We are doing repairs in the bathroom. There was a dispute: should the tiles be laid on the floor or on the walls first? How many tilers - so many opinions I tried it myself in different ways, I chose for myself - first the floor, so that then the walls were to be supported on a horizontal surface. In addition, floor tiles are cut much worse than wall tiles - you can't get to finished walls ... That's right and so, but it is better to start with the walls, then if the floor is not ideal, the lower tiles can be cut so that the seam is the same along the entire perimeter.

What comes first, a bathtub or a tile on the wall

The question of the choice of the primary covering of the floor and walls with ceramic tiles has been observed for quite a long time.

The age-old question

The question of the choice of the primary covering of the floor and walls with ceramic tiles has been observed for quite a long time. Some masters argue that tiling should start from the walls, while others prove the need for the primary finish of the floor. Both the first and the second are right in some way, but at the same time, both are wrong in some points. Let's take a closer look at each opinion and draw a conclusion about the primary finish of the bathroom. Pay attention to where to start repairs in the apartment, tell experts from the site http://remoskop.ru/.

Walls first

Many builders are greatly supported by the opinion that it is the walls that need to be clad first. Before this, the wall must be leveled, preferably also in level. If there are irregularities when laying the tiles, they will "come out" and subsequently will be visible. After leveling, you can start laying. Here, too, opinions are divided - some say that the tiles must be started from the very bottom, leaving a small gap for the floor tiles. Others advise laying from the second row (starting from the floor). Still others are in favor of starting the tiles from the very center of the wall. Another part of the craftsmen starts laying from a bar or profile, which is fixed at the bottom of the wall along the level and from it they go higher to the ceiling. However, this option makes it necessary to install a skirting board, and this is an additional cost.

In support of this option to start laying tiles in the bathroom, its adherents point out the fact that during the laying of tiles, you can either stain the floor tiles with glue or cement mortar, or as a result of activity, some tool or the tile itself may fall on the floor, which will cause damage to ceramics. Another plus of starting from the walls is that after laying the tiles, you need to "rest", that is, you should not press on it and apply another mechanical effect. It follows that after laying the tiles on the walls, you can immediately start laying on the floor.

Floor first

The second part of the craftsmen and folk craftsmen assures us that it is advisable to lay tiles, it is advisable to start from the floor. Before this, the floor is leveled, after which the master proceeds to the installation itself. In defense of this method, its supporters point out that it is much easier to start laying the walls from the floor than from some other point on the wall. If the floor is level (and this is necessary), you only need to leave a gap of 3-5 mm from the floor and then start laying tiles on the walls. The gap can be made with the same crosses that you will have between the tiles. By setting the same gap between them, you will get perfectly straight lines. And to the fact that the floor can be smeared with glue or something else, supporters of the primacy of the floor suggest simply covering it with newspapers, and if you are afraid of heavy objects falling on the floor, cover it with cardboard, and then nothing will be scary for your floor.

However, this method of styling has a significant disadvantage. After the tiles have been laid, they need a so-called "rest" time, during which they must not be stepped on. And this time is significant - several days, if the glue layer is thick (in the case of an uneven floor) - up to a week. That is, a whole week of your time will be wasted.

What to do first: install the bathroom or lay the tiles on the wall

But if you are in no hurry, this will not be a big problem for you.

And still …

What should come first in the end - the walls or the floor. As it turned out above, you can start laying tiles both from the floor and from the walls. Each order has its pros and cons. It should be noted that not all craftsmen adhere to a particular tiling system - in one room they start laying from the floor, in another - from the walls. It all depends on the specific situation. In any case, convenience at work should be the determining factor of primacy. If it is convenient for you to start laying from the floor, then start from the floor, otherwise from the walls. But do not be afraid to experiment - perhaps having tried another technology, you will find that it is more convenient and simpler.

