank, which can be bought in a store or made by yourself from wire. The number of these elements is determined based on the required density of curtains and the thickness of the threads used; a thread is threaded through each ring and tied with a double knot; the cornice with threads is fixed on the wall.

In order to correctly determine the length of the threads in muslin, it is necessary to multiply the required size of the product by 2, and add 5-10 cm to the resulting value. This is necessary so that after fixing the threads on the cornice, as well as tying them with a knot to make it more beautiful appearance, the product has not become too short.

If the filament curtains are decorated with beads, then additional length must be left to secure them, since in order to fix the decorative element in a certain place, it is necessary to tie a knot under it. Beads can be arranged in a specific or completely random order, and their size is also unlimited. It should be borne in mind that if you do not use them, the threads, which have a very low weight, may not hang as they should.

Beads, in this case, will not only decorate the curtain, but also be a weighting agent that helps the threads to take a strictly vertical position. Do-it-yourself thread curtains made by this method imply the possibility of moving the canvas in any direction. If this is not required, then you can fix the threads on the cornice without using rings. To do this, each element is simply put on the rail with a loop, followed by tightening it. All other work is done in exactly the same order.

In the event that, after hanging on the cornice, as well as fastening with a knot, hairpin or grab in the required position, the thread curtain turned out to be slightly longer than required, then it can be cut with scissors.

To prevent the edges of the threads from unraveling, the end of each can be decorated with a small knot. If the muslin is made of threads of a dark color, then to prevent loosening, the ends of the threads can be processed using a fire source. In this case, the fibers of polyester threads will fuse together, which will prevent them from unraveling both during operation and when washing by hand or in an automatic washing machine.

Proper care of filament curtains

Unlike factory-made muslin, which involves attaching threads to a special tape, caring for a self-made curtain will take a certain amount of time. So in order to wash such a curtain, it is necessary to remove all the threads from the eaves, braid them and only then immerse them in the drum of the washing machine.

In the event that the threads were worn on the cornice without the use of rings, then after the end of the streak, you will have to practically re-sew the curtains, putting each thread on the bar. If the filament curtains were decorated with sequins, rhinestones or beads, then automatic washing will not work and the entire cleaning process will have to be done manually. Every woman tries to decorate her home and bring comfort to it.

Unusual solutions and interesting ideas look especially original. Recently, there has been a noticeable return to such a decorative and practical element as filament curtains. filament curtains

Process description

First of all, you need to think over the design, decide what kind of thread curtains you would like to see in your home.

It should be noted that they can be made of different materials, have different thickness, structure and texture. The shape of the curtains also depends on whether they will serve as a partition or simply become a decoration. To add originality to the room, you can create a pattern on the curtains.

To get started and create do-it-yourself filament curtains, you need to prepare:

the cornice on which they will hang; tapes, which are used for fastening; various threads for the product; decorative elements: beads, sequins or rhinestones.

How long should it be?

You also need to take into account the type of threads and the distance where you plan to place them. The density of the curtains will depend on these indicators. Filament curtains of different densities can be seen in the photo.

If preference is given to thin threads, then the distance between them should be about 2-5 mm. The number of skeins should be taken in centimeters, and it is calculated as follows: the length of the cornice must be divided by the distance between the threads. This will allow you to determine the number of threads that you need to take to create curtains with your own hands along the entire length of the cornice.

The resulting number should be multiplied by the distance from the floor to the ceiling. Then the centimeters should be converted to meters, and from here the required number of skeins should be determined. In the event that the threads are longer than necessary, it's not scary. It is enough to carefully trim them, and then secure them from below.

Fastening

Most of the master classes on the manufacture of thread curtains assume that they will be fixed on a reinforcing tape. To do this, the threads must be cut, leaving the required length, and then attached to the base. They are intertwined using loops in two rows.

You can also choose the second production option.

The threads are attached to special rings, which are then put on the cornice. The curtain will look like in the photo. Sometimes filament curtains are attached to a prepared strip of wood, on which holes are made. Threads are threaded through them and fixed, as in the photo.

Main materials

Curtain yarns can be made from a variety of yarns, ranging from regular yarns to shiny and smooth fabrics that shimmer and flow perfectly. You can decorate the curtains with any decorative elements, it all depends on imagination and personal preferences. It can be not only beads and sequins, but also bells and other jewelry.

For each bead, a suitable needle is selected, with which it is strung. It is better to hang about 10 jewelry on one thread - then the finished product will not be overloaded with unnecessary details. The thicker the thread product is woven, the more reliably you need to hook the decor.