Output

Each master or folk craftsman is looking for something of his own - something that is convenient for him and seems more correct. It is impossible to find a concrete answer to the question of primacy, everyone sets it for himself, guided by the information received and his own experience. You can argue over this issue for a long time, claiming the correctness of the first method and the fallacy of the second (or vice versa), but the choice always remains before a single master who starts laying ceramic tiles in the bathroom.

Where do ceramic tiles first go - on the walls or on the floor? Expose the guides around the perimeter of the bath to the height of one tile and drive out the walls. then the floor. and then the last row of wall tiles On the walls, so as not to shit and break the tiles on the floor!

Which comes first: a tile or a bathtub? Determine the sequence

But there are also skilled workers who start off the floor, but it is problematic that you have to cover the floors so as not to guess! On the floor, If you are not going to make the flooring plinth, then first the walls, without reporting the lowest row of tiles. The walls begin to lay down from 2-3 rows, and then the floors, and last of all the bottom row on the wall

Artem Spekhin
We make repairs in the bathroom on our own. How should the tiles be laid: first on the floor, then on the walls, or vice versa? It was done by a professional. He first leveled the floor, then laid the tiles on it. And then on the walls. Of course, on the walls, first of all, and then on the floor. First, the floor is made, then the walls

Sergey Basargin
After laying the first (the horizon of the row of tiles on the walls of the bathroom goes the second, etc., or the entire wall up to the top; Lay the rows as you like. I first lay the floor, then the walls up to 2m, two walls each. Then the top from the goat. Installation of the tiles begins from 2 rows from the floor, from the center of the wall, from the ceiling is marked with a whole tile in the floor trimming after laying the floor tiles. The floor is also trimmed from the center to the wall. Classic version.

Today the main work is a box.

I would like to say that for me personally, the sequence of laying is important here. So that the seams that are - you need them to come together, so that they come together. I adjust the seam horizontally so that it goes from start to finish.

Well, there is such a moment, before I somehow did not pay special attention to it. At first, it is still better to lay two tiles on the left side. That is, this one and this one.

But before laying, adjust this tile. It is slightly sawn and wound under the already laid tiles.

That is, first you need to mark how it will lie and then put them together. If you lay the tiles separately, then adjusting them will be too problematic.

Therefore, I initially mark these tiles and lay them together to bring out this seam. After all, you can even look here so that it is clear what I am talking about. That is, attach a corner. It can be seen that he jumps a little. If we put these two tiles together at the corner first. That is, this large and this small piece and then we will try to cover it with a lid. Due to the flaws in the tile itself, this seam can be scattered here.

To avoid this, we will try to lay the big side first, and here these flaws are already compensated.

Well, when these two tiles were already laid, then I laid these sides. Well, and then I have already fully extended this whole row.

I will not lay out in parts. I'll stretch this row first. It will be much smoother. Then it will be much easier to adjust this side here. So I'll turn on the laser. Well, let's say, arbitrarily, I put it on the edge and already along the edge, that is, these tiles I initially cut off with a little extra.

I took this size, cut off a little with a margin, and then sawed through them. I twist and cut straight. Here they are all ready. That is, they have all been sawn through.

Well, and then I made a burr and now I will drive this row completely so that it can be pressed down with the rule. That is, fully expose, as you need to and only then just lay down the side part.

How to cut tiles correctly

As for the burr, what other point I wanted to draw attention to. Here, let's take this tile.

That is, it is clear that the tiles are not cut until the glaze itself. Just the rest is then passed through with sandpaper. And then there is such a moment that you need to pass the sandpaper in one direction. In no case should you make movements back and forth. Otherwise, with a crumb that is thrown off the sandpaper, you can simply hook the glaze with it.

Well, before working in general on burr, I still do such a test. I have a piece of tile. That is, I make a trial wash of any ordinary tile, because they are still different from each other, and the strength of the glaze is different from each other. I make a trial wash down on my Zasuitskaya tiles on both sides. That is, on the one hand, if you take any tile and look. For example, here the glaze and ceramics are joined right here at the very junction. And on the back of the tile, the glaze goes inward.

And so, in general, in most tiles. Therefore, on the one hand, we have a little more, on the other, a little less. And I will make this test drink so that I drive it more, more and more and determine at what point the glaze already starts to tear. In order to somehow make myself such a restriction in the future. What can not be cut further, then you need to work manually.

Well, and then, as I said, I will already work initially with ventilation. Here you need to make ventilation, so that the "ceiling" came and pulled the ceiling, installed lamps. Well, and then there will be work on the floor. That's all for now.

When planning a bathroom renovation, you need to decide on the sequence of work. What comes first: laying the tiles or installing the bathtub? What is the most correct and rational algorithm? The answer to this question depends on several factors. The size of the room, the material of the bath, and the skill level of those who will carry out the finishing and plumbing work are also important. There are some other nuances as well.

Sequence options

Option 1: first the tiles, then the bath

The bath is brought into the lined bathroom. It only remains to install it. To fill the gap between the bathroom and the wall, a sealant is most often used. It protects against water ingress and holds the bowl.

If the bathroom is large and the bathtub is on legs, you don't need to put it against the wall at all.

Option 2: bath first, then tiles

The bath is brought in before the start of the wall decoration. Installed, fixed. Only after this does the laying of the tiles begin.

In fact, the bath is lined with ceramics or, in other words, built in. The tile goes onto the side of the bath, but does not rest against it, but "hangs" with a gap of several millimeters. The gap is subsequently filled with a sealant and / or moisture resistant (preferably epoxy). Further, the joint can be decorated with a special ceramic border or plastic corner.

Option 3: first measure on the bath, then laying the tiles

The bathtub is brought into the unfinished room and installed. Measurements are taken, markings are made for the tiles. Then the bath is taken out or pulled back. The tiles are not laid from the floor, but from the level of the bath rim, taking into account the required gap. When the finish is finished, the bathtub is placed under the already laid tiles.

Mistakes are unacceptable here: a little overshot with measurements - and the bath may not enter.

How to choose the right option?

Depending on the size of the room

If the bathtub fits exactly from wall to wall, it is risky to choose the first option. It may happen that after leveling the walls and laying the tiles, the distance will be reduced, and the bath simply will not fit. Therefore, if the bathroom is very small, you first need to install a bathtub and lay the tiles from it. It's safer this way.

If the bathroom, on the contrary, is large, you can choose the third option: bring in, install, measure, make markings, move and lay out the tiles not from the floor, but from the level of the bath rim.

Depending on the type of bath

You should read the instructions for the new bath. As a rule, manufacturers of acrylic bathtubs recommend first laying the tiles and only then installing the bathtub, sealing the joint with the wall with a sealant.

Manufacturers of steel bathtubs are not so categorical, however, they do not advise to rest the edge of the tile directly against the side. The steel bathtub is capable of "walking". As a consequence, the row of tiles lying on the side can be squeezed out. It is possible to tile the steel bathtub, but a gap must be left.

A cast-iron bath is most often “built in” into a tile, and not attached to an already tiled wall. Such baths are the most reliable, heavy and stable. And they serve, as a rule, for a very long time. Therefore, their integration does not entail any special risks.

There is another important aspect associated with a cast iron bath. If you cover the bathroom with tiles and only then bring in the bath, the finish may suffer. Cast iron is hard and heavy, so even a not very strong blow to the tile can lead to chips and cracks.

Unlike cast iron, an acrylic bathtub, especially an inexpensive one, may require replacement in just a few years. If it is built into a tile, you will have to break the structure. Before deciding on a sequence option, you need to decide - are you ready for an unplanned repair? If the bathtub is installed in a tiled bathroom, and the joint with the wall is filled only with sealant, there will be no particular difficulties with its replacement.

The size of the bathtub also matters. If it is very large (for example, corner models differ in such dimensions), tiling it will be, to put it mildly, inconvenient. How will this affect the quality of the styling? Will the new bathtub be damaged during the finishing work? Maybe such a bathtub should be installed only in a tiled bathroom?