Necessary calculations

When making the basis of thread curtains with your own hands, it is necessary to take into account the width of the doorway or other opening where the curtains will be located. If it is assumed that it will be necessary to move the curtains, then it is necessary to leave space between the threads. With frequent sliding and sliding, it is more expedient to fix them on a wooden plank - this will be more practical and reliable.

An important point is the number of woven threads that make up the base of the curtains. The standard size requires about 15 pieces of thread, but the exact amount is considered based on the width of the opening and personal preference.

The length should not necessarily be up to the floor, you can make curtains not for the full length - this will create the illusion of spaciousness. The edges of the curtain can be made in various shapes: semicircle, waves or classic straight lines. A more detailed master class can be viewed in the video.

Caring for filament curtains does not cause any particular difficulties. They are easily washed in warm water and soap.

They are absolutely not like traditional curtains, they are much lighter and weightless, and they look original, attracting attention to themselves. A feature of the long muslin, in contrast to the unhindered passage of warm air from the battery, therefore, in winter, you can leave the curtains in a free position.

Main materials

To make rope curtains yourself, you will need:

As you can see, independent production of cotton curtains is not difficult if you have the necessary materials at hand. The main thing is to think over the style of execution, choose the right thread colors, guided by the style of the interior, the color scheme of the room, the need to add bright accents. As a result, window decoration will become not only functional, but also a decorative element that pleases the eye.

These are wonderful and fashionable cotton gauze curtains (which means rain), you can buy now in the appropriate stores:

They fit perfectly into the bedroom, kitchen, living room or nursery. However, they are not so cheap - from 1.500 to 5000 rubles.

But if you show your imagination, then you can make them with your own hands in any size and color that suits you.

Somehow by chance, on the Internet, I came across a forum in BABYBLOG, where they discussed sewing just such a curtain with my own hands. One of the users of the site, whose name is Anastasia, revealed an interesting secret of how and from what she made such beauty for herself.

Here, look, she got beauty:

For now, I don't need to make it in order to make a special master class, so I will describe this process from the words of this very needlewoman.

Anastasia made this curtain from threads of different colors. She left a little less than 10 skeins, each of which was 270 m. She cost 720 rubles to sew the threads together with the accompanying materials for sewing this curtain. So, she took strings of 100% viscose "Pearl" from YarnArt. Here are how they are, like lace and silky:

Finding a site on the Internet where you can purchase such threads, I think, will not be difficult for you.

One roll of -270 m costs 100 rubles.

First, you need to calculate the footage required to make the curtain. Anastasia found out that 1 cm of the curtain had 4 threads 2.50 meters long. The width of the finished product is 3 meters. That is, in 3 meters there is 1200 strings of 2.5 m each, for a total of only 3000 meters of strings - it seems that a terrible figure. (But if one skein is 270 meters, then it was necessary to buy 11 skeins of thread. However, she writes that less than 10 skeins were left).

Then cut these threads to a length of 2.5 meters (the needlewoman did not cut everything at once, but half, then cut it as needed).

Moreover, she came up with a way to fix all these threads on the curtain tape, so as not to sew them one by one: I pasted double-sided tape on one side of the curtain tape, and glued the threads to the other. To fix them well and cover the sticky part of the tape, I glued a strip of adhesive interfacing to the tape and threads, then fixed it all with a machine line. And on the curtain tape itself, on the front side, I scribbled a satin ribbon (I think it is possible to make a belt for this curtain and from any suitable fabric). In my opinion, it is not difficult. The main thing is to look so as not to crumple the curtain tape, otherwise the tape can stick together.

However, she had to tinker for 2 days, but what a hand-made beauty it turned out. The result is pleasing to the eye! By the way, Anastasia did not process the bottom of the threads, but simply cut it off and that's it, I still would have tied the knots. But he says that they don’t get disheveled anyway. I wanted to burn it, but the thread shattered into dust - it’s natural.

I believe that you can hang a bead on the end of each thread, and tie the end into a knot so that the bead is held. Or you can add beads somewhere in the middle of the curtain. It will be cool with beads!

Moreover, this site has an article describing the process of making curtains from beads. True, Anastasia did not take into account the fact that the threads are natural, shrink, so in the curtain she was making, some of the threads jumped up. Against the general background, this is not yet noticeable, but after washing the product may still be shortened.

Therefore, take this point into account and before cutting the threads, you need to wet them and let them dry so that they shrink. Moreover, we do the same with natural fabrics before we open them. Otherwise it is called DECORATION.