Here, of course, a lot depends on the skill and experience of the tiler. If he is ready to work in such conditions and at the same time guarantees that the bath will do without damage, you can give preference to the version with "built-in".

If the bathtub is equipped with additional functions (hydromassage), it is fraught with "stitching" it into a tile. Should any breakdown happen, you will either have to put up with it, or destroy the structure.

  • acrylic baths, especially inexpensive
  • atypically large baths
  • bathtubs with additional functions
  • heavy cast iron baths

An exception is, of course, freestanding cast-iron bathtubs, including those on feet. They are never built in and are often not joined to the wall at all.

Depending on the budget

Laying tiles only from the side of the bathtub saves material costs. After all, the walls under the bathroom are not revetted.

If the renovation is being done in an apartment that will be rented out, it is still advisable to bring the bath into the already tiled bathroom. Here it is better to save money on the bath itself. Fortunately, changing it, with this installation option, will not be difficult.

Depending on whether the bathroom is being used during the renovation

If the owners live in an apartment where renovations are taking place, they want to shorten the period during which the bathrooms are not functioning as much as possible. In this situation, it will be convenient to bring and install the bathtub in a prepared, but not yet tiled bathroom, and then tile it. While the renovation is in progress, the bathroom can be used.

Depending on the opinion of the masters

If the conditions allow you to choose any of the options, you can trust the repairmen. Experts with extensive experience will determine the optimal sequence themselves and talk about all the possible pros and cons.

1. If there is a whole tile from the side of the bath, and not a scanty cut, the picture turns out to be more attractive. When planning to bring the bath into the lined bathroom, it is advisable to approximately determine, before laying the tiles, at what height the side will be.

2. Before coating the “seam” between the wall and the bathroom with silicone sealant, it is recommended to fill the bowl with water until it is drained. Drain the water only after the sealant has dried. It is argued that if an empty bathtub is “sealed”, after filling it can come off the wall. To protect the bathtub and walls from traces of sealant, it is necessary to stick mounting tape on them before work.

3. If you want to "drown" the bath in a long-laid tile, you can make a shallow slab in the tile. The width of the groove is the size of the side of the bath. The bath is pushed into the pipe, the joint is treated with a sealant and / or moisture-resistant grout.

The problem of a large gap between the bathroom and the wall is very common in new buildings. It is not at all clear what the developer is guided by, because the length of the bath has long been defined by clear standards and is 150, 160, 170 centimeters. Nevertheless, the space for the bath is often 5-7 centimeters wider than this standard.

Solution options

There are several solutions to this issue:

You can build up a wall at the junction of the bathtub and tile it, like the rest of the walls. It looks in my opinion "clumsy" and not aesthetically pleasing.

You can take a bathtub 10 centimeters longer (the next standard size) and "bump" into the walls with the edges of the product. A sufficiently high-quality solution, however, the thickness of the tiling should be taken into account so that the tiles fit aesthetically on the board and do not go too far. Mainly only applicable with wide, flat sides near the bathtub, or when the edges cut into the walls quite a bit.

A better solution would be to erect a plasterboard (or gypsum fiber) box in the width of the bath, from floor to ceiling. This option is good because you can close significant gaps between the wall and the bathroom. In addition, often the walls are far from 90 degrees to each other - the box from floor to ceiling allows you to hide the geometry defects of the room. Thanks to the box, the "wedge" on the tile will not be visible anywhere.

You can build up the missing centimeters with plasterboard along the entire wall. If this is done along the wall where communications are planned, then the problem with the hidden placement of pipes will be solved. The most correct, in my opinion, solution: 5-7 cm of space does not solve anything in terms of the total area, but there is an opportunity to get rid of boxes for pipes. After all, there is often no way to chisel the walls under the sewer pipes in order to hide them.

It is the option with the hiding of communications that we will consider in more detail.

Relevant or not?

To determine the relevance of plasterboard (gypsum fiber) cladding to eliminate an unpleasant gap, first of all, you need to try to mark the cladding. This will make it possible to judge the appropriateness in general, how much space the cladding will "steal" and whether it is possible to hide all communications.

During the marking, you need to painstakingly take into account all the little things: how the frame will stand (does it interfere with the pipes), the thickness of the glue and tiles. In the end, you need to decide whether the bathtub will get up before or after tiling. In general, most of the craftsmen adhere to the first option (first the bath is installed, then the tiles are laid), including me. In general, everything needs to be carefully measured and taken into account.

It is worth noting that it will not be possible to completely eliminate the boxes: at least, you will have to make a box where 110 mm goes. sewer pipe to the toilet. If the sewer riser is located outside the bathroom, then the box can be located only in the lower corner, of course, if the toilet is planned there and whether it is planned at all. If the riser is 110 mm. the pipe is located in the bathroom itself, then the vertical box cannot be avoided.

Thanks to the false wall and the fact that the sewer riser is outside the bathroom, we managed to get rid of the boxes. The only box had to be erected under the toilet, at the entry point 110 mm. sewer pipe. Sewer pipes of 50 mm are hidden behind the plasterboard cladding. and water pipes. And most importantly, the cladding is made in such a way that the bathtub fits perfectly without gaps. Please note: the bathtub was installed after the tiles were laid - this was the request of the customer. In general, it is more practical to lay the tile next to an already installed bath.

After the arguments about boxes, any reader will say: if boxes cannot be completely abandoned, then what is the point of revealing the entire wall at all, is it really just for the sake of a clear fit of the bathroom? Not only ... Horizontal water pipes, sewer pipes 50 mm. will be hidden behind a false wall. Without a false wall, you will have to make a horizontal box along the entire length of the pipes, and the box will prevent the installation of furniture, for example, a cabinet with a washbasin. And in the end, extra boxes are extra corners, and corners spoil the design of any room, even if they are perfect.

Communications

As described above, all the pipes are hidden behind the cladding, and only water sockets stick out for the necessary plumbing fixtures. There is plenty of space for the distribution of water supply, but for a sewer pipe of 50 mm. have to make room. Where, according to the idea, a profile for drywall should pass and the profile interferes with the sewer pipe - the profile can be cut. That is, the pipe can run close to the drywall. In more severe cases, when there is not enough space, you can trim the drywall itself where it interferes with the pipe. Ultimately, the main thing is that the pipes do not interfere with the laying of the tiles.

Subsequently, when the wall is sewn up, it is important not to forget the places where the pipes are too close to the cladding and not accidentally pierce them with self-tapping screws. I strongly recommend marking the places where such problems are possible.

False wall close to the bathtub

When facing with drywall, questions may arise: is one layer of drywall enough? How often should a profile be set? My answers are simple: one layer of drywall 12.5 mm. quite enough - tiling will significantly strengthen the structure, in addition, mortgages are made for heavy objects (see below). As for the distance between the profiles, 60 cm is more than enough.

Also, the question may arise: is it necessary to fill the empty space under the cladding with insulation? Here you need to weigh the relevance - if sound insulation from neighbors is needed, then the insulation will give only a small effect. It should be understood that it is worth insulating with foam or extruded polystyrene foam, mineral wool does not tolerate high humidity well.

For the canopy of the water heater and heavy furniture (if any), plywood mortgages should be provided. For a storage water heater of 50-100 liters, at least two layers of 18 mm plywood are needed. For a cabinet with a mirror, one layer of 10 mm is enough. for eyes.

Plywood inserts are attached to the frame of the false wall. When screwing the sheets of gypsum board, thin zigzags of polyurethane foam should be applied to the mortgages and, having attached the sheet, screw it not too often.

We examined the main points of design and installation of a false wall made of gypsum plasterboard to eliminate the gap to the bath and hidden laying of communications. In general, the topic can be painted over several pages, because it includes piping, frame installation, and so on, deserving detailed attention. In subsequent publications, we will fill this gap.
